In late May, 2007, a drinking water crisis took place in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, China, following a massive bloom of the toxin
producing cyanobacteria Microcystis spp. in Lake Taihu, China’s third largest freshwater lake. Taihu was the city’s sole water supply, leaving approximately
two million people without drinking water for at least a week. This cyanobacterial bloom event began two months earlier than
previously documented for Microcystis blooms in Taihu. This was attributed to an unusually warm spring. The prevailing wind direction during this period caused
the bloom to accumulate at the shoreline near the intake of the water plant. Water was diverted from the nearby Yangtze River
in an effort to flush the lake of the bloom. However, this management action was counterproductive, because it produced a
current which transported the bloom into the intake, exacerbating the drinking water contamination problem. The severity of
this microcystin toxin containing bloom and the ensuing drinking water crisis were attributable to excessive nutrient enrichment;
however, a multi-annual warming trend extended the bloom period and amplified its severity, and this was made worse by unanticipated
negative impacts of water management. Long-term management must therefore consider both the human and climatic factors controlling
these blooms and their impacts on water supply in this and other large lakes threatened by accelerating eutrophication. 相似文献

Evaluation of leachate recirculation on nitrous oxide production in the Likang Landfill,China 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Landfill leachate recirculation is efficient in reducing the leachate quantity handled by a leachate treatment plant. However, after land application of leachate, nitrification and denitrification of the ammoniacal N becomes possible and the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) is produced. Lack of information on the effects of leachate recirculation on N2O production led to a field study being conducted in the Likang Landfill (Guangzhou, China) where leachate recirculation had been practiced for 8 yr. Monthly productions and fluxes of N2O from leachate and soil were studied from June to November 2000. Environmental and chemical factors regulating N2O production were also accessed. An impermeable top liner was not used at this site; municipal solid waste was simply covered by inert soil and compacted by bulldozers. A high N2O emission rate (113 mg m-2 h-1) was detected from a leachate pond purposely formed on topsoil within the landfill boundary after leachate irrigation. A high N2O level (1.09 micrograms L-1) was detected in a gas sample emitted from topsoil 1 m from the leachate pond. Nitrous oxide production from denitrification in leachate-contaminated soil was at least 20 times higher than that from nitrification based on laboratory incubation studies. The N2O levels emitted from leachate ponds were compared with figures reported for different ecosystems and showed that the results of the present study were 68.7 to 88.6 times higher. Leachate recirculation can be a cost-effective operation in reducing the volume of leachate to be treated in landfill. However, to reduce N2O flux, leachate should be applied to underground soil rather than being irrigated and allowed to flow on topsoil. 相似文献

Toward Integrated Environmental Management for Challenges in Water Environmental Protection of Lake Taihu Basin in China 总被引:5,自引:3,他引:2
Lake Taihu is the third largest freshwater lake in China. It serves many social, economic, and ecological purposes in the
drainage basin. Unfortunately, the water has been heavily polluted due to rapid industrialization and urbanization during
the last two decades. Notwithstanding great efforts made so far to improve the water quality, the environmental situation
is still far from being optimistic. The basin and the lake are facing a range of severe environmental challenges: rapid socio-economic
development continues to place great pressures on the environment, current pollution control projects have many problems from
the viewpoint of effectiveness and efficiency of their implementations, and the non-point sources of pollution such as agricultural
fields, for which control is more difficult than for industrial point sources, have become the main contributors to serious
eutrophication of the lake. Considering the characteristics of the environmental challenges and problems confronting the basin
and the lake, we focus on integrated environmental management (IEM) as a promising and effective approach to overcome these
predicaments. Current practices and problems of environmental management in the basin are examined, and potential future developments
are discussed. Three aspects of the IEM are emphasized: institutional cooperation, public participation, and internalization
of environmental externalities. We think these are the most critical for not only the basin but also for the whole of China

