We examined the feeding ecology and niche segregation of the ten most abundant fish species caught by longline operations
off eastern Australia between 1992 and 2006. Diets of 3,562 individuals were examined. Hook timer data were collected from
a further 328 fish to examine feeding behaviour in relation to depth and time of day. Prey biomass was significantly related
to predator species, predator length and year and latitude of capture. Although the fish examined fed on a mix of fish, squid
and crustacea, fish dominated the diet of all species except small albacore (Thunnus alalunga) which fed mainly on crustacea and large swordfish (Xiphias gladius) and albacore which fed mainly on squid. Cannibalism was observed in lancetfish (Alepisaurus spp.). Multidimensional scaling identified three species groups based on their diet composition. One group consisted of yellowfin
tuna (T. albacares), striped marlin (Tetrapturus audax) and dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus); a second group consisted of bigeye tuna (T. obesus), swordfish and albacore; and a third consisted of southern bluefin tuna (T. maccoyii) and blue shark (Prionace glauca). Of note was the separation of mako shark (Isurus oxyrhynchus) and lancetfish from all other predators. Prey length generally increased with increasing predator length although even large
predators fed on a wide range of prey lengths including very small prey. Overall, differences in prey type and size, feeding
times and depths were noted across the range of species examined to the extent that predators with overlapping prey, either
in type or size, fed at different times of the diel period or at different depths. Taken together these data provide evidence
for feeding niche segregation across the range of oceanic top predators examined. 相似文献

Diel trophic interactions between vertically-migrating zooplankton and their fish predators in an eelgrass community 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Diel changes in the composition of crustacean zooplankton and the diets of fish predators from an intertidal eelgrass flat were monitored concurrently. The zooplankton is characterized by two major components. The obligate zooplankters (holoplanktonic calanoid copepods and meroplanktonic decapod larvae) appear to exhibit vertical migration, being present in higher densities near the surface of the water column at night. The facultative zooplankton (amphipods and ostracods) are benthic during the day, but move up into the water column at night. Planktivorous midwaterdwelling fish consume calanoid copepods and decapod larvae during the day and cease feeding or switch their diet to amphipods at night. Benthic-dwelling fish consume some amphipods during both day and night. The factors important in prey selection by fish and the functional significance of vertical migration in both components of the zooplankton are discussed in the light of the changing patterns of fish predation. This paper is Publication No. 183 in the Ministry for Conservation of Victoria, Environmental Studies Series. 相似文献

Summary. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) present a model system in the investigation of tritrophic interactions mediated by plant secondary compounds. However, their toxicity for insect herbivores has never been experimentally proven. Here, we demonstrate the toxic effects of a PA on growth and survival of the eri silk moth Philosamia ricini. In a feeding experiment, larvae of this generalist herbivore fed with an artificial PA diet gained weight significantly slower than control animals, and died as pupae. We suggest that derivatives of the ingested PA N-oxide damage developmental functions during metamorphosis. A tracer test with [14C]senecionine N-oxide revealed that the caterpillars lack adaptations that would prevent conversion of the chemical into the pro-toxic free base. In contrast, the PA adapted leaf beetle Longitarsus anchusae accumulates PAs as N-oxides. We tested the purpose of sequestration in this species as defence against predators. Through a series of prey choice experiments with three carabid predator species, chemically non-protected bark beetle pupae were chosen almost uniformly over L. anchusae pupae. In a following choice test with one of these predators, artificially PA-treated mealworm segments deterred the predator from feeding. Overall the study corroborates the immediate toxic effect of PAs on non-adapted herbivores and the protective effect that adapted insects may gain by sequestering them. It thereby underlines the potential for PAs to play a central role in multitrophic interactions between plants, phytophages and their predators. 相似文献

The size of a population can be augmented by enriching the carrying capacity of its limiting resource, or by subsidising the renewal of the resource. The well known ‘paradox of enrichment’ models the first case, in which enrichment can force consumers and their limiting resource into destabilising limit cycles, whereas impoverishment stabilises the dynamics. In this paper we model the case of resource subsidy, where the resource is a limiting prey to predators. In contrast to enrichment, the system is stabilised by an influx of prey in the form of a rescue effect, and destabilised by an outflux of prey in the form of an Allee effect. Limit cycles are not sustained by the Allee effect; instead both populations collapse to zero over a large region of the predator-prey phase plane. The catastrophic extinction of prey requires the presence of both an Allee effect on prey and a predator with a type II functional response, though neither needs to contribute a large impact to prey dynamics. The novel implication is that consumers exaggerate the impact of Allee effects on a renewing resource. Conversely, an Allee effect in the form of a cull of resource, even of small value, can trigger local extinction of resource-dependent consumers. 相似文献

