Three-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings were exposed to ambient or elevated ozone (O(3)) concentrations in open-air exposure fields in central Finland in 1995-97. Three different treatments were applied in 1996 and 1997: ambient air, elevated O(3) (1.3-1.5xambient) during the growing season (June-September) and elevated O(3) in March-September, i.e. the growing season including the springtime O(3) exposure. The ambient mean O(3) concentrations were 40% higher in springtime (March-May) compared to the concentrations during the growing seasons. Maximum O(3) concentrations were measured in April or early May, whereas a clear increase in the stomatal activity of the seedlings was observed by the middle of May. This suggests a low intake of O(3) by conifers despite the higher O(3) concentrations in spring. Stomatal conductance, and contents of chlorophyll and ribulosebisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) in current-year needles were not significantly affected by any O(3) treatment. Only a slight decrease in current-year shoot growth, slight increase in the abscission of 2-year-old needles and increased electron density of chloroplast stroma by springtime O(3) exposure suggest a rather small contribution of elevated springtime O(3) concentrations to total O(3) damage under current climatic conditions in Finland. However, the increases in springtime O(3) concentrations may enhance the cumulative effects of O(3) during long-term O(3) exposures.  相似文献

Ozone (O(3)) flux into Norway spruce (Picea abies) and cembran pine (Pinus cembra) needles was estimated under ambient conditions at six rural sites between 580 and 1950 m a.s.l. We also assessed age-related differences in O(3) flux by examining changes in leaf conductance across the life span of Norway spruce. At the leaf level O(3) flux into the needles was effectively controlled by stomatal conductance and, hence by factors such as temperature, irradiance and humidity, which control stomatal conductance. Seasonal variations in O(3) flux were mainly attributed to the course of the prevailing temperature. During the growing season, however, data have emphasised leaf-air vapour pressure difference as the environmental factor most likely to control stomatal conductance and O(3) flux into the needles. In the sun crown stomatal conductance averaged over the growing season decreased with increasing tree age from 42.0+/-3.5 mmol O(3) m(-2) s(-1) in 17-year-old trees to 7.1+/-1.0 mmol O(3) m(-2) s(-1) in 216-year-old trees, indicating that O(3) concentration in the substomatal cavities is higher in young than in old trees. Independent from tree age stomatal conductance and O(3) flux were approximately 50% lower in shade needles as compared to sun-exposed needles. Stomatal conductance was also greater in the current flush (24+/-5.6 mmol O(3) m(-2) s(-1)) and in 1-year old needles (16+/-4 mmol O(3) m(-2) s(-1)) than in older needle age classes (12+/-1 mmol O(3) m(-2) s(-1), averaged across the four older needle age classes). In trees similar in age (60-65 years old) average O(3) flux into sun needles increased from 0.55+/-0.36 nmol m(-2) s(-1) at the valley floor to 0.9 nmol m(-2) s(-1) in 1950 m a.s.l. Cumulative O(3) uptake during the vegetation period increased from 11.4+/-1.7 mol m(-2) in the valley to 14 mol m(-2) at the alpine timberline. Although stomatal conductance provides the principal limiting factor for O(3) flux, additional field research is necessary in order to improve our understanding concerning the quantitative 'physiological threshold dose' which internally can be active and can have adverse effects of O(3) on forest trees.  相似文献

In the present field study the role of ascorbate in scavenging the harmful atmospheric trace gases O3 and NO2 was examined. For this purpose ascorbate contents were determined in needles of adult Scots pine trees (Pinus sylvestris L.) during three consecutive years. Ascorbate contents were correlated with ambient tropospheric O3 and NO2 concentrations and with meteorological parameters. The results showed a strong correlation of atmospheric O3 but not of atmospheric NO2 concentrations with the apoplastic content of ascorbate during the seasonal course. Ascorbate contents in needle extracts did not correlate with ambient trace gas concentrations. In the apoplastic space, but not in needle extracts ascorbate contents correlate highly significantly with global radiation. From these results it is assumed that apoplastic ascorbate in Scots pine needles is adapted to the actual atmospheric O3 concentration to mediate immediate detoxification of O3, while the atmospheric O3 concentration itself is largely dependent on light intensity.  相似文献

