The massive oil discharge in the Saudi Arabian coast at the end of the 1991 Gulf War is used here as a natural experiment to study the ability of microbial mats to transform oil residues after major spills. The degree of oil transformation has been evaluated from the analysis of the aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons by gas chromatography (GC) and GC coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The oil-polluted microbial mat samples from coastal environments exhibited an intermediate degree of transformation between that observed in superficial and deep sediments. Evaporation, photo-oxidation and water-washing seemed to lead to more effective and rapid elimination of hydrocarbons than cyanobacteria and its associated microorganisms. Furthermore, comparison of some compounds (e.g. regular isoprenoid hydrocarbons or alkylnaphthalenes) in the oil collected in the area after the spill or in the mixtures retained by cyanobacterial growth gave rise to an apparent effect of hydrocarbon preservation in the microbial mat ecosystems.  相似文献

The increasing production and use of plastic in the Arabian Gulf combined with shipping and waste disposal practices, have increased the concentration of plastic particles on the sea's surface and beaches. The objective of this investigation was to provide an assessment of the abundance, distribution, potential sources and significance of industrial plastic on the western beaches of the United Arab Emirates on the Arabian Gulf and on the eastern beaches on the Gulf of Oman. The abundance of stranded plastic pellets was highly uneven. By early 1992 alarming levels of fresh plastic pellets were noticed on the Arabian Gulf beaches of the UAE. Large numbers of 25 kg sacks of white plastic spherules manufactured by (SABIC) in Jubail, Saudi Arabia were washed ashore. When compared to the west coast on the Arabian Gulf, the east coast on the Gulf of Oman exhibited much lower levels of plastic pellets. When compared to other parts of the world, the beaches of the UAE on the Arabian Gulf are considered to be heavily polluted with industrial plastic.  相似文献

Background, aim, and scope

Due to the active production and transport of crude oil in the Arabian Gulf region, the Arabian Gulf coasts are routinely polluted with oil. Therefore, such coasts have been subject of studies aiming at assessing the roles of indigenous microbial consortia in cleaning these environments. In the present study, epilithic microbial communities along Kuwait coasts were studied for their oil degradation potential.  相似文献

Most of the shores in Qatar and other oil producing countries have had a long history of crude oil pollution from different sources. This pilot study was to assess the problem and suggest a management programme for disposing of the collected tar or lessening the impact of tar accumulation. The vegetation on the sites used for dumping tar was used in a field survey to identify bioindicators of tar pollution and of the natural recovery of polluted sites. The phytomonitoring results indicate that recovery of polluted sites can be quite rapid after clean-up and restoration. To facilitate natural plant invasion and colonization, and the restoration of tar piles, the dumping sites must have plant communities with high species diversity and a high percentage of annual plants. Depending on the sand-tar ratio in the piles, artificial seeding of selected plant species (listed) can be applied by using species mixes or single species seeding. Management techniques are suggested to optimize the natural recovery and revegetation of tar-affected coastal marshes.  相似文献

