Most of the oyster mariculture beds in Taiwan are in areas located along the west of the island. One of these areas is the Charting coast, where green oysters were found in 1986. During this incident, which became internationally notorious, mass mortality occurred in the Charting oyster beds. After this discovery, measures were taken by the authorities to counter pollution which lead to the problem. The effectiveness of these pollution control actions was evaluated in this study. Two water column indicators, particulate and sediment, and oysters were sampled and analyzed for metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni) in Charting and its neighboring areas, Kuen-Shen Lake and Shin-Da Harbor, and the control area/station, Dah-Pen Wan. The current study shows that copper and zinc concentrations in both oysters and particulates significantly decreased in the Charting area, compared with concentrations found during the period of the green oyster incident. Six years after the incident, the copper concentration in oysters had fallen from a high of 4400 μg/g dry weight to an average of 300±69 μg/g dry weight, figures similar to the copper concentration in 1982. The pollution control actions taken after the incident are believed to be the cause of this recovery of the coastal environment. Nevertheless, Charting still produced oysters with the highest copper and zinc concentrations among the areas investigated. Further measures currently being taken by the government, including removing the sediment of some portions of Erhjin Chi, should be able to bring the oyster copper concentrations down to the levels similar to those observed in the neighboring area, (average concentration below 200 μg/g dry weight or all time maximum concentration below 500 μg/g dry weight).  相似文献

Depuration of copper and zinc by green oysters and blue mussels of Taiwan   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper describes depuration processes of copper and zinc in green oysters (Crassostrea gigas) and in blue mussels (Mytilus smarangdium) collected from an environment with heavy copper contamination, and then transferred to natural clean seawater. Results show that the total loss of copper content per oyster is an exponential function of exposure time for the first 6 days with a depuration rate of 351 microg g(-1) day(-1) and then levels off. During this exponential decrease period approximately 67% of the copper accumulated in green oysters was depurated. However, when the copper contents in the oysters decreased from 2225 +/- 111 microg g(-1) to 344 +/- 18.7 microg g(-1) the depuration rates decreased from 245 microg g(-1) day(-1) to 0.08 microg g(-1) day(-1). This means that green oysters had a 16-fold higher copper depuration rate (351 microg g(-1) day(-1)) than normal oysters (21.5 microg g(-1) day(-1)) for the first 6 days. However, the depuration of accumulated copper and zinc by the mussels was a fast process in natural clean seawater. About 91% of the accumulated copper was lost during the first 6-day period; copper contents declined from 20.2 +/- 3.41 microg g(-1) to 1.80 +/- 0.21 microg g(-1). Only 36% of the accumulated zinc was lost during a depuration period of 6 days. Calculations show that the biological half-lives of copper in green and normal oysters were 11.6 and 25.1 days, respectively. The biological half-lives of zinc in green and normal oysters were 16.7 and 30.1 days, respectively. In spite of the relatively low initial copper content in blue mussels being 20.2 +/- 3.41 microg g(-1), the biological half-life is only 6.40 days. From these results it is important to emphasise that the fastest turnover rate is for copper in blue mussels. However, zinc is more retentive in blue mussels than copper.  相似文献

