This study quantifies the manner in which Australian fur seals, Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus, use their prey in a spatial and temporal context. We analysed 977 scat and 66 regurgitate samples collected from Tasmanian breeding colonies and haul-outs between 1994 and 2000. Diagnostic prey remains identified in the scats represented 35 fish taxa and 8 cephalopod taxa. The main taxa identified in scats, where frequency of occurrence was 10%, were leatherjacket species (family Monocanthidae), redbait (Emmelichthys nitidus), barracouta (Thyrsites atun), jack mackerel (Trachurus declivis) and red cod (Pseudophysis bachus). Regurgitates were dominated by cephalopods, primarily Goulds squid (Nototodarus gouldi), Octopus maorum, O. berrima/pallidus and Sepia apama. Discriminant function analyses indicated that there were generally no significant differences in the composition of the diet between colonies within a year, suggesting that prey distribution is fairly uniform throughout Bass Strait at those time scales. The diet at breeding colonies, however, exhibited significant inter- and intra-annual variation, determined by the presence of several key taxa, such as barracouta and a species of scorpionfish (family Scorpaenidae). The diet composition also varied regionally, between Bass Strait and southern Tasmania in spring 1999 and autumn 2000, with redbait, barracouta and a species of scorpionfish identified as the main taxa contributing to this difference. New Zealand sea lions (Phocarctos hookeri) are threatened by incidental bycatch in the trawl fishery for southern arrow squid (Nototodarus sloanii). An overlap between the fishery and foraging sea lions has previously been interpreted as one piece of evidence supporting resource competition for squid. However, there is currently no consensus about the importance of squid in the diet of New Zealand sea lions. Therefore, we investigated this importance independently of spatial and temporal differences in squid availability through a simultaneous study with sympatric New Zealand fur seals (Arctocephalus forsteri), a species known to target arrow squid. Diet sampling at The Snares (48°01′S 166°32′E), subantarctic New Zealand, in February 2012 coincided with peak annual catch in the nearby squid fishery. Diets were deduced by analyses of diagnostic prey remains from scats (faeces) and casts (regurgitations). The contribution of each prey species to the diet was quantified using the per cent index of relative importance (% IRI) that combined frequency of occurrence, mass and number of prey items. Arrow squid was a minor component in sea lion scats (2 % IRI), and none was found in their casts. In contrast, arrow squid was the major component in fur seal scats and casts (93 and 99 % IRI, respectively). This study found that New Zealand sea lions ate minimal squid at a time when squid was clearly available as evidenced by the diet of New Zealand fur seals; hence, there was no indication of resource competition between sea lions and the squid fishery. 相似文献

The diet of king penguins, Aptenodytes patagonicus, rearing chicks was studied during three consecutive austral winters (1990, 1991 and 1992) at Crozet Islands. The mean stomach content mass of the 47 samples was 503 g. Percentages of wet and reconstituted masses showed that both fishes (66 and 36%, respectively) and squid (34 and 64%) are important components of the winter diet. Juveniles of the demersal onychoteuthid squid Moroteuthis ingens form the bulk of the cephalopod diet, and this was the main prey by reconstituted mass (57%). Myctophid fish (lantern-fishes) accounted for most of the fish diet, constituting together 32% by mass. The three main species of myctophids eaten in summer by king penguins were either very rare in winter (Electrona carlsbergi) or accounted for a smaller proportion of the diet (Krefftichthys anderssoni = 1.5% by mass and Protomyctophum tenisoni = 4.6%). Five other myctophids, which are rarely consumed in summer, contributed 24% of the diet by mass in winter (Gymnoscopelus piabilis = 18.1%, Lampichthys procerus = 2.4%, G. nicholsi = 1.3%, and Metelectrona ventralis and Electrona subaspera = 1.0%). The greater diversity of prey in winter suggests a more opportunistic feeding behaviour at a time probably marked by a change in prey availability. Both the known ecology of the fish and squid prey and the barely digested state of some items suggest that in winter breeding adults forage in the outer shelf, upper slope and oceanic areas in the close vicinity of the Crozet Islands to feed their chicks. Finally, using king penguins as biological samplers, the present work provides novel data on the previously unstudied mesopelagic/epibenthic marine community in waters surrounding the Crozet Islands. Seventeen myctophid fish have been identified to species level. These include several poorly known species in the southern Indian Ocean. The occurrence of small, nearly intact, cephalopods in the diet of king penguins suggests that spawning grounds of four squid species may be located near the Crozet Archipelago. 相似文献

