The theory of sex allocation suggests that if the reproductive value and the cost of producing/rearing offspring differ between
male and female offspring, parents should invest differently in sexes depending on environmental conditions. Female parents
could allocate more resources to eggs of one sex to compensate potential sex-dependent constraints later during the nestling
period. In this study, we tested the influence of environmental conditions on sexual dimorphism in eggs of Eurasian kestrels
(Falco tinnunculus) by experimentally manipulating food availability before laying. We found that an increase in food abundance before laying
did not increase egg mass but changed sex-dependent resource distribution in eggs. In food-supplemented pairs, but not in
control pairs, egg mass and hatchling mass were similar between males and females. In addition, we found, in the food-supplemented
group, that the latest hatched females showed shorter hatching times than in the control group. In control pairs, female eggs,
hatchlings and nestlings were heavier than males. In addition, male fledglings in the food-supplemented group gained less
mass than those in the control group. As that food abundance was only increased until the onset of laying, female kestrels
were expected to invest in eggs taking food abundance before egg formation as a predictor of future conditions during brood
rearing. Our study shows that environmental conditions before laying promote a subtle adjustment of the resources invested
in both sexes of offspring rather than in other breeding parameters. This adjustment resulted in a shortening of hatching
time of the last hatched females that possibly gives them advantages in their competitive capacity with respect to male nest-mates. 相似文献

Defensive and parental care behaviour of convict cichlids that differed in past effort was compared. Before testing, some fish were bred three times while others were not bred. Age was held constant; all individuals in this study were approximately 20 months old (±2 months) at test time. Furthermore, half of the pairs in this study had their broods experimentally reduced by 50%. Results indicated that past effort across breeding attempts affects investment in the current brood. Experienced pairs were more aggressive toward a model predator than inexperienced parents. However, no major differences were observed in depreciable care (i.e. fanning). Contrary to previous studies, brood size had minor effects on parental care. This discrepancy could be due to the age of the parents; individuals in this study were significantly older than fish tested in previous studies. The results support parental investment theory and suggest that past effort is not only important within breeding episodes but also within an animal's lifetime. 相似文献

Contrary to vertebrates, sperm production in insects may bear considerable costs for males. This is especially true in species
that donate spermatophores containing sperm and nutrient-rich accessory gland products like in butterflies. Hence, spermatophores
at first and subsequent copulations can differ in a quantitative and qualitative way. Such effects have particularly been
shown in polyandrous species providing large spermatophores. Here we experimentally tested the effect of male mating status
(virgin male vs recently mated male) on copulation duration, spermatophore size and females’ fitness components in a monandrous
butterfly Pararge aegeria that typically donates small spermatophores. Copulations with non-virgin males lasted on average five times longer than that
with virgin males and resulted in a spermatophore which was on average three times smaller. Number of eggs laid and female
life span were not affected by the mating status treatment, but there was a significant effect on the number of living caterpillars
a female produced, as copulations with virgin males resulted in higher numbers of larval offspring. Interestingly, the difference
in spermatophore mass at the first and the second copulation increased with male body size. This suggests differential spermatophore
allocation decisions among males of different size. Consequences for females and potential mechanisms influencing female fitness
components are discussed. Given the small absolute size of spermatophores in P. aegeria, components other than consumable nutrients (perhaps hormones) should cause the observed effects. 相似文献

Testosterone-induced depression of male parental behavior in the barn swallow: female compensation and effects on seasonal fitness 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
In birds, many aspects of male socio-sexual and parental behavior are influenced by androgens, most notably testosterone (T). We report the effects of subcutaneous T-implants in male barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) on male and female parental behavior and on seasonal reproductive success. Males were assigned to one of three experimental groups: (i) implanted with a T-filled Silastic tube; (ii) implanted with an empty Silastic tube; and (iii) not implanted. T-implanted males provided a smaller proportion of feedings (number of feedings by the male/total number of feedings by both parents) and fed nestlings less frequently (number of feedings/h) than males of the other two groups. Females paired to T-implanted males fed nestlings significantly more often than females paired with unimplanted males. Females almost fully compensated for their mates' shortfall, and this resulted in similar combined feeding efforts among treatments. Reproductive success in their first broods or during the entire breeding season was unaffected by T- treatment. These results confirm earlier reports of the suppressive effects of T on male parental behavior. However, they are inconsistent with current ESS models that predict partial compensation as the optimal response by one individual to reduction of parental effort by its mate in monogamous, biparental systems. 相似文献

