Standard autoradiographic techniques were adapted to study the transport of carbon compounds in colonies of Membranipora membranacea (L.). The results indicate that there is transport of carbon-14 between polypides within a colony. Metabolite movement is generally in the direction of the rapidly growing colony edge. Estimates of metabolite transport rates are given. 相似文献

Morphologically plastic, cryptic, or geographically widespread species pose similar challenges to the evolutionary biologist: their taxonomic status is often unclear yet must be known to study almost any aspect of their biology, ecology, evolution, or biogeography. The marine bryozoan Membranipora membranacea (L.) is morphologically plastic and geographically widespread in temperate oceans of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, and its taxonomy is unclear. This study examined genetic relationships among allopatric populations and sympatric morphs of this species, or species complex. Colonies were collected from 1992 to 1995. Allozymes were used to elucidate the relationships among four widely separated populations, two in the North Atlantic and two in the North Pacific Ocean. Allozymes and mtDNA sequencing were used to clarify the genetic relationships among three sympatric morphs that might correspond to the species M. villosa Hincks and M. membranacea in the northeastern Pacific (Washington State). Populations in the North Atlantic and North Pacific had no fixed allelic differences at the loci tested but were separated by an average Nei's genetic distance of 0.581, suggesting their near-sibling species status. Populations from Friday Harbor (Washington) and Catalina Island (California) were not significantly differentiated, which was attributed to high gene flow. Populations on either side of the North Atlantic were genetically indistinguishable, which is most likely due to the recent establishment of the West Atlantic populations from European founders. At Friday Harbor, sympatric morphs varying in their spination and spine inducibility were genetically indistinguishable, supporting the hypothesis that M. villosa is an induced phenotype of M. membranacea and not a distinct species in the northeastern Pacific. Since such phenotypic plasticity is common in cheilostome bryozoans, the morphospecies concept must be used with caution. Received: 31 August 1998 / Accepted: 10 August 1999 相似文献

Colonies of the bryozoan Pentapora fascialis (Pallas) were monitored photographically from January 1993 to March 1994, in two quadrats at depths of 11 and 22 m at Tino
Island (Ligurian Sea, Italy). Colony size, shape, growth and mortality were analysed. Zoarial growth was measured as change
in the two-dimensional area of substratum covered per unit time. Colonies ranged in size from less than 30 to 2760 cm2. Colony shape was normally depressed globular, with an elliptic or subcircular perimeter, but tended to elongate in crowded
situations. Although extremely variable in small colonies, growth was inversely related to colony size and was maximum in
spring. Highest net growth rate was 211% in 11 months. No recruitment was observed in the quadrats during the study period.
Partial mortality in colonies was low and was mainly due to overgrowth by algae and to siltation. Physical disturbance by
an exceptionally severe winter storm in December 1993 caused total mortality of almost all colonies in the shallow quadrat.

Capelin is a planktivorous key fish species in many subarctic ecosystems representing the link between lower trophic levels
and apex predators. Little is known, however, of capelin in Greenland waters, but it has been suggested that size and growth
increases due to difference in food availability and temperature conditions along a 1,500 km south–north gradient on the west
coast. It is presently unknown how the qualitative state of capelin energy content is affected along this gradient. Based
on 2007 and 2008 samples, we show that energy content increases with capelin length in both spawning and non-spawning fish
and that it varies with latitude in spawning fish along West Greenland (60–71°N). Combining our results on energy content
with information on capelin growth along the same latitudinal climate gradient demonstrates that less and lower-quality food
is available to capelin predators in the south than in the north. 相似文献

An examination by protein-gel electrophoresis of 19 different geographical populations of the American oyster Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin) was conducted along the Atlantic coast and the Gulf of Mexico. Estimates were made of levels of genetic variation and similarity among the populations based on 32 structural loci. The percentage of loci polymorphic ranged from 46.9 to 65.6% along the Atlantic coast while the estimate ranged from 54.8% to 68.8% on the Gulf of Mexico. The percentage of loci heterozygous ranged from 18.6 to 23.6% along the Atlantic coast and from 20.0 to 25.4% in the Gulf of Mexico. The genetic similarities between all contiguous populations from Cape Cod, Massachusetts to Corpus Christi, Texas were estimated as 99%, while the same estimate between Corpus Christi and Brownsville, Texas was computed as 93%, indicating a major transition in genetic structure for the Brownsville population of the Laguna Madre. The study revealed that the migration of planktonic oyster larvae is predominantly in a westerly direction along the Gulf of Mexico and that gene flow appears to be disrupted in the region of the Laguna Madre. Evidence has been presented for single gene selection at the Lap-2 and Pgi loci in the form of macrogeographical clines in allele frequencies with changing environmental conditions. 相似文献