Impacts of UV-B radiation on the glutathione level were studied in mature Scots pine needles (Pinus sylvestris L.) during the third season of a UV-B field experiment. Studies were made on 4-week-old (July) to 14-week-old (September) current-year needles and 3-year-old needles which had their third UV-B-exposure season in progress. Depending on the season and the year (1996-98), the supplemental UV-B dose varied from 0.92 to 5.09 kJ m-2 day-1 UV-BBE compared to 0.47-2.44 kJ m-2 day-1 UV-BBE under the ambient treatment. Fully grown UV-B-treated current-year needles showed lower total glutathione concentrations after the vegetation period in September, whereas in UV-B-treated 3-year-old needles the total glutathione content was significantly lower and the proportion of oxidized glutathione (GSSG%) 56% higher in July. The significant differences in total glutathione in current-year needles in September and in active 3-year-old needles in July seem to indicate that the effect of enhanced UV-B radiation on glutathione status could be cumulative.  相似文献

Micro-climatic and ambient ozone data were combined with measurements of sap flow through tree trunks in order to estimate whole-tree ozone uptake of adult Norway spruce (Picea abies), cembran pine (Pinus cembra), and European larch (Larix decidua) trees. Sap flow was monitored by means of the heat balance approach in two trees of each species during the growing season of 1998. In trees making up the stand canopy, the ozone uptake by evergreen foliages was significantly higher than by deciduous ones, when scaled to the ground area. However, if expressed per unit of whole-tree foliage area, ozone flux through the stomata into the needle mesophyll was 1.09, 1.18 and 1.40 nmol m(-2) s(-1) in Picea abies, Pinus cembra and Larix decidua, respectively. These fluxes are consistent with findings from measurements of needle gas exchange, published from the same species at the study site. It is concluded that the sap flow-based approach offers an inexpensive, spatially and temporally integrating way for estimating ozone uptake at the whole-tree and stand level, intrinsicly covering the effect of boundary layers on ozone flux.  相似文献

The effects of ambient air compared to filtered air on the reproduction of females and mean relative growth rate (MRGR) of nymphs of C. pilicornis on Norway spruce was determined in open-top chambers at Wengernalp in the Swiss Alps (1900 m a.s.l.) and at Sch?nenbuch near the city of Basle (400 m a.s.l.). The ambient concentration of O(3), the main pollutant at both sites, varied between 45 and 120 microg m(-3) (24-h mean) at both sites. A 5-8 day exposure of spruce saplings to ambient compared to filtered air enhanced the MRGR of nymphs of C. pilicornis of local and northern origins at Sch?nenbuch. The cumulative numbers of offspring of C. pilicornis were higher in ambient air chambers than in filtered air chambers at Sch?nenbuch, but not at Wengernalp. Filtration of ambient air did not affect significantly the levels of total free amino acids or reducing sugars in phloem sap or concentration of total phenolics in needles at the end of the growing season. The results suggest that ambient air with elevated O(3) and with high daily fluctuations, as it can be observed in Sch?nenbuch, affects aphid performance on conifers more than ambient air with also elevated, but rather constant levels of O(3), as it can be observed in mountain forest areas.  相似文献

In the Retezat Mountains concentrations of O3, NO2 and SO2 in summer season 2000-2002 were low and below toxicity levels for forest trees. While NH3 concentrations were low in 2000, the 2001 and 2002 concentrations were elevated indicating possibility for increased N deposition to forest stands. More than 90% of the rain events were acidic with pH values <5.5, contributing to increased acidity of soils. Crown condition of Norway spruce (Picea abies) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica) was good, however, defoliation described as >25% of foliage injured increased from 9.1% in 2000 to 16.1% in 2002. Drought that occurred in the southern Carpathians between fall 2000 and summer 2002 and frequent acidic rainfalls could cause the observed decline of forest condition. Both Norway spruce and European beech with higher defoliation had lower annual radial increments compared to the trees with low defoliation. Ambient O3 levels found in the Retezat did not affect crown condition of Norway spruce or European beech.  相似文献

