This article highlights recent research on the beneficial use of selected low frequency electromagnetic fields (EMF) as a
safe alternative therapy for treatment of cancer and other health problems. It is shown that EMF therapy provides a safe alternative
and adjunct modality for the treatment of cancer and other health problems, and therefore, research in this field deserves
more support. The paper also discusses some reports and hypothesis of potential risk of human exposure to low frequency EMF,

Over the last years, a wide debate has developed on the possible health effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields. In-depth
research activity was therefore developed by the international scientific community aimed at evaluating the risk associated
with exposure to this type of radiation. At the same time, various international institutions began to issue recommendations
on exposure limits valid for workers and for the population in the frequency range up to 300 GHz. Most of the recently revised
safety standards worldwide are set in terms of internal rates of electromagnetic energy deposition (Specific Absorption Rate)
at radiofrequency and microwave frequencies, and of induced electric fields or current densities at lower frequencies up to
10 MHz. At the international level, the most authoritative guidelines have been developed by the International Commission
on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP); another internationally well recognized standard is that developed by the Institute
of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in the USA, adopting the same basic approach of ICNIRP, although with some
differences in numerical values.
This article is mainly focused on the analysis of different approaches for the protection against electromagnetic fields,

The possible mechanisms of interactions of electromagnetic fields (EMF) with biological systems are often discussed in bioelectromagnetics
in light of thermal versus nonthermal mechanisms. This paper attempts to show the principle difference between the biophysical
and engineering approaches to biological mechanisms of EMF initiated bioeffects. While biophysical approach is based on experimentally
obtained data on biological responses to the applied EMF, the engineering approach strongly relies on specific absorption
rate (SAR) value. With experimental data, comparing effects of low- and high-frequency electromagnetic fields, discussing
modulation of radiofrequency (RF) signals, the author demonstrates the superiority of the nonthermal approach. Biological
windows, resonance mechanism, and various reported biological effects of geomagnetic fields are also in favor of the nonthermal
mechanisms. Finally, one potential nonthermal mechanism involving the role of calmodulin in cellular functions is shown in

A hypothesis is proposed how Low Frequency Electromagnetic Field (LF EMF) exposure can stimulate an immune response, based
on recent insights in immunology. We hypothesize that the Immunent EMF treatment induces mild stress to cells, which then
produce cytokines that function as alarms or so called danger signals for the immune system. In this way EMF treatment takes
the place of multiplying pathogens, and the damage these cause, in the triggering of an immune response. In a first series
of experiments in␣vitro common carp head kidney-derived phagocytes were used to determine ROS production as a measure for
immune activation. Exposure to LF EMF signals (200–5,000 Hz) at 5 μT or 1.5 mT led to 42 or 33% increase in immune activity,
respectively, compared to negative control values. EMF could also additionally stimulate chemically pre-stimulated samples
up to 18% (5 μT) or 22% (1.5 mT). Significance of increase in ROS production in the total series was: p < 0.0001. In a second series of experiments in␣vitro commercial goldfish were used. Groups of fish were housed under equal
conditions in at least four control tanks and 8–16 EMF-exposed tanks. Exposure was done with a predominantly vertical field
at field strengths (rms) between 0.15 and 50 μT. Without treatment mortality was about 50% after 18 days, while the treatment
at 5 μT reduced it to 20% on average. At field strengths 0.15, 0.5, 1.5, 5, 15 and 50 μT an equally strong effect was found.
Reducing the field strength to 0.05, 0.06, 0.01 and 0.003 μT showed a gradually decreasing effect, which only at 0.003 μT
is no longer statistically significant. Finally, in␣vitro experiments were done with 560 commercial broiler chickens exposed
to infection pressure from coccidiosis. EMF exposure at 6.5 μT reduced intestinal lesions by 40% and improved feed conversion

