Sediment reworking due to burrowing and feeding was studied in the spatangoid Brissopsis lyrifera, at two different temperatures (7°C and 13°C). Spine activity and burrowing behaviour were recorded with a real-time video camera. Reworked sediment volume was calculated from tracks produced by the heart urchin. Ingestion rates were measured by feeding the heart urchins with luminophores. Temperature had a significant effect on the bioturbation activity of B. lyrifera. At 13°C reworked sediment volume due to burrowing was 22 ml sediment h-1 and at 7°C 14 ml sediment h-1. The ingested amount of sediment was 0.08 and 0.02 g dry sediment h-1 in 13 and 7°C, respectively. Reworked sediment volume due to burrowing was 60-150 times higher than the volume ingested. The large reworked volume is a consequence of B. lyrifera moving with a rocking motion through the sediment. The spines were continuously transporting sediment around the test with 5-min metachronal wave cycles.  相似文献

The gastropod Polinices sordidus was collected from an uncontaminated area in Quibray Bay, New South Wales, Australia, in 1990. The snails were exposed for 2 wk to polluted sediments collected from Port Kembla Harbour, Blackwattle Bay, Lake Illawarra, Lake Macquarie in New South Wales, Australia, and the Derwent River in Tasmania, Australia. Metal accumulation and regulation by this species were evaluated. Metal concentrations in snail tissues and total, EDTA and HCl-extractable metals in the sediments were compared. Copper concentrations were extremely varied in snails exposed to the same sediment. This was not the case for other matals tested. No accumulation of copper was found in snails exposed to different sediments. There was no zinc accumulation from sediments containing less then 10 mg Zn/g. P. sordidus could accumulate lead, manganese and iron from some of the sediments. Manganese concentrations in the snail tissues correlated with total, HCl-extractable and, more significantly, EDTA-extractable Mn in the sediments. P. sordidus was not considered to be a good bioindicator of copper and zinc contaimination in sediments; however, this species could be used as an indicator of lead and manganese contamination.  相似文献

Hepatic mixed-function oxidases (MFOs) were measured in the bothid flatfishes Citharicthys sordidus and C. stigmaeus from relatively uncontaminated and from polluted coastal populations of California, USA, at various times of the year during 1979–1980 and in individuals fed crude oil and polychlorinated biphenyl-augmented food in the laboratory. For C. sordidus, aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) specific activity was generally highest around the Los Angeles County sewage outfall on the Palos Verdes Shelf, intermediate near the 7-mile Hyperion sewage outfall in Santa Monica Bay and around a petroleum seep in the Santa Barbara Channel, and lowest in relatively unpolluted Monterey Bay. For C. stigmaeus, which had about ten times less specific activity than the foregoing species, specimens from the Santa Barbara petroleum seep had significantly greater AHH specific activity than those from Monterey Bay. Fishes from contaminated environments also showed increases of microsomal proteins with molecular weights of 56, 54, 57 and 46×103; moreover, the content of cytochrome P-450 was elevated in specimens of C. sordidus from such environments. Augmentation of food with seep oil or polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) induced significant increases in the specific activity of AHH and amounts of microsomal proteins in C. stigmaeus. Thus, these two species of flatfishes are good candidates for monitoring biologically meaningful levels of petroleum and polychlorinated biphenyls in contaminated environments. Moreover, the mixed function oxidase pattern in fish populations from the Santa Barbara petroleum seep is evidently a functional adaptation to chronic intake of petroleum hydrocarbons.  相似文献

