Species-specific sedimentation and sinking velocities of diatoms   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
U. Passow 《Marine Biology》1991,108(3):449-455
Sedimentation rates were determined for various diatom species, and both average and maximum sinking velocities of sedimenting diatoms were calculated during a spring bloom investigation in the central Baltic Sea in 1986. Up to 25 and 50% of theChaetoceros spp. andThalassiosira levanderi populations, respectively, sedimented daily. Daily sedimentation rates of other diatoms, dinoflagellates andMesodinium rubrum, however, were less than 1% of their respective standing stocks. TheT. levanderi population was divided into two subpopulations: while one was sinking, the second was actively dividing (recognizable by paired-cell stages) with a specific growth rate of >0.2 to 0.3 d–1. These paired cells were never found in sediment trap samples. The average sinking velocity ofChaetoceros spp. was 15 to 30 m d–1; that ofT. levanderi was higher. The maximum sinking velocity of cells was at least 70 m d–1. According to these observations, the formation of aggregates (which enhances sinking velocity), and their sedimentation, represent a highly selective process. This indicates that diatom aggregates do not act as roving filters, sweeping the water clear while sinking.  相似文献

Distribution, abundance and age of diapause eggs from three species of calanoid copepods (in particular from Acartia spp. most likely Acartia tonsa, and Centropages hamatus and less numerous from Temora longicornis) were recorded in sediment profiles by enumerating hatched nauplii from incubated sediment samples. Phytoplankton pigments and 210Pb and 137Cs analyses indicated that the sedimentation regimes were different between two southern and two northern stations of the island Funen, Denmark. Significant variations in vertical distribution, abundance and mortality of diapause eggs were found between the stations. Dating of the sediment cores suggested a ~70-year maximum age of viable eggs on the northernmost stations, and ~28 year at the southernmost stations. The eggs exhibited a significantly higher mortality rate at the southernmost stations compared with the northernmost, 0.35–0.53 year−1 vs. 0.07–0.08 year−1 with no systematic pattern among species. The differences in abundance, mortality and age of the diapause eggs are suggested to be due to the sediment characteristics in which they are buried.  相似文献

Since the substantial loss of subtidal eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) in the 1930s, seagrass beds in the Wadden Sea are limited to the intertidal zone and dominated by Z. noltii Hornem. This study deals with the effect of vegetated tidal flats on quantities of mobile epifauna and proves empirically the function of seagrass canopies as a refuge for marine animals remaining in the intertidal zone at ebb tide. Drop-trap samples were taken in the Sylt-Rømø Bight, a shallow tidal basin in the northern Wadden Sea, on vegetated and unvegetated tidal flats during July and August 2002, and during the entire growth period of Z. noltii from May to September in 2003. The species composition in Z. noltii and bare sand flats showed minor differences since only two isopod species (Idotea baltica and I. chelipes) occurred on Z. noltii flats exclusively. Juvenile shore crabs (Carcinus maenas L.), brown shrimps (Crangon crangon L.) and common gobies (Pomatoschistus microps Krøyer) were also found abundantly on bare sand flats. However, the results showed significantly higher abundances and production of these dominant species on vegetated tidal flats. Additionally, the analyses of faunal size classes indicated higher percentages of small individuals in the seagrass bed during the entire sampling period. Despite drastic diurnal fluctuations of dissolved oxygen at low tide, faunal density in the residual water layer remaining in seagrass canopies at ebb tide was found to be consistently higher than that found in artificially created tide-pool units. Although species composition of mobile epifauna did not basically differ between vegetated and unvegetated tidal flats, Z. noltii beds are considered to contribute quantitatively to the function of tidal flats, as an extended juvenile habitat for some of the most important species of the Wadden Sea food web.Communicated by O. Many sponge species are considered to be cosmopolitan. However, the systematics of marine sponges are very difficult because of the paucity of taxonomically useful characters, and hence the apparently cosmopolitan nature of many species may be simply a consequence of this. In this paper, geographically distant populations of two pairs of cosmopolitan calcareous sponges of the genusClathrina were compared genetically.C. clathrus andC. cerebrum were collected by SCUBA diving between January and March 1989 from two localities: the Mediterranean Sea at La Vesse, near Marseille, Frances, at 9 to 12 m depth, and from the South West Atlantic at Arraial do Cabo, about 200 km east of Rio de Janeiro, at 2 to 10 m depth. Very high levels of gene divergence were found between the allegedly conspecific populations. The levels of genetic identity,I, observed are so low (I=0.128 and 0.287) that the populations clearly cannot be considered conspecific. New species names ofC. aurea sp. nov. andC. brasiliensis sp. nov. are therefore assigned to the southwest Atlantic counterparts ofC. clathrus andC. cerebrum, respectively. It is concluded that, at least for the species studied, and probably for many other species in taxonomically difficult groups, the actual distributions of single species may be far more geographically restricted than is generally assumed.  相似文献

