Effects of crude oil and salinity stress on the metabolism of two common filter-feeding animals (Mytilus edulis and Modiolus demissus) have been investigated. Carbon budgets have been calculated for each species under a variety of combinations of oil content and salinity. Both reduced salinity and the presence of crude oil tend to decrease the net carbon flux for each species; stresses from each source interacted in their effects on experimental animals. Although similar responses to oil were shown by each species, Mytilus edulis appeared to be slightly more resistant to oil than Modiolus demissus.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments have been conducted on byssus thread production by two species of mussel, Mytilus edulis L. and Modiolus modiolus (L.), representing the epibyssate and endobyssate species of the Mytilidae, respectively. Mussels were placed in seven particle sizes of sediment ranging from 50 m to 16 mm for 12 d. The number of byssus threads per mussel, length of threads, number of threads per particle and size of pads were then recorded. Modiolus modiolus (endobyssate) produced more threads than Mytilus edulis (epibyssate). M. edulis produced most threads in the size range 2 to 16 mm and Modiolus modiolus in the size range 500 to 1000 m. M. modiolus produced longer threads than Mytilus edulis. Both species produced longer threads in particle sizes finer than 2 mm. M. edulis produced smaller pads than Modiolus modiolus. Both species produced larger pads in sediments coarser than 1 000 m. Results were also analysed in terms of attachment units (a thread attached to one or more particles, or a particle to which more than one thread is attached). The thread:particle ratio of the attachment units ranged from ca. 1:10 in the finest sediments to ca. 10:1 in the coarsest sediments. Mytilus edulis attached more threads to single particles (72% of attachment units) than Modiolus modiolus (37% of attachment units). M. modiolus had a wider spread of ratios in the finer particle sizes than Mytilus edulis. The significance of our results are discussed in relation to the ecology and palaeoecology of epibyssate and endobysste species.  相似文献

The upper temperature tolerance range for Trichomya hirsuta L. is described for acclimation temperatures of 10° to 32°C at 30% S. Changes in thermal resistance with time are described along with the incipient lethal temperatures. The eurythermicity for the species is 240.7 C°-squared. The ultimate upper incipient lethal temperature is 35.1°C. Definition of the incipient sublethal temperature is given, and is equal to 32°C. Diet effects are shown not to be significant in short-term lethal experiments, but indicate that unfed mussels reduce their resistance after prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Size was also shown to have no effect on resistance and tolerance. A comparison of the tolerance triangle of T. hirsuta with those of the temperate species Mytilus edulis and Mya arenaria revealed that the 24-h LT50 minus 2.2 C° approximates the incipient lethal temperature. The eurythermicities of the temperate species are Mytilus edulis, 363 C°-squared; and Mya arenaria, 415 C°-squared.  相似文献

An entire bed of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis, consisting of 5,000 individuals/m2, died during June, 1971 in the effluent canal of a steam generating plant when the temperature increased above 27°C. Similarly, the population in the intake canal disappeared when temperatures rose above 27°C in August. Laboratory studies showed that M. edulis could not tolerate continuous temperatures above 27°C, and feeding stopped shortly after the mussels were exposed to 25°C. Histopathological studies indicated that the cause of death of this bivalve was associated with degeneration of the frontal and laterofrontal cilia of the columnar epithelium of the gill filaments. In conjuction with this, there was necrosis and sloughing of the epithelium of the intestinal diverticula. Mussels, Mytilus edulis L., were subjected to high temperatures, low salinities and dissolved zinc in order to investigate possible environmental hazards of a discharge of heated effluent near Newport on the Yarra River estuary, Victoria, Australia. Exposure to zinc at 0.8 mg l-1 for 14 d in otherwise favourable conditions significantly increased mortality resulting from subsequent exposure to temperatures between 29° to 31°C for 24 h without added zinc. Mussels collected from water of temporarily lowered salinity (8–16 S) showed significantly lower thermal resistance than controls collected from marine salinities (35 S). Mussels taken from a marine environment and exposed to 10 S died at a rate which increased with temperature. Mussels acclimated for 14 d to combinations of 10°, 16° and 22°C and 22 and 35 S, and subsequently exposed to increased zinc concentrations accumulated zinc to levels which were independent of temperature and salinity. The zinc was lethal more quickly at 22°C and 35 S than at the lower temperatures and salinities. The modes of toxic action of the salinity, zinc and temperature factors are discussed and it is argued that zinc which has been found accumulated in mussels near Newport could be reducing their resistance to raised temperatures and perhaps other stresses, probably as a result of effects on lysosomal functioning. The evidence suggests that the heated effluent will accelerate any toxic effects of zinc or low salinities which occur near Newport and so poses a hazard in winter as well as in summer.  相似文献

