An intensive sampling program of physical and chemical parameters has been undertaken at Vassova lagoon, northeast Greece, in order to examine water circulation and estimate the instantaneous and residual fluxes of water, salt, nutrients and chlorophyll-a through the entrance canal of this lagoon. Field data of hydrographic and water quality parameters were collected under neap and spring tidal cycles, and under winter and summer conditions, to account for the fortnight and seasonal effects in the lagoon. The analysis showed that the Eulerian residual transport is positive in direction during both tidal cycles, thus pushing water, salt, nitrate-nitrogen, phosphate-phosphorus and chlorophyll-a inward Vassova lagoon. Tidal pumping was mostly positive during the neap tide and negative during the spring tidal cycle, thus pushing water, salt, phosphorus and chlorophyll-a outwards of Vassova lagoon.  相似文献

In this paper, we study and quantify pollutant concentrations after long-term leaching at relatively low flow rates and residual concentrations after heavy flushing of a 0.14 m3 municipal solid waste sample. Moreover, water flow and solute transport through preferential flow paths are studied by model interpretation of experimental break-through curves (BTCs), generated by tracer tests. In the study it was found that high concentrations of chloride remain after several pore volumes of water have percolated through the waste sample. The residual concentration was found to be considerably higher than can be predicted by degradation models. For model interpretations of the experimental BTCs, two probabilistic model approaches were applied, the transfer function model and the Lagrangian transport formulation. The experimental BTCs indicated the presence of preferential flow through the waste mass and the model interpretation of the BTCs suggested that between 19 and 41% of the total water content participated in the transport of solute through preferential flow paths. In the study, the occurrence of preferential flow was found to be dependent on the flow rate in the sense that a high flow rate enhances the preferential flow. However, to fully quantify the possible dependence between flow rate and preferential flow, experiments on a broader range of experimental conditions are suggested. The chloride washout curve obtained over the 4-year study period shows that as a consequence of the water flow in favoured flow paths, bypassing other parts of the solid waste body, the leachate quality may reflect only the flow paths and their surroundings. The results in this study thus show that in order to improve long-term prediction of the leachate quality and quantity the magnitude of the preferential water flow through a landfill must be taken into account.  相似文献

We developed a new numerical model to investigate the dynamics of tidal flat ecosystems and their role in water quality in terms of the carbon cycle. This model was applied to Isshiki, a natural tidal flat area, which is the largest in Mikawa Bay, Japan.This model dealt with variations of biochemical or physical interaction among dissolved oxygen and C–N–P species (comprised of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus elements) both on a short-time scale (<24 h) as well as over a long-time scale (seasonal variation). The model indicated that the time dependence on phytoplankton, NH4–N, NOx–N, and PO4–P are more sensitive to daily environmental variation than to seasonal environmental variation. This means that the rotation speed of these materials in the tidal flat area is fast. Here, we defined the rotation speed as the ratio of total fluxes of substance to the mass of the substance. Phytoplankton with a high rotation speed in the tidal flat area means that the tidal flat has the potential to recover from rapidly increasing phytoplankton: red tide. The model also indicated that the peculiar feature of the tidal flat is the mineralization of organic material. The effect on a long term base, is that it prevents the accumulation of sediment, which results in controlling the increase of oxygen consumption in benthic system, which is the cause of oxygen depleted water.  相似文献

A landfill is a very complex heterogeneous environment and as such it presents many modelling challenges. Attempts to develop models that reproduce these complexities generally involve the use of large numbers of spatially dependent parameters that cannot be properly characterised in the face of data uncertainty. An alternative method is presented, which couples a simplified microbial degradation model with a stochastic hydrological and contaminant transport model. This provides a framework for incorporating the complex effects of spatial heterogeneity within the landfill in a simplified manner, along with other key variables. A methodology for handling data uncertainty is also integrated into the model structure. Illustrative examples of the model's output are presented to demonstrate effects of data uncertainty on leachate composition and gas volume prediction.  相似文献