A large-scale assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from the 1991 Gulf War oil spill was performed for 2002-2003 sediment samples (n = 1679) collected from habitats along the shoreline of Saudi Arabia. Benthic sediment toxicity was characterized using the Equilibrium Partitioning Sediment Benchmark Toxic Unit approach for 43 PAHs (ESBTUFCV,43). Samples were assigned to risk categories according to ESBTUFCV,43 values: no-risk (≤1), low (>1-≤2), low-medium (>2-≤3), medium (>3-≤5) and high-risk (>5). Sixty seven percent of samples had ESBTUFCV,43 > 1 indicating potential adverse ecological effects. Sediments from the 0-30 cm layer from tidal flats, and the >30-<60 cm layer from heavily oiled halophytes and mangroves had high frequency of high-risk samples. No-risk samples were characterized by chrysene enrichment and depletion of lighter molecular weight PAHs, while high-risk samples showed little oil weathering and PAH patterns similar to 1993 samples. North of Safaniya sediments were not likely to pose adverse ecological effects contrary to sediments south of Tanaqib. Landscape and geomorphology has played a role on the distribution and persistence in sediments of oil from the Gulf War.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate bioaccumulation of nickel (Ni) and vanadium (V) in clams living in different salinity regimes along the Saudi coast of the Arabian Gulf. Several hundred clam (Meretrix meretrix), sediment, and seawater samples were collected from 12 locations. Concentrations of Ni and V were determined in these samples using an inductively coupled argon plasma analyzer. Concentrations of Ni and V in the clams varied between 0.35 and 2.61 mg kg(-1) and between 0.13 and 0.35 mg kg(-1) wet tissue, respectively. Analysis of variance of the data revealed significant (P<0.01) inter- and intra-station variations in Ni concentrations in clams. In contrast, the mean concentration of V in clams from all the stations were statistically similar. Correlation between the biometric characteristics of clams and Ni and V concentrations were not statistically significant. Significant (P<0.05) geographical variations in Ni and V concentrations in the sediment samples were found, with relatively higher concentrations in the northern part of the Gulf where there are many oil fields. Ni and V in the sediments were significantly (P<0.05) correlated, suggesting a common contamination source for these elements. Interactions between Ni and V in clams and sediment were poor.  相似文献

Inorganic particulate matter was sampled weekly during the period, from March to August of 1996 at eight different sites on Muharraq Island at height of ∼8 m above the ground level. Muharraq is the second most populated of the islands in the country (after the Bahrain island), but in terms of population per square kilometer, it is the most densely populated. Deposited aerosols were chemically analysed by ion chromatography and a comparison was made between these sites. The results were in good correlation with the meteorological and surface features of Bahrain.  相似文献

Using the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico as an impetus, we explored the potential for TiO2-mediated photocatalytic reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation to increase the bioavailability (solubility) and biodegradability of weathered oil after a spill. Food grade TiO2, which is FDA approved for use as food additive in the United States, was tested as a photocatalyst for this novel application. Photocatalytic pre-treatment (0.05 wt.% TiO2, UV irradiation 18 W m?2, 350–400 nm) for 24 h in a bench top photoreactor increased the soluble organic carbon content of weathered oil by 60%, and enhanced its subsequent biodegradation (measured as O2 consumption in a respirometer) by 37%. Photocatalytic pre-treatment was also tested outdoors under sunlight illumination, but no significant increase in solubility or biodegradation was observed after 11 d of exposure. Although sunlight irradiation of food-grade TiO2 generated ROS (assessed by the degradation of 4-chlorophenol as a probe compound), the efficacy of weathered oil pre-treatment was apparently hindered by sinking of the photocatalysts under quiescent conditions and illumination occlusion by the oil. Overall, results indicate that photocatalytic pre-treatment to stimulate bioremediation of weathered oil deserves further consideration, but controlling the buoyancy and surface hydrophobicity of the photocatalysts will be important for future efforts to enable ROS generation in proximity to the target compounds.  相似文献

Measurements of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) concentrations in 77 core samples collected in 1992 from the bottom sediments of the Arabian Gulf were used to delineate oil pollution levels and their distribution in the region. Seven chronic moderately (TPH 50-89 microg g(-1)) and heavily (TPH 266-1448 microg g(-1)) polluted areas were identified; three in the northern part of the region and four in the southern part. Oil pollution in these areas was attributed to natural oil seepage, accidental damage to pipelines, accidental spillage from tankers, the Nowruz oil slick, and tanker deballasting. Present-day intermediate (TPH 50-114 microg g(-1)) and high (TPH 200-1122 microg g(-1)) pollution levels were identified in 10 areas. Of these, three polluted areas in the northeastern corner, offshore Saudi Arabia and offshore Bahrain, Qatar and United Arab Emirates are probably directly affected by the Kuwait oil slick. A new scenario is suggested for the movement and fate of the oil slick, in which additional large oil discharges from northern sources, as well as substantial quantities of eroded oiled sediments and oil floating from heavily impacted tidal flats along the Saudi Arabian coastline, serve as sources of oil pollution. A definite relationship exists between the grain-size distribution and the TPH content of bottom sediments, with the highest TPH concentrations in the muddy sediments, suggesting that adsorption onto muds is the primary mechanism of oil pollutant accumulation in the Arabian Gulf. Total organic carbon measurements do not correlate positively with the grain-size distribution and TPH contents of the sediments, and hence cannot be used as indicators for petroleum hydrocarbon pollution in the Arabian Gulf.  相似文献

