Newly settled juvenile ascidians were transplanted into shaded and unshaded sites at two subtidal depths to test the hypothesis that photonegative settlement behavior enhances juvenile survival. Silt, filamentous algae and grazing gastropods (Margarites pupillus) were identified as sources of mortality associated primarily with non-cryptic microhabitats. Silt inflicted heavy mortality on all six species tested. Algal overgrowth was important in shallow water, where it increased mortality and depressed growth rates over a 14-d period. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that gastropods can remove juvenile ascidians from the substratum. The sources of post-settlement mortality investigated may help determine distributional patterns of ascidians in the San Juan Islands, Washington, USA, and may also represent selective pressures that maintain negative phototaxis in the behavioral repertoires of ascidian tadpoles. 相似文献

Larval settlement in the marine polychaete Hydroides elegans (Haswell) is induced by certain bacteria in marine biofilms. The exact nature of the settlement cue that larvae of H. elegans receive from these bacteria remains unknown. In this study, we revealed some properties of the bacterially derived larval
settlement cue by investigating the larval settlement inductive activity of two bacterial strains after various treatments.
These two bacterial strains, Roseobacter sp. and an α-subclass Proteobacteria, are highly inductive to larval settlement of H. elegans. The larvae responded similarly to Roseobacter and Proteobacteria in all the larval settlement bioassays, suggesting that the larval settlement-inducing substances produced by these bacteria
may share common characteristics. First of all, the larvae did not settle in the seawater conditioned by the bacteria attached
as a film or by the bacteria that were freely suspended in seawater. The results suggest that the putative larval settlement
cue is not released into seawater and, therefore, should be associated with the surface of the bacteria. Secondly, formaldehyde
treatment entirely eliminated the larval settlement induction activity of the bacterial films, and streptomycin treatment
reduced the percentage of larval settlement on the bacterial films in a concentration-dependent manner. Since both treatments
can kill bacteria with little damage to the surface chemistry of bacterial cells, the decline in larval settlement is suggested
be due to a reduction of the viable bacterial population in the bacterial films. In fact, the reduction of larval settlement
in the streptomycin treatments coincided with the decrease in viable bacterial populations in broth cultures containing respective
concentrations of streptomycin. These results suggest that the viability of Roseobacter and Proteobacteria is important to their settlement induction effect. Since the larval settlement induction activity of the bacterial strains
appears to correlate with their viability, we suggest that the putative larval settlement cue is derived from a metabolic
pathway in the bacteria and that the cue is exported to and concentrated at the extracellular polymer matrix of the bacterial
cell, at which the larvae establish contact with the bacteria. The larval settlement cue may be highly susceptible to degradation
so that a metabolically active bacterial film is needed to maintain the putative cue at a concentration that surpasses the
threshold for induction of larval settlement.

It is widely documented that in Bonellia viridis Rolando (Echiura), the larvae settle on the proboscis of the adult female and differentiate into males. This study shows that although settlement on the proboscis is preferred, the larvae can also settle on the body trunk of the adult and differentiate into males. Aqueous extracts of homogenized trunk tissues are as effective as those of proboscis tissues in masculinizing the larvae. The natural secretion of the female body trunk, which is produced when the worm is disturbed, has potent masculinizing properties. The preferential settlement on the probiscis may not result from a different chemical nature of the substratum. 相似文献

A series of pot experiments with Alternanthera philoxeroides, Typha latifolia, Sagittaria sagittifolia and Phragmites communis were conducted to assess the phosphorus depletion effect in the rhizosphere. The ratio of root to shoot, root morphology, phosphorus uptake efficiency and phosphorus utilization efficiency were analyzed. An obvious variation in phosphorus concentrations between the rhizosphere soil and non-rhizosphere soil was observed. The water-soluble P contents in the rhizosphere soil of A. philoxeroides, T. latifolia, S. sagittifolia and P. communis were reduced by 81%, 42%, 18% and 16%, respectively, compared with that in the non-rhizosphere soil. A. philoxeroides had the highest phosphorus uptake efficiency (1.32 mg/m), while T. latifolia achieved the effective phosphorus depletion by the strong rooting system and the high phosphorus uptake efficiency (0.52 mg/m). T. latifolia not only used phosphorus to produce biomass economically, but also adjusted carbon allocation to the roots to explore the soil for more available phosphorus. A. philoxeroides and T. latifolia were more effective in depleting phosphorus in the rhizosphere than S. sagittifolia and P. communis. 相似文献