This study presents the distribution of Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Hg and As in various marine organisms collected along the western coast of Taiwan from 1991 to 1998, and also evaluates the time variation of Cu in oysters before (1980-85) and after (1986-98) the "green oyster" incident. The results show that relatively high geometric mean (GM) concentrations of Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, As and Hg were generally found in Crassostrea gigas (Cu=229 microg/g, Zn=783 microg/g), Gomphina aeguialtera (Pb=30.3 microg/g), Tegillarca granosa (Cd=2.85 microg/g), Thais clavigera (As=96.9 microg/g) and Parapenaeopsis cornuta (Hg=1.35 microg/g), respectively. Especially, maximum Cu and Zn concentrations (GM=229 and 783 microg/g, respectively) in oysters (C. gigas) from different culture areas were much higher than those of the other organisms by about 1.13-458 and 2.40-63.7 times, respectively. Similarly, rock-shells (Thais clavigera) had a high capacity for accumulating Cu (GM=202 microg/g) and Zn (GM=326 microg/g) under the same physico-chemical conditions. The highest GM Cu and Zn concentrations of 1108 (range from 113 to 2806) and 1567 (range from 303 to 3593) microg/g were obtained in oysters from the Hsiangshan coastal area, one of the most important oyster culture areas in Taiwan. However, the highest GM Cd and As concentrations of 6.82 and 19.3 microg/g were found in oysters from the Machu Islands. Mean Cu concentrations in the oysters from the Erhjin Chi estuary declined from 2194+/-212 microg/g in 1986-90 to 545 microg/g (GM) in 1991-96. In the Hsiganshan area, GM Cu concentrations of 909 microg/g (1991-96) and 1351 microg/g (1997-98) in oysters were significantly higher than those of 201 microg/g (1980-85) and 682 microg/g (1986-90). The gradually increasing levels of Cu and Zn in the oysters from the Hsiangshan area have been observed year by year.  相似文献

The present study aimed at studying the transplantation of oysters from a polluted site Lau Fau Shan (existing oyster culture zone) in Deep Bay to two clean sites mariculture zones at Yung Shue O and Kat O. The hydrological data, growth of oyster shell length, mortality and metal contents in whole soft tissue were monitored from February 1993 to February 1994. The high growth phase (increase in shell length) and gametogenesis (decrease in dry weight of whole soft tissue) were noted in winter (with low temperature and high salinity), and slow growth phase and spawning in summer (with high temperature and low salinity). Significant reductions (p<0.05) of Cd, Cr and Pb concentrations (dry wt basis) in soft tissue of transplanted oysters were observed at Kat O by 29, 55 and 29%, respectively, and at Yung Shue O by 34, 44 and 34%, respectively, with respect to the baseline values for the first batch of oysters and the concentrations in samples collected from Lau Fau Shan in the same months. Maximum reductions of total metal burden in whole soft tissue (microg per individual oyster) of the first oyster batch were found for Cd, Cr, Pb and Sb to be 62, 49, 60 and 25%, respectively, at Kat O, and to be 56, 47, 32 and 49%, respectively, at Yung Shue O. For the second batch of oysters transplanted to Yung Shue O in July 1993, significant reductions (p<0.05) of Cd concentration and total burden of Cd by 60 and 21%, respectively, were observed in February 1994. The high accumulated mortality and the significant (p<0.05) lower growth rate of the transplanted oysters illustrated that the best time for transplantation of oysters should be between the end of gametogenesis and the start of spawning (i.e. January and February), and the oysters should not be kept for longer than 3 months at the transplantation sites.  相似文献