An oil spill occurred off Goa, west coast of India, on 23 March 2005 due to collision of two vessels. In general, fair weather with weak winds prevails along the west coast of India during March. In that case, the spill would have moved slowly and reached the coast. However, in 2005 when this event occurred, relatively stronger winds prevailed, and these winds forced the spill to move away from the coast. The spill trajectory was dominated by winds rather than currents. The MIKE21 Spill Analysis model was used to simulate the spill trajectory. The observed spill trajectory and the slick area were in agreement with the model simulations. The present study illustrates the importance of having pre-validated trajectories of spill scenarios for selecting eco-sensitive regions for preparedness and planning suitable response strategies whenever spill episodes occur.  相似文献

In the present study, cadmium and lead concentrations were compared in barnacles, ghost shrimps, polychaetes, bivalves, and sediment from ten different locations along the intertidal zone of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. The results revealed significant differences in the heavy metal concentrations between the organisms with barnacles showing, by far, the highest metal concentrations. The bioaccumulation factor of Cd in different animals follows this pattern with barnacles?>?bivalves?>?polychaetes?>?ghost shrimps, while the pattern for Pb was barnacles?>?polychaetes?>?bivalves?>?ghost shrimps. In most of the stations, sediments showed the lowest lead and cadmium concentrations. Therefore, it is concluded that barnacles with Pb concentrations between 0.17 and 2,016.1 μg/g and Cd concentrations ranging from 0.4 to 147.1 μg/g are the best organisms to be employed in monitoring programs designed to assess pollution with bioavailable metals in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.  相似文献

This study investigated potential nitrogen fixation, net nitrification, and denitrification responses to short-term crude oil exposure that simulated oil exposure in Juncus roemerianus salt marsh sediments previously impacted following the Deepwater Horizon accident. Temperature as well as crude oil amount and type affected the nitrogen cycling rates. Total nitrogen fixation rates increased 44 and 194 % at 30 °C in 4,000 mg kg?1 tar ball and 10,000 mg kg?1 moderately weathered crude oil treatments, respectively; however, there was no difference from the controls at 10 and 20 °C. Net nitrification rates showed production at 20 °C and consumption at 10 and 30 °C in all oil treatments and controls. Potential denitrification rates were higher than controls in the 10 and 30?ºC treatments but responded differently to the oil type and amount. The highest rates of potential denitrification (12.7?±?1.0 nmol N g?1 wet h?1) were observed in the highly weathered 4,000 mg kg?1 oil treatment at 30 °C, suggesting increased rates of denitrification during the warmer summer months. These results indicate that the impacts on nitrogen cycling from a recurring oil spill could depend on the time of the year as well as the amount and type of oil contaminating the marsh. The study provides evidence for impact on nitrogen cycling in coastal marshes that are vulnerable to repeated hydrocarbon exposure.  相似文献

