Plant volatiles affect oviposition by codling moths   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Summary. Oviposition in wild codling moth females, collected as overwintering larvae from apple, pear and walnut, was stimulated by volatiles from fruit-bearing green branches of these respective hostplants. Analysis of headspace collections showed that eight compounds present in apple, pear and walnut elicited a reliable antennal response in codling moth females: (E)--ocimene, 4,8-dimethyl-1,(E)3,7-nonatriene, (Z)3-hexenyl acetate, nonanal, -caryophyllene, germacrene D, (E,E)--farnesene, and methyl salicylate. Any one of these compounds is found in many other non-host plants, and host recognition in codling moth is thus likely encoded by a blend of volatiles. A large variation in the blend proportion of these compounds released from apple, pear and walnut suggests a considerable plasticity in the female response to host plant odours. Wild females, collected as overwintering larvae in the field, laid significantly fewer eggs in the absence of host plant volatiles. The offspring of these females, however, reared on a semi-artificial diet in the laboratory, laid as many eggs with or without plant volatile stimulus. Tests with individual females showed that this rapid change in oviposition behaviour may be explained by selection for females which oviposit in the absence of odour stimuli, rather than by preimaginal conditioning of insects when rearing them on semi-artificial diet. Oviposition bioassays using laboratory-reared females are therefore not suitable to identify the volatile compounds which stimulate egglaying in wild females.  相似文献

We used the multilocus DNA fingerprinting technique, amplified fragment length polymorphism, to examine parentage of 902 offspring from eight experimental populations of the dung beetle, Onthophagus taurus. The males of this species exhibit a suit of morphological and behavioural traits that characterise alternative mating tactics. Hornless minor males sneak copulations with females that are guarded by horned major males. Our aims were to provide a prospective assessment of the potential role of frequency dependence in the maintenance of alternative mating tactics, to assess the levels of polyandry, and to determine the patterns of sperm usage by multiply mated females. The average proportion of offspring sired by major and minor males did not co-vary with the relative frequency of each morph present in experimental populations. However, there was some indication that the effective mating frequency (number of females producing offspring sired by a given male) of major and minor males may exhibit frequency dependence. Mating success of both male types declined with increasing numbers of major males. Paternity was positively associated with effective mating frequency. Females produced offspring sired from between one and eight males and, on average, paternity was distributed equally amongst a females mates, regardless of the number of males mated. Differences in fertilisation success among males were not associated with alternative male phenotypes. Neither did a males fertilisation success depend on his genetic dissimilarity with the female. These results are discussed in the context of the evolution of alternative mating strategies, and mechanisms of postcopulatory sexual selection.Communicated by N. Wedell  相似文献

Summary Field observations on the nesting pattern of Schizotetranychus celarius (Banks) (Acari: Tetranychidae) revealed that many individuals live gregariously in a united nest. Behavioural experiments recorded on video tape recorder and 16 mm film showed that adult males and females can effectively defend their nest and offspring from a phytoseiid predator, larvae of Typhlodromus bambusae Ehara (Acari: Phytoseiidae), through counterattacks. The male spider mite often killed the predator's larva and succeeded in defending offspring and nest completely. Comparison of the behaviour patterns recorded between a nest owner parent S. celarius and two kinds of intruders (predators and conspecific males or females) revealed conspicuous differences. I suggest that there is a kind of biparental care in S. celarius, and that the life-pattern of this species therefore fits the definition of subsociality originally framed for insects.  相似文献

