Experiments using 14C sugars were carried out on the holothurian Holothuria scabra Jäger, in order to assess the role of its perivisceral fluid in the translocation and transportation of dissolved organic materials. The results obtained indicate that the perivisceral fluid plays a significant part. Rates of 14C glucose, fructose and sucrose uptake were followed in major tissues such as the alimentary canal, haemal system, respiratory tree and body wall. The monosaccharides are absorbed more intensively by digestive and haemal systems, the disaccharide by respiratory tree and body wall. It is, therefore, presumed that tissues in H. scabra selectively absorb sugars depending on their metabolic activity.  相似文献

Studies on the nutritional transport of holothurians have failed to delineate the role of the amoebocytes as well as the haemal system in this function. Autoradiographic studies have been carried out on tissues of animals injected with 14C glucose in order to localise the incorporation of the labelled sugar in tissues such as the alimentary canal, haemal system, respiratory tree and the body wall. In all tissues the amoebocytes were clearly labelled, indicating a key role in the transportation of sugars. Furthermore, it has been shown that sugar also enters the tissues by diffusion. It is interesting that the haemal system appears to transport glucose more rapidly than other tissues as indicated by the heavy labelling.  相似文献

Understanding concealment behaviour of marine animals is vital for population surveys and captive-release programmes. The commercially valuable sea cucumber Holothuria scabra Jaeger 1833 (Holothuroidea) can display a diel burying cycle, but is it widely predictable? Circadian burying of captive H. scabra juveniles, and both juveniles and adults in the wild, was examined in New Caledonia. Groups of ten cultured juveniles in mesh chambers in a tank were monitored for 24 h. Small juveniles (1–5 g) displayed an expected diel cycle of epibenthic foraging in the afternoon and night then burial in sediments in the morning. Burial was related significantly to both light and temperature in combination. Similar groups of juveniles were handled once or three times a day for 1 week then frequency of emergence during another week was compared to unhandled controls. Handling stress, whether occasional or frequent, significantly suppressed the frequency of their afternoon emergence from sediments for 4 days. In a coastal seagrass bed, burial and emergence of H. scabra were monitored during days of opposing tidal cycles in three seasons. Adults seldom buried during the day except in the cool season. At that site, most small hatchery-produced H. scabra juveniles were buried during most of the day, while larger juveniles showed little diurnal burying. This study underscores that the circadian behaviours of marine animals can exhibit substantial spatial variation, may be absent at certain sites or seasons, and can be mediated by a complexity of factors that vary over short timescales.  相似文献

This work analyzes bacterial diversity of sediments transiting through the gut of Holothuria scabra which is an important bioturbator in tropical shallow waters. This edible holothurian species has a social and economic importance for coastal populations in many developing countries. Bacterial biodiversity was analyzed by sequencing the 16S rRNA of bacterial cultures and clones. DAPI and FISH methods were used to determine and compare the number of bacteria found in the various gut compartments. A total of 116 phylotypes belonging to the γ-Proteobacteria (60.5 %), α-Proteobacteria (24.5 %), Bacteroidetes (6 %), Actinobacteria (2.75 %), Fusobacteria (1.75 %), Firmicutes (1.75 %), Cyanobacteria (1.75 %) and δ-Proteobacteria (1 %) were identified. The number of bacteria is significantly greater (1.5×) in the foregut than in the ambient sediments. The number of bacteria significantly decreases in the midgut and remains stable until defecation. Some γ-Proteobacteria, especially Vibrio, are less affected by digestion than other bacterial taxa. The season has an impact on the bacterial diversity found in the sediments transiting through the gut: in the dry season, γ-Proteobacteria are the most abundant taxon, while α-Proteobacteria dominate in the rainy season. Vibrio is the most frequent genus with some well-known opportunistic pathogens like V. harveyi, V. alginolyticus and V. proteolyticus. Findings show that sediment-associated microbial communities are significantly modified by H. scabra during their transit through the gut which supports the view that holothurians play a substantial role in the structuring of bacterial communities at the sediment–seawater interface.  相似文献

