Coral reef lagoons have generally been regarded as sinks for organic matter exported from more productive reef front and reef flat zones. The object of this study was to examine the importance of detritus as a carbon source for benthic communities in the lagoon at Davies Reef, central Great Barrier Reef. We report the results of seasonal measurements, taken in 1986, of bacterial numbers and production, protozoan numbers, community primary production and respiration in the sediments of Davies Reef lagoon. Deposition rates of organic matter in the lagoon were also measured. Deposition rates (±1 SE) of carbon ranged from 9.2 (±1.5) to 140.7 (±10.3) mg Cm-2d-1. Deposition rates were highest in winter and spring, lowest in summer. Rates of bacterial production ranged from 4.7 (±0.2) pmol thymidine incorporated g-1 dry wt (DW) h-1 in winter to 23.5 (±1.0) pmol thymidine incorporated g-1 DW h-1 in spring. The number of ciliates ranged from 65 (±10) to 356 (±50) cm-3 through the year and the number of large (20 m) flagellates from 38 (±7) to 108 (±16) cm-3. There were no clear relationships between the sediment organic content, detrital input or temperature and the rates of bacterial processes, community metabolism or the standing stocks of microbes in the lagoon. The relative significance of detritus and in situ primary production as sources of carbon in the lagoon varied with season. In summer and autumn, detritus was less important than primary production as a source of carbon (4 to 27% of total carbon input). In winter and spring, detritus input became more significant in supply of carbon to the sediments (32 to 67% of the total carbon input). The lagoon does not simply act as a sink for carbon exported from the reef flat. We calculate that only 5% of the net reef flat primary production reached lagoon sediments in summer, but nearly 40% in winter.  相似文献

A technique for measuring rates of RNA and DNA synthesis in sedimentary microbial communities has been adapted from methods developed for marine and freshwater microplankton research. The procedure measures the uptake, incorporation and turnover of exogenous [2, 3H]-adenine by benthic microbial populations. With minor modification, it is applicable to a wide range of sediment types. Measurement of nucleic acid synthesis rates are reported from selected benthic marine environments, including coral reef sediments (Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii), intertidal beach sands (Oahu and southern California) and California borderland basin sediment (San Pedro Basin), and comparisons are made to selected water-column microbial communities. Biomass-specific rates of nucleic acid synthesis in sediment microbial communities were comparable to those observed in water-column assemblages (i.e., 0.02 to 2.0 pmol deoxyadenine incorporated into DNA [ng ATP]-1 h-1 and 0.2 to 8.9 pmol adenine incorporated into RNA [ng ATP]-1 h-1). DNA synthesis rates were used to calculate carbon production estimates ranging from 2 g C cm-3 h-1 in San Pedro Basin sediment (880 m water depth) to 807 g C cm-3 h-1 in coral reef sediment from the Kaneohe Bay. Microbial community specific growth rate, (d-1), estimated from DNA synthesis rates in surface sediments ranged from 0.1 in San Pedro Basin to 4.2 in Scripps Beach (La Jolla, California) intertidal sand.  相似文献

Variations in number and biomass of benthic bacteria were examined in the surface sediments of a Mediterranean seagrass bed [Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile] in the Gulf of Marconi (northwestern Mediterranean Sea) from 1990 to 1991. The annual dynamics of benthic bacterial density and biomass were compared to changes in elemental (organic C and total N) and biochemical (lipids, proteins, carbohydrates) composition of sediment organic matter, as well as to microphytobenthic biomass, dissolved inorganic nutrients and ATP. Bacterial densities exhibited marked seasonal variations (5.12 to 322.7x108 cells g-1 sediment dry wt) with highest values in late spring. Bacterial standing stocks (15.8 to 882.33 g C g-1 of sediment dry wt) were high. Bacterial biomass did not correlate with organic C, total N or to specific biochemical components, but correlated significantly with chlorophyll a, ATP and porewater phosphate concentrations. There is evidence that benthic bacteria were responding to variations of algal biomass. Bacterial biomass accounted, on average, for 30% of total living carbon (calculated on the basis of the ATP concentrations) and 8.4% of total organic carbon.  相似文献