PCDD/F and PCB concentrations in remote mountainous spruce stands of the Central European Alps show strong geographic variation. Independent of the matrix (0.5 year old needles, humus or mineral soil), the highest pollutant levels were always found at the lateral zones of the mountain range. High levels coincided with strong precipitation, particularly along the northern margin of the study region. The most volatile PCB congener propagated farther into the colder, drier central Alps than the heavier species. Matrices with different accumulation history (needles and humus) repeatedly reflected different spatial immission patterns. Consistent with its much longer exposure, pollutant levels in humus exceeded those of needles by up to two orders of magnitude. Needle contamination varied with altitude but the vertical trends were highly variable between transsects and changed between years, too.  相似文献

Single Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees, aged 30 years, were grown in open-top chambers and exposed to two atmospheric concentrations of ozone (O3; ambient and elevation) and carbon dioxide (CO2) as single variables or in combination for 3 years (1994-1996). Needle growth, respiration and nitrogen content were measured simultaneously over the period of needle expansion. Compared to ambient treatment (33 nmol mol(-1) O3 and 350 micromol mol(-1) CO2) doubled ambient O3 (69 nmol mol(-1)) significantly reduced the specific growth rates (SGRs) of the needles in the early stage of needle expansion and needle nitrogen concentration (N1) in the late stage, but increased apparent respiration rates (ARRs) in the late stage. Doubled ambient CO2 (about 650 micromol mol(-1)) significantly increased maximum SGR but reduced ARR and N1 in the late stage of needle expansion. The changes in ARR induced by the different treatments may be associated with treatment-induced changes in needle growth, metabolic activities and turnover of nitrogenous compounds. When ARR was partitioned into its two functional components, growth and maintenance respiration, the results showed that neither doubled ambient O3 nor doubled ambient CO2 influenced the growth respiration coefficients (Rg). However, doubled ambient O3 significantly increased the maintenance respiration coefficients (Rm) regardless of the needle development stage, while doubled ambient CO2 significantly reduced Rm only in the late stage of needle expansion. The increase in Rm under doubled ambient O3 conditions appeared to be related to an increase in metabolic activities, whereas the decrease in Rm under doubled ambient CO2 conditions may be attributed to the reduced N1 and turnover rate of nitrogenous compounds per unit. The combination of elevated O3 and CO2 had very similar effects on growth, respiration and N1 to doubled ambient O3 alone, but the interactive mechanism of the two gases is still not clear.  相似文献

Bioindicator plants for ambient ozone in Central and Eastern Europe   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Sixteen species of native detector plants for ambient ozone have been identified for use in Central and Eastern Europe. They include the forbs Alchemilla sp., Astrantia major, Centuarea nigra, Centauria scabiosa, Impatiens parviflora, Lapsana communis, Rumex acetosa and Senecio subalpinus; the shrubs Corylus avellana, Cornus sanguinea and Sambucus racemosa; the trees Alnus incana, Pinus cembra and Sorbus aucuparia; and the vines Humulus lupulus and Parthenocissus quinquefolia. Sensitivity to ozone and symptoms have been verified under controlled exposure conditions. Under these conditions, symptom incidence, intensity and appearance often changed with time after removal from exposure chambers. Ozone sensitivity for four species: Astrantia major, Centuarea nigra, C. scabiosa and Humulus lupulus are reported here for the first time. The other 12 species have also been confirmed by others in Western Europe. It is recommended that these detector bioindicator species be used in conjunction with ozone monitors and passive samplers so that injury symptoms incidence can be used to give biological significance to monitored ambient ozone data.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate composition of the essential oils in the needles of Pinus sylvestris growing in the areas affected by a cement factory (CF), and an oil refinery (OR). Volatile components of the needles were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. The most heavily polluted CF stand had significantly higher concentration of gamma-Terpinene, Caryophyllene oxide in the current-year needles, while higher concentration of delta-3-Carene, alpha-Terpinene, gamma-Terpinene and Terpinolene was documented for 1-year-old needles. The most heavily polluted OR stand had a significantly higher concentration of Sabinene+beta-Pinene, 1-epi-Cubenol in the current-year needles and a significantly higher concentration of Camphene, Sabinene+beta-Pinene, Myrcene, alpha-Cadinene, 1-epi-Cubenol in the 1-year-old needles than the least polluted site. Along transects an increase in the amount of some diterpenes and a decrease in the components of the shorter chain essential oils was observed. These effects could be at least partially attributed to SO(2).  相似文献