Pollutant concentrations detected in oysters from 12 different culture areas of Taiwan (especially for the Hsiangshan area and the Machu Islands) from 1991-98 were evaluated to investigate potential carcinogenic (inorganic As and organochlorine pesticides) and non-carcinogenic (Cu, Zn, Cd and inorganic As) risk to the public from ingestion of the oysters. The highest geometric mean (GM) Cu and Zn concentrations of 1108 (range 113-2806) and 1567 (range 303-3593) microg/g dry weight were obtained in oysters from the Hsiangshan coastal area. The maximum GM Cd and As concentrations of 6.82 and 19.3 microg/g dry weight were found in oysters from the Machu Islands area. The p,p'-DDE values range from not detectable in Penghu Islands' oysters to 164 ng/g dry weight in Machu Islands' oysters. The highest tDDT (sum of p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDD and p,p'-DDT) concentrations of 337 and 340 ng/g dry weight were found in oysters from Kimmen and Machu Islands, respectively. A calculated target hazard quotient (THQ; daily intake/reference dose) of 11.4 (based on 139 g oysters/day) for Cu caused by consuming oysters from the Hsiangshan area is higher than that from other areas (range 0.124-5.95). The highest average Cu intake from Hsiangshan's oysters for individuals is 11.4 times (i.e. THQ=11.4) more than that of reference dose (40 microg/kg/day). However, the maximum THQ values for Cd and As caused by consuming oysters collected from the Machu Islands were 5.57 and 2.63 for Cd and As, respectively. Generally, the results of THQ showed that if only the maximally exposed individuals were considered, the value of 65.4% for oyster was higher than 1.0 in comparison with reference dose. All cancer risk estimates for inorganic As from consuming oysters were higher than 10(-6) (range from 128x10(-6) to 509x10(-6) for maximally exposed individuals and range from 17.1x10(-6) to 68.0x10(-6) for typically exposed individuals, respectively); that is the risk of the lower end of the range of acceptable risk. The highest risk estimate for inorganic As was 509x10(-6) for consumption of oysters by Machu Islands' residents. The lifetime cancer risks of 19.0x10(-6) for tDDT by consuming oysters from the Machu Islands was higher than those from the Penghu Islands (0.37x10(-6)). Therefore, the sum of lifetime cancer risks for tDDT and inorganic As had the highest risks (total risk=528x10(-6)) of consuming oysters from the Machu Islands. Furthermore, a 10(-6) upper limit on lifetime risk as the health protection standard would require maximum oyster consumption rates of approximately 0.26 g/day.  相似文献

This paper evaluates the relationships between copper species in sediments and accumulation by the purple clam (Hiatula diphos) and venus clam (Gomphina aeguilatera) collected from the field and culture (aquaculture) ponds in the polluted coastal area of Lukang, Taiwan. Sediment was sampled along with the molluscs, including oysters (Crassostrea gigas), purple clams (Hiatula diphos), rock-shells (Thais clavigera), venus clams (Gomphina aeguilatera), and hard clams (Meretrix lusoria), from two unique environments of Lukang during the period from August 1993 to July 1994. The data indicate that the total copper concentrations in sediments from culture ponds (185 microg g(-1)) was higher than those of the field (44.0 microg g(-1)). Copper species in sediments were analyzed by a sequential leaching technique. Results show that concentrations of various copper species in the sediments are in the range of 1.14 +/- 0.59 to 13.2 +/- 22.4 microg g(-1) and 0.36 +/- 0.24 to 133 +/- 36.7 microg g(-1) for the two environments, respectively. Also the exchangeable copper in sediment from culture ponds was 15 times higher than that from the field. In addition, the sum of exchangeable and copper carbonates had the highest percentages of copper in both the pond sediment (86.6 %) and the field sediment (50.7 %). Maximum copper concentrations (309 +/- 35.1 microg g(-1)) in oysters were much higher than those in the other benthic organisms by about 4-127 times. Similarly, the data also showed that copper concentrations in Thais clavigera were 12-32 times higher than those in other benthic organisms. Copper concentrations in various benthic organisms differed significantly (p < 0.05) from that in Thais clavigera. This capacity makes Thais clavigera a potential candidate for monitoring copper in marine sediments. In terms of copper species, the best correlation was generally obtained between copper carbonates in sediments and copper concentrations in Hiatula diphos (r = 0.886*). A strong multiple regression correlation (p < 0.05, r2 = 0.7894) also indicates that the copper carbonates may dominate as the available form of copper to Hiatula diphos from various environments in the Lukang coastal area under natural physicochemical conditions.  相似文献