Production and doubling times of the bacterial populations in the water around and over the reefs at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef were measured during summer and winter, 1982 and 1983. Bacterial productivity, determined from the rate of tritiated thymidine incorporation into DNA, was high over the reef flats and a Thalassia hemprichii sand flat (28 to 58 g Cl-1 d-1). Bacterial growth rates increased during the day and fell at night over the reef flats and seagrass bed. Growth rates were slower over the reef front and in open water. Doubling times ranged from about 2 d in the open water to about 3 h over the reef flat in summer. As numbers did not increase, grazing was probably intense on the reef flats. Growth rates were much slower in winter. The main source of organic nutrient used by the bacteria was probably mucus released following photosynthesis in the corals. The cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. was sometimes very numerous, especially in summer when 2×108 cells l-1 were recorded in one water mass. The number of bacteria was also very high in summer, with values ranging from 1×109 to 2.5×109l-1.  相似文献

Relative rates of the anaerobic decomposition of organic matter in the upper 10 cm of sediment from two stations in central Long Island Sound, USA, were compared. Sediment samples from discrete depth intervas were incubated anoxically and changes in SO 4 = , NH 4 + , bacterial numbers, extractable adenosine triphosphate (ATP), organic matter, and organic carbon were measured as a function of time and temperature. At both stations (15 and 34 m water-depths, respectively), the calculated rates of SO 4 = reduction and NH 4 + production decreased exponentially (approximately) with depth below the sediment-water interface. Over the same depth interval, ATP concentrations dropped by a factor of 6 to 7 and bacterial numbers were lower by a factor of 2 to 3. These decreases in SO 4 = reduction, NH 4 + production, bacterial numbers, and ATP, reflect a change in the physiological state of microbial populations with depth in the sediment and are consistent with the conclusions that the quantity of easily utilizable organic matter changes rapidly below the sediment surface and that food limitation controls the basic depth distribution of microbial activity. The average rates of SO 4 = reduction, 29 to 39 mM year-1 (22°C), in the top 10 cm are similar at both stations studied here, as well as at an additional station from a previous study. In contrast, average NH 4 + production differs by a factor of 2 at the two stations, reflecting differences in the C:N ratio of the organic matter supplied to the sediment surface and differences in particle reworking by macrofauna at each site. The apparent activation energy of SO 4 = reduction was 19±1 kcal mole-1 and that of NH 4 + production, 18±3 kcal mole-1. The overall quantity of carbon required to support the calculated average SO 4 = reduction rate in the top 10 cm is 23 g C m-2 year-1 and represents 36% of all the carbon available to the benthos annually and 11% of the net primary production in the water column. Directly measured fluxes of NH 4 + from sediments to overlying water at both stations agree well with those predicted from production rates obtained by the incubation techniques.  相似文献

Nitrification rates, measured in different sediment types from Danish waters, are in the range of 0.3 to 1.4 mmol NO 3 - m-2 d-1. There is no signification between sandy and muddy sediments, nor between shallow and deeper stations. The extent of nitrification is probably limited to the zone of oxygen penetration, 1.5 to 5.5 mm. There are, however, nitrifying bacteria located in the anoxic sediment layers. There relative numbers were found by measuring the nitrification potential of the sediment. These potential rates (22°C) can also be used to calculate actual rates of nitrification, by adjusting to in situ temperature and oxygen penetration. These calculated rates agree with the actual measured rates of nitrification for a wide range of sediment types and may be used for the estimation of actual nitrification rates. Nitrate flux out from the sediment/water interface is in the range of 0 to 0.7 mmol NO 3 - m-2 d-1. There is no correlation between concentration gradients of nitrate across the sediment/water interface and the measured flux of nitrate. Approximately 50% of nitrate production is released to the water column. The remainder (0 to 0.35 mmol N m-2 d-1) may have been denitrified.  相似文献

Sediment reworking rates of Axiothella rubrocincta (Johnson, 1901) (Polychaeta: Maldanidae) were measured in situ in Tomales Bay, California (USA), from August, 1969 through July, 1970. On the average, each adult worm (approximate fresh weight=1 g) reworks about 5 g dry sediment d-1 at a mean temperature of 13.4°C and a mean salinity of 31.8.Reworking rates are positively correlated with temperature and salinity, and negatively with sediment organic carbon, sedimentation rates and grain size. An inverse correlation exists between sediment reworking rates (g dry sediment g-1 wet wt of worm d-1) and g wet weight of worm. Sediment parameters deseribing unworked sediments are not significantly different from those for fecal sediments. Although these data suggest this species to be a non-selective deposit-feeder, it is more likely that it is faculatively selective.  相似文献

