The influence of different diets (Tetramin dry fish food, frozen spinach, and Dieterba mixed cereals for babies) on survival, fecundity and sex ratio was examined in a population of the polychaete Dinophilus gyrociliatus. Specimens were collected in the harbour of Genoa and were studied under controlled laboratory conditions. In D. gyrociliatus sex determination is progamic; a single ovary produces eggs of two sizes, the small eggs develop into dwarf males and the large ones into females. Sex determination is chromosomal with male heterogamety of the XO/XX type, and therefore a 1:1 population sex ratio is expected. The results of the experiment revealed that diet significantly influenced survival, fecundity and also the sex ratio. With all diets the maximum lifespan was about the same, but after 10 weeks of experiments the percentage of survivors was 9% with Tetramin, 35% with spinach and 39% with cereals. Fecundity was different in relation to diet; females fed with Tetramin produced the maximum number of eggs. The greater and earlier mortality with the Tetramin diet could be related to the greater fecundity seen in this group, in that, the greater amount of energy allocated to the production of gametes may have reduced the percentage of individuals surviving to maximum age. In this species, diet affected not only fecundity but also the sex ratio; the worms fed with cereals showed a clear displacement of sex ratio towards males. Life table response experiments were performed to evaluate the demographic consequences of: (1) the dietary regimes and (2) the length of laboratory rearing in strains of Dinophilus gyrociliatus, a small infaunal polychaete. The first experiment was performed using animals recently collected from the natural environment and fed either on spinach or on Tetramin (artificial fish food with high caloric content). Starting from this original group, two distinct laboratory strains were established: the first raised only with spinach, the second only with Tetramin. In the first experiment, the group fed on Tetramin exhibited greater population growth rate (5), shorter generation time (T) and reduced expectation of life (e0) with respect to the animals fed on spinach. The second experiment took place 2 years later to evaluate the difference in life history traits between these two laboratory strains. In the case of the group fed on Tetramin, population parameters exhibited marked variations; in fact, 5 and the net reproductive rate (R0) were significantly higher and T and e0 were shorter than the corresponding parameters observed in the first experiment. Conversely, the demographic variations induced by laboratory rearing on a spinach diet were limited to a reduction in the expectation of life. The decomposition analysis showed that the reduction in generation time and the increase in fecundity occurring during the first 4 weeks of life accounted for nearly all the differences in 5. During the long breeding period at constant temperature, photoperiod and salinity, a continuous selection of the most precocious and fecund individuals may have taken place as a consequence of the abundance of resources and the lack of predation.  相似文献

Effects of food quality on fecundity (defined as the number of eggs deposited in the entire life of a female), egg size and egg energy content (measured by differential scanning calorimeter were studied in two populations of Ophryotrocha labronica (La Greca and Bacci): one taken from the natural environment immediately prior to the experiment, and the other from the same original environment, but bred for more than 5␣years in the laboratory. Results indicated that fecundity is mediated both by food quality and population origin. Specimens fed Tetramin generally spawned more frequently than those receiving the other two diets, while individuals bred in the laboratory since 1990 spawned more frequently than the wild population. Also the number of eggs per spawning and the total fecundity vary with the quality of the diet; Tetramin gives the highest fecundity values. The differences in egg size and energy content seem essentially related to the population origin, in fact, with all diets laboratory specimens produced larger eggs with higher energy contents than wild specimens.  Effect of salinity on the feeding rate and parthenogenetic reproduction of asexual females of the cladoceran Diaphanosoma celebensis Stingelin was studied. Short-term (10 h) grazing experiments were conducted using Isochrysis galbana as feed at 5, 17, 25 and 30 psu salinity. Gut pigment concentration showed a significantly higher rate of feeding at lower salinities. Survival, growth, maturity attainment and neonate production of asexual females reared in the above four test salinities indicated preference for lower salinities (5 and 17 psu). The mean size of adult females decreased from 909 to 593 μm, mean life span from 24 to 5 d, mean neonate production from 12 to 2 and mean size of neonates from 434 to 400 μm as the salinity increased from 5 to 30 psu. Salinity variations also affected the size and age of primiparous females. Resting egg formation and sexual reproduction did not occur at the tested salinities. The results indicate that D. celebensis is adapted to low saline, estuarine environments. Received: 14 January 2000 / Accepted: 24 March 2000  相似文献