Observations of Atmospheric Nitrogen and Phosphorus Deposition During the Period of Algal Bloom Formation in Northern Lake Taihu,China 总被引:4,自引:1,他引:4
Cyanobacterial blooms in Lake Taihu occurred at the end of April 2007 and had crucial impacts on the livelihood of millions
of people living there. Excessive nutrients may promote bloom formation. Atmospheric nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) deposition
appears to play an important role in algal bloom formation. Bulk deposition and rain water samples were collected respectively
from May 1 to November 30, 2007, the period of optimal algal growth, to measure the bulk atmospheric deposition rate, wet
deposition rate, and dry deposition rate for total nitrogen (TN; i.e., all species of nitrogen), and total phosphorus (TP;
i.e., all species of phosphorus), in northern Lake Taihu, China. The trends of the bulk atmospheric deposition rate for TN
and the wet deposition rate for TN showed double peaks during the observation period and distinct influence with plum rains
and typhoons. Meanwhile, monthly bulk atmospheric deposition rates for TP showed little influence of annual precipitation.
However, excessive rain may lead to high atmospheric N and P deposition rates. In bulk deposition samples, the average percentage
of total dissolved nitrogen accounting for TN was 91.2% and changed little with time. However, the average percentage of total
dissolved phosphorus accounting for TP was 65.6% and changed substantially with time. Annual bulk atmospheric deposition rates
of TN and TP during 2007 in Lake Taihu were estimated to be 2,976 and 84 kg km−2 a−1, respectively. The results showed decreases of 34.4% and 78.7%, respectively, compared to 2002–2003. Annual bulk deposition
load of TN for Lake Taihu was estimated at 6,958 t a−1 in 2007 including 4,642 t a−1 of wet deposition, lower than the values obtained in 2002–2003. This may be due to measures taken to save energy and emission
control regulations in the Yangtze River Delta. Nevertheless, high atmospheric N and P deposition loads helped support cyanobacterial
blooms in northern Lake Taihu during summer and autumn, the period of favorable algal growth. 相似文献

The use of photographs as surrogates for field observations is common in studies of perception and judgment of the visual environment despite theoretically important differences between photographs and three-dimensional scenes. The few available empirical studies of the validity of photographs as representations of the visual environment have methodological weaknesses. We describe a method for investigating the representativeness of photographs that differs from previous approaches in three important respects. First, individual subjects rather than group averages are analyzed. Second, multiple judgments are obtained so that the relations among judgments of photographs can be compared with the environment. Third, a ‘lens model equation’ analysis is used to examine relations among systematic components of variation in judgments. An illustrative study of visual air quality judgments is presented. It was found that, in the case of judgments of visual air quality, photographs provide a good representation of the visual environment. 相似文献

Status and fuzzy comprehensive assessment of combined heavy metal and organo-chlorine pesticide pollution in the Taihu Lake region of China 总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
The status of combined heavy metal and organo-chlorine pesticide (OCPs; i.e. HCH and DDT) pollution was investigated and the soil environmental quality of the Taihu Lake watershed, one of the most developed regions in China, was evaluated using a fuzzy comprehensive assessment. Statistical analyses showed the presence of combined pollution in the soil. At many sampling sites, heavy metal concentrations were above corresponding background values, indicating the effects of extraneous pollutants. It has been over 20 years since China banned the use of OCPs, but they can still be found in soil samples of this region. HCH levels at all investigated sites were below the Chinese Environmental Quality Standard for Soils. Fuzzy comprehensive assessment showed that the overall soil quality in this region could be categorized as class I. Nevertheless, the high coefficients of variation for levels of DDT, Cd and Hg indicated the existence of some point-source pollution. Continuous monitoring and further studies of the region are recommended to prevent pollution of farmland from these sources. 相似文献

Lake water eutrophication has become one of the most important factors impeding sustainable economic development in China.
Knowledge of the current status of lake water eutrophicatoin and determination of its mechanism are prerequisites to devising
a sound solution to the problem. Based on reviewing the literature, this paper elaborates on the evolutional process and current
state of shallow inland lake water eutrophication in China. The mechanism of lake water eutrophication is explored from nutrient
sources. In light of the identified mechanism strategies are proposed to control and tackle lake water eutrophication. This
review reveals that water eutrophication in most lakes was initiated in the 1980s when the national economy underwent rapid
development. At present, the problem of water eutrophication is still serious, with frequent occurrence of damaging algal
blooms, which have disrupted the normal supply of drinking water in shore cities. Each destructive bloom caused a direct economic
loss valued at billions of yuan. Nonpoint pollution sources, namely, waste discharge from agricultural fields and nutrients
released from floor deposits, are identified as the two major sources of nitrogen and phosphorus. Therefore, all control and
rehabilitation measures of lake water eutrophication should target these nutrient sources. Biological measures are recommended
to rehabilitate eutrophied lake waters and restore the lake ecosystem in order to bring the problem under control. 相似文献