To study individual and combined impacts of two important atmospheric trace gases, CO2 and O3, on C and N cycling in forest ecosystems; a multi-year experiment using a small-scale ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Laws.) seedling/soil/litter system was initiated in April 1998. The experiment was conducted in outdoor, sun-lit chambers where aboveground and belowground ecological processes could be studied in detail. This paper describes the approach and methodology used, and presents preliminary data for the first two growing seasons. CO2 treatments were ambient and elevated (ambient + 280 ppm). O3 treatments were elevated (hourly averages to 159 ppb, cumulative exposure > 60 ppb O3, SUM 06 approximately 10.37 ppm h), and a low control level (nearly all hourly averages <40 ppb. SUM 06 approximately 0.07 ppm h). Significant (P < 0.05) individual and interactive effects occurred with elevated CO2 and elevated O3. Elevated CO2 increased needle-level net photosynthetic rates over both seasons. Following the first season, the highest photosynthetic rates were for trees which had previously received elevated O3 in addition to elevated CO2. Elevated CO2 increased seedling stem diameters, with the greatest increase at low O3. Elevated CO2 decreased current year needle % N in the summer. For 1-year-old needles measured in the fall there was a decrease in % N with elevated CO2 at low O3, but an increase in % N with elevated CO2 at elevated O3. Nitrogen fixation (measured by acetylene reduction) was low in ponderosa pine litter and there were no significant CO2 or O3 effects. Neither elevated CO2 nor elevated O3 affected standing root biomass or root length density. Elevated O3 decreased the % N in coarse-fine (1-2 mm diameter) but not in fine (< 1 mm diameter) roots. Both elevated CO2 and elevated O3 tended to increase the number of fungal colony forming units (CFUs) in the AC soil horizon, and elevated O3 tended to decrease bacterial CFUs in the C soil horizon. Thus, after two growing seasons we showed interactive effects of O3 and CO2 in combination, in addition to responses to CO2 or O3 alone for a ponderosa pine plant/litter/soil system.  相似文献

Needles of 20-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) saplings were studied in an ultraviolet (UV) exclusion field experiment (from 2000 to 2002) in northern Finland (67 °N). The chambers held filters that excluded both UV-B and UV-A, excluded UV-B only, transmitted all UV (control), or lacked filters (ambient). UV-B/UV-A exclusion decreased nitrate reductase (NR) activity of 1-year-old needles of Scots pines compared to the controls. The proportion of free amino acids varied in the range 1.08-1.94% of total proteins, and was significantly higher in needles of saplings grown under UV-B/UV-A exclusion compared to the controls or UV-B exclusion. NR activity correlated with air temperature, indicating a “chamber effect”. The study showed that both UV irradiance and increasing temperature are significant modulators of nitrogen (N) metabolism in Scots pine needles.  相似文献