In many animal species, individuals compete for resources but avoid escalated conflicts by threat displays, i.e. a mutual signalling behaviour that enables the opponents to predict the outcome of the conflict without the necessity of actual fighting. For example, territory holders may use acoustic signals to communicate not only their own identity and the borders of their territory but also their competitive quality, fighting ability and motivation. Here, we show that male sac-winged bats, Saccopteryx bilineata, adjust their vocal territorial displays according to the fundamental frequency of territorial songs of their opponents. In playback experiments with territorial males, low-frequency stimuli elicited a higher territorial song rate and length than high-frequency stimuli. Male S. bilineata that sing more often and with lower fundamental frequencies have been shown to sire more offspring than their competitors. Fundamental frequency of territorial songs, hence, may reveal male quality and, consequently, the resulting threat posed to competing males. We argue that this is reflected in the increased response of competitors to low-frequency territorial songs shown here. Such competitive signalling behaviour has been shown in a few mammal species like red deer and baboons but, thus far, not in bats. Cassidulus mitis Krau, 1954 is an endemic species from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. To study the reproductive cycle of this species, samples were collected at Praia Vermelha, in Guanabara Bay, from October 1998 to April 2000. The sex ratio for C. mitis was 1:1, and reproduction occurred throughout the year. The gonadal index of males was greater than that of females. Five gametogenic stages were identified in males: early growth, premature, mature, partially spawned and early growth with a partially spawned stage. There were no spent or recovery stages such as those seen in females. Females had six gametogenic stages: recovery, early growth, premature, mature, partially spawned and spent stage; there was no early growth with a partially spawned stage as there was in males. The mean oocyte diameter was 382 m (SD=49 m), and the mean number of juveniles per female was 100 individuals (SD=108). The anterior gonads were frequently smaller than the posterior ones, and there were differences in the gametogenic stages between the anterior and posterior gonads. First sexual maturation occurred in individuals with a diameter of 17 mm. The intestinal wet weight was two- to threefold higher than the test wet weight. Optimal investment theory is based on the assumption that the proximate constraint acting on parental investment is resource based. A trade-off between per offspring investment and total investment seems intuitive. Consequently, a parents investment strategy is expected to represent a trade-off between the benefits of investment for current offspring and the costs to future reproduction for parents. In this study, we provide clear evidence that the costs and benefits of maternal provisioning in the dung beetle Onthophagus taurus influence the amount of provisions provided by the mother. Horse dung is typically of a higher nutritional value than cow dung and females were shown to provide 20% less dung to offspring when provisioning with horse dung. By reducing their investment per offspring and exhibiting a clear preference to provision offspring with horse dung, females were able to produce significantly more offspring. Females provisioning with horse dung received greater fitness returns per unit of investment and experienced lower provisioning costs, in terms of the minimum amount of dung required to produce a surviving offspring, than females provisioning with cow dung. Females provisioning in soil of low moisture content were found to have higher tunneling costs than those provisioning in soil of high moisture content, while the fitness returns per unit of investment did not differ. We adopted a marginal value theorem (MVT) approach to calculate the theoretical optimal level of investment for each dung type and for each soil moisture. Predicted levels of provisioning were lower for horse dung than for cow dung and for moist soil than for dry soil. Therefore, the results of this study are in qualitative agreement with MVT predictions and provide empirical support for the proposal that females can adaptively adjust their level of investment in response to resource and/or habitat quality. However, the theoretically predicted optimal investment yielded a poor quantitative fit with our observed levels of investment, with females providing over twice the investment predicted by the MVT approach. We suggest that this difference may reflect either our inability in directly quantifying all the necessary costs and benefits of investment in O. taurus and/or the applicability of the underlying assumptions of MVT.Communicated by D. Summary Thirty groups of red-cockaded woodpeckers (Picoides borealis) were studied from 1976–1982 to (1) determine the demographic structure of groups, (2) identify the role helpers play in reproductive activities, and (3) investigate the selective pressures promoting sociality and helping behavior. Groups had only 1 mated pair and 0–2 helpers. Approximately half of all groups had helpers and a given group had helpers some years but not others. Helpers, with rare exception, were males 1 or 2 years old and progeny of 1 or both members of the breeding pair. As a result of higher nestling survival, groups with helpers fledged significantly more young per year than unassisted pairs ( , SD=0.97,n=43 vs. , SD=1.01,n=50). Nesting success was also associated with size and quality of nesting period home range, but evidence suggested that the increased number of young fledged resulted directly from the action of helpers. There was a significant positive correlation between reproductive success and experience of breeding females among unassisted pairs but a significant negative correlation among pairs with helpers. In groups with experienced females, helpers were assisting both their mothers and fathers and, therefore, were related to the offspring on the average by 0.50. In groups with inexperienced females, helpers were assisting their fathers and unrelated females and were related to the offspring by 0.25. The red-cockaded woodpecker's unique habit of excavating nest and roost cavities in living pines and the extended period of time required for excavation may be an important ecological constraint that promotes the retention of helpers. Because helpers are related to the offspring they help rear, kin selection and gains in indirect fitness may provide a partial explanation of why red-cockaded woodpecker helpers help. However, the negative correlation between the efficacy of helping behavior and the helpers' relatedness to the offspring they help rear implies that helpers are least effective in producing offspring which would represent greatest gains to indirect fitness. This raises questions about the relative importance of kin selection and indirect fitness in the evolution of helping behavior among red-cockaded woodpeckers.  相似文献