Juvenile weakfish, Cynoscion regalis (Bloch and Schneider, 1801), exhibit significant spatial diffrences in growth rate and condition factor among estuarine nursery zones in Delaware Bay. The potential influence of temperature and salinity on the suitability of estuarine nursery areas for juvenile weakfish was investigated in laboratory experiments by measuring ad libitum feeding rate, growth rate and gross growth efficiency of juveniles collected in Delaware Bay in 1990 (40 to 50 mm standard length; 1.4 to 2.1 g) in 12 temperature/salinity treatments (temperatures: 20, 24, 28°C; salinities: 5, 12, 19, 26 ppt) representing conditions encountered in different estuarine zones during spring/summer. Feeding rates (FR) increased significantly with temperature at all salinities, ranging from 10 to 15% body wt d-1 at 20°C to 33–39% body wt d-1 at 28°C. Specific growth rates (SGR) ranged from 1.4 to 9.4% body wt d-1 (0.3 to 1.5 mm d-1) and gross growth efficiencies (K 1) varied from 13.6 to 26.4% across temperature/salinity combinations. Based on nonlinear multiple regression models, predicted optimal temperatures for SGR and K 1 were 29 and 27°C, respectively. Salinity effects on SGR and K 1 were significant at 24 and 28°C where predicted optimal salinity was 20 ppt. At these warmer temperatures, SGR and K 1 were significantly lower at 5 than at 19 ppt despite higher FR at 5 ppt. Therefore, maximum growth rate and growth efficiency occurred under conditions characteristic of mesohaline nurseries. This finding is consistent with spatial patterns of growth in Delaware Bay, implying that physicochemical gradients influence the value of particular estuarine zones as nurseries for juvenile weakfish by affecting the energetics of feeding and growth. Laboratory results indicate a seasonal shift in the location of physiologically optimal nurseries within estuaries. During late spring/early summer, warmer temperatures in oligohaline areas permit higher feeding rate and faster growth compared to mesohaline areas. By mid-late summer, spatial temperature gradients diminish and mesohaline areas provide more suitable physicochemical conditions for growth rate and growth efficiency whereas oligohaline areas become energetically stressful. Substantial mortality occurred at 5 ppt and 28°C, providing additional evidence that oligohaline conditions are stressful during late summer. Furthermore, juveniles provided a choice among salinities in laboratory trials preferred those salinities which promoted higher growth rates. The extensive use of oligohaline nurseries by juvenile weakfish despite the potential for reduced growth rate and growth efficiency suggests this estuarine zone may provide a substantial refuge from predation.  相似文献

Tigriopus brevicornis (O. F. Müller) were collected in 1992 from rock pools close to U.M.B.S. Millport, Isle of Cumbrae, U.K. and acclimated to various combinations of salinity and temperature for at least 1 wk prior to laboratory experiments. Higher salinities of acclimation enhanced tolerance to high salinity stress, while tolerance of low salinities was hardly affected by acclimation salinity. Acclimation to low temperature (10°C) extended the survivable salinity range for T. brevicornis. High-salinity acclimation enhanced the survivable temperature range. Copepods acclimated to 60 survived significantly lower and higher temperatures than did 34-acclimated individuals. At high temperature, 75-acclimated female copepods had the highest median lethal temperature, 38.9°C. Females were significantly more resistant to high temperatures than males. The copepods were seen to have a very low median lethal temperature when frozen into solid ice for 2 h; 50% mortality occurred at-16.9°C in 10°C, 34-acclimated T. brevicornis. Salinity preference experiments demonstrated an ability to discriminate between salinities differing by as little as 3. Copepods acclimated to 34 chose salinities near their acclimation salinity; individuals acclimated to 5 favoured slightly higher salinities, while copepods acclimated to 60 chose rather lower salinities.  相似文献