The study of the male and female karyotypes of the polychaete Dinophilus gyrociliatus was performed with the aim of ascertaining the diploid number of chromosomes and confirming the existence of karyological differences between the two sexes. Our results evidenced that the female karyotype of D. gyrociliatus consists of 2n=24 chromosomes, while the male karyotype has 2n=23 chromosomes. X chromosomes are subtelocentric and much bigger than the autosomes. The size of the D. gyrociliatus chromosomes, which in the female embryos vary in length from little more than 2.8 wm to less than 0.7 wm, are relatively small by comparison with those of other polychaetes. The existence of maternal and environmental factors able to influence the sex ratio of D. gyrociliatus and chromosomal differences between the sexes confirms that: (1) sex determination is chromosomal and syngamic of the XX-X0 type and (2) control of the sex ratio is progamic and depends on genetic and environmental factors.  相似文献

The talitrid amphipod Uhlorchestia spartinophila lives in close association with standing-dead leaves of the smooth cordgrass Spartina alterniflora Loisel in salt marshes along the Atlantic coast of North America. This study probed the strength of the trophic link between the amphipod population and the decomposition process in this detrital-based ecosystem. We measured survival, growth and reproductive output in groups of amphipods reared for 6 wk on five diets derived from sheath and blade portions of S. alterniflora leaves just prior to (senescent) and during (dead) decomposition. In unfed treatments, the daily specific mortality rate was 0.391 and starved amphipods survived no longer than 11 d. Among the fed treatments, a diet of senescent sheaths resulted in the lowest survival (20%) and yielded no offspring. Groups fed senescent blades, dead sheaths, dead blades and unwashed dead sheaths had survival rates of 56 to 84% and produced 5.0 to 12.5 offspring replicate−1. Sex ratio usually favored females, but approached unity in treatments with high overall survival, suggesting that quality of available food resources may influence sex ratio in this species. Mean specific growth rates (mm mm−1 d−1) ranged from 0.013 to 0.016, and matched previous estimates of growth from field populations. Overall ecological performance (survival + growth + reproduction) was similar for all food treatments, except senescent sheaths, which yielded a final mean (±SD) dry biomass (0.4 ± 0.42 mg replicate−1) of amphipods significantly lower than that of other diets (1.7 ± 0.81 to 2.6 ± 0.69 mg replicate−1). Natural diets derived from decomposing cordgrass leaves can fulfill the nutritional requirements of U. spartinophila populations, but variation in initial amounts of living fungal biomass among the five experimental diets only partially explained the responses of amphipods in our experiment. Structural characteristics and variation in rates of fungal occupation within different portions of cordgrass leaves may affect the amphipod's ability to access plant production made available by decomposers. Four species of microalgae (Chaetoceros muelleri, Tetraselmis suecica, Tahitian Isochrysis sp. (T-iso) and Dunaliella tertiolecta) with distinctly different fatty acid profiles were grown in continuous culture and fed to prawn larvae (Penaeus japonicus, P. semisulcatus and P. monodon) as monospecific diets. The best two diets (C. muelleri and T. suecica) were also fed as a mixed diet. Experiments were run until the larvae fed the control diet of C. muelleri metamorphosed to Mysis 1. The survival and development (i.e. performance) of the larvae were affected by algal diet, and the diets were ranked in the order of decreasing nutritional value: C. muelleri ≥ T. suecica > T-iso > D. tertiolecta. Larvae fed a mixed diet of C. muelleri and T. suecica (2:3 by dry weight) performed as well or better than those fed C. muelleri, and the performance of both these groups of larvae was better than those fed T. suecica. The lipid and carbohydrate compositions of the algae had little or no effect on the lipid and carbohydrate compositions of the larvae or their performance. However, the larvae that performed best (i.e. those fed C. muelleri) had significantly more lipid and carbohydrate than those that performed worst (i.e. those fed D. tertiolecta). Larvae fed C. muelleri or the mixed-algae diet had higher proportions of the essential fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA, 20:5(n-3)] and