Over a 3-year period (1996-1998), reproduction of the commercial sea cucumber Holothuria scabra (Jaeger, 1833) was investigated in the Solomon Islands to determine the spawning pattern and whether gametogenesis is continuous or seasonal. The gonad consisted of a single cohort of tubules that developed uniformly. Macroscopic examination of the gonads revealed that mature gametes were present throughout the year. Individuals with gonads at different stages of maturity were present in most samples. Partly spawned gonads were prevalent in females, whereas mature gonads were prevalent in males. The time at which the peak gonad index was recorded differed among years. Although gametogenesis was continuous, with a potential for prolonged gamete release, a period of enhanced spawning occurred during the dry season, from September to December. Maximum gonad indices were reached prior to and during this period of enhanced spawning. Histology revealed that gametogenesis reinitiated in partly spawned gonads, resulting in the presence of gametes at different stages of development in the gonad. The uniform growth of gonad tubules indicated that H. scabra does not conform to the progressive tubule recruitment model described for holothurian oogenesis. Continuous reproduction in H. scabra and prolonged availability of mature gametes would facilitate use of this species for aquaculture.  相似文献

Monthly samples of gonads of 3 common species of intertidal trochids, Monodonta lineata (da Costa), Gibbula umbilicalis (da Costa) and G. cineraria (L.) were fixed for examination by light microscopy. Numbers and proportions of immature and mature oocytes in sections of ovaries were determined. In M. lineata and G. umbilicalis, the annual reproductive cycles were very similar, the testis and ovary of both species being empty brown structures from September to January/February, when gametogenesis began and the gonads began to swell and turn green in both sexes. As ripening continued, the ovary remained green in G. umbilicalis, but in M. lineata turned greygreen by the end of May. The testis of both species changed, to yellowish in G. umbilicalis and creamy-pink in M. lineata. Spawning occurred throughout summer and early autumn, and the gonads reverted to their former empty state. These changes were matched by the increase and subsequent decrease in proportion of ripe oocytes in the gonad. Some ripe oocytes are not shed during the spawning season, but no evidence of cytolysis of such oocytes was found. In G. cineraria, in contrast, the ovary remained green and swollen and the testis remained creamy-white and packed with sperm throughout the year. The proportion of ripe to unripe oocytes in the ovary fluctuated for the entire sampling period, and did not indicate the time of spawning. In the testis of all three species, spermatogonia were rarely seen, and spermatid stages were uncommon.  相似文献

Two allopatric populations of Cardium edule and two of C. glaucum were sampled over a period of 16 months and their gonad maturity cycles compared by histological methods. The onset of both spermatogenesis and oogenesis in C. edule took place between September and October; in C. glaucum it was slightly later, between October and November. Development of the gonads continued slowly throughout the winter, C. glaucum developing marginally faster than C. edule. Maturation accelerated in April and May, with the gonads of both species becoming fully ripe in late May and early June. Spawning of the two species approximately coincided at all the localities investigated. Spawning in C. edule was better coordinated than in C. glaucum. Transplanting cockles of one species to the typical habitat of the other did not appreciably alter the spawning period. The separation of spawning periods in sympatric associations of the two cockles is discussed.  相似文献

The dendrochirote holothurian Aslia lefevrei (Barrois) is locally and densely aggregated (>70 individuals m-2) in Galway Bay, on the west coast of Ireland. It has a discrete, relatively short breeding period from the end of February to the beginning of April, with peak activity in March. The sexes are separate and the single gonad, consisting of numerous tubules (100 to 800), lies in the anterior coelom. Both gonad index values and histological observations indicate that gametogenesis resumes in June/July after a brief post-spawned resting period. Little oocyte growth and sperm production occurs over the warm summer months when the holothurian is actively feeding. Gonad index values, however, increase rapidly during this period and reach high values by early winter without concomitant increases in maturity indices. This is subsequently followed by slight reductions in the gonad indices, before reaching peak values in February. It is suggested that this is probably due to the initial build-up and subsequent assimilation of storage products in the gonad, the development of gametogenic products and the frequent assimilation thereafter of unwanted ova. Spawning generally takes between 5 and 60 min, with the entire contents of the gonad rarely being shed in a single release. During this process, the holothurian raises its anterior end and, with the extended tentacles close together, emits a stream of gametes from the genital pore in the mid-dorsal line. Laboratory experiments and general observations indicate that increased temperature and low light levels may influence spawning behaviour.Contribution No. 248 to the School of Marine Sciences, University College Galway, Ireland  相似文献