Egg production and hatching success of the copepod Temora longicornis were measured in laboratory experiments and in the field (North Sea). In the laboratory, ingestion of four algal species (Thalassiosira weissflogii, Phaeocystis globosa, Isochrysis sp. and Dunaliella tertiolecta) was followed and the content of fatty acids in the algae was determined. The two food types (T. weissflogii and Isochrysis sp.) that provided the highest ingestion of carbon and long chain fatty acids also resulted in the highest egg production rate (Er) and hatching success (H%). In contrast, D. tertiolecta led to both low ingestion of carbon and long chain fatty acids, resulting in low reproductive success. There was a positive relationship between the amount of eicosapentaenoic fatty acid [20:5(n-3), EPA] ingested and Er and H%, and of the ratio between docosahexaenoic and eicosapentaenoic fatty acid [22:6(n-3)/20:5(n-3), DHA/EPA] in the ingested food and H%. In the field, chlorophyll a and specific fatty acids were measured and protists were enumerated, in order to investigate the link between these factors and the reproductive success of T. longicornis. Hatching time was found to be related to temperature and exceeded 120 h at 6°C. No relationship was found between chlorophyll a and reproductive success (Er or H%). Er correlated with the concentration of diatoms and ciliates, which were the dominating protists in early spring, indicating that food quantity was the limiting factor for Er. As in the laboratory experiments, H% was dependent on the fatty acid DHA and the ratio of DHA/EPA, which indicates that the quality of eggs (H%) is linked to the quality of food.Communicated by M. Benthic resting eggs of rotifers, cladocerans and calanoid copepods were studied at two sites with different hydrographical and sediment properties off the SW coast of Finland, the northern Baltic Sea between 1991 and 1993. Vertical distribution of the resting eggs in the sediment was studied down to 10 cm depth, and hatching of the eggs extracted from different 1-cm thick sediment layers was experimentally tested. The larvae of eight mesozooplankton taxa emerged from the eggs: Calanoida (mostlyAcartia bifilosa), cladoceransBosmina spp.,Daphnia spp.,Evadne nordmanni, andPodon spp. (mostlyP. polyphemoides), and rotifersSynchaeta spp.,Keratella spp. andAsplanchna priodonta. Some calanoid and cladoceran eggs hatched after 7 mo storage of the sediment at 3°C. A few calanoid and cladoceran eggs hatched from the 8 to 10 cm deep sediment layer. Their age, estimated by means of137Cs analysis, was ca. 8 to 10 yr. Vertical distribution of the benthic eggs reflected the different sediment structures of the study sites. The eggs of all zooplankton taxa were more stratified in the laminated sediment than in the disturbed sediment. We suggest that the intensity of deep water mixing is the key factor for regulating the vertical distribution and hatching probability of mesozooplankton resting eggs, since it largely determines the stratification of the sedimenting material, distribution of oxygen within the sediment, and the living conditions of benthic animals causing bioturbation.  相似文献

More than 6000 individuals of the snailLittorina littorea L., from 6 different localities on the coast of the German Bay (North Sea), were examined for larval trematodes by crushing their shells, an additional 6000 by isolation in small quantities of sea water. Six species of larval trematodes were found inL. littorea and described: Notocotylid larva —Cercaria lebouri Stunkard, 1932; Cercaria ofHimasthla elongata (Mehlis, 1831); Cercaria ofPodocotyle atomon (Rudolphi, 1802); Cercaria ofRenicola roscovita (Stunkard, 1932) n. comb.; Metacercaria ofMicrophallus pygmaeus (Levinsen, 1881); Cercaria ofCryptocotyle lingua (Creplin, 1825). Considering the large number of investigated snails, the trematode fauna ofL. littorea in this area is assumed to be completely known. The life cycles ofHimasthla elongata andRenicola roscovita are described. Larvae of the different trematode species show differential preferences for distinct size groups of snail hosts. Juvenile snails are not infected. No correlation exists between infection rates and sex of the hosts. Quantitative aspects of multiple infections are calculated and discussed. The incidence of larval trematodes in the investigated localities differs. Information is presented on seasonal variations of infestations and their possible causes.  相似文献