arachidonic acid [ARA, 20:4(n-6)] than the larvae fed on other diets. Furthermore, the larvae fed T. suecica, which showed intermediate performance between larvae fed C. muelleri and T-iso or D. tertiolecta, also had higher proportions of EPA and ARA. Both C. muelleri and T. suecica contained EPA and ARA, but T-iso and D. tertiolecta did not, except for trace amounts of EPA in T-iso. The fatty acid ARA appears to be much more important in the diet of larval prawns than has so far been considered. The level of the essential fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid [DHA, 22:6(n-3)] in the algal diet and the larvae was not related to the performance of the larvae; only C. muelleri and T-iso contained DHA. However, the nauplii contained large proportions of DHA, suggesting that these were sufficient to meet the larval requirements for DHA during their development to Mysis 1. Mixed-algae diets could improve the performance of larvae by providing a more comprehensive range of fatty acids. Received: 22 April 1998 / Accepted: 3 December 1998  相似文献

In many vertebrates, environmental factors influence gamete differentiation and growth of the mature gonad through alteration of sex steroid production or action; however, it is unclear how gamete differentiation and gonadal growth are regulated in echinoids. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of dietary administration of estradiol (E2), progesterone (P4), testosterone (T) and finasteride (F, a 5α-reductase inhibitor) on the ovaries and testes of mature Lytechinus variegatus (Lamarck) during gonadal growth. Echinoids were fed a formulated diet supplemented with steroids or steroids in combination with finasteride for 36 d. The effects of dietary administration of steroids on L. variegatus were both steroid- and sex-specific. The mean ovary index was 54% greater in individuals fed E2 than from individuals fed the control (C) diet (10.0 ± 1.1 vs 6.5 ± 0.7, respectively; P < 0.05). Individuals fed E2, P4, E2/P4, and P4 in combination with F had significantly smaller oocytes (P < 0.005) than individuals fed C. The volume fraction occupied by nutritive phagocytes in ovarian tubules from individuals fed E2/P4 or P4 were significantly larger than the volume fraction occupied by nutritive phagocytes from individuals fed C, indicating that E2 and 5α-reduced progestins may promote nutrient allocation to nutritive phagocytes. Although oocytes from the individuals fed T alone were significantly smaller than those fed T in combination with F, oocytes from individuals in both treatments were significantly larger compared to oocytes from individuals fed C. These data suggest that upon removal of 5α-reduced androgens, T is able to promote an increase in oocyte diameters. In contrast, the mean testis index was 56% greater in individuals fed P4 than in individuals fed C (8.9 ± 0.6 vs 5.7 ± 0.9, respectively; P < 0.05); the testis index did not increase in individuals fed P4/F, suggesting that 5α-reduced progestins stimulate testicular growth. Testes growth in the presence of 5α-reduced progestins was accomplished by significant increases in the volume fraction occupied by nutritive phagocytes and by a significant reduction in the volume fraction occupied by spermatogenic columns in testicular tubules. These data further indicate that 5α-reduced progestins (or 5α-reduced androgens) may inhibit spermatogenic column formation. In conclusion, E2 stimulated ovarian growth but inhibited oocyte growth, whereas T had no affect on ovarian growth but promoted oocyte growth in L. variegatus. We hypothesize that the E2 (or E2 metabolites) and/or 5α-reduced androgens in combination with T regulate oocyte growth in the echinoid L. variegatus. In addition, 5α-reduced progestins promoted nutrient accumulation in nutritive phagocytes within the ovaries and the testes. Furthermore, 5α-reduced progestins stimulated growth of the testes and inhibited spermatogenic column formation, suggesting that 5α-reduced progestins regulate nutrient accumulation into nutritive phagocytes and spermatogenic column formation in L. variegatus. The differences in estrogen effects between echinoids and asteroids may be related to differences in gonad morphology and, ultimately, the differences in cellular signalling pathways (paracrine vs endocrine). The cladoceran Diaphanosoma celebensis Stingelin is reported on for the first time from Indian waters (Mandovi estuary, Goa). Amictic females were maintained in the laboratory (temperature 24 ± 1 °C and salinity 17 psu) for three successive generations in order to follow the parthenogenetic reproductive behaviour, growth, survival and neonate production. The mean life span and body length of adult females in the three generations showed some variations and ranged from 9 to 12.5 d and 842 to 932 μm, respectively. The mean length of the neonates produced also varied (283 to 446 μm) in the three generations. Cladoceran