Intracellular symbiotic dinoflagellates are associated with the tropical scyphozoan Linuche unguiculata (Swartz, 1788) throughout all stages of the host's life cycle. During sexual reproduction, eggs are released in mucus strands that contain symbiotic dinoflagellates. Fertilization and development take place externally in the water column. Epifluorescence and transmission electron microscopy showed that unfertilized eggs did not contain intracellular algae, but that infection of the developing embryo was generally successful by the 128-cell stage (10 h after fertilization at 23° C). However, experiments with artificially provided Cellufluor-labeled algae demonstrated that older embryos and planulae could be infected by algae through at least 24 h post-fertilization, indicating that the L. unguiculata symbiosis represents a semi-closed system. This novel mode of symbiont acquisition results in most sexually-produced offspring becoming infected with maternally-transmitted algae during early development, but allows for acquisition of non-maternally-provided algae later in development. Most of the algal symbionts during the early stages of embryonic and larval development are located within ectodermal cells. This is in contrast to the other life-cycle stages of L. unguiculata (i.e., scyphistoma, medusa, ephyra), where symbionts are found within the gastrodermis of the host.  相似文献

Summary Mating behaviour of the katydid Metaballus sp. varies. At sites QS and DB (in 1982) females competed for access to calling males and males chose mates by mating with heavier, more fecund females. At another site (BR) there was no evidence of role-reversal in reproductive behaviour, and males were observed to compete for mates. This species has a large spermatophore, a product of male reproductive glands, that is eaten by the female after mating. Males at the DB site had small reproductive glands. This suggests that some aspect of the QS and DB environments decreases spermatophore production; spermatophores become a limiting resource for females resulting in the reversal in reproductive roles observed at these sites. A field experiment that involved moving individuals from site BR to QS in 1983 determined that mating system was influerced by site (Table 1). At BR, males produced a continuous calling song, a third of the males observed attracted mates, and called for about 30 min before the female arrived; courtship duration was short. Males that were moved from BR to QS encountered a higher density of receptive females as all males attracted females after an average of just 3 min of calling. They changed their behaviour by producing short periodic bursts of song (zipping), and by courting females for long periods of time. The long courtship period may function as as a mate-assessment period for males. The reproductive behaviour of BR males moved to QS differed from that of native QS males only in the length of time spent in copula.  相似文献