An experiment was designed to examine in a long-lived seabird, the thin-billed prion (Pachyptila belcheri), how adults adjust their food provisioning strategy when their foraging abilities are reduced and when the chick's needs are increased. To reduce the foraging abilities of adults we impaired their flying ability by removing some flight feathers (handicapped), and to increase the food needs of the chick one parent was retained (single). Birds made either short foraging trips lasting 1–3 days, or long trips lasting 5–9 days. Control birds alternated long and short trips whereas single birds or handicapped birds made several successive short trips and thereafter a long trip. In each treatment, food loads tended to be heavier after long trips than after short trips, and single birds tended to bring heavier loads than control or handicapped birds. Birds in the three treatments lost similar amounts of mass after short trips and gained similar amounts of mass after long trips. However, the mass of handicapped birds declined through the experiment, while that of control and single birds remained stable. Although the proportion of chicks that died during the experiment was similar among the three treatments, the chicks fledged by a single bird were lighter than those in control nests. The results of the experiment suggest that thin-billed prions adjust their breeding effort differently to decreased flying ability or increased food demand by the chick. Single birds increase foraging effort without allowing their condition to deteriorate. Conversely, handicapped birds are unable to maintain their body condition while sustaining the chick at the same rate as control birds. It is suggested that in this long-lived seabird, adults probably adjust their breeding effort so that they do not incur the risk of an increased mortality, this risk being monitored by the body condition. 相似文献

Summary The fitness of a parent in an altricial bird species is likely to be a function of the proportion of resources allocated to offspring production in relation to the amount spent on its own survival. Here we report an experiment on the Antarctic petrel in which we manipulated the costs of rearing an offspring by placing small lead loads on the legs of one parent. The bird could then either decrease its own body reserves or reduce the food load to the chick. The manipulated birds decreased their food load and increased the feeding interval, compared with unmanipulated birds. Consequently, the rate of chick loss increased. Allocation of parental investment is predicted to be equal at the population level between both sexes of offspring, and should lead to sex ratio biases in species that exhibit a sex-difference in parental care. Sex-differences in parental care are rarely quantified. We measured daily energy expenditure in free-living nestlings of the extremely sexually size dimorphic European sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus), using the doubly labelled water method. These data were combined with measured growth characteristics to estimate daily and total metabolised energy intake of male and female young during the nestling stage. Females reached an asymptotic body mass 1.6 times higher than males. This resulted in a total metabolised energy an estimated 1.4 times higher for the nestling stage. Furthermore, we observed a decline in daily metabolised energy with an increase in brood size, which was significantly stronger for females than for males. These results are discussed in the context of Fishers equal allocation theory. Empirical evidence of a sex ratio bias at the end of parental care, with an overall excess of males, is lacking in this species. Consequently, our data do not support the idea of equal allocation between the sexes. The observed sex difference in daily metabolised energy in response to brood size may give scope for sex ratio bias at the level of the individual brood. 相似文献

The reproductive trade-off hypothesis predicts that the investment made in current reproduction determines the breeders’ future fitness as a consequence of intra-or inter-generational reproductive costs. Long-lived species are expected to favour their own reproductive value at the expense of their offspring, hence incurring in inter-generational costs, whereas short-lived species are expected to invest in the current breeding attempt even at the expense of their own survival, thus incurring in intra-generational costs. We tested whether intensity of current reproductive effort has intra-or inter-generational costs in a short-lived bird, the blue tit Parus caeruleus, with a brood size manipulation experiment. We expected more intra-generational (parental reproduction and/or survival) than inter-generational (offspring quality and survival) reproductive costs. We found that parental effort, measured as the hourly rate of parental visits to nests, increased gradually with experimental manipulation. Brood size manipulation resulted in a gradual increase in the number of fledglings per nest from reduced to increased treatments. We found an effect of the manipulation on the probability of making a second clutch, with adults rearing enlarged broods being less likely to undertake such a second reproduction during the season compared to those rearing control or decreased broods. We found no evidence of other reproductive costs; neither as adult weight after manipulation, apparent parental local survival, apparent offspring local survival or local recruitment. In the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, large fluctuations of prey abundance alters the frequency at which spotted hyena
(Crocuta crocuta) cubs are nursed and thus the total level of maternal input available to them. Maternal input is high when mothers feed on
high densities of locally available migratory herbivores and low when mothers travel up to 70 km to forage. Using data from
19 cub cohorts on the incidence of siblicide (from monitoring the survival of 609 cubs in twin litters) and cub growth rates
(from 195 cubs in twin litters) as a measure of maternal input, we demonstrate that the incidence of siblicide increased as
average cohort growth rate declined. In total, there were 37 siblicides in 384 litters (9% of litters). When both cubs were
alive, total maternal input in siblicidal litters was significantly lower than in non-siblicidal litters and the mean share
of the dominant sib of 64.6% was significantly higher than the mean of 52.1% for dominant sibs of non-siblicidal litters.
After siblicide, growth rates of siblicide victors substantially increased, demonstrating that mothers did not reduce maternal
input after litter reduction. As a result, siblicide victors achieved a long-term growth rate similar to that of singletons
and thus significantly increased their expected survival. We conclude that in spotted hyenas, high maternal input in lactation
has favoured the evolution of facultative siblicide in populations inhabiting areas with low or fluctuating food resources. 相似文献