preference for three phytoplankton food sources, i.e. Isochrysis galbana (Parke), Chaetoceros calcitrans (Paulsen) and Tetraselmis gracilis (Kylin), was determined. Growth was faster in the initial stage with all three diets but slowed down in later life. Increased food concentrations resulted in higher neonate production but reduced the life span of females. However, long-term feeding experiments revealed that the percentage survival was high with I. galbana and low with C. calcitrans. Received: 23 June 1999 / Accepted: 20 September 1999  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to determine the effect of four algal diets (Corallina spp., Gelidium pristoides, Ulva rigida and an equal volume mixture of these seaweeds) on growth and reproduction of the South African gastropod Turbo sarmaticus Linnaeus, 1758. The best growth rate of juveniles (up to 13.8 mm shell length and 34.26 g wet body weight increase in 12 months), reproductive fitness of mature specimens (gonad index up to 33%) and energy reserves (up to 4.76 mg glycogen/100 mg foot tissue) were achieved when T. sarmaticus was fed U. rigida or a mixed diet. In addition, the gonad index of individuals fed these diets was almost twice that of similar-sized field specimens. Juveniles fed Corallina spp. only, grew very little (only 2.4 mm shell length and 4.23 g wet body weight increase in 12 months). The reproductive fitness of adults fed on such a diet was also poor (gonad index <4.5%) and energy reserves were low (<3.5 mg glycogen/100 mg foot tissue). Along the southeastern coast of South Africa, T. sarmaticus has a distinct reproductive cycle with gametogenesis occurring from March/April until August/September, whilst maturity (gonad index = 15%) was maintained until December, after which spawning occurred until March. Early development was examined, under various salinities, for two sympatric nereidid polychaetes, Hediste japonica and H. diadroma, which participated in a simultaneous reproductive swarming in an estuary of the Omuta-gawa River in Ariake Sea, Japan. The eggs of both species were isotonic to the medium of 27.5–30 psu salinity. The egg diameter in the isotonic salinity was 180–205 μm in H. japonica, and 130–160 μm in H. diadroma. Successful development of most embryos was observed in a salinity range of 22.5–30 psu in both species, while successful fertilization occurred in wider ranges of salinity, i.e., 10–34 psu in H. japonica and 10 to 30 psu in H. diadroma. In both species, free-swimming larval life started from the indistinct hatching of trochophores out of a jelly layer capsule. The lecithotrophic development appeared to run to the 4-setiger nectochaetes in H. japonica, while to 3-setiger nectochaetes in H. diadroma, resulting in a shorter pelagic larval life in H. japonica. In a comparison of larval morphology among Hediste species, we found a definite negative correlation between the prostomium width, which represents the larval size and depends on egg size, and relative length of chaetae to the prostomium width: the relative length of chaetae was the longest in H. diadroma (with the smallest egg size and long pelagic life), intermediate in H. japonica (intermediate egg size, short pelagic life), and the shortest in H. atoka (largest egg size, no true pelagic life). We also examined the possibility of hybridization between H. japonica and H. diadroma through cross-insemination experiments. The gametes of the two species were reciprocally compatible, and viable hybrid offspring were produced by the laboratory crosses. The hybrid larvae expressed intermediate phenotypes, but with a greater maternal influence in characteristics such as the relative length of chaetae and the lecithotrophic larval duration.  相似文献

At specific locations within the Baltic Sea, thermoclines and haloclines can create rapid spatial and temporal changes in temperature (T) and salinity (S) exceeding 10°C and 9 psu with seasonal ranges in temperature exceeding 20°C. These wide ranges in abiotic factors affect the distribution and abundance of Baltic Sea copepods via species-specific, physiological-based impacts on vital rates. In this laboratory study, we characterized the influence of T and S on aspects of reproductive success and naupliar survival of a southwestern Baltic population of Temora longicornis (Copepoda: Calanoida). First, using ad libitum feeding conditions, we measured egg production (EP, no. of eggs female−1 day−1) at 12 different temperatures between 2.5 and 24°C, observing the highest mean EP at 16.9°C (12 eggs female−1 day−1). Next, the effect of S on EP and hatching success (HS, %) was quantified at 12°C for cohorts that had been acclimated to either 8, 14, 20 or 26 psu and tested at each of five salinities (8, 14, 20, 26 and 32 psu). The mean EP was highest for (and maximum EP similar among) 14, 20 and 26 psu cohorts when tested at their acclimation salinity whereas EP was