A karyological study ofTrachurus trachurus andT. mediterraneus (Perciformes: Carangidae) was conducted by standard, fluorochrome staining (CMA3, mithramycin, quinacrine mustard, DAPI), C-, Ag-NOR, and Alu-I banding methods. The karyotypes of both species consisted of 2n = 48 chromosomes, but of different FN:T. trachurus possessed a chromosome complement of 2 metacentric and 46 acrocentric elements, fundamental number (FN) = 50 andT. mediterraneus, a chromosome complement of 4 metacentric, 4 submetacentric, 14 subtelocentric and 26 acrocentric chromosomes, FN = 70. In neither of the two taxa investigated were heteromorphic sex chromosomes observed. The nucleolar organizer region was interstitially located on the long arm of the Ist pair of chromosomes in both species, intermediate inT. mediterraneus and subterminal inT. trachurus. Constitutive heterochromatin was found in nearly all centromeric and telomeric regions inT. trachurus; inT. mediterraneus it formed less intense telomeric and centromeric bands and thin interstitial bands on eight chromosome pairs. In addition, the C-positive material reacted differently to the digestion with endonuclease Alu-l in the two species. The results are discussed and compared with karyological data known for other species of Carangidae.  相似文献

A cytogenetic analysis by several staining techniques was carried out on Oedalechilus labeo specimens from the west coast of Italy, in order to extend the karyological knowledge on Mediterranean mullets. The karyotype of the species is composed of 46 acrocentric and 2 subtelocentric chromosomes. Constitutive heterochromatin was found to be restricted to the centromeres. Fluorochrome staining revealed a uniform base composition along the chromosome arms. Nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) are located on the short arms of chromosome pair 9 and can be either homomorphic or quite heteromorphic in size. In some specimens chromomycin A3-staining and fluorescence in situ hybridization with 18S rDNA revealed a third additional and inactive NOR on the short arms of a medium-sized chromosome. This is the first report of NOR variability in Mugilidae, a family generally characterized by a quite conservative karyotype. Heterochromatin composition and NOR location differentiate O. labeo from a cytotaxonomical point of view from the Liza species studied, Liza being considered the genus from which the genus Oedalechilus derived. The alien mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis invaded sand banks in Langebaan Lagoon on the west coast of South Africa in the mid-1990s. However, by 2001 these beds had completely died off, with only empty shells and anoxic sand remaining. In an effort to prevent the re-settlement of this aggressive invader, all dead mussel shells were then cleared. This study considered the impacts of the invasion and subsequent die-off on natural benthic communities. Community composition differed significantly between non-invaded and invaded areas (ANOSIM, R = 0.685 and P < 0.01) as the physical presence of mussel beds created a new habitat that promoted invasion by indigenous rocky-shore species. This dramatically increased faunal biomass from 1,132.9 g m−2 ± 3,454.7 SD to 53,262.4 g m−2 ± 23,052.6 SD and species richness from 38 to 49 species. Following the die-off of the mussel beds, communities remained significantly different between non-invaded areas and those in which mussel shells remained (ANOSIM, R = 0.663 and P < 0.01). Species richness was significantly greater in non-invaded areas (18 species) than in uncleared areas with remnant shells (four species) (Kruskal–Wallis ANOVA H 2,36 = 10.8964 and P = 0.032), as the previously dominant rocky-shore species became smothered by sediment and the compacted shells formed an impermeable layer excluding sandy-shore burrowing organisms. After the shells were cleared, 50% of the sandy-shore species associated with non-invaded areas returned within 5 months, but community structure still remained significantly different to non-invaded areas (ANOSIM, R = 0.235 and P > 0.05). Invasion thus dramatically altered natural communities and although the subsequent removal of the dead mussel shells appears to have aided recovery, community composition remained different from the pre-invasion state after 5 months.  相似文献