Trophic relations of the cephalopod Martialia hyadesi (Teuthoidea: Ommastrephidae) at the Antarctic Polar Front,Scotia Sea 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Samples of the squid Martialia hyadesi were collected aboard two Japanese squid-jigging vessels carrying out commercial fishing trials at the Antarctic Polar Frontal Zone, north Scotia Sea, in February 1989. The dissected stomachs of 61 specimens were classified according to fullness and the contents were examined visually. Identifiable food items included fish sagittal otoliths, crustacean eyes, the lappets on euphausiid first antennule segments and cephalopod sucker rings. The most frequent items in the squid's diet were the myctophid fishes Krefftichthys anderssoni and Electrona carlsbergi, the euphausiid Euphausia superba and a hyperiid amphipod, probably Themisto gaudichaudi. A small proportion of the sample had been feeding cannibalistically. Total lengths of the fish prey were estimated from sagittal otolith size using published relationships. All fish were relatively small; 7 to 35% of squid mantle-length. However, it is possible that some heads of larger fish are discarded by the squid and so are not represented by otoliths in the stomach contents. Over the size range of squid in the sample there was no relationship between size of fish prey and size of squid. Similarly, when the squid sample was divided into groups according to prey categories: crustaceans, crustaceans+fish, fish, cephalopod, there was no evidence that dietary preference was related to squid size. The prevalence of copepod-feeding myctophids in the diet of this squid, which is itself a major prey item of some higher predators in the Scotia Sea, suggests that a previously unrecognised food chain: copepod-myctophid-M. hyadesi-higher predator, may be an important component of the Antarctic oceanic ecosystem. 相似文献

Southern elephant seals are important apex predators in a highly variable and unpredictable marine environment. In the presence
of resource limitation, foraging behaviours evolve to reduce intra-specific competition increasing a species’ overall probability
of successful foraging. We examined the diet of 141 (aged 1–3 years) juvenile southern elephant seals to test the hypotheses
that differences between ages, sexes and seasons in diet structure occur. We described prey species composition for common
squid and fish species and the mean size of cephalopod prey items for these age groups. Three cephalopod species dominated
the stomach samples, Alluroteuthis antarcticus, Histioteuthis eltaninae and Slosarczykovia circumantarcticus. We found age-related differences in both species composition and size of larger prey species that probably relate to ontogenetic
changes in diving ability and haul-out behaviour and prey availability. These changes in foraging behaviour and diet are hypothesised
to reduce intra-specific food competition concomitant with the increase in foraging niche of growing juveniles. 相似文献

The Wadden Sea is an important habitat for harbour seals and grey seals. They regularly haul-out on sandbanks and islands
along the coast. Comparably little is known about the time seals spend at sea and how they use the remainder of the North
Sea. Yet, human activity in offshore waters is increasing and information on seal distribution in the North Sea is crucial
for conservation and management. Aerial line transect surveys were conducted in the German bight from 2002 to 2007 to investigate
the distribution and abundance of marine mammals. Distance sampling methodology was combined with density surface modelling
for a spatially explicit analysis of seal distribution in the German North Sea. Depth and distance to coast were found to
be relevant predictor variables for seal density. Density surface modelling allowed for a depiction of seal distribution in
the study area as well as an abundance estimate. This is the first study to use aerial survey data to develop a density surface
model (DSM) for a spatially explicit distribution estimate of seals at sea.

In diet analyses of seabirds, fatty acid signatures (FAS) can be used to overcome biases due to differential digestion of
prey and enable the analysis of very digested diet samples. We applied FAS analysis to stomach contents of a small sub-Antarctic
seabird, the Thin-billed Prion Pachyptila belcheri, which feeds mainly on squid during incubation and on crustacea during chick rearing. This seasonal dietary switch of Thin-billed
prions was reflected in differences in FAS in regurgitates, as were inter-annual differences in diet composition. A discriminant
function analysis correctly classified 93.4% of cases with respect to year (2006–2008) and stage of the breeding cycle (incubation
versus chick rearing). The dominant types of crustacea in the diet of Thin-billed prions (amphipods Themisto gaudichaudii, euphausiids, decapods Munida gregaria, and calanoid copepods) were distinguished well by characteristic FAS patterns. However, the FAS of the two main types of
prey by volume, amphipods T. gaudichaudii and squid Gonatus antarcticus, were similar to each other. Although FAS were successfully applied in the analysis of prey in stomach contents of prions,
FAS of some prey species were similar and may not be distinguishable from each other if used in quantitative diet analyses. 相似文献