Female birds deposit in the yolks of eggs substantial amounts of androgens, such as testosterone and androstenedione. These
androgens have been shown to speed up nestling development, induce a fast development of ornaments and increase dominance
in adults. Experiments in several species have reported that females invest greater amounts of androgens in the eggs fathered
by attractive males, suggesting that yolk androgen is a costly investment for either the offspring or the mother. There is
some evidence that nestling immunocompetence may be partially suppressed by high levels of yolk androgens, but it is not known
whether this is also the case for females. We tested this hypothesis in the house martin by inducing an immune challenge through
an injection of sheep red blood cells, a standard challenge of the humoral immune system. Experimental birds laid eggs with
lower amounts of yolk androstenedione than controls, and there was a similar non-significant trend for testosterone. Furthermore,
the probability of laying a replacement clutch was higher for birds that had laid a first clutch with relatively high levels
of yolk testosterone. These results suggest that yolk androgen deposition is limited by immune costs in the female, and that
only females in good condition may afford to invest high levels of androgen in eggs in this species. 相似文献

Reproductive effort is a key parameter of life history because it measures the resources allocated to reproduction at the
expense of growth and maintenance. Male reproductive effort always had a minor role with respect to female effort both in
the development of theories and in field research. Elephant seals are an ideal subject for reproductive effort studies because
they fast during the breeding season, splitting the phase of energy acquisition from the phase of energy use for breeding.
In this paper, we present results on male reproductive effort (weight loss estimated by photogrammetry) in southern elephant
seals (Mirounga leonina), the most dimorphic and polygynous of all mammal species. We show that total reproductive effort increases with age, with
no sign of late decrease or senescence. Male reproductive effort in this species depends mostly on behavioral factors, i.e.,
the success in competition with other males, and the intensity of interaction with females. A large effort results in large
gains in both mating success and fertilizations. The large reproductive success that a few males are able to achieve come
at a big cost in terms of energy expenditure, but this cost does not seem to affect the likelihood of survival to the following

Summary. Many studies investigating effects of plant chemicals on herbivore performance have reported contradictory results, perhaps
because of possible interaction between different chemicals. Also, a herbivore’s performance is not necessarily consistent
with its food or oviposition preference. Our aim was to investigate simultaneously antibiosis (larval growth and survival)
and antixenosis (oviposition and feeding preferences) responses in herbivore to three plant chemicals, of which one is expected
to have positive and two are expected to have negative effects. Antibiosis was measured by correlating the nitrogen and glycoalkaloid
levels in host plants to the survival and adult size of Leptinotarsa decemlineata, by rearing larvae on whole plants of three potato varieties. Although host plants differed in their glycoalkaloid levels,
survival rate and adult body size did not differ among beetles reared on different potato varieties. This suggests that beetles
are quite robust for differences in both foliar α-chaconine and foliar α-solanine content. However, differences in antixenosis
were found although they could not be directly predicted from the leaf chemistry. Females preferred to lay their eggs on the
variety with high α-solanine content (Nevsky) towards which males showed a tendency to feeding preference. Overall, our results
confirm that beetles are well adapted to the chemical defences of potato plants as potato varieties did not significantly
affect beetle performance, but differences in oviposition preference may still result in major differences in the amount of
damage inflicted on plants in the fields. 相似文献

