This paper proposes a model for predicting the longitudinal profiles of streamwise velocities in an open channel with a model patch of vegetation. The governing equation was derived from the momentum equation and flow continuity equation. The model can estimate the longitudinal profiles of velocities both inside and outside a vegetation patch. Laboratory experiments indicate that the longitudinal profiles of velocities inside a patch and in the adjacent bare channel have the same adjustment distance in the longitudinal direction, but the profiles have different trends because the vegetation drag drives the flow from the patch to the adjacent bare channel. The model considers different dimensionless parameters in two flow adjustment regions upstream of and inside the patch. Sixteen sets of experimental data from different sources are used to verify the model. The model is capable of modeling the longitudinal profiles of velocities inside and outside patches of cylinders or cylinder-like plants. Compared to a previous model, the current model improves the modeling accuracy of longitudinal profiles of velocities.

The ability to model marine currents can be a powerful device for many planning activities, for which the knowledge of the velocity field is of pivotal importance, such as the evaluation of current-induced loading on maritime structures or the diffusion and dispersion of polluted flow discharges. Observations of time-averaged velocity profiles, taken with a vessel mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler during a monitoring survey program in the seas of Southern Italy, are analysed in this paper. The measurements were taken under non-breaking conditions, offshore the surf zone, with the aim of reproducing the vertical trends of the streamwise velocity by means of standard theoretical laws. To evaluate also the possible influence of stratification on the current velocity profile shape, together with velocity measurements water temperature and salinity were also measured at the same time and locations, by means of a CTD recorder. The examined surveys referred to different time periods and sites, to guarantee a general validity of deductions. On the basis of the experiments, we verified the actual existence of a log-layer and concluded that the upper limit of the region in which the log law is applicable extends well beyond the inner region. Moreover, the deviations of the measured velocity from the logarithmic profiles above the height of the log layer is consistent with the effects of stratification. The parameters of the log law were estimated, depending on both flow dynamics and stratification in the target area. As a second step, in the most superficial and stratified layer, the velocity profiles were modelled by means of a power law, which fitted the measured data well. According to previous studies, the power law parameters result Reynolds number dependent by means of a new proposed formulation. Finally, the bottom stress and the bottom drag coefficient were investigated.  相似文献

Coastal lagoons are characterized by a constant threat of eutrophication and a critical coexistence of differing submerged vegetation forms. This paper investigates the competitive equilibrium of macroalgae and phanerogams in the Orbetello lagoon in relation to physico-chemical and environmental factors, including wind, nutrients in the water column, and sediment characteristics. A mathematical model describing the evolution of the submerged vegetation as a function of the abiotic parameters is used here in conjunction with specific experimental studies to explain the relationship between phanerogams (seagrasses) prairie expansion, water movements, and sediment characteristics. The combination of specific sediment sampling and mathematical modelling shows that water circulation and the state of the upper sediment are both dominant factors in determining the phanerogams distribution in the lagoon and the mutually exclusive growth of these groups in differing parts of the lagoon. Water currents control the distribution of floating macroalgae, resulting in an uneven accumulation of decomposing biomass and phanerogams seed dispersal. The oxygenation provided by the rooted phanerogams affects the sediment characteristics, making them suitable for further prairie expansion. In addition to sediment analysis the use of a mathematical model combining the hydrodynamics and the water quality of the lagoon provides a thorough explanation of the expansion of the rooted vegetation in critical areas. A further result of this research is the validation of the model, originally calibrated with the lagoon central stations’ data, with the newly acquired data from several other parts of the ecosystem. The model predictions are in good agreement with the field observations under a number of environmental conditions and explain the observed expansion trend of phanerogams, which are beneficial for the lagoon ecology, more thoroughly than by relying on the sediment observations alone.  相似文献

In this work we investigate experimentally and numerically the flow structure around foliaged plants deployed in a channel with gravels on the bed under submerged and barely submerged conditions. Velocity and Reynolds stress were measured by using a NORTEK Vectrino profiler. Visual observation shows that the initial motion of gravels is easier to be triggered under the condition of flow with barely submerged vegetation. This is confirmed by the measured velocity, Reynolds stress and total kinetic energy (TKE) profiles. The velocity exhibits a speed up in the near-bed region, and the associated Reynolds stress and TKE increase there. A 3D numerical model is then verified against the experiments and used to investigate systematically the effect of degree of submergence of foliaged plants on the channel bed shear stress. The results show that the maximum bed shear stress occurs when the foliage is situated slightly below the water surface, which can enhance channel bed instability.  相似文献

