PM10 measurements were started in November 1992 at Melpitz site. The mean PM10 concentration in 1993 was 38 μg m?3 in the summer season (May until October) and about 44 μg m?3 in the winter season (November until April). The mean PM10 level decreased until 1999 and varies now in ranges from 20–34 μg m?3 to 17–24 μg m?3 (minimum and maximum mean values for 1999–2008) in winter and summer seasons, respectively. High volume filter samples of particles PM10, PM2.5 and PM1 were characterized for mass, water-soluble ions, organic and elemental carbon from 2004 until 2008. The percentage of PM2.5 in PM10 varies between summer (71.6%) and winter seasons (81.9%). Mean concentrations of PM10, PM2.5 and PM1 in Melpitz were 20, 15, and 13 μg m?3 in 2004, 22, 18, and 13 μg m?3 in 2005, 24, 19, and 12 μg m?3 in 2006 and 22, 17, and 12 μg m?3 in 2007, respectively. In the four winters the rural background concentration PM10 at Melpitz exceeded the daily 50 μg m?3 limit for Europe on 8, 8, 7 and 6 days, respectively.Findings for a simple two-sector-classification of the samples (May 2004 until April 2008) using 96-h backward trajectories for the identification of source regions are: Air masses were transported most of time (60%) from the western sector and secondly (17%) from the eastern sector. The lowest daily mean mass concentration PM10 were found during western inflow in summer (17 μg m?3) containing low amounts of sulphate (2.4 μg m?3), nitrate (1.7 μg m?3), ammonium (1.1 μg m?3) and TC (3.7 μg m?3). In opposite the highest mean mass concentration PM10 was found during eastern inflow in winter (35 μg m?3) with high amounts of sulphate (6.1 μg m?3), nitrate (5.4 μg m?3), ammonium (3.8 μg m?3) and TC (9.4 μg m?3). An estimation of secondary formed OC (SOA) shows 0.8–0.9 μg m?3 for air masses from West and 2.1–2.2 μg m?3 from East. The seasonal difference can be neglected. The half-hourly measurements of the particle mass concentration PM10 evaluated as mean daily courses using a TEOM® show low values (14–21 μg m?3) in summer and winter for air masses transported from West and the highest concentrations (31–38 μg m?3) in winter for air masses from East. The results demonstrate the influence of meteorological parameters on long-range transport, secondary particle mass formation and re-emission which modify mass concentration and composition of PM10, PM2.5 and PM1. Melpitz site is located in the East of Germany faraway from strong local anthropogenic emissions (rural background). Therefore, this site is suitable for investigation of the influence of long-range transport of air pollution in continental air masses from the East with source regions inside and outside of the European Union.  相似文献

Fine particles were collected over four seasons from October 1995 to August 1996 to evaluate the chemical characteristics of principal PM2.5 components in Chongju, South Korea. The annual mean concentrations of PM2.5 (dp⩽2.5 μm), sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) were 44.2, 8.22, 3.63, 2.84, 4.44 and 4.99 μg m−3, respectively. The sum of the species measured from this study accounted for 50–62% of the PM2.5 mass. Sulfate was the most abundant species and constituted 13–23% of the PM2.5 mass. The EC and OC accounted for 17–28% of PM2.5. The correlation between OC and EC was strong, and the annual mean ratio of OC/EC was 1.12, suggesting that OC measured in the Chongju area may be emitted directly in particulate form as a primary aerosol.  相似文献