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) measurements are used to determine vertical and seasonal distributions of microorganisms and meiofauna in sediments from a 14 m-deep mud bottom in central Long Island Sound on 12 sampling dates from April 1975 to October 1976. Below the topmost 1 cm of sediment, ATP measurements can be useful in estimating and comparing standing stocks of microorganisms and meiofauna. In the top 1 cm, however, large quantities of newly settled bivalves (Yoldia limatula, Nucula annulata, and Mulinia lateralis) and juvenile polychaetes (Owenia fusiformis) in summer and fall months account for total ATP concentrations. The ATP content of individual meiofauna ranges from 1.97 ng individual copepod nauplius-1 to 190.7±60 ng individual M. lateralis -1. In general, the total ATP content of individual polychaetes and bivalves is much higher than that of individuals of other groups. However, on a mg ATP per g wet or dry tissue basis, the ATP content of micro- and meiofaunal taxa are not significantly different. In addition to providing a means for comparing micro- and meiofaunal standing stocks, ATP measurements permit examination of the relative contribution of different meiofauna to the total living biomass of meiofauna in sediments. Total sediment ATP concentrations are greatest in the top 1 cm at all seasons, and decrease with increasing depth in the sediment. Annual concentrations in the topmost centimeter average 4.22 g g dry sediment-1 and range seasonally from 1.09 to 7.64 g g dry sediment-1. At a depth of 10 cm, values average 0.16 and range from 0.019 to 0.35 g g dry sediment-1. High ATP concentrations in surface sediment reflect high concentrations of microorganisms and meiofauna at the sediment-water interface. The top 2 cm of sediment contain 71% of all meiofauna, with 41% occurring in the topmost cm. In general, densities are lowest in the winter and highest during the spring and summer, averaging 490 individuals 10 cm-2, and varying from 87 to 1366 individuals 10 cm-2. Because of wide variation in recruitment patterns of the benthos in Long Island Sound, the extremes of the range in meiofaunal densities can be observed in the same month in two different years. In order to monitor and compare standing stocks of organisms less than 1 mm in size in sediments, the ATP assay can save hours of processing time compared with alternate methods such as direct counts.  相似文献

Diurnal variation of nitrogen cycling in coastal, marine sediments   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
A closed chamber technique was developed to determine the emission of microbially produced N2O from an estuarine sediment. A diurnal variation was observed; maximum emissions of 0.4 to 4.0 mol N2O–N m-2 h-1 were recorded at night whereas the rates were low or even negative, -0.4 to 0.4 mol N2O–N m-2 h-1, during the day. The bacterial denitrification located in the uppermost centimeter was apparently the major source of the emitted N2O. The diurnal emission pattern was thus inversely related to the O2 availability at the sediment surface; in the dark, the lack of O2 production by benthic photosynthesis allowed the denitrification to occur closer to the sediment-water interface and was likely to enhance the release of N2O to the water. The daily averages for the emission were about 40 mol N2O–N m-2 d-1 for three investigation periods in autumn (November), winter (February) and spring (April), whereas no significant emission was recorded in the NO 3 - -depleted sediment in early summer (June). In this estuary, the N2O emissions from the sediment were significant contributions to the overall release of N2O to the atmosphere.  相似文献

Diurnal variations occurred in bacterial growth rates in the sediment and water column associated with seagrass (mainly Zostera capricorni Aschers) beds in Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia. Studies were carried out in March and June 1981. Cell production rates increased by 5- to 10-fold during the morning and decreased during the afternoon. No nocturnal variation was observed. Daily bacterial cell production rate in the aerobic zones of the seagrass bed was estimated to be 43 mg C m-2. A minimum of 100 mg C m-2 d-1 would be required to support the bacterial production. This represents about 10% of net primary production. The incorporation of tritiated thymidine into DNA was used to measure bacterial growth. The validity of the method is discussed.  相似文献