Certain phases of the ecology of a sea cucumber (Cucumaria pseudocurata Deichmann, 1938) population at Shell Beach, Sonoma County, California (USA), were investigated. The sea cucumber is a brooder, lays large (1 mm diameter) yolky eggs, which undergo direct development. It forms large aggregations in the rocky intertidal zone, extending from the lower boundary of the Mytilus californianus beds to about zero tide-level. The gonad cycle was followed from September, 1970 to January, 1972. Spawning occurred in January, 1971 and January, 1972. The holothurians produce from 1 to as many as 340 eggs, depending on the size of the individual; they completely spawn-out in a few days. Hatching takes place about 1 month after egg laying. The main sources of mortality are predation by the sea star Pycnopodia helianthoides and wave action. Survival of the young is negatively correlated with density of the aggregation. C. pseudocurata increases in weight 10 to 30 fold in the first year, but much more slowly in later years. Individuals live perhaps 5 years or more, and do not become reproductive until about the third year. Dispersal is accomplished by the young being washed away to a suitable new habitat. The upper range of the intertidal distribution is determined by exposure to air, and the lower range by P. helianthoides predation.Contribution No. 1 of the Bodega Marine Sciences Association.  相似文献

The reproductive cycles of two closely related calcareous sponges, Clathrina coriacea (Montagu, 1818) and C. blanca (Miklucho-Maclay, 1868), were studied to determine whether they were reproductively isolated. Populations of both species were sampled at Santa Catalina Island, California, USA, for 2.5 years. The reproductive period is from July to October in C. coriacea, and from April to August in C. blanca. Seawater temperature and habitat influence reproduction in both species. Fragmentation occurs in C. coriacea in the summer, while asexual reproduction by means of budding is seen in C. blanca throughout the year. The results of the study confirm that the two sponges are separate species.  相似文献

We collected data on plasma levels of testosterone+5a-dihydrotestosterone (T+DHT) and corticosterone (CORT) from adult female green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) from southern Queensland during distinct stages of their reproductive cycle. Those females capable of breeding in a given year had elevated plasma steroid levels (T+DHT 0.91ǂ.08; CORT 1.05ǂ.29 ng/ml), associated with follicular development, until courtship began in October. At the beginning of the nesting season in November plasma levels of CORT were related to when the female first nested (r2=0.06; F=10.45; P=0.01). However, they were not correlated with the number of clutches a female laid in that season (F=3.65; P=0.08). We repeatedly sampled 23 turtles over the nesting season and profiled changes in steroids immediately following oviposition of each clutch. Levels of T+DHT (range 0.41-0.58 ng/ml) and CORT (range 2.13-2.81 ng/ml) were similar through the early stages of the nesting season and inter-nesting period, and declined to near basal levels (T+DHT 0.37ǂ.03 and CORT 1.85-ng/ml) following the last clutch for the season. Steroid hormone levels were also low (T+DHT 0.38ǂ.16; CORT 0.46ǂ.21 ng/ml) in four independent post-breeding (atretic) females; samples for these females were taken at a time when body condition was presumably at the lowest for the season. Subtle changes in the nesting environment, such as variation in nesting habitat or the time of night that nesting occurred, were associated with a small and slow CORT increase. We suggest CORT is increased in nesting females to assist in lipid transfer to prepare the ovarian follicles and/or the reproductive organs for ovulation.  相似文献