24-h PM2.5 carbonaceous samples were collected between 27 November and 9 December 1999 in Seoul, and between 7 and 20 June 2000 in Kwangju to investigate characteristics of carbonaceous species, and the relationship between elemental carbon (EC) and Aethalometer-based black carbon (BC) measurements. 5-min PM2.5 BC and criteria air pollutant data were also measured using the Aethalometer and ambient air monitoring system. The PM2.5 samples were analyzed for EC and OC using a selective thermal manganese dioxide oxidation (TMO) method. The daily average EC and OC concentrations in Seoul were higher in the winter than in the summer (Atmos. Environ. 35 (2001a) 657). It was found that difference between ambient BC levels in the two cities was not directly proportional to the population ratio (∼8) or diesel traffic ratio (∼5.9) since particulate matter or BC concentration is strongly influenced by a result of varying traffic and meteorological conditions at the site. Using the primary OC/EC ratio approach, the results suggest that most of the measured OC in Kwangju is of primary origin during the summer. In Seoul, the observed OC includes additional secondary organic aerosol during the wintertime conditions. The relationship between the 24-h TMO-EC and Aethalometer BC measurements in PM2.5 reflected very good agreement for the two urban sites, with correlation coefficients of R2=0.99 and 0.92, and BC/EC slopes of 0.93 and 1.07, respectively. It was found that comparing TMO-EC to BC at a different location in Korea, a different scaling factor was needed.  相似文献

Total number concentrations, number concentrations of ultrafine (0.01–0.1 μm) and accumulation (0.1–0.5 μm) particles, as well as mass concentration of PM2.5 particles and blackness of PM2.5 filters, which is related to Black Smoke were simultaneously monitored in three European cities during the winter period for three and a half months. The purpose of the study was to describe the differences in concentration levels and daily and diurnal variations in particle number and mass concentrations between European cities. The results show statistically significant differences in the concentrations of PM2.5 and the blackness of the PM2.5 filters between the cities, but not in the concentrations of ultrafine particles. Daily PM2.5 levels were found to be poorly correlated with the daily total and ultrafine number concentrations but better correlated with the number concentration of accumulation particles. According to the principal component analysis airborne particulate pollutants seem to be divided into two major source categories, one identified with particle number concentrations and the other related to mass-based information. The present results underline the importance of using both particle number and mass concentrations to evaluate urban air quality.  相似文献

To investigate the chemical characteristics of fine particles in the Sihwa area, Korea, atmospheric aerosol samples were collected using a dichotomous PM10 sampler and two URG PM2.5 cyclone samplers during five intensive sampling periods between February 1998 and February 1999. The Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP)-Atomic Emission Spectrometry (AES)/ICP-Mass Spectrometry (MS), ion chromatograph (IC), and thermal manganese dioxide oxidation (TMO) methods were used to analyze the trace elements, ionic species, and carbonaceous species, respectively. Backward trajectory analysis, factor analysis, and a chemical mass balance (CMB) model were used to estimate quantitatively source contributions to PM2.5 particles collected in the Sihwa area. The results of PM2.5 source apportionment using the CMB7 receptor model showed that (NH4)2SO4 was, on average, the major contributor to PM2.5 particles, followed by nontraffic organic carbon (OC) emission, NH4NO3, agricultural waste burning, motor vehicle emission, road dust, waste incineration, marine aerosol, and others. Here, the nontraffic OC sources include primary anthropogenic OC emitted from the industrial complex zone, secondary OC, and organic species from distant sources. The source impact of waste incineration emission became significant when the dominant wind directions were from southwest and west sectors during the sampling periods. It was found that PM2.5 particles in the Sihwa area were influenced mainly by both anthropogenic local sources and long-range transport and transformation of air pollutants.  相似文献

Organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) concentrations, associated to PM10 and PM2.5 particle fractions, were concurrently determined during the warm and the cold months of the year (July–September 2011 and February–April 2012, respectively) at two urban sites in the city of Thessaloniki, northern Greece, an urban-traffic site (UT) and an urban-background site (UB). Concentrations at the UT site (11.3?±?5.0 and 8.44?±?4.08 14 μg m?3 for OC10 and OC2.5 vs. 6.56?±?2.14 and 5.29?±?1.54 μg m?3 for EC10 and EC2.5) were among the highest values reported for urban sites in European cities. Significantly lower concentrations were found at the UB site for both carbonaceous species, particularly for EC (6.62?±?4.59 and 5.72?±?4.36 μg m?3 for OC10 and OC2.5 vs. 0.93?±?0.61 and 0.69?±?0.39 μg m?3 for EC10 and EC2.5). Despite that, a negative UT-UB increment was frequently evidenced for OC2.5 and PM2.5 in the cold months possibly indicative of emissions from residential wood burning at the urban-background site. At both sites, cconcentrations of OC fractions were significantly higher in the cold months; on the contrary, EC fractions at the UT site were prominent in the warm season suggesting some influence from maritime emissions in the nearby harbor area. Secondary organic carbon, being estimated using the EC tracer method and seasonally minimum OC/EC ratios, was found to be an appreciable component of particle mass particularly in the cold season. The calculated secondary contributions to OC ranged between 35 and 59 % in the PM10 fraction, with relatively higher values in the PM2.5 fraction (39–61 %). The source origin of carbonaceous species was investigated by means of air parcel back trajectories, satellite fire maps, and concentration roses. A local origin was mainly concluded for OC and EC with limited possibility for long range transport of biomass (agricultural waste) burning aerosol.  相似文献

