The purpose of this study was to assess contaminated soil and groundwater for the urban redevelopment of a rapid transit railway and a new mega-shopping area. Contaminated soil and groundwater may interfere with the progress of this project, and residents and shoppers may be exposed to human health risks. The study area has been remediated after application of first remediation technologies. Of the entire area, several sites were still contaminated by waste materials and petroleum. For zinc (Zn) contamination, high Zn concentrations were detected because waste materials were disposed in the entire area. For petroleum contamination, high total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) and hydrocarbon degrading microbe concentrations were observed at the depth of 7 m because the underground petroleum storage tank had previously been located at this site. Correlation results suggest that TPH (soil) concentration is still related with TPH (groundwater) concentration. The relationship is taken into account in the Spearman coefficient (α). 相似文献

Public awareness of soils contamination has increased in recent years due in part to the notoriety associated with the indiscriminate release, packaging, transporting and disposal of hazardous materials. In 1980, and again in 1982, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was responsible for designing, implementing and conducting environmental monitoring programs at Love Canal in Niagara Falls, New York, and in Dallas, Texas, that dealt with suspected contaminated soils. Both of these monitoring programs were conducted over a relatively short time with the collection and analysis of over 4000 soil samples. The methods employed by the Environmental Protection Agency for providing soil data that was scientifically valid and of defensible quality for each of these monitoring programs are presented. Also, methods for identifying data bias, its precision and its uncertainty are identified. 相似文献

Former battery factories have created environmental and health problems for years and the exposure to lead in surface soils has been underestimated. Nonetheless, the identification of lead contamination and its spatial distribution is crucial. The determination of heavy metals in soils can be performed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). However, alternative techniques such as X-ray fluorescence (XRF) have been used lately in environmental studies since measurements can be taken in the field in a prompt manner, despite its lower accuracy. In this study, a former battery factory site in Monterrey, Mexico, has been studied in order to detect lead contamination. Soil samples were assessed for contamination by using an analytical hybrid method that comprises both analytical techniques, namely, ICP-MS and XRF. Samples were taken in 215 locations and, after a simple homogenization process, they were analyzed by using a portable XRF device. Within those 215 sampling points, 25 samples were analyzed concurrently by using ICP-MS according to international sampling guidelines. Results obtained were adjusted in order to define an analytical hybrid method, which encompasses the advantages of each technique. An improved characterization was achieved by using the proposed analytical hybrid method since maps of lead distribution and calculated areas of concern showed better predictability. The combination of spectroscopic techniques is of great applicability for environmental agencies and decision makers. 相似文献

More than 2000 blood samples were collected at random from full-time middle school teachers in 9 cities of China and analyzed for lead concentration with strict quality assurance procedures. Questionnaries about the smoking habits, alcohol consumption, residence condition, and fuel used at home were filled out by each person, and information about traffic, and lead concentration in different areas of the environment was also collected as far as possible. The result showed that the geometric mean of blood lead levels of teachers in different cities was ranging between 59–82 g l–1 among them the lowest levels were found in Nanjing and the highest in Shanghai. The difference between the lowest and the highest value was only 23 g l–1. Comparing with the results of WHO/UNEP and CEC projects. The overall geometric average blood level in China is lower than in all the other countries except Japan. It indicates that the lead pollution in the general environment of China was not as severe as in the participating countries of WHO/UNEP and CEC projects. This may be attributed by the following factors: The less automobile triffic, the larger proportion of non-leaded gasoline used and the less canned food consumption. Factors influencing the lead levels in blood were also analyzed and the normal value (95% upper limit) of blood lead was assessed to be 160 g l–1. 相似文献

Passive air sampling for nitrogen dioxide (NO(2)) and select volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was conducted at 24 fire stations and a compliance monitoring site in Dallas, Texas, USA during summer 2006 and winter 2008. This ambient air monitoring network was established to assess intra-urban gradients of air pollutants to evaluate the impact of traffic and urban emissions on air quality. Ambient air monitoring and GIS data from spatially representative fire station sites were collected to assess spatial variability. Pairwise comparisons were conducted on the ambient data from the selected sites based on city section. These weeklong samples yielded NO(2) and benzene levels that were generally higher during the winter than the summer. With respect to the location within the city, the central section of Dallas was generally higher for NO(2) and benzene than north and south. Land use regression (LUR) results revealed spatial gradients in NO(2) and selected VOCs in the central and some northern areas. The process used to select spatially representative sites for air sampling and the results of analyses of coarse- and fine-scale spatial variability of air pollutants on a seasonal basis provide insights to guide future ambient air exposure studies in assessing intra-urban gradients and traffic impacts. 相似文献