Environmental dredging is a primary remedial option for removal of the contaminated material from aquatic environment. Of
primary concern in environmental dredging is the effectiveness of the intended sediment removal. A 5-year field monitoring
study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of the environmental dredging in South Lake, China. The concentrations of
total nitrogen (TN), total phosphors, and heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Hg, and As) before and after dredging in sediment
were determined and compared. Multiple ecological risk indices were employed to assess the contamination of heavy metals before
and after dredging. Our results showed that the total phosphorus levels reduced 42% after dredging. Similar changes for Hg,
Zn, As Pb, Cd, Cu, Cr, and Ni were observed, with reduction percentages of 97.0, 93.1, 82.6, 63.9, 52.7, 50.1, 32.0, and 23.6,
respectively, and the quality of sediment improved based on the criterion of Sediment Quality Guidelines by USEPA and contamination
degree values (Cd) decreased significantly (paired t-test, p < 0.05). Unexpectedly, the TN increased 49% after dredging compared to before dredging. Findings from the study demonstrated
that the environmental dredging was an effective mechanism for removal of total phosphorus and heavy metals from South Lake.
Nevertheless, the dredging was ineffective to remove total nitrogen from sediment. We conclude that the reason for the observed
increase in TN after dredging was likely ammonia release from the sediment impairing the dredging effectiveness. 相似文献

Assessing the Risk of Phosphorus Loss and Identifying Critical Source Areas in the Chaohu Lake Watershed,China 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Agricultural nonpoint phosphorus (P) pollution is a primary cause of eutrophication in many freshwater systems. Identifying
areas that are at high risk for P loss in a watershed and concentrating management efforts on these smaller sections is a
more effective method for limiting P loss than implementing general strategies over a broad area. A modified P index scheme
was used to assess the risk of P loss and identify critical source areas in the Chaohu Lake watershed on a regional scale.
In the new P ranking scheme, soil P sorption index (PSI) and degree of P saturation (DPS) were introduced as source factors
to represent the inherent ability of P transport in the soil-water interface. Distance from P sources to Chaohu Lake was also
considered as a transport factor to take into account P degradation from source to the final receiving water. The ranking
scheme was modified to use available data on the regional scale. P index calculation results showed high spatial variation
of P loss risk in the Chaohu Lake watershed. The highest risk areas focused on the downstream parts of the main rivers that
discharge into Chaohu Lake. The induction of new components into the P index calculation makes it possible to identify critical
source areas of nonpoint P loss on a regional scale, thus allowing decision makers to implement best management practices
(BMPs) in such a manner as to minimize P loss to sensitive watercourses. 相似文献

Modeling Nutrient Release in the Tai Lake Basin of China: Source Identification and Policy Implications 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Because nutrient enrichment has become increasingly severe in the Tai Lake Basin of China, identifying sources and loads is crucial for watershed nutrient management. This paper develops an empirical framework to estimate nutrient release from five major sectors, which requires fewer input parameters and produces acceptable accuracy. Sectors included are industrial manufacturing, livestock breeding (industrial and family scale), crop agriculture, household consumption (urban and rural), and atmospheric deposition. Results show that in the basin (only the five sectors above), total nutrient loads of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) into aquatic systems in 2008 were 33043.2 tons N a?1 and 5254.4 tons P a?1, and annual area-specific nutrient loads were 1.94 tons N km?2 and 0.31 tons P km?2. Household consumption was the major sector having the greatest impact (46 % in N load, 47 % in P load), whereas atmospheric deposition (18 %) and crop agriculture (15 %) sectors represented other significant proportions of N load. The load estimates also indicate that 32 % of total P came from the livestock breeding sector, making it the second largest phosphorus contributor. According to the nutrient pollution sectors, six best management practices are selected for cost-effectiveness analysis, and feasible options are recommended. Overall, biogas digester construction on industrial-scale farms is proven the most cost-effective, whereas the building of rural decentralized facilities is the best alternative under extreme financial constraint. However, the reduction potential, average monetary cost, and other factors such as risk tolerance of policy makers should all be considered in the actual decision-making process. 相似文献

Environmental risk assessment (ERA) is a powerful technical tool for analyzing potential and extreme adverse environmental impacts, and has found wide application in supporting decision-making processes over the last two decades. However, to date there has been no interrelated application of ERA to support the processes of strategic decision-making (SDM), especially in coastal areas.
In this paper, we attempt to verify the feasibility of the proposed integrated ERA–SDM approach and its methodology by applying it to two case studies (in Xiamen Bay and Luoyuan Bay) of the principal coastal functional zoning (PCFZ, a kind of SDM and similar to the coastal and marine spatial planning in western). The results show that the integrated ERA–SDM approach could integrate ERA into the entire SDM process, directly support the PCFZ, and avoid or mitigate dire environmental risk that can be introduced by SDM processes. 相似文献