Microheterotrophic dissolved free amino acid (DFAA) utilization, and microbial community and bacterial community carbon production and growth were studied using 3H-labeled organics as tracers in marine surface-film and subsurface (10 cm) waters off Baja California in November 1983. DFAA utilization was generally more rapid during the day (0.14 to 0.38 nM h-1) than at night (0.04 to 0.14 nM h-1) in surface-film and subsurface waters, but the percent of utilized amino acid which was respired was always greater during the night (22 to 57%) compared to the day (14 to 18%). Utilization of DFAA-carbon was estimated to range from 0.3 to 5.3 g C l-1 d-1 for all stations studied. In six of the 8 samples examined, the percentage of microbial carbon accounted for by the bacterial component of the population (1.4 to 5.9%) was strikingly similar to the percentage of microbial carbon production accounted for by bacterial carbon production (1.9 to 5.1%). In all of these six samples, total microbial specific-growth rates and bacterial specific-growth rates were approximately equivalent (0.9 to 2.2 d-1 for the microbial community; 0.7 to 1.9 d-1 for bacteria). The two exceptions were samples apparently influenced by transient flagellate populations migrating into the surface or subsurface waters at night. These observations support the conclusion that surface films contain unique and highly active microbial populations.  相似文献

Bacterial productivity in sandy sediments on reef flats at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef was determined from the rate of incorporation of tritiated thymidine into DNA. The study was conducted during January 1982 and July 1983. A small diurnal increase occurred in sediments having a dense population of microalgae. Bacterial production was 120 to 370 mg C m-2 d-1 in summer on reef flats, which was equivalent to 30–40% of primary production by benthic microalgae. In winter, rates of primary production by benthic microalgae and secondary production by bacteria were about one-half to one-fifth of those in summer. There was much variation in production, due to patchiness in the distribution of benthic microbes, especially microalgae. Doubling times for the bacteria in surface sediment were 1 to 2 d in summer and 4 to 16 d in winter on the reef flats. These high productivity values for bacteria indicated that a net input of organic matter to the sediment was needed to support the growth of bacteria. Sediment bacteria thus have a very important role in transforming organic matter on the reef flats. Grazing by Holothuria atra depressed both primary production and bacterial production. It was estimated that these holothurians ate about 10 to 40% of bacterial carbon produced each day in summer, and thus have an important role in the carbon cycle. Harpacticoid copepods were numerically important components of the benthic meiofaunal community and probably had a significant impact on bacterial density as grazers.  相似文献

A mooring system consisting of an in situ fluorometer at a depth of 50 m and a time-series sediment trap at a depth of 110 m was deployed at the sediment trap site (70°11.536'S; 24°18.679'E; water depth: 300 m) in Breid Bay, Antarctica in austral summer from 28 December 1985 to 13 February 1986. Sinking particles, consisting of diatoms (mainly Thalassiosira antarctica), were analyzed for organic materials, stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes. Vertical fluxes of organic carbon and nitrogen were determined to be within the ranges of 12.3 to 116 mg C m-2 d-1 and 1.79 to 15.4 mg N m-2 d-1, respectively, with maxima in the middle of January 1986, after which time the organic carbon and nitrogen fluxes tended to decrease with a steep gradient. High values of 13C were found in the organic matter of the sinking particles collected before the middle of January, indicating that the organic matter was derived from the diatoms in the logarithmic phase of their growth. Increased abundance of glucose was found in the water-extractable carbohydrate, which was one of the sinking particles collected in the middle of January. This fact clearly indicated that the diatoms were no longer in the growth phase but rather in the stationary phase, because reserved glucan as well as various cellular organic materials were reportedly accumulated within the algal cells in the stationary phase. Fifteen species of protein amino acids with trace amounts of -alanine, -aminobutyric acid and ornithine were found in the sinking particles upon acid hydrolysis, but the amino acid composition of these samples had not been affected much by biological agents. The essential amino acid index was calculated for the sinking particles collected in the course of the sediment trap experiment. The indices obtained indicated that the sinking particles collected in Breid Bay were more ecologically significant than the sinking and suspended particles from deep waters.  相似文献

Sinking rates of the embryos of Euphausia superba were measured during development in the laboratory at Palmer Station. Antarctic Peninsula, during austral summer 1982. Two densities of seawater were used in these experiments; the lower density (1.027 g cm-3) is characteristic of the upper 300 m of the water column, the higher (1.029 g cm-3) is characteristic of the deeper circumpolar deep water. During development, the eggs sank at an initial average rate of 175 m d-1, declining to 51 m d-1 during the gastrula to early limb bud stages and increasing before hatching to near initial rates. The larvae hatched within 6 d. We predict that the majority of the embryos of E. superba should hatch at a depth of about 850 m.  相似文献