In our paper we studied the effects of exposure to ELF (extremely low frequency) or musically generated TAMMEF (therapeutic
application of musically modulated electromagnetic fields) electromagnetic fields on the tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α)
release induced by a lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from cultured human lymphomonocytes of peripheral blood. Lymphomonocytes, isolated
from blood donors buffy-coat, were prepared using standard techniques in cell culture flasks, kept in CO2 incubator, with controlled temperature and humidity for 5 days. Flasks were subjected to an ELF electromagnetic field (100 Hz
sinusoidal) or to TAMMEF electromagnetic fields (with intensity, frequency, and wave shape randomly modified in time, so that
all possible codes can occur during a single application). The TNF-α release was determined by ELISA test every 24 h for 92 h
and the results were evaluated by a non-parametric test. LPS induces a stronger TNF-α release in cultures that were subjected
to ELF when compared with cultures subjected to TAMMEF, at each time period of the experimental protocol. These results seem
to indicate that TAMMEF is able to induce a complex modulation of LPS-induced TNF-α release, a cytokine with pro inflammatory
property whose release during chronic or neoplastic inflammatory diseases has strong negative effects on several organ systems. 相似文献

In the recent years concerns whether exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) from base station antennae can cause adverse
health effects are grown. Great attention is paid on risk of EMF exposure to people living in a close proximity of base stations.
In this issue, a point of interest is the personnel mounting, adjusting and maintaining base stations. Their working tasks
require stay in high EMF levels’ conditions. There are only few studies concerning this specific occupational group. The results
from our previous investigation (Zaryabova and Israel 2006) show that in␣many cases on performing some specific tasks operators
are overexposed according to our national legislation, and ICNIRP guidelines. Here, we present an extended study covering
more base stations and more precise scenario for performed tasks and working positions. Results of exposure assessment are
presented. They include energetic load calculations on the basis of Bulgarian national legislation, and the corresponding
SAR values. Data are used to determine permissible time duration for each particular work operation and served as a base for
limiting the exposure and proposal for protective measures for the personnel. 相似文献

During the last three decades the interest toward clinical application of magnetic and electromagnetic stimulation increased
worldwide. Numerous publications have discussed the possibility of exogenous magnetic fields to initiate beneficial effects
on various biological processes, which are of critical importance for healing of different injuries and pathologies. Today,
magnetic and electromagnetic fields are increasingly utilized for the treatment of numerous musculoskeletal injuries and pathologies.
For example, selected magnetic fields were reported to be beneficial in the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and post-surgical,
post traumatic and chronic wounds, reduction of edema, in the acceleration of pain and stress relief, and thus contribute
to healing processes. The application of this modality could be facilitated by establishing the exact dosimetry of application
and by searching for biophysical mechanisms of action, as well. It should be remembered that “not all magnets are equal”,
therefore the specific medical problem requires a proper diagnostics, a selection of the magnetic field to be applied and
a design of the appropriate protocol for treatment. The paper advised that every study and report should carefully explain
both the medical problem and the parameters of the applied magnetic field and cautions against generalized statements like

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative condition involving the joints caused by metabolic changes in chondrocytes metabolism.
Treatment with magnetic fields (EMFs) produces benefits to patients affected by this pathology. The present research has the
aim to investigate, by a proteomic approach, the effect of magnetic fields on cultured chondrocytes, because EMFs interferes
greatly with OA chondrocytes metabolism. Human osteoarthritic chondrocytes were obtained from the femur head of osteoarthritis
adult patients and were cultured under standard conditions and exposed for precise times both to extremely low-frequency (ELF;
100-Hz) electromagnetic fields and to the Therapeutic Application of Musically Modulated Electromagnetic Fields (TAMMEF),
which are characterized by variable frequencies, intensities, and wave shapes. We tested the effects of the different exposure
by 2-DE analysis and demonstrated that chondrocytes metabolism was highly influenced by the treatment with EMFs; in fact many

Numerous studies have demonstrated the utility of extremely low frequencies (ELF) electromagnetic fields in the treatment
of pain. Moreover, the effects of these fields seems to depend on their respective codes. In our study we want to value the
effects and the safety of the TAMMEF (Therapeutic Application of a Musically Modulated Electromagnetic Field) system, which
field is piloted by a musical signal and its parameters are modified in time, randomly varying within the respective ranges,
so that all possible codes can occur during a single application. Ninety subjects, affected by chronic low back pain, were
enrolled in the study and randomly divided into three groups of 30 patients each: A exposed to TAMMEF, B exposed to ELF, C
exposed to a simulated field. All subjects underwent a cycle of 15 daily sessions of 30 minutes each and a clinical examination
upon enrolment, after 7 days of therapy, at the end of the cycle and at a follow-up 30 days later. All the patients of groups
A and B completed the therapy without the appearance of side effects: they presented a significant improvement of the subjective
pain and the functional limitation, which remained stable at the follow-up examination. In group C, there was no improvement
of the pain symptoms or articular functionality. This study suggests that the TAMMEF system is efficacious and safe in the