We report current genetic variation of populations of the razor shell Ensis directus (Conrad 1843) (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Pharidae) in native (North American) and introduced (European) ranges using nuclear and mitochondrial sequence-based markers. We expected less variation within the introduced range, especially considering the frequent mass mortality events observed in Europe since the species was recorded for the first time in 1978. However, we found higher variation in Europe. The possible significance of temporal fluctuations of genetic variation, limited effect of random genetic drift, and multiple introductions are discussed. Interestingly, the multiple-introduction hypothesis contrasts with the gradual colonisation of European coastal waters but is supported by trained clustering analysis and by the intensity of transatlantic shipping. Genetic and morphometric evidence strongly supports that examined individuals from a supposed E. directus population from Newfoundland (Canada) belong to a separate species. This new Ensis is formally described here and named E. terranovensis n.sp. 相似文献

We used data from various space-borne sensors to monitor the marine ecosystem in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea, at the
Costa Dorada, between the City of Barcelona and the estuary of the river Ebro. The aim of this study was to demonstrate that
the combination of different remote sensing data (acquired at different electromagnetic frequencies) allows for an improved
monitoring system, in particular for a better monitoring of the marine ecosystem and, hence, a better coastal zone management.
We present remote sensing data acquired by the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and the Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (ATSR)
aboard the Second European Remote Sensing Satellite (ERS-2), and by the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (Sea WiFS) on
the SeaStar satellite. By combining the different data we are able to overcome specific drawbacks of the single sensors, like
an insufficient temporal coverage, or a strong dependence on weather and daylight conditions.
Within the study area two main features have been selected as examples, which are well visible on many of the analysed images.
The first one exhibits a higher load of chlorophyll-a and surface-active compounds and a lower sea surface temperature (SST),
which is likely to be caused by the plume of the river Llobregat, southwest of Barcelona. It can clearly be seen from the
imagery how the river plume is driven along the coast by the local currents. The second feature can be related to cooling
water being released from a nuclear power plant and causing turbulence in the water body, which in turn gives rise to signatures
visible on the ERS-SAR imagery. 相似文献

Tropical organisms colonizing temperate environments face reduced average temperatures and dramatic thermal fluctuations. Theoretical models postulate that thermal specialization should be favored either when little environmental variation is experienced within generations or when among-generation variation is small relative to within-generation variation. To test these predictions, we studied six temperate species of damselflies differing in latitudinal distribution. We developed a computer model simulating how organisms experience environmental variation (accounting for diapause and voltinism) and performed a laboratory experiment assaying thermal sensitivities of growth rates. The computer model showed opposing latitudinal trends in among- and within-generation thermal variability: within-generation thermal variability decreased toward higher latitudes, whereas relative levels of among-generation thermal variability peaked at midlatitudes (where a shift in voltinism occurred). The growth experiment showed that low-latitude species were more thermally generalized than mid- and high-latitude species, supporting the prediction that generalists are favored under high levels of within-generation variation. Northern species had steeper, near-exponential reaction norms suggestive of thermal specialization. However, they had strikingly high thermal optima and grew very slowly over most of the thermal range they are expected to experience in the field. This observation is at present difficult to explain. These results highlight the importance of considering interactions between life history and environmental variation when deriving expectations of thermal adaptation. 相似文献

