Assessing the impacts of globalization and gender parity on economic growth: empirical evidence from OIC countries

The contemporary debate on globalization and gender equality has a strong impact on economic growth. The present study analyzes the impacts of globalization and gender parity on economic growth in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) 47 member countries for the period (1991–2017), using System GMM panel data technique. The results of system GMM have also been empirically estimated by making two groups (viz., low-income and high-income OIC member countries from the World Bank data classification, 2019) to examine the robustness of globalization and gender parity on economic growth. The results reveal that there is a negative impact of globalization on economic growth in the overall sample of OIC countries. When estimated by decomposing low-income countries and high-income countries, globalization has a significantly positive impact on economic growth in the case of high-income OIC countries, whereas globalization slashes GDP in the case of low-income OIC countries. The study finds that there is a positive impact of gender parity (ratio of female to male labor force work participation) on economic growth. Moreover, foreign remittances, government expenditures, capital formation, and human capital are also becoming the causes of a significant increase in economic growth in OIC member countries.

Industrial digitization and synergy between pollution and carbon emissions control: new empirical evidence from China

Industrial digital transformation is a key engine to help developing countries reduce pollution and carbon emissions. We used the composite system synergy model (CSSM) and modified entropy weight method to measure the degree of synergy between pollution and carbon emissions control (SPCEC) and the level of industrial digitization in each province and city based on the Chinese inter-provincial panel data from 2011 to 2020. We then used the two-way fixed effects and panel quantile regression models to test the heterogeneous influence of industrial digitization on the SPCEC. We found that: (1) industrial digitization had a positive contribution to the SPCEC. (2) Digitization of industry contributes more to the SPCEC level than the digitization of agriculture and services. (3) The promotion of SPCEC by industrial digitization is significant in the western region, but not in the eastern, central and northeastern regions. (4) In provinces and municipalities with lower level of SPCEC, the contribution of industrial digitization to the SPCEC is higher. This paper reveals the impact of industrial digitization on the SPCEC and can provide a policy reference for the realization of the SPCEC from the perspective of the integration of industry and digitization.

节能减排效率与经济发展水平的耦合关系研究——以陕西省为例

研究了2005—2016年陕西省10个地级市的节能减排效率和经济发展水平,并对两者的耦合关系进行了分析,旨在为陕西省及其他地区环境与经济可持续协调发展提供参考。实证表明:(1)陕西省各地级市历年的节能减排效率均值均小于1,投入产出结构不甚合理,需协调技术进步与经济规模之间的关系。(2)陕西省经济发展指数呈波动上升趋势,总体上为缓慢增长。西安市经济的快速发展并未对周围地级市形成辐射带动作用。(3)经济发展水平和节能减排效率的耦合度总体上也呈波动上升趋势,其中节能减排效率提高会使耦合度下降,而经济发展水平的提高对耦合度起促进作用,但经济发展指数与耦合度之间呈倒U型分布。建议陕西省继续大力发展经济,增强西安市对周围地级市的辐射带动作用,同时转变西安市经济发展方式,提高资源配置效率,走集约型经济增长道路,以实现节能减排效率与经济发展水平的协调发展。