Food preferences, consumption rates and dietary assimilation related to food quality were investigated for the large semi-terrestrial and litter-consuming mangrove crab Ucides cordatus cordatus (Ocypodidae, L. 1763) in northern Brazil. Stomach contents were composed of mangrove leaves (61.2%), unidentified plant material and detritus (28.0%), roots (4.9%), sediment (3.3%), bark (2.5%), and animal material (0.1%). U. cordatus prefers Rhizophora mangle over Avicennia germinans leaves despite a higher nitrogen content, lower carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio and lower tannin content of the latter. Also, assimilation rates for senescent R. mangle leaves (C: 79.3%, N: 45.4%) were higher than for A. germinans leaves (C: 40.6%, N: 9.1%). Faeces composition indicates that A. germinans leaves were more difficult to masticate and digest mechanically. The leaf-ageing hypothesis, according to which crabs let leaves age in burrows to gain a more palatable and nutritive food, was rejected for U. cordatus since N content, C/N ratio and the abundance of microorganisms did not differ significantly between senescent leaves and leaves taken from burrows. The low microbial biomass on leaf surfaces and in the sediment indicates its minor importance for the nutrition of U. cordatus. It is concluded that high ingestion and assimilation rates of a R. mangle diet together with the consumption of algae allow for a high intake of C, N, and energy. The data suggest that the digestibility of mangrove leaves by U. cordatus is not hampered by tannins. This may have provided a competitive advantage over other leaf-consuming invertebrates unable to digest mangrove litter with high tannin concentrations. Due to the large stock biomass of U. cordatus in the study area, a great amount of finely fragmented faeces is produced (about 7.1 ton dry matter ha−1 year−1 in a R. mangle forest) which is enriched in C, N and bacterial biomass compared to the sediment. The decomposition of mangrove litter, and thus nutrient and energy transfer into the sediment, is greatly enhanced due to litter processing by U. cordatus.  相似文献

This study of the burrowing heart urchin Brissopsis lyrifera includes measurements on feeding and food selection, ingestion rate, absorption efficiency, ventilation and respiration. B. lyrifera regulated feeding depth, ingestion rate and absorption efficiency in relation to food source. When food was added to the top layer of sediment, B. lyrifera burrowed closer to the surface and ingested mainly enriched surface material, whereas it burrowed deeper and ingested deep-seated sediment in the controls. In non-enriched sediment, the feeding rate was 0.04 g sediment DW h-1 ind.-1, and, in macro- and microalga-enriched sediment the feeding rate was 0.06 and 0.08 g sediment DW h-1 ind.-1, respectively. Absorption efficiency of TOC was about 43% in non-enriched sediment and in microalga-enriched sediment, but was significantly lower (34%) in macroalga-enriched sediment. Absorption efficiency of N varied between 48% and 55%, and was independent of food source. B. lyrifera feed selectively, enriching the gut TOC content about 2-fold and N content about 2.5-fold. The C/N ratio was therefore lower within the gut compared to the surrounding sediment, while the faecal C/N ratio was almost equal to the surrounding sediment. The faeces were, however, slightly richer in TOC and N compared to the surrounding sediment. For 3-5 cm long B. lyrifera, water current rate varied between 4 and 24 ml water h-1, with a mean of 11 ml h-1. Mean respiration rate was 205 µl O2 h-1 ind.-1. The water current rate was not sufficient for B. lyrifera to sustain itself by filter feeding only. However, organic-rich particles from the surface are suggested to be an important contribution to the diet. A carbon budget was calculated for B. lyrifera from measured values of consumption, absorption efficiency and respiration, in order to estimate annual production of B. lyrifera. Compared to literature values, growth was overestimated about tenfold in the budget. A large proportion of the absorbed carbon was suggested to leave the animal as dissolved carbon, through mucus production or through anaerobic pathways, either by the heart urchin or by micro-organisms in the gut.  相似文献

