Abundance and temporal distribution of viable (able to germinate) resting stage cells of planktonic diatoms in bottom sediments have been investigated almost monthly during 1989 to 1992 in Hiroshima Bay, western part of Seto Inland Sea, Japan. The abundance of viable resting stages in bottom sediments was enumerated with the extinction dilution method (most probable number method, MPN). In bottom sediments of Hiroshima Bay, dominantly distributed species and/ or genera of the diatom resting stages were Skeletonema costatum, Chaetoceros spp. and Thalassiosira spp. Viable resting stages of these diatoms were densely distributed on the orders of 103 to 106 (MPN g−1 wet sediments), and persisted in bottom sediments throughout the investigation period. Conversely, vegetative cells of these diatoms fluctuated remarkably in the water column and disappeared sporadically. Survival of the resting stages in a collected sediment sample was also determined with the MPN method, at different storage temperatures (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 °C). The survival test demonstrated that the diatom resting stages could survive in the dark for several months or years in sediments. Resting stages survived longer at the lower storage temperature, and the order of longevity was consistent within three diatoms (Chaetoceros spp. > Thalassiosira spp. > S. costatum) at each storage temperature. The present study suggests that these diatom resting stages in the coastal bottom sediments could serve as a “seed bank”, analogous to those of terrestrial plants. The seed bank would ensure the survival of diatoms within highly fluctuating coastal environments, while it would also be the source of sporadic and autochthonous diatom blooms in coastal waters. Seasonal variations in Delaware Bay phytoplankton community structure   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Whole-water phytoplankton samples were obtained from 3 stations in Delaware Bay on a once- or twice-monthly basis from June 13, 1974 to May 28, 1975. The flora was composed primarily of small flagellates during the summer and early fall, while diatoms dominated from October to May. Peak cell numbers occurred during fall and early spring blooms. Evenness diversity was lowest during periods of maximum diatom abundance and highest when microflagellates predominated. There was a gradual shift in dominance, except during the early spring Skeletonema costatum bloom. Cluster analysis allowed the separation of the flora into 3 time groups and 8 recurrent species groups. The species composition and community structure of Delaware Bay phytoplankton is compared with other USA east-coast estuaries where comparable sampling techniques have been used.Contribution No. 129 from the Ira C. The effects of ambient solar UV on community productivity and structure were assessed during primary succession of benthic diatoms on artificial substrate in a coral reef of the Caribbean. Artificial substrates, partially enclosed by UV cutoff filters, were placed at a depth of 60 cm below surface. During the initial colonization stages, the assemblages exposed to the full solar spectrum had a mean productivity 43.4% lower than the assemblages exposed to PAR+UVA only. Some differences in species diversity of assemblages under the different UV treatments were also observed. Sensitive species to UVB exposure were Mastogloia angulata, M. ovata, M. paradoxa, Nitzschia longissima, Plagiogramma staurophorum, Rhopalodia musculus, and Surirella ovata. These UVB effects gradually diminished as succession proceeded; 5 to 6 weeks after the placement of the substrates in the water, no significant differences in productivity were observed between the different treatments, while after 6 weeks of growth, species diversity and evenness were higher, although not statistically significant, in the UVB-exposed assemblages. During the first 2 weeks of growth, the productivity under PAR+UVA was significantly lower than that under PAR only. Received: 12 July 1996 / Accepted: 20 November 1997  相似文献