The growth and mortality of experimentally-rafted Mytilus edulis L. of known age at 7 locations in a northern estuary (Damariscotta River, Maine, USA) were related to environmental temperatures and to the presence or absence of various potential food sources. All particles were regarded as potential food substrates. Growth decreased appreciably at sites where water temperatures exceeded 20°C, but mussels survived a wide range of elevated temperature exposures, ranging from 0 to 149 degree-days in excess of 20°C. The maximum temperature was 25°C. Mortalities of mussels at all sites but did affect the extent of mortality, which increased abruptly in late summer, when water temperatures were declining. Differences in degree-days of exposure to elevated temperatures did not influence the timing of mortality, which occurred synchronously at all times, but did affect the extent of mortality, which ranged from 35 to 90%. The period of high mortality was preceded by a rapid decline in phytoplankton standing crop. Total particle concentrations decreased during this period, but the shift toward larger particles suggests that there was little, if any, decrease in total volume of material in the seston, at least through August. It is suggested that living phytoplankton provided the critical energy source for these mussels, and that the mortalities were caused by rapidly reduced ration at a time of metabolic stress. The role of temperature and the possible role of the gametogenic cycle are discussed. In addition, the feeding efficiency of M. edulis may have decreased during this period due to an increase in mean particle diameter. Chlorophyll was divided into a nannoplankton fraction (<-20 m) and a larger fraction (>20 m). A smaller size criterion for this distinction is proposed for future studies. The importance of nannoplankton to the primary production of this estuary and the role of nannoplankton and nannoplankton-sized particles in the diet of mussels in nature are discussed.  相似文献

Exposure of blue mussels (Mytilus edulis L.) to oil-polluted sea water for 7 d in the laboratory did not affect their body fluid concentrations of inorganic ions and free amino acids. Mussels exposed to-4°C for 12 h did not freeze, whereas freezing occurred invariably in mussels exposed to-7°C or lower temperatures for the same period. Following freezing at-10°C, oil polluted mussels resumed normal activity considerably more slowly than unpolluted ones, but oil-polluted as well as unpolluted mussels showed normal activity 3 h after thawing. Freezing at-15°C was invariably lethal to individuals of both groups. One possible explanation of the delayed recovery of oil-polluted mussels frozen at-10°C may be that oil components had become concentrated to toxic levels as the amount of solvent water diminished during freezing.  相似文献

Combined effects of temperature, salinity and nutrition on larval survival and growth of the European oyster Ostrea edulis L. were studied over a period of seven days in the laboratory. Larvae were obtained in August 1985 from oysters reared under field conditions on the Mediterranean coast. Four temperatures (15°, 20°, 25°, 30°C), four salinities (20, 25, 30, 35 S) and two levels of nutrition (fed or unfed) were used in the experimental design; the fed larvae received a mixed algal diet of Isochrysis galbana and Chaetoceros calcitrans forma pumilum at a concentration of 100 cells per microlitre. Larvae survived over a wide range of temperature and salinity; statistical analysis indicated that nutrition had the greatest effect on the development of O. edulis larvae, explaining 85 to 88% of the variance in growth. Compared with temperature, the effect of salinity was very slight, usually statistically insignificant. The combined effects of temperature and nutrition produced the only significant interaction. Growth of starved larvae seems to be independent of both temperature and salinity within the range of levels tested.  相似文献

