Piggery effluent may contribute to the eutrophication of waterways, if it is not treated before disposal, because of high levels of phosphorus. Limes and red muds (a residue from bauxite refining) were used to remove phosphorus from piggery effluent (41 mg litre(-1) total P). Lime-based amendments were more effective than the red muds at removing phosphorus when compared at the same liquid: solid ratios. Based on laboratory data, the cost of treating effluent increased rapidly as the final required phosphorus concentration decreased to less than 4 mg litre(-1). Kiln dust was the cheapest amendment tested down to 2 mg litre(-1). Hydrated lime was able to clarify and flocculate the effluent to 1 mg litre(-1) within 60 min. The re-useability of all limes may be determined by a simple pH test. Red mud could be used to remove phosphorus when its pH was lowered to 6.0-6.5 and it is used at liquid:solid ratios <20:1.  相似文献

The acute toxicity of phenol and ammonia, singly and in combination, to larvae of the ephemeropteran, Baetis rhodani, was examined using a computerized continuous flow system in the laboratory. The 24 h LC50 values (with 95% confidence intervals) were calculated to be 29.9 (17.3-51.5) mg phenol litre(-1) and 8.2 (2.0-33.0) mg un-ionized ammonia litre(-1). When phenol and ammonia were together in low concentration (< 20 mg litre(-1) and < 3 mg litre(-1) [un-ionized], respectively), they expressed their toxicity additively, but at higher concentrations they behaved in a greater-than-additive manner. When the 24 h LC50 values were used to predict the toxicity of a coking plant effluent, containing principally ammonia and phenol, it was found that the B. rhodani larvae died quicker than expected indicating the presence of other toxic chemicals. This exemplifies the value of using direct toxicity assessments to detect the presence of unknown toxicants.  相似文献

This study examines the acute and chronic effects of the insecticide (S)-methoprene on the survival and reproduction of the freshwater cladoceran Moina macrocopa. In laboratory toxicity tests, the 24- and 48-h LC50 values for (S)-methoprene were 0.51 and 0.34 mg litre(-1), respectively. Survival, longevity and fecundity were reduced at 0.05 mg litre(-1) and higher concentrations. At 0.005 and 0.01 mg litre(-1), longevity and fecundity increased slightly as compared to control animals. If environmental concentrations of methoprene do not exceed 0.05 mg litre(-1), as is generally the case, application of this insecticide is unlikely to induce detrimental effects on natural cladoceran populations. The stimulatory effect of very low levels of methoprene on reproductive performance is consistent with the hypothesis of a regulatory role of juvenile hormone-like compounds in crustacean reproduction.  相似文献

The effluent from a facultative pond loaded at 80 kg BOD ha(-1) day(-1) was treated in a subsurface horizontal-flow aerated rock filter (RF) and a subsurface horizontal-flow constructed wetland (CW) planted with Typha latifolia. Over a 12-month monitoring period BOD and TSS removals were higher, and effluent ammonia concentrations lower, in the RF than in the CW (> 75% vs. 25-75%, and 3.6 mg N L(-1) vs. 6 mg N L(-1), respectively). However, the ammonia concentration was lower in the CW effluent than in the aerated RF effluent during mid-July to mid-September (1.1 mg N L(-1) vs. 2.2 mg N L(-1)), but in winter it was higher than the influent concentration. Overall the performance of the aerated RF was better and more consistent than that of the CW.  相似文献