Surface “swarms” of the swimming crabs Charybdis smithii are still considered as an unusual phenomenon in the open Indian Ocean, although their dense pelagic aggregations were already
reported in waters off the Indian coast and in the northern Arabian Sea. Based on an extensive large-scale data series taken
over 45 years, we demonstrate that C. smithii is common in the pelagic provinces of the western Indian Ocean driven by the wind monsoon regime. Swimming crabs are dispersed
by the monsoon currents throughout the equatorial Indian Ocean. They aggregate at night in the upper 150-m layer, where their
estimated biomass derived from pelagic trawling data can exceed 130 kg km−2. Abundance of C. smithii can reach >15,000 ind. km−2 in July (i.e. the peak of the south-west monsoon), declines by 50-fold in March and is negligible in May. C. smithii is an important prey for more than 30 species of abundant epipelagic top predators. In turn, it feeds on mesopelagic species.
This swimming crab is a major species of the intermediate trophic levels and represents a crucial seasonal trophic link in
the open ocean ecosystem of the western Indian Ocean. Outbursts in pelagic waters of huge biomasses of ordinarily benthic
crustaceans (C. smithii and Natosquilla investigatoris) are a remarkable feature of the Indian Ocean, although similar, but smaller, events are reported in the Pacific and Atlantic
Oceans.

The influence of multiple anchored fish aggregating devices (FADs) on the spatial behavior of yellowfin (Thunnus albacares) and bigeye tuna (T. obesus) was investigated by equipping all thirteen FADs surrounding the island of Oahu (HI, USA) with automated sonic receivers
(“listening stations”) and intra-peritoneally implanting individually coded acoustic transmitters in 45 yellowfin and 12 bigeye
tuna. Thus, the FAD network became a multi-element passive observatory of the residence and movement characteristics of tuna
within the array. Yellowfin tuna were detected within the FAD array for up to 150 days, while bigeye tuna were only observed
up to a maximum of 10 days after tagging. Only eight yellowfin tuna (out of 45) and one bigeye tuna (out of 12) visited FADs
other than their FAD of release. Those nine fish tended to visit nearest neighboring FADs and, in general, spent more time
at their FAD of release than at the others. Fish visiting the same FAD several times or visiting other FADs tended to stay
longer in the FAD network. A majority of tagged fish exhibited some synchronicity when departing the FADs but not all tagged
fish departed a FAD at the same time: small groups of tagged fish left together while others remained. We hypothesize that
tuna (at an individual or collective level) consider local conditions around any given FAD to be representative of the environment
on a larger scale (e.g., the entire island) and when those conditions become unfavorable the tuna move to a completely different
area. Thus, while the anchored FADs surrounding the island of Oahu might concentrate fish and make them more vulnerable to
fishing, at a meso-scale they might not entrain fish longer than if there were no (or very few) FADs in the area. At the existing
FAD density, the ‘island effect’ is more likely to be responsible for the general presence of fish around the island than
the FADs. We recommend further investigation of this hypothesis.

The analysis of scats collected between 1989 and 1995 from the two fur seal species resident on subantarctic Marion Island,
Arctocephalus gazella and A. tropicalis, showed that they fed predominantly on fish of the family Myctophidae (lanternfishes). Scat composition (prey species, abundance)
was very similar for the two species. The seven species of myctophids that formed numerically 90 and 86% of the scat composition
for A. gazella and A. tropicalis, respectively, all showed seasonal fluctuations in their contribution to seal diets. Electrona carlsbergi, E. subaspera, Metelectrona ventralis and Gymnoscopelus fraseri increased in winter in both species of fur seals, whereas Gymnoscopelus piabilis, Protomyctophum choriodon and P. tenisoni showed the opposite trend. Seal diets overlapped substantially with those of the king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) resident on Marion Island, but no evidence for competitive exclusion could be found between these two major warmblooded
consumers of marine resources at the Prince Edward Islands.

Life histories of penaeid shrimp have been classified according to the preferred habitats of postlarval, juvenile, and adult
stages, ranging from exclusively estuarine to exclusively offshore waters. Brown shrimp Farfantepenaeus californiensis migrate to an offshore habitat at the juvenile stage or even a smaller body size. This paper presents results of monthly
samplings from 24 stations over 1 year in the Agiabampo Lagoon complex, a hypersaline lagoon in northwestern Mexico. Five
species of penaeid shrimp were identified, with brown shrimp the most abundant during the year of sampling. Results suggest
that residency of brown shrimp inside this lagoon is longer than reported in previous studies. An interaction between length
and environmental variables (near-surface temperature, salinity, and rainfall) appear to be cues concerning migration.

We analyze and model the structure of spatio-temporal wildfire ignitions in the St. Johns River Water Management District
in northeastern Florida. Previous studies, based on the K-function and an assumption of homogeneity, have shown that wildfire events occur in clusters. We revisit this analysis based
on an inhomogeneous K-function and argue that clustering is less important than initially thought. We also use K-cross functions to study multitype point patterns, both under homogeneity and inhomogeneity assumptions, and reach similar
conclusions as above regarding the amount of clustering. Of particular interest is our finding that prescribed burns seem
not to reduce significantly the occurrence of wildfires in the current or subsequent year over this large geographical region.
Finally, we describe various point pattern models for the location of wildfires and investigate their adequacy by means of
recent residual diagnostics.