Larval stages of bivalve molluscs are highly sensitive to pollutants. Oysters from a hatchery from Normandy (English Channel) were induced to spawn, and fertilized eggs were exposed to copper or cadmium for 24 h. Metal accumulation (from 0.125 to 5 microg Cu L(-1) and from 25 to 200 microg Cd L(-1)) and MT concentrations were measured in larvae. Compared to controls, larvae accumulated copper and cadmium with an increase in MT concentrations particularly with cadmium (i.e. 130.96 ng Cu (mg protein)(-1) and 12.69 microg MT (mg protein)(-1) at 1 microg Cu L(-1) versus 23.19 ng Cu (mg protein)(-1) and 8.92 microg MT (mg protein)(-1) in control larvae; 334.3 ng Cd (mg protein)(-1) and 11.70 microg MT (mg protein)(-1) at 200 microg Cd L(-1) versus 0.87 ng Cd (mg protein)(-1) and 4.60 microg MT (mg protein)(-1) in control larvae). Larvae were also obtained from oysters of a clean area (Arcachon Bay) and a polluted zone (Bidassoa estuary) and exposed to copper in the laboratory, their MT concentration was measured as well as biomarkers of oxidative stress. Biomarker responses and sensitivity to copper for the larvae from Arcachon oysters were higher than for those from Bidassoa.  相似文献

We investigated the water-soluble arsenic compounds present in the soft tissues of both the pearl-free and the pearl-containing pearl oysters. After dividing the soft tissue into five parts, i.e., adductor muscle, foot, mantle, viscera and gill, each part was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry for the arsenic compounds accumulated in it. Arsenic concentration of each tissue part ranged from 22.1 to 45.7 microg g(-1) of dry tissue in the pearl-free pearl oyster and from 27.4 to 50.4 microg g(-1) of dry tissue in the pearl-containing pearl oyster. On the grounds of the present evidence the major water-soluble arsenic compound accumulated in each part was identified as arsenobetaine without exception in both types of pearl oysters (94.3-99.7% in the pearl-free pearl oyster and 87.2-99.7% in the pearl-containing pearl oyster). Trace or small amounts of arsenic compounds including tetramethylarsonium ion and arsenocholine were also detected in some parts. The levels of these minor arsenicals were a little higher in pearl-free pearl oyster than in the pearl-containing pearl oyster. This study confirms the hygienic safety of the soft tissues of both the pearl-free and the pearl-containing pearl oysters, as food.  相似文献

The power relationships of short-term net uptake and of in-situ body burden with body weight were examined. The accumulation of soft tissue zinc in the American oyster (Crassostrea virginica) was related to time integration of uptake. Short term uptake of (65)Zn was measured in the laboratory. It was (i) a function of the (dry soft-tissue) weight of the oyster, (ii) inversely related to the salinity of the ambient water, and (iii) increased linearly with ambient concentrations. When in-situ soft-tissue zinc body burdens of oysters from the James River and the Rappahannock River were fit to power functions of body weights (y = aWb), the values of b for all sites were larger by 1 than the powers for (65)Zn uptake when b was adjusted for the oyster-bed salinities. The soft-tissue zinc concentration (y/W) of an oyster increased continuously, but the rate of the increase was reduced as the oyster grows larger. Both short-term uptake and in-situ body burden varied with salinity. The soft-tissue zinc concentrations of hooked mussels (Ischadium recurvum) from the Rappahannock River oyster beds, contrary to the oysters, appeared to be in equilibrium with ambient concentrations.  相似文献

The occurrence and distribution of alkylphenols (APs, i.e., 4-tert-octylphenol (4-t-OP) and 4-nonlyphenol isomers (4-NP)) in oysters (Crassostrea gigas), snails (Thais clavigera), coastal water and coastal sediments of the western coast of southern Taiwan are investigated. Alkylphenols were present in all matrices of interest: in water, ranging from 61 to 370 ng/l, in sediments, ranging from 27 to 190 ng/g, and in biota samples (i.e., oyster and snail), ranging from 20 to 5190 ng/g. Statistical analysis indicated that the probability distribution of most determined concentrations in oyster and snail samples was log-normal distribution. The bioaccumulation of APs resulted in a seasonal variation with respect to their compositions and concentrations in oyster and snail samples. For oysters, concentrations of APs in winter exceeded those in summer. In contrast, those in snails in summer exceeded those in winter. Estimated biomagnification factors of APs from snails to oysters ranged from 1.4 to 4.3 in summer, and 0.5 to 0.8 in winter on the dry weight basis. The results suggested that seasonally mediated physiological changes, such as dilution caused by growth, biotransformation and metabolism, may affect the bioaccumulation of APs in according to season and organism.  相似文献