Nitrate nitrogen was measured in runoff and tile-drainage during two years of operation of instrumented, large-scale lysimeters planted to corn (Zea mays L.) and amended with sewage sludge which was applied at rates supplying total N amounting to 2292 kg ha(-) in 1972 and 3286 kg ha(-1) in 1973. Other lysimeters were amended with inorganic fertiliser at the rate of 336 kg N ha(-1) year(-1). Annual losses in runoff and tile-drainage from sludge treatments were 0.9 and 5.1 and 371 and 663 kg NO(3)(-)-N ha(-1). Losses from lysimeters treated with inorganic fertiliser were 1.1 and 3.3 kg NO(3)(-)-N ha(-1) year(-1) in runoff and 31 and 79 kg NO(3)(-)-N ha(-1) year(-1) in tile-drainage. Given the nitrogen inputs accounted for in the study design, unaccounted for losses of 1800 to 2400 kg ha(-1) year(-1) were calculated for sludge and 277 kg ha(-1) year(-1) for inorganic fertiliser treatments. For one year there was a 300 kg ha(-1) increase in N in the lysimeters receiving inorganic fertiliser. Median NO(3)(-)-N concentrations ranged from 8.9 to 14.0 mg litre(-1) in runoff from sludge-treated lysimeters and 3.6 to 5.9 mg litre(-1) in runoff from lysimeters receiving inorganic fertiliser. In tile-drainage the median NO(3)(-)-N concentrations were 148 to 223 mg litre(-1) and 24 to 44 mg litre(-1) for sludge and inorganic fertiliser treatments, respectively. Highest runoff levels occurred in early summer storms, whereas highest tile-drainage concentrations occurred in late winter and early spring.  相似文献

Thiocyanate is present in appreciable concentration in coal carbonization wastewater along with other toxicants like phenols, cyanide, sulphide and ammonia. This paper encompasses studies on biodegradation of thiocyanate by a microbial consortium obtained from a biological treatment plant receiving coal carbonization wastewater. Effects of secondary toxicants and growth stimulants on thiocyanate oxidation by the consortium, and thiocyanate transformation in actual and partially treated coal carbonization waste, have also been studied. Results indicate that the consortium can degrade thiocyanate up to 1400 mg litre(-1) in batch culture with 10 mg litre(-1) of initial inoculum within a period of 6 days. Phenol above 500 mg litre(-1) and cyanide at 10 mg litre(-1) completely inhibits thiocyanate oxidation. Sulphide at 32 mg litre(-1) and ammonia at 4000 mg litre(-1) at neutral pH prolongs thiocyanate oxidation from 3 to 6 days and from 4 to 7.5 days, respectively. These studies reveal that elimination of phenolics, their oxidized products, ammonia, cyanides and sulphides is a pre-requisite for effective thiocyanate removal from the waste by the consortium. Bacteria of the genera Pseudomonas and Bacillus dominate the consortium.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess certain physiological responses of Lemna minor L. (duckweed) and Allium cepa L. (onion) to aquatic mercury at low concentrations. Following a 96-h exposure of plants to nutrient medium contaminated with known levels of mercuric chloride (HgCl(2)), 0.001 to 4 mg litre(-1) (0.0007 to 2.95 mg Hg litre(-1)) or methyl mercuric chloride (MeHgCl(2)), 0.0001 to 0.1 mg litre(-1) (0.0007 to 0.07 mg Hg litre(-1)), the physiological endpoints measured were the growth of fronds (Lemna minor) or roots (Allium cepa), and catalase and peroxidase activities in both plant assays. The EC(50) for HgCl(2) on the basis of the growth curve of Lemna minor was found to be 2.1 mg litre(-1). HgCl(2) and MeHgCl(2) were lethal to L. minor at concentrations of 4 and 0.01 mg litre(-1), respectively. The range of low concentrations that accelerated growth as well as enzymic activities in L. minor was 0.004 to 0.04 mg litre(-1) for HgCl(2) and 0.001 mg litre(-1) for MeHgCl(2). HgCl(2) and MeHgCl(2) induced maximum enzymic activity in Lemna fronds at concentrations of 0.008 and 0.0005 mg litre(-1), respectively. In Allium roots, catalase activity was accelerated at all the concentrations of HgCl(2) (0.001-2 mg litre(-1)) and MeHgCl(2) (0.0001-0.1 mg litre(-1)) tested. The activity of peroxidase was, however, accelerated by HgCl(2) at concentration range 0.01-1.0 mg litre(-1), or by MeHgCl(2) at 0.001 mg litre(-1). The concentrations of HgCl(2) and MeHgCl(2) that induced the highest enzymic activity in Allium roots were 0.05 mg litre(-1) and 0.001 mg litre(-1), respectively.  相似文献

