Otolith microstructure and microchemistry were examined in juveniles of American (Anguilla rostrata) and European (A. anguilla) eels. Otolith increment width markedly increased from age 132 to 191 d (156 ± 18.9 d; mean ± SD) in A. rostrata and 163 to 235 d (198 ± 27.4 d; mean ± SD) in A. anguilla, both of which were coincident with drastic decreases in otolith Sr:Ca ratios, suggesting that metamorphosis from leptocephalus to glass eel began at those ages in each species. The duration of metamorphosis was estimated to be 18 to 52 d from otolith microstructure, for both species studied. Ages at recruitment were 171 to 252 d (206 ± 22.3 d; mean ± SD) in A. rostrata and 220 to 281 d (249 ± 22.6 d; mean ± SD) in A. anguilla. In these two species, positive linear relationships were found in ages between the beginning of metamorphosis and recruitment, suggesting that early metamorphosing larvae recruited at younger ages. Duration of the leptocephalus stage to recruitment in A. anguilla was about 40 d longer than that in A. rostrata. The geographical segregation between the two species in the Atlantic Ocean seems to be involved in the differences in the duration of the leptocephalus stage (age at metamorphosis). Seasonally recurrent and persistent hypoxic events in semi-enclosed coastal waters are characterized by bottom-water dissolved oxygen (d.o.) concentrations of < 2.0 ml l−1. Shifts in the distribution patterns of zooplankters in association with these events have been documented, but the mechanisms responsible for these shifts have not been investigated. This study assessed interspecific differences in responses to hypoxia by several species of calanoid copepods common off Turkey Point, Florida, USA: Labidocera aestiva (Wheeler) (a summer/fall species), Acartia tonsa (Dana) (a ubiquitous year-round species), and Centropages hamatus (Lilljeborg) (a winter/spring species). Under conditions of moderate to severe hypoxia 24-h survival experiments were conducted for adults and nauplii of these species from August 1994 to October 1995. Experiments on adults used a flow-through system to maintain constant d.o. concentrations. Adults of A. tonsa showed no decline in survival with d.o. as low as 1.0 ml l−1, sharp declines in survival at d.o. = 0.9 to 0.6 ml l−1, and 100% mortality with d.o. = 0.5 ml l−1. Adults of L. aestiva and C. hamatus were more sensitive to oxygen depletion: both species experienced significant decreases in survival for d.o. = 1.0 ml l−1. Nauplii of L. aestiva and A. tonsa showed no significant mortality with d.o. = 1.1 to 1.5 ml␣l−1 and d.o. = 0.24 to 0.5 ml l−1, respectively. In addition, experiments investigating behavioral avoidance of moderate to severe hypoxia were carried out for adults of all three species. None of the three species effectively avoided either severely hypoxic (d.o. < 0.5 ml l−1) or moderately hypoxic (d.o. ≈ 1.0 ml l−1) bottom layers in stratified columns. These results suggest that in␣nearshore areas where development of zones of d.o. < 1.0 ml l−1 may be sudden, widespread, or unpredictable, patterns of reduced copepod abundance in bottom waters may be due primarily to mortality rather than avoidance.  Although oysters are commercially very important in Brazil, there is still much dispute about the number of Crassostrea species occurring on the Brazilian coast. The dispute is centered around C. brasiliana, considered by some authors to be a junior synonym of C. rhizophorae. In this paper we compared, by allozyme electrophoresis, sympatric and allopatric populations of the two putative species. Of the 17 loci analysed, five were diagnostic for the two species in sympatry (gene identity = 0.46 to 0.47), clearly demonstrating that they are distinct biological species. Heterozygosity (h) levels were high for both species (h = 0.24 to 0.28), and no heterozygote deficiencies were observed in any population (local inbreeding, F IS  = 0.141; P > 0.70). Levels of population structure in C. rhizophorae along 1300 km of coast were very low (population inbreeding, F ST  = 0.026; P > 0.15), indicating that the planktonic, planktotrophic larvae of these species are capable of long-range dispersal. The spatial, diel and tidal variability in the abundance of piscivorous fishes and their teleost prey, and the dietary composition of predatory fishes were investigated in beds of Heterozostera tasmanica within Port Phillip Bay, Australia, from