Empirical and theoretical studies have only recently begun to examine how females use complex multi-component displays when
selecting mates. Superb fairy-wrens are well suited to the study of female choice because females have control over extra-group
paternity and cuckold their mates at high rates, while males possess a variety of sexually selected traits. Available evidence
suggests that females base their extra-group mate choice on the timing of male moult into breeding plumage or the onset of
display. However, males continue to perform elaborate displays throughout the season, and direct most displays to females
during their fertile period. We therefore conducted focal observations on fertile females to quantify the frequency of male
display and used microsatellite genotyping to compare the role of display rate during the breeding season and the timing of
male moult on female mate choice. We show that the addition of data on male display rate does not improve our ability to predict
which males obtain extra-group paternity. The timing of male moult into breeding plumage remains the only predictor of male
extra-group reproductive success. Nevertheless, we found that males displayed more to females that were unable to select extra-group
mates on the basis of the timing of moult or the onset of display. This raises the possibility that there are circumstances
when females use display rate to discriminate between potential extra-group sires. Overall this study supports the theoretical
prediction that females are more likely to base their mate choice on reliable indicators of male quality such as fixed morphological
traits and displays of endurance, in this case an early moult into breeding plumage and the performance of an elaborate display
during the winter, than a flexible behavioural trait such as display rate during the breeding season.

Larval dispersal and recruitment are important in determining adult coral distribution; however, few studies have been made of coral larval dispersal. This study examined the larval behavior, survivorship competency periods and settlement of two brooding corals, Heliopora coerulea and Pocillopora damicornis, in relation to different potential larval dispersal patterns. We also examined the lipid content of H. coerulea as a means of flotation and a source of energy. Planulae of H. coerulea were on average 3.7 mm in length, lacked zooxanthellae, and were mostly benthic, probably because of restricted movement and low lipid content (54% by dry weight). Planulae of P. damicornis were on average 1.0 mm in length, had zooxanthellae and swam actively. The competency period of H. coerulea was shorter (30 days) than that of P. damicornis (100 days). Forty percent of H. coerulea planulae crawled onto the substrata within 1 h of release, and 47% settled within 6 h. By contrast, fewer than 10% of P. damicornis planulae crawled onto the substrata within the first hour and 25% settled within 6 h of release. The planulae of H. coerulea may have a narrower dispersal range than those of P. damicornis, settling and recruiting near parent colonies. Thus, brooding corals exhibit variations in larval dispersal patterns, which are characterized by their position in the water column and competency periods. 相似文献

The shells of living queen scallops,Chlamys opercularis (L.), are often completely colonised with epifauna. In this study, the distribution of the major epifaunal groups across the surfaces of left (upper) and right (lower) valves is examined using samples from two commercial queen scallop beds off the Isle of Man. The composition of the epifauna differs across and between the valves and also varies with the age of the scallop. YoungerC. opercularis are commonly encrusted by sponges, but on older shells other epifauna colonise the surfaces. The encrusting bryozoan assemblage found on livingC. opercularis is not as abundant or speciose as on some other substrata such as stones and dead shell. This may be a result of intense competition from other phyla. The distribution of different bryozoan species between the surfaces is examined. Most species are more abundant on the lower valves. 相似文献

The hypothesis was tested that predation-disturbance by epibenthic macrofauna affects the abundance of sediment-dwelling harpacticoid copepods. The copepods inhabited a subtidal seagrass (Zostera marina L.) bed in British Columbia, Canada. The response of the harpacticoid community was observed in controlled field experiments in which epibenthic predators-disturbers were excluded from portions of the seagrass bed. Controlled, exclusion-cage (0.8 m2 area, 7-mm mesh) experiments were conducted within the seagrass bed from late March/early April to mid-June in both 1986 and 1987. Sampling was conducted biweekly. Exclusion of large epibenthic predators-disturbers had little effect on sediment-dwelling harpacticoid copepod density. Total harpacticoid numbers and abundances of dominant species generally did not increase in the exclusion treatment relative to the control. Shifts in species composition of the harpacticoid community did not occur. The treatment control was adequate in simulating the exclusion cage structure. It appears that large epibenthic predators-disturbers have little impact on the abundance of harpacticoid copepod populations at this study site. 相似文献