Pharmaceutical substances have been detected in sewage effluents as well as receiving waters in many parts of the world. In this study, the occurrence and removal of a number of drug compounds were studied within a large sewage treatment plant in the south of England. Samples were processed using solid phase extraction and analysed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results demonstrate that ibuprofen, paracetamol, salbutamol and mefenamic acid were present in both the influent and effluent of the works while propranolol-HCl was not found above the limit of quantification in any sample. Elimination rates were circa 90% for each compound but several hundred nanograms per litre were still present in the final effluent.  相似文献

Dose-response studies with ethylenediurea (EDU) and radish   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
There is some concern that the antiozonant ethylenediurea (EDU), used for crop loss assessment due to ambient ozone (O3) may per se affect plant growth and yield. In view of this, and to provide knowledge for later field experiments, dose-response studies with EDU and O3 were carried out in greenhouses in winter and spring 1989, using radish (Raphanus sativus L.) cv. 'Cherry Belle' and 'Red Prince', grown in two different substrates. EDU was applied as a single or repeated soil drench in concentrations ranging from 300 to 800 mg litre(-1) in the first, and from 100 to 400 mg litre(-1) in the second trial. In the second experiment, plants were exposed to a chronic level of O3, mimicking ambient patterns, or to filtered air after the EDU-treatment. When applied in concentrations above 300 mg litre(-1), EDU reduced growth, thereby affecting the development of the thickened hypocotyl far more than the shoot growth that was partially stimulated by lower doses of EDU. Phytotoxic symptoms on the leaves, attributable to EDU, were observed at concentrations above 200 mg litre(-1), but complete protection from visible O3-injury was provided by a single application of EDU at a concentration as low as 100 mg litre(-1). Significant interactions on growth characters measured between O3-exposure and EDU application were observed only in one of the substrates. While these results demonstrate the need for careful dose-response studies prior to field assessments, they also provide evidence of a dosage that is effective in protecting radish from O3 damage without interfering with plant growth itself.  相似文献

It is estimated that explosives contaminate approximately 0.82 million cubic metres of soil at former military installations throughout the US; major contaminants often include 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and its degradation products. At some sites, phytoremediation may be a viable option to incineration or other costly remediation treatments. Grasses may be particularly suited for remediation because of their growth habit and adaptability to a wide range of soil and climate conditions. We characterized the effects of TNT on germination and early seedling development of switchgrass and smooth bromegrass to evaluate their potential use on contaminated sites. Switchgrass and smooth bromegrass seeds were germinated in nutrient-free agar containing 0 to 60 mg TNT litre(-1). Smooth bromegrass germination decreased as TNT concentration increased, while switchgrass germination was unaffected by TNT. Concentrations up to 15 mg TNT litre(-1) did not affect switchgrass root growth rate, but bromegrass root growth was reduced at TNT concentrations above 7.5 mg litre(-1). At 7.5 mg TNT litre(-1), however, shoot growth rate was reduced in both species. Examination at 20-fold magnification revealed switchgrass radicles were unaffected by TNT, while smooth bromegrass radicles appeared slightly swollen. Results indicate switchgrass is more tolerant of TNT than smooth bromegrass, but the establishment of both species may be limited to soil containing less than 50 mg kg(-1) of extractable TNT.  相似文献

Clopyralid, picloram, 2,4-D and a mixture of 2,4-D plus picloram, (Tordon 202C) were added to the water of 1 m square enclosures in a prairie wetland in Saskatchewan, Canada to produce concentrations of 0.01 and 0.1 mg active ingredient litre(-1). Effects on the submersed macrophytes, Potamogeton pectinatus and Myriophyllum sibiricum, were monitored by taking repeated measurements of plant weight, flower and tuber production and inspecting for injuries at 30 and 60 days after application. Clopyralid did not inhibit weight gain (growth) in either species, but stimulated growth and flowering by M. sibiricum at 0.01 mg litre(-1) and tuber production by P. pectinatus at both rates. The low rate of 2,4-D stimulated flowering by M. sibiricum and tuber production by P. pectinatus, whereas the high rate inhibited growth of M. sibiricum and injured both species. Picloram did not affect growth of either species, but injured M. sibiricum at both concentrations and inhibited flowering at 0.1 mg litre(-1). Tordon 202C at 0.1 mg litre(-1) caused reduced growth and flowering in M. sibiricum and injured both species; 0.01 mg litre(-1) also injured M. sibiricum. Mortality resulted only from Tordon 202C and 2,4-D. Field data are lacking to assess the extent to which submerged macrophytes in prairie ponds are exposed to harmful concentrations of herbicide from aerial spraying, drift from ground application, runoff or wind erosion of soil.  相似文献