The prevalence of intraguild predation (IGP) in productive environments has long puzzled ecologists. Theory predicts the exclusion of intraguild prey from such environments, but data consistently defy this expectation. This suggests that coexistence mechanisms at high resource productivity may differ from those at lower productivity. Here I present a mathematical model that investigates multiple coexistence mechanisms. I incorporate two biological features widely observed in IGP communities: intraspecific interference via cannibalism or superparasitism, and temporal refuges arising from differential sensitivities to abiotic variation. I develop predictions based on three aspects of the IG prey-IG predator interaction: mutual invasibility, transient dynamics, and long-term abundances. These predictions specify the conditions under which coexistence mechanisms reinforce vs. deter one another: when a competition-IGP trade-off allows coexistence at intermediate productivity a temporal refuge for the intraguild prey always allows coexistence at high productivity, but intraspecific interference does so only at a net fitness cost to the intraguild predator. Intraspecific interference that benefits the intraguild predator not only reduces tradeoff-mediated coexistence at intermediate productivity, but also undermines the refuge's coexistence-enhancing effect at high productivity. Different mechanism combinations yield characteristic signatures in time series data during transient dynamics. By judicious measurement of parameters and examining time series for critical signatures, one can elucidate the mechanisms that allow IGP to prevail in resource-rich environments. 相似文献

Investigating predator–prey relationships is an important component for identifying and understanding the factors that influence the structure and function of ecosystems. Mesopredators, defined as mid-level predators, have a profound effect on ecosystem structure by contributing an important link between apex predators and lower trophic levels. The diet of two elasmobranch mesopredators, Squalus acanthias and Mustelus antarcticus, was investigated in three locations in south-east Tasmania. Squalus acanthias consumed predominantly pelagic teleosts and cephalopods, while M. antarcticus predominantly consumed benthic crustaceans. As a result, there was low dietary and niche overlap between the two species. There was however evidence of intra-specific dietary variations between locations for both the species. This study has contributed to a better understanding of the top-down dynamics of the food web in coastal Tasmania, by providing important dietary information of two abundant mesopredators. In addition, the similar dietary patterns for S. acanthias and other Mustelus species over much of their global range suggest they may be consistent in their trophic roles across systems, with limited competition between these two sympatric mesopredators to be expected. 相似文献

Aposematic species advertise their unpalatability to potential predators using conspicuous warning colouration. The initial evolution of aposematism is thought to occur by warningly coloured mutants emerging in an already unpalatable cryptic species. However, possessing defence chemicals is often costly, and it is difficult to understand what the selective benefits might be for a mutation causing its bearer to be defended in a population of otherwise palatable cryptic prey. One solution to this problem is that chemically defended individuals are tasted and rejected by predators, and are, therefore, more likely to survive predatory attacks than undefended individuals. Using naïve domestic chicks Gallus gallus domesticus as predators and cryptic green chick crumbs as prey, we asked whether the accuracy with which birds discriminated between palatable and unpalatable prey was affected by the palatability of the unpalatable prey (moderately or highly defended), or their frequency in the population (10 or 25%). Birds could discriminate between green prey on the basis of their defences, and showed better discrimination between palatable and unpalatable prey when defended crumbs were highly unpalatable, compared to when they were moderately unpalatable. Although there was no detectable effect of the frequency of unpalatable prey in the population on predator taste-rejection behaviour in our main analysis, frequency did appear to affect the strategies that birds used in their foraging decisions when prey were only moderately unpalatable. How birds used taste to reject prey also suggests that birds may be able to monitor and regulate their chemical intake according to the frequency and defence levels of the unpalatable prey. Taken together, these results show that avian predators can generate selection for unpalatability in cryptic prey by sampling and taste-rejecting prey, but that a relatively large chemical difference between palatable and unpalatable prey may be necessary before unpalatable prey can enjoy a selective advantage. The exact nature of this evolutionary dynamic will depend on other environmental factors, such as defence costs and prey availability, but it provides a mechanism by which defences can evolve in a cryptic population. 相似文献

