Córdoba, as well as many other Latin American cities, is facing problems concerning air pollution. The increase in the number of cars, the poor control on emissions and the little use of catalytic converters, produce a great amount of toxic gases and particulate. Many cities have started air quality measurement programs being the size of the network strongly dependent on the available funds. In 1995, Córdoba started a measurement campaign with two mobile stations. A major part of the city has been characterized, mostly the city center and the suburban zone. Lack of data at the prevailing wind direction is the major shortcoming, but this is mainly a political decision. In this work, we review the air quality measurements performed, and we attempt to explain the causes for the low ozone values found.  相似文献

Ambient air concentrations of specific C2–C6 hydrocarbons (HCs) are reported for various days during the summer months of 1983. The samples are classified as either urban, rural or polluted rural according to the sampling site, meteorological conditions and ozone levels. Generally, both the concentrations and HC/acetylene ratios are similar to those reported by other workers for comparable sites. The alkane/alkene ratio at the rural site exceeded that for the urban site and it is concluded that the major contribution to HCs at the former site is advection from distant sources. It appears that the main source of propane in rural areas is natural gas, with about 4.5–9 ppbC unaccounted for by this source.  相似文献

Atmospheric C2–C5 hydrocarbons were determined at Deonar, an industrial suburb north of Bombay, India, during 1985. Samples were pre-concentrated on silica gel at −78°C and subsequently desorbed on to a gaschromatographic column for separation and flame ionization detection. The seasonal pattern of the monthly geometric mean hydrocarbon concentrations are used to show that refinery emissions in addition to auto exhaust are a major source of hydrocarbons at Deonar.  相似文献

Annual growth rings sampled from three free-standing trees (Platanus hybrida sp.), grew in the metropolitan area of Palermo (Italy) and covering a 118 years time span (1880–1998), have been studied for their 13C/12C carbon isotope ratios. It has been found that the 13C/12C tree ring record, during the study time interval, decreased of −3.6‰, from −26.4‰ in 1880 to −30‰ in 1998. Such a progressive depletion has been attributed to the addition of anthropogenic 13C depleted carbon dioxide to the local atmosphere. The observed 13C/12C decrease has been used to infer some possible pathways of atmospheric CO2 change in the study urban area.  相似文献

Background and purpose  

In Pakistan, almost 70% of the population lives in rural areas. Ninety-four percent of households in rural areas and 58% in urban areas depend on biomass fuels (wood, dung, and agricultural waste). These solid fuels have poor combustion efficiency. Due to incomplete combustion of the biomass fuels, the resulting smoke contains a range of health-deteriorating substances that, at varying concentrations, can pose a serious threat to human health. Indoor air pollution accounts for 28,000 deaths a year and 40 million cases of acute respiratory illness. It places a significant economic burden on Pakistan with an annual cost of 1% of GDP. Despite the mounting evidence of an association between indoor air pollution and ill health, policy makers have paid little attention to it. This review analyzes the existing information on levels of indoor air pollution in Pakistan and suggests suitable intervention methods.  相似文献

The equilibrium partitioning of formaldehyde (HCHO) between air and snow was studied in a series of laboratory experiments conducted at −5°C, −15°C, and −35°C, in order to understand how partitioning of HCHO between air and polar snow varies with temperature, and thus seasonally on the ice sheet. Measured partitioning coefficients were 56, 93, and 245 mol l−1 atm−1 for −5°C, −15°C and −35°C, respectively, showing a similar trend as the values previously estimated from field observations. Estimates of the pseudo-first-order rate coefficient for air–snow exchange for the same three temperatures were 4.1×10−4, 1.1×10−4, and 1.1×10−5 s−1, respectively. This implies a time scale for air–snow equilibration of the order of hours to days for HCHO accumulated at or near the ice–air interface on snow grains. Comparing the current laboratory partitioning coefficients with those estimated from measurements of air and freshly fallen snow in Greenland during summer demonstrates that the snow is supersaturated and should degas HCHO to the surrounding air. During this degassing, polar snow should be a significant source of HCHO to the lower troposphere.  相似文献