Grazing and faecal pellet production by the copepods Calanus helgolandicus and Pseudocalanus elongatus, feeding on the coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi, were measured under defined laboratory conditions, together with the chemical characteristics and sinking rates of the faecal pellets produced. Ingestion rates of both copepods were equivalent at comparable cell concentrations, the relationship between ingestion rate (I, cells copepod-1 h-1) and food concentration (C, cells ml-1), being I=0.558C for both species. P. elongatus produced a larger number of smaller faecal pellets than C. helgolandicus, but egested a larger volume of material per individual. Only between 27 and 50% of the ingested coccolith calcite was egested in the faecal pellets, and it is possible that acid digestion in the copepod gut is responsible for these considerable losses. Average sinking rates of faecal pellets containing E. huxleyi coccoliths, produced by both species, were >100 m d-1. The implications of the quantitative laboratory estimates for the vertical flux of inorganic carbon are considered using recently studied shelf-break and oceanic E. huxleyi blooms in the N. E. Atlantic as examples.  相似文献

The present study tested the utilization of dead microbial biomass by two benthic deposit-feeders:Abra alba (Wood) (Mollusca: Bivalvia) andEupolymnia nebulosa (Montagu) (Annelida: Polychaeta). Clams were collected in the Canet lagoon during spring 1989. Worms were collected in the Port-Vendres harbour during spring 1989. The14C-labelled (glutamic acid, 24 h) sediment used during the study was sterilized with 1% chloroform, washed with sterile seawater, and dried (60°C; 48 h). This sterilisation procedure, called fumigation is the least harmful to the sediment (Novitsky 1986). Both clams and worms were incubated in the presence of the fumigated sediment for 5, 10, 20, and 50 h. At the end of each experiment we recorded the radioactivity in four compartments: (1) sediment, (2) dissolved organic matter (DOM), (3) CO2, and (4) animals. The radioactivity of the sediment was subdivided into five fractions: (i) soluble in 2N HCl, (ii) soluble in hot 5% trichloroacetic acid (TCA), (iii) soluble in 1N NaOH, (iv) soluble in hot 6N HCl, (v) residual (after combustion in a Leco carbon analyser). In the first set of experiments, after 20 h of incubation, 5.4 and 4.7% of the total radioactivity was taken up by clams and worms, respectively. However, a model revealed that this uptake could have been correlated with the release of radiolabelled DOM (33% of total radioactivity during the first 5 h). In order to test this assumption, we used the same protocol with three additional washes of the fumigated sediment. This resulted in a significantly lower uptake by the clams (1.9% of the total radioactivity byt = 50 h), whereas the worms exhibited an uptake similar to that in the initial experiment (5.1% of total radioactivity byt = 50 h). These results underline the importance of considering interactions with DOM when applying radiotracer techniques to the study of benthic food chains. The average ingestion rates of fumigated sediment byA. alba andE. nebulosa were 5.2 10–2 mg sediment dry wt mg–1 clam h–1 and 3.5 10–2 mg sediment dry wt mg–1 worm h–1, respectively, which is comparable to previous data reported for other deposit-feeding bivalves and polychaetes feeding on natural sediment or detritus. The low radioactivity recorded for CO2 together with the similarity of the changes in the partitioning of the radioactivity within the sediment between control experiments and experiments carried out in the presence of clams or worms suggest low assimilation efficiencies. Therefore, the present study supports the fact that dead microbial biomass does not constitute an important food source for benthic deposit-feeders.  相似文献

Grazing experiments were performed with temperatureacclimated Acartia hudsonica fed the diatom Skeletonema costatum in concentrations ranging from 50 to 3×104 cell ml-1 at 5°, 10° and 15°C. The ingestion data were best fit by an Ivlev equation. Feeding threshold values of 39 and 59 cells ml-1 were not significantly different from zero; however, filtration rates were depressed at low food concentrations. Maximum filtration rates increased exponentially with temperature, reaching a maximum with copepods collected at 14°–15°C, and then declining. Both the increase in ingestion rate with increasing food concentration and the maximum ingestion rate were significantly greater as experimental temperature was increased. Maximum ingestion rates were reached at concentrations greater than 6×103 cells ml-1. Percent of body carbon ingested per day at 5 g C L-1 increased from 1.5% at 5°C to 6.7% at 15°C. At 500 g C L-1, the ingestion increased from 84% (5°C) to 660% (15°C). Percent of body nitrogen at 0.5 g N L-1 increased from 0.6% per day at 5°C to 2.5% per day at 15°C. At 50 g N L-1, the ingestion was 42% body nitrogen at 5°C and 250% at 15°C. The influence of grazing by A. hudsonica on phytoplankton in Narragansett Bay, USA was estimated for 1972–1977. The percent of standing stock removed by grazing rarely exceeded 5% per day except during the late spring when S. costatum growth becomes nutrient limited and higher temperatures favor the rapid population growth of A. hudsonica.  相似文献