The ABC-method proposed by Warwick (1986) for detecting pollution effects on marine zoobenthic communities, was tested on distribution patterns of numbers and biomass among species in macrozoobenthos samples taken annually for 13 yr in a uniform way at 15 tidal-flat stations in the western part of the Dutch Wadden Sea. Along the margins of the tidal-flat area studied, where exposition to either drainage or water movements is extreme, the k-dominance plots for numbers were generally situated above those for biomass. In these areas values for biomass and species richness were relatively low and a few small-sized species such asCorophium volutator andHydrobia ulvae were very numerous. In the central part of the area, where environmental conditions are less severe, values for biomass and species richness were higher. Biomass was dominated by large adults ofMya arenaria, Mytilus edulis and/orArenicola marina. However, in only a restricted part of this area were plots for numbers consistently below biomass plots. In most of the central area high numbers ofH. ulvae occasionally occurred, causing plots for numbers to be situated above those for biomass during such periods. There appears to be no reason to interprete a high abundance ofH. ulvae as a sign of pollution or any other kind of disturbance or stress. It is concluded that the ABC method cannot be applied to tidal flat communities without reference to long-term and spatial series of control samples. In areas where such smallsized and sometimes numerous species asH. ulvae occur in strongly fluctuating numbers, the method appears useless for assessing the pollution status of a benthic community.  相似文献

Benthic filter feeding macrofauna organisms may be an important factor linking sediment and water column. Transport of water and concomitantly of suspended matter is directly related to the size of the benthic filter feeding population. This paper aims to determine the potential for water transport by the bivalve Mya arenaria along a coastal stretch of roughly 100 km length in the southern Baltic Sea. Quantification of population filtration rates specific to the area is based on distribution, abundance and biomass of M. arenaria and calculated according to previously published filtration rate–biomass relations. Calculated rates range up to >8 m3 m–2 day–1 (at 5–20 m water depth in sandy sediment) with the potential to locally process a volume of water equivalent to the water column within <1 day. Data from 1991–2002 at one site suggest that the area-specific potential population filtration rate remains remarkably constant in time despite changes in population structure of M. arenaria. The related impact on pore water exchange within the permeable sediment associated with the leakage of water from the gape of M. arenaria valves is discussed.Communicated by L. Reproduction and growth of the dominant copepods Calanus finmarchicus, C. glacialis, C. hyperboreus and Pseudocalanus minutus were studied on transects across the sea ice zone of the northern Barents Sea in May and June 1997. C. glacialis and C. finmarchicus were numerically dominant and also the largest component of the biomass. C. hyperboreus was rather rare. Moderate levels of phytoplankton and eventually high concentrations of ice algae supported maximum egg production rates of 53.6 and 48.5 eggs female–1 day–1 of C. glacialis in May and June, respectively. Results of incubation experiments were supported by a tremendous abundance of C. glacialis eggs in the water column ranging from 7×103 to 4.4×104 m–2 in May and from 9.8×103 to a maximum of 9.7×104 m–2 in June. In contrast, C. finmarchicus spawned only in the vicinity of the ice edge, at a maximum rate of 30 eggs female–1 day–1. Egg sacs of P. minutus were often observed in the preserved samples, but contained only few eggs, which may be due to loss during sampling. The presence of considerable concentrations of young stages in May and June indicated successful recruitment of C. glacialis and P. minutus. Back calculation using published stage duration estimates indicates March/April as the begin of the reproductive and growth period for these species under the first-year ice of the Barents Sea. Hence, secondary production in the study area starts at the same time as in open water regions and polynyas in the northern North Atlantic. Although the role of ice algae in the nutrition of copepods was not clarified here, the significant relationship between phytoplankton chlorophyll and egg production of C. glacialis suggests that high reproductive activity has already been achieved at moderate food concentrations.Communicated by O. Phosphate uptake by intertidal algae in relation to zonation and season   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The removal of phosphate from ambient seawater by whole plants of five species of fucoid algae, collected from the east coast of N. Ireland in 1988 and 1989, was followed over 6-h periods. A transient uptake pattern was observed forPelvetia canaliculata (L.) Dcne. et Thuret,Fucus spiralis L.,F. vesiculosus L. andF. serratus L., consisting of an initial period of high uptake, followed by a phase of zero uptake and then a period at an intermediate rate.Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis had a constant slow rate of uptake over 6 h. The initial uptake rate ofF. spiralis was significantly greater than that of any other species. Phosphate uptake over a 2-h period was measured at concentrations ranging from that of ambient seawater to 25µg-at. l–1 for whole plants ofF. spiralis andF. serratus, using a large scale batch method. A small scale batch method was used for whole plants ofP. canaliculata and sections of the other four species investigated. Uptake abilities of the algae at low concentrations of phosphate were compared using the parameterV 1 (the uptake rate at 1µg-at. l–1) and at high concentrations usingV max, the maximum uptake rate. These kinetic parameters of uptake were calculated using a method that avoids bias and permits statistical evaluation of the results. The fucoid algae studied could be divided into two distinct groups on the basis of their abilities to take up phosphate from seawater.P. canaliculata andA. nodosum had low values ofV 1 in winter, which were also correlated with their positions on the shore and did not vary between winter and summer. TheFucus species had higher values ofV 1 in winter, which were also correlated with their positions on the shore. In summer, however,V 1-values for these species decreased and no longer correlated with their shore heights. TheV max-value forF. spiralis was higher in winter than in summer but was signifcantly greater than that of any other species at all times of year. The ecological significance ofV max is discussed in relation to nutrient limitation and the possible occurrence of patches of high nutrient concentration in the intertidal environment.  相似文献