Larval growth rate and settlement of the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis were experimentally studied as a function of the composition of dietary fatty acids. Diets differing in fatty acid composition were composed by mixtures of the microalgae Isochrysis galbana, Pavlova lutheri and Chaetoceros calcitrans. Fatty acid content in the tissue of the feeding larvae, analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, reflected the composition in the diet. Larval growth rate was significantly correlated to the three omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) C18:3, C18:4 and C22:6, with minor differences for neutral and polar lipids. No relation between growth rate and the omega-3 PUFA C20:5 was detected, a PUFA often implied as essential for bivalves. It is suggested that naturally occurring variability in fatty acid composition may constrain larval growth. In settlement experiments in both still water and flume flow little substrate selectivity was found for some contrasting substrates. Settlement of mussels is commonly associated with macroalgae. The effects of 19 macroalgal species on the settlement and metamorphosis
of pediveliger larvae of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis were investigated in the laboratory. Settlement and metamorphosis inducing activities of macroalgae Chlorodesmis fastigiata and Ceramium tenerrimum collected each month during the period between January 2005 and April 2006 were also investigated. Furthermore, C. fastigiata and C. tenerrimum were subjected to various treatments to investigate the roles of bacteria and diatoms on the algal surface in the induction
of larval settlement and metamorphosis of M. galloprovincialis and the characteristics of the cues in these two macroalgae. Pediveliger larvae of M. galloprovincialis settled and metamorphosed in high percentages on Cladophora sp., Chlorodesmis fastigiata, Centroceras clavulatum, and Ceramium tenerrimum, all of which were filamentous in morphology. Macroalgae that were cylindrical, phylloid, flabellate, palmate and pinnate
all showed low (<8%) percentages of post-larvae but four other filamentous macroalgae also had low mussel larval settlement,
suggesting that chemical factors may also be involved. Seasonal variation had no effect on inductive activities of C. fastigiata and C. tenerrimum. Treatment of C. fastigiata and C. tenerrimum with formalin, ethanol and heat resulted in the significant decrease or loss of their inductive activities. Survival of algal
cells within treated macroalgae also decreased significantly. Treatment of the two macroalgae with antibiotics and GeO2 reduced the numbers of bacteria and diatoms on their surface but did not affect their inductive activities, indicating that
the cue was produced by macroalgae and not by coexisting bacteria and diatoms. However, conditioned water and crude extracts
of these two macroalgae did not induce larval settlement and metamorphosis. Thus, larvae of M. galloprovincialis settled and metamorphosed on specific filamentous macroalgae. The chemical cues produced by C. fastigiata and C. tenerrimum were susceptible to ethanol and heat treatments and were not recovered in the conditioned water nor in the extracts. The
finding that inactive C. tenerrimum can be produced from culturing its apical segments provides a new tool to elucidate the chemical cue(s) from macroalgae through

Restorations commonly utilize seed addition to formerly arable lands where the development of native plant communities is severely dispersal limited. However, variation in seed addition practices may profoundly affect restoration outcomes. Theory and observations predict that species-rich seed mixtures and seeding at high densities should enhance native plant community establishment, minimize exotic species cover, and may promote resistance and resilience to, and recovery from, environmental perturbations. We studied the post-seeding establishment of native plant communities in large grassland restoration plots, which were sown at two densities crossed with two levels of species richness on formerly arable land in Nebraska, USA, and their responses to drought. To evaluate drought resistance, recovery, and resilience of restored plant communities, we erected rainfall manipulation structures and tracked the response of seeded species cover and total plant biomass during experimental drought relative to controls and in the post-drought growing season. High seed richness and high-density seeding treatments resulted in greater richness and cover of native, seeded species per 0.5 m2 compared to low-richness and low-density treatments. Cover differences in response to seed mixture richness were driven by native forbs. Richness and cover of exotic species were lowest in high-richness and high-density treatments. We found little evidence of differential drought resistance, recovery, and resilience among seeding treatments. Increases in exotic species across years were restricted to drought subplots, and were not affected by seeding treatments. Grassland restoration was generally enhanced and exotic cover reduced both by the use of high-richness seed mixtures and high-density seeding. Given the lack of restoration treatment effects on the resistance, recovery, or resilience of seeded species exposed to drought, and the increases in exotic species following drought, other forms of active management may be needed to produce restored plant communities that are robust to climate change. 相似文献