The accumulation of atmospheric HCB, Lindane, DDT, DDE and the PCB congeners 52, 101, 138, 153 and 180 in spruce needles (Picea abies) was investigated at outdoor locations and in greenhouses supplied with ambient air. The air supply of the greenhouses was modified to dinstinguish between gaseous and particle-associated deposition of the compounds. Accumulation of the compounds occurred in all spruce except those grown in the greenhouse where the gaseous concentration of the compounds was reduced. Spruce grown in the greenhouse supplied with particle-free ambient air behaved similarity to those grown outdoors. Protecting the spruce located outdoors from rain did not affect the accumulation. The results show that under spring and summer conditions at a typical central European rural environment dry gaseous deposition is the dominant pathway of these compounds to needles. The bulk modulus of elasticity (E) for Pinus contorta (lodgepole pine) x Pinus banksiana (jack pine) hybrids was compared between a site (AI) close to a sour gas processing plant and a control site (AV). The mean bulk modulus of elasticity for branches from AI was 47.5 MPa vs 18.5 MPa for the control site (AV). Site AI had been exposed to S-gas emissions and large amounts of elemental S deposition and had an acidic soil (pH 4.0 at 10 cm depth). During 1981 the needles at AI had more aluminum and iron compared to those at AV (900 ppm vs 390 ppm AI in the 3-year-old needles). Mean leader growth was measured over a 3-year period and was observed to be greater at AI than AV (46+/-7 cm vs 29+/-9 cm for 1988). Histochemically, the needles at AI had higher phenol and lignin content than AV. These results suggest that the S-gas fumigation, S-dust deposition, plus increased concentrations of soluble aluminum and iron had altered the cell wall elastic properties resulting in altered water relations. The implications of this on leaf diffusive resistance and photosynthesis are discussed.  相似文献

Pollen germination and tube growth are among the most sensitive responses to atmospheric pollution. Both these are inhibited by the acidity of the growth medium. Pollen grains from two species (Pinus cembra L. and Sambucus nigra L.) were germinated in media over a range of pHs (5.0, 4.5, 4.0, 3.5, 3.0 and 2.5) and six types of acidity (H(2)SO(4), HNO(3), H(2)SO(4): HNO(3) in 1:1, 2:1, 3:1 and 5:1 ratio). Pollen of the Gymnosperm is shown to be more resistant to acidity in the medium. Sulphuric acid alone and the ratio 2:1 with nitric acid are demonstrated to be the more harmful for P. cembra and S. nigra, respectively. The latter species was sensitive to all mixtures, particularly in respect to germination percentage.  相似文献

Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) seedlings from three full-sib families were exposed to 0, 50, 100 or 150 ppb ozone (O(3)) (5 h/d, 5 d/week for 6 or 12 weeks). Soil water potential was maintained near pot capacity (-0.03 MPa) or soil was allowed to dry to approximately -1.0 MPa and resaturated. Chlorotic mottling and flecking of needles due to O(3) injury were observed for seedlings from all pine families. Soil water deficit lessened the intensity of O(3) symptoms, possibly due to stomatal closure. Exposure to O(3) and soil water deficit each resulted in less seedling volume growth and dry weight, and changed the nonstructural carbohydrate content of seedlings compared with controls. Increasing O(3) concentrations resulted in a linear reduction in foliar starch content but did and affect hexose or sucrose content. Soil water deficit resulted in less starch and soluble sugar contents in above- and below-ground plant parts compared with controls. Soil water deficit did not affect numbers or percentages of roots that formed ectomycorrhizal tips. A linear dose-response relationship between O(3) and ectomycorrhizae was observed. The number of ectomycorrhizal tips/cm long root and the percentage of feeder roots that formed ectomycorrhizae were lower as O(3) concentration increased. Overall, each stress alone caused less seedling growth and carbohydrate content compared with controls, but only O(3) was responsible for suppression of ectomycorrhizae.  相似文献