Abundance, stage composition and reproductive parameters (egg production, egg viability, proportion of spawning females) of the four copepod species Acartia clausi, Centropages hamatus, C. typicus and Temora longicornis were measured at the long term sampling station Helgoland Roads (German Bight, southern North Sea) from September 2003 to May 2004 to study their overwintering strategies. A. clausi was overwintering as females with arrested reproduction from November to January. T. longicornis, which is known to produce resting eggs in the North Sea, had a pelagic population with all developmental stages present during winter and reproductive rates closely related to food concentrations. Although their females produced eggs in response to ambient food conditions, both C. hamatus and C. typicus were rare in the pelagic. The C. hamatus population returned in May, probably from resting eggs, whereas C. typicus depended on advection. The Centropages species seemed to be less adapted to pelagic life in winter than A. clausi and T. longicornis. Sporadic occurrence of large numbers of nauplii and young copepodids of A. clausi and Centropages spp. pointed to different overwintering strategies or more successful survival in adjacent regions and advection of them into the waters around Helgoland island. While A. clausi was decoupled from environmental conditions in late autumn and winter, the other species were able to respond to variations in the food environment. Thus, egg production of T. longicornis increased during an unusual autumn diatom bloom.  相似文献

The current study determined behavioral and electrophysiological photosensitivities for three species of mesopelagic crustaceans: Pasiphaea multidentata Esmark, 1866 (Decapoda: Pasiphaeidae), Sergestes arcticus Kröyer, 1855 (Decapoda: Sergestidae), and Meganyctiphanes norvegica M. Sars, 1857 (Euphausiacea: Euphausiidae). In addition, in situ quantifications of the species vertical distributions in relation to downwelling irradiances were also determined in two locations in the northwest Atlantic Ocean, Wilkinson Basin (WB) and Oceanographer Canyon (OC). Data are from six 2-week cruises between June and September from 1995 to 2001. P. multidentata and M. norvegica were the most abundant large crustaceans in WB, and S. arcticus and M. norvegica were the most abundant large crustaceans in OC. The behavioral light sensitivity thresholds of P. multidentata and M. norvegica from WB were both 107 photons cm–2 s–1 and those of S. arcticus and M. norvegica from OC were both 108 photons cm–2 s–1. Electrophysiologically, P. multidentata was significantly more sensitive than M. norvegica from either location, S. arcticus was significantly more sensitive than M. norvegica from OC, and M. norvegica from WB was significantly more sensitive than M. norvegica from OC. A correlation was found between electrophysiologically measured photosensitivity and downwelling irradiance, with the most sensitive species, P. multidentata and S. arcticus, associated with the lowest irradiance at daytime depths. The photosensitivities of M. norvegica collected from the clearer waters of OC were significantly lower than those of individuals collected from the more turbid WB waters. These results indicate that downwelling irradiance has a significant impact on interspecies and intraspecies vertical distribution patterns in the mesopelagic realm.Communicated by J.P. An intensive study of the spatial distribution ofNereis virens (Sars) andNephtys caeca (Fabricius) was conducted during the spring and autumn of 1986 in the lower St. Lawrence estuary. Statistical analysis showed that spatial variations in density, individual body weight and sexual maturity, particularly in the case ofNereis virens, are correlated with the intertidal level, with certain sediment characteristics, and with the thickness of the colonizable sediment layer. The density ofN. virens increases in an offshore-onshore direction, whereas that ofNephtys caeca decreases in the same direction. For both species, mean body weight increases downshore from the upper intertidal level. Other specific relationships exist in relation to sediment characteristics. Sexually matureNereis virens are found only at the lower intertidal level; sexual maturity inNephtys caeca was not studied. There were no changes in spatial distribution patterns between spring and autumn. The spatial distribution ofNereis virens parallels depth contours and may reflect its ability to inhabit environments which become more physically unstable in an offshore-onshore direction. This spatial distribution is consistent with a model whereby larvae are recruited in the upper intertidal zone and juveniles migrate downshore.  相似文献