Trout farm effluents: characterization and impact on the receiving streams   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Effluents from three rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farms located in Northern Portugal were characterized and their impact on the receiving streams was evaluated. Mean fish productions in the studied fish farms were 15, 55 and 500 t of trout per year, respectively. The feeding water was abstracted from Fornelo, Inha and Coura Rivers, at flow rates ranging from 1.2 (15 t year(-1) fish farm) to 4.8 litre s(-1) per ton annual fish production (500 t year(-1) fish farm). As the water flows through the farms, net variations in the chemical characteristics were observed: a mean reduction in the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration between 0.7 and 2.4 mg litre(-1); mean increases between 1.9 and 3.2 mg CaCO3 litre(-1) for total alkalinity, between 0.9 and 14 mg litre(-1) for BOD5, between 0.27 and 1.46 mg litre(-1) for ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N), between 0.060 and 0.579 mg litre(-1) for soluble phosphorus (PO4-P) and less than 16 mg litre(-1) for suspended solids; variations in the pH value and nitrate nitrogen concentration were not statistically significant (p<0.05). At the 500 t year(-1) fish farm it was also possible to detect net increases of total hardness (3.2 mg CaCO3 litre(-1)), electric conductivity (19 mS cm(-1)) and permanganate value (3.6 mgO2 litre(-1)). At the other farms net variations in these parameters were not significant. Net mass flow variations reported to the annual fish production are presented. The DO mass flow decreased, on average, between 255 and 549 g t(-1) of fish per day. The mean daily BOD5 increase ranged from 353 to 1510 g t(-1) of fish. The corresponding ranges for the other parameters were 105-157 g t(-1) for NH4-N, 24-62 g t(-1) for PO4-P, 348-1035 g CaCO3 t(-1) for total alkalinity and 224 x 10(6)-506 x 10(6) t(-1) for mesophilic bacteria. Daily net variations of suspended solids, total hardness, electric conductivity and permanganate value were below 1753 g t(-1), 342 g CaCO3 t(-1), 2081 mS cm t(-1) and 392 gO2 t(-1), respectively. Longitudinal concentration profiles for the most relevant parameters show the impact of the effluent discharges on the physico-chemical and bacteriological river water quality downstream from the trout farms. Analyzing the situations from a purely chemical point of view, the polluted stretches were 3, 5 and 12 km long downstream from the effluent discharges, respectively. Chemical and biological responses to simultaneous additions of acid, aluminium and lime were investigated in contiguous 250m-reaches of a chronically acidic stream in Wales. Treatments were applied for 24 h, and from the upstream end were as follows: zone A-untreated, pH 5.0, 0.37 mg litre(-1) filterable Al; zone B-acidified to pH 4.5, 0.40 mg Al litre(-1) (47% of Al attributed to release from the stream bed due to acid additions); zone C-acidified to pH 4.5 and Al dosed to 0.67 mg litre(-1); zone D-dosed with limestone slurry, resulting in pH 7.2, 0.13 mg Al litre(-1). In all reaches, the chemistry of the interstitial water at depths of 0.15 and 0.3 m never fell below pH 5.5, with corresponding decreases in Al and increases in base cation concentrations. Brown trout, Salmo trutta, and crayfish, Austropotamobius pallipes, held in the stream showed decreases in plasma [Na(+)] and haemolymph [Na(+)], respectively, in all acidic zones (A, B, C): these responses were mitigated by liming (zone D). Thus both chronic and simulated episodic levels of pH and dissolved Al were sub-lethally toxic to test species of aquatic fauna. This experiment also demonstrates a stream bed source/sink of Al, and the availability of a possible refuge from acidic surface waters within the substratum.  相似文献