lower at other salinities. For adults reared at 8 psu, a commonly encountered salinity in Baltic surface waters, EP was relatively low at all test salinities—a pattern indicative of osmotic stress. When incubated at 12°C and 15 different salinities between 0 and 34 psu, HS increased asymptotically with increasing S and was maximal (82.6–84.3%) between 24 and 26 psu. However, HS did depend upon the adult acclimation salinity. Finally, the 48-h survival of nauplii hatched and reared at 14 psu at one of six different temperatures (10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20°C) was measured after exposure to a novel salinity (either 7 or 20 psu). Upon exposure to 7 psu, 48-h naupliar mortality increased with increasing temperature, ranging from 26.7% at 10°C to 63.2% at 20°C. In contrast, after exposure to 20 psu, mortality was relatively low at all temperatures (1.7% at 10°C and ≤26.7% for all other temperatures). An intra-specific comparison of EP for three different T. longicornis populations revealed markedly different temperature optima and clearly demonstrated the negative impact of brackish (Baltic) salinities. Our results provide estimates of reproductive success and early survival of T. longicornis to the wide ranges of temperatures and salinities that will aid ongoing biophysical modeling examining climate impacts on this species within the Baltic Sea.  相似文献

Since the early 1980s, the eelgrass, Zostera marina L., population in the saline Lake Gevelingen, The Netherlands, is rapidly declining. An earlier study, in which long-term data on eelgrass coverage in this former estuary were correlated with several environmental variables, showed only one significant correlation: coverage was positively related to water column silicon levels. In addition, a negative correlation with salinity was observed, but this was not significant. In the present study, the effect of silicon and the effect of salinity on the development of Z. marina were investigated experimentally. Enhancement of dissolved silicon concentrations in the water did not stimulate Z. marina above-ground production or an increase in final above- and below-ground biomass. The highly significant correlation between eelgrass coverage and water column silicon levels, thus, remains to be explained. The results of the growth experiments did, however, demonstrate a clear effect of salinity on Z. marina growth. Plants cultured at 22 psu showed a higher production of shoots and leaves, resulting in more above-ground biomass, than plants grown at 32 psu. In addition, below-ground biomass was also higher at 22 psu. Measurements of chlorophyll a fluorescence, performed with a PAM-fluorometer, indicated a reduction of photosynthesis in the high-salinity treatments. Thus, low salinity stimulates development of Z. marina from Lake Grevelingen. Eelgrass from such a historically estuarine area may be more sensitive to high salinities than other, more marine populations. Recovery of the autochthonous eelgrass population is expected to be favoured when the estuarine conditions of the seagrass area are re-established, or when restoration programmes are carried out with allochthonous ecotypes that are less sensitive to high salinities. Kinetic measurements of metal accumulation in two marine macroalgae   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
We measured the uptake kinetics of four metals (Cd, Cr, Se and Zn) in two marine macroalgae (the green alga Ulva lactuca and the red alga Gracilaria blodgettii). Metal uptake generally displayed a linear pattern with increasing exposure time. With the exception of Cr, which exhibited comparable uptake rate constants at different concentrations, uptake rate constants of Cd, Se and Zn decreased with increasing metal concentration, indicating that the seaweeds had a higher relative uptake at lower metal concentration. Uptake of Cd and Zn was higher in U. lactuca than in G. blodgettii, whereas uptake of Cr and Se was comparable between the two species. Only Cd and Zn uptake in U. lactuca was significantly inhibited by dark exposure. A decrease in salinity from 28 to 10‰ enhanced the uptake of Cd, Cr, Se and Zn in U. lactuca 1.9-, 3.0-, 3.6-, and 1.9-fold, respectively. In G. blodgettii, Cd uptake increased twofold when salinity was decreased from 28 to 10‰, whereas uptake of Cr and Zn was not significantly affected by salinity change. The calculated depuration rate constants of metals in U. lactuca were 0.01 d−1 for Cd, 0.05 to 0.08 d−1 for Cr, 0.14 to 0.16 d−1 for Se, and 0.12 to 0.15 d−1 for Zn, and were relatively independent of the metal body burden in the algae. The predicted bioconcentration factor was 3 × 104 for Cd, 2 × 103 for Cr, 40 to 150 for Se, and 1 to 2 × 104 for Zn in U. lactuca. Our kinetic study suggested that U. lactuca would be a good biomonitor of Cr and Zn contamination in coastal waters. Received: 14 September 1998 / Accepted: 29 May 1999  相似文献