Oviposition and embryonic-larval development are described for the muricacean snail Thais (Stramonita) chocolata from the Southeast Pacific coast. As with numerous other muricacean snails, this species engages in communal egg laying, with females depositing egg capsules in clusters on subtidal rocks. Each cluster of capsules contains 100–150 pedunculate, ampulliform egg capsules, with each capsule containing an average of 2,600 small (130 m) eggs. Intracapsular development was followed using light and scanning electron microscopy to describe the successive embryonic stages of the species. Free-swimming veliger larvae of about 225 m length were released from capsules after 49 days incubation at 13.6°C. The planktotrophic larvae were cultured in seawater aquaria by feeding with pure cultures of phytoplankton, recording growth and form of the larvae. Larvae reached competence after 4 months at 22°C, at 1,450–1,740 m in size, and a few larvae were observed through metamorphosis and early definitive growth. The embryonic-larval development of T. chocolata coincides with the general characteristics of the ontogeny observed in other Thais species as well as of other genera of the Rapaninae such as Concholepas. This lent support to grouping these genera into a single clade. The lack of knowledge of the development of free larvae of Thais spp. means that we do not know whether these similarities also include an extensive larval phase as generally characteristic of other members of the clade. The mode of development may be useful in characterizing some clades of this family. Thus for example, the transference of some Thais to the genus Nucella (Subfamily Ocenebrinae) is supported by differences in the mode of embryonic development, which differentiates these subfamilies. Paleobiological data reported for Neogastropoda allow postulation of primitiveness in planktotrophic larval development compared to more recent developmental strategies such as direct development of different types, which characterize various clades of this family.Communicated by O. Female choice on the basis of male traits has been described in an array of taxa but has rarely been demonstrated in reptiles. In the sand lizard (Lacerta agilis), and possibly in other non-territorial reptiles, a male's contribution to a female's fitness is restricted to his genes. In order to choose males of high genetic quality, females have to trade the fitness gain against the costs of active choice. In a Swedish population of sand lizards, long-lived males sired offspring with higher embryonic survival compared to offspring sired by short-lived males. In spite of this female sand lizards did not mate selectively with older and/or larger males. There appeared to be mo reliable cues to male longevity; age-specific male body size was highly variable. Furthermore, estimates of male nuptial coloration did not covary with ectoparasite load and, hence, females cannot use male coloration as a cue to heritable resistance to pathogenic parasite effects. When cues to male genetic quality are poor, or inaccurate, and males make no parental investment, we predict that female choice will be rare. Sand lizard females mating with many partners lay clutches with higher hatching success. Thus, females may obtain good genes for their young by multiple mating, thereby avoiding costs associated with mate choice.  相似文献

Good genes are genetic elements that contribute to lifetime reproductive success, regardless of an individuals additional genotype. Their existence is debated, and most work has targeted their viability benefits to the offspring of choosy females. In the present study, we analyze a case of potential good genes effects in adult male sand lizards (Lacerta agilis). We show that males with a particular RFLP (Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism) MHC genotype (O-males), as opposed to those that lack this genetic element (NO-males), have less ectoparasites under increasing physiological stress (indexed by baseline corticosterone level), and are not constrained by parasites at production of status coloration. Furthermore, O-males are more successful at mate acquisition and guard their partners longer. The maternal–embryo relationship was determined for the piked spurdog (Squalus megalops). In addition, the increase in offspring size with maternal size was studied and the embryonic development was described. Wet weight of in utero eggs and offspring size was correlated with maternal size; larger females produced larger embryos which would have higher survival rate and reproductive value. All embryos present in a female were at a similar stage of development. The external yolk sac is reabsorbed late in gestation, suggesting that embryos are mostly nourished by yolk sac reserves. Embryo size-at-birth varied considerably (180–244 mm total length) as a result of the significant variability in ova size at ovulation. The amounts of water, organic and inorganic matter of embryos at different stages of development were measured to determine possible maternal contributions during embryonic development. Total wet weight from smallest and largest in utero eggs to smallest and largest term embryos changed by +46 and +58%, respectively. This pattern was due to a change in water content by +137 and +154%, and inorganic matter by +100 and +156%. Organic matter of smallest and largest in utero eggs changed by −23 and −17%, respectively. The uterus of pregnant females became specialised for water and mineral transport, not nutrient provision. These results indicate that S. megalops is a strict yolk-sac viviparous species with no maternal contribution of organic matter during development.  相似文献

Summary The primary sex ratio and the selective factors associated with it were investigated in the aphid Pemphigus spyrothecae. The sexuparae gave birth to an average of 1.99 ± 0.01 (1–2) males and 5.06 ± 0.09 (2–6) females [± SE (range), n = 147]. The average weight of individual males was 16.2±0.86 (13–18) g (n = 5) and of females 40.7 ± 0.71 (38–46) g (n = 15). The overall investment ratio by the mother sexuparae was therefore 1:6.4, equivalent to a proportionate investment in sons of 0.135 (interquartiel range: 0.117–0.165). There was a highly significant correlation between the size of the sexupara and the number of her daughters: the number of sons was independent of sexupara size. Field observations and laboratory experiments showed that the sexuparae aggregate on poplar bark before giving birth to the sexuals: they appear to behave in such a way that there is always at least one other sexupara in the crevice with them. The average number of sexuparae forming a foundress group, within which offspring could potentially mate with each other, was 2.48±0.19 (1–9) (n = 80). The life-time activity patterns of the sexuals (which moult four times but do not feed) was described. Both sexes are active shortly after birth; they are then immobile for a long period but become very active again after emerging as adults (after about 42 h in males, 51 h in females). Each male can mate with up to 14 females. The females are receptive to a second male for only a relatively short period (ca. 15–20 min) after their first mating. There is considerable competition between males during mating (just as intense between clonal sibs as non-sibs) and evidence for post-copulatory mate-guarding by the males. There is no evidence that females prefer to mate with non-sibs rather than sibs. The observed sex ratios and the mating behaviour of the aphids are discussed in relation to models of local mate competition assuming variable female fecundity, as developed by Frank (1987a, b) and Yamaguchi (1985) (the constant male hypothesis) and by Stubblefield and Seger (1990).  相似文献