Distribution and community structure of midwater fishes in relation to the subtropical convergence off eastern Tasmania,Australia 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Midwater fishes were sampled at night to a depth of 400 m in oceanic waters east of Tasmania, Australia, in May/June of 1992, 1993 and 1994. We examined whether there were differences in the distribution and density of these fishes in relation to the subtropical convergence (STC) separating East Australia Current (EAC) water from subantarctic water (SAW) to the south. A total of 23999 fishes from 107 taxa and 43 families were identified. Four new records were identified from the study area. Myctophids and stomiatoids were the main fish taxa captured. We found no evidence of increased density of the combined fish catch in any particular area. However, differences between areas in the density of individual species were noted, although no species was confined to any one area. Ceratoscopelus warmingi, Lobianchia dofleini and Vinciguerria spp. were most abundant in the EAC, whereas Lampichthys procerus was most abundant in the SAW. Only Diaphus danae was found in significantly higher numbers in the STC. Multivariate analysis revealed that community structure in the EAC was significantly different from that of the SAW but not from the STC. Further, when separated by depth, the shallow EAC group was significantly different in all group comparisons bar that with the shallow STC. Our data indicated that the thin EAC layer above 200 m could be distinguished by its fauna from the SAW. However, we could not detect a separate community in the STC. We conclude, therefore, that the STC is not an area of increased micronekton abundance, nor does it contain a distinct community, during the Australian autumn/winter. 相似文献

Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) and Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) are the two most abundant cetacean species in the oceanic waters of Madeira and the Azores. They are of similar size, occur in similar habitats and are regularly observed in mixed-species groups to forage together. Genetic analyses suggested that, within each species, dolphins ranging around both archipelagos belong to the same panmictic population. We tested the hypotheses that (1) within each species, individuals from the two archipelagos belong to a single ecological stock; (2) between species, common and spotted dolphins have distinct trophic niches; using fatty acid (FA) and stable isotope (SI) analyses. Fatty acids and stable isotopes were analysed from 86 blubber and 150 skin samples of free-ranging dolphins, respectively. Sex-related differences were not significant, except for common dolphin FA profiles. In S. frontalis, FA and SI differences between archipelagos suggested that individuals belonged to different ecological stocks, despite the existence of gene flow between the two archipelagos. In D. delphis, differences were more pronounced, but it was not possible to distinguish between stock structure and a seasonal effect, due to differential sampling periods in the Azores and Madeira. Inter-specific comparisons were restricted to the Azores where all samples were collected during summer. Differences in FA proportions, noticeably for FA of dietary origin, as well as in nitrogen SI profiles, confirmed that both species feed on distinct resources. This study emphasizes the need for an integrated approach including both genetic and biochemical analyses for stock assessment, especially in wide-ranging marine top predators. 相似文献

Nyctiphanes australis was collected from the east coast of Tasmania between January 1989 and April 1991. Density and biomass were significantly higher in autumn than in any other season. The population was dominated by juveniles, except in autumn and spring 1990 when there was a significant increase in the proportion of adults. Our data indicated that N. australis does not regularly migrate vertically and that it forms aggregations of particular size classes which vary both temporally and spatially. Stomach fullness in Trachurus declivis, a major predator of N. australis, rose to a peak in autumn when N. australis stocks and the monthly catches by the fishery for T. declivis were at their highest. The stomachs of T. declivis were also dominated by adult size classes during this period. The virtual absence of N. australis in 1989 and the subsequent failure of the T. declivis fishery in that year underline the interrelationship between these two species. We suggest that this was the result of an influx of subtropical northern waters low in nutrients onto the shelf, which corresponded with a major La Niña cold event at that time. 相似文献

Larval fishes were sampled across six transects perpendicular to a 50 km section of the coast off Sydney, Australia, in April/May and August/September 1990. Samples were collected at the surface and at depth (20 to 30 m) at three locations across each transect; over the 30, 70 and 100 m depth contours. There was a large level of heterogeneity in the horizontal and vertical distributions of most taxa examined, and no general pattern of distribution was evident for the whole assemblage. Classification analyses revealed that the major differences between assemblages were related to depth. Horizontal trends in the distributions of the abundant taxa were evident in the inshore-offshore direction, but not longshore. Seven taxa belonging to the families Gobiidae, Labridae, Sillaginidae, Sparidae, Ambassidae, Clupeidae and Clinidae/Tripterygiidae were most abundant inshore, whereas 4 taxa of the families Cepolidae, Percichthyidae, Cheilodactylidae and Gonorynchidae were generally more abundant offshore and 24 taxa showed no discrete horizontal trends across transects. More taxa and individuals were generally caught at depth than at the surface and this was evident across all transects. Twenty taxa were more numerous at depth, whereas 4 taxa, the Cheilodactylidae, Gonorynchidae, Mullidae and Scorpididae, were most abundant at the surface and 11 taxa showed no difference in densities between depths. Ontogenetic differences in the distributions of some larvae were evident. The mean size of larval Liza argentea (Mulgilidae) caught was greater offshore than inshore, and greater at the surface than at depth. In contrast, larger Pseudocaranx dentex (Carangidae) occurred in greater numbers at depth than at the surface. The data emphasise that the assemblages of larval fishes in coastal waters off central New South Wales cannot be modelled as a single unit, which concurs with the findings in other temperate and tropical vaters. Furthermore, the data denote the need to spatially stratify sampling in these waters in order to assess seasonal changes in these assemblages. 相似文献