Assessing depleted uranium (DU) contamination of soil, plants and earthworms at UK weapons testing sites 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Oliver IW Graham MC MacKenzie AB Ellam RM Farmer JG 《Journal of environmental monitoring : JEM》2007,9(7):740-748
Depleted uranium (DU) weapons testing programmes have been conducted at two locations within the UK. An investigation was therefore carried out to assess the extent of any environmental contamination arising from these test programmes using both alpha spectrometry and mass spectrometry techniques. Uranium isotopic signatures indicative of DU contamination were observed in soil, plant and earthworm samples collected in the immediate vicinity of test firing points and targets, but contamination was found to be localised to these areas. This paper demonstrates the superiority of the (235)U : (238)U ratio over the (234)U : (238)U ratio for identifying and quantifying DU contamination in environmental samples, and also describes the respective circumstances under which alpha spectrometry or mass spectrometry may be the more appropriate analytical tool. 相似文献

A base line study into the environmental quality of soils in the rural areas of the province of Zeeland, the Netherlands, was performed. The polder-landscape in this area was developed in a complex history of floodings and land-reclamation. Samples from 67 sites, at a density of roughly one per 25 km2, were analyzed for As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn in addition to a physicochemical characterization by pH(KCl), dry solids, organic matter, and clay content. At about 2/3 of the sites samples were taken at more than one depth. Fluoride and pesticides were determined in partly overlapping selections of 30 samples. Four land use classes were distinguished (arable land, grass land, orchards, uncultivated), and samples were labelled by region within the province. Data evaluation was aided by a recursive statistical approach, whereby statistical tests confirm and strengthen geochemical reasoning. Single- and multivariate statistics were used both as exploratory tools and as a measure of significance and relevance of conditions and processes. In general the environmental quality of the soils is satisfactory. Exceedence of the legal standards for natural background values at more than one site occurs for Cd, Cu, Hg and the pesticides DDT/DDE, dieldrin and HCH, at most by a factor of three. High levels of Hg appear related to arable land use; enhanced levels of Cu are found in orchards. High Cd levels primarily seem to follow a regional or geological pattern; yet, a relation with arable land use and clayey soils cannot be excluded. Pesticides are not detected in grass land, incidence is highest in orchards as well as in uncultivated areas. DDT levels appear to be generally inherited from the past. Variation in soil type as described by the macro physico-chemical characteristics is essential in explaining the variation in concentration level of the potential contaminants. Variations with depth also appear largely related to concurrent variation in soil properties. For As redox conditions and hydrological regime seem of importance, in addition to the geologic history. The influence of atmospheric input is inferred for Pb. The available data do not fully resolve the causes for the regional pattern that remains when the influences of soil type, geology, and land use have been taken into account. In addition to current concentration levels, the base line study offers general insight as to what degree variations in potential contaminants are of natural or anthropogenic origin. A succession of similar studies at suitable time intervals, each with a new selection of sampling sites, may constitute an evolving, flexible monitoring system. When putting up a monitoring system, authorities should weigh the advantages and disadvantages of a network composed of fixed sites against this alternative. 相似文献

Wild birds have frequently been found dead in their natural habitats, but little is known about what ecological stressors may impact health of wild populations. Here, we report the potentially harmful lead (Pb) levels in tissues along with necropsies on 69 individuals of cranes, raptors, and waterfowl found dead between 2000 and 2003 in Korea. In all samples diagnosed, trauma (n?=?22), severe emaciation (n?=?15), and infectious diseases (n?=?11) were identified. In the survey, injury with Pb shot or bullet fragments was associated with three of the deaths; one of three showed lesions suggestive of Pb poisoning in the tissues. Of 69 birds, 12 had >25 ppm dry wt. (equivalent to 8 ppm wet wt.) in liver or kidney, which is known to be a potentially lethal level of Pb in wild birds. Three individuals had hepatic Pb levels of 101.3 ppm (Whooper swan), 120.4 ppm (Great white-fronted goose), and 1,059 ppm (Mandarin duck), with evidence of Pb pellets in their gizzard. This study suggests that many birds examined may be suffering from excessive Pb exposure that may be of health concern with respect to a potential cause of their mortality. The need for additional research is heightened when considering that some migrants are classified as a globally protected species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. 相似文献