Competitive interactions between germlings of Ascophyllum nodosum (L) Le Jolis and Fucus vesiculosus L. were studied both in the laboratory and on a shore of the Isle of Man, in the Irish Sea. Both intra- and interspecific competition were investigated by comparing the performance of algal germlings both in monocultures and mixed populations of the two species. The growth of germlings of both species reduced with increasing density. F. vesiculosus always grew faster than Ascophyllum and did best in mixed cultures, whereas Ascophyllum did least well when mixed with Fucus germlings. Clearly the adverse effects of F. vesiculosus on A. nodosum were greater than those of Ascophyllum cohorts. At the same total density, the survival and growth of Ascophyllum declined with an increasing proportion of Fucus germlings, implying that poor recruitment of A. nodosum results from strong competition with F. vesiculosus. However, under desiccation stress on the shore, F. vesiculosus enhanced the survival of A. nodosum at the early germling stage even though competition may occur again at the late stage. Thus, whether interactions between germlings take the form of competition or facilitation depends on the environmental conditions.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe  相似文献

Heterocapsa triquetra (Ehrenberg) Stein is a phototrophic marine dinoflagellate with wide coastal distribution. It is known to be capable of mixotrophy and diel vertical migration. The species was particularly abundant in the Gulf of Finland (the Baltic Sea) during the summers of 1996 and 1998, leading to discolouration of water on the south-west coast of Finland. Large-scale (50 m3) coastal mesocosm experiments in the north-west Gulf of Finland (the Baltic Sea) in the summers of 1996 and 1998 with daily mineral nutrient additions provoked a biomass increase of phytoplankton dominated by H. triquetra. From the first days of the experiment temporary cysts of H. triquetra were found in the bottom sediment water of the mesocosms. Maximum temporary cyst production rates reached values up to 20×106 cysts m–2 day–1, accounting for <1% of the depth-integrated motile population size. The environmental features favouring temporary cyst production remain uncertain; zooplankton grazing and nutrient stress are potential factors. Temporary cysts of H. triquetra were observed in a unialgal culture (f/2 medium) isolated in summer 1999 from Eel Pond (Woods Hole, Mass., USA).Communicated by M. Kühl, Helsingør  相似文献

Pontellid copepods were collected from the surface waters of a tidal front region in the Bungo Channel (the Inland Sea of Japan) in June 1986 to examine the relationship between the morphology of cephalic appendages and gut contents. In particular, two dominant species,Labidocera japonica Mori andPontellopsis yamadae Mori, were compared in detail. Large setae on the second maxillae ofL. japonica possessed two rows of setules at right angles to each seta along its inner margin except a terminal part which was serrated, whereas the inner margin of those setae ofP. yamadae was entirely serrated. Judging from the structure of the mouthparts, especially the second maxillae, the former species seems to employ both suspension and raptorial feeding modes, in contrast to the latter, which may use only the raptorial mode of feeding. InP. yamadae, the first maxilla and the maxilliped are also modified for carnivory. Gut content analysis supported the morphological evidence for feeding differences, and revealed thatP. yamadae is a carnivore preying mainly on copepodids whileL. japonica feeds omnivorously on copepod nauplii and phytoplankton particles. Since the mouthpart structures of congeners are quite similar to each other, the feeding behavior and habits might also be similar. Within the family Pontellidae, the generaAnomalocera, Calanopia, Epilabidocera, andPontella have mouthpart structures similar to those ofLabidocera, whereas the genusPontellina resemblesPontellopsis. Morphological similarities would suggest that the first group of genera employs both suspension and raptorial feeding modes, and thatPontellina is a carnivore likePontellopsis.  相似文献