A discussion of some of the deficiencies of Superfund and hazardous chemical site investigation and remediation is presented. Of concern is the adequacy of defining the constituents of concern; stormwater‐runoff monitoring; evaluating excessive bioaccumulation of hazardous chemicals in edible organisms; the extent and degree of groundwater pollution; modeling of pollutant transport in the vadose zone; translocation of subsurface pollutants to surface via plant roots, leaves, and flowers; protection of groundwater quality for nonpriority pollutants that impact aesthetic quality; and deficiencies in the quality of site data reports. Examples of these types of problems are discussed with suggestions on the approach that should be followed to improve the quality of site investigation and remediation. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

The paper explores the application of a unit area loading (UAL) approach to address the requirements of the US Clean Water Act (CWA) and the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) for the identification and quantification of diffuse urban pollution sources. The UAL approach defines the spatial distribution of pollutant loadings within an urban catchment as a basis for the assessment of in-stream hazards and the implementation of source control BMP measures. Calculated annual outflow concentrations for a specific catchment for two pollutants, zinc and hydrocarbons, illustrate the different levels of dilution/control, which can be required to achieve receiving water quality standards and objectives. Methodological issues relating to traditional volume-concentration probabilistic modelling on which the UAL approach is based are discussed, and the application of the UAL approach to non-point diffuse pollution load management is reviewed.  相似文献

An index known as leachate pollution index (LPI) for quantifying the leachate contamination potential of municipal landfills had been developed and reported by the authors. It is a quantitative tool by which the leachate pollution data of landfill sites can be reported uniformly. LPI is an increasing scale index and has been formulated based on the Delphi technique. It provides a convenient means of summarizing complex leachate pollution data and facilitates its communication to the general public, field professionals and policy makers. However, it is observed that the LPI, like any other environmental index, fails to effectively communicate the details about the strength of various pollutants/pollutant groups present. In an effort to make the LPI more informative and useful, it is proposed to divide the LPI into three sub-indices. The aggregation of these three sub-LPIs will result in the overall LPI. The formulation and the application of LPI and its three sub-indices are presented in this paper. It has been concluded that the splitting of LPI into three sub-indices provides a better insight on the strength of various pollutants and can be useful to the experts in deciding various management issues regarding leachate treatment. The leachate characteristics of a UK landfill have been used as a case study to demonstrate the calculation of three sub-LPIs and the overall LPI.  相似文献

There are important functional relationships between river basins and coastal areas and one may influence the other. The two systems are linked through natural processes (water flow, sediment transport, energy) and human activities (urban development, rural activities, technical infrastructures, waste and pollution). Coastal areas are extremely valuable as they concentrate a rich diversity of natural habitat areas and a large variety of natural resources. River basins are also important areas from the point of view of natural ecosystems particularly on the basis of the presence of water and its support for the flora and fauna in the area. Coastal areas and river basin, at the same time provide opportunities for development of a wide range of human activities. The coastal zone is an essential part of a river basin. Both, river basin and coastal problems require a multi-sectoral approach. In some cases the two systems require a common framework of management. The goals, general objectives and principles of integrated river basin and coastal zone management are discussed.  相似文献

Due to the presence of toxic metals, dumping of heavy oil fly ash (HOFA) is causing ever-growing environmental problem including the pollution of air, water and soil. The present study investigates the possible environmental impacts associated with the land disposal of HOFA generated in the power plant. Different modeling and laboratory analysis were integrated to address the real environmental problems. Leaching behavior of heavy metals within the HOFA were investigated by laboratory batch leaching tests, which confirmed that most of the toxic elements in the HOFA can easily leach into the environment with rain water. The level of atmospheric dust surrounding a HOFA dumping site was predicted using the Industrial Source Complex (ISC3) air dispersion model, and the results indicated that the dumping of HOFA could be a potential hazard for local air quality. The study also revealed different reuse options of HOFA. The characteristic analysis confirmed HOFA can be used as a natural adsorbent to remove pollutants from wastewater or as soil stabilizing material by blending with cement.  相似文献