Microcosms containing different densities of Corophium volutator, ranging from 0 to 6000 ind m-2, were incubated in a flow-through system. Benthic fluxes of CO2, O2, NO3 - and NH4 + were measured regularly. Thirteen days after setup the microcosms were sacrificed and sediment characteristics, pore water NO3 -, NH4 + and exchangeable NH4 + concentrations, and potential nitrification activity were measured. The presence of C. volutator increased overall mineralization processes due to burrow construction and irrigation. The amphipods increased the ratio CO2/O2 fluxes from 0.73 to 0.86 in microcosms inhabited by 0 and 6000 ind m-2, respectively. Burrow ventilation removed NH4 + from the sediment, which was nitrified in the oxic layer and transported NO3 - to the burrow sediment, where denitrification potential was enhanced. Nitrification and total denitrification rates (denitrification of NO3 - coming from the overlying water and of NO3 - generated within the sediment) were calculated and discussed. Bioturbation by C. volutator increased both nitrification and denitrification, but denitrification was stimulated more than nitrification. Denitrification of NO3 - coming from the overlying water was stimulated 1.2- and 1.7-fold in microcosms containing 3000 and 6000 ind m-2 relative to control microcosms. The presence of C. volutator (6000 ind m-2) stimulated nitrogen removal from the system, as dinitrogen, 1.5-fold relative to non-bioturbated microcosms. C. volutator individuals used in our study were collected from Norsminde Fjord, Denmark, in 1990.  相似文献

This study aims to determine the influence of the quality of food on specific dynamic action (SDA) in the ascidian Ciona intestinalis and thereby if respiratory measurements of SDA can be used to monitor the quality of a potential food source. Weight specific rates of filtration, ingestion and respiration of C. intestinalis were examined using two different experimental methods. Two food sources were selected, the flagellate Rhodomonas sp. representing a high-quality food source and the eelgrass Zostera marina representing a potentially low-quality food source. In spite of insignificant differences in weight specific rates of filtration and ingestion of Rhodomonas sp. and Z. marina, significant differences in weight specific respiration rates and weight specific ingestion rates of C. intestinalis at different particle concentrations of the two food sources were found. Ingestion of Rhodomonas sp. resulted in a SDA coefficient of 20%, whereas the respiratory increase after ingestion of Z. marina was insignificant. From the experimental results it is concluded that SDA of C. intestinalis is strongly dependent on the quality of the food ingested.Communicated by L. Hagerman, Helsingør  相似文献

A psychrotrophic bacterial strain, Pseudoaltermonas sp. SM9913, was isolated from deep-sea sediment collected at 1,855 m depth. Two proteases produced by Pseudoaltermonas sp. SM9913 were purified, MPC-01 and MCP-02. MCP-01 is a serine protease with a molecular weight of 60.7 kDa. It is cold-adapted with an optimum temperature of 30–35°C. Its Km and Ea for the hydrolysis of casein were 0.18% and 39.1 kJ mol–1, respectively. It had low thermostability, and its activity was reduced by 73% after incubation at 40°C for 10 min. MCP-02 is a mesophilic metalloprotease with a molecular weight of 36 kDa. Its optimum temperature for the hydrolysis of casein was 50–55°C. The Km and Ea of MCP-02 for the hydrolysis of casein were 0.36% and 59.3 kJ mol–1, respectively. MCP-02 had high thermostability, and its activity was reduced by only 30.5% after incubation at 60°C for 10 min. At low temperatures, Pseudoaltermonas sp. SM9913 mainly produced the psychrophilic protease MCP-01.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe  相似文献