Interference competition for limited habitat or refuges is known to produce density-dependent mortality and generate patterns of micro-habitat distribution. While in mobile species the outcome of interference at a local scale can usually be determined from differences in body size and behavior, the population-level consequences of such interactions vary depending on rates of settlement and recruitment at a site, which are not directly correlated to local reproductive success. Previous experimental studies in central Chile demonstrated that interference competition for refuges is the primary factor driving microhabitat segregation between the predatory crabs Acanthocyclus gayi and Acanthocyclus hassleri, with the latter species monopolizing galleries inside mussel beds and excluding A. gayi to rock crevices. Between April 2001 and March 2006 we quantified monthly recruitment rates in artificial collectors at 17 sites over 900 km of the central coast of Chile. Results show that recruitment rates of A. hassleri are almost two orders of magnitude lower than those of A. gayi, and that they are tightly and positively correlated among sites across the region, suggesting that at scales of kilometers larval stages of these species are affected by similar oceanographic processes. Total crab densities per site were also positively correlated between species and strongly associated to mussel cover, with overall low crab densities at all sites where mussel cover was lower than about 60%. At all sites with mussel cover >60%, the ratio of A. gayi to A. hassleri density progressively decreased from recruits (2.6) to juveniles (0.5) to adults (0.04), overcoming initial differences in recruitment rates. The relative success of the inferior competitor at sites with low mussel cover does not appear to provide a potential mechanism favoring regional coexistence through dispersal to other sites (“mass effects”), because their densities were lower than at sites of high mussel cover. Yet, at many sites of low mussel cover the dominant competitor is virtually absent, allowing A. gayi to attain larger population sizes at the scale of the region. Thus, the factors limiting the dominant competitor from successfully utilizing other microhabitats seem to be the most critical factor in promoting both local and regional coexistence between these species.  相似文献

Settlement is a major determinant of intertidal populations. However, the energy costs of lost larvae are very high. Accordingly, arrival and attachment on suitable substrata are essential requirements for species’ survival. On the intertidal, the presence of cues left by adult or juvenile conspecifics could be vital for the successful establishment of larvae arriving on the shore. Two mussel species, the indigenous Perna perna and the invasive Mytilus galloprovincialis, co-occur on the lower eulittoral zone on the south coast of South Africa. P. perna dominates the low and M. galloprovincialis the high mussel zones, with co-existence in the mid mussel zone. This study tested the hypothesis of settlement selectivity for conspecifics in these two mussel species, to understand whether the final adult distribution of mussels on the shores is determined by active behavioural and chemical mechanisms. Preferential selection by larvae for conspecifics was tested in the field during the peak settlement period in 2004 in natural mussel beds across zones and through manipulative experiments in the mid-zone where the species co-exist. On natural beds, settlement was determined by counts of settlers attached over 48 h onto artificial collectors. Collectors were placed on beds of P. perna and M. galloprovincialis present at both high- and low-adult densities, as well as in mixed beds. On such natural beds, settlers of both species consistently favored low-zone P. perna beds. Settlement patterns over 24 h onto experimentally created mussel patches consisting of P. perna, M. galloprovincialis or the two species combined beds, set in the mixed zone, did not conform with the results of the natural beds study: settlers of both species settled with no discrimination among different patches. The results indicate that mussels, which are sedentary, lack attraction to conspecifics at settlement. This highlights the importance of tidal height in setting settlement rates, and of post-settlement events in shaping populations of these broadcast spawners.  相似文献

Habitat-forming, ecosystem engineer species are common in most marine systems. Still, much uncertainty exists about how individual and population-level traits of these species contribute to ecosystem processes and how engineering species jointly affect biodiversity. In this manipulative field experiment, we examined how biodiversity in marginal blue mussel beds is affected by blue mussel (1) body size, density and patch context and (2) presence of fucoid and algal structures. In the study area, bladder-wrack (Fucus vesiculosus), filamentous algae and blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) coexist at shallow depths in a variety of patch configurations and offer complex habitats with a high variability of resources. We hypothesized that complexity in terms of mussel bed structure and algal presence determines species composition and abundance. Results from the experiment were compared with macrofaunal communities found in natural populations of both engineering species. Results show that the physical structure and blue mussel patch context are important determinants for species composition and abundance. Results further show that the presence of algal structures positively affects diversity in blue mussel habitats due to increased surface availability and complexity that these algae offer. This study shows that blue mussel beds at the very margin of their distribution have an indisputable function for promoting and maintaining biodiversity and suggest that facilitative effects of habitat-modifying species are important on Baltic Sea rocky shores with fundamental importance to community structure.  相似文献