This work analyses effects of recent variations in the tidal inundation frequency in a mangrove ecosystem in the Bragança peninsula, North Brazil, and its implications for land occupation and use. Field data, time series of remote sensing images and local legislation were analysed focusing on the potential socio-economic impact of a changing environmental setting due to a rise in relative sea level. In the investigated period (1972–1997), vegetation changes along the coastline indicate net losses of mangrove coverage. In the central part of the peninsula, a topographically higher herbaceous plain constituting part of a farm presents an active progression of mangrove forest into an area previously dominated by grasses and herbs. This area measured 8.8 km2 in 1972 but was gradually reduced to 5.6 km2 in 1997, while progressively replaced by a monospecific stand of the black mangrove,Avicennia germinans. A linear extrapolation indicates that the elevated plain may be completely covered by mangrove by 2035. Current Brazilian legislation prohibits the extraction of mangrove trees without an officially approved management plan. Thus, the usable area of the farm has suffered a reduction by ca. 36% over 25 yr and we predict that is could be entirely replaced by mangroves in the next 35 yr. In this case study, legislation and ecosystem characteristics are analysed and a management plan discussed which could represent income alternatives for affected resource users at the local and regional level. 相似文献

Summary. In order to elucidate the composition of the female sex pheromone of the
northern (beech) winter moth, Operophtera fagata
Scharf. (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), ovipositor extracts of unmated, calling females
were analysed by gas chromatography with simultaneous electroantennographic and flame
ionization detection (GC-EAD/FID). Male antennal responses indicated three active
components, two of which had distinct matching peaks in the FID trace. Using coupled
gas chromatography- mass spectrometry (GC-MS), these two compounds were identified as
(9Z)-nonadecene (9Z-19:Hy), and (6Z,9Z)-nonadecadiene (6Z9Z-19:Hy), respectively. The
third component, present in very small amounts only, was identified as (1,3Z,6Z,9Z)-nonadecatetraene
(1,3Z6Z9Z-19:Hy), known as the sex pheromone of the common winter moth,
O. brumata. Field tests revealed that traps baited with 6Z9Z-19:Hy
and 1,3Z6Z9Z-19:Hy caugth large numbers of male O. fagata.
Both compounds were found to be essential for attraction of
O. fagata. In addition,
the diene prevented captures of co-occurring O. brumata.
In contrast, 9Z-19:Hy neither influenced the attractiveness of the two-component mixture
towards O. fagata nor contributed to bait specificity.
A binary mixture of 6Z9Z-19:Hy and 1,3Z6Z9Z-19:Hy in a ratio of 10:1, applied to pieces
of rubber tubing, constituted a highly attractive and species-specific bait for
O. fagata, which can be used for monitoring of the
flight of this defoliator pest of deciduous forests. 相似文献

In mammals with solitary females, the potential for males to monopolize matings is relatively low, and scramble competition polygyny is presumed to be the predominant mating system. However, combinations of male traits and mating tactics within this type of polygyny have been described. The main aim of our study was to identify the relative importance of, and interactions among, potential determinants of contrasting male reproductive tactics, and to determine their consequences for male reproductive success in a small solitary nocturnal Malagasy primate, the gray mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus). We studied their mating behavior over three consecutive annual mating seasons. In addition, we determined the genetic relationships among more than 300 study animals to quantify the reproductive success of individual males. We found that, with a given relatively low overall monopolization potential, successful male mouse lemurs roamed extensively in search of mates, had superior finding ability and mated as early as possible. However, contest competition was important too, as temporary monopolization was also possible. Males exhibited different mating tactics, and heavier males had a higher reproductive success, although most litters had mixed paternities. Switching between tactics depended on short-term local variation in monopolization potential determined by a pronounced dynamic in fertilization probability, number of alternative mating opportunities, and the operational sex ratio. This study also revealed that the dynamics of these determinants, as well as the mutual interactions between them, necessitate a detailed knowledge of the mating behavior of a species to infer the impact of determinants of alternative mating tactics.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available in the online version of this article at

Summary Adult male tree lizards, Urosaurus ornatus, practise alternative (territorial or sneaker/satellite) reproductive strategies that are correlated with differences in throat color and body size. In this study we raised tree lizards from hatching in the laboratory to examine the question of whether the phenotypic expression of secondary sex coloration and body size can be facultatively influenced by social or abiotic environmental factors. We compared males reared in the laboratory under different social and environmental conditions to males in the field and found no effect of different conditions on phenotypic differentiation (Figs. 2–4). Thus, phenotypic differences between morphs probably result largely from nonfacultative expression of different genotypes. This suggests that alternative male morphs practise a mixed evolutionary stable strategy (ESS) rather than one morph making the best of a bad situation. However, in the context of ESS theory it is difficult to explain our further result that the nonterritorial morph in this species grows faster and reaches a larger adult body size than the territorial morph (Fig. 5). 相似文献