Prediction models for exchangeable soil lead, published earlier in this journal (Andra et al. 2010a), were developed using a suite of native lead (Pb) paint-contaminated residential soils from two US cities heavily populated with homes constructed prior to Pb ban in paints. In this study, we tested the feasibility and practical applications of these prediction models for developing a phytoremediation design using vetiver grass (Vetiveria zizanioides), a Pb-tolerant plant. The models were used to estimate the exchangeable fraction of Pb available for vetiver uptake in four lead-spiked soil types, both acidic and alkaline, with varying physico-chemical properties and that are different from those used to build the prediction models. Results indicate a strong correlation for predictable exchangeable Pb with the observed fraction and as well with total Pb accumulated by vetiver grass grown in these soils. The correlation coefficient for the predicted vs. observed exchangeable Pb with p < 0.001 was 0.999, 0.996, 0.949, and 0.998 in the Immokalee, Millhopper, Pahokee Muck, and Tobosa soil type, respectively. Similarly, the correlation coefficient for the predicted exchangeable Pb vs. accumulated Pb in vetiver grass with p?< 0.001 was 0.948, 0.983, 0.929, and 0.969 for each soil type, respectively. This study suggests that the success of a phytoremediation design could be assessed upfront by predicting the exchangeable Pb fraction in a given soil type based on its properties. This helps in modifying the soil conditions to enhance phytoextraction of Pb from contaminated soils. 相似文献

The recognition of the hazards to young children of low-level lead intoxication and the widespread distribution of lead in
the urban environment have resulted in massive federal, state, and local lead awareness and abatement programs. Two of the
most significant exposure routes of lead to young children are the soils and dusts found within the child's home. Most state
and federal lead abatement programs deal with lead-based paint contamination but often do not address the issue of soft-surface
contamination, such as that of carpets, furniture, and draperies. Carpets can be a reservoir of contaminated soils and dusts;
currently, there exists no standard method to test carpeted surfaces for lead contamination.
This paper describes a study that uses X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to test carpeted surfaces for lead contamination. XRF technology
is the standard technology used in lead-based paint testing and is known to be an accurate technique to test for lead in soils.
This study uses a controlled laboratory atmosphere to evaluate this technology; the objectives are to determine: (1) a lower
limit of detection for the instrument; and (2) whether soil loading levels can be differentiated by XRF using trace elements
also present in the soil. Results indicate that XRF can easily differentiate soil loading levels (g soil/m2 carpet). The lower limit of detection of soil lead concentration on the carpet is a function of both soil lead concentration
and soil loading; therefore, lead loading (mg Pb/m2) is a better indicator of detection limit than soil lead concentration. Lead loading detection levels from 108–258 mg Pb/m2 were obtained, as compared to a level of 10 000 mg/m2 (1 mg/cm2) for lead on painted surfaces as required by theLead-Based Paint Poisoning Prevention Act.
XRF technology has the potential to be a fast, inexpensive screening technique for the evaluation of lead contamination on
carpeted surfaces. 相似文献

Heavy metal concentration in soil was investigated at three sites with different topography (cut slope, flat and embankment) within the vicinity of Chengdu-Kunming railway in Sichuan, China. Surface soil was sampled at certain distances from the track at each site and was analyzed for Cu, Mn, Pb, Zn, Cd by atomic absorption spectrometry. Cu, Cd and Zn concentrations in some soil exceeded the thresholds for non-polluted soil following the soil quality standard set by the State Environmental Protection Agency of China. Compared to local background values, the highest enrichment factor values of Cu, Mn, Zn and Cd were 2.7, 3.4, 3.7 and 7.7, respectively, indicating a moderate or significant enrichment of these metals in soil closest to the railway. Pb showed little accumulation with the EF values generally nearer 1 at the chosen sites. Topography profile was found to influence metal levels and distribution in soil alongside railway. At the cut slope site, Mn, Zn, Cd showed the highest concentrations and the smallest dispersion distance of 2 m, while Cu showed further dispersion distance of 25 m due to a main Cu emission source, the head-over traction cable, being located higher than any other metal emission source (wheels and tracks). Heavy metal concentrations decreased conversely as compared to distance from the track, peak values occurring at locations closest to the tracks, whilst embankment site soil Cd concentrations peaked at distances of 25 m. Significant correlation was found amongst Mn, Cu, Zn and Cd, which indicates that these metals have the same anthropogenic origin there. Organic matter content had no significant correlation to the elements Mn, Cu and Zn, which implies relatively high mobility to those metals. 相似文献