We compared populations of Laminaria hyperborea from different regions along the Norwegian coast (58–71°N). The aim of the study was to examine possible regional differences in population demography and to relate these to latitudinal gradients in ambient temperature and light. A number of population parameters were examined in understory and canopy kelp individuals. We found latitudinal differences in stipe growth rate and growth pattern, mortality, longevity, recruitment and density. Stipe growth rate was higher for young individuals in mid-Norway than in south and north Norway. Mean stipe length was related to temperature and light, and correlated significantly with indices combining temperature during the growth season and daylength in summer. Mortality decreased and longevity increased with increasing latitude, probably because of a temperature decrease with increasing latitude and a general reduction in metabolic rate. Greater longevity may also cause the observed decrease in recruitment rate with increasing latitude, since there are fewer opportunities for understory individuals to replace dead canopy individuals. The development of particularly large kelp in mid-Norway appears to be explained by high growth rates and not a particularly long life span, as earlier assumed. This has consequences for decisions of the optimal harvesting regime for the species in the region, with regard to yield and maintenance of associated biodiversity.Communicated by M. The species composition of the benthic-slope fish fauna of the Middle Atlantic Bight is described from trawl catches taken from a depth of about 900 m in August, 1969. Two species associations and an intermediate area are apparent. The difference between the two associations is partially attributable to differences in species composition, but primarily to a difference in species dominance. The small number of samples precludes geographic and bathymetric delineation of these associations, as well as conclusions about their temporal stability. Diversity values appear to be relatively high for the benthic fishes of the upper slope, but comparison with values for temperate estuaries and coastal fishes indicates a narrow range for all of these habitats, and considerable overlap in values from the different environments. Environmental stability may be of less importance in determining the diversity of fish faunas than of benthic invertebrate faunas because of the mobility of fishes and ontogenetic changes in their habitat preference. 相似文献

Population differentiation of the Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis) in the western North Atlantic, including the Gulf of Mexico 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:2
Information about the genetic population structure of the Atlantic spotted dolphin [Stenella frontalis (G. Cuvier 1829)] in the western North Atlantic would greatly improve conservation and management of this species in USA
waters. To this end, mitochondrial control region sequences and five nuclear microsatellite loci were used to test for genetic
differentiation of Atlantic spotted dolphins in the western North Atlantic, including the Gulf of Mexico (n=199). Skin tissue samples were collected from 1994–2000. Significant heterozygote deficiencies in three microsatellite loci
within samples collected off the eastern USA coast prompted investigation of a possible Wahlund effect, resulting in evidence
for previously unsuspected population subdivision in this region. In subsequent analyses including three putative populations,
two in the western North Atlantic (n=38, n=85) and one in the Gulf of Mexico (n=76), significant genetic differentiation was detected for both nuclear DNA (R
ST=0.096, P≤0.0001) and mitochondrial DNA (Φ
ST=0.215, P≤0.0001), as well as for all pair-wise population comparisons for both markers. This genetic evidence for population differentiation
coupled to known biogeographic transition zones at Cape Hatteras, North Carolina and Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA, evidence
of female philopatry, and preliminary support for significant genetic differences between previously documented morphotypes
of Atlantic spotted dolphins in coastal and offshore waters all indicate that the biology and life history of this species
is more complex than previously assumed. Assumptions of large, panmictic populations might not be accurate in other areas
where S. frontalis is continuously distributed (e.g., eastern Atlantic), and could have a detrimental effect on long-term viability and maintenance
of genetic diversity in this species in regions where incidental human-induced mortality occurs.

The nurse shark, Ginglymostoma cirratum, inhabits shallow, tropical, and subtropical waters in the Atlantic and the eastern Pacific. Unlike many other species of
sharks, nurse sharks are remarkably sedentary. We assayed the mitochondrial control region and eight microsatellite loci from
individuals collected primarily in the western Atlantic to estimate the degree of population subdivision. Two individuals
from the eastern Atlantic and one from the Pacific coast of Panama also were genotyped. Overall, the mtDNA haplotype (h = 48 ± 5%) and nucleotide (π = 0.08 ± 0.06%) diversities were low. The microsatellite data mirror the mitochondrial results
with the average number of alleles ([`(N)]A \bar{N}_{A} = 9) and observed heterozygosity ([`(H)]O \bar{H}_{O} = 0.58) both low. The low levels of diversity seen in both the mtDNA and the microsatellite may be due to historical sea
level fluctuations and concomitant loss of shallow water habitat. Eight of the 10 pair-wise western Atlantic F
ST estimates for mtDNA indicated significant genetic subdivision. Pair-wise F
ST values for the microsatellite loci indicated a similar pattern as the mtDNA. The western Atlantic population of nurse sharks
is genetically subdivided with the strongest separation seen between the offshore islands and mainland Brazil, likely due
to deep water acting as a barrier to dispersal. The eastern and western Atlantic populations were closely related. The eastern
Pacific individual is quite different from Atlantic individuals and may be a cryptic, sister species. 相似文献