Potential use of reservoirs and flooded fields stocked with aquatic plants for reduction of the nutrient levels of organic soil drainage water was evaluated. The treatment systems include 1) a large single reservoir (R1) stocked with waterhyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), elodea (Egeria densa), and cattails (Typha sp.) in series; 2) three small reservoirs in series with waterhyacinth (R2), elodea (R3), and cattails (R4), grown in independent reservoirs; 3) a control reservoir (R5) with no cultivated plants; 4) a large single flooded field planted to cattails; 5) three small flooded fields in a series planted to cattails; and 6) a flooded field with no cultivated plants. Drainage water was pumped daily (6 hours a day, and 6 days a week) into these systems for a period of 27 months at predetermined constant flow rates. Water samples were collected at the inlet and outlet of each treatment system and analyzed for N and P forms.The series of reservoirs stocked with aquatic plants functioned effectively in the removal of N and P from agricultural drainage water, compared to a single large reservoir. Allowing the water to flow through the reservoir stocked with waterhyacinth plants with a residence time of 3.6 days was adequate to remove about 50% of the incoming inorganic N. Allowing the water to flow through a series of two small reservoirs, R2 and R3, with a residence time of 7.3 days was necessary to remove about 60% of the incoming ortho-P. The importance of the assessment of the electromagnetic fields /EMF/ background as a health risk factor for the physiotherapy
personnel is discussed in this paper. Wide frequency and amplitude ranges as well as large variety of design prescribed in
the rehabilitation program form complicated work conditions. In this paper, we attempt to present and classify this specific
work environment, i.e., low intensive EMF background with non homogenous frequency and modulation characteristics, stochastic
changes running during day, ground or even underground units’ placement and professional specifics, i.e., chronic EMF expositions,
personnel’s trunk and hands exposure, dose-measurement absence, lack of program for prevention and prophylaxis for the assessment
of the relatively insufficiently elucidated potential of EMF as a harmful factor for medical staff. Our “Study of the biological
effects of the EMF among medical staff from PRM wards—potential of risk reduction”/initialized in 1999/and the original survey
card structure are presented in general here first. It has been shown the importance to extend the “native” studies among
homogenous professional groups, two of them presented there, as well as the study of the biological effects of EMF in their
different aspects, especially taking into account the elevated levels of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation in the environment.
This includes the special attention on the exposure of medical staff from PRM units and creation of adequate methods for prevention

This paper describes tools developed through a community consultative process to help decision makers manage electrical and magnetic fields (EMF) health risk. The process involved in‐depth interviews with experts (N=12) and focus group discussions with seven different stakeholder groups. The results reveal commonly held intense public concerns about the long‐term health effects of EMF. These concerns were further reinforced by the lack of public trust in both government and industry with regards to EMF risk management. Overall, the participants wanted tools that can be used to manage EMF information, scientific uncertainty about EMF and the complex environment in which EMF issues are embedded. The findings contributed to a mapping out of response formats to address public concerns related to risk, hazard, trust, accountability and fairness across a range of stakeholder groups. These tools and their roles in the management of complex and variable risks, involving new circumstances (e.g. privatization) and information (e.g. new scientific studies) are presented. The importance of recognizing and working with uncertainty through adaptive management strategies, using qualitative approaches, is also discussed. 相似文献

Sixty subjects, affected by shoulder periarthritis were enrolled in the study and randomly divided into three groups of 20
patients each: the first exposed to TAMMEF, the second exposed to ELF, the third exposed to a simulated field. All subjects
underwent a cycle of 15 daily sessions of 30 min each and a clinical examination upon enrolment, after 7 days of therapy,
at the end of the cycle and at a follow-up 30 days later. All the patients of TAMMEF group and ELF group completed the therapy
without the appearance of side effects: they presented a significant improvement of the subjective pain and the functional
limitation, which remained stable at the follow-up examination. In those exposed to a simulated field group, there was no
improvement of the pain symptoms or articular functionality. This study suggests that the TAMMEF system is efficacious and
safe in the control of pain symptoms and in the reduction of functional limitation in patients with shoulder periarthritis.
Moreover, the effects of the TAMMEF system cover those produced by the ELF field. 相似文献