Four species ofPhotololigo were identified using allozymes from the northern waters of Australia between the North West Shelf (114°00E) and Brisbane (153°00E). Two of these species fitted the gross morphology ofP. edulis documented from Japan and two taxa shared the distinguishing features ofP. chinensis. F-statistic analyses revealed no major population genetic structuring in any of the species over the geographical range sampled and all populations were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Given that the distributions of the species appear to be correlated with depth, at least during the austral summer, this panmixia is considered to reflect extensive gene flow through longshore movement of these squid. It is suggested that depth constraints, or factors associated with depth, act as effective barriers to gene flow and, therefore, provide mechanisms for allopatric speciation in this genus. The data from northern Australia indicate that the current view thatLoligo species have broad distributions may need revision and that a number of widespread taxa (such asP. edulis andP. chinensis) are likely to comprise a series of hitherto unrecognised allopatric sibling species. Heterozygosity levels were low for all species exceptPhotololigo sp. 1, which had a restricted deep-water distribution. These data are concordant with the habitat specialist-generalist model, which is discussed.Contribution No. 654 from the Australian Institute of Marine Science  相似文献

Factors were examined that affect survival and growth of two common species of large foraminifera from the Red Sea,Amphisorus hemprichii Ehrenberg andAmphistegina lobifera Larsen, 1976. The former is host for dinoflagellate and the latter for diatom zooxanthellae. Experimental conditions were modeled on conditions at 25 m during spring at Wadi Taba, Gulf of Elat, Israel, the season and site where the experimental organisms were collected between 1983 and 1988. The two species responded quite differently in nutritional experiments.A. hemprichii grew, on average, 0.270 mm in diameter in 3 mo on a diet ofNitzschia subcommunis Hustedt,Chlorella sp. (clone AT) orCylindrotheca closterium Rabenhorst isolated from their native habitat. Unfed controls did not grow. In contrast, unfed populations ofA. lobifera grew as well or better than those that were fed unialgal diets. Growth of both species was enhanced on particular mixed algal diets. Both species required photosynthetically active symbionts. Even when fed weekly and supplied with nutrients, neither species survived in the dark. All individuals ofA. hemprichii died after 8 wk incubation in the dark;A. lobifera survived longer, but all were dead by 13 wk. The highest growth rate ofA. hemprichii (0.037 mm wk–1) was obtained when they were fed, the medium was enriched, and the medium was changed weekly. All other conditions being the same, growth rate dropped to 0.009 mm wk–1 when the medium was changed every 3 wk. In contrast,A. lobifera grew fastest when the medium was changed every 3 wk. Food or enrichment with nitrate or phosphate did not stimulate growth (0.03 mm wk–1) over that of the controls. Specimens ofMarginopora kudakajimensis Gudmundsson from Japan, another dinoflagellate-bearing species, were also tested. They grew best (0.02 mm wk–1) when cultured in light, in media enriched with nitrate and phosphate changed weekly, and fed. All three species withdrew nitrate and phosphate from the medium in chemostat experiments.  相似文献

Subitaneous eggs of the copepod Acartia bifilosa were incubated at low oxygen concentrations and in anoxic conditions to study the induction of dormancy and the longevity of the resting eggs. Eggs were incubated in hypoxic conditions for 8 or 10 days, and also in anoxic conditions for 8–441 days. After the anoxic and hypoxic incubations, the unhatched eggs were subsequently incubated in normal oxygen conditions to reveal the viability of the eggs. Low oxygen concentrations (< 0.17 ml l–1) induced dormancy in the eggs: they did not hatch at these concentrations in the hypox experiments but did hatch afterwards. Eggs survived well in anoxic conditions: after 10 months at 4°C, approximately 40% of the eggs still hatched, while some eggs survived in anoxic conditions for a year at 13°C, which is longer than hitherto reported for subitaneous eggs of any copepod species. Also, sediment that contained eggs of copepods was stored in the laboratory to reveal the long-term survival of the eggs. When incubated after 1.8 years storage, more than 40% of A. bifilosa eggs hatched. The study shows that subitaneous eggs may also be used as a survival strategy on seasonal time scales. This may partly explain why A. bifilosa does not produce diapause eggs in the present study area in the northern Baltic Sea.Communicated by M. Kühl, Helsingør  相似文献
