Urban and industrial development has caused a major impact on environmental soil quality. This work assesses the extent and
severity of contamination in a small urban area subjected to an industrial impact and identifies the major anthropogenic inputs.
Twenty-six soil samples were collected from agricultural and urban sites, and concentrations of potentially toxic elements
(As, Cd, Cu, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn), PAHs and PCBs, were determined. In spite of the low median concentrations observed,
some sites represent a potential hazard for human health and ecosystems. Concentrations of contaminants were higher than those
found in a nearby city, indicating that the study area is affected by the surrounding industry. The use of multivariate statistical
analyses allowed for the identification of the main factors controlling the variability of potentially toxic elements and
organic pollutants in the soils. The presence of Cr, Fe, Mn and Ni was associated with geogenic inputs, and Cu, Pb, Zn, As,
PAHs and PCBs were associated with anthropogenic inputs. Industry and traffic were the most important anthropogenic sources.
Soil characteristics were identified as important factors controlling the spatial variability of elements, both from recognised
natural and anthropogenic origin. Differences between land uses were observed, which may be attributed to both management

In order to evaluate the impact of atmospheric pollutants emitted by the industrial settlement of Milazzo (Italy) on agriculture,
sulphur dioxide and ozone levels in air were monitored and the data were used to estimate yield losses of the most widespread
cultures. Trace element concentrations in crops and soils were also detected and metabolic profiles of soil microbial communities
were considered. Vibrio fischeri test was used to appraise airborne pollutant ecotoxicity and epidemiological studies on causes of death distribution were
carried out to characterize health state of people living in the area. All the sampling points were selected in farms on the
basis of a theoretical meteo-diffusive model of industrial air pollutants. Experimental SO2 and O3 values mainly exceeded the threshold established by Italian and EU regulations to protect vegetation and they correspond
to estimated significant crop losses. Conversely toxic element residues in soils and in agroalimentary products were generally
lower than the fixed values. SO2 and O3 concentrations, toxic element contents and ecotoxicity levels of airborne pollutants were not related only to industrial
site emissions, while the fluctuations on metabolic profiles of soil microbial communities seem to agree with the predicted
deposition of xenobiotic compounds from the industrial plants. The epidemiological study evidenced a better health state of
populations living in the investigated area than in the Messina province and the Sicily region but, inside the area, males
living in the municipalities closest to the industrial settlement exhibited a worst health state than those in the very far

When designing a monitoring campaign, one has to consider many factors in the decision to perform a long-term synoptic monitoring program or a short-term intensive study. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. This paper compares and contrasts the information obtained from two studies conducted on the Laurentian Great Lakes. One, the Integrated Atmospheric Deposition Network (IADN), is a long-term synoptic monitoring study and the other, the Atmospheric Exchange Over Lakes and Oceans (AEOLOS), was a short-term intensive study. The advantages of long-term synoptic monitoring programs are providing greater spatial information, the relative influence of long and short-range transport on the regional background, gross loadings representative of the majority of each lake and long-term temporal trends. Short-term intensive studies provide more information on the processes governing sources, transport and deposition, such as the urban/industrial influence on adjacent large water bodies, specific sources to an urban/industrial area and short-term fluctuations in concentrations due to meteorology, source strength and photochemical reactions. Using information provided by both the IADN and AEOLOS studies, areas of urban influence are predicted for each of the five Great Lakes. 相似文献

Mathematical models were developed to simulate the production and dispersion of aerosol phase atmospheric pollutants which are the main cause of the deterioration of monuments of great historical and cultural value. This work focuses on Particulate Matter (PM) considered the primary cause of monument darkening. Road traffic is the greatest contributor to PM in urban areas. Specific emission and dispersion models were used to study typical urban configurations. The area selected for this study was the city of Florence, a suitable test bench considering the magnitude of architectural heritage together with the remarkable effect of the PM pollution from road traffic. The COPERT model, to calculate emissions, and the street canyon model coupled with the CALINE model, to simulate pollutant dispersion, were used. The PM concentrations estimated by the models were compared to actual PM concentration measurements, as well as related to the trend of some meteorological variables. The results obtained may be defined as very encouraging even the models correlated poorly: the estimated concentration trends as daily averages moderately reproduce the same trends of the measured values. 相似文献