An extensive data survey and study of the Greek market for composts or products marketed as such was carried out in order to acquire a comprehensive image of the local situation, in view of the proposed operation of large municipal solid waste (MSW) composting facilities and EU legislation changes. Physical and chemical parameters (moisture, organic matter, electrical conductivity, pH and heavy metals), stability indicators (self-heating potential, germination index) and biological indicators (microbial population, pathogen indicators and selected pathogens) were analyzed for the assessment of product quality. Results revealed wide variations even within the same group of products, which is particularly significant for parameters directly related to environmental protection and public health. The heavy metal content ranged from levels exceeding the fairly lenient Greek standards to below the stringent limits for A+ class compost in Austria. About 25% of the composts examined met the heavy metal limits for the EU eco-label award. Salmonella spp. was not detected in any of the composts but Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium perfringens were found in 17 and 96% of the composts respectively. Pathogen indicator microorganisms were present at levels above suggested limits in all the composts. The high variability of such important parameters in composts available on the Greek market suggests an urgent need for establishing quality assurance procedures and mechanisms in the country. Moreover, the wide range of limit values within EU member states suggests the need for developing EU compost quality standards, in order to harmonize the compost markets. 相似文献

Social, economic, and ecological impacts of the "Grain for Green" project in China: a preliminary case in Zhangye, Northwest China 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
This paper provides applications of the integrated assessment (IA) approach in a case study in the Heihe River Basin of Northwest China. Some socio-economic and ecological impact results of forestry land use scenarios are presented in the paper. While seven types of land use scenarios for carbon sequestration purposes were considered for the IA applications, this paper mainly presents impacts of land use scenarios within the Grain for Green (GFG) category [see Yin et al., this volume]. China's national Grain for Green Project was implemented in order to protect and improve ecosystems, while allowing an evolution of agricultural management practices compatible with raising peasants' incomes. Zhangye Prefecture, located in the Heihe River Basin of an arid area in Northwest China, was chosen as the investigation site of the IA case study. Based on fundamental orientation theory, the social sustainability impacts of GFG land use options were assessed. Between 2002 and 2004, the GFG project brought US$23.56 million yuan in net income to the prefecture's peasants. Project implementation resulted in a 1.71 Gg increase in net primary productivity (NPP), as well as a 44.36 Gg rise in net ecosystem productivity (NEP). This suggested that, in Zhangye Prefecture, the Grain for Green Project could enhance the sustainability and stability of the local society, increase peasants' net income, as well as protect and remediate local ecosystems. 相似文献

Many UK local authorities, looking to meet their regulatory recycling targets, have opted for voluntary kerbside collection schemes for source segregated recyclables from households. The success of a recycling service is highly dependant on the number of people who participate in the service and the frequency of its use. High participation rates are therefore an essential component of any effective kerbside collection scheme. It is commonly accepted that recycling behaviour is strongly influenced and motivated by personal opinions as well as external issues such as access and convenience. This paper characterises the recycling attitudes within West Oxfordshire, UK, and compares them with the results from a previous study conducted during 2003 in Brixworth, in Daventry, UK. From 1st April 2004, West Oxfordshire District Council, expanded its kerbside collection scheme for dry recyclables, adding cardboard, batteries, aerosols and mixed plastics to the already collected recyclables (paper, glass, textiles and metals) and increasing the frequency from fortnightly to weekly In this study, the recycling attitudes and behaviour of a cross-sectional socio-economic sample from households from West Oxfordshire, is investigated. It is observed that the propensity to recycle varies between individuals and socio-economic areas, and that recycling is influenced by concern for future generations, the need to bury less waste in landfills, and the fact that recycling saves resources and protects the environment. The results from this study can be used to help inform local authorities who are considering the development of their recycling schemes and associated promotional campaigns based on an understanding of their socio-demographic profile. 相似文献

Environmental Pollution now persist in Nigeria especially the oil-rich regions of Delta State. One of these problems is due
to gas flaring. Thermal gradient resulting from the gas flared at Kwale/Okpai gas plant is hereby reported. Surface temperature
variations with distance from the flare point were investigated for the four cardinal directions. The results show a surface
temperature elevation of about 3.7° C above the mean normal daily temperature within a radius of 270 M. Hence the thermal
equilibrium has been altered. This increase in temperature has undesirable effect on man and his environment especially on
the socio-economic lives and activities of the inhabitants. It is therefore necessary that Government Agencies empowered to
monitor environment such as Federal Environmental Protection Agency (FEPA) should embark on adequate remediation activities
in order to stop the environmental degradation before enormous and permanent damage is caused. Furthermore, the companies
involved in the gas flaring should be made to be concerned with the danger they may be causing the inhabitants in particular