At the compacted, north-south line of the ice edge, phytoplankton were sampled during early austral autumn of 1986 in the northwestern Weddell Sea. Cells from discrete water bottle samples from 12 stations on two east-west transects were counted to gain quantitative information on the composition, abundance, distribution, and condition of the phytoplankton in water-column assemblages. Over 70 species were found. The highest numbers of total cells (integrated through the top 150 m) were found in open water, well-separated from and to the east of the ice edge on the southern transect, with 6.01×1010 cells m-2. The relative abundance of diatoms was low at ice-convered stations (< 35% of the total phytoplankton in preserved samples) and high at open-water stations (> 80%); however, the relative abundance of the prymnesiophyte Phaeocystis sp. was high at ice-covered stations (> 60%) and low at open-water stations (< 16%), with lower absolute abundances than during a previous austral-spring phytoplankton increase. In the open ocean, the dominants were the pennate diatoms Fragilariopsis cylindrus, Pseudonitzschia prolongatoides, F. curta, and a small form of the centric diatom Chaetoceros dichaeta in chains. Although the three pennate diatoms were frequently dominant in number, they represented less biomass than C. dichaeta in open waters. Mean phytoplankton abundance was low (0.2×106 cells l-1) but, overall, the diatom cell density (0.14×106 cells l-1) was similar to that found previously during a northward transect from ice-covered to ice-free water at the Weddell-Scotia Sea ice edge (spring 1983). The phytoplankton spatial patterns in the two autumn transects differed, with the more southerly transect exhibiting a higher abundance of diatoms and dinoflagellates. The ratio of full to empty diatoms was higher on the southern transect, indicating a healthy population, while lower ratios of full/empty frustules on the northern transect suggested a generally declining population. However, Phaeocystis sp. was more abundant on the northern transect.  相似文献

Diel periodicity of photosynthesis in marine phytoplankton   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Short-term changes in photosynthesis were documented for 17 of 24 marine phytoplankton species, representing a range of taxonomic groups. Periodicity in phytoplankton photosynthesis on light-dark cycles (diel periodicity) was widespread but not universal for the species studied. The centric diatoms Lauderia borealis, Ditylum brightwellii, Stephanopyxis turris, Coscinodiscus rex, Chaetoceros gracile, and Biddulphia mobiliensis had strong diel periodicity in photosynthetic capacity (P max). Amplitudes of the daily variations ranged from 2.9 to >50, with maxima in the morning or near midday, and with minima during the dark period, and these variations were not dependent on changes in cell pigmentation. There was some evidence for sustained photosynthetic periodicity in constant conditions in several diatoms, and an endogenous rhythm may have been present. The photosynthesis-irradiance (P-I) relationship was time-dependent for representative marine diatoms, with both the initial slope () and the asymptote (P max) of P-I curves exhibiting significant synchronous diel oscillations. Moreover, detailed studies of the amplitude and timing of photosynthetic periodicity for the diatoms L. borealis and D. brightwellii demonstrated large temporal variations in photosynthesis with morning maxima. These P-I oscillations are discussed with reference to models of primary production which use the relationship between photosynthesis and light as a component of predictive equations for phytoplankton growth in the sea.  相似文献

The relationship between Penaeus merguiensis protozoea larvae and their phytoplankton diet was examined using seasonal plankton surveys and in situ rearing experiments. Larval abundance, phytoplankton community structure, and chlorophyll a concentration in Albatross Bay, Gulf of Carpentaria, were monitored monthly for 2 yr. Larval abundance peaked in November (spring) and March (autumn), at which times diatoms were the most abundant group in net samples of phytoplankton and in the guts of larvae. During November 1989 and March 1990, larvae were reared in nylon mesh enclosures positioned throughout the water column at three depths: 0 to 3 m, 3 to 6 m and 6 to 9 m. Overall, larval survival and gut fullness were both higher in November than in March. In both months, larval survival was lower at the surface than at other depths. This correlated with lower chlorophyll a concentrations, but lower total cell densities were not detected. During the in situ experiments, diatoms were the most abundant phytoplankton group in the water column and in the guts of larvae and, therefore, appeared to be the principal diet of larvae. Pigment analysis demonstrated that while gut contents generally reflected the composition of the phytoplankton community, the larvae were not feeding exclusively on diatoms. They also ingested green algae and possibly seagrass detritus. The in situ experiments demonstrated that the predominantly diatom flora in Albatross Bay can provide a nutritionally adequate environment for prawn larvae even at seasonally low levels. It is unlikely, therefore, that starvation is a major cause of mortality of P. merguiensis larvae during either of the biannual peaks in their abundance in Albatross Bay, Gulf of Carpentaria.  相似文献