Naturally regenerated, 30-year-old Scots pines (Pinus Sylvestris L.) were grown in open-top chambers and exposed in situ to doubled ambient O(3), doubled ambient CO(2) and a combination of elevated O(3) and CO(2) from 15 April to 15 September for three growing seasons (1994-1996). To examine the effects of O(3) and/or CO(2) on photosynthesis, chlorophyll a fluorescence and gas exchange were measured simultaneously. Doubled ambient O(3) significantly decreased the rates of photosynthesis at all levels of photon flux density. This was related mainly to a significant decrease in the photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PS II) and the rate of whole electron transport, rather than to a decrease in stomatal conductance. When measurements were made at doubled ambient concentration of CO(2) (700 micromol mol(-1)), doubled ambient CO(2) treatment did not lead to a significant change in the intrinsic capacity of photosynthesis, as manifested by no changes in PS II, the rate of electron transport, the maximal rate of photosynthesis and the apparent quantum yield of CO(2) assimilation. However, elevated CO(2) increased the sensitivity of stomatal conductance to light and decreased maximal stomatal conductance. When O(3) and CO(2) were combined, the O(3)-induced decrease in photosynthesis rate was reduced significantly by a high concentration of CO(2). This may be partly related to the decrease in stomatal conductance induced by the high concentration of CO(2). The complete mechanism behind this interaction is, however, still unclear.  相似文献

Field symptoms typical of ozone injury have been observed on several conifer species in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and tropospheric ozone levels in the Park can be high, suggesting that ozone may be causing growth impairment of these plants. The objective of this research was to test the ozone sensitivity of selected conifer species under controlled exposure conditions. Seedlings of three species of conifers, Table Mountain pine (Pinus pungens), Virginia pine (Pinus virginiana), and eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis), were exposed to various levels of ozone in open-top chambers for one to three seasons in Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee, USA. A combination of episodic profiles (1988) and modified ambient exposure regimes (1989-92) were used. Episodic profiles simulated an average 7-day period from a monitoring station in the Park. Treatments used in 1988 were: charcoal-filtered (CF), 1.0x ambient, 2.0x ambient, and ambient air-no chamber (AA). In 1989 a 1.5x ambient treatment was added, and in 1990, additional chambers were made available, allowing a 0.5x ambient treatment to be added. Height, diameter, and foliar injury were measured most years. Exposures were 3 years for Table Mountain pine (1988-90), 3 years for hemlock (1989-91), and 1 and 2 years for three different sets of Virginia pine (1990, 1990-91, and 1992). There were no significant (p<0.05) effects of ozone on any biomass fraction for any of the species, except for older needles in Table Mountain and Virginia pine, which decreased with ozone exposure. There were also no changes in biomass allocation patterns among species due to ozone exposure, except for Virginia pine in 1990, which showed an increase in the root:shoot ratio. There was foliar injury (chlorotic mottling) in the higher two treatments (1.0x and 2.0x for Table Mountain and 2.0x for Virginia pine), but high plant-to-plant variability obscured formal statistical significance in many cases. We conclude, at least for growth in the short-term, that seedlings of these three conifer species are insensitive to ambient and elevated levels of ozone, and that current levels of ozone in the Park are probably having minimal impacts on these particular species.  相似文献

There is a lack of data for health risk assessment of long term personal exposure to certain ubiquitous air pollutants present particularly in urban atmospheres. The relationship between ambient background concentrations and personal exposure is often unknown. A pilot campaign to measure indoor concentrations, outdoor concentrations and personal exposure to benzene, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde was conducted in a medium sized French town. A strong contribution to total personal exposure was observed from indoor sources, especially for formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, suggesting that indoor sources are dominant for these compounds. For benzene, the average personal exposure exceeded a 10 μgm?3 limit value, although this was not the case for the ambient background concentration. For formaldehyde, the limit level was also exceeded. Observations suggest that true personal exposure cannot be determined directly from measurements pertaining from fixed ambient background monitoring stations. It is hoped that this will be taken into consideration by the bodies responsible for monitoring air pollution and the future European Air Quality Directive.  相似文献