In contrast to other apes, humans have relatively greater amounts of armpit hair, which is thought to retain signaling molecules.
Although armpit shaving is widespread cross-culturally, its effect on body odor has been little investigated. In four experiments,
we tested the effect of shaving and the subsequent regrowth of axillary hair. Armpit odors were collected from men who regularly
shaved (group S) or who had never shaved (group N) their armpits before. The samples were subsequently rated by women for
intensity, pleasantness, and attractiveness. In Experiments I, II (group N) and III, subjects firstly shaved one armpit and then let the hair regrow over 6 or 10 weeks. In Experiments I, II (group S) and IV, subjects shaved both armpits before the sampling and subsequently shaved one armpit during the same period, leaving the
second armpit unshaved. Odors of the shaved armpits were rated more pleasant, attractive, and less intense compared to the
unshaved armpits (Experiment I (group N)). However, no significant differences found in Experiments II and III (group N) suggest the effect of shaving is relatively minor. Moreover, there were no significant differences in odor comparing
unshaved armpits with armpits after 1 week of regrowth (Experiments I, II (group N) and III) or comparing regularly shaved armpits with armpits after 1 or 3 weeks of regrowth (Experiments I, II (group S) and IV). The odor of shaved armpits was rated significantly more attractive compared to the armpits where hair

From May 1977 to February 1979, the use of sponges and ascidians by Cryptodromia hilgendorfi was studied in Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia. The aim was to investigate patterns of seasonal use, cap making behaviour, cap turnover, the effect of intraspecific interactions on cap life and the effect of movement of crabs between hosts on background matching. C. hilgendorfi uses 12 (of 16 available) species of sponge and 3 species of ascidians to construct caps, which are carried by the crabs using their last two pairs of legs. Cap area increases non-linearly with crab size, and caps are normally two to three times as large as the crabs. Cap making behaviour is described. It occurs during intermoult periods, with females making most of their caps at night. Caps decrease in size with time, but conceal the crabs which commonly occupy exposed sites on sponges. Cap life is independent of crab size, differs between different cap species and is influenced by the presence of other crabs who can dislodge caps through aggressive behaviour. Caps are made from the sponge Suberites carnosus more often than from other available sponges. S. carnosus caps also decay less rapidly than caps made from other sponges. Use of sponge and ascidian species varies seasonally, with Halichondria sp. and S. carnosus being used in all months. C. hilgendorfi exhibits a preference for certain sponges. The majority of crabs carried caps which matched their host sponge or ascidian, but mis-matches varied seasonally with a winter peak following the breeding season. Young C. hilgendorfi settle only on S. carnosus sponges and disperse from this host to other species in the environment. Males and females differ in their rate of discovery of new hosts. Males, despite their greater mobility, find new hosts slower than females. It is hypothesized that males occupy “home ranges” which females do not. Crabs frequently move between sponges, mostly at night. Sponges and ascidian species grow in intimate association with each other, and sponge crabs act a selective asexual propagation mechanism. Depending upon the nature of the interactions between sponge and ascidian species (co-operative or competitive) and whether competitive hierarchies or networks are involved, the sponge crabs may have either stabilizing or destabilizing effects on the sponge community. 相似文献

Changes in human behavior are a precursor to measurable impacts of no-take marine reserves. We investigated changes in recreational fishing site selection in response to the 2005 announcement of enforcement in a marine reserve in the Gulf of California, Mexico. We used a novel data set of daily self-reported boating destinations from emergency rescue logbooks for a recreational angling community from 2000 to 2008. Because the reserve system has no experimental control, we modeled the data two ways to test for robustness to model specification. We tested for changes in human fishing behavior with regression and fit a fleet-level discrete choice model to project a. counterfactual scenario. The counterfactual is the statistically constructed ex post expectation of the human behavior we would have observed if the reserve never existed. We included month and year fixed effects in our models to account for seasonal and interannual fluctuations in fishing behavior and catch rates. We detected a decrease in reserve use compared to the counterfactual, indicating that the reserve rapidly experienced a decrease in visitation. However, the reserve's effect to reduce trips diminished with time. These results indicate that the reserve is unlikely to meet its ecological goals without institutional changes that enhance compliance. This illustrates the value of human use data to understanding the processes underlying marine reserve function. We suggest that managers should consider human use with the same frequency, rigor, and tools as they do fishery stocks. Marine reserves directly affect people, and understanding human behavioral responses to marine reserves is an important step in marine reserve management. 相似文献