The effects of salinity, temperature, and pH variations on growth, survival, and photosynthetic rates of the seagrass Halophila johnsonii Eiseman were examined. Growth and survival responses to salinity were characterized by aquarium experiments in which plants were exposed to seven different salinity treatments (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 psu) during 15 days. Photosynthetic behavior was assessed for short-term salinity exposures (1 or 20 h) by incubation experiments in biological oxygen demand (BOD) bottles and by measuring photosynthesis versus irradiance (PI) responses in an oxygen electrode chamber. In the bottle experiments the possible effects of interactions between salinity and temperature (15, 25, and 35°C) or pH (5, 6, 7, and 8.2) were also examined. Growth and survival of H. johnsonii were significantly affected by salinity, with maximum rates obtained at 30 psu. Salinity also altered the parameters of the PI curves. Light-saturated photosynthesis (P max) and the photosynthetic efficiency at subsaturating light (α) increased significantly up to an optimum of 40 psu, decreasing again at the highest salinities. Dark respiration rates and compensating irradiance (I c) showed minimum values at 40 and 50 psu, while light-saturation point (I k) was maximum at 30–50 psu. An interaction between salinity and temperature was not found although an increase of temperature alone produced an increase in α, P max, respiration rates, and I k. An interaction between salinity and pH was only found in the P max response: P max increased with pH=5 at 30 psu. In addition, reducing the pH increased α significantly. In the BOD bottles experiment a significant reduction in the dark respiration with decreasing pH was observed, but the opposite trend was observed in the photosynthetic rate. These results suggest that the endemic seagrass H. johnsonii could be negatively affected by hypo- or hypersalinity conditions, although salinity changes did not seem to alter the tolerance of this species to other environmental factors, such as temperature or pH.  相似文献

The effects of cadmium exposure and dietary status on cadmium accumulation, fatty acid (FA) content and profiles were investigated in two colour forms of the shore crab Carcinus maenas. Groups of shore crabs were either starved or fed with blue mussels, Mytilus edulis, during a 40 d exposure period to 2 or 6 μM Cd2+ (as CdCl2). Starved green individuals accumulated more cadmium in haemolymph and hepatopancreas than did red crabs and green crabs fed during the experiments. In the red colour form, no difference in cadmium accumulation was observed between starved and fed individuals. In both colour forms, hepatopancreas contained more FA than gills and muscle. The FAs often present in the largest amounts in the tissues were 16:0, 16:1ω7, 18:1ω7, 18:1ω9, 20:4ω6, 20:5ω3 and 22:6ω3. However, saturated (SAFA) and mono-unsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) were dominant in hepatopancreas, whereas poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were dominant in gills and muscles. At the beginning of the experiment, the total FA content in the hepatopancreas was 111.6 mg g−1 (dry weight) for red crabs and 78.4 mg g−1 for green shore crabs. During the experiment, however, the FA content decreased in red crabs. This decrease was more pronounced for starved individuals than for fed individuals. Also, the decrease in FA content was more pronounced in crabs exposed to 6 μM cadmium compared to crabs exposed to 2 μM or crabs not exposed to cadmium. No change in FA content was observed in green shore crabs, irrespective of diet and cadmium exposure. For both colour forms, no change in FA content was observed for gills and muscle. In red crabs, a decrease was observed for all FAs in the hepatopancreas. This decrease, however, was more pronounced for SAFAs and MUFAs than for PUFAs, indicating that the metabolism of FAs during starvation and cadmium exposure is selective. The experiments indicate that green colour forms of shore crabs are more tolerant of natural stress such as starvation and anthropogenic stress, e.g. cadmium exposure, than are red colour forms of shore crabs. The reproductive biology of the alfonsino Beryx splendens was studied by histological examinations, gonadosomatic index and macroscopic scales of maturation of a large sample of gonads. Alfonsino is a gonochoric species. The size-frequency distribution of the sex ratio was bimodal and considered to be due to size dimorphism. In New Caledonia, the breeding period of this species occurs during the southern summer, with a peak in December to January. The spawning stage is attained at a minimum fork length of 28 cm for females and 33 cm for males. The size at which 50% of the population attain sexual maturity (FL50) is 33.2 cm for females and 34.5 cm for males. Maximum potential fecundity is estimated to lie between 270 000 to 675 000 eggs for fish between 34 and 40 cm in fork length. It was possible to differentiate vegetative zones, in which juvenile alfonsino grow until they reach maturity, from reproductive zones (fishing grounds) which are inhabited by mature individuals. The larvae and juveniles could be carried from the reproductive zone to the vegetative zone by currents in an oceanic eddy system. Received: 26 April 1996 / Accepted: 20 September 1996  相似文献