A strong clinal change in salinity occurs between the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, Atlantic Ocean, in the Danish Straits, where hybridization zone between mussels Mytilus edulis and M. trossulus has been reported. Eleven samples of mussels were studied from the Danish Straits and the inner Baltic Sea. Extensive introgression of M. edulis alleles from the North Sea into populations throughout the Baltic was ascertained for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and two nuclear markers (ME15–16 and ITS). In the opposite direction, introgression of M. trossulus alleles into the M. edulis background was observed at the EFbis nuclear marker in populations from Kattegat (Danish Straits). While only M. edulis F (female) mtDNA was present in the Baltic, there were still strong differences in frequencies in the control region length variants between the Danish Straits and the inner Baltic samples, and weaker variation in coding region ND2–COIII haplotype frequencies. In the assays of the two mtDNA regions, various patterns of heteroplasmy were detected in 32% of all the studied individual mussels; this includes the presence of distinct, independently inherited M and F mitochondria in males, as well as the presence of two different distinguishable F genomes. The male-inherited M mtDNA genomes are quite common in the mussels from the Danish Straits, but very rare in males from the inner Baltic. Instead, a recombined control region variant (1r), which seems to have taken over the role of the M genome, was present in a number of specimens in the Baltic. Observations of heteroplasmy for two F genomes in some females and males confirm disruptions of the doubly uniparental inheritance mechanism in the hybrid Baltic Mytilus.  相似文献

The long, drifting threads secreted by young post-larval mussels (Mytilus edulis L.) are simple monofilaments, distinct in form and function from the attachment byssus threads. The diameters of both thread types are in the micron or sub-micron range but, whereas the attachment threads are of restricted length and terminate in an attachment plaque, drifting threads exceed the post-larva in length by more than two orders in magnitude and are without plaques or any other structures. Transmission electron micrographs of drifting threads show no evidence of internal sub-structure. In contrast, attachment threads appear to be made up of filaments. These studies confirm that the drifting threads are highly effective in enhancing the dispersal of young mussels. The terminal sinking velocity of young drifters is typically ca. 1 mm s-1. At this velocity the suspension range above the sea bed, assuming given values of vertical diffusivity, is estimated to be 0.5 to 5 m. Calculations of the fluid drag experienced by post-larvae in the water column show that the theoretical viscous drag force on the thread is sufficient to account for the reduced sinking rate of drifters. The calculated contribution of the thread to the total drag is approximately one order of magnitude greater than that of the post-larval body. A rapid thread-deployment strategy, shown by post-larvae which are brought into suspension, may prolong each drifting excursion and thus further enhance dispersal in turbulent marine environments.  相似文献

Veliger larvae of Mytilus edulis (L.) from Menai Straits, North Wales, were maintained for up to 2 mo during 1981 at 5°C and then grown on to metamorphosis at 17°C. Larvae so treated showed similar low mortality and equivalent spat production to control larvae. Growth rate at 17°C was less in treated larvae than in controls, but treated larvae grew a little during the period at low temperature. Larvae of Pecten maximus (L.) from the Irish Sea suffered high mortality at low temperature but larvae surviving 2 wk at 8°C could be grown on to spat at 17°C. The longevity of M. edulis larvae is discussed in relation to the genetic homogeneity of adult populations around the UK.  相似文献

In a series of experiments 174, 120 and 139 individuals of the teleost Tilapia mossambica (Peters), were acclimated to 30°C and to salinities of 0.4, 12.5 and 30.5, respectively. The effect of temperature and salinity upon oxygen consumption was studied by abruptly transferring fish of different wet weights to temperatures from 15° to 40°C at an average initial pO2 of 250mm Hg. At each salinity, the proportionate response to temperature is size-independent. The metabolic rate increases as a function of temperature at 15° and 30°C but not at 40°C. Oxygen consumption is, however, salinity dependent; maximum rates are obtained at 12.5S. This salinity is isotonic in the 80 g fish and, to a lesser extent, in the 5 g fish. Reduction in osmotic load is suggested as the probable cause for a greater scope for activity and greater rate of oxygen consumption in 12.5 salinity.  相似文献

