A unique long term, 49-year record (divided into three time periods 1961–1976, 1977–1992, and 1993–2009) of snow profile stratigraphy from the Swedish sub Arctic, was analyzed with a focus on changes in snow characteristics. The data set contained grain size, snow layer hardness, grain compactness, and snow layer dryness, observed every second week during the winter season. The results showed an increase in very hard snow layers, with harder snow in early winter and more moist snow during spring. There was a striking increase in the number of observations with very hard snow at ground level over time. More than twice as many occasions with hard snow at ground level were observed between 1993 and 2009 compared to previous years, which may have a significant effect on plants and animals. The changes in snow characteristics are most likely a result of the increasing temperatures during the start and the end of the snow season.  相似文献

Weather station measurements were used to force the SNOWPACK snow model and combined with reindeer herders’ experiences to study the local and regional variations in snow conditions in a Finnish reindeer herding area for the 1981–2010 period. Winter conditions varied significantly between the four selected herding districts and between open and forest environments within the districts. The highest snow depths and densities, the thicknesses of ground ice, and the lengths of snow cover period were generally found in the northernmost districts. The snow depths showed the strongest regional coherence, whereas the thicknesses of ground ice were weakly correlated among the districts. The local variation in snow depths was higher than the regional variation and limits for rare or exceptional events varied notably between different districts and environments. The results highlight that forests diversify snow and foraging conditions, e.g., ground ice rarely forms simultaneously in different environments. Sufficient and diverse forest pastures are important during the critical winter season if reindeer herding is pursued on natural grazing grounds also in the future.  相似文献

We studied trends and variability in snow and climate characteristics in 1978–2012 in the Värriötunturit fell area, northern Finland. Cold season changes were examined using long-term observational data on snow depths, meteorological data, large-scale climate indices, and reindeer herders’ experiences with difficult snow conditions. Snow depths declined, and temperatures increased significantly over the study period, with the largest changes observed in October–December and in April. Snow depths decreased particularly in forests at lower altitudes but not in treeless areas at higher altitudes. Interannual variability (but not the trends) in snow depths could be partially linked to large-scale climate indices. A majority of difficult reindeer grazing conditions were related to deep snow in the winter or spring. Our observations suggest that shortened duration of snow cover may facilitate reindeer grazing, whereas potentially more frequent formation of ice layers and mold growth on pastures in the future is disadvantageous for reindeer husbandry.  相似文献

Winter climate and snow cover are the important drivers of plant community development in polar regions. However, the impacts of changing winter climate and associated changes in snow regime have received much less attention than changes during summer. Here, we synthesize the results from studies on the impacts of extreme winter weather events on polar heathland and lichen communities. Dwarf shrubs, mosses and soil arthropods were negatively impacted by extreme warming events while lichens showed variable responses to changes in extreme winter weather events. Snow mould formation underneath the snow may contribute to spatial heterogeneity in plant growth, arthropod communities and carbon cycling. Winter snow cover and depth will drive the reported impacts of winter climate change and add to spatial patterns in vegetation heterogeneity. The challenges ahead lie in obtaining better predictions on the snow patterns across the landscape and how these will be altered due to winter climate change.  相似文献

The goal of this work was to develop computational techniques for sulphates, nickel and copper accumulation in the snow in the local pollution zone. The main task was to reveal the peculiarities of formation and pollution of snow cover on the region with complex cross-relief. A digital cartographic model of aerotechnogenic pollution of snow cover in the landscapes of the local zone has been developed, based on five-year experimental data. Data regarding annual emissions from the industrial complex, information about distribution of wind and the sum of precipitation from meteostation "Nikel" for the winter period, allowed the model to ensure: * material presentation in the form of maps of water capacity and accumulation of sulphates, nickel and copper in the snow over any winter period in retrospective; * calculation of water capacity and accumulation of pollutants for watersheds and other natural-territorial complexes; * solution of the opposite problem about the determination of the emissions of sulphates, nickel and copper from the enterprise by measuring snow pollution in datum points. The model can be used in other northern regions of the Russian Federation with similar physical-geographical and climatic conditions. The relationships between the sum of precipitation and water capacity in the landscapes of the same type and also the relationships between pollution content in snow and relief, pollution content in snow and distance from the source of emissions, were used as the basis for the model.  相似文献