The reproductive strategies of two gammaridean amphipod species, Gammarus wilkitzkii and Apherusa glacialis, that permanently inhabit the Arctic sea ice were investigated. G. wilkitzkii reaches sexual maturity at an age of 2 years and produces 128 ± 54 eggs fem.−1 yr−1. Mating takes place during fall and winter, and the development of the large eggs (0.60 to 0.80 mm diam.) lasts 6 to 7 months. The sex ratio of G. wilkitzkii was dominated by males in a proportion of 1.5:1. In vivo studies showed that juveniles are released in batches from the brood pouches of the females during April and May. A. glacialis reaches sexual maturity at the age of 1 year and produces 555 ± 151 eggs fem.−1 yr−1. The eggs are between 0.18 and 0.23 mm in diameter, and are the smallest known for gammaridean amphipods. Eggs are kept in packages of two to eight in the brood pouches of females. The sex ratio of A. glacialis was dominated by females in a proportion of 3:1. The high fecundity of both amphipod species, the release of juveniles in batches over a period of time, a high proportion of females (A. glacialis), and an elongated life-span with multiple spawnings (G. wilkitzkii) are discussed as possible adaptations to the specific and highly variable conditions under Arctic sea ice. The caterpillars of Eucheira socialis westwoodi cooperatively spin and maintain a hollow silken nest and an elaborate network of silken foraging trails on their host plant, madrone (Arbutus spp.: Ericaceae). Nests typically contain several hundred larvae. Two populations are known to harbor a sex ratio distorter. The primary sex ratio in these two populations for four generations has been exceedingly male biased (64–79% male). Lepidoptera larvae are easily sexed using external morphology, allowing us to uniquely mark male and female larvae and to assemble larval groups of particular sex ratios. We report here the results of experiments on sex-specific larval behavior and physiology and the effect of colony sex ratio on individual behavior. We found that male larvae spent more time spinning silk on the nest and less time feeding than female larvae. Males were the first to emerge from the nest and the first to venture out along trails to feed. Male-biased nests had a significantly greater amount of silk deposited on their surfaces than female-biased nests. In the field, male-biased nests produced heavier male and female pupae than female-biased nests. Male and female larvae in 75% male nests became active earlier than males and females in other sex ratio treatments. To assess the effects of both temperature and food ration on gonad growth and oogenesis of the green sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (O.F. Müller), individuals collected December 1996 (winter experiment) and June 1997 (summer experiment) were maintained for 3 months in one of four experimental treatments: (1) 3 °C and fed ad libitum (high ration), (2) 3 °C and fed one-seventh of the maximum ration (low ration), and (3) 12 °C and fed the high ration; (4) 12 °C and fed the low ration. All individuals were fed an artificial diet and exposed to only 1 h of light every day. At the end of both experiments, mean gonad indices of sea urchins fed the high ration had increased significantly (11–24% and 6–19% in the winter and summer experiments, respectively), while the gonad indices of individuals fed the low ration did not change. At the high ration (both experiments), the increase in gonad index of sea urchins occurred primarily as the result of a significant increase in the mass of nutritive phagocytes, as revealed by histological analyses. Primary oocytes were significantly larger in individuals held at 3 °C than at 12 °C throughout the winter experiment, regardless of food ration; during the summer experiment, primary oocytes were significantly larger in individuals receiving the high ration, regardless of the temperature at which they were held. These results suggest that: (1) food availability is the most important factor regulating energy storage and the relative size of gonads throughout the year, (2) temperature affects the rate of growth and maturation of primary oocytes during the later stages of oogenesis, and (3) once gametogenesis has been initiated, mature ova will be produced, even under conditions of low food availability. Conditions of high food availability in summer and low temperature in winter would thus favor reproductive output in sea urchin populations.