September 1997 to February 1998. Predatory and prey fish assemblages were sampled from beds of H. tasmanica at three locations during each combination of diel (day and night) and tidal (high and low) cycles. Pelagic and benthic crustaceans represented >60% by abundance of the diets of all predatory fishes. Seven species, 54% of all predatory fishes, were piscivorous. These piscivores consumed individuals from seven families, 36.8% of the fish families being associated with seagrass. Western Australian salmon, Arripis truttacea (Arripidae) (n = 174) and yank flathead, Platycephalus speculator (Platycephalidae) (n = 46) were the most abundant piscivores. A. truttacea consumed larval/post-larval atherinids, gobiids and sillaginids. P. speculator consumed late-juvenile/adult atherinids, clinids and gobiids. While the abundances of piscivores varied between locations (P < 0.001) and diel periods (P = 0.028), the relative differences in piscivore abundance between sites and diel periods were not consistent between tides. The abundances of A. truttacea varied in a complex way amongst sites, diel period and tidal cycle, as shown by a three-way interaction between these factors (P = 0.026). Only during diurnal periods at St. Leonards was the abundance of A. truttacea significantly higher during high than low tides (P < 0.001). During the other diel periods at each site, the abundance of A. truttacea did not vary. P. speculator was significantly more abundant nocturnally (P = 0.017). The abundance of small (prey) fishes varied significantly amongst sites (P < 0.001). During the day, the abundance of small fishes did not vary between high and low tides (P = 0.185), but their nocturnal abundance was greater during low tide (P < 0.001). Atherinids (n = 1732) and sillaginids (n = 1623) were the most abundant families of small fishes. Atherinids were significantly more abundant nocturnally (P = 0.005) and during low tides (P = 0.029), and varied significantly amongst sites (P < 0.001). Sillaginids varied significantly only amongst sites (P < 0.001). Seagrass beds provide a foraging habitat for a diverse assemblage of predatory fishes, many of which are piscivorous. Anti-predator behaviour and amongst-location variability in abundances of piscivorous fishes may explain some of the diel and tidal, and broad-scale spatial patterns in small-fish abundances. Allozyme variation was used to investigate the genetic structure of the coral reef fishes Stegastes nigricans, Epinephelus merra and Acanthurus triostegus around New Caledonia. Each species was sampled from each of three sites in the ≃1000 km circumference of the lagoon of New Caledonia. Allelic variation was recorded for each species at 14, 13 and 17 loci, respectively, and heterozygosity diversity (H s) was 0.082, 0.065 and 0.116, respectively. Analysis of genetic differentiation between sites produced inconsistent results between species, with spatial heterogeneity in two species (S. nigricans, F st  = 0.038; A. triostegus, F st = 0.049) and homogeneity in one species (E. merra, F st = 0.000). Hydrological and climatic data from the lagoon suggest that the eastern and western sides of the lagoon are isolated, since they lie in water masses of different origin. This may explain the genetic differentiation and restricted gene flow found at a local scale for S. nigricans and A. triostegus. Homogeneity in populations of E. merra is discussed in relation to its low genetic diversity and its reproductive behaviour. Received: 23 April 1997 / Accepted: 25 September 1997  相似文献

The genetic relationships among South-East Asian populations of the scad mackerels Decapterus macarellus, D. macrosoma and D. russelli (Pisces: Carangidae) were investigated. In 1995 and 1996, 216 fish were sampled in seven localities spanning the seas of Indonesia and were examined for restriction-site polymorphisms using ten restriction enzymes for the mitochondrial (mt) DNA control region, amplified by the polymerase chain-reaction. The inferred phylogeny of haplotypes led to the recognition of three distinct mitochondrial lineages or phylads consistent with the distinctions of current taxonomy. All 15 mtDNA haplotypes found in D. macarellus and all 9 haplotypes found in D. macrosoma were arranged as star-like clusters, suggesting recent evolutionary history. In contrast, the phylad formed by 6 haplotypes in D. russelli from the Sulawesi