The ability of a mussel to withstand wave-generated hydrodynamic stress depends mainly on its byssal attachment strength. This study investigated causes and consequences of different attachment strengths of the two dominant mussels species on the South African south coast, the invasive Mytilus galloprovincialis and the indigenous Perna perna, which dominate the upper and the lower areas of the lower balanoid zone, respectively and co-exist in the middle area. Attachment strength of P. perna was significantly higher than that of M. galloprovincialis. Likewise solitary mussels were more strongly attached than mussels living within mussel beds (bed mussels), and in both cases this can be explained by more and thicker byssal threads. Having a wider shell, M. galloprovincialis is also subjected to higher hydrodynamic loads than P. perna. Attachment strength of both species increased from higher to lower shore, in response to a gradient of stronger wave action. The morphological features of the invasive species and its higher mortality rates during winter storms help to explain the exclusion of M. galloprovincialis from the low shore. The results are discussed in the context of the evolutionary strategy of the alien mussel, which directs most of its energy to fast growth and high reproductive output, apparently at the cost of reduced attachment strength. This raises the prediction that its invasive impact will be more pronounced at sites subject to strong but not extreme wave action.  相似文献

A cytogenetic analysis by several staining techniques was carried out on specimens of Seriola dumerili from the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily. The karyotype was found to be composed of 48 chromosomes in all the specimens examined. All chromosomes are subtelo- and acrocentrics, except for one pair of small-sized submetacentric chromosomes. After Ag-staining, nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) can be observed on the short arms of a medium-sized subtelocentric chromosome pair, and after chromomycin A3-staining a bright fluorescent signal is evident at the same sites. The 18S rDNA mapping by fluorescence in situ hybridization confirms this unique NOR location. The constitutive heterochromatin is mainly restricted to centromeres and the fluorochrome-staining by chromomycin A3 and 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole revealed a uniform base composition along the chromosomal arms; therefore stock/population-specific marker chromosomes cannot be identified. Such cytogenetic features, however, rule out the presence of morphologically differentiated sex-chromosomes in the greater amberjack. Received: 16 January 1997 / Accepted: 31 January 1997  相似文献

The ability of an invasive species to spread in a new locality depends on its interaction with the indigenous community and on variation in time and space in the environment. The Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis invaded the South African coast 30 years ago and it now competes and coexists with the indigenous mussel Perna perna. The two species show different tolerances to wave and sand stress, two of the main environmental factors affecting this intertidal community. P. perna is more resistant to hydrodynamic stress than M. galloprovincialis, while the invasive species is less vulnerable to sand action. Our results show that mortality rates of the two species over a period of 6 months had different timing. The indigenous species had higher mortality than M. galloprovincialis during periods of high sand accumulation in mussel beds, while the pattern reversed during winter, when wave action was high. A negative correlation between sand accumulation and attachment strength of the two mussels showed that sand not only affects mussel mortality through scouring and burial, but also weakens their attachment strength, subjecting them to a higher risk of dislodgement. Here we underline the importance of variations in time and space of environmental stress in regulating the interaction between invasive and indigenous species, and how these variations can create new competitive balances.  相似文献

The logarithm of stamina for each of Sardinops sagax (4 to 6 600 s), Scomber japonicus peruanus (16 to 27 000 s) and Odontestes regia (7 to 9 900 s), adjusted to a length of 10 cm, decreased linearly over swimming speeds of 31 to 82, 25 to 78 and 24 to 75 cm s-1, respectively (19°C). The regression coefficient was -0.064 for both S. j. peruanus and O. regia and -0.049 for S. sagax. Critical swimming speed (60 min, 5 cm s-1) for S. sagax (10cm), 32 cm s-1, is within the range found for other species of similar length. The suggestion of a change in regression coefficient as swimming speed increased from prolonged to burst (Brett, 1964) was not supported by the results of this study.  相似文献