The reproductive cycles of Tonicella lineata Wood and T. insignis Reeve are examined in relation to changes in physical and biotic conditions in different locations in British Columbia, Canada, over a 3 to 4 year period. A clearly annual reproductive cycle is displayed by both species, and in any one location and year reproductive events in the two species are similar. There is a progressive increase in the size of the gonads starting in the summer and continuing to mid-winter. Although no one environmental factor is likely to be correlated with this prolonged period of gonadal development, various phases of the annual temperature and photoperiod cycles do appear to coincide with particular phases of gametogenesis (such as gonial proliferation, vitellogenesis and gonadal maturation), and thus could act as external cues. There isa synchronous drop in gonadal size in T. lineata and T. insignis in the spring, as a result of spawning. The exact timing and abruptness of this event in different years can not be accounted for on the basis of temperature. However, new correlative data are presented to add further support to the hypothesis previously presented that the spring phytoplankton is the cue for natural spawning (Himmelman, 1975). Temperature may inhibit spawning in T. lineata if conditions are unseasonably cold.  相似文献

Several morphological, physiological and ecological experiments on the general biology of small juveniles (drained body weight=0.09 to 17.34 g) of Actinopyga echinites (Jäger 1833) (Echinodermata, Holothuroidea) were conducted between August 1991 and July 1992 at Bise reef flat, Okinawa, southern Japan. Supplementary experiments were carried out at the laboratory. The experiments were designed with a view to potential stock enhancement projects of A. echinites and other commercially exploited tropical sea cucumbers of the coral reef zone. During the enclosure experiments, the average percentage of drained body weight to fresh body weight of the juveniles was 48.3%. The specimens displayed a growth rate of 1500% during the 11-mo period. Their drained body weight increased from 0.87 to 12.82 g. The juveniles' internal and skeletal morphology differed considerably from the morphology of adult A. echinites. Two new types of skeletal spicules were discovered. Individual growth of all spicule types monitored differed notably, and shrinkage was observed for the two newly discovered types. Relative frequency of the spicule types within the skeletons changed with increasing body weights of the individuals. The juveniles of A. echinites displayed a strong habitat preference for plate-like substrate types such as eroded limestone or dead coral plates. Skeletons of Acropora spp. were accepted at a much lower rate. Weight-frequency distributions of the specimens on varying substrate types and between various times of the day showed significant differences. Cryptic behaviour of the juveniles was observed at all times of the day. Natural mortality of the holothurians, excluding predation and minor dislodgement effects, was low at 0.6% mo–1. When predation effects were introduced to the experiments, mortality reached a rate of 0.3% mo–1. The average percentage of predation effects within the natural mortality total was 76.8%. Juvenile A. echinites exhibited a maximum short-distance migration speed of 9 cm h–1. This was two orders of magnitude slower than the speed observed in adults (900 cm h–1) when differences in total body length were taken into consideration. The holothurians had two activity peaks during the 4-h periods monitored, around sunrise and sunset, respectively.  相似文献

From the seasonal changes in the amount of semen in the sperm ducts of males and in the fullness of spermatheca of females, the copulation season of Gaetice depressus in central Japan is considered to approximately coincide with the oviposition season, from March to October. The sperm ducts of all the large males examined contained semen, the amount of which did not vary obviously with stages of the molt cycle or with seasons. The genital apertures of females were normally covered with calcified immobile opercula in this species. The opercula decalcified after molting and again shortly before oviposition, and retained mobility for 1 to 3 d. Shortly after molting, soft-shelled females with mobile opercula did not have well-developed ovaries nor did they copulate with males even if they had a chance. In contrast, all of the hard-shelled females with mobile opercula had well-developed ovaries, and laid eggs within 2 d after the decalcification of opercula regardless of the occurrence of copulation. Laboratory experiments showed that the females normally copulated with males before oviposition. Crabs examined in this study were collected from Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan between March 1988 and March 1989.  相似文献