Sea exhibited diffuse topology, suggesting that ancestral lineages of this species have been retained to the present. Average nucleotide-divergence estimates between haplotypes of different phylads were between 0.042 and 0.135, suggesting ancient separation, in consistency with published allozyme data. High levels of haplotype diversity, but no geographical heterogeneity, was detected within D. macarellus from the Molucca Sea and the Banda Sea. Populations of D. macrosoma exhibited both significant differences between adjacent regions (Sunda Strait and Java Sea), and broadscale genetic homogeneity from the South China Sea to the Sulawesi Sea via the Java Sea and Makassar Strait. The geographic isolation of the D. macrosoma population sampled in the Sunda Strait suggests that this region constitute a sharp transition zone between the Indian Ocean and the Sunda Shelf. Near-monomorphism of haplotypes and low nucleotide diversity (d X) were observed in the samples of D. macrosoma from the continental shelf (haplotype-diversity estimates, h, = 0.00 to 0.25 ± 0.08 and d X = 0.000 to 0.002). This was in contrast to the comparatively high haplotype and nucleotide diversities observed in other pelagic fish species including D. macarellus (h = 0.82 ± 0.05, d X = 0.012 to 0.015) and D. russelli (h = 0.63 ± 0.12, d X = 0.016), and in the oceanic D. macrosoma population sampled in the Sunda Strait (h = 0.67 ± 0.31, d X = 0.005). We hypothesise that this may be the consequence of recent and perhaps repeated bottleneck events that have affected the D. macrosoma population sampled on the continental shelf. Historically, most mammals have been classified as polygynous; although recent molecular evidence suggests that many mammals may be polygynandrous, particularly the ground-dwelling sciurids. We genotyped 351 round-tailed ground squirrels (Xerospermophilus tereticaudus) using seven microsatellite loci to determine paternity in 31 litters from 2004 to 2007. Polygyny was evident in all years except in 2007, when the population size was reduced. Multiple paternity occurred in the majority of litters (55%) with 2.5 ± 0.26 sires/litter (n = 31). Forty-nine percent of resident males (n = 114) sired offspring, and of males that sired offspring (n = 56) 27% sired young in multiple litters in a single breeding season. Litter size was positively correlated with the number of sires. Through an indirect analysis of paternity, we found 21 litters (68%) with an average relatedness of 0.5 or less. Males had a greater opportunity for sexual selection (I s = 1.60) than females (I s = 0.40); Bateman’s gradient was also greater in males (1.07 ± 0.04, n = 56) than females (0.82 ± 0.08, n = 31). The mating system in round-tailed ground squirrels defined through genetic analyses and Bateman’s gradients is polygynandrous compared to the previously suggested polygynous mating system as established by behavioral observations and fits within the predictions of the ground squirrel sociality models. Upon evaluating the predictions of the sociality models among sciurid species, we found a negative relationship between the level of sociality with litter size and the average percentage of multiple paternity within a litter. Thus, recent genetic information and reclassification of mating systems support the predictions of the ground-dwelling squirrel sociality models.  相似文献

We have examined the variability and potential adaptive significance of the wavelengths of light produced by gelatinous zooplankton. Bioluminescence spectra were measured from 100 species of planktonic cnidarians and ctenophores collected between 1 and 3500 m depth. Species averages of maximal wavelengths for all groups ranged from 440 to 506 nm. Ctenophores (41 species) had characteristically longer wavelengths than medusae (34 species), and the wavelengths from siphonophores (25 species) had a bimodal distribution across species. Four species each produced two different wavelengths of light, and in the siphonophore Abylopsistetragona these differences were associated with specific body regions. Light from deep-dwelling species had significantly shorter wavelengths than light from shallow species in both ctenophores (p = 0.010) and medusae (p = 0.009). Although light production in these organisms was limited to the blue-green wavelengths, it appears that within this range, colors are well-adapted to the particular environment