Gas and aerosol measurements were made during the Polar Sunrise Experiment 2000 at Alert, Nunavut (Canada), using two independent denuder/filter systems for sampling and subsequent analysis by ion chromatography. Twelve to forty-eight hour samples were taken during a winter (9–21 February 2000) and a spring (17 April–5 May 2000) campaign. During the spring campaign, samples were taken at two different heights above the snow surface to investigate concentration differences. Total particulate NO3 is the most abundant inorganic nitrogen compound during Arctic springtime (mean 137.4 ng m−3). The NO3 fluxes were calculated above the snow surface to help identify processes that control snow–atmosphere exchange of reactive nitrogen compounds. We suggest that the observed fluxes of coarse particle NO3 via snow deposition may contribute to the nitrogen inventory in the snow surface. Measurements of surface snow provide experimental data that constrain the contribution of dry deposition of coarse particle NO3 to <7%. Wet deposition in falling snow appears to be the major contributor to the nitrate input to the snow.  相似文献

The equilibrium partitioning of formaldehyde (HCHO) between air and snow was studied in a series of laboratory experiments conducted at −5°C, −15°C, and −35°C, in order to understand how partitioning of HCHO between air and polar snow varies with temperature, and thus seasonally on the ice sheet. Measured partitioning coefficients were 56, 93, and 245 mol l−1 atm−1 for −5°C, −15°C and −35°C, respectively, showing a similar trend as the values previously estimated from field observations. Estimates of the pseudo-first-order rate coefficient for air–snow exchange for the same three temperatures were 4.1×10−4, 1.1×10−4, and 1.1×10−5 s−1, respectively. This implies a time scale for air–snow equilibration of the order of hours to days for HCHO accumulated at or near the ice–air interface on snow grains. Comparing the current laboratory partitioning coefficients with those estimated from measurements of air and freshly fallen snow in Greenland during summer demonstrates that the snow is supersaturated and should degas HCHO to the surrounding air. During this degassing, polar snow should be a significant source of HCHO to the lower troposphere.  相似文献

In order to detect the presence of some volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons (VCHCs) and to understand their transport and deposition mechanism, superficial snow was sampled during two Italian ITASE (International Trans Antarctic Scientific Expedition) expeditions: the first traverse was carried out in 1998/1999 from Terra Nova Bay to Dome Concordia; the second traverse was carried out in 2001/2002 through Adélie, George V, Oates and Northern Victoria Lands. Some VCHCs (chloroform; 1,1,1-trichloroethane; tetrachloromethane; 1,1,2-trichloroethylene; tetrachloroethylene) were analysed using a highly sensitive and selective hyphenated technique composed of a purge-and-trap injector coupled to a gas chromatograph with a mass spectrometric detector (PTI-GC-MS) operating in SIM mode. Investigated VCHCs were present in all analysed snow samples with concentration levels of several units, tens, or sometimes hundreds of ng kg(-1). VCHC snow concentration levels remained approximately constant with changing distance from the coast and the comparison between fresh and aged snow did not show any substantial differences; on the basis of this evidence marine aerosol and dry deposition may be rejected as principal VCHC transport and deposition mechanism hypotheses. VCHC concentration levels in Antarctic snow samples were comparable to or greater than those found in snow from temperate zones.  相似文献

The delta-Eddington radiation transfer model is used to calculate actinic fluxes and photolysis rates within the snow pack during the ALERT 2000 field campaign. Actinic fluxes are enhanced within the snow pack due to the high albedo of snow and conversion of direct light to diffuse light. The conversion of direct to diffuse light is highly dependent on the solar zenith angle, as demonstrated by model calculations. The optical properties of Alert snow are modeled as 100 μm radius ice spheres with impurity added to increase the absorption coefficient over that of pure water ice. Using these optical properties, the model achieves good agreement with observations of irradiance within the snow pack. The model is used to calculate the total actinic flux as a function of solar zenith angle and depth for either clear sky or cloudy conditions. The actinic flux is then used to calculate photochemical production of nitrogen oxides from nitrate photolysis assuming that nitrate in snow has the same absorption cross section and quantum yield in snow as in aqueous solution. Assuming all photo-produced nitrogen oxides are released to the gas phase, we derive a maximal flux of nitrogen oxides (NOx+HONO and possibly other products) from the snow pack. The value of this maximal flux depends critically on the assumed quantum yield for production of NO2, which is unknown in ice. Depending on the assumed quantum yield, the calculated maximal flux varies between values four times smaller than the observed NOx+HONO flux to five times larger than the NOx+HONO flux. Therefore, it appears that the calculated flux is in approximate agreement with the observations with a great need for improved understanding of nitrogen photochemistry in snow.  相似文献