The northern range limit of the intertidal limpet Lottia scabra is Cape Arago, Oregon (43°N), where adult survival is excellent, the population is small (<300), and recruitment is low; the range limit may be set by limited recruitment. Between June 2012 and March 2013, 25 sites from the middle of the species range (33°N) to Cape Arago were sampled and population size frequency distributions, densities, and nearest neighbor distances were compared to the amount of rocky and sandy shore and kelp bed size. North and south of 37°N, the densities of new recruits averaged 22 and 86 m?2, respectively. This shift was associated with the range limit of Macrocystis pyrifera kelp beds; we hypothesize that slower currents in M. pyrifera beds may limit larval dispersal leading to higher recruitment. North and south of 40°N, adult density averaged <1 and 458 m?2, respectively, with the species absent from many sites to the north. This shift was associated with a sharp drop in the amount of rocky shoreline and an increase in uninhabitable sandy shore. Near the northern range limit, >80 % of the individuals were solitary and may be unable to spawn successfully. Recruitment at Cape Arago was infrequent and likely due to self-recruitment. This study suggests that the range limit was set by the absence of M. pyrifera and too little rocky shore leading to high larval wastage, low settlement, low population densities, and, due to an Allee effect, very small effective population sizes.  相似文献

The sea cucumber Holothuria arenacava was discovered in the Mombasa marine reserve in 1997 and described by Samyn et al. (2001). The reproductive biology of this holothurian was investigated in order to (1) characterize the reproductive pattern, (2) examine the relationship among environmental parameters including temperature, light and lunar period, and (3) examine the relationship between the reproductive pattern and feeding of this new species. The gonad index method and microscopic examination of gonads was used to analyze samples collected for a period of 13 months. H. arenacava displayed an annual reproductive cycle with gametogenesis commencing in July during the south-east monsoons, when temperature and light intensity are lowest along the Kenyan coast. Gonad growth peaked in February–March at the end of the north-east monsoons when temperatures and light reach their annual maxima along the Kenyan coast. The higher correlation between light intensity and gonad growth (r=93) than temperature (r=0.71), coupled with the fact that temperatures continued to drop for a month after gametogenesis had already commenced, suggests that light intensity and not temperature is the cue for the onset of gametogenesis in this species. Spawning was synchronized between females and males and occurred during a short period between March and May (inter-monsoonal period) when both temperature and light intensity decrease along the Kenyan coast. Male and female gonad indices showed significant variation with lunar day and no lunar periodicity was observed in this sea cucumber. The sex ratio of the population of H. arenacava was skewed towards significantly more females than males, and females were significantly larger and had larger gonads and gonad indices than males. These life history strategies including spawning during a short discrete period, more and larger females that have larger gonads (i.e., typically more fecund), and spawning just prior to the peak in phytoplankton concentrations, a time that is probably more favorable for larval development, may serve to increase the reproductive success of this sea cucumber.  相似文献

Since Mytilus edulis L. is a biomass dominant in the Baltic much interest is focused on the ecology of the species. In this paper an attempt is made to quantitatively cover the reproductive cycle of a Baltic M. edulis population in order to provide data for energy flow models and to discuss aspects of recruitment in this species. Histological preparations of gonads showed that gametogenesis started with declining temperatures in autumn and proceeded very slowly through winter. At the beginning of March when food was supplied during the spring phytoplankton bloom, rapid maturation took place. This was also revealed by an increase in meat weight of the mussels. Only one spawning period was recorded, from the middle of May until the beginning of June, due to food being strongly limited to the population during the rest of the year. The length of the larval period was estimated as being 5 to 6 wk and settlement was registered from the end of June through July. In general the large annual variations found in the Baltic with regard to temperature and food abundance give rise to a more marked annual pattern in the reproductive cycle than is encountered in other seas. Fecundity was assessed for two populations from 4-and 15-m depths from studies covering two annual cycles of the changes in the relation of shell length — meat weight. The size-related fecundity was found to be equal in both populations and related to food abundance and not to growth or age. Fecundity, expressed as weight loss at spawning, ranged from 0% in 2-mm mussels and increased from 38 to 52% in 10-to 30-mm mussels. The fecundity as percentage of biomass in full-grown Baltic M. edulis is of similar magnitude as in full-grown mussels from other areas despite the smaller size of Baltic mussels. The reproductive output for the total 160 km2 research area was calculated as being 1 200 tons dry weight or 80% of the standing stock, which, due to the particular features of the Baltic M. edulis population probably represents the larger part of the total mussel production. This reproductive output, calculated as 8·107 eggs·m-2 and corresponding to 50% of the total annual zooplankton production, may thus consitute an important food source for herring larvae and carnivorous zooplankton. Recruitment was divided into two phases: (1) Recruitment of juveniles (=settlement of larvae), and (2) recruitment to breeding stock. Monitoring studies of settlement on ropes and the year round presence of high abundances of mussels <2 mm indicate that settlement is in excess of the demands for maintaining population size and that most settled mussels form a pool of competitively suppressed non-growing individuals. Not until death of an already established mussel will these become recruited to the breeding population. Thus recruitment is possible throughout the year which stabilizes the population and maintains it near the carrying capacity of the area with regard to food and space availability.  相似文献