Trawling has a significant effect on the structure of marine communities, yet the ubiquity of trawling impacts makes testing
such effects difficult. This study examines trawling impacts on trophodynamics of three fishes among the Gulfs of Castellammare
and Termini Imerese (northern Sicily), the first of which has been subject to a trawling ban since 1990 that initially resulted
in an eightfold increase in total fish biomass. The Gulf of Termini Imerese remains heavily fished and was treated as a control
site. Nitrogen and carbon stable isotope data were used to assess fishing induced changes in trophic levels or source of production
supporting three demersal fish species; Mullus barbatus,
Merluccius merluccius and Lophius budegassa following a control-impact approach. The exclusion of trawling resulted in only small alteration of δ15N in two of the three-three species. There were no systematic changes in the δ13C of any species sampled. Thus, a large influence of trawling on the trophodynamics of the studied species at sampled size
was discounted. Although stable isotopes do not have spatial or temporal resolution to identify detailed shifts in diet composition,
their integrative nature highlights that the trophic role these species play is robust to fishing impacts at scales over which
the fishery operates. This is despite a significant increase in the abundance of these species and of total fish biomass within
the protected area.

Recent ecosystem and fire management research aims to quantify, model and understand historical fire disturbances focusing
on their frequency, size and distribution. Less attention, however, has been paid to fire boundaries and their location on
the landscape. Our study presents a spatial method to quantify the location, pattern and persistence of historical fire boundaries
using tree ring fire scar data in the lower Stein watershed (British Columbia). Data from Pinus ponderosa and Pseudotsuga menziesii collected in 35 one-hectare plots over a 412-hectare study area were analyzed for the period between 1879 and 1947 using
local spatial statistics and boundary detection techniques. Results of the analysis using local spatial statistic Moran’s
I showed significant clustering of boundaries near topographic breaks. To determine and test whether fire boundaries between
plots were persistent, we used boundary detection methods and developed a spatially restricted randomization test. The results
revealed that out of 86 possible boundary links, 8 were significantly persistent (P < 0.025) while another 8 were significantly rare (P < 0.025). These spatial methods can help determine the historical spatial configuration of persistent boundaries and can
be used to maintain natural forest dynamics.

Infectious disease surveillance has become an international top priority due to the perceived risk of bioterrorism. This is
driving the improvement of real-time geo-spatial surveillance systems for monitoring disease indicators, which is expected
to have many benefits beyond detecting a bioterror event. West Nile Virus surveillance in New York State (USA) is highlighted
as a working system that uses dead American Crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) to prospectively indicate viral activity prior to human onset. A cross-disciplinary review is then presented to argue that
this system, and infectious disease surveillance in general, can be improved by complementing spatial cluster detection of
an outcome variable with predictive “risk mapping” that incorporates spatiotemporal data on the environment, climate and human
population through the flexible class of generalized linear mixed models.

Properly sampling soils and mapping soil contamination in urban environments requires that impacts of spatial autocorrelation
be taken into account. As spatial autocorrelation increases in an urban landscape, the amount of duplicate information contained
in georeferenced data also increases, whether an entire population or some type of random sample drawn from that population
is being analyzed, resulting in conventional power and sample size calculation formulae yielding incorrect sample size numbers
vis-à-vis model-based inference. Griffith (in Annals, Association of American Geographers, 95, 740–760, 2005) exploits spatial statistical model specifications to formulate equations for estimating the necessary sample
size needed to obtain some predetermined level of precision for an analysis of georeferenced data when implementing a tessellation
stratified random sampling design, labeling this approach model-informed, since a model of latent spatial autocorrelation
is required. This paper addresses issues of efficiency associated with these model-based results. It summarizes findings from
a data collection exercise (soil samples collected from across Syracuse, NY), as well as from a set of resampling and from
a set of simulation experiments following experimental design principles spelled out by Overton and Stehman (in Communications in Statistics: Theory and Methods, 22, 2641–2660). Guidelines are suggested concerning appropriate sample size (i.e., how many) and sampling network (i.e., where).

A complex multivariate spatial point pattern of a plant community with high biodiversity is modelled using a hierarchical
multivariate point process model. In the model, interactions between plants with different post-fire regeneration strategies
are of key interest. We consider initially a maximum likelihood approach to inference where problems arise due to unknown
interaction radii for the plants. We next demonstrate that a Bayesian approach provides a flexible framework for incorporating
prior information concerning the interaction radii. From an ecological perspective, we are able both to confirm existing knowledge
on species’ interactions and to generate new biological questions and hypotheses on species’ interactions.