The characterization of carbonaceous species in PM2.5 during a spring period in a suburb of Xi'an, China was investigated. PM2.5 samples were collected on quartz filters and analyzed for organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC). The thermal optical reflectance method was used. The minimum OC/EC ratio method was used to estimate the concentration of secondary organic carbon (SOC). The distribution of eight carbon fractions was investigated as well. The average mass concentrations of OC and EC were 15.90 and 8.38 μg/m3, respectively. The average OC/EC ratio ranged from 1.16 to 3.16 with an average value of 2.25. This implies the existence of SOC in PM2.5. The mean SOC concentration was 7.20 μg/m3, accounting for 45.28% of total OC. This result suggests that SOC is a significant component of OC in the suburb of Xi'an. Results from the distribution of eight carbon fractions revealed that emissions from motor vehicle, coal combustion, and road dust were the main source of carbonaceous particles in the sampling period.  相似文献

Fine particles (PM2.5) were collected during all four seasons, from April 2001 to February 2002, in Seoul, South Korea, using an annular denuder system. Elemental compositions of ambient PM2.5 were analyzed using the proton-induced X-ray emission method. The greatest contributors (> or = 2%) to the PM2.5 mass were sulfur (S), silicon (Si), chlorine (Cl), aluminum (Al), and iron (Fe) in the spring; S in the summer; and S and Cl in the fall. S, Cl, and Si were the major elements in the winter. S was the most abundant species among the elements, ranging from 5.3 to 7.9%, followed by Si and Cl. From analysis of variance, PM2.5 mass, Al, Si, potassium, calcium, and Fe showed significant seasonal differences during the four seasons (p < 0.001). Enrichment factor (EF) analysis was carried out to identify the sources affecting the aerosol in the Seoul area. On the basis of the mean EF values, elemental S, copper, zinc, and lead may be emitted from anthropogenic sources (EF > 50). Elemental Al, Si, titanium, and Fe may be emitted from crustal sources (EF < 3). Additionally, a correlation analysis was carried out for source identification. The results of the correlation analysis were confirmed by the results of the EF analysis.  相似文献

Aeolian dust episodes (ADEs) have been an emergency disaster in the Kaoping River Valley during the rainy season (May-September), which can severely deteriorate ambient particulate air quality in the region surrounding the Kaoping River. Thus, this study aims to characterize the metallic fingerprint of Aeolian dust (AD) and investigate the effects of ADEs on ambient particulate air quality along the Kaoping River Valley. Four manual sampling sites adjacent to the riverside were selected to collect fine (PM2.5) and coarse (PM2.5–10) aerosol samples during and after the ADEs in the periods of six events. A total of 13 metallic elements were analyzed using an inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer. With metallic elements analysis and nonparametric statistical methods of Wilcoxon rank-sum test and Kruskal-Wallis test, this study successfully derived the metallic indicators of ADEs. The mass ratios of crustal elements (Fe, Ca, or Al) to reference element (Cd) obtained during the ADEs were much higher than those obtained after the ADEs. High mass ratios of Fe/Cd, Ca/Cd, and Al/Cd in PM2.5-10 were observed on the influenced areas of ADEs. Among them, (Fe/Cd)2.5-10 was proven as the best indicator which can be applied to effectively validate the existence of ADEs and evaluate their influences on ambient air quality. Moreover, PM2.5 concentrations during the ADEs were 3-3.6 fold higher than those after the ADEs. PM2.5 should be a contributor to AD, even though the mass ratios of PM2.5/PM10 ranged from 0.05 to 0.20 during the ADEs. Our findings provide valuable information regarding the characteristics of the AD during the ADEs in the Kaoping River.