Evidence of segregation in foraging habitat has been demonstrated in some top marine predators, including cetaceans, pinnipeds and seabirds. However, most data are not adequate to assess differences relating to body size or seasonal influences. This has implications for quantitative modelling of population-level predator–prey interactions and ecosystem structure. We examined potential influence of body size and ‘fatness’ on the foraging trip characteristics of a top marine predator, the Atlantic grey seal (Halichoerus grypus), in southwest Ireland within the framework of optimal foraging theory to examine how female grey seals foraging behaviour varied with size, and across the period between moult and breeding. Larger seals undertook trips of greater duration and travelled further from haul-out sites than smaller seals. However, body fat was negatively associated with trip duration and extent. Seals spent more time at sea during the summer, but trips were shorter in extent, suggesting more localized foraging during this season. 相似文献

Several studies on the presence and ecology of various Vibrio sp have been reported in coastal and estuarine waters throughout the world, but there is trifling information available on the distribution of this organism of colossal pathogenic potential in the fresh water riverine environment. Thus, we conducted a multiyearenvironmental study to scrutinize the occurrence of members of genus Vibrio in the largest west flowing river of the Indian subcontinent, which is also the largest river of central India, the Narmada. Statistical analysis was done to reveal major environmental factors controlling the presence of Vibrio sp in the river Narmada. Monthly field samplings were conducted between January 2002 and December 2003 at four different sites in Jabalpur (MP), India. At each site, water samples were taken and physicochemical and bacteriological parameters were measured. The identity of the isolates was confirmed by employing 16S rRNA analysis. The organisms were found to be widely distributed in the river with regular seasonal variations. The density of Vibrio was found to be correlated with temperature, coliforms and other heterotrophic bacteria. Water temperature accounted for most of the variability in the concentration of Vibrio spAs typical fecal pollution indicators may not access public health risk from potential pathogens such as vibrios, hence special monitoring programme for vibrios may adequately be included in the water quality management. 相似文献

Phylogeographic patterns in Uca annulipes sampled from 30 locations across an East African latitudinal gradient were investigated using mitochondrial DNA cytochrome
oxidase I sequences and analysed together with patterns of morphometric differentiation. Four hundred and four specimens along
the east African coast were sampled, and 18 haplotypes were encountered. Haplotype and nucleotide diversity values were very
low and the phylogenetic analysis did not reveal any clear phylogeographic structure. Furthermore, the analysis of molecular
variance and pairwise Φ
ST values showed no significant spatial population differentiation. Mismatch analyses and tests of neutrality supported the
hypothesis that this species has undergone a fairly recent demographic expansion. Our results, therefore, failed to demonstrate
significant geographical structure in the pattern of genetic variation, indicating that populations of U. annulipes are capable of extensive gene flow among mangroves along the coast. The genetic structure of this species could be panmictic
due to a high amount of gene flow along the geographical gradient in study during the planktonic larval phase, when larvae
are carried along stream by the dominant currents. Moreover, the morphometric analysis performed did not reveal differences
of shape differentiation according to a geographical pattern, although significant differences among the sampling areas were
found. 相似文献

The tanaidacean Hargeria rapax (Harger, 1879) was sampled along intertidal transects semi-monthly at one site and quarterly at two other sites in salt marshes on Sapelo Island, Georgia, USA, from July 1985 to July 1986. Tanaids were most abundant near the mean highwater line and became progressively less abundant at lower intertidal elevations. Population density was greatest in the winter (December to February) when there were >29 000 individuals/m2 at one high intertidal station. Although reproductive individuals were present most of the year, peaks in reproductive activity occurred in autumn (late August to early November) and spring (early March to mid June). An increase in population density coincided with increased reproductive activity only in autumn. Tanaid cohorts produced in the spring and summer rarely survived beyond 6 to 8 wk, but those produced in the autumn overwintered and lived 22 to 26 wk. The sex ratio among mature individuals was 2.8:1 (females: males). Mature females ranged in size from 2.2 to 3.9 mm total length (TL) and mature males were 2.3 to 4.1 mm TL; there was no significant sexual difference (Student's t-test, P>0.05) in the mean TL of mature individuals. The mean (±SD) size of brooding females was 2.9±0.32 mm TL and the mean (±SD) nunber of offspring/brood was 8.3±4.99 young/female. The timing of tanaid reproduction together with the effects of predation by juvenile fish and crustaceans may account for most of the spatial and temporal patterns of tanaid abundance observed in this study. There was a significant linear relationship (P<0.001, r
2=0.54) between the growth rate (GR, mm/d) of individuals and average daily air temperature (°C) described by the equation: GR=0.00178 (°C)-0.00971. The potential annual contribution of tanaid production to higher trophic levels, estimated from knowledge of standing stocks, growth rates and fecundity, was 5.71, 0.91 and 0.46 g dry wt/m2 for high, mid and low intertidal areas, respectively. The high intertidal marsh, which supports the largest and most persistent standing stock of H. rapax, provides a rich foraging area for aquatic predators at high tide and an important source of recruits from which tanaid populations at lower intertidal elevations are recolonized after periods of intense predation pressure. 相似文献