Sets of new and used SUMMA® polished stainless steel canisters were tested for storage stability of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Evacuated canisters were filled at a controlled rate with ambient air containing added concentrations of 15 VOCs (14 chlorinated, one brominated) at < 2 ppbv. Concentrations of VOCs in each canister were then periodically determined during 7-day or 30-day storage periods using simultaneous flame ionization and electron capture detection. No initial decreases in concentrations of target compounds were observed. Statistical analysis of data showed that the relative standard deviation of concentrations of most VOCs in each canister set was 10% or less during the storage periods. For the 7-day tests, the mean change in concentration per day was within ± 3.2 %. These canisters appear suitable as an alternative to other sampling techniques, at least for most of the compounds tested here.  相似文献

It is generally believed that indoor air pollution, one way or another may cause indoor air complaints. However, any association between volatile organic compounds (VOCs) concentrations and increase of indoor climate complaints, like the sick-building syndrome symptoms, is not straightforward. The reported symptom rates of, in particular, eye and upper airway irritation cannot generally be explained by our present knowledge of common chemically non-reactive VOCs measured indoors. Recently, experimental evidence has shown those chemical reactions between ozone (either with or without nitrogen dioxide) and unsaturated organic compounds (e.g. from citrus and pine oils) produce strong eye and airway irritating species. These have not yet been well characterised by conventional sampling and analytical techniques. The chemical reactions can occur indoors, and there is indirect evidence that they are associated with eye and airway irritation. However, many other volatile and non-volatile organic compounds have not generally been measured which could equally well have potent biological effects and cause an increase of complaint rates, and posses a health/comfort risk. As a consequence, it is recommended to use a broader analytical window of organic compounds than the classic VOC window as defined by the World Health Organisation. It may include hitherto not yet sampled or identified intermediary species (e.g., radicals, hydroperoxides and ionic compounds like detergents) as well as species deposited onto particles. Additionally, sampling strategies including emission testing of building products should carefully be linked to the measurement of organic compounds that are expected, based on the best available toxicological knowledge, to have biological effects at indoor concentrations.  相似文献

Abstract

Residues of 2,4‐D (2,4‐dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) in air samples from several sampling sites in central and southern Saskatchewan during the spraying seasons in the 1966–68 and 1970–75 periods were determined by gas‐liquid Chromatographic techniques. Initially, individual esters of 2,4‐D were characterized by retention times and confirmed further by co‐injection and dual column procedures. Since 1973, however, only total 2,4‐D acid levels in air samples have been determined after esterification to the methyl ester and confirmed by gc/ms techniques whenever possible.

Up to 50% of the daily samples collected during the spraying season at any of the locations and during any given year contained 2,4‐D, with butyl esters being found most frequently. The daily 24‐hr mean atmospheric concentrations of 2,4‐D ranged from 0.01 to 1.22 μg/m3, 0.01 to 13.50 μg/m3, and 0.05 to 0.59 μg/m for the iso‐propyl, mixed butyl and iso‐octyl esters, respectively. Even when the samples were analysed for the total 2,4‐D content, i.e. from 1973 onwards, the maximum level of the total acid reached only 23.14 μg/m. In any given year and at any of the sampling sites, about 30% of the samples contained less than 0.01 μg/m3 of 2,4‐D. In another 40% of the samples, the levels of 2,4‐D ranged from 0.01 to 0.099 yg/m. Only about 30% of the samples contained 2,4‐D concentrations higher than 0.1 μg/m3, with only 10% or less exceeding 1 μg/m3.

None of the samples, obtained with the high volume particu‐late sampler, showed any detectable levels of 2,4‐D, indicating little or no transport of 2,4‐D adsorbed on dust particles or as crystals of amine salts.  相似文献

In 1997, the United States National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for ozone was revised from a 1-h average of 0.12 parts per million (ppm) to an 8-h average of 0.08 ppm. Analysis of ozone data for the ensemble of the contiguous United States and for the period 1980–1998 shows that the average number of summer days per year in exceedance of the new standard is in the range 8–24 in the Northeast and in Texas, and 12–73 in southern California. The probability of exceedance increases with temperature and exceeds 20% in the Northeast for daily maximum temperatures above 305 K. We present the results of several different approaches to analyzing the long-term trends in the old and new standards over the continental United States from 1980 to 1998. Daily temperature data are used to resolve meteorological variability and isolate the effects of changes in anthropogenic emissions. Significant negative trends are found in the Northeast urban corridor, in the Los Angeles Basin and on the western bank of Lake Michigan. Temperature segregation enhances the detection of negative trends. Positive trends occur at isolated sites, mostly in the Southeast; a strong positive trend is found in Nashville (Tennessee). There is some evidence that, except in the Southwest, air quality improvements from the 1980s to the 1990s have leveled off in the past decade.  相似文献