Accumulated body concentrations of cadmium, copper and zinc were investigated in 19 species of intertidal invertebrates (the barnacles Tetraclita squamosa, Capitulum mitella, Balanus amphitrite, Megabalanus volcano, the bivalves Saccostrea cucullata, Septifer virgatus and Brachidontes atratus, the chiton Acanthopleura japonica and the gastropods Cellana grata, Cellana toreuma, Patelloida saccharina, Patelloida pygmaea, Siphonaria japonica, Tegula argyrostoma, Lunella coronata, Monodonta labio, Nerita albicilla, Thais clavigera and Thais luteostoma) collected from a relatively unpolluted area in Hong Kong, i.e. two shores within the Cape d'Aguilar Marine Reserve. In general body metal concentrations could be explained by the accumulation strategy of the analysed organism and by physiological requirements for the essential metals, i.e. copper and zinc. Zinc concentrations were, therefore, greatest in the barnacles and the oyster S. cucullata. Copper concentrations were greatest in those gastropods containing the respiratory pigment haemocyanin and in S. cucullata. One species collected from the sheltered shore, i.e. T. luteostoma, had much higher copper body concentrations compared with exposed shore conspecifics and this may be attributed to a diet that was dominated by oysters, which have high copper body concentrations. In contrast to both copper and zinc, cadmium body concentrations showed little interspecific variation.  相似文献

In the present study, effect of pH on the mortality and accumulation of copper in various tissue and organs of Oreochromis niloticus were tested at varying concentrations of copper in the medium and over different periods of time. Experimental animals were exposed to pH 5.5, 7.8 and 9.5 and 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 and 5.0 ppm copper over periods of 7, 15 and 30 days in liver, gills and muscle were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometric techniques. The rate of mortality at 1.0 and 5.0 ppm Cu was 100% after 7 days of exposure at pH 5.5 while at 5.0 ppm Cu was 66% after 30 days of exposure at pH 7.8. No mortality was observed in any of the copper concentrations tested at pH 9.5. In all pH levels, tissue accumulation of copper increased with increasing concentrations of copper in the medium at a given exposure period. In all pH values tested, highest levels of copper were found in the liver of O. niloticus, followed by the gills and muscle tissues. Accumulation of copper in all tissues were higher at pH 5.5 compared with the other pH values in all the conditions tested.  相似文献

The amounts of organotin compounds such as butyltins [sigma BTs: tributyl- (TBT), dibutyl- (DBT), monobutyl- (MBT)] and phenyltins [sigma PhTs: triphenyl- (TPhT), diphenyl- (DPhT) and monophenyl- (MPhT)] in rock shells, Thais clavigera, from the northern (Shiangsan), central (Lukang) and southern (Chiku) Taiwan oyster mariculture areas varied with season and location. High values of sigma BTs (mainly TBT) and low values of sigma PhTs (mainly TPhT) were found during winter (January 1999) at Shiangsan, while high amounts of sigma PhTs (mainly TPhT) and low sigma BTs (mainly TBT) were found during summer (August 1998) at Lukang. The snails were also affected by imposex. Imposex at Shiangsan, Lukang and Chiku increased from 67.1, 59.3 and 36.7% in summer to 100, 100 and 80% in winter, respectively. Relative penis size indices similar trend at Chiku site. No male displayed rock shells were found at Shiangsan and Lukang in winter. Linear correlations between pseudopenis length versus TBT (r = 0.7655, P < 0.001), DBT (r = 0.4253, P < 0.05), MBT (r = 0.5865, P < 0.01) and TPhT (r = -0.6160, P < 0.01) were obtained significant. Among 200 samples, significant positive correlations between length (pseudopenis/shell) ratio of female versus TBT (r = 0.6944, P < 0.005) and sigma BTs (r = 0.6413, r < 0.01) were also observed. The weak correlations between length (pseudopenis/shell) ratio of female versus DBT (r = 0.3085) and MBT (r = 0.4240, P < 0.1) and TPhT (-0.4917, P < 0.05; negative correlation) could indicate that DBT, MBT and TPhT have little or no effect on the development of imposex in rock shells.  相似文献