Effect of algal bloom deposition on sediment respiration and fluxes   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Using sediment cores collected in November 1989 from Aarhus Bight, Denmark, the fluxes of O2, CO2 (total CO2), NH 4 + , NO 3 +NO 2 and DON (dissolved organic nitrogen) across the sediment-water interface were followed for 20 d in an experimental continous flow system. On day 7, phytoplankton was added to the sediment surface, to see the result of simulated algal bloom sedimentation. Benthic O2 consumption and CO2 efflux, 38 to 41 mmol O2 m-2 d-1 and 25 to 30 mmol CO2 m-2 d-1, respectively, immediately increased by 39% and 100% after the algal addition, but gradually declined to the orginal level. Fluxes of NH 4 + (1.0 to 1.2 mmol m-2 d-1) and DON (0.3 to 0.9 mmol m-2 d-1) increased due to the organic substrate addition. NH 4 + and NO 3 flux changed direction, becoming an efflux and influx, respectively, for a few days and a large amount of DON (max. rate 4.0 mmol m-2 d-1) was immediately produced either by bacterial hydrolytic activity or from autolysis of the algae. DON was the most significant nitrogen component in pore water and in terms of N-flux from sediment. A temporary stimulation of anaerobic respiration processes (sulfate reduction and denitrification) and a decrease in nitrification were indicated. After the effect of the organic addition had declined, the fluxes gradually reverted to the original rates. The halflife of the added algal material, of which 20 to 30% was very labile, was estimated to be 2 to 3 wk.  相似文献

Samples of sediments from Australian seagrass (Zostera capricorni Aschers.) beds were taken in June to August 1983 (for15N experiments) and November 1982 to January 1983 (14N experiments). The ammonium pool turned-over every 0.4 to 0.8 d, as determined with a15N isotope-dilution technique. The ammonium pool in subtidal bare areas turned-over two to three times more slowly than in adjacent seagrass beds. Gross rates ofin situ ammonium regeneration equalled those of utilization, and ranged from 0.04 to 0.35 mol cm-3 d-1, or from 50 to 490 mg N m-2 d-1 over the upper 10 cm of the sediment. The potential rate of glycine utilization, measured with a large excess of glycine added to anaerobic incubations, ranged from 0.21 to 0.39mol cm-3 d-1, butin situ rates were probably much lower. Between 35 and 65% of added15N-glycine was deaminated over 12 h, and the remainder was most likely assimilated by microbes. Evidence for the seagrasses taking up glycine was equivocal, owing to the rapid deamination of the amino acid and the likelihood that they assimilated the labelled ammonium produced from the glycine.  相似文献

In Bermuda, stromatolitoid microbial nodules are found in dense groups in seagrass beds and on subtidal sandy or rocky bottoms. They develop between January and the beginning of August and may reach 15 cm in diameter and 6 cm in height. Nodules grow on top of the sediment surface and consist of convex interwoven mats of the cyanobacterium Phormidium corium and fine sediment particles trapped in these mats. Nodules were studied in the field and laboratory (in 1989–1992) with respect to their structure, microbial community, sediment chemistry and associated meiofauna. Vertical profiles taken with microelectrodes showed steep gradients of oxygen and sulfide. While free oxygen was only detected in the upper 2 mm, the sulfide concentrations increased with depth and reached maximal 1250 moll-1 inside the nodules. On the basis of microscopic observations and sediment chemistry, vertical sections through a nodule reveal four distinct layers: (A) an oxic green surface layer of growing cyanobacteria mats, (B) an anoxic yellow-white laminated layer of sediment particles, mucus and unpigmented cyanobacteria sheaths, (C) an anoxic sulfidic (sulfide <50 moll-1) interface where colour changes from yellow to gray and (D) an anoxic sulfidic (sulfide can increase to 1250 moll-1) gray core composed of sediment and decomposing cyanobacteria. The following meiofauna taxa were found in the nodules: Ciliata, Turbellaria, Gnathostomulida, Gastrotricha, Nematoda, Kinorhyncha, Polychaeta, Ostracoda and Harpacticoida. The distribution of the meiofauna was significantly different (p<0.05) within the four layers. The highest density of individuals was found in the sulfidic interface and core. Nematodes represented the dominant group in general. Thiobiotic organisms, such as the Gnathostomulida, Solenofilomorphidae, and Stilbonematinae were primarily found in the anoxic sulfidic layers of the nodules.  相似文献