Rates of ingestion of natural particulate organic matter and subsequent assimilation and respiration by zooplankton at Enewetak Atoll lagoon (Marshall Islands) were measured using a flow-through system. Maximum daily ingestion rates of carbon and nitrogen, expressed as a percentage of the body content, were 79 and 37%, respectively, for the large copepod Undinula vulgaris; 112 and 65%, respectively, for a group of mixed small copepods; and 61 and 34%, respectively, for the pteropod Creseis acicula. Daily metabolic carbon losses, expressed as above, were 63% for U. vulgaris, 88% for the small copepods, and 50% for C. acicula. Assimilation efficiences of carbon and nitrogen ranged from about 86 to 91%. The above rates are generally higher than in previous reports for similar sized zooplankton in temperate waters, while the daily growth increments, expressed as a percentage of the body carbon content (4.8% for U. vulgaris, 8.6% for the small copepods, and 2.6% for C. acicula), are comparable. It appears that the high rates of ingestion and assimilation of organic matter are compensated by high metabolic losses. These results indicate that at least for carbon, tropical zooplankton may have low growth efficiencies ranging from 4 to 9%.  相似文献

In intertidal sediments, burial and decomposition of macroalgal detritus can fuel the sediment of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N), which can be either promptly mineralised or assimilated to enter the food web. This study investigates the transfer of algal-derived C and N to the sediment and to the infauna feeding primarily on benthic diatoms. Thalli of Ulva spp. were 13C- and 15N-labelled in the mesocosm and frozen to create detritus. Thawed macroalgae were, then, buried in the sediment of an intertidal sand-flat forming a mosaic of small patches (50 × 50 cm2) enriched with the macroalgae interspersed with bare sediment. The area was dominated by Corophium volutator and Hydrobia ulvae. The uptake of 13C and 15N was measured in the residual macroalgae, in the sediment and in those animals. Decomposition of detritus was rapid and after 4 weeks the residual biomass was 3% the amount added. Algal-derived 13C and 15N were moved to the sediment. The total amount of 13C and 15N retained in the sediment after completing the decomposition was 3.4 ± 0.5% 13C and 2.7 ± 0.6% 15N the amount decomposed. During the first 2 weeks more N than C was assimilated (1.7% 13C and 13.5% 15N). During the remaining two weeks, N was released from the sediment, while there was little accumulation of C (+6.4 ± 2.0 % 13C and −7.7 ± 3.8% 15N). At the end of the decomposition, animals were 15N- and 13C-labelled. Considering the total accumulation of label in the sediment, they accounted for 3.5 ± 1.8% 13C and 25.8 ± 12.9 % 15N. Similarly, considering the mass of the heavy isotopes gained (13C) or lost (15N) during the remaining 2 weeks, the animals accounted for 4.7 ± 2.1% of the 13C in excess and for 18.6 ± 9.1% of the 15N loss. The transfer of C and N to the sediment and to the surface deposit-feeders can be a relevant mechanism to remove the excess of detritus from the sediment.  相似文献

We determined seasonal and spatial variation of zooplankton and their correlation with environment variables in a subtropical lake of the Himalayas. Thirty-eight species of zooplankton were identified, of which, 38.0% belonged to rotifera, 26.3% to cladocera, and 15.7% to copepoda. Nitrogen nutrients, total organic matter (TOM), and clay particles significantly influenced on the distribution pattern of zooplankton. Non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis showed homogeneous assemblages of dominant zooplankton species except Chydorus gibbus which has wider range of niche partitioning. Turbidity formed by suspended materials facilitated better avoidance of larger zooplankton like Daphnia similis from predators. Sedimentary silt particles influenced on the assemblages of sensitive species such as Tropocyclops prasinus, Asplanchna priodonta and Colurella obtuse. Changes within the land-use pattern in the catchment of the central Himalayan lakes either directly or indirectly impact on the distribution of zooplankton community.  相似文献