Rates of fecal pellet production have been recorded from seven species of oceanic salps feeding on natural diets. Expressed as g C defecated per mg salp body C per hour, the values range between 3.7 and 27.7. Carbon: nitrogen ratios of the salp fecal pellets average 11.4; the organic matter of the pellets is mainly protein and carbohydrate. Sinking velocities of the pellets are very high, ranging from 320 to 2 238 m d-1 for pellets from three species. However, the pellets sink slower than would be predicted from extrapolation of rates for crustacean pellets, probably due to the shape of the pellets and their density. The high rates of defecation, large size and rapid sedimentation of salp fecal pellets make them likely mechanisms for rapid transport of small particulate matter from surface waters to deep water and the benthos. 相似文献

Very little is known about the ecology of common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) living in oceanic waters. This study investigated the ranging and residence patterns of bottlenose dolphins occurring in
the Azores (Portugal), the most isolated archipelago in the North Atlantic. Data were collected during standardized boat-based
surveys conducted over a 6-year period in an area of approximately 5,400 km2 (main study area). To investigate the extent of movements of individual animals, non-systematic surveys were also conducted
outside this area. Only 44 individuals out of 966 identified were frequently sighted within and between years. The remaining
individuals were either temporary migrants from within or outside the archipelago, or transients. Resident dolphins showed
strong geographic fidelity to the area. Long-distance movements (of almost 300 km), consistent with foraging or exploratory
trips, were observed among non-resident dolphins. Home range size was estimated for 31 individuals sighted ≥10 times. Range
areas of these dolphins varied in size and location, but considerable overlap was observed in the areas used, suggesting the
absence of habitat partitioning between resident and non-resident dolphins. Estimates of home range size of bottlenose dolphins
in the Azores were found to be considerably larger than those previously reported for this species. It is hypothesized that
dolphins living in the Azores carry out extensive movements and have large home ranges in response to the lower density and
patchy distribution of prey compared to other areas. The extensive ranging behaviour and the lack of territoriality provide
an opportunity for interbreeding between dolphins associated with different islands, thus preventing genetic differentiation
within the population of the Azores. 相似文献

Foods and predators of the green sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis in Newfoundland waters 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Gut analyses of the green sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (O. F. Müller) demonstrated that perennial phaeophytes, mostly fucoids and Alaria esculenta, were predominant in the diet. Ephemeral species, coralline algae and animals, were consumed in smaller amounts when available. Grazing by the urchins is evidently responsible for the dearth of non-coralline sublittoral algae in Newfoundland waters. Lobsters, rock crabs, purple sea stars, other urchins, and a variety of fishes and birds feed on S. droebachiensis, but predation is apparently not effective in limiting the abundance of the urchin.Studies in Biology from the Memorial University of Newfoundland No. 234.Contribution from the Marine Sciences Research Laboratory No. 66. 相似文献