which the species inhabit. The growth rates of two fish species, the winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus (Walbaum) (19.3 to 42.6 mm total length, TL) and the tautog Tautogaonitis (Linnaeus) (23.9 to 55.9 mm TL), were used to evaluate habitat quality under and around municipal piers in the Hudson River estuary, USA. Growth rates were measured in a series of 10 d field caging-experiments conducted at two large piers in the summers of 1996 and 1997. Cages (0.64 m2) were deployed along␣transects that stretched from underneath the piers to beyond them, encompassing the pier edge (the transitional zone between the pier interior and the outside). Growth in weight (G w ) was determined at five locations along the transect, 40 m beneath the pier, 20 m beneath the pier, at the pier edge, 20 m beyond the pier edge, and 40 m beyond. Under piers, mean growth rates of winter flounder and tautogs were negative (xˉG W  = −0.02 d−1), and rates were comparable to laboratory-starved control fishes (xˉG W  = −0.02 d−1). In contrast, mean growth rates at pier edges and in open waters beyond piers were generally positive (xˉG W ranged from −0.001 to +0.05 d−1), with growth at pier edges often being more variable and less rapid than at open-water sites. Analyses of stomach contents upon retrieval of caged fishes revealed that dry weights of food were generally higher among fishes caged at open-water stations ( range = 0.02 to 0.72 mg dry wt) than at pier-edge ( range = 0.01 to 0.54 mg) or under-pier ( range = 0.03 to 0.11 mg) stations, although it was apparent that benthic prey were available at all stations on the transect. Our results indicate poor feeding conditions among fishes caged under piers, and suboptimal foraging among fishes caged at pier edges. Inadequate growth rates can lead to higher rates of mortality, and, based on these and other earlier experiments, we conclude that under-pier environments are poor-quality habitats for some species of juvenile fishes. “Gardening” of denuded coral reef habitats is a novel restoration approach in which sexual and asexual recruits are used. The present study aimed at the evaluation of the potentiality for restoration use of different types of small fragments subcloned from the Red Sea coral species Stylophora pistillata. In situ short-term (24 h, 45Ca method) and long-term (1 year, alizarin Red S vital staining) experiments revealed high variation (up to 70%) in growth rates between up-growing branches of a specific genet, and that tip ratios in dichotomous branches (n = 880) differ significantly between newly formed and older branches, further emphasizing the within-colony genetic background for spatial configuration. Small, isolated branches (<4 cm) revealed high survivorship (up to 90%, 1 year) and up to 20–30% (1 year, single- vs. dichotomous-tip branches, respectively) growth, showing that small-sized branches are suitable for restoration purposes. Results differed significantly between genets. Total length added for dichotomous-tip branches was in general at least twice that recorded for single tips of a specific genet. Restoration protocols may be applied either by sacrificing whole large colonies via pruning high numbers of small fragments or, by pruning only a few small branches from each one of many genets. An in situ “nursery period” of approximately 8 years is predicted for S. pistillata small fragments. Received: 17 August 1999 / Accepted: 15 February 2000  相似文献

Parma microlepis (Günther) were collected from Malabar, an urban location close to the centre of Sydney, Australia, and from Jervis Bay, a reference location 170 km south of the city centre. At each location, fish were collected from two sites separated by 100 to 200 m. The ultrastructure of normal liver tissue is described based on 20 female fish collected from Jervis Bay, where fish are known to be exposed to low levels of organochlorine contaminants. Alterations in the endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, lysosomes and nuclei of hepatocytes were identified and quantified in the liver tissue of fish from this location and compared to alterations in 20 female fish collected from Malabar, where fish are exposed to higher concentrations of organochlorine pesticides such as DDT compounds. There were significant differences in the percentage of hepatocytes with swollen mitochondria (F = 124.025, df = 2, 2, P = 