Projected increases in winter temperature due to future climate change may cause decreased snow accumulation at lower and intermediate altitudes in northern temperate regions. The resulting changes in soil temperature and water regime may affect the leaching of total organic carbon (TOC) and total organic nitrogen (TON). We manipulated the snow cover of small headwater catchments in a montane heathland area of southern Norway to quantify its effect on concentrations and fluxes of TOC and TON in runoff. Manipulations included snow removal, to promote soil frost, and insulation, to prevent soil frost. Snow removal resulted in increased TOC and TON concentrations, but decreased fluxes. Insulation caused a slight decrease in concentrations and fluxes of TOC. Our experiments show that a change in snow depth, and thus soil temperature, is not likely to have serious effects on TOC and TON leaching in the montane heathland area studied.  相似文献

Two novel gas-tight snow samplers (snow-can and snow-tube) are presented and the performance of the snow-can in a field trial was assessed. The methodology for the sampling, extraction and analysis of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are detailed. These samplers allow the various components of a snow sample to be analysed separately; these included the meltwater (MW), particulate matter (GFF) and vapour in the headspace (HS). Snow samples collected on the Punta Indren glacier in the Italian Alps revealed the occurrence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organochlorine pesticides (OC). Replicate samples of the same snow type were undertaken as a test of sampling precision. Relative standard deviations (RSDs) for SigmaPCBs and SigmaPAHs were approximately 30% and approximately 35% respectively. The lowest precision was found for the particle-laden snow, notably for the heavier PCB homologues. For the chlorinated compounds, the pesticides lindane and endosulfan-I had the highest levels in snow, with mean concentrations of 402 and 103 pgl(-1) (snow meltwater) respectively. The vapour present in the headspace (HS) comprised a minor component of a collected sample for all compounds, but HS concentrations for three lighter PAHs gave good agreement with those calculated based on their dimensionless Henry's law constants. This suggests that volatilisation during melting of aged snow-can be reasonably predicted with knowledge of the temperature-dependent Henry's law constant.  相似文献

The chemical composition and pH of 30 fresh snow samples collected during December 1986 to May 1987 at Gulmarg (34 degrees 03' N, 74 degrees 24' E, 2655 m above mean sea level), a remote place in north India, were studied. The snow samples were, by and large, alkaline in nature and were largely influenced by non-marine aerosols. The concentrations of cations (Ca(2+), K(+) and Mg(2+)) were more than the anions (SO(2-)(4) and NO(-)(3)). Factor analysis indicated that most of the ionic components were transported into the region during the period of measurements. The transport of ionic components could be attributed to the passage of western disturbances over this region. The comparison of concentrations of anions and cations in the snow samples at Gulmarg with those reported from a few countries in the west revealed that the composition of Gulmarg snow largely differs in the concentrations of cations rather than anions. Among the cations, the concentration of Ca(2+) was high at Gulmarg and this could be responsible for buffering the pH of snow in the alkaline range.  相似文献

The presence of well-known atmospheric pollutants is regularly screened for in large towns but knowledge about the effects of mixtures of different pollutants and especially their genotoxic potential is largely missing. Since falling snow collects pollutants from the air, melted snow samples could be suitable for evaluating potential genotoxicity. For this purpose the Allium cepa anaphase–telophase test was used to analyse melted snow samples from Belgrade, the capital city of Serbia. Samples of snow were taken at two sites, characterized by differences in pollution intensity, in three successive years. At the more polluted site the analyses showed a very high degree of both toxicity and genotoxicity in the first year of the study corresponding to the effects of the known mutagen used as the positive control. At the other site the situation was much better but not without warning signals. The results showed that standard analyses for the presence of certain contaminants in the air do not give an accurate picture of the possible consequences of urban air pollution because the genotoxic potential remains hidden. The A. cepa test has been demonstrated to be very convenient for evaluation of air pollution through analyses of melted snow samples.  相似文献