Egg production and hatching success of the copepod Temora longicornis were measured in laboratory experiments and in the field (North Sea). In the laboratory, ingestion of four algal species (Thalassiosira weissflogii, Phaeocystis globosa, Isochrysis sp. and Dunaliella tertiolecta) was followed and the content of fatty acids in the algae was determined. The two food types (T. weissflogii and Isochrysis sp.) that provided the highest ingestion of carbon and long chain fatty acids also resulted in the highest egg production rate (Er) and hatching success (H%). In contrast, D. tertiolecta led to both low ingestion of carbon and long chain fatty acids, resulting in low reproductive success. There was a positive relationship between the amount of eicosapentaenoic fatty acid [20:5(n-3), EPA] ingested and Er and H%, and of the ratio between docosahexaenoic and eicosapentaenoic fatty acid [22:6(n-3)/20:5(n-3), DHA/EPA] in the ingested food and H%. In the field, chlorophyll a and specific fatty acids were measured and protists were enumerated, in order to investigate the link between these factors and the reproductive success of T. longicornis. Hatching time was found to be related to temperature and exceeded 120 h at 6°C. No relationship was found between chlorophyll a and reproductive success (Er or H%). Er correlated with the concentration of diatoms and ciliates, which were the dominating protists in early spring, indicating that food quantity was the limiting factor for Er. As in the laboratory experiments, H% was dependent on the fatty acid DHA and the ratio of DHA/EPA, which indicates that the quality of eggs (H%) is linked to the quality of food.Communicated by M.  Two species of parrot fish, Scarus frenatus and Chlorurus sordidus, are known to exhibit demographic and life-history differences across the continental shelf of the northern Great Barrier Reef (GBR). DNA sequences from the mitochondrial (mt) control region were analysed to determine whether there were genetic differences between the populations from the mid- and outer-shelf reefs. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) indicated high levels of gene exchange for both species at a local scale between reefs on mid- and outer continental shelf positions (20 km apart) and at a broader scale along the length of the GBR province (>1000 km apart). There was no evidence to suggest that local differences in scarid life-history characteristics on the northern GBR have a genetic basis. Rather it appears more likely that phenotypically plastic responses to prevailing social and environmental conditions explain differences in the life-history characteristics of both taxa. However, analysis of genetic variation and historical demography revealed striking differences between the two species. S. frenatus haplotypes differed from one another at relatively few nucleotide sites (mean = 3.30), and the pairwise mismatch distribution suggested this species has undergone a population expansion within the limit of the resolution of the marker. C. sordidus haplotypes, however, differed from one another at a number of sites (mean = 7.67). Mismatch distribution analysis suggested that the population size of this species has remained at equilibrium over time. These patterns could also reflect differences in the metapopulation sizes or generation times between taxa. Some of the implications for fisheries management are discussed. Polychaetes belonging to the genus Capitella are often present in high numbers in organic-rich sediments polluted with, e.g., oil components, and Capitella spp. may have a great impact on the biogeochemistry of these sediments. We examined the influence of Capitella sp. I on microbial activity in an organic-rich marine sediment contaminated with the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, fluoranthene. Capitella sp. I were added to microcosms (10 000 ind m−2) and the impact of a pulse-sedimentation of fluoranthene-contaminated sediment (3 mm layer) was studied for a period of 12 d after sedimentation. The sediment oxygen uptake and total sediment metabolism (TCO2 production) increased in cores with worms (71 to 131%), whereas the anaerobic activity, measured as sulfate reduction rate 12 d after sedimentation, was lower compared to cores without worms. The effect of fluoranthene on sulfate reduction was most pronounced in the presence of worms, with a 34% reduction versus 16% in cores without worms. The reduced sulfur pools in cores with worms were smaller than in cores without worms, suggesting that the reduced anaerobic activity was caused by increased oxidation of the sediment, which may favor O2 and other electron-acceptors (e.g. NO3 , Fe3+, Mn4+) in organic matter decomposition. The sediment oxygen uptake and TCO2 production did not show significant changes due to fluoranthene treatment, indicating that these parameters were either less sensitive to fluoranthene stress or recovered more rapidly (i.e. within 48 h) than sulfate reduction rates. Bioturbation by Capitella sp. I altered the depth profile of fluoranthene such that fluoranthene was found in deeper sediment layers (down to 2 cm) where diffusional loss and microbial breakdown probably are reduced relative to surface layers. In cores without worms, fluoranthene was found down to 1 cm, with 75% remaining in the upper 5 mm. Received: 5 December 1996 / Accepted: 11 February 1997  相似文献