The investigation was carried out from 62°N to 73°N and from 14°E to 11°W in the Norwegian Sea during 19 June-12 July 1997. Regional differences in the phase of the seasonal development of the plankton community were evident, most pronounced across the Arctic front. In the Coastal and eastern Atlantic domains, post-bloom conditions prevailed, characterised by low chlorophyll a (chl a) levels and a phytoplankton assemblage dominated by coccolithophorids and small flagellates. During the study period, egg production rates of Calanus finmarchicus were low (<10 eggs female-1 day-1), older copepodite stages dominated, and the seasonal descent to deeper waters had started. In the Arctic domain, bloom conditions were evident by high chl a levels and a high abundance of large diatoms. Egg production rates were higher (a maximum of 29 eggs female-1 day-1), but the dominance of stages CI-CIII indicated that considerable spawning had already occurred prior to the spring bloom. The seasonal descent had barely started. Both invertebrate and fish predators were most abundant in the Coastal and eastern Atlantic domains, with abundance strongly decreasing north-westwards. No tight relationship between total abundance of invertebrate or fish predators and that of C. finmarchicus was apparent. However, a weak, but significant, relationship between abundance of young stages of chaetognaths and Euchaeta spp. versus young stages of C. finmarchicus was found, indicating that these invertebrate predators develop parallel to the development of the new cohort of C. finmarchicus. In early summer, C. finmarchicus had reached overwintering stages, and had started to accumulate in deeper waters in areas with the highest abundance of horizontally migratory planktivorous fish. 相似文献

Satellite telemetry was used to study the movements and behaviour of ten blue sharks and one individual each of shortfin mako,
thresher and bigeye thresher off eastern Australia. The tracks showed latitudinal movements of up to 1,900 km, but none of
the sharks travelled away from the eastern Australian region. Tracking periods did not exceed 177 days. All species showed
oscillatory dive behaviour between the surface layers to as deep as 560–1,000 m. Blue sharks spent 35–58% of their time in
<50 m depths and 10–16% of their time in >300 m. Of these four species, the bigeye thresher spent the least time in the surface
layers and the most time at >300 m depth. All four species showed clear diel behaviour generally occupying shallower depths
at night than during the day. Blue sharks were mainly in 17.5–20.0°C water, while the thresher sharks showed a more bimodal
temperature distribution. 相似文献

The MULTIFAN method of Fournier et al. was used to analyse a series of monthly length-frequency distributions of deep-water royal red prawns (Haliporoides sibogae de Man, 1907, Solenoceridae) for the estimation of growth, mortality and yield-per-recruit. Length data were collected from commercial catches made between Latitude 33° and 35°S from November 1988 to May 1990. MULTIFAN distinguished six cohorts in the royal red prawn population, aged at 6 mo intervals from about 1.5 to 4 yr. Most prawns were between 2 and 3 yr of age. Females and males were fully recruited at 23.1 and 21.5 mm carapace length (CL) respectively, when about 2 yr old. Females grew faster and reached larger sizes at age than males (growth coefficient, K=0.37 yr-1 and asymptotic length, L
=48.3 mm CL for females, and K=0.49 yr-1 and L
=33.5 mm CL for males). Total mortality (Z) was estimated at 1.6 and 1.2 yr-1 for females and males, respectively. Approximate values for natural mortality (M) ranged from 0.6 to 0.7 yr-1 for females, and from 0.4 to 0.8 yr-1 for males. Analysis of yield-per-recruit suggested that while the current yield could possibly be increased by decreasing the length at first capture (L
c
), there seems to be little potential for an increase in yield from increased fishing effort in the area currently fished. 相似文献

Stimulation of phytoplankton production in coastal waters by natural rainfall inputs: Nutritional and trophic implications 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Recent evaluations of estuarine and coastal nutrient budgets implicate atmospheric deposition as a potentially significant (20 to 30%) source of biologically available nitrogen. We examined the potential growth stimulating impact of atmospheric nitrogen loading (ANL), as local rainfall, in representative shallow, nitrogen limited North Carolina mesohaline estuarine and euhaline coastal Atlantic Ocean habitats. From July 1988 to December 1989, using in situ bioassays, we examined natural phytoplankton growth responses, as14CO2 assimilation and chlorophylla production, to rain additions over a range of dilutions mimicking actual input levels. Rainfall at naturally occurring dilutions (0.5 to 5%) stimulated both14CO2 assimilation and chlorophylla production, in most cases in a highly significant manner. Parallel nutrient enrichments consistently pointed to nitrogen as the growth stimulating nutrient source. Generally, more acidic rainfall led to greater magnitudes of growth stimulation, especially at lower dilutions. Nutrient analyses of local rainfall from May 1988 to January 1990 indicated an inverse relationship between pH and NO

content. There have been growing concerns regarding increasing coastal and estuarine eutrophication, including ecologically and economically devastating phytoplankton blooms bordering urban and industrial regions of North America, Europe, Japan, and Korea. It appears timely, if not essential, to consider atmospheric nutrient loading in the formulation and implementation of nutrient management strategies aimed at mitigating coastal eutrophication. 相似文献