Biofilms were allowed to develop on glass slips immersed 1.0–1.5 m below the sea surface in Tachibana Bay, Nagasaki, Japan, for different periods of time from November 2003 to January 2005. The effects of age, immersion month, dry weight, bacterial and diatom densities of these biofilms on the settlement and metamorphosis of pediveliger larvae of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis were investigated in the laboratory. Furthermore, biofilms were subjected to various treatments to investigate the nature of the settlement and metamorphosis cue in the biofilm. Pediveliger larvae of the mussel settled and metamorphosed in response to biofilms. Settlement and metamorphosis to the post-larval stage significantly increased with the biofilm age. In addition, the biofilm activity varied depending on the immersion month (season), e.g., for biofilms with the same age, those immersed between June and August had higher activities than those immersed between November and March. The activity of the biofilm also positively correlated with the dry weight, bacterial and diatom densities. These three quantitative parameters of the biofilm were significantly affected by the film age but were not affected by the immersion month, suggesting that other parameters (e.g., community structures, extracellular products) also affected the inductive activity of the biofilm. The fixative agents (formalin and glutaraldehyde), heat, ethanol, ultraviolet irradiation and antibiotics treatments of the biofilm resulted in significant reduction or loss of its inductive activity. The survival of bacterial cells in the treated films where activities were either reduced or lost also decreased significantly. No settlement and metamorphosis were obtained when larvae were exposed to the conditioned water of the biofilm. Thus, larvae of M. galloprovincialis settled and metamorphosed in response to a cue produced by living bacteria in the biofilm. A pilot study was conducted at Davies Reef on the central Great Barrier Reef between 20 November 1991 and 20 January 1992 to assess the suitability of settlement collectors for measuring larval settlement rates of echinoderms on coral reefs. The collectors were deployed for two months during summer when many echinoderm species are known to spawn. A total of 657 newly settled echinoderms were recovered from just 47 collectors, each having a volume of just 0.005 m3 but with a utilisable surface area of about 1.44 m2, indicating that competent-to-settle larvae were very abundant during the sampling period. Echinoids (7.8 sampler-1) and ophiuroids (5.6 sampler-1) were the most abundant groups on the collectors. Asteroids (0.2 sampler-1) and crinoids (0.3 sampler-1 were less common. The asteroids were all identified to species and included the crown-of-thorns starfish Acanthaster planci, Choriaster granulatus and Culcita novaeguineae. The newly settled echinoids could not be distinguished from each other but included Echinometra mathaei and Mespilia globulus. The abundance of each of the five different classes of echinoderms on the samplers was correlated with their abundance on the natural substratum. Significant spatial variability was found in settlement rates of echinoids over 1000s of metres and ophiuroids over 100s of metres, but not over smaller spatial scales. It is concluded that the collectors can provide a useful tool for monitoring spatial and temporal variability in settlement rates of echinoderms on coral reefs and for testing hypotheses about patterns of larval dispersal. 相似文献

Several recent field studies have found disproportionately high barnacle settlement rates (expressed on a per-area basis)
in situations where the amount of suitable substrate is reduced, either due to occupation by other individuals or to physical
processes. We call this phenomenon the intensification effect; it is not included in many models of benthic populations, which
assume that the per-area settlement rate is a constant, or in field larval-collector studies, where number of larvae caught
is assumed to be a function only of larval supply. In this paper we derive a simple Markov chain model that generates the
intensification effect. It describes the fate of a settling larva, which may be washed out of the system or may attempt to
settle in suitable or unsuitable substrate. If it lands on unsuitable substrate, it returns to the water column to try again.
At low values of the washout rate, the per-area settlement rate decreases with increasing substrate area. At high values of
the washout rate, per-area settlement rate is constant. We conducted a set of laboratory experiments in March through April
1995 with barnacle larvae (Semibalanus balanoides Linnaeus) to illustrate the predictions of the model. Substrate area was manipulated by varying the number of settling panels
available, and the larval loss rate was adjusted by manipulating the residence time of larvae in the experimental units (1.5 h
or 12 h). As predicted by the model, in the 12-h treatment settlement per area decreased nonlinearly as the amount of substrate
increased, whereas in the 1.5-h treatment no differences were found. These results explain and predict the intensification
effect, and suggest that variability in the proportion of suitable substrate may be an important factor in determining variability
in settlement rate.