The trace metal contents of 71 core samples collected in 1992 from the bottom sediments of the Arabian Gulf are used to determine the regional distribution of concentration and pollution levels of these substances in the region. Chronic contamination was recorded in seven locations: the northwestern area (Fe), the northeastern area (Fe, V and Ni), the north-central area (V and Ni), the central area (Fe, Pb, V and Ni), the south-central area (Cu), the eastern area (Cu) and the southeastern area (Fe, V and Ni). Present-day contamination was identified in three locations only: the north-central area (V), the central area (Pb, V and Ni) and the southeastern area (Fe, V and Ni). Diversified natural and anthropogenic inputs may have provided the sources of this contamination. The V/Ni ratios of recent marine sediments cannot be used in identifying oil spillages or in oil-sediment correlation studies. Positive correlations are found between increasing trace metal concentration and decreasing carbonate content and grain size, verifying that adsorption onto muds is the primary mechanism of trace metal concentration in marine sediments. Correlations with TOC (total organic carbon) contents indicate that organic matter is a significant concentrator only in the case of Pb and Cu. With the exception of the Fe contamination in the northwest area due to river transport, all chronic and present-day trace metal concentrations are within the permissible natural background levels in the western offshore areas, including the two areas thought to be polluted by the Kuwait oil slick, thereby supporting the idea that airborne fallout from oil fires was deposited in a limited coastal area between Kuwait and Bahrain, and verifying that the oil slick had minimal effect on the state of pollution by trace metals in the Arabian Gulf.  相似文献

Scenarios for shipping traffic in the Gulf of Bothnia (GoB) by 2030 are described in order to identify the main factors that should be taken into account when preparing a Maritime Spatial Plan (MSP) for the area. The application of future research methodology to planning of marine areas was also assessed. The methods include applying existing large scale quantitative scenarios for maritime traffic in the GoB and using real-time Delphi in which an expert group discussed different factors contributing to future maritime traffic in the GoB to find out the probability and significance of the factors having an impact on maritime traffic. MSP was tested on transnational scale in the Bothnian Sea area as a pilot project.  相似文献

The objective of this review was to synthesize existing information regarding the effects of petroleum hydrocarbons on marsh macrophytes in a manner that will help guide research and improve spill-response efficiency. Petroleum hydrocarbons affect plants chemically and physically. Although plants sometime survive fouling by producing new leaves, even relatively non-toxic oils can stress or kill plants if oil physically prevents plant gas-exchange. Plant sensitivity to fouling varies among species and among populations within a species, age of the plant, and season of spill. Physical disturbance and compaction of vegetation and soil associated with clean-up activities following an oil spill appear to have detrimental effects on the US Gulf coast marshes. Other techniques, including the use of chemicals such as cleaners or bioremediation, may be necessary to address the problem. Clean-up may also be beneficial when timely removal prevents oil from migrating to more sensitive habitats.  相似文献

Field studies were conducted in two different marsh habitats in Louisiana coastal wetlands to evaluate the effects of oiling (using South Louisiana Crude oil, SLC) and the effectiveness of a shoreline cleaner (COREXIT 9580) in removing oil from plant canopies. The study sites represented two major marsh habitats; the brackish marsh site was covered by Spartina patens and the freshwater marsh was covered by Sagittaria lancifolia. Field studies were conducted in each habitat using replicated 5.8 m2 plots that were subjected to three treatments; oiled only, oiled + cleaner (cleaner was used 2 days after oiling), and a control. Plant gas exchange responses, survival, growth, and biomass accumulation were measured. Results indicated that oiling led to rapid reductions in leaf gas exchange rates in both species. However, both species in 'oiled + cleaned' plots displayed improved leaf conductance and CO2 fixation rates. Twelve weeks after treatment initiation, photosynthetic carbon fixation in both species had recovered to normal levels. Over the short-term, S. patens showed more sensitivity to oiling with SLC than S. lancifolia as was evident from the data of the number of live shoots and above-ground biomass. Above-ground biomass remained significantly lower than control in S. patens under 'oiled' and 'oiled + cleaned' treatments while it was comparable to controls in S. lancifolia. These studies indicated that the cleaner removed oil from marsh grasses and alleviated the short-term impact of oil on gas exchange function of the study plants. However, use of cleaner had no detectable effects on above-ground biomass production or regeneration at the end of the first growing season in S. patens. Similarly, no beneficial effects of cleaner on carbon fixation and number of live shoots were apparent beyond 12 weeks in S. lancifolia.  相似文献