Implications: Indicators of (Fe/Cd)2.5-10 are approximately applied to observe the effects of ADEs. Local governments could realize the mechanisms of S- and NW-type aeolian dust episodes (ADEs). They can cause deterioration in different ways for the regional air quality surrounding Kaoping River Valley. Residents who have been living in the influenced areas can take precautions to prevent damage from aeolian dust. Strategies for curbing ADEs must reduce the area of bare lands by artificial measures in the long period of the sunny days during the rainy season. Future research should examine physical conditions of topsoils and other chemical composition in aeolian dust.  相似文献

The concentrations of PM2.5−10, PM2.5 and associated water-soluble inorganic species (WSIS) were determined in a coastal site of the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil, from October 1998 to September 1999 (n=50). Samples were dissolved in water and analyzed for major inorganic ions. The mean (± standard deviation; median) concentrations of PM2.5−10 and PM2.5 were, respectively, 26 (± 16; 21) μg m−3 and 17 (± 13; 14) μg m−3. Their mean concentrations were 1.7–1.8 times higher in dry season (May–October) than in rainy season (November–April). The WSIS comprised, respectively, 34% and 28% of the PM2.5−10 and PM2.5 masses. Chloride, Na+ and Mg2+ were the predominant ions in PM2.5−10, indicating a significant influence of sea-salt aerosols. In PM2.5, SO42− (∼97% nss-SO42−) and NH4+ were the most abundant ions and their equivalent concentration ratio (SO42−/NH4+ ∼1.0) suggests that they were present as (NH4)2SO4 particles. The mean concentration of (NH4)2SO4 was 3.4 μg m−3. The mean equivalent PM2.5 NO3 concentration was eight times smaller than those of SO42− and NH4+. The PM2.5 NO3 concentration in dry season was three times higher than in rainy season, probably due to reaction of NaCl (sea salt) with HNO3 as a result of higher levels of NOy during the dry season and/or reduced volatilization of NH4NO3 due to lower wintertime temperature. Chloride depletion was observed in both size ranges, although more pronouncely in PM2.5.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study is to analyze the elemental composition and the concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 in the Guaíba Hydrographic Basin with HV PM10 and dichotomous samplers. Three sampling sites were selected: 8° Distrito, CEASA and Charqueadas. The sampling was conducted from October 2001 to December 2002. The mass concentrations of the samplers were evaluated, while the elemental concentrations of Si, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu and Zn were determined using the Particle-Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) technique. Factor Analysis and Canonical Correlation Analysis were applied to the chemical and meteorological variables in order to identify the sources of particulate matter. Industrial activities such as steel plants, coal-fired power plants, hospital waste burning, vehicular emissions and soil were identified as the sources of the particulate matter. Concentration levels higher than the daily and the annual average air quality standards (150 and 50 μg m−3, respectively) set by the Brazilian legislation were not observed.  相似文献

Organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in fine particles (PM2.5) at two background sites, Kosan and Kangwha in Korea were measured during intensive field studies between 1994 and 1999. Fine particles were collected on pre-fired quartz filters in a low-volume sampler and analyzed using the selective thermal oxidation method with MnO2 catalyst. The OC and EC concentrations at Kosan located at western tip of Cheju Island in southern Korea are lower than those at Kangwha located at western coastal area in mid-Korean peninsula. Still, the OC concentrations at Kosan are generally higher than those at other background areas in Japan and USA. The EC concentrations at Kosan are lower than or comparable to those at other background areas. The total carbon (TC, sum of OC and EC) to EC ratio values at both sites were higher than those at other background areas in Japan and USA. At Kosan, the OC and EC concentrations when air parcels were from southern China were higher than those when air parcels were coming from northern China. However, at Kangwha, the differences were statistically not clear since most air parcels were from northern China. Except when air parcels were from the North Pacific during summer, the OC and EC concentrations are well correlated indicating that both OC and EC share the same emission/transport characteristics. From the gaseous hydrocarbon data and the OC and EC relationship, it was found that during summer local biogenic emissions of OC might be significant at Kosan.  相似文献