Mussel bed community structure of two intertidal mytilids, Septifer virgatus (Wiegmann) and Hormomya mutabilis (Gould), whose beds were contiguous vertically on a rocky intertidal shore (Wakayama Prefecture, Japan), was compared between 1982 and 1983. In the upper S. virgatus bed, crustaceans and bivalves were dominant in terms of both number of individuals and biomass. There were three barnacle species representative of the epizoans, two isopods and one amphipod as mobile fauna, and two bivalves as infauna. The lower H. mutabilis bed supported virtually no epizoans or mobile fauna. Infaunal free-ranging polychaetes and sipunculids were dominant in terms of both number of individuals and biomass. The H. mutabilis bed contained a much greater amount of sediment than did the S. virgatus bed, and the interstices among individual H. mutabilis and among their byssal threads were filled with sediment. The biomass of six of nine species dominant in the S. virgatus bed was negatively correlated with the amount of sediment. Recruitment of these faunal assemblages into artificial mussel clumps was examined in mussel enclosure experiments, and a negative sediment effect in H. mutabilis clumps was detected for one isopod and one limpet species. Factors causing the differences between two mussel bed communities are discussed, focusing on the effects of sediment.  相似文献

A karyotypic analysis was carried out in turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) using conventional banding techniques, fluorochromes and restriction endonucleasebanding. The standard karyotype of turbot is 2n=44 chromosomes, with 48 chromosome arms. Nucleolar organizer regions, which were localized in the short arm of Chromosome Pair No. 3, showed C-and chromomycin A3-positive staining. C-bands were mainly located at the centromeres, but were also present in some interstitial and telomeric locations. No differences were revealed among constitutive heterochromatin bands after treatment of fixed chromosomes with fluorochrome staining and restriction endonucleases. Digestion with DdeI restriction enzyme produced a pattern of interstitial banding which suggested some degree of differentiation along the chromosome arms in turbot. Neither variation in chromosome number of arm number nor polymorphism in nucleolar organizer regions was revealed in the turbot analyzed.  相似文献

Role of mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress has been well documented in various cognitive-related disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Evidence indicates that Aß formation impairs mitochondrial function and that mitochondrial dysfunction is an early event in the pathogenesis of AD. The present study was, therefore, designed to investigate the direct toxicity of Aß peptide on isolated mitochondria obtained from rat brain. Various mitochondrial toxicity/integrity parameters such as succinate dehydrogenase activity, reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, mitochondrial membrane potential collapse (MMP), mitochondrial swelling, and cytochrome c release were measured following the addition of Aß peptide on isolated mitochondria and then, mitoprotective effect of aqueous extracts of Mangifera indica and Juglans regia against mitochondrial toxicity endpoints parameters induced by Aß peptide were assessed. Our results showed that exposure to Aß peptide (30 nM) in isolated brain mitochondria induced mitochondrial ROS formation, MMP collapse, mitochondrial swelling, and cytochrome c release which is the starting point of apoptosis signaling. All these mitochondrial toxic endpoints induced by Aß peptide inhibited by aqueous extracts of Mangifera indica (100–400 µg/ml) and Juglans regia (200–400 µg/ml). To our knowledge, this is one of the first apparent studies to claim directly targeting of brain mitochondria and induction of apoptosis by Aß peptide as a new hypothesis for etiology of AD and other related neurodegenerative diseases as well as mitopreventive role of common antioxidant nutritional products including walnut and mango.  相似文献