Sequential alternation of extracellular digestion in the stomach and intracellular digestion in the diverticula appears widespread among bivalves. The present study documents some physiological consequences of such processes in Mytilus edulis L. collected during 1981 from Whitsand Bay, Cornwall, England. Pronounced temporal fluctuations in faecal deposition are described that relate, in terms of amplitude and period, to both sinusoidal rhythmicity established for ammonia excretion and changes in the morphology of digestive tubules. Although at least partially synchronised among replicate groups of mussels, these cycles bore no consistent relationship with exogenous influences. Hourly fluctuation in the net absorption efficiency for nitrogen, as evidenced by the mean percentage ±2 SE, measured over 24 h sampling periods, was considerable (16.0±53.7, 49.3±10.9 and 52.8±6.6 for mussels acclimated in March, June and October, respectively). This variation in absorption derived from an inverse relationship between the percentage nitrogen within faeces and the rate of faecal egestion. Accordingly, peaks of faecal deposition presumably represented the pulsed remnants of intracellular digestion. Co-ordinated rhythms of digestion, absorption and excretion were thus evident in M. edulis. These processes displayed seasonally dependent periodicities of approximately 8, 3 and 4 h in March, June and October, respectively. It was concluded that, at least for M. edulis, this previously unquantified rhythmicity of physiological processes warrants careful consideration during assays commonly undertaken in the complication of nutrient and energy budgets.  相似文献

Anaerobic heat-production rates of two co-occurring species of estuarine bivalves (a clam and a mussel) were measured with double-twin heat-flow calorimeters, one at 20°C, the other at 30°C. There is no significant difference between the two species in metabolic rates. There is evidence of initial aerobic metabolism in some individuals, as shown by high initial rates exponentially decreasing with time, while others had fluctuating but stable average metabolic activity from the beginning. During aerobic as well as anaerobic metabolism, the bivalves showed rhythmic periods of activity and quiescence. The two species differed in their rhythmic pattern of active and resting metabolism. In the case ofPolymesoda caroliniana, periods of resting metabolism tend to be longer and periods of active metabolism shorter at 30°C than at 20°C. There is a similarity between thermograms ofModiolus demissus at 20° and 30°C. Following acute temperature changes from 5° to 20° and 30°C, the bivalves showed stable metabolic rates in a matter of hours. The stabilized average rates [pooled averages for both species of 1.34×10-4 (standard error of the mean=0.17×10-4) W g-1 dry weight of tissue at 20°C and 2.10×10-4 (SE=0.20×10-4) W g-1 at 30°C] signify a temperature coefficient (Q10) of 1.56 between 20° and 30°C, or partial temperature acclimation. Subtracting heat production as a result of physical activity, i.e., considering only resting metabolism, the corresponding means and standard errors of the means are 1.24×10-4 and 0.14×10-4 W g-1 at 20°C and 1.91×10-4 and 0.077×10-4 W g-1 at 30°C. Anaerobic heat production rate at 20°C is proportional to body size (r=0.84, 9 degrees of freedom, DF). ForM. demissus, measured anaerobic heat production is on the order of 7.5% of the level of aerobic respiration reported in the literature.  相似文献