0.008) and atypical nuclei (F = 22.198, df = 2, 2, P = 0.043) between sites (100 to 200 m apart), but there were no clear differences between the percentage of structural alterations in the hepatocytes of P. microlepis from Jervis Bay and Malabar. Associations between liver morphology and the organochlorines aldrin, dieldrin, DDE and chlordane were examined using a Pearson correlation matrix. Significant correlations were detected between the percentage of hepatocytes with dilated endoplasmic reticulum and the concentrations of the pesticide aldrin (r = 0.600, df = 11, r crit(α = 0.05) = 0.553). Significant associations were also detected between the percentage of hepatocytes with disorganised endoplasmic reticulum and the concentrations of dieldrin and DDE residues in fish (r = 0.576, r = 0.567, respectively, df = 13, r crit (α = 0.05) = 0.514). However, there was little evidence that ultrastructural alterations in fish responded to increasing concentrations of these pesticides in a consistent dose-response manner. Accurate determination of diet is important in ecological studies. Many macrobenthic predators fragment their prey so finely that identification of component organisms is difficult. Knowledge of the food available to masticatory predators such as lobsters can help in determining potential prey and enhance the accuracy of dietary assessments. With SCUBA divers limited by depth and submersion time, benthic analyses are becoming increasingly reliant on camera systems. Here, based on paired samples, we assess the relative merits of using removal-sampling by divers versus monochrome video photography to determine the prey spectrum available to macrobenthic predators. We also relate the results to the gut contents of rock lobsters (Jasus lalandii) that were collected simultaneously. Diver samples took on average four times longer to collect and process than video-image samples. No significant differences were evident between the number of species identified in diver samples and video-image samples (n = 21 paired samples, Student's t = 0.233, P > 0.1), although an analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) test revealed that the results obtained from the two sampling methods were significantly different in terms of species composition (global R = 0.203, P < 0.01). Cluster analysis based on Bray–Curtis similarity to compare diver and video-image samples revealed four clusters of samples with <35% similarity, confirming that the two techniques do sample different assemblages of species. Video images detected and allowed identification of all species of prey recorded in the rock lobsters' stomach contents, probably because rock lobsters prey mainly on relatively large prey which are readily detected by video. Diver-sampling underestimated or failed to detect two important prey types, namely small barnacles and encrusting coralline algae. We concluded that the camera system employed was adequate for assessing the prey assemblages available to macrobenthic predators such as lobsters, and that it was considerably more economical than using divers. Nutrients were added separately and combined to an initial concentration of 10 μM (ammonium) and/or 2 μM (phosphate) in a series of experiments carried out with the giant clam Tridacna maxima at 12 microatolls in One Tree Island lagoon, Great Barrier Reef, Australia (ENCORE Project). These nutrient concentrations remained for 2 to 3 h before returning to natural levels. The additions were made every low tide (twice per day) over 13 and 12 mo periods for the first and second phase of the experiment, respectively. The nutrients did not change the wet tissue weight of the clams, host C:N ratio, protein content of the mantle, calcification rates or growth rates. However, ammonium (N) enrichment alone significantly increased the total population density of the algal symbiont (Symbiodinium sp.: C = 3.6 · 108 cell clam−1, N = 6.6 · 108 cell clam−1, P = 5.7 · 108 cell clam−1, N + P = 5.7 · 108 cell clam−1; and C = 4.1 · 108 cell clam−1, N = 5.1 · 108 cell clam−1, P = 4.7 · 108 cell clam−1, N + P = 4.5 · 108 cell clam−1, at the end of the first and second phases of the experiment, respectively), although no differences in the mitotic index of these populations were detected. The total chlorophyll a (chl a) content per clam but not chlorophyll a per cell also increased with ammonium addition (C = 7.0 mg chl a clam−1, N = 13.1 mg chl a clam−1, P = 12.9 mg chl a clam−1, N + P = 11.8 mg chl a clam−1; and C = 8.8 mg chl a clam−1, N = 12.8 mg chl a clam−1; P = 11.2 mg chl a clam−1, N + P = 11.3 mg chl a clam−1, at the end of the first and second phases of the experiment, respectively). The response of clams to nutrient enrichment was quantitatively small, but indicated that small changes in inorganic nutrient levels affect the clam–zooxanthellae association.  