Retrospective monitoring of soil contamination has been performed in the Czech Republic. This kind of monitoring is based on the comparison of the heavy metals content in soil samples taken during a systematic soil survey (1960–1970) and in samples taken at the present time. The anticipated high degree of soil pollution in the Czech Republic has not been proved. Most of the contaminated soils were found to be loaded just 20–35 years ago. Retrospective monitoring is considered to be an accelerating tool for determining the strategy of the systematic monitoring of soil contamination. This procedure stimulated the development of the multi-step system of soil loading limits. 相似文献

Twelve samples each of soil and ground water were collected from paddy-wheat, paddy-cotton, sugarcane fields and tube wells
from same or near by fields around Hisar, Haryana, India during 2002–2003 to monitor pesticide residues. Residues were estimated
by GC-ECD and GC-NPD systems equipped with capillary columns for organochlorine, synthetic pyrethroid and organophosphate
insecticides. In soil, HCH (0.002–0.051 μg g−1), DDT (0.001–0.066 μg g−1), endosulfan (0.002–0.039 μg g−1) and chlordane (0.0002–0.019 μg g−1) among organochlorines, cypermethrin (0.001–0.035 μg g−1) and fenvalerate (0.001–0.022 μg g−1) among synthetic pyrethroids and chlorpyriphos (0.002–0.172 μg g−1), malathion (0.002–0.008 μg g−1), quinalphos (0.001–0.010 μg g−1) among organophosphates were detected. Dominant contaminants were DDT, cypermethrin and chlorpyriphos from the respective
groups. In water samples, HCH, DDT, endosulfan and cypermethrin residues were observed frequently. Only chlorpyriphos among
organophosphates was detected in 10 samples. On consideration of tube well water for drinking purpose, about 80% samples were
found to contain residues above the regulatory limits. 相似文献

The rehabilitation of contaminated sites is becoming a rising preoccupation which requires the knowledge of their past before realization of a suitable remediation. Physicochemical analysis must be realized jointly with the use of bioindicator organisms, which, owing to their bioaccumulation capacities, will reveal the bioavailability of metals in soils. Among terrestrial invertebrates, gastropods like Helix aspersa aspersa possess an important organotropism for metals in their digestive gland and they can be used in active biomonitoring. During in situ monitoring, two parameters are tested: growth and accumulation of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Cd, Ni, Pb, and Cr in viscera of snails. Environmental conditions, like humidity or autochthonous vegetation, are able to modify growth or bioaccumulation. In order to remove the variation of these factors, microcosms previously used must be improved: they were equipped with porous candles, which continually humidify soil. Concerning vegetation, an experimental plan was realized to determine the combination of food with the best compromise between growth and bioaccumulation: the combination clover-snail feed was chosen. Thus, in situ, the experimental environment will be repeated in all investigated sites and used to allow follow up of their contamination levels and intercomparison between different sites. 相似文献

An investigation was carried out to monitor Pb and Cd contamination in grazing land located near a highway. Environmental media at different distances fromhighway (soil, grass, water, cow's forage, fertilizer, manure and milk samples) were collected from three samplinglocations. Soil and grass were characterized by high metalmobility (soil with Pb: 5.25±0.71–14.59±1.17 mgkg-1, dry mass and Cd: 0.038–0.33±0.04 mg kg-1, dry mass and grass with Pb: 0.76±0.05–6.62±0.18 mg kg-1, dry mass and Cd: 0.17±0.01–0.73±0.09 mg kg-1, dry mass). One-way analysis of variane (ANOVA) was applied to find out the correlation between metal (total and bioavailable) concentrationsin the soil and the distance from roadside. In most cases, the finding showed that plants growing nearer to the highway are usually exposed to more heavy metal accumulations than those awayfrom the highway. In addition, a correlation was established between plant available metal concentrations and plant metaluptake concentrations.Analysis of fertilizer and manure showed considerable amountof metals (fertilizer with Pb: 1.53±0.06 mg kg-1 andCd: 0.038 mg kg-1 and manure with Pb: 2.55–3.34 mgkg-1 and Cd: 0.14–0.31 mg kg-1). Long termsimultaneous application of fertilizer and manure on thecommercial farm showed higher metal accumulation in the soiland plants than those of co-operative farm Considerableconcentrations of metals (Pb: 1.60–2.94 mg kg-1 andCd: 0.025–0.19 mg kg-1) were observed in fodder. The finding clearly demonstrated that there are seasonalvariation in total daily metal intake by individual cow (Pb:109.37 mg day-1 (dry), 273.47 mg day-1 (rainy) andCd: 2.02 mg day-1 (dry), 19.62 mg day-1 (rainy)).The provisional tolerable weekly intake of heavy metals incows is 390 g Pb and 28 g Cd per kg bodyweight in the rainy season and 156 g Pb and 2 gCd per kg body weight in the dry season. The levels of metals (Pb: 0.014 mg L-1 and Cd: not detectable) and bio-transferfactor (10-5–10-4) in raw milk were found to be well below the Codex Alimentarius Commissions Draft (1997). Ouranalysis revealed that improvements on farm management give significant reduction in elevated levels of Pb and Cdin soil and plants, and however leads to minimize the amountof Pb and Cd in consumed milk. 相似文献