In Ireland, mussels on exposed rocky shores constitute an interbreeding mixture of two forms of mussels, the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, and the Mediterranean mussel, M. galloprovincialis. Results from an Irish study in the 1980s, using partially diagnostic allozyme markers, indicated that mussels higher up the shore were more galloprovincialis-like than those lower down. In this study we set out to test two hypotheses: (a) recruits arriving on the shore are composed of genetically distinct cohorts that settle preferentially at different levels on the shore, and maintain genetic distinctiveness into adulthood; (b) recruits are genetically homogeneous, but once settled they diverge genetically over time, due to within-habitat site specific-selection. The diagnostic Me 15/16 DNA marker was used to analyse the genetic composition of newly-settled spat recruiting to artificial substrates, which were placed at two-week intervals from May–October 2002, on the mid- and low shore areas of two exposed sites in Galway Bay. Adult mussels were also collected on each sampling date. Results did not support the preferential settlement hypothesis, i.e., the genetic composition of primary settlers (≤ 500 μm) was similar between tidal heights and shores. Neither was there evidence of post settlement selective mortality, as adults were genetically similar to settling spat. In spat and adults the frequency of the M. galloprovincialis allele was high (0.56–0.80), due to high frequencies of M. galloprovincialis (> 37%) and hybrid (> 33%) genotypes, and correspondingly low frequencies of the M. edulis genotype (< 11%). Adult mussels from a nearby sheltered estuarine site, while significantly different to exposed shore mussels, still had low frequencies of the M. edulis genotype (< 17%), indicating no apparent advantage for the genotype in this environment. There are indications that the genetic composition of mussels may be changing on the Atlantic coasts of Ireland.  相似文献

The heart beat, ventilation rate and oxygen uptake of Mytilus edulis L. were measured simultaneously, in response to changes in temperature and food level. There was no thermal acclimation of heart-beat frequency or amplitude to temperatures from 5° to 25°C. Oxygen consumption and ventilation rate acclimated to 10°, 15° and 20°C, but not to 25°C. Starvation reduced the rate of oxygen uptake and heart-beat frequency to a standard level and, in response to food, the ventilation rate and oxygen consumption immediately increased to an active level. Feeding was maintained after the initiation of active metabolism, and during the following 10 days the heart-beat frequency gradually increased to the level characteristic of fed individuals. There was no direct correlation between the rate of oxygen consumption and heart rate, and an apparent absence of a close nervous coupling between ventilation rate and heart rate in M. edulis.  相似文献

We examined natural selection within a population of marine mussels, sampled in southwestern England in June 1991, containing a high frequency of hybrids between Mytilus edulis L. and M. galloprovincialis Lmk. This system is particularly tractable for the assessment of natural selection because hybridization is common and individual mussels can be aged, allowing changes in the frequency of hybrid genotypes among age classes to be determined. We show that strong viability selection occurs among hybrid genotypes which results in the virtual elimination of M. edulis–like genotypes from the population over a period of 3 years. Recombinant hybrid genotypes are intermediate in fitness, with M. edulis–like genotypes having a lower survival rate and M. galloprovincialis–like genotypes having a higher survival rate than genotypes of mixed ancestry. Since intermediate fitness for hybrid genotypes is inconsistent with endogenous selection models we conclude that the structure and position of this hybrid zone is probably generated by exogenous selection. This pattern of selection is a recurring feature of this hybrid population and likely occurs elsewhere in the hybrid zone. Selection against M. edulis–like genotypes appears to be offset by extensive immigration of larvae dispersed from pure populations of M. edulis. Many marine species, including mussels in the Mytilus edulis species group (i.e. M. edulis L., M. galloprovincialis Lamarck, and M. trossulus Gould), have an antitropical distribution pattern, with closely related taxa occurring in high latitudes of the northern and southern hemispheres but being absent from the tropics. We tested four hypotheses to explain the timing and route of transequatorial migration by species with antitropical distributions. These hypotheses yield different predictions for the phylogenetic relationship of southern hemisphere taxa relative to their northern counter-parts. The three Mytilus species were used to test these hypotheses since they exhibit a typical antitropical distribution and representative taxa occur in both the Pacific and Atlantic. Two types of mtDNA lineages were found among populations of mussels collected from the southern hemisphere between 1988 and 1996; over 90% of the mtDNA lineages formed a distinct subclade which, on average, had 1.4% divergence from haplotypes found exclusively in northern Atlantic populations of M. galloprovincialis. These data indicate that southern hemisphere mussels arose from a migration event from the northern hemisphere during the Pleistocene via an Atlantic route. The remainder of the southern hemisphere lineages (<10%) were very closely related to mtDNA haplotypes found in both M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis in the northern hemisphere, suggesting a second, more recent migration to the southern hemisphere.