Egg production and viability in the copepod Temora stylifera (collected in the Bay of Naples, Italy in 1992) were strongly dependent on food type. A flagellate (Isochrysis galbana) diet induced the production of good quality eggs that developed to hatching. By contrast, two diatoms (Chaetoceros curvisetum, Phaeodactylum tricornutum) resulted in poor egg quality, with hatching success as low as 20% of total egg production. With the third diatom tested, Skeletonema costatum, females produced eggs for only 3 to 4 d, after which time they either became sterile or died. These results are discussed in relation to previous findings regarding the impact of the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum and the diatom Thalassiosira rotula on the hatching success of T. stylifera eggs. Low egg viability was possibly not due to an absence of remating or a deficiency of some specific essential nutrient required for egg development but to the presence of inhibitory compounds blocking cell division during early copepod embryogenesis. This questions the traditional view that diatoms are an important food item regulating copepod secondary production.  相似文献

The effect of nutrient (N, P, and Si) depletion on sinking rates was studied for two small (Skeletonema costatum (Grev.) Cleve and Chaetoceros gracile Schütt) and two large [Ditylum brightwellii (West) Grun and Coscinodiscus wailesii (Gran et Angst)] centric diatoms obtained from stock cultures. Each diatom was examined under conditions of (1) nutrient repletion (=log growth phase), (2) nutrient depletion (48 h without a given substrate), and (3) recovery (24h after addition of limiting substrate to nutrient-deplete populations). All nutrient-replete cultures displayed low sinking rates despite large differences in cell size. In nutrient-deplete populations, sinking rate was related to the kind of nutrient depleted and varied among species. Silicate depletion elicited by far the greatest increase in sinking rates in all 4 species, indicating that biochemical aspects of silicon metabolism are more important to buoyancy regulation than density-related variations in the amount of silicon per cell. Since N- and P-depletion caused lower sinking rates in 3 of the species, this observation calls for re-evaluation of the axiom that nutrient depletion necessarily causes increased sinking rates. The exception was Coscinodiscus wailesii, which sank faster under all types of nutrient limitation. In most cases, sinking rates typical of log-phase cultures were not regained within 24 h after the addition of limiting nutrient to nutrient-depleted populations. Ultimately, the length of the recovery period may be useful in identifying the metabolic processes responsible for buoyancy regulation in actively growing cells.  相似文献

Coccolithophores, together with other phytoplankton, were sampled at ten stations along a transect following the general orientation of the Cape Peninsula upwelling plume in March, 1983. Thirteen coccolithophore species were identified with Emiliania huxleyi dominating the assemblages. Coccolithophores and other microflagellates were more abundant than diatoms along the transect except at one station in mature upwelled water. Very high populations (2 340×103 cells l-1) of coccolithophores were found in mature upwelled water adjacent to the oceanic front. This count is one of the highest counts ever recorded in an upwelling area. The anomalous warm event prior to sampling may have had a residual effect on seeding, contributing towards the predominance of small-celled phytoplankton over chain-forming diatoms.  相似文献