Summary. Metaphycus sp. nr. flavus (Encyrtidae: Hymenoptera) is a parasitoid species collected from the Mediterranean region which lays its eggs in the immature stages of several economically important soft scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccidae), including brown soft scale, Coccus hesperidum L. (= host insect). Preliminary tests suggested that the parasitoid is most successful in producing offspring when it oviposits in the younger stages of brown soft scale. In Y-olfactometer bioassays measuring wasp choices and residence times, naïve parasitoids were significantly more attracted to yucca leaves infested with 26, 27, or 28 d-old scale than to uninfested leaves, whereas leaves with older (29-30 d-old) scale were no more attractive than uninfested leaves. Parasitoids also spent significantly more time in the arm with yucca leaves infested with 26 d-old scale than in the arm with uninfested leaves. These results are consistent with observations of the parasitoids reproductive success on scale of different ages, whereby older scale are more likely to encapsulate the developing eggs of M. sp. nr. flavusfemales than are younger scale. Further bioassays determined that yucca leaves that had been infested with 26 d-old scale but from which the scale had been removed were as attractive as infested leaves. In contrast, infested yucca leaves from which scale had been removed and the leaves subsequently washed with distilled water were less attractive than infested leaves. Furthermore, the wash water containing scale residues was attractive to female wasps. In total, these results suggest that Metaphycussp. nr. flavus females utilize volatile, water soluble compounds produced by brown soft scale as cues to locate suitable hosts.  相似文献

Summary In many insects nutrients transferred by the male to the female at mating are later incorporated into both the eggs and soma of the mated females. Accordingly, it has been suggested that female insects can use these male-derived nutrients both for somatic maintenance and to increase both the number and quality of their offspring. Moreover, much discussion is presently devoted to whether the male nuptial gift represents paternal investment, defined as any increase in given male's total surviving progeny by increasing the reproductive output by a given female, or mating effort which obtains if a male gains by increasing the proportion of eggs he fertilizes from a given female (Parker and Simmons 1989). If the male nuptial gift represents parental investment it should be expected to benefit predominantly the offspring sired by the donor, whereas the physiological fate of the male nuptial gift is somewhat irrelevant under the mating effort explanation. In this paper we test these issues by studying the lifetime fecundity, egg weights and longevity of two groups of females of the polyandrous green-veined white butterfly, Pieris napi, one group of which was allowed to mate only once and the other of which was allowed to mate at liberty, the latter group of females mating on average 2.28 times. Moreover, to test the incorporation rate of male-derived nutrients, we performed a second set of experiments where females were allowed to mate with radioactively labelled males. The results showed that polyandrous females had higher lifetime fecundity compared to monandrous females, laying on average 1.61 as many eggs, and that the difference in cumulative fecundity between the two groups was statistically significant from the 5th day of egg-laying onwards. Polyandrous females also lived longer and maintained egg weight at a high level for longer than monandrous females. Largely concomitant with egg-laying rate, incorporation rate of male-derived nutrients peaked 3–4 days after mating, subsequently tapering off to stabilize at about 40% of the maximum. Given the opportunity, female P. napi remated after 3–5 days, the duration of the refractory period being positively correlated with ejaculate mass. Hence, although the nutrient investment of the first male to mate with a female subsidizes the progeny of later-mating males, the male nuptial gift in P. napi clearly qualifies as both paternal investment and mating effort. Summary Female threespine sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus from a marine population were presented simultaneously with two dummy males that differed in size. When the dummies were moved with a carousel apparatus in a way that roughly simulated a male courtship activity (circling) females responded to the dummies with following behaviour normally directed to courting males. Female sexual response was elicited more effectively by the larger (supernomal) dummy, even though it exceeded by 25% the length of the largest males in the study population. Females did not show complete preference for the larger dummy but allocated courtship effort in proportion to the sizes of the two dummies (Fig. 3). The relative projection areas of the two dummies provided the best predictor of how courtship was allocated between them, suggesting a perceptual basis on which females might select mates. This pattern of partial preference for the supernormal dummy occurred in females that exhibited either high or low amounts of following behaviour and is apparently independent of female responsiveness. Supernormality may therefore provide a mechanism whereby secondary sexual traits can be elaborated, even without evolutionary change in preference for those traits by the opposite sex.  相似文献