Complete carbon and nitrogen budgets at 8° and 12° C over the life span of Euphausia pacifica were constructed from data published in the foregoing publication. The relative magnitudes of physiological functions such as metabolism and growth for the different life history stages were compared. The carbon net growth efficiency (NGE) for E. pacifica increased to a maximum of 60 to 74% at Calyptopis 3 (a larval stage) and then decreased rapidly to a level of 10 to 12% for adults. The cumulative amount of assimilated carbon or nitrogen in reproductive products was equal to that in growth. The cumulative net production efficiency (tissue plus molts plus reproductive products) is 24 to 29%, and is slightly higher for nitrogen than for carbon. For juveniles and adults, the largest proportion (40 to 65%) of assimilated material is used in metabolism, and is about 10% higher at 8° than 12° C. The difference between measured and predicted ingestion (the sum of metabolism, leakage, defecation, growth, molting and reproduction) probably results from poorly understood aspects of zooplankton physiology (e.g. the effect of body weight on leakage). Nitrogen budgets at 8° C for furcilia bulanced the best, with deviations of less than 10%. In general, predicted ingestion was increasingly less than measured ingestion as body weight and temperature increased. Possible omissions or errors in assumptions or methods that may cause the imbalances are discussed.  相似文献

The behaviour of the Caribbean Corallianassa longiventris and the Mediterranean Pestarella tyrrhena, two burrowing thalassinideans, was studied in situ and in laboratory aquaria. Burrows of C. longiventris were closed most of the time; they consist of a deep U (down to 1.5 m) with upper and deeper chambers, some of them filled with macrophyte debris. The burrows of P. tyrrhena reached down to a maximum depth of 54 cm and consisted of a shallow U with a mound and a funnel, and a spiral shaft from which several, often debris-filled chambers branched off. The appearance of C. longiventris at the sediment surface to collect debris is strongly triggered by wave swell or odours from plant and animal juices; its burrows are opened within 10 min. The surface activity of P. tyrrhena was relatively less frequent and less predictable. Inside the burrows, both species exhibited different patterns of time allocated to 25 defined behavioural states. After being offered seagrass debris, P. tyrrhena spent relatively less time manipulating this debris, but it handled sediment more often than C. longiventris. During frequent mining events, both species showed sediment-sorting behaviour, which brought a parcel of sediment in close contact with the mouthparts; some of this sediment may be ingested because the fecal rods produced by both shrimps contain very fine sediment particles. Seagrass debris is irregularly tended by P. tyrrhena after its introduction into the chambers. Such material ultimately becomes buried. Corallianassa longiventris frequently returns to its debris chambers to pick up pieces of seagrass, which are subsequently cut with the chelae or ripped with the third maxilliped and then transported to another empty chamber nearby. Pieces become smaller with time and show curved cutting edges and bite marks. After 100 to 140 days, 2 to 6 g(dw) seagrass debris are consumed in this manner by individuals of this species. The debris-related behaviour of P. tyrrhena probably enriches the sediment around the burrow for stochastic encounters during later mining events. Such an indirect benefit may also be effective on a population level because other individuals may also encounter this buried nutrient source.