Soil degradation has caused various problems on the planet. Human disturbance and land use changes always negatively affect soil quality. In this study, we used a modified soil quality index (SQI) to assess soil quality under differing degrees of human disturbance and land use. The alpine grasslands were studied at different levels of degradation [i.e., severely degraded grassland, heavily degraded grassland, moderately degraded grassland, and non-degraded grassland (NDG)] in a case study conducted in Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) to test the feasibility of using the SQI. Fifteen chemical, physical, and biological soil parameters were measured in each type of grassland. Significant variations in SQI were found across the different types of grasslands according to severity of human disturbance and changes in land use. Urease, the ratio of microbial biomass nitrogen to total nitrogen, proteinase, and soil organic carbon were found to be the most important indicators for assessing soil quality. NDG had a higher SQI than the other three types of grasslands. It was concluded that SQI is effective for assessing the soil quality of alpine grasslands in the QTP. The intensity of human disturbance had a negative effect on soil quality in the QTP. 相似文献

In this study, coupled Pb concentration/Pb isotope data were used to evaluate the effect of a shooting range (operational for over 30 years) on Pb contamination of adjacent agricultural soils and the associated environmental risks. Lead was mainly concentrated in the arable layer of the contaminated agricultural soils at total concentrations ranging from 573 to 694 mg kg???1. Isotopic analyses (206Pb/207Pb) proved that Pb originated predominantly from the currently used pellets. Chemical fractionation analyses showed that Pb was mainly associated with the reducible fraction of the contaminated soil, which is in accordance with its predominant soil phases (PbO, PbCO3). The 0.05 M EDTA extraction showed that up to 62% of total Pb from the contaminated site is potentially mobilizable. Furthermore, Pb concentrations obtained from the synthetic precipitation leaching procedure extraction exceeded the regulatory limit set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency for drinking water. Ion exchange resin bags showed to be inefficient for determining the vertical distribution of free Pb2?+? throughout the soil profile. Increased Pb concentrations were found in the biomass of spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) sampled at the studied site and two possible pathways of Pb uptake have been identified: (1) through passive diffusion-driven uptake by roots and (2) especially through atmospheric deposition, which was also proved by analyses of a bioindicator species (bryophyte Hypnum cupressiforme Hedw.). This study showed that shooting ranges can present an important source of Pb contamination of agricultural soils located in their close vicinity. 相似文献

Assessing soil quality indicator under different land use and soil erosion using multivariate statistical techniques 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Kazem Nosrati 《Environmental monitoring and assessment》2013,185(4):2895-2907
Soil degradation associated with soil erosion and land use is a critical problem in Iran and there is little or insufficient scientific information in assessing soil quality indicator. In this study, factor analysis (FA) and discriminant analysis (DA) were used to identify the most sensitive indicators of soil quality for evaluating land use and soil erosion within the Hiv catchment in Iran and subsequently compare soil quality assessment using expert opinion based on soil surface factors (SSF) form of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) method. Therefore, 19 soil physical, chemical, and biochemical properties were measured from 56 different sampling sites covering three land use/soil erosion categories (rangeland/surface erosion, orchard/surface erosion, and rangeland/stream bank erosion). FA identified four factors that explained for 82 % of the variation in soil properties. Three factors showed significant differences among the three land use/soil erosion categories. The results indicated that based upon backward-mode DA, dehydrogenase, silt, and manganese allowed more than 80 % of the samples to be correctly assigned to their land use and erosional status. Canonical scores of discriminant functions were significantly correlated to the six soil surface indices derived of BLM method. Stepwise linear regression revealed that soil surface indices: soil movement, surface litter, pedestalling, and sum of SSF were also positively related to the dehydrogenase and silt. This suggests that dehydrogenase and silt are most sensitive to land use and soil erosion. 相似文献