Fine particles in urban atmospheres contain substantial quantities of semi-volatile material [e.g., NH4NO3 and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs)] that are lost from particles during collection on a filter. Several diffusion denuder samplers have been developed for the determination of both NO3- and organic semi-volatile fine particulate components. The combination of technology used in the BOSS diffusion denuder sampler and the Harvard particle concentrator has resulted in the Particle Concentrator-Brigham Young University Organic Sampling System (PC-BOSS) for the 24-hr (or less) integrated collection of PM2.5, including NH4NO3 and semi-volatile organic material. Modification of the BOSS sampler allows for the weekly determination of these same species. Combination of BOSS denuder and tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM) monitor technology has resulted in the real-time ambient mass sampler (RAMS) for the continuous measurement of PM2.5, including the semi-volatile components. Comparison of the results obtained with the BOSS and with each of the newly developed modifications of the BOSS indicates that the modified versions can be used for the continuous, daily, or weekly monitoring of PM2.5, including semi-volatile species, as appropriate to the design of each sampler.  相似文献

This study investigates the water-soluble ionic constituents (Na+, K+, NH4 +, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl?, NO3 ?, SO4 2?) associated to PM2.5 particle fraction at two urban sites in the city of Thessaloniki, northern Greece, an urban traffic site (UT) and urban background site (UB). Ionic constituents represent a significant fraction of PM2.5 mass (29.6 at UT and 41.5 % at UB). The contribution of marine aerosol was low (<1.5 %). Secondary inorganic aerosols (SIA) represent a significant fraction of PM2.5 mass contributing to 26.9?±?12.4 % and 39.2?±?13.2 % at UT and UB sites, respectively. Nitrate and sulfate are fully neutralized by ammonium under the existing conditions. The ionic constituents were evaluated in relation to their spatial and temporal variation, their gaseous precursors, meteorological conditions, local and long-range transport.  相似文献

Continuous observation of PM2.5 was conducted in Taiyuan, a heavily polluted city in China, during high pollution season from December 2005 to February 2006. The results of this study showed that PM2.5 and carbonaceous species pollution were serious during winter in Taiyuan. The organic carbon (OC) and element carbon (EC) were accounted for 18.6±11.2% and 2.9±1.6% of PM2.5, respectively, which indicated that carbonaceous aerosols were key components for control fine particles pollution in Taiyuan. Coal combustion was a dominant source of OC and EC of PM2.5 in the urban area of Taiyuan during winter. The impact of local and remote particle sources on urban air quality was assessed using PM2.5 concentration rose and 3-day back trajectories of air masses arriving at Taiyuan. The meteorological conditions were found to affect the ambient concentrations of PM2.5, OC, EC and OC/EC ratio.  相似文献

The concentrations of monosaccharide anhydrides (levoglucosan, mannosan, galactosan) in PM1 and PM2.5 aerosol samples were measured in Brno and ?lapanice in the Czech Republic in winter and summer 2009. 56 aerosol samples were collected together at both sites to investigate the different sources that contribute to aerosol composition in studied localities. Daily PM1 and PM2.5 aerosol samples were collected on pre-fired quartz fibre filters. The sum of average atmospheric concentration of levoglucosan, mannosan and galactosan in PM1 aerosol in ?lapanice and Brno during winter was 513 and 273 ng m?3, while in summer the sum of average atmospheric concentration of monosaccharide anhydrides (MAs) was 42 and 38 ng m?3, respectively. The sum of average atmospheric concentration of MAs in PM1 aerosol formed 71 and 63% of the sum of MA concentration in PM2.5 aerosol collected in winter in ?lapanice and Brno, whereas in summer the sum of average atmospheric concentration of MAs in PM1 aerosol formed 45 and 43% of the sum of MA concentration in PM2.5 aerosol in ?lapanice and Brno, respectively. In winter, the sum of MAs contributed significantly to PM1 mass ranging between 1.37% and 2.67% of PM1 mass (Brno – ?lapanice), while in summer the contribution of the sum of MAs was smaller (0.28–0.32%). Contribution of the sum of MAs to PM2.5 mass is similar both in winter (1.37–2.71%) and summer (0.44–0.55%).The higher concentrations of monosaccharide anhydrides in aerosols in ?lapanice indicate higher biomass combustion in this location than in Brno during winter season. The comparison of levoglucosan concentration in PM1 and PM2.5 aerosol shows prevailing presence of levoglucosan in PM1 aerosol both in winter (72% on average) and summer (60% on average). The aerosol samples collected in ?lapanice and Brno in winter and summer show comparable contributions of levoglucosan, mannosan and galactosan to the total amount of monosaccharide anhydrides in both aerosol size fractions. Levoglucosan was the most abundant monosaccharide anhydride with a relative average contribution to the total amount of MAs in the range of 71–82% for PM1 aerosols and 52–79% for PM2.5 aerosols.  相似文献