Sediment trap material was collected during May–December in the period 1996–2008 in three coastal areas and four open sea stations in the Finnish territory of the Baltic Sea. The highest sedimentation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) with a typical source-related congener profile from chlorophenol production dominated by highly chlorinated dibenzofurans was found close to a historical source in the Kymijoki estuary. This was an order of magnitude higher than in other river estuaries and two orders of magnitude higher than in the open sea stations. The sedimentation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was also higher in river estuaries than in other areas. No significant decrease over a 12 year period of monitoring was found in concentration or in sedimentation in the Kymijoki estuary. In the western Gulf of Finland, the Archipelago Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia, the dominating congeners, calculated as toxic equivalent (TEQ) in sedimentation were 1, 2, 3, 7, 8-PeCDD and 2, 3, 4, 7, 8-PeCDF, often reported as the main congeners in deposition.  相似文献

Background, Aims and Scope Despite the large number of studies on the forms of sulfur in marine deposits, investigations on sulfur organic compounds are still rare. It is known that the processes leading to formation of intermediate and final sulfur compounds (including organic ones) in modern deposits are the results of microbiological transformation of sulfur containing proteins, as well as the microbiological reduction of sulfate ions. The latter are finally reduced by anaerobic sulfate-reducing bacteria to H2S, HS and S2−; the total sum of these is referred to as ‘hydrogen sulfide’ in chemical oceanography. Further, the formation of reduced sulfur organic derivatives (sulfides and polysulfides) is the result of interaction of the organic substance destruction products with the sulfide ions. In such cases, the main source of organic substances, as well as sulfates for the sulfur reducing processes, is the pore water in the sediments. The choice of the target of our study is based on the fact that the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland water area receives the bulk of the anthropogenic load of the St. Petersburg region. Low vertical intermixing of the water thickness is observed there (thus creating a deficiency of oxygen near the bottom), and the bottom sea current transfers the polluted salty water of the Baltic Sea into the Neva Bay. The whole of the above are the preconditions for the formation of sulfur-bearing organic compounds. A great number of bottom sediment samples for analytical surveys were collected in the Eastern Gulf of Finland during research expeditions in the years of 1997 and 2001. These were screened for structures of sulfur organic microcontaminants, including organic forms of sulfur, using advanced instrumentation and experienced personnel in our two, cooperating laboratories. This work is a part of the research being carried out on organic micro-admixtures present in bottom sediments, and is the summary of our findings on previously unstudied sulfur organic substances there. Materials and Methods A number of sulfur organic compounds present in nineteen bottom sediment samples from the Eastern Gulf of Finland (EGF) were characterized by high performance gas chromatography connected to low and high resolution mass spectrometers (GC/LRMS and GC/HRMS). The structure screening was carried out as compared with literature and library mass spectra, and taking the GC retention times into account. In the cases of an absence of mass spectra not in the literature, interpretation of the most probable structures was performed with the help of high resolution mass-spectrometric data, fragmentation rules for sulfur-bearing organic substances and ICLU simulation of spectra. These data were registered to form a conclusive ‘fingerprint’ for identification and confirmation of the structure of each novel compound found, e.g. by later syntheses of authentic model compounds. The relative contents of sulfur organic compounds were determined from MS response ratios of each compound to 2-fluorine naphthalene (internal standard). Results This paper is a completion of work, which has been published in part as three papers in the European Journal of Mass Spectrometry. As the total study result, 43 sulfur-bearing compounds were characterized. The mass spectra of 20 of them were found in the literature. The most probable structures for the 23 compounds whose mass-spectra were not available in the literature data were proposed. All of those 23 compounds were detected in bottom sediments for the first time, and 5 of them were described as originating from plants or being generated by chemical synthesis products, while the remaining 18 substances were previously unknown. The structures of these were deduced to be most probably the following (in order of their GC