The structure of the larval fish assemblages in three large estuarine systems on the KwaZulu-Natal coast of South Africa was examined using a combination of univariate, distributional and multivariate techniques. The database was comprised of a full annual set of larval fish samples taken from each estuarine system: Durban Harbour, Richards Bay Harbour and St Lucia Estuary. The mean monthly densities of each species in each system were used in the species matrix, and the mean monthly values of salinity, temperature and turbidity were used in the environmental matrix. The mean species diversity and evenness index were significantly higher in Durban Harbour (H′ = 1.03, J′ = 0.65) than in the other two systems. The cumulative dominance curve showed that St Lucia Estuary has a high dominance of a few species, with Richards Bay Harbour intermediate and Durban Harbour being the most diverse. Classification and MDS (multiple-dimensional scaling) analyses of larval fish densities in all three systems grouped together into three main clusters on the basis of system. The species similarity matrix (inverse analysis) clustered into five groups at the 25% similarity level. The MDS analysis of the same matrix showed that the groups separated out according to the degree of estuarine association of a species and hence habitat type. The species most responsible for system groupings were: Glossogobius callidus, Gilchristella aestuaria, Stolephorus holodon, Croilia mossambica and Gobiid 12. The “best fitting” of the environmental variables to explain the larval fish community patterns in each system was turbidity on its own (weighted Spearman's rank correlation, ρw = 0.55). The relationship of larval densities to environmental conditions was shown to be species-specific with estuarine species (e.g. G. callidus and G. aestuaria), having a strong positive correlation with temperature and turbidity but negative correlations with salinity. In summary, much longer term studies with more sites within each system are needed to assess whether the larval fish assemblages are stable or at an equilibrium (both spatially and temporally) and whether these assemblages are indicative of the relative “health” and nursery function of the system. DNA sequence diversity of octopods was investigated using the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase III gene (mtCOIII). DNA was obtained from ethanol- or formalin-fixed tissue of 15 specimens belonging to Octopus mimus Gould, 1852, Octopus vulgaris Cuvier, 1797 and Scaeurgus unicirrhus d'Orbigny, 1840, from coastal waters of the Mediterranean (France), the southwestern Atlantic (Brazil), the Caribbean (Costa Rica) and the southeastern/tropical Pacific (north Chile/Costa Rica). A 612 bp fragment of the mtCOIII gene was sequenced and aligned to the orthologous sequences available from northeastern Pacific Octopus species. Possible phylogenetic relationships were reconstructed. The mtCOIII gene tree revealed two main clusters, one comprised O. rubescens, O. dofleini and O. californicus, while the other included all O. vulgaris specimens, O. bimaculatus, O. bimaculoides and O. mimus. With one exception all South American haplotypes including O. bimaculatus and O. bimaculoides appeared as the sister group of the Mediterranean haplotype of O. vulgaris, indicating that most of the South American O. vulgaris specimens investigated would not belong to the recently redescribed species O. vulgaris restricted to the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic. The treatment of O. mimus as a species distinct from Mediterranean O. vulgaris is supported by a high nucleotide divergence of 12.7%. Based on the mtCOIII gene tree the existence of cryptic species among O. vulgaris-like octopods is suggested. Received: 15 January 1999 / Accepted: 15 October 1999  相似文献

Strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) contents in the otoliths of yellow and silver European eels [Anguilla anguilla (L.)] collected from coastal waters of the Baltic Sea and a freshwater lake in Sweden were examined by wavelength dispersive X-ray spectrometry with an electron microprobe. The mean Sr/Ca ratios from elver check to otolith edge were significantly higher for the eels from coastal waters (5.39 ± 1.09‰) than for those from the lake (0.71 ± 0.89‰). The evidence indicates that European eels in the Baltic Sea do not necessarily migrate into freshwater streams during the growth phase. Received: 30 September 1999 / Accepted: 6 April 2000  相似文献

Microstructure of settlement-marks in the otoliths of tropical reef fishes   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The morphology and ultrastructure of the otolith settlement-mark was examined in 44 tropical reef-fish species spanning nine families. A classification scheme based on similar otolith characteristics is presented. Three major categories are identified based on changes in increment width and optical qualities of the settlement-mark. Of the 44 species examined, 39 possessed “abrupt” settlement-marks (Type I) characterised by a rapid decrease in increment width (up to 50% reduction) over settlement. Type I settlement-marks were found in all nine families examined. The 39 species spanned the whole range of possible larval durations (Pomacentrus moluccensis, 15 d ± 0 SE; Naso hexacanthus, 91.2 d ± 2.97 SE). Four of the 44 species possessed “zonal” settlement-marks (Type II), featuring a band of increments that are wider than pre-settlement increments. Species in this category are the labrids Corisaygula, Thalassoma bifasciatum, T. lunare and an unidentified acanthurid (Acanthurus sp. 2). One species of acanthurid (N. brevirostris) possessed a “gradual” settlement-mark (Type III), manifest as a gradual decrease in increment width during the settlement period. A possible fourth type was identified from the literature. Gnatholepis thompsoni and Coryphopterus glaucofraenum possessed a settlement-mark with increment widths that increased post-settlement. Available data suggest a poor relationship between the structure of the settlement-mark and the magnitude of metamorphosis (previously reported as internal and external morphological change). Evidence suggests that the increment profile over early development and the increment transitions associated with the settlement event are taxon-specific and may enable late-larval stage fishes to be identified to species level. M. G. Hoskin 《Marine Biology》1997,127(4):647-656
In south-eastern Australia, the prosobranch gastropods Morula marginalba (Blainville), Cominella lineolata (Lamarck) and Bedeva hanleyi (Angas) have similar fine-scale distributions, but appear to possess very different dispersal capabilities due to contrasting modes of larval development. M.marginalba produce planktonic larvae, whereas C. lineolata and B. hanleyi undergo direct development in benthic egg capsules and emerge as crawling juveniles. To test for possible effects of contrasting life histories on levels of genetic variation within and among populations, a survey was conducted of allozyme variation at six polymorphic loci in 8 to 9 local populations of each species. Collections of snails were made between June 1992 and November 1993. Sampling ranges spanned between 162 and 180 km of coast. Regardless of larval type, proportions of single-locus genotypes in each collection were consistent with the recruitment of offspring which had been generated through random mating. However, genotypic diversity was lower in those species that undergo direct development. Loci surveyed in C. lineolata and B. hanleyi were polymorphic (i.e. frequency of most common allele <95%) in fewer populations than those examined for M.␣marginalba (P <0.001) and, where polymorphisms occurred, also possessed significantly fewer alleles (P <0.001). Consequently, average levels of expected heterozygosity were greater in populations of M. marginalba than in those of either of the other species (P <0.001). Genetic variation among populations, expressed as the standardised variance in allele frequencies (F ST ), was inversely related to expected larval dispersal capability. The nine collections of M. marginalba showed little overall differentiation (F ST  = 0.017; P <0.001), reflecting the ability of planktonic larvae to interconnect local populations, and so limit divergence due to drift and natural