A year-long survey, with samples collected weekly, was conducted to estimate long-term average concentrations of arsenic in treated and untreated drinking water for the city of Hamilton, New Zealand. The average concentration of arsenic in Waikato River water at Hamilton before processing was found to be (32.1 +/- 3.7) microg litre(-1), about three times above the new WHO limit of 10 microg litre(-1). However, full conventional water treatment effects a five-fold reduction in arsenic concentrations in drinking water to a level which meets the new standards of (6.2 +/- 0.8) microg litre(-1). The results of both this study and retrospective analysis of archived data suggest that total arsenic concentrations in the Waikato River are likely to follow a regular seasonal variation, being about 10-25 microg litre(-1) higher in the summer months. Changes in river flow rates have an almost negligible effect on the summer peak and winter trough; it is proposed that most of the variation in total arsenic concentrations may be due to the seasonal conversion of arsenic in the river sediments to more soluble forms.  相似文献

The effect of the oil-spill dispersant Corexit 9527 on egg-hatching rate of Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) was studied by using an innovated flow-through bioassay technique. This bioassay method relies on the fact that M. rosenbergii fertilized eggs when detached from the mother prawn were able to hatch artificially. The flow-through system generated a stable and good water quality environment for hatching the eggs successfully. The Corexit 9527 had a pronounced effect on hatching rate of the M. rosenbergii eggs. In the control, the hatching rate of the eggs was 95.55% +/- 1.74%. However, it was reduced drastically with increasing concentrations of Corexit 9527. A 100% inhibition of egg hatchability was found when the level of Corexit 9527 was higher than 250 mg litre(-1). The EC(50) and the EC(95) values estimated by the probit method were 80.4 +/- 5.5 mg litre(-1) and 193.5 +/- 39.9 mg litre(-1) respectively (P = 0.05). The recommended safety level of Corexit 9527 for M. rosenbergii in Malaysian estuarine waters is below 40 mg litre(-1).  相似文献

The toxicity of nonylphenol to the common mussel (Mytilus edulis L.) has been determined in both semistatic and continuous flow test systems. The LC50 values obtained were for 96 h, 30 mg litre(-1); 360 h, 0.5 mg litre(-1); and 850 h, 0.14 mg litre(-1). Sublethal effects, manifested as decreased byssus strength and change of scope for growth, were obtained at a concentration as low as 0.056 mg litre(-1). Fertilization and early developmental success were not affected at the highest concentration tested (0.2 mg litre(-1)).  相似文献

Novel thio-substituted flexible polyurethane foam (T-PUF) was synthesised by addition polymerisation of mercaptan with the precursors of an open-cell polyurethane foam, which can be used as a highly selective sorbent for inorganic and organic mercury from complex matrices. The percentage extraction of inorganic mercury was studied at different flow-rates, over a wide pH range at different concentrations ranging from 1 ppm, to 100 ppm. The break-through capacity and total capacity of unmodified and thio-foams were determined for inorganic and organic mercurials. The absorption efficiency of thio-foam was far superior to other sorbent media, such as activated carbon, polymeric ion-exchange resins and reagent-loaded polyurethane foams. It was observed that even at the 1000 ppm level, divalent ions like Cu, Mg, Ca, Zn do not appreciably influence the per cent extraction of inorganic mercury at the 10 ppm level. These matrix levels are the most concentrated ones which are likely to occur, both in local sewage and effluent waters. Further, the efficiency of this foam was sufficiently high at 10-100 ppm levels of Hg, even from 5-10 litres of effluent volumes using 50 g of thio-foam packed into different columns in series. Thio-foams were found to possess excellent abilities to remove and recover mercury even at low levels from industrial effluents and brine mud of chlor-alkali industry after pre-acid extraction. This makes it a highly efficient sorbent for possible application in effluent treatment. Model schemes for the removal and recovery of mercury from industrial effluents and municipal sewage (100-1000 litre) by a dynamic method are proposed and the costs incurred in a full-scale application method are indicated to show that the use of thio-foam could be commercially attractive.  相似文献