An anticyclonic slope water oceanic eddy (SWODDY), named AE6, was sampled in the southern Bay of Biscay from 12 to 31 August 1998 to assess changes in the abundance and composition of phytoplankton assemblages related to the mesoscale feature. SWODDY AE6 showed characteristic biological signatures. A twofold increase in chlorophyll a concentration was found at the eddy centre relative to surrounding waters. Picoplankton cells accounted for a lower fraction of total chlorophyll a values at the eddy centre (44–50%) than outside the eddy (54–61%). Microscopic cell counts and HPLC pigment analysis showed that diatoms were almost entirely confined to the eddy centre, but both techniques yielded different results when studying other phytoplankton groups. Microscopic cell counts indicated that the spatial distribution of diatoms, dinoflagellates and unidentified flagellates was significantly influenced by SWODDY AE6, showing maximum abundance inside the mesoscale feature. HPLC pigment analysis provided more detailed information about the composition of pico–nanoplanktonic organisms. Pigment data processed by means of the CHEMTAX program showed "chlorophytes", "haptophytes" and "dinoflagellates II" (having haptophyte-like pigments and gyroxanthin-diester) as the more abundant "pigment classes" at the eddy centre, whereas dominance of "chlorophytes" and higher contribution of "cyanobacteria" (type Synechococcus) were estimated in the surrounding waters.Communicated by S.A. We investigated the effects of light quality on resting stage cell germination and vegetative cell growth of meroplanktonic diatoms in a small port in Hakata Bay, Japan and in the laboratory. During the investigation over the year of 2006, the meroplanktonic diatom bloom first occurred in the end of May and then repeated wane and wax until October in the small port. From late April to middle May, light penetrating the water column was often strong and attenuations of all spectral lights were low. During this period, Skeletonema costatum, Thalassiosira minima, and Chaetoceros sp. appeared frequently, followed by the blooms of S. costatum and Chaetoceros sp. in late May. Thereafter, S. costatum and Chaetoceros sp. bloomed in late June but not in middle June, when pigmented flagellates bloom appeared. The attenuation of short-wavelength light such as violet and blue lights was markedly high during these diatom and flagellate blooms; all blooms disappeared within several days. Vegetative cell strains of the three diatoms under light emitting diodes (LEDs) with six different spectra (violet, blue, green, orange, red, and near-infrared) grew at a higher rate under short-wavelength light, violet and blue. On the other hand, when suspensions of bottom sediments from Hakata Bay were cultured under the same LEDs and in the dark, vegetative cells of S. costatum appeared under all LEDs except for orange and near-infrared, vegetative cells of T. minima appeared under all LEDs but not in the dark, and vegetative cells of Chaetoceros sp. appeared under violet and blue LEDs. However, vegetative cell densities of the three diatoms increased much more under violet light than under other LEDs within a short period (6 days). Our study indicates that underwater penetration by short-wavelength light, such as violet and blue, may be an important factor in the initiation and development of meroplanktonic diatom blooms.  相似文献

Ingestion and egg production by Acartia hudsonica (5°C) and A. tonsa (10°C) from Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, USA, was measured in the laboratory over a range of concentrations of the prymnesiophyte Phaeocystis pouchetii and the diatom Skeletonema costatum. Both Acartia species reproduced well when fed unialgal diets of S. costatum. Egg production by females fed P. pouchetii, either as gelatioous colonies (primarily >200 m in diameter) or solitary cells (3 to 5 m), was not significantly different than that of starved females. Acartia spp. fed selectively on S. costatum in multialgal treatments. The presence of P. pouchetii did not reduce ingestion of S. costatum; the availability of S. costatum did not increase ingestion of P. pouchetii. Nauplii of A. hudsonica grew equally well on separate diets of P. pouchetii and Isochrysis galbana, two flagellates of similar size. Adult Acartia spp. reproduced poorly when fed these phytoplankton, suggesting that particle size may be more important than food quality in describing the responses. Grazing by Acartia spp. does not directly impact the dynamics of P. pouchetii, but may indirectly contribute to blooms of this prymnesiophyte by removal of competing phytoplankton.  相似文献

The pH on the frustule of individual cells of the marine centric diatoms Coscinodiscus granii and Coscinodiscus wailesii (Bacillariophyceae) was measured with pH microsensors in culture media with increasing pH values of 8.04, 8.14, and 8.22, respectively. In 85–96% of the C. granii cells the pH on the frustule was up to 0.4 units higher than that of the medium, reaching a maximum pH 8.95. Only in 2–3% the surface pH exceeded that of the medium by up to 0.7 pH units. These results strongly suggest that diatoms in batch cultures differ, at least temporarily, in their individual photosynthetic activities. Infection experiments with the parasitoid nanoflagellate Pirsonia diadema (Stramenopile) showed that flagellates failed to infect when the culture pH was 8.8 and above. pH measurements on freshly infected C. granii showed that the prevalence of infection was higher in tendency on diatoms with low surface pH. Application of these results to parasitoid-diatom interactions in natural waters suggests that within phytoplankton populations a strong photosynthetic activity might prevent diatom cells temporarily from infection by pH-sensitive parasitoids.  相似文献