selection. In contrast, there were high levels of allelic heterogeneity among the nine collections of C. lineolata (F ST  = 0.523; P <0.001) and eight collections of B. hanleyi (F ST  = 0.140; P <0.001). These data imply that for species which undergo direct development, local populations are effectively closed and evolve largely independent of one another. In this study eight different species of barnacles were found within nine species of sponges from the Red Sea. This brings to 11 the number of sponge-symbiotic barnacles reported from the Red Sea, two of these are new Acasta species (not described herein) and one (A. tzetlini Kolbasov) is a new record for this sea. This number is much higher than that of symbiotic barnacles found within sponges from either the N. Atlantic (2) or the Mediterranean (4). Two possible explanations for this are the presence of numerous predators in coral reefs and scarcity of available substrate for settlement. These factors can lead to high incidence of symbiotic relationships. Of the nine sponge species, only one (Suberites cf. clavatus) had previously been known to contain barnacles. Even at the family level, this is the first record of symbiotic barnacles in two out of the seven sponge families (Latrunculiidae, Theonellidae). Our present findings strengthen the apparent rule that the wider the openings in a barnacle shell, the fewer the host taxa with which it will associate, usually from one or two closely related families, and the more frequent it will associate with elastic sponges. Most Neoacasta laevigata found on Carteriospongia foliascens were located on the same side as the sponge's ostia, i.e. facing the incoming water. This adaptation allows the barnacles to catch more suspended particles from the water, provides them with more oxygen and prevents their exposure to discharged sponge waste. The highest density of barnacles observed on one face of a “leaf ” (with ostia) was 0.389 barnacles cm−2 (one barnacle per 2.57 cm2) and on average 0.181 ± 0.68, while the average on the other side was only 0.068 ± 0.52 barnacles cm−2. As indicated by the Morisita index, these barnacles most frequently (58%, n = 12) had a clumped spatial distribution (while the rest were randomly distributed), as is to be expected from such sessile organisms with internal fertilization via copulation. The presence of N. laevigata induced the growth of secondary perpendicular projections of its host C. foliascens. Of the N. laevigata examined, 17% brooded 324 ± 41 embryos each, of 286 ± 17 μm total length; only 5.7% (n = 123) were found to be dead. Size distribution analysis of skeletal elements from dead barnacles showed them to be significantly larger than the skeletal elements of the population of live barnacles ( p < 0.05). The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of sediment contamination on the benthic macrofauna and to predict macrofaunal changes following remediation at a Superfund (uncontrolled hazardous waste) site in San Francisco Bay, California, USA. DDT and its metabolites (ΣDDT) were the contaminants of concern. With few small-scale exceptions, all (>100) other sediment contaminants ever measured at the site were present at background or non-toxic levels. In hierarchical regressions [Y=f(X 1, X 2, X 3), where X 1=sediment %silt + clay, X 2=sediment total organic carbon (OC), and X 3=log 10 (ΣDDT μg g−1 OC)] with data from samples collected at the study site, log10(ΣDDT μg g−1 OC) explained a highly significant amount of the variance in the infaunal index (II ) and log10(number of Amphipoda excluding Grandidierella japonica + 1) after statistically controlling for the potential effects of sediment %silt + clay and OC. The ratios of change of II and log10(number of Amphipoda excluding G. japonica + 1) with respect to log10(ΣDDT μg g−1 OC) were about −9:1 and −0.4:1, respectively. Most of the 92 species collected were present at low to moderate densities over the entire range of ΣDDT sediment concentrations. The bivalve Theora lubrica, tubificids, most polychaetes, a tanaid (Zeuxo normani), and an amphipod (G. japonica), were common, while four other amphipods (Ampelisca abdita, Corophium heteroceratum, Photis brevipes, Dulichia rhabdoplastis), a phoronid (Phoronis cf. pallida), a bivalve (Cryptomya californica), and a cumacean (Eudorella pacifica), were rare or absent from sites with high ΣDDT sediment-concentrations.