retention): dichloromethyl thiylsulfenylchloride, chloromethyl dichloromethyl disulfide, 3,4-dithiacyclohexene, 1,2,4-trithiacycloheptane, 1,2,3-trithiacyclohexane, tetrathiacyclopentane, 3,4,5-trithiacyclohexene, 1,2,4-trithiacyclohexane, cyclopropylhydrotrisulfide, 1,2-dithiane-3-thiol, 1,3-dithiane-2-thiol, bis(trichloromethyl)-tri-sulfide, 1,2,4,5-tetrathiacyclohexane, 1,2,3,4-tetrathiacycloheptane, 1,2,3,4-tetrathiacycloheptane, 1,2,3,4-tetrathia-cyclo-hexane, pentathiacyclohexane, and 1,2,4,6-tetrathiacyclooctane. The highest amounts of sulfur organic compounds were found in the deepest, bottom areas in the open part of the sea, where the salinity was highest, and oxygen deficiency occurred as well. Also, some coastal places with a high solid matter deposition rate had elevated contents of sulfur organic compounds. Discussion From the 43 sulfur organic compounds found, the HRMS data provided the atomic composition of the molecular ions for 16 compounds with a high confidence (see Table 3). The LRMS spectra could be identified with catalogue or literature spectra in 29 cases. The MS information obtained was insufficient in two cases: 1) The obvious molecular ion (at m/z 110) of compound 1 was not visible in LRMS. 2) For compound 43, the HRMS measurement, due to the low intensity (2%) of the molecular ion (m/z 210), could not exclude the presence of 2 oxygen atoms (instead of one sulfur atom) in the molecule. Major fragments, however, of our 43, certainly contained no oxygen atoms according to HRMS. The limited LRMS data in the literature, for an isomer of 43, had m/z values of all fragments different from those of the compound found by us. The retention times (RT) formed one more evidence for identity between compounds in different samples. The use of different non-polar columns in GC and similar, but not identical, temperature programs produced eluted peaks of novel and known compounds in each sample (mixture) in GC/HRMS and GC/LRMS. These gave sets of RTs which were in a very significant linear correlation (measured example R = 0.999866, p = 1.85E-06, N = 5). Therefore, the RTs in the HRMS analysis systems could be converted to values comparable with those from the LRMS device. The RT values, HRMS m/z values, LRMS spectra, and ICLU simulation results for each organic sulfur compound form an identification ‘fingerprint’. The interpretation of these experimental data, with supporting use of fragmentation rules, allow the giving of a provisional name and structure to the ‘suspect’. In this study and in environmental surveys of micropollutants in general, the compounds suspected of anthropogenic or natural origin occur at low levels in complex mixtures. Therefore, no bulk amount of an authentic, pure model substance for the suspect is available quite often. The most probable name and structure from the fingerprint data are very useful in guiding the preparation of the model substance for a conclusive identification. Similarly, the unknown criminal can be identified in advance by forensic science and his fingerprint, DNA, etc. as registered before the arrest. The analogy can be found in the literature and CAS register of organic polysulfides, which in great part consists of the results of sensitive mixture analysis methods. Conclusions Sediment of the Eastern Gulf of Finland is over large areas anaerobic, as indicated by the existence of novel, non-oxygenated sulfur organic microcontaminants. These substances were most abundant in anoxic and saline, deep bottom regions, and, in addition, in one coastal area near industrial discharges. This occurrence, and also the limited information about sulfur organic compounds in scientific literature, is considered evidence for the dominantly natural processes in their formation. Recommendations and Perspectives The importance and necessity of investigating the sulfur organic compounds in the bottom sediments, result from the fact that their presence can be an indicator of stable anaerobic processes. Similarly, the oxygen disappearance (anoxia) in the marine water, due to a high concentration of the sulfate ions and relatively high content of organic matter, is practically always connected with the appearance of hydrogen sulfide and sulfides. The generation of sulfur organic compounds precedes the formation of the new, or expansion of the existing anaerobic (‘hydrogen sulfide’) zones, which lead to such environmental disasters as mass destruction of hydrobionts. Many organic compounds of sulfur, including sulfides and polysulfides, are toxic to the aquatic organisms. Therefore, in addition to the danger of mass wholesale deaths of marine fauna in the bottom sediments region, there exists a probability of secondary pollution of the water thickness as well, due to the entry of those substances from bottom sediments in the water when the environmental conditions are changed (stormy weather, floods, geological activity of the earth’s crust, etc.).  相似文献