Ground-based ambient air monitoring was conducted to assess the contribution of crop residue burning of wheat (Triticum aestivum) and rice (Oriza sativa) at different locations in three districts (Kaithal, Kurukshetra, and Karnal) of the agricultural state of Haryana in India for two successive years (2016 and 2017). The Air Quality Index (AQI) and concentration of primary pollutants (SOx, NOx, and PM2.5) were determined in rice and wheat crop season, for burning and non-burning periods. During crop residue burning periods, concentrations of SOx, NOx, and PM2.5 were exceeded the NAAQS values by 78%, 71%, and 53%, respectively. A significant increase in SOx (4.5 times), NOx (3.8 times), and PM2.5 concentration (3.5 times) was observed in stubble burning periods as compared to pre-burning (p < 0.05). A positive and significant correlation among the three pollutant concentrations was observed (p < 0.01). The AQI of KA site in Karnal district fell in severely polluted category during 2016 for rice as well as wheat residue burning period, and of KK site in Kaithal during wheat residue burning in year 2017. Results of present study indicate a remarkable increase in pollutant concentration (SOx, NOx, and PM2.5) during the crop residue burning periods. To the best of our knowledge, the outcomes of present study in this region have not been reported in earlier reports. Hence, there is an urgent need to curb air pollution by adopting sustainable harvesting technologies and management of residues.

The air-sea gas exchange of alpha-hexachlorocyclohexane (α-HCH) in the Canadian Arctic was estimated using a micrometeorological approach and the commonly used Whitman two-film model. Concurrent shipboard measurements of α-HCH in air at two heights (1 and 15 m) and in surface seawater were conducted during the Circumpolar Flaw Lead study in 2008. Sampling was carried out during eight events in the early summer time when open water was encountered. The micrometeorological technique employed the vertical gradient in air concentration and the wind speed to estimate the flux; results were corrected for atmospheric stability using the Monin-Obukhov stability parameter. The Whitman two-film model used the concentrations of α-HCH in surface seawater, in bulk air at 1 and 15 m above the surface, and the Henry's law constant adjusted for temperature and salinity to derive the flux. Both approaches showed that the overall net flux of α-HCH was from water to air. Mean fluxes calculated using the micrometeorological technique ranged from -3.5 to 18 ng m(-2) day(-1) (mean 7.4), compared to 3.5 to 14 ng m(-2) day(-1) (mean 7.5) using the Whitman two-film model. Flux estimates for individual events agreed in direction and within a factor of two in magnitude for six of eight events. For two events, fluxes estimated by micrometeorology were zero or negative, while fluxes estimated with the two-film model were positive, and the reasons for these discrepancies are unclear. Improvements are needed to shorten air sampling times to ensure that stationarity of meteorological conditions is not compromised over the measurement periods. The micrometeorological technique could be particularly useful to estimate fluxes of organic chemicals over water in situations where no water samples are available.  相似文献

Some of the existing National Ambient Air Quality Standards require the use of an extreme observed concentration in a year to determine compliance. Since observed extreme values tend to be not reliable, different statistical approaches for determining the extreme values have been used or suggested. However, none of these approaches properly take into account the effects of an underlying trend and the serial correlation of the air quality time series. By means of a time series simulation, these effects can be considered concurrently in estimating the extreme values.This paper reports the results of such a simulation for determining the statistics of the seven highest values (rank m = 1–7, m = 1 representing the highest value) using actual air quality data that contain both trends and autocorrelations. The result of this simulation shows that for a high-pollution season of 122 days, the commonly used asymptotic distributions overestimate the maximum (m = 1) values and underestimate their uncertainties. As one moves from m = 1 to m = 7, the over- and underestimations by the asymptotic distributions worsen (compared to the simulation result). These findings in logarithmic space are further enhanced when they are converted back to concentration space. The simulation using the oxidant data for Azusa, California further shows that the uncertainties associated with the estimates Of the extreme values are typically 20% of the values for m = 1 and 10% of the values for m = 7. Compared to the observed data, which is a single series for each year, the result based on the popular lognormal distribution consistently overpredicts the extreme values, by about 40% for the maximum values and about 20% for the seventh highest values.Our results illustrate the difficulty of estimating the extreme values of air quality time series with accuracy and confidence. However, the accuracy and confidence of the estimates improve as the rank moves away from the extreme. This result calls for the need for using a less extreme value in setting a sensible air quality standard. Of course, such a standard can be set without sacrificing its stringency.  相似文献