This research examined the temporal distribution of turbulent structure near a streambank toe through the progression of a flood wave in West Run (Morgantown, WV, USA). Three-dimensional velocities and water depths were measured through a 17-h flood event. Turbulence characteristics were examined: Reynolds stresses, turbulent kinetic energy, and turbulence intensities. On average, near-boundary velocity during the rising stage was less than the falling stage, likely due to the measurement location and local roughness. The velocity vectors shifted from towards bed before the flood wave to toward the streambank during progression of the flood wave. Turbulent kinetic energy increased with increasing water depth during the rising stage. Reynolds stress, τxz, increased with increasing water depth during the rising stage, but the majority of the stresses were negative through the storm event. Reynolds stress, τxy, was positive throughout the event and did not vary with depth. This work is among the first to evaluate turbulence during depth-varying flows in the field.  相似文献

Turbulent velocity profile in fully-developed open channel flows   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The determination of velocity profile in turbulent narrow open channels is a difficult task due to the significant effects of the anisotropic turbulence that involve the Prandtl’s second type of secondary flow occurring in the cross section. With these currents the maximum velocity appears below the free surface that is called dip phenomenon. The well-known logarithmic law describes the velocity distribution in the inner region of the turbulent boundary layer but it is not adapted to define the velocity profile in the outer region of narrow channels. This paper relies on an analysis of the Navier–Stokes equations and yields a new formulation of the vertical velocity profile in the center region of steady, fully developed turbulent flows in open channels. This formulation is able to predict time averaged primary velocity in the outer region of the turbulent boundary layer for both narrow and wide open channels. The proposed law is based on the knowledge of the aspect ratio and involves a parameter CAr depending on the position of the maximum velocity (ξdip). ξdip may be derived, either from measurements or from an empirical equation given in this paper. A wide range of longitudinal velocity profile data for narrow open channels has been used for validating the model. The agreement between the measured and the computed velocities is rather good, despite the simplification used.  相似文献

The hydrodynamics of flows through a finite length semi-rigid vegetation patch (VP) were investigated experimentally and numerically. Detailed measurements have been carried out to determine the spatial variation of velocity and turbulence profiles within the VP. The measurement results show that an intrusion region exists in which the peak Reynolds stress remains near the bed. The velocity profile is invariant within the downstream part of the VP while the Reynolds stress profile requires a longer distance to attain the spatially invariant state. Higher vegetation density leads to a shorter adjustment length of the transition region, and a higher turbulence level within the VP. The vegetation density used in the present study permits the passing through of water and causes the peak Reynolds stress and turbulence kinetic energy each the maximum at the downstream end of the patch. A 3D Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes model incorporating the Spalart–Allmaras turbulence closure was employed subsequently to replicate the flow development within the VP. The model reproduced transitional flow characteristics well and the results are in good agreement with the experimental data. Additional numerical experiments show that the adjustment length can be scaled by the water depth, mean velocity and maximum shear stress. Empirical equations of the adjustment lengths for mean velocity and Reynolds stress were derived with coefficients quantified from the numerical simulation results.  相似文献

Gravity driven flows on inclines can be caused by cold, saline or turbid inflows into water bodies. Another example are cold downslope winds, which are caused by cooling of the atmosphere at the lower boundary. In a well-known contribution, Ellison and Turner (ET) investigated such flows by making use of earlier work on free shear flows by Morton, Taylor and Turner (MTT). Their entrainment relation is compared here with a spread relation based on a diffusion model for jets by Prandtl. This diffusion approach is suitable for forced plumes on an incline, but only when the channel topography is uniform, and the flow remains supercritical. A second aspect considered here is that the structure of ET’s entrainment relation, and their shallow water equations, agrees with the one for open channel flows, but their depth and velocity scales are those for free shear flows, and derived from the velocity field. Conversely, the depth of an open channel flow is the vertical extent of the excess mass of the liquid phase, and the average velocity is the (known) discharge divided by the depth. As an alternative to ET’s parameterization, two sets of flow scales similar to those of open channel flows are outlined for gravity currents in unstratified environments. The common feature of the two sets is that the velocity scale is derived by dividing the buoyancy flux by the excess pressure at the bottom. The difference between them is the way the volume flux is accounted for, which—unlike in open channel flows—generally increases in the streamwise direction. The relations between the three sets of scales are established here for gravity currents by allowing for a constant co-flow in the upper layer. The actual ratios of the three width, velocity, and buoyancy scales are evaluated from available experimental data on gravity currents, and from field data on katabatic winds. A corresponding study for free shear flows is referred to. Finally, a comparison of mass-based scales with a number of other flow scales is carried out for available data on a two-layer flow over an obstacle. Mass-based flow scales can also be used for other types of flows, such as self-aerated flows on spillways, water jets in air, or bubble plumes.  相似文献

The influence of turbulence on the settling velocity of small particles remains an inconclusive research subject. Both enhanced and retarded particle settling compared to quiescent settling have been reported in previous literature, and several theories have been proposed. Among the mechanisms that account for reduced settling velocities in turbulence, the loitering effect is an important one that generally exists in various conditions. This study focuses on an analytical prediction of reduced particle settling velocities due to the loitering effect. By considering the velocity autocorrelation function as a step function analogous to the free path theory, and using a modified integral time scale to capture the essence of the loitering effect, an analytical expression is derived for predicting the reduction in particle settling velocities in turbulent flows. Calculation results of the expression are then examined by comparing with the results of a random walk model, direct numerical simulations that conditionally captured the reduction of particle settling velocities due to the loitering effect, and several representative experiments. Major possible influencing factors on the prediction of the analytical expression and applicable conditions of the expression are then further discussed. The proposed analytical expression is shown to be suitable for predicting the reduced settling velocities of small particles with relatively weak inertia in turbulent flows and could provide a reasonable explanation for reported cases in which small to moderate reductions in particle settling velocities were observed.