Rates of sulfate reduction were measured during the spring dry and summer wet seasons of 1992 in shallow coastal sediments of the central Great Barrier Reef lagoon. In the dry season, sulfate reduction rates, integrated to 18–20 cm depth, ranged from 23.8 to 30.8 mmol S m-2 d-1. In the wet season, heavy monsoonal rains and wind-induced waves caused severe disturbance of sediments leading to less anoxic conditions, and to a 2- to 3-fold decline in rates of sulfate reduction (10.2 to 12.8 mmol S m-2 d-1). The percentage of reduced 35S recovered as acid-volatile sulfide (% AVSred) ranged from 15.8 to 44.9% in spring, and was significantly reduced at each station in summer (range 14.5 to 31.4%). An analysis of variance indicated that seasonality accounted for 31.5% of the total variance in total rates of sulfate reduction, with only 7.5% of the variance accounted for by depth into the sediment; there were no station differences. In both seasons, there were no clear patterns in the proportion of radiolabel incorporated into the AVS and chromium-reducible sulfur (CRS) pools with depth into the sediment. These results are contrary to the seasonal patterns and pathways of sulfate reduction in temperate coastal sediments.  相似文献

The response of benthos to sedimentation of the spring phytoplankton bloom in the Kiel Bight (Western Baltic Sea) is described in terms of biomass (ATP) and activity (heat production and ETS-activity). Input of the bloom (11.5 g C m-2) over a period from March 25 to April 19, 1980 to the sediment surface was in the form of cells and fresh phytodetritus as indicated by low C/N ratios (7) and high energy charge values (0.78). Benthic microbial activity was immediately stimulated by this input as heat production doubled and the activity of ETS tripled over winter values within 12 d in the absence of a significant increase in ambient temperature. A comparison of the two activity parameters suggests that anaerobic metabolism is more important during the winter (February and March) than after input of the bloom. Meiofauna was not able to take part in the first activity outburst. Benthic ATP-biomass (excluding macrofauna) doubled in late April due to microbial production, and doubled again in early May when meiofauna started reproductive activity. For macrofauna a general statement was not possible, although the sediment surface feeder Macoma baltica commenced a build up of glycogen and lipid resources immediately following bloom input whereas Nephtys ciliata, feeding on sediment and small macrofauna, showed a less pronounced and delayed effect from this input. An energy budget based on heat production measurements was calculated. A daily heat loss of the benthic community of 21.7 KJ m-2 d-1 (35.5 KJ m-2 d-1) was found, when a depth of 3 cm sediment (5 cm) was assumed. Heat production of macrofauna contributed less than 5% of this activity. The input of the bloom was burned within 21 (13) d. Preliminary estimations for an annual budget suggest that the vertical transport of particulate organic matter via sedimentation can only explain 25% (15%) of the benthic activity in the shallow water ecosystem of the Kiel Bight. This indicates the presence of other sources of organic carbon such as benthic primary production or other transport processes providing carbon to the sediments.Publication No. 384 of the Joint Research Program of Kiel University (Sonderforschungsbereich 95)  相似文献

The microbial community structures of two mesophilic anaerobic chemostats, one fed with glucose, the other with starch as sole carbon sources, were studied at various dilution rates (0.05–0.25 d–1 for glucose and 0.025–0.1 d–1 for starch) during two years continuous operation. In the glucose-fed chemostat, the aceticlastic methanogen Methanosaeta spp. and hydrogenotrophic methanogen Methanoculleus spp. predominated at low dilution rates, whereas Methanosaeta spp. and the hydrogenotrophic Methanobacterium spp. predominated together when dilution rates were greater than 0.1 d–1. Bacteria affiliated with the phyla Bacteroidetes, Spirochaetes, and Actinobacteria predominated at dilution rates of 0.05, 0.1, and 0.15 d–1, respectively, while Firmicutes predominated at higher dilution rates (0.2 and 0.25 d–1). In the starch-fed chemostat, the aceticlastic and hydrogenotrophic methanogens coexisted at all dilution rates. Although bacteria belonging to only two phyla were mainly responsible for starch degradation (Spirochaetes at the dilution rate of 0.08 d–1 and Firmicutes at other dilution rates), different bacterial genera were identified at different dilution rates. With the exception of Archaea in the glucose-fed chemostat, the band patterns revealed by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of the microbial communities in the two chemostats displayed marked changes during long-term operation at a constant dilution rate. The bacterial community changed with changes in the dilution rate, and was erratic during longterm operation in both glucose-fed and starch-fed chemostats.  相似文献