PM2.5 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter <2.5 μm) samples were collected in the indoor environments of 15 urban homes and their adjacent outdoor environments in Alexandria, Egypt, during the spring time. Indoor and outdoor carbon dioxide (CO2) levels were also measured concurrently. The results showed that indoor and outdoor PM2.5 concentrations in the 15 sites, with daily averages of 45.5 ± 11.1 and 47.3 ± 12.9 µg/m3, respectively, were significantly higher than the ambient 24-hr PM2.5 standard of 35 µg/m3 recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The indoor PM2.5 and CO2 levels were correlated with the corresponding outdoor levels, demonstrating that outdoor convection and infiltration could lead to direct transportation indoors. Ventilation rates were also measured in the selected residences and ranged from 1.6 to 4.5 hr?1 with median value of 3.3 hr?1. The indoor/outdoor (I/O) ratios of the monitored homes varied from 0.73 to 1.65 with average value of 0.99 ± 0.26 for PM2.5, whereas those for CO2 ranged from 1.13 to 1.66 with average value of 1.41 ± 0.15. Indoor sources and personal activities, including smoking and cooking, were found to significantly influence indoor levels.

Implications: Few studies on indoor air quality were carried out in Egypt, and the scarce data resulted from such studies do not allow accurate assessment of the current situation to take necessary preventive actions. The current research investigates indoor levels of PM2.5 and CO2 in a number of homes located in the city of Alexandria as well as the potential contribution from both indoor and outdoor sources. The study draws attention of policymakers to the importance of the establishment of national indoor air quality standards to protect human health and control air pollution in different indoor environments.  相似文献

Concentrations of ultrafine (<0.1 μm) particles (UFPs) and PM2.5 (<2.5 μm) were measured whilst commuting along a similar route by train, bus, ferry and automobile in Sydney, Australia. One trip on each transport mode was undertaken during both morning and evening peak hours throughout a working week, for a total of 40 trips. Analyses comprised one-way ANOVA to compare overall (i.e. all trips combined) geometric mean concentrations of both particle fractions measured across transport modes, and assessment of both the correlation between wind speed and individual trip means of UFPs and PM2.5, and the correlation between the two particle fractions. Overall geometric mean concentrations of UFPs and PM2.5 ranged from 2.8 (train) to 8.4 (bus) × 104 particles cm?3 and 22.6 (automobile) to 29.6 (bus) μg m?3, respectively, and a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001) between modes was found for both particle fractions. Individual trip geometric mean concentrations were between 9.7 × 103 (train) and 2.2 × 105 (bus) particles cm?3 and 9.5 (train) to 78.7 (train) μg m?3. Estimated commuter exposures were variable, and the highest return trip mean PM2.5 exposure occurred in the ferry mode, whilst the highest UFP exposure occurred during bus trips. The correlation between fractions was generally poor, and in keeping with the duality of particle mass and number emissions in vehicle-dominated urban areas. Wind speed was negatively correlated with, and a generally poor determinant of, UFP and PM2.5 concentrations, suggesting a more significant role for other factors in determining commuter exposure.  相似文献