The impact of a major spillage of the insecticide 'Dursban' on the riffle macroinvertebrates along 19 km of the River Roding, Essex, is described. Five affected riffles and an upstream control were kick-sampled at approximately 10-week intervals for two years following the spill, and the results are compared with species composition and relative abundance data collected from the same sites during the previous six years. Initial concentrations of the active ingredient, chlorpyrifos, in river water (up to 2.5 mg litre(-1)) exceeded the level lethal to all the aquatic arthropods present by at least 10-fold, and this group of macroinvertebrates was eliminated. Molluscs and annelids, which are relatively tolerant of chlorpyrifos, survived. Since these groups already dominated the lowermost urban reaches, the impact of the spill was greatest further upstream, where reaches with a better water quality previously supported a more diverse and abundant arthropod fauna. Chlorpyrifos residues in water declined below 1 microg litre(-1) within 11 weeks, but sediment within 5 km of the spillage site remained highly contaminated for considerably longer. Of ten arthropod taxa previously common to all sites, chironomid larvae were first to recolonise affected reaches, 13 weeks after the spill. The isopod Asellus aquaticus, was also quick to recover. Although other arthropods had recolonised most sites within 79 weeks, the coleopteran Oulimnius tuberculatus and the epheremeropteran Caenis moesta had failed to return to the lowermost reaches after 108 weeks. Downstream drift was probably the principal factor influencing the pattern of arthropod recolonisation, with the location and aquatic fauna of tributary streams entering the affected reaches being particularly important.  相似文献

We assessed the threshold concentrations for toxic effects by lindane on a zooplankton community using mesocosms in a natural pond. Enclosures (1000 litres) were treated to give mean concentrations of 0, 2, 6, 12, 18, 24, and 50 microg litre(-1) over a test period of 39 days. Larvae of the phantom midge Chaoborus flavicans showed a high susceptibility to lindane and were virtually eliminated from enclosures with > or =12 microg litre(-1) 4 days after application. Populations of cyclopoid nauplii (Eucyclops serrulatus) were reduced at a lindane concentration of 2 microg litre(-1) and showed high mortality after 11 days exposure to > or =6 g litre(-1). No lindane-induced effects could be seen in the cladoceran species Daphnia longispina and Chydorus sphaericus. Rotifer species were probably not directly affected by lindane; however loss of the principal predator Chaoborus was accompanied by an increase in the numbers of Asplanchna priodonta. A simultaneous decrease in Keratella quadrata possibly reflected predation since its decline showed no dose-response relationship with lindane and it is among the major prey of Asplanchna. Such complex secondary effects, occurring through trophic interactions between a predator and two co-occurring prey, would not have been predicted from single-species toxicity tests. These, and effects on cyclopoid populations that occurred predominantly through the mortality of nauplii, demonstrate the value of toxicological studies on natural communities. We conclude that a combination of laboratory and field investigations, coupled with mono-species and community assessments, provide the best route for understanding the effects of toxicants such as lindane for regulatory purposes.  相似文献

A laboratory-scale activated sludge process was developed to reduce the pollution load of a dye-industry waste, containing aniline, phenol, methyl violet and rhodamine B as its major components. The waste exerted an organic load of 5576 mg litre(-1) as the chemical oxygen demand (COD), of 896 mg litre(-1) as total organic carbon (TOC), and had a 31.5 mg litre(-1) phenol content. A microbial sludge, capable of growing on the waste, was developed from cattle dung, adapted to the waste and used as a bioinoculum for the process. This resulted in reductions of 60% in COD, 37% in TOC, and 92% in phenol content, and a decrease in optical density of the colour of the waste from an initial 0.915 to 0.360 at 580 nm. Microorganisms isolated from sludge were identified as Pseudomonas alcaligenes and P. mendocina.  相似文献