From July to September 1982 feeding experiments were conducted with 138-mm fork length Atlantic menhaden Brevoortia tyrannus (Latrobe) (Pisces: Clupeidae) to determine their particle size-specific feeding abilities. Monoculture clearing-rate experiments showed that the minimum size of particles filtered, the minimum size threshold, for 138-mm fish is 7 to 9 m. Filtration efficiency for three species of phytoplankton below the minimum size threshold. Pseudoisochrysis paradoxa, Monochrysis lutheri, and Isochrysis galbana, averaged 1.0% (n=14). Tetraselmis suecica, Prorocentrum minimum, and 2-celled Skeleionema costatum, phytoplankton which are larger than the minimum size threshold and smaller than the 20-m upper limit for nanoplankton, were filtered at efficiencies averaging 21% (n=24). S. costatum chains of 3 to 6 cells, prey particles exceeding the size limits of nanoplankton, were filtered at average efficiencies ranging from 22 to 84%. The mean filtration efficiency for Artemia sp. nauplii (San Francisco Bay Brand) of 36% (n=7) was lower than for smaller phytoplankton prey. The presence of detritus at concentrations usually encountered in nature enhanced filtering efficiency and lowered minimum size thresholds at which phytoplankton were retained. For small food particles, filtering efficiency decreased as swimming speed of the menhaden increased. As menhaden grow, their feeding tepertoire shifts to larger planktonic organisms.Contribution No. 1201 Virginia Institute of Marine Science  相似文献

Nucleic acid aptamers are small-size ligands that selectively bind to molecular segments even when they protrude from cell surfaces. Due to their high specificity, aptamers are widely used in biomedical research and as probes for different applications. Here, we tested whether aptamers can also discriminate among phytoplankton cells. As a proof of concept we focused on the widespread centric diatom Leptocylindrus danicus and generated two aptamers that selectively bind to its cell surface. The aptamers did not bind to other diatoms tested, which included both pennate (Pseudo-nitzschia multistriata) and centric (Skeletonema marinoi, Chaetoceros socialis) species. They also showed negative binding to closely related species (Tenuicylindrus belgicus, Leptocylindrus aporus, Leptocylindrus convexus), which are hardly recognizable with microscopy techniques. In addition, aptamers discriminated also among cells of the same clone, suggesting a potential use of aptamers as clone-specific/stage-specific probes to track phytoplankton life stages in their natural environment. While the method still needs to be tested with natural algal samples, it can complement in a unique way the existing approaches to discriminate among species and possibly life stages of marine phytoplankton. The method can find useful application in taxonomic and ecological studies as well as in environmental monitoring including early warning strategies.  相似文献

Inhibition of photosynthesis and cell division by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was studied using 7 marine phytoplankton species representing 4 algal classes. PCB concentrations as low as 1.0 g l-1 reduced cell division of Thalassiosira pseudonana 3H and Isochrysis galbana. Both photosynthesis and cell division of T. pseudonana 3H, Chaetoceros socialis, Skeletonema costatum, T. pseudonana 13-1, Monochrysis, lutheri and I. galbana were inhibited at a PCB concentration of 10.0 g l-1. The effects on photosynthesis were immediate and probably resulted in reduced rates of cell division. Interspecific differences in susceptibility were observed. These differences have significance with respect to primary production and the species composition of phytoplankton communities. The initial slopes of photosynthesis-irradiance (P-I) curves for the diatoms S. costatum and T. pseudonana 3H were reduced in the presence of PCBs. These results suggest that PCBs affect the photosynthetic light reactions.  相似文献

We measured development, growth and juvenile mortality of the common copepod Temora longicornis on 11 different monospecific diatom diets in order to estimate (1) how common the negative effects of diatoms are on the development of this copepod and (2) whether the arrested development is connected to deleterious polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUA) or food nutritional quality. Four diatom species (Thalassiosira weissflogii, Thalassiosira rotula CCMP1647, Leptocylindricus danicus CCPM469 and Skeletonema costatum CCMP1281) supported complete development, whereas development failed in or before metamorphosis on seven diatom species/strains (Chaetoceros affinis CCMP158, C. decipiens CCMP173, C. socialis, T. rotula CCMP1018, Thalassiosira pseudonana CCMP1010 and CCMP1335). However, four out of these seven species were not ingested by nauplii, either due to morphology (Chaetoceros spp.) or large size (T. pseudonana CCMP1010). The growth rate did not correlate with the ingestion rate of PUA, neither with ingestion of food mineral (nitrogen) nor with biochemical (polyunsaturated fatty acids, sterols) components. We show that, although some diatoms are of inferior food quality, this is unlikely to be connected to toxicity or due to a direct limitation by a single food nutritional compound.  相似文献