Vertical gradients of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured over a maize field and a soybean field in 1995 and 1996, respectively, in the Lower Coastal Plains of North Carolina. The measurements over the maize field were conducted in its early growth period, during May 1995, and the measurements over the soybean field were conducted in its middle and later growth periods during July through August 1996 at the same location. These measurements were combined with micrometeorological flux measurements to determine emission flux measurements for various VOCs. This measurement programme was part of project NOVA (Natural emissions of Oxidant precursors: Validation of techniques and Assessment) to estimate the flux of VOCs. Methanol was identified as the major biogenic compound for both years with the average flux of 3450 ± 1456 µg/m²/hr over maize and 3079 ± 2766 µg/m²/hr over soybean. Acetone is another compound that was identified as a biogenic compound for both years with the average flux of 425 ± 223 µg/m²/hr over maize and 2701 ± 1710 µg/m²/hr over soybean. In addition to biogenic compounds, a large number of aromatic compounds, including styrene and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, were also identified as emissions from the ground over the soybean field.  相似文献

Since we demonstrated the natural formation of chloroform in soil, the question arose to which extent this contributes to the chloroform present in the atmosphere. Concentration gradients in soil air and atmospheric air of different forests were measured. Chloroform concentration gradients indicating emission occur in forest soils and the atmosphere under the canopy, whereas this was not observed for other chlorinated solvents. Above the canopy all concentration gradients observed for chloroform and 1,1,1-trichloroethane indicate deposition. The emission flux was measured using enclosures and calculated from the observed concentration gradients in soil air and atmospheric air. Wood-degrading areas and soils with a humic layer were found to emit up to 1000 ng chloroform m−2 h−1 and seem to be larger chloroform sources than the other areas of study. Rather unexpectedly, some points of one sampling site appeared to emit 1,1,1-trichloroethane, tetrachloromethane and tetrachloroethene. A reasonable agreement was found between the fluxes using enclosures and those derived from the concentration gradients in soil air and atmospheric air.  相似文献

The response of Pinus maximartinezii Rzedowski to photochemical oxidant air pollution was examined using 100 trees, during a 1 year cycle, at Vivero de Coyoacán, a tree nursery located in the south central part of México City, where exposure to polluted air masses has been continuous. The tree response assessment method was based upon documented symptoms of pollutant injury on the foliage. The results showed a homogeneous pattern of health and vigor and only medium sensitivity (based on foliar injury) to photochemical oxidants, although the trees maintained their needles through a three and not the normal 5 year period as at its geographic location of origin (different habitat or environment). Nevertheless, these data suggest that this species of pine could be proposed as good planting material for reforestation in the urban metropolitan area of México city.  相似文献

The levels of photochemical air pollutants: O3, NO and NO2, were monitored in Athens and in the neighbouring region of the Mesogia plain (Spata, Artemis and Markopoulo) from 1 May–31 August 2000. Phytodetection of ozone was also conducted using bioindicator plants of Bel-W3 and Zichnomirodata (KK6/5) tobacco varieties. The average maximum daily O3 concentration was 60–75 ppb, while the 24 hour average ranged from 40–65 ppb. The AOT40 (ppb hours) index was very high in Athens (16 679 over 121 days), Spata (16 325 over 110 days), Artemis (8093 over 22 days) and Markopoulo (18 646 over 113 days), suggesting potentially phytotoxic ozone levels. The ozone bioindicator plants of Bel-W3 and KK6/5 tobacco varieties were highly injured in all regions confirming the phytotoxicity of those ozone levels. The levels of NO and NO2 recorded at the three stations, in the Mesogia plain, were considerably lower than those occurring in Athens. The data presented here provide important background information concerning pollution levels in the Mesogia plain shortly before the operation of the new international airport 'Eleftherios Venizelos' in this region (March 2001).  相似文献

EDB (ethylene dibromide) is of regulatory interest because it has cancer inducing properties and is a causative agent of aspermia. Previously evaluated methodology was used to determine the extent of exposure of workers to EDB in citrus fumigation stations and a warehouse used as a holding site before shipment.