Invasive plants may have variable effects within a given environment depending on their interactions with the dominant native species, yet little research has examined such species-species interactions within a site. Savanna trees with nonoverlapping canopies offer an ideal opportunity to assess associated changes in the ecosystem processes that result from interactions between an invasive species and different native tree species. We examined the influence of the exotic invasive shrub Lonicera maackii on decomposition dynamics under three native tree species: Fraxinus quadrangulata, Quercus muehlenbergii, and Carya ovata. Litter decomposition rates and litter C and N were evaluated over two years using single- and mixed-species litterbags (L. maackii and individual tree species litter); microarthropod abundance was measured at 6 weeks using Tulgren funnels. Litter from the invasive L. maackii decomposed and lost N more rapidly than the litter of the three native tree species. The rate at which L. maackii decomposed depended on its location, with L. maackii litter decomposing and losing N more rapidly under C. ovata than under the other two native tree species. Mixing L. maackii with the native species' litter did not accelerate litter mass loss overall but did result in synergistic N losses at variable times throughout the experiment, further highlighting the variable interaction between native species and L. maackii. Nitrogen loss was significantly higher than expected in mixtures of C. ovata + L. maackii litter at 6 weeks, in F. quadrangulata + L. maackii litter at 12 weeks, and in Q. muehlenbergii + L. maackii litter at 24 weeks. If the effects of invasive species on certain ecosystem processes, such as litter decomposition, are strongly influenced by their association with native species, this could suggest the need for a more nuanced understanding of the vulnerability of ecosystem processes to invasions of L. maackii and potentially other invasive species. 相似文献

The loliginid squids Loligo pealei LeSueur and L. plei Blaineville (both recently proposed for reclassification as Doryteuthis) are commercially important, similar in appearance, and sympatric throughout much of the northwestern Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea. To investigate possible cryptic speciation and population structure, we examined samples (collected from 1995 to 1997) of both species for restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) in PCR products of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase (subunit I). RFLP haplotypes were further characterized by direct sequencing. In North American waters, cryptic speciation was rejected by the far greater nucleotide sequence divergence between species (~14%) versus within species (<1%). Each species displayed about a dozen RFLP haplotypes, but only three of their respective haplotypes were found among 90% of L. pealei specimens (n=356) and 97% of L. plei specimens (n=431). For L. pealei, a genetic break existed between the northern Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean; among sample units within each population, gene flow was consistent with panmixia. The phylogeography of L. pealei is likely a consequence of the eastward currents of the Florida Straits, the elevated temperatures of those surface waters, and the restriction of this species to the continental shelf. For L. plei, a genetic break existed between longitudes 88°W and 89°W, with the northwestern Gulf of Mexico and the northeastern Gulf-Atlantic Ocean comprising separate populations; among sample units within each population, gene flow fit an isolation-by-distance model. If the genetic break found for L. plei represents resident populations separated by nearshore physical parameters (e.g. effects of the Mississippi River and the sediment boundary at longitude 88°W), the lack of structure within the Gulf for L. pealei might be due to its distribution farther from shore. However, the two populations of L. plei probably represent annual recolonization from the southwestern Gulf of Mexico and from the eastern Caribbean Sea, whereas the populations of L. pealei probably are permanent residents within their respective regions. 相似文献