Summary In the pipefishes Syngnathus typhle and Nerophis ophidion, males have been shown to limit female reproductive rate, and females to compete for access to males. Hence, these species fit the criteria for sex-role reversal. Males brood the eggs and provide the offspring with nutrients, oxygen and an osmoregulated environment. Moreover, in S. typhle both sexes prefer a larger mate when given a choice. Sexual selection theory predicts that males should be more choosy than females, and that was experimentally demonstrated in this study. We predicted that S. typhle males should be less eager to copulate than S. typhle females with an unattractive (i.e. small) mate. We measured eagerness as the time from the start of the experiment until copulation occurred. Males with unattractive partners took significantly longer to copulate than females with unattractive partners. Moreover, females invariably initiated the courtship dance, and resumed it quicker after copulation than did the males, again suggesting reproductive hesitation in males. Neither male nor female size per se was correlated with time until copulation. In N. ophidion, where we have previously shown that males prefer larger to smaller females, we found that females did not select males with regard to size. Our results are consistent both with earlier findings (males limit female reproduction and females compete for males) and with operational sex ratios in nature: in seven annual field samples in June, the numbers of S. typhle females with ripe eggs always significantly exceeded numbers of receptive males. Hence, the potential cost of being choosy in terms of lost matings is much higher in females than in males. This study investigated hormonal and demographic processes underlying unimale and multimale mating systems in primates. Reproductive skew and challenge models of male competition provide conflicting predictions of the relationship of male residence to group composition and androgen regulation. These predictions were tested using endocrine and socioecological data from Kenyan vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops). Serum samples from 57 adult male monkeys, drawn from 19 separate groups and 4 populations, were assayed for testosterone by radioimmunoassay. Male ability to respond to conspecific challenge was assessed by their testosterone response to the capture protocol.Analyses showed that reproductive skew models were useful predictors of intergroup and interpopulation variation in male residence and T profiles. The Limited Control model of male residence was supported by positive correlations of the number of males per group with the number of females without dependent offspring, demonstrating that monopolization potential was a key determinant of male residence. Testosterone concentrations under conditions that elevated serum levels were positively correlated with infanticide risk, supporting the Concession model. Population comparisons provided evidence for increased T responsiveness where groups were predominantly unimale. Feeding rates, patterns of prey selection, and starvation tolerance were investigated for adult males and females of the cyclopoid copepod Corycaeus anglicus collected from the waters of Friday Harbor, Washington, USA. Selection by C. anglicus was determined largely by prey body-size, but was also affected by species and developmental stage. Small developmental stages of all prey species were fed upon at relatively low rates. The small calanoid species Acartia clausii was increasingly vulnerable to predation by C. anglicus as it progressed through successive developmental stages. Larger prey species, Pseudocalanus sp. and Calanus pacificus, were more vulnerable in intermediate stages, the C3 and N6 stages, respectively. Larger and smaller prey were characteristically attacked at different sites on their bodies; however, attack sites fell within a similar range of body widths, 130 to 170 m. Males of Corycaeus anglicus killed a maximum of 1.4 prey d-1 when feeding on the optimally-sized adult females of Acartia clausii, which are approximately equivalent to its own body length. Males fed at approximately double the rates of females. Despite its small size and apparent lack of metabolic stores, this cyclopoid is highly tolerant of starvation conditions. Median survival time without food is at least 2 wk for both males and females.