China is the largest rice producing and consuming country in the world, but rice production has given way to the production of vegetables during the past twenty years. The government has been trying to stop this land-use conversion and increase the area in rice-vegetable rotation. Important questions that must be answered to determine what strategy is best for society are, “What is the reason behind this conversion?”; “Which system is more productive and which is more sustainable?”; and “How can economic policy be used to adjust the pattern of farmland use to attain sustainable development?” To answer these questions, a combined evaluation of these agricultural production systems was done using emergy, energy and economic methods. An economic analysis clearly showed that the reason for this conversion was simply that the economic output/input ratio and the benefit density of the vegetable production system were greater than that of rice. However, both energy and emergy evaluations showed that long-term rice was the best choice for sustainable development, followed by rotation systems. The current price of rice is lower than the em-value of rice produced from the long-term rice system, but higher than that of rice produced from the rotation system. Scenario analysis showed that if the government increases the price of rice to the em-value of rice produced from the long-term rice system, US$0.4/kg, and takes the value of soil organic matter into account, the economic output/input ratios of both the rice and rotation systems will be higher than that of the vegetable system. The three methods, energy, emergy and economics, are different but complementary, each revealing a different aspect of the same system. Their combined use shows not only the reasons behind a system’s current state or condition, but also the way to adjust these systems to move toward more sustainable states. 相似文献

Floods and droughts are natural phenomena for which the risks of occurrence are likely to continue to grow. Increasing levels of exposure and insufficient adaptive capacity are among the factors responsible for the rising vulnerability. The former is conditioned by anthropopressure (e.g., economic development of flood–prone areas) and adverse effects of climate change; scenarios for future climates indicate the possibility of amplified water–related extremes. This article presents the current situation of coping with extreme hydrological events within the pressure–state–response framework. Among promising response strategies, the role of forecast and warning, and of watershed management are reviewed. Sample success stories and lessons learnt related to hydrological extremes are given and policy implications discussed. 相似文献

This paper considers the use of economic analysis in nature conservation within the Nature Conservancy Council (NCC). The development of official nature conservation in Britain and the relationship to land use changes is described, and the focus on site safeguard illustrated by declines in distributions and viability of populations of some species. A restatement of nature conservation objectives is proposed and the role of economic analysis in developing policies to secure these described. The use of economics by the NCC and the lessons learned from this are outlined. The implication of the commitment to sustainability is then discussed and concerns over how environmental valuation is used in light of this described. The paper concludes that economic analysis is a powerful tool for integrating nature conservation into wider rural policies and for the development of measures to secure contributions by other interests to meeting nature conservation objectives. 相似文献

In this study, an option pricing model and a dynamic programming model are developed. These models contribute to the improvement of the decision making process in two respects. First, these models allow for the own growth rate of mining costs to be incorporated into the analysis. Second, these models are developed to estimate the satisfactory gross revenue for investing, so that these models are helpful in analyzing multi-metal mines.The two models are applied to estimate the satisfactory revenue for investing in the Carlin east gold mine, Nevada, USA. The satisfactory revenue estimated by the option pricing model is found to be $42.2M, while that estimated by the dynamic programming model is found to be $44.4M. Since the revenue calculated on the basis of the current conditions is $36M, then the decision by option pricing and dynamic programming is to wait and not to invest now. Despite the difference between the two models in estimating and applying the discount rate, the two models generate the same decision. 相似文献

This study examined the effectiveness of a Global Positioning System (GPS)-based mobile navigation system in comparison to paper maps and direct experience of routes, by focusing on the user's wayfinding behavior and acquired spatial knowledge. Based on information received from one of these three media, participants walked six routes finding the way to goals. Results showed that GPS users traveled longer distances and made more stops during the walk than map users and direct-experience participants. Also, GPS users traveled more slowly, made larger direction errors, drew sketch maps with poorer topological accuracy, and rated wayfinding tasks as more difficult than direct-experience participants. Characteristics of navigation with these three learning media and possible reasons for the ineffectiveness of the GPS-based navigation system are discussed. 相似文献