A decision analysis based model (DAPS 1.0, Decision Analysis of Polluted Sites) has been developed to evaluate risks that polluted sites might pose to human health. Pollutants present in soils and sediments can potentially migrate from source to receptor(s), via different pathways. In the developed model, pathways are simulated via transport models (i.e. groundwater transport model, runoff-erosion model, air diffusion model, and sediment diffusion, and resuspension model in water bodies). Humans can be affected by pollutant migration through land and water use. Health risks can arise from ingestion of and dermal contact with polluted water and soil, as well as through inhalation of polluted air. Quantitative estimates of risks are calculated for both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic pollutants. Being very heterogeneous, soil and sediment systems are characterized by uncertain parameters. Concepts of fuzzy set theory have been adopted to account for uncertainty in the input parameters which are represented by fuzzy numbers. An inference model using fuzzy logic has been constructed for reasoning in the decision analysis.  相似文献

在无GGH石灰石—石膏湿法烟气脱硫系统中,除雾器经常发生堵塞影响系统运行,需要严格操作以保证脱硫系统的正常运行。结合某210MW机组除雾器结垢堵塞情况,对除雾器结垢进行了取样分析,认为除雾器冲洗周期过长、冲洗水压不足、浆液质量不佳是造成除雾器堵塞的主要原因,同时除雾器压差表不准确也影响了其正常运行。经运行优化后,除雾器运行良好,为同类脱硫系统除雾器运行维护提供参考。  相似文献

The distributions and biogeochemical cycles of arsenic in the aquatic environment have captured the interest of geochemists due to arsenic’s multiple chemical forms, the toxicity of certain arsenic species and large anthropogenic input. Seasonal variations in the dissolved inorganic arsenic concentration and speciation in Jiaozhou Bay, which is located on the west coast of the Yellow Sea in northern China, are presented here. Three cruises were carried out in Jiaozhou Bay under varying tidal regimes, one at neap tide and one at spring tide in August and one at spring tide in October of 2001. In addition to the transect surveys, the main sources of dissolved inorganic arsenate and arsenite in Jiaozhou Bay, including riverine input from five major tributary rivers, atmospheric dry and wet depositions, and groundwater and wastewater input, were collected in different seasons to estimate arsenic transport through different sources. The mean concentrations of total dissolved inorganic arsenic (TDIAs, As (V+III)) in Jiaozhou Bay were statistically comparable between summer and autumn, with higher concentrations at the northwest and northeast parts of the bay, reflecting human activities. The As (III)/TDIAs ratio ranged between 0.045 and 0.68, with an average of 0.16, implying that arsenate was the dominating species in Jiaozhou Bay. A preliminary box model was established to estimate the water-mass balance and arsenic budgets for Jiaozhou Bay, which demonstrated that river inputs and atmospheric depositions were the main sources of arsenic into Jiaozhou Bay. The concentrations of dissolved inorganic arsenic in Jiaozhou Bay have decreased in the last two decades. Compared with other areas in the world, the concentration of arsenic in Jiaozhou Bay remains at the natural level and this region can be characterized as a less disturbed area.  相似文献

A three-dimensional numerical model of the physical and chemical behavior and fate of spilled oil has been coupled to a model of oil spill response actions. This coupled system of models for Oil Spill Contingency and Response (OSCAR), provides a tool for quantitative, objective assessment of alternative oil spill response strategies. Criteria for response effectiveness can be either physical (‘How much oil comes ashore?’ or ‘How much oil have we recovered?’) or biological (‘How many biologically sensitive areas were affected?’ or ‘What exposures will fish eggs and larvae experience in the water column?’). The oil spill combat module in the simulator represents individual sets of equipment, with capabilities and deployment strategies being specified explicitly by the user. The coupling to the oil spill model allows the mass balance of the spill to be affected appropriately in space and time by the cleanup operation as the simulation proceeds. An example application is described to demonstrate system capabilities, which include evaluation of the potential for both surface and subsurface environmental effects. This quantitative, objective approach to analysis of alternative response strategies provides a useful tool for designing more optimal, functional, rational, and cost-effective oil spill contingency solutions for offshore platforms, and coastal terminals and refineries.  相似文献