The potential sources of relatively great concentrations of arsenic (As) in oysters from the Southeastern United States coast was examined in a study conducted from August 1998 through October 1999. A transplant experiment was conducted to determine whether genetic or environmental differences accounted for the observed difference between Southeastern oysters, and oysters elsewhere on the east coast. Oysters originating in South Carolina (a region where As in oysters is usually greater) and Maryland (a region where arsenic is oysters is less) were reciprocally transplanted to determine whether site of growth or site of origin would determine the accumulation of As. To examine the potential role of various potential sources of As exposure on the concentrations of As in oysters, samples of native oysters, water, pore water and suspended particles were collected and analyzed for As monthly, while the sediments were examined four times during the year. Concentrations of As in transplanted oysters matched the concentrations of As in oysters native to the area in which they were grown, rather than that of oysters from their site of origin. Oysters from South Carolina had average concentrations of As approximately 3.2 times that of oysters from Maryland. This enrichment was similar to enrichments of water (3.4 times), sediment (2.5 times), suspended particles (1.7 times), and pore water (3.1 times) from South Carolina compared to Maryland. This supports the hypothesis that the cause of the apparent As enrichments in the Southeastern oysters is environmental, but leaves the question of the primary source for arsenic incorporation by oysters open.  相似文献

In vitro acute toxicities of azadirachtin-containing pesticides (Neemix and Bioneem), formulated with neem tree extracts, and pure azadirachtin (AZA), the believed active ingredient, were studied using hybridoma and oyster cells and were compared to results obtained using the standard in vivo Daphnia pulex toxicity assay. Neem-based pesticides showed relatively high toxicity to both hybridoma and oyster cells at concentrations of 1 microg AZA/mL and higher. The IC50 values for hybridoma cells were 2.15 microg AZA/mL for Neemix and 1.67 pg AZA/mL for Bioneem. Oyster cells had IC50 values of 2.18 microg AZA/mL for Neemix and 9.46 pg AZA/mL for Bioneem. Purified AZA, however, did not appear to be as toxic as the formulations. D. pulex was also more sensitive to neem-based pesticide exposure than that of pure AZA. The applications and limits of these two in vitro models for testing the acute toxicity of AZA-based pesticides are discussed in comparison with the in vivo D. pulex test.  相似文献

This study surveyed the total arsenic (As) and As species contents in clams (Meretrix lusoria) farmed in areas of hyperendemic blackfoot disease (BFD) in southwestern Taiwan. Total As and As species in sediment and pond water were also analyzed to examine the bioaccumulation of As in clams in their exposure environment. Moreover, potential carcinogenic risks associated with the ingestion of As in aquacultural clams were evaluated probabilistically. The average total As contents in medium-sized and small clams were 7.62 and 10.71 microg/g (dry wt), respectively. The content of the As species in this study was approximately 61% of the total As content. The other unquantified As species are possibly arsenocholine, arsenosugar and arsenolipid. The average ratios of inorganic As contents to total As contents in clams ranged from 12.3% to 14.0% which are much higher than that found in the farmed oyster (Crassostrea gigas), indicating that humans may expose to larger quantities of inorganic As by ingesting the same amount of clam as oyster. Using different ingestion rates derived by the average consumption method and the questionnaire method, the estimated risks to human health associated with consuming clams from the BFD area ranging from slightly to largely exceed the standard target risk. Based on the estimation of the TR model, a 0.18g/day-person of the safe ingestion rate of clams in the BFD region is recommended.  相似文献