The surface abundance and species composition of phytoplankton communities were studied in a section across the continental shelf between the Río de La Plata and the oceanic waters of the Subtropical Convergence, during late spring (November 1999). Algal communities were examined using light microscopy and HPLC-derived (high-performance liquid chromatography) pigment concentrations. The CHEMTAX program was used to estimate the chlorophyll a (chl a) biomass of different algal classes. The inclusion of the most abundant members of the chl c pigment family (chl c1, chl c2, chl c3 and chl c2 monogalactosyldiacylglyceride esters) in the pigment matrix improved the CHEMTAX interpretation of field data. Using this novel approach four haptophyte populations were distinguished across the studied section, even though they had qualitatively similar pigment signatures, although one subtype lacked 19-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin (Hex-Fuco). Five different phytoplankton assemblages, spatially segregated by the prevailing environmental conditions, were distinguished during the studied period. All of them showed a complex community structure, formed by a background of small-sized cells such as cyanobacteria, cryptophytes, haptophytes and prasinophyceans, on which diatom, cryptophyte or some haptophyte blooms were overlapped. In the estuarine assemblage, where maximum chl a concentrations where found, diatoms were always the dominant group (30–60% of total chl a), but cryptophytes (10–40%), prasinophyceans (2–20%) and dinoflagellates (2–12%) were also relevant. In the coastal assemblage diatoms were also the dominant group (35–45%), but haptophytes lacking Hex-Fuco were subdominant (20–35%). The continental shelf assemblage showed an almost exclusive dominance (90%) of haptophytes resembling the coccolithophorid E. huxleyi. Another haptophyte (Phaeocystis sp.) was dominant (75–85%) in the Malvinas Current assemblage. The Brazil Current assemblage was characterized by the codominance of cyanobacteria (45%) and haptophytes (35%). These results are discussed in relationship to the complex hydrographic features of the area.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe  相似文献

We estimated silicate uptake kinetics for 8 spring diatom species using a model based on time series measurements of the depletion of dissolved silicate (DSi) and increases in biomass. Furthermore, the carbon: nitrogen: silicate stoichiometric relationships and maximum growth rates were determined. Differences in DSi uptake kinetics and maximum growth rate were distinct among the species. All the most common diatom species (Chaetoceros wighamii, Pauliella taeniata, Skeletonema costatum and Thalassiosira baltica) were relatively lightly silicified and had variable but relatively low half-saturation constants (K s ), indicating that they are well adapted to low DSi concentrations. The less common Diatoma tenuis and Nitzschia frigida had higher K s values, suggesting that they are more vulnerable to DSi limitation. The much used nitrogen:silicate ratio of 1 for marine diatom biomass was too low for most of the examined species, while a ratio of 2–3 seems to be more appropriate for these Baltic Sea species.  相似文献

In most areas of the north-eastern Atlantic Ocean, diatoms have declined drastically in abundance in the last decade. Additionally, in areas to the north of 59°N Ceratium species and an index of total phytoplankton have also declined. South of 59°N the phytoplankton index has increased, diatoms have declined and Ceratium species have remained at a constant level of abundance. A possible explanation of the increase in the phytoplankton index at a time when the diatoms were declinig south of 59°N is the development of unidentified phytoplankton organisms such as microflagellates. As many of the variables influencing phytoplankton standing crop are governed in turn by the prevailing weather, the phytoplankton changes may well be a consequence of the general deterioration, since 1940, of North Atlantic weather. Changes in phytoplankton which may be attributed to an amelioration of climate since 1971 are evident as yet only in the southern North Sea.  相似文献