The Gowanus Canal Superfund Site in Brooklyn, New York, is an approximately 1.5‐mile (1.61‐km) long estuary that was historically converted into a canal for industrial and commercial purposes. Three manufactured gas plants (MGPs) were formerly located on the Gowanus Canal and discharged waste into it. Surface sediments remain highly contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) long after the MGPs were razed. A hydrogeologic assessment indicates that groundwater passes through the deeper coal tar–contaminated sediment prior to discharging to the canal. This study was undertaken to investigate if groundwater passing through coal tar–contaminated sediment could be responsible for the ongoing contamination of both surface sediments and surface water in the canal. PAH compound distributions in surface water samples collected from the tidal canal at low tide were compared with PAH compounds found in adjacent groundwater‐monitoring wells, point sources (combined sewer overflows [CSOs]), and surface sediments. The results indicate a strong correlation between PAH contaminant distributions in groundwater, sediment, and surface water, indicating that contaminated groundwater passing through the deeper coal tar–contaminated sediments is the primary mechanism contributing to the contamination of both surface sediment and surface water in the canal. Therefore, any sediment remediation efforts in the Gowanus Canal that fail to evaluate and control the upward transport processes have a high chance of failure due to recontamination from below.  ©2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

An integrated methodology is developed to quantify the geostatistical and transport properties of fractured media at multiple scales. Such information is helpful in developing numerical models and estimating the up-scaled transport coefficients of fractured formations. An oil-contaminated fractured site, overlying granite rock and situated in northern Spain, is investigated, and a macroscopic geological model that quantifies the regional distribution of faults and fractures over the entire area is established. The methodology is based on the measurement of fractured outcrops in the field (scale ~1-100 m), the collection of representative fractured samples and measurement of the fracture aperture (scale ~0.01-1 mm), and the analysis of macroscopic characteristics (scale ~1-5 km) of fracture/faults. The multi-scale fracture properties are utilized to construct a discrete fracture/fault network model which provides input data to a macroscopic simulator of contaminant transport in fractured porous media. The transient NAPL migration pathways are predicted for one scenario of pollution. Such information is helpful in the risk assessment of fractured contaminated sites.  相似文献

CDISCO, a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet–based model, can be used to assist with the design of in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) systems using permanganate (MnO4?). The model inputs are the aquifer characteristics (porosity, hydraulic conductivity, effective aquifer thickness, natural oxidant demand, kinetic parameters, contaminant concentrations, etc.), injection conditions (permanganate injection concentration, flow rate, and duration), and unit costs for reagent, drilling, and labor. MnO4? transport in the aquifer is simulated and used to estimate the effective radius of influence (ROI) and required injection point spacing. CDISCO then provides a preliminary cost estimate for the selected design conditions. The user can perform multiple runs of CDISCO to optimize the cost of the ISCO design. Comparisons with analytical and numerical models of nonreactive and reactive transport demonstrate that CDISCO accurately simulates MnO4? transport and consumption. Comparison of CDISCO results with the three‐dimensional heterogeneous simulations show that aquifer volume contact efficiency and contaminant mass treatment efficiency are closely correlated with the ROI overlap factor. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Three cruises were carried out in Jiaozhou Bay (JZB) in the neap tide in October 2002 (fall) and in both neap and spring tides in May 2003 (spring) to understand the relative importance of external nutrient inputs versus physical transport and internal biogeochemical processes. Nutrients (, , , , silicic acid, total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) and phosphorus (TDP), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and phosphorus (DOP)) were measured. The concentrations of nutrients were higher in the northern part than in the southern part. High concentrations of and DON in JZB demonstrated the anthropogenic input. Ambient nutrient ratios indicated that the potential limiting nutrients for phytoplankton growth were silicon, and then phosphorus. Nutrients showed an obvious tidal effect with low values at flood tide and high values at ebb tide. Nutrient elements were transported into JZB in the north and output in the south (i.e., into the Yellow Sea), which varied with season, tidal cycle and investigation sites. Water exchange between JZB and the Yellow Sea exports , and DON out of JZB, while it inputs , silicic acid and DOP into JZB. Nutrient budgets demonstrate that riverine input and wastewater discharge are major sources of nutrients, while residual flow is of minor importance in JZB ecosystem. JZB is a sink for the nutrient elements we studied except for DON. Stoichiometric calculations demonstrate that JZB is a net autotrophic system.  相似文献