Three different karyomorphs with 2n=46, 2n=44 and 2n=42 for Capros aper (L., 1758) (Zeiformes) collected from the Gulf of Lion, near Banyuls-sur-Mer, France, in July 1990 were determined. Karyomorphs were characterized by the same arm number [Fundamental number (FN)=50], suggesting that chromosome variations are due to Robertsonian fusions. In somatic metaphase spreads stained with silver nitrate, nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) consistently occupied a terminal position on the short arms of two small submetacentric chromosomes. Ca. 30% of silver-stained metaphases in each specimen showed NOR chromosomes associated in pairs by their nucleolus organizer regions.  相似文献

Two species of marine mussel, Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis hybridize on the coasts of western Europe. Studies of hybrid mussel populations have shown that natural selection favors M. galloprovincialis-like genotypes within this hybrid zone. Many hypotheses have been proposed to explain differential mortality in these populations. This study tests two hypotheses addressing factors of mortality in a population, and describes yearly energy storage and reproductive cycles of these two species and their hybrids. No evidence was found that the two taxa have different overall levels of reproductive effort or parasite infestation. They do, however, have asynchronous spawning periods and divergent energy storage strategies. In the year of this study, 1993, the M. edulis genotypic class spawned as a group in June and July. After spawning, they built up a high level of mantle energy-storage tissues that are probably used for gametogenesis in the following winter and spring. The M. galloprovincialis genotypic group, however, spawned asynchronously, beginning in June and finishing by August, and did not build up high levels of energy-storage tissues in summer. These results add a temporal component to the interpretation of selective forces acting to shape this hybrid zone. Vulnerability of each species to mortality factors may differ because of their divergent reproductive and energy-storage cycles. Received: 15 January 1999 / Accepted: 26 July 2000  相似文献

The mussels Mytilus edulis L. and M. trossulus Gould are found sympatrically in most areas of Newfoundland, with a low frequency of hybrids. To assess the potential for reproductive isolation, we sampled mussels from three sites in an eastern Newfoundland Bay from May–October 1996 to determine if there were differences in the reproductive cycles of the two species and their natural hybrids. In mussels with sheil lengths of 38–42 mm, males and females with mature gametes were dominant in June for M. edulis and hybrids, while M. trossulus showed a lower frequency of individuals with mature gametes. M. trossulus and hybrids spawned over a prolonged period (from late spring to early autumn) compared with most M. edulis individuals that spawned over a period of 2–3 weeks in July. This asynchrony in spawning activity between the two species may partially explain the low frequency of hybrids found in previous studies of these mussel populations. Female and male hybrids between M. edulis and M. trossulus showed normal gonad development, ripening and spawning, providing an opportunity for the introgression of genes between the two species. M. trossulus had a higher reproductive output than M. edulis of similar shell length, while hybrids showed intermediate values of reproductive output. M. trossulus females produced smaller eggs than either M. edulis or hybrids. Differences in reproductive traits may partially explain the maintenance of the mussel hybrid zone in Newfoundland. Two modal diploid numbers of chromosomes were found for Pterotraches hippocampus Philippi (Mollusca: Mesogastropoda) collected from the Gulf of Palermo in 1990: 2n=31 and 32 for males and females, respectively. This, along with other karyological characteristics such as the occurrence of a trivalent configuration at diakinesis and two types of metaphase-II spreads in spermatocytes, supports the notion that a X1X2Y/X1X1X2X2 sex mechanism operates in the species investigated here. Silver nitrate procedure revealed an intraindividual variation in the Ag-staining pattern occurring in this species. The majority of the chromosome pair displayed terminal and/or interstitial heterochromatic blocks after C-banding.  相似文献