Along 10 campaigns, from June 2002 to September 2004, the concentrations of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in sediments and oysters (Crassostrea sp.) taken from four sites in the Unesco protected natural reserve of Urdaibai (Basque Country, Bay of Biscay). Total PAH concentration ranged from 0.7 to 140 microg kg(-1) (dw) in the case of sediments, and from 300 to 1400 microg kg(-1) (dw) in the case of oysters. During this study, the coast of the Bay of Biscay was severely affected by the Prestige oil spill (November 2002). Presumably, as a consequence of this accident, both spatial and temporal variations of the PAHs, as well as the sources of the PAHs were affected by the oil spill, and this effect was observed in the total concentrations and, especially, in several diagnostic ratios and in multivariate data analysis. Finally, both BAF (bioaccumulation factor) and BSAF (biota-sediment accumulation factor) parameters were calculated to conclude that particulate matter seems to be the most favourable uptake pathway of PAHs in oysters from this estuary.  相似文献

Cultured oysters from Hiroshima Bay were analysed to determine the content of nine trace elements, cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) and compared with oysters treated for 48 h in both artificial sea water and a solution of 0.5% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) in artificial sea water. It was found that the values of As and Fe in both groups of treated oysters were significantly lower than in the untreated oysters and that the Pb and Mn levels tended to be lower. It was also found that oysters treated in 0.5% EDTA solution in artificial sea water had lower levels of Cd and Cu than the oysters treated only in artificial sea water.  相似文献

Ozone measurements (daily maximum values) from the Aerometric Information Retrieval System database are analyzed for selected sites, during 1980 to 1988, in southeastern USA. Frequency distributions, for most sites during most years, show a typical bell-shaped curve with the higher frequency around the yearly daily maximum ozone mean of about 100 to about 110 microg m(-3) (50-55 ppbv). Abnormal years in ozone concentration may skew the distribution as the mean shifts. A correlation of daily maximum ozone concentrations above 140 microg m(-3) (70 ppbv) between sites shows a division between the sites in the northern protion of the region and those in the southern portion of the region. Variations in ozone levels are well correlated over distances of several hundred kilometers, suggesting that high values are associated with synoptic scale episodes. An ozone exposure analysis also shows higher ozone exposures (250-300 ppm days) in the northerly sites as compared to the southerly sites (150-170 ppm days).  相似文献

In 1997, concentrations of cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb) and nickel (Ni) were analysed in green-lipped mussels (Perna viridis) from three mariculture zones located in the north-east (Kat O), south (Lo Tik Wan) and to the west (Ma Wan) of Hong Kong. Spatial differences in the concentration of metals were found, chromium and copper were higher at Ma Wan and Lo Tik Wan compared to Kat O in the north-east. In contrast, the highest levels of lead (mean = 4.37 microg/g dry wt) were recorded at Kat O. There were no differences in the level of nickel between the study sites. A comparison of the metal concentrations in mussels with the results of a previous study seven years before, in 1990, showed a twofold increase in the mean levels of cadmium for all three sites. However, levels of the other metals in 1997 were lower by 12-32% for chromium, 32-39% for copper and 24-25% for nickel. The greatest reductions were recorded for lead: Kat O (39%), Ma Wan (51%) and Lo Tik Wan (75%). This may be related to the introduction of lead-free petrol in 1991. Despite the apparent reduction in some heavy metal bioaccumulation between 1990 and 1997, from a public health risk perspective, the data suggest a continued need for monitoring of heavy metals in mussels from mariculture zones.  相似文献