The kinematics of hydrodynamic turbulent flows developed in vertical slot fishways (VSF) was studied in detail in flow patterns not yet published to date for the purposes of modifying existing devices and to allow for the passage of all fishes, particularly the smaller species. A transparent device based on the typical prototype dimensions of VSF in France was constructed for the experiment. The velocity measurements were carried out by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). These measurements were used to determine the various kinematics parameters characterizing the flow. From the dimensions and slope of the fishway, two flow topologies highlighting the swirling pattern were proposed. The method of Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) was used to undertake unsteady and energetic analyses to characterize the main phases of flow evolution that fish passing through the passage may encounter.  相似文献

This study employs theoretical and empirical concepts from ecology and economics to derive a lower bound of the marginal damage function for reductions in the level of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) in Chesapeake Bay. These reductions in SAV are believed to be a consequence of the runoff of agricultural chemicals, discharges from waste treatment plants, and soil erosion. The study examines the indirect ecological consequences of pollution in Chesapeak Bay fisheries, in a fashion which is consistent with the economic theory of benefit measurement.  相似文献

We study a class of chain-binomial metapopulation models, giving special attention to the ‘mainland-island’ configuration, where patches receive immigrants from an external source. We evaluate the distribution of the number nt of occupied patches at any census time t and establish a law of large numbers that identifies a deterministic trajectory which can be used to approximate the process when the number of patches is large. We also establish a central limit law, which shows that the fluctuations about this trajectory are approximately normally distributed. We describe briefly much finer results that can be used for model calibration.  相似文献

Results are presented from a series of large-scale experiments investigating the internal and near-bed dynamics of bi-directional stratified flows with a net-barotropic component across a submerged, trapezoidal, sill obstruction. High-resolution velocity and density profiles are obtained in the vicinity of the obstruction to observe internal-flow dynamics under a range of parametric forcing conditions (i.e. variable saline and fresh water volume fluxes; density differences; sill obstruction submergence depths). Detailed synoptic velocity fields are measured across the sill crest using 2D particle image velocimetry, while the density structure of the two-layer exchange flows is measured using micro-conductivity probes at several sill locations. These measurements are designed to aid qualitative and quantitative interpretation of the internal-flow processes associated with the lower saline intrusion layer blockage conditions, and indicate that the primary mechanism for this blockage is mass exchange from the saline intrusion layer due to significant interfacial mixing and entrainment under dominant, net-barotropic, flow conditions in the upper freshwater layer. This interfacial mixing is quantified by considering both the isopycnal separation of vertically-sorted density profiles across the sill, as well as calculation of corresponding Thorpe overturning length scales. Analysis of the synoptic velocity fields and density profiles also indicates that the net exchange flow conditions remain subcritical (G < 1) across the sill for all parametric conditions tested. An analytical two-layer exchange flow model is then developed to include frictional and entrainment effects, both of which are needed to account for turbulent stresses and saline entrainment into the upper freshwater layer. The experimental results are used to validate two key model parameters: (1) the internal-flow head loss associated with boundary friction and interfacial shear; and (2) the mass exchange from the lower saline layer into the upper fresh layer due to entrainment.  相似文献

This contribution presents particle image velocimetry measurements for an open channel stationary uniform and fully developed flow of water over a horizontal flat bed of uniform glass beads in presence of a staggered array of vertical cylindrical stems. The main objective was to explore and quantify the influence of the stems-to-flow relative submergence, h v /h, over the mean flow and local turbulence intensities. A comparison with measurements for the non-vegetated flow over the same granular bed is presented. Results indicate a remarkable influence of h v /h over the whole flow field. The time-average mean flow presents a strong spatial variation in the layer of the flow occupied by the stems. The local velocity fluctuations are strongly affected by the presence of the stems, with regions in between the stems where they reach peaks that are several times larger than those encountered in the flow in absence of vegetation. The turbulence intensity profiles are noticeably different when compared to those measured in the non-vegetated flow conditions. From previous works it was possible to derive an equation for the mean velocity, U v , of the flow through the vegetated layer of height h v . The prediction of this equation is in good agreement with the uniform value for the double-average longitudinal velocity profile in this layer. A final brief discussion about the possible impact of these vegetated-flow features on the sediment transport is presented.  相似文献