Comparisons between invertebrate communities hosted by similar foundation species under different environmental conditions permit identification of patterns of species distributions that might be characteristic of the different ecosystems. Similarities and differences in community structure between two major types of chemosynthetic ecosystems were assessed by analyzing samples of invertebrates associated with Bathymodiolus heckerae Gustafson et al. mussel beds at the Florida Escarpment seep (Gulf of Mexico, 26°01.8N; 84°54.9W; October 2000) and B. puteoserpentis von Cosel et al. mussel beds at the Snake Pit vent (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 23°22.1N; 44°56.9W; July 2001). Macrofaunal species richness was nearly twice as high in the seep mussel bed compared to the vent mussel bed, and only a single morphospecies, the ophiuroid Ophioctenella acies Tyler et al., was shared between the sites. Similarities between the two faunas at higher taxonomic levels (genus and family) were evident for only a small percentage of the total number of taxa, suggesting that evolutionary histories of many of these seep and vent macrofaunal taxa are not shared. The taxonomic distinctiveness of the seep and vent mussel-bed macrofaunal communities supports the hypothesis that environmental and oceanographic barriers prevent most taxa from occupying both types of habitats. Macrofaunal community heterogeneity among samples was similar in seep and vent mussel beds, indicating that spatial scales of processes regulating community variability may be similar in the two types of ecosystems. Suspension feeders were not represented in the macrofauna of seep or vent mussel beds. Primary consumers (deposit feeders and grazers) contributed more to the total abundance of macrofauna of seep mussel beds than vent mussel beds; secondary consumers (polychaetes and shrimp) were more abundant in the vent mussel beds.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available in the online version of this article at http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00227-004-1304-z.Communicated by J.P. Undescribed hydrocarbon-seep mussels were collected from the Louisiana Slope, Gulf of Mexico, during March 1986, and the ultrastructure of their gills was examined and compared to Bathymodiolus thermophilus, a mussel collected from the deep-sea hydrothermal vents on the Galápagos Rift in March 1985. These closely related mytilids both contain abundant symbiotic bacteria in their gills. However, the bacteria from the two species are distinctly different in both morphology and biochemistry, and are housed differently within the gills of the two mussels. The symbionts from the seep mussel are larger than the symbionts from B. thermophilus and, unlike the latter, contain stacked intracytoplasmic membranes. In the seep mussel three or fewer symbionts appear to be contained in each host-cell vacuole, while in B. thermophilus there are often more than twenty bacteria visible in a single section through a vacuole. The methanotrophic nature of the seep-mussel symbionts was confirmed in 14C-methane uptake experiments by the appearance of label in both CO2 and acid-stable, non-volatile, organic compounds after a 3 h incubation of isolated gill tissue. Furthermore, methane consumption was correlated with methanol dehydrogenase activity in isolated gill tissue. Activity of ribulose-1,5-biphosphate (RuBP) carboxylase and 14CO2 assimilation studies indicate the presence of either a second type of symbiont or contaminating bacteria on the gills of freshly captured seep mussels. A reevaluation of the nutrition of the symbionts in B. thermophilus indicates that while the major symbiont is not a methanotroph, its status as a sulfur-oxidizing chemoautotroph, as has been suggested previously, is far from proven.  相似文献

Two species of blue mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis and M. trossulus, co-occur and hybridize along the Pacific coast of North America. Using a set of polymerase chain-reaction (PCR)-based genetic markers which diagnostically identify these species, we show that they are sympatric from the Cape Mendocino region to the Monterey Peninsula in northern and central California, USA. Mussels with hybrid genotypes were detected in all populations sampled in the region of sympatry, and the frequency of hybrid genotypes in individual hybrid populations ranged from 13 to 44%. Significant frequencies of first-generation backcross genotypes were detected in two individual hybrid zone populations (Berkeley and Monterey Marina) and in the hybrid zone as a whole, indicating that the potential exists for introgression between M. galloprovincialis and M. trossulus. Despite this potential, we found no evidence of advanced introgression beyond first-generation backcrosses, suggesting that gene flow between M. galloprovincialis and M. trossulus has been quite limited. The frequency of mussels with M. trossulus and hybrid genotypes declined abruptly south of Monterey Peninsula, while the frequency of mussels with M. galloprovincialis and hybrid genotypes declined precipitously north of Cape Mendocino. These abrupt genetic discontinuities indicate that this blue mussel hybrid zone is presently positioned between two prominent coastal features and there is little, if any, export of alleles from the hybrid zone into bordering parental populations.