Sea cucumbers are conspicuous organisms inhabiting almost all marine habitats across the globe. Despite their importance as effective consumers of detritus, little is known about their behavior. We studied organic matter (OM) consumption and nocturnal movement patterns of Holothuria sanctori through indoors assays and in situ experiments at shallow bottoms off Gran Canaria Island (Canary Islands, Spain). H. sanctori has a selective feeding toward high OM concentration sediments. Consumption of OM increased with OM availability, particularly during formation of the gonads. OM consumption did not differ in situ between two adjacent habitats arranged in mosaics: macroalgal beds and urchin-grazed “barrens.” Larger distances and fastest displacements were covered by H. sanctori during the end than the middle and start of the nighttime. Overall, we did not detect a clear “homing” behavior by H. sanctori, yet some individuals showed a fidelity for refuges when shelter availability was lacking.  相似文献

Previous works by the present authors have identified, in a qualitative fashion, the reproductive cycle of Pholoe minuta (Fabricius) in inner Galway (53°13.5N; 9°7W). This quantitative, histological study, carried out over the period late May 1981 to late April 1982, shows that P. minuta is polytelic (two to three annual spawnings in an individual's lifespan). Individuals become sexually mature for the first time when approaching 3 yr of age. Estimates were made of the size of the reproductively active population (47 to 49%), sex ratio (1:1), duration (10 to 11 mo) and pattern (unimodal) of gametogenesis and fecundity levels (210 198 eggs m-2). Maturation (mean oocyte size=85 m) and spawning (for 1 wk during late March through early April) were shown to be synchronised. Throughout oogenesis, follicle cells play an important role in binding together oocyte clusters, and desmosomal contacts are evident between oocyte and follicle cell plasmalemmas. No evidence for the synthesis of yolk precursors in the follicle cell cytoplasm was discovered. Oocytes are rich in Golgi apparatuses (yolk synthesising) and nuclear pores are numerous. Rough endoplasmic reticulum is distended in nature. Egg envelope development does not appear to commence until after the onset of vitellogenesis. Mature spermatozoa are of the primitive bullet-shaped type, with an unmodified acrosome. A possible method of elevation membrane formation is described.  相似文献

The boreo-mediterranean holothurian Aslia lefevrei (Barrois) occupies cryptic habitats from low-water mark to ca. 20 m. During the present work specimens were collected from the west coast of Ireland (February 1979 to August 1980), where A. lefevreiis a prominent element in two discrete epibenthic assemblages, and from the north-west of Spain (September 1981 to August 1982), where this holothurian is densely aggregated in association with raft cultivation of the mussel Mytilus edulis. Its reproductive cycle, spawning process, embryological development, settlement, and early growth rates have been documented by means of laboratory and field studies. Depending on geographic location, spawning in the wild occurs between January and May. Development to the gastrula takes some 3 to 4 d. Uniformly ciliated dipleurula/auricularia hatch 12 to 24 h after gastrulation. The pentactula stage is attained approximately 7 d after fertilization, following which the larva settles. Newly settled individuals utilize the five primary tentacles for both feeding and locomotion. With the advent of small numbers of podia in the ambulacral regions, two of the primary tentacles prolong their locomotory and anchorage capabilities while the remaining tentacles develop adult characteristics and function solely in feeding. Growth was followed for an estimated 30 mo period using length-frequency analyses. In the first year of life, A. lefevrei attain an average length of 3.4 cm; individuals on the sea floor can attain up to 18 cm, indicating a possible life expectancy of 10 yr or more.Contribution No. 301 from the School of Marine Sciences, University College Galway, Ireland  相似文献