In Lepidoptera polyandry is common and females may increase their lifetime reproductive output through repeated matings if they acquire essential resources from male ejaculates. However, the paternity of males mating with previously-mated females is far from assured unless sperm precedence is absolute. In this study on the polyandrous armyworm, Pseudaletia unipuncta, we used two strains of male (the black-eyed wild type and a red-eyed homozygous, recessive mutant), mated with red-eyed females, to determine (i) whether male investment has any impact on female reproductive output, and (ii) if females do benefit from multiple matings, to what extent males fertilize the eggs to which they contributed. Multiple mating resulted in a significant increase in both the fecundity and longevity of females. However, the degree of sperm precedence (those eggs fertilized by the second male) varied from 0–100%, but was not affected by either male size or age, or by the duration of copulation. In cases where sperm precedence was <50% (x = 12%) females produced significantly more eggs (1384 versus 940) prior to the second mating than females where sperm precedence was >50% (x = 89%), indicating that the quality of the first mating influenced the fertilization success of the female's second mate. 相似文献

Summary. We examined the role of plant phenology in the evolution of anti-herbivore defence in symbiotic ant-plant protection mutualisms.
Phenology of the host-plant affects traits of its herbivores, including size, growth rate, development time, and gregariousness.
Traits of herbivores in turn determine what traits ants must have to protect their host. Diversity in plant phenological traits
could thus help explain the great ecological diversity of coevolved ant-plant mutualisms. We explored the postulated causal
chain linking phenology of the plant, herbivore adaptations to phenology, and ant adaptations for protection, by comparing
two myrmecophytes presenting strong contrasts in phenology. In Leonardoxa africana, a slow-growing understory tree, growth at each twig terminal is intermittent, the rapid flushing of a single leaf-bearing
internode being followed by a pause of several months. In contrast, axes of Barteria nigritana, a tree of open areas, grow continuously. Analysis of the phenology (kinetics of expansion) and chemistry of leaf development
(contents of chlorophylls, lignin, and nitrogen during leaf growth) showed that these two species exhibit strongly contrasting
strategies. Leonardoxa exhibited a delayed greening strategy, with rapid expansion of leaves during a short period, followed by synthesis of chlorophylls
and lignins only after final leaf size has been reached. In contrast, leaves of Barteria expanded more slowly, with chlorophylls and lignin gradually synthesised throughout development. Differences in the phenology
of leaf development are reflected in differences in the duration of larval development, and thereby in size, of the principal
lepidopteran herbivores observed on these two plants. This difference may in turn have led to different requirements for effective
defence by ants. The strategy of phenological defence may thus affect the evolution of biotic defence. 相似文献

Many birds and mammals store energy as hoarded food supplies. A supply of stored food is beneficial during periods when food is scarce, but building up and managing such a supply also entails costs. The optimal number of caches will be reached when the net benefit is at its maximum. If dominants can steal more stored food from subordinates than the other way around, the optimum will differ between these categories. A previous theoretical model of hoarding in groups with dominant and subordinate members produced three testable predictions: (1) hoarders should store more food as anticipated future conditions get worse; (2) subordinate flock members should store more food than dominants; and (3) dominants should increase hoarding relatively more than subordinates as conditions get worse. Here we present a field experiment on willow tits (Parus montanus) designed to test these predictions. We found support for all three. Hoarding increased as conditions got worse, subordinates stored at a higher rate than dominants, and dominants increased their hoarding effort relatively more than subordinates as conditions worsened. Summary. The diterpene neocembrene A or (1E,5E,9E,12R)-1,5,9-trimethyl-12-(1-methylethenyl)-1,5,9-cyclotetradecatriene, known as the trail-following pheromone of the advanced Termitidae Nasutitermitinae Nasutitermes exitiosus and Trinervitermes bettonianus, has been identified after SPME-GC/MS as the major component of the trail-following pheromone of the Rhinotermitidae Prorhinotermitinae, Prorhinotermes canalifrons and P. simplex. In all the other Rhinotermitidae studied until now, the major component of their trail pheromones is dodecatrienol ((3Z,6Z,8E)-dodeca-3,6,8-trien-1-ol). This biochemical data further add to the anatomical and molecular characteristics that give a special status to the taxon Prorhinotermes among Rhinotermitidae. In Prorhinotermes canalifrons and P. simplex, neocembrene A was the only secretory compound specific to the sternal gland surface that could be detected after SPME. It elicited orientation as well as recruitment behavioral effects. However, the comparison of the respective biological activities triggered by neocembrene A and by sternal gland secretion suggests that minor components of the latter are acting in synergy with neocembrene A. 相似文献