The spatial, temporal, source and physical controls on chloride, nitrate, sulfate and sodium in south Greenland snow are presented in this paper based on chemical data from snowpit and fresh snow samples. The snowpit samples cover the period June 1982–June 1984 and the fresh surface snow samples represent one storm event sampled over a 38-km traverse from Dye 3 to the southwest. Oxygen isotope dated records of chloride, sodium, excess sulfate and nitrate are discussed with respect to input timing and source. Notably the anthropogenic influx of excess sulfate is apparent in addition to an influx of excess sulfate that coincides with and is attributed to the arrival of the El Chichon cloud in S Greenland. The El Chichon event is also marked by highs in chloride and nitrate. Examination of fresh surface snow reveals geographic, temperature and moisture controls on deposition. Some excess sulfate close to Dye 3 can be attributed to local pollution.  相似文献

Reduction of divalent mercury and subsequent emission to the atmosphere has been identified as loss process from surface snow, but its mechanism and importance are still unclear. The amount of mercury that stays in the snow pack until spring is of significance, because during snow melt it may be released to the aquatic environment and enter the food web. Better knowledge of its fate in snow might further assist the interpretation of ice core data as paleo-archive. Experiments were performed under well-controlled laboratory conditions in a coated wall flow tube at atmospheric pressure and irradiated with light between 300 nm and 420 nm. Our results show that the presence of benzophenone and of oxalic acid significantly enhances the release of mercury from the ice film during irradiation, whereas humic acid is less potent to promote the reduction. Further it was found that oxygen or chloride, and acidic conditions lowered the photolytically induced mercury release in the presence of benzophenone, while the release got larger with increasing temperatures.  相似文献

Gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) concentration measurements were made during the Alert 2000 campaign in Alert, Nunavut, Canada, between February and May 2000. GEM exhibits dramatic mercury depletion events (MDE) concurrently with ozone in the troposphere during the Arctic springtime. Using a cold regions pyrolysis unit, it was confirmed that GEM is converted to more reactive mercury species during the MDEs. It was determined that on average 48% of this converted GEM was recovered through pyrolysis suggesting that the remaining converted GEM is deposited on the snow surfaces. Samples collected during this campaign showed an approximate 20 fold increase in mercury concentrations in the snow from the dark to light periods. Vertical gradient air profiling experiments were conducted. In the non-depletion periods GEM was found to be invariant in the air column between surface and 1–2 m heights. During a depletion period, GEM was found to be invariant in the air column except at the surface where a noticeable increase in the GEM concentration was observed. Concurrent ozone concentration profiles showed a small gradient in the air column but a sharp decrease in ozone concentration at the surface. Other profile studies showed a 41% average GEM concentration difference between the interstitial air in the snow pack and ∼2 m above the surface suggesting that GEM is emitted from the snow pack. Further profile studies showed that during MDEs surface level GEM exhibits spikes of mercury concentrations that were over double the ambient GEM concentrations. It is thought that the solar radiation may reduce reactive mercury that is deposited on the snow surface during a MDE back to its elemental form which is then increasingly released from the snow pack as the temperature increases during the day. This is observed when wind speeds are very low.  相似文献

The study of mercury (Hg) cycle in Arctic regions is a major subject of concern due to the dramatic increases of Hg concentrations in ecosystem in the last few decades. The causes of such increases are still in debate, and an important way to improve our knowledge on the subject is to study the exchanges of Hg between atmosphere and snow during springtime. We organized an international study from 10 April to 10 May 2003 in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, in order to assess these fluxes through measurements and derived calculations.Snow-to-air emission fluxes of Hg were measured using the flux chamber technique between ∼0 and 50 ng m−2 h−1. A peak in Gaseous Elemental Mercury (GEM) emission flux from the snow to the atmosphere has been measured just few hours after an Atmospheric Mercury Depletion Event (AMDE) recorded on 22 April 2004. Surprisingly, this peak in GEM emitted after this AMDE did not correspond to any increase in Hg concentration in snow surface. A peak in GEM flux after an AMDE was observed only for this single event but not for the four other AMDEs recorded during this spring period. In the snow pack which is seasonal and about 40 cm depth above permafrost, Hg is involved in both production and incorporation processes. The incorporation was evaluated to ∼5–40 pg m2 h. Outside of AMDE periods, Hg flux from the snow surface to the atmosphere was the consequence of GEM production in the air of snow and was about ∼15–50 ng m−2 h−1, with a contribution of deeper snow layers evaluated to ∼0.3–6.5 ng m−2 h−1. The major part of GEM production is then mainly a surface phenomenon. The internal production of GEM was largely increasing when snow temperatures were close to melting, indicating a chemical process occurring in the quasi-liquid layer at the surface of snow grains.  相似文献