The epiphytic lichen Parmelia caperata (L.) Ach. was used as bioaccumulator of the heavy metals Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn in the environs of the town of Pistoia (central northern Italy). The concentrations of Cd, Cr, Ni, Hg and Pb were comparable with those found in areas not subject to atmospheric pollution. Copper and especially Zn were found in rather high concentrations. The groundwater is one of the most contaminated natural resources in Patancheru industrial area due to unplanned and haphazard
industrial growth and urbanization without following basic pollution control norms. The rapid industrialization initiated
in early 1970 has started showing up its after effects few years later in the form of physiochemical contamination of the
both surface and groundwater bodies of the area. It has resulted in local people being deprived of safe drinking water, plant
and aquatic life has severely affected, and situation is deteriorating over the years in the area in spite of some preventive
and remedial measures being initiated. The focus of the present study is to understand the chemical characteristics of groundwater
and geochemical processes the contaminant water is undergoing which are normally imprinted in its ionic assemblages. The water
samples collected in pre- and post-monsoon seasons from forty two groundwater and four surface water sources were analyzed
for major constituents such as Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, CO3−, HCO3−, Cl−, SO42−, NO3−, and F−, and selected samples were tested for ten important trace metals like Fe, Pb, Bi, Mn, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Cd. Na+ among cations and Cl− among anions dominate the water in both the seasons where as Ca2+, HCO3−, and Cl− show significant reduction in their ionic strength in post-monsoon. The groundwater in general is of mixed type, but most
of it belong to Na+–Cl−, Na+–HCO3−, Ca2+–Mg2+–HCO3−, and Ca2+–Mg2+–Cl− facies. The Na+ and Ca2+ are in the transitional state with Na+ replacing Ca2+ and HCO3−–Cl− due to physiochemical changes in the aquifer system. The evaluation of hydrochemistry through various ionic indices, ratios,
and plots suggest that silicate–carbonate weathering, ion exchange, dissolution, and evaporation processes are responsible
for origin of the present chemical status of the groundwater which is also controlled by the contamination from extraneous
sources that could have accelerated the dissolution processes. Gibbs plots authenticate that the evolution of water chemistry
is influenced by interaction of percolating water with aquifer matrix apart from anthropogenic enrichment of elements which

The paper aims at investigating the contribution of a steel plant located in a rural area in northwestern Italy (700,000 tons of steel/year) to the deposition fluxes of Polychorinated Dibenzo-p-dioxins and Polychorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/PCDFs) at local level through the analysis of sampling data, literature data, and air dispersion model (AERMOD)output data. Total measured deposition fluxes of PCDD/PCDFs in three monitoring stations were consistent with other studies carried out in Italy in urban and suburban areas and in rural European areas; while these were lower than those measured in other European urban/suburban areas or in sites influenced by industrial sources. Furthermore, the measured fluxes were also compared with the pattern of PCDD/Fs in ambient air sampled at the same sites in a previous study. This comparison showed a similarity between air concentration and deposition patterns of the samples collected at the three monitoring stations and a clear distinction of these from the source. The study was completed with AERMOD simulations, conducted with a mass mean particle diameter of 0.5 μm, according to the particle size distribution of the samples collected at the source. AERMOD calculated deposition fluxes of two to three orders of magnitude lower than those measured in two monitoring points; while in the most distant monitoring station, the deposition fluxes were too low to be calculated by the model. The simulations confirmed that the most distant monitoring station was not subject to emissions from the steel plant. The analysis highlighted the limited influence of the source in the local PCDD/F deposition fluxes. 相似文献

This study investigated the temporal trends of element concentrations and ecophysiological parameters (integrity of cell membranes, membrane lipid peroxidation, and sample vitality) in thalli of the lichen Pseudevernia furfuracea transplanted in and around an industrial area of S Italy from May 2010 to May 2011, once every 3 months. Element accumulation at levels indicating that the atmosphere of the study area was polluted by most elements occurred only during the third trimester of exposure, and the ecophysiological parameter best reflecting this trend was sample vitality expressed in terms of activity of the enzyme dehydrogenase. Among the available climatological parameters, the different amount of rainfall during the exposure period may influence the results, especially the number of hours with rainfall >16 mm/day, which is the threshold between light–moderate and moderate–heavy rainfall in the Mediterranean area. 相似文献

Individual aerosol particles (n = 1170) collected at work stations in a nickel refinery were analyzed by wavelength-dispersive electron-probe microanalysis. By placing arbitrary restrictions on the contents of sulfur and silicon, the particles could be divided into four main groups. Scanning electron images indicated that most of the particles examined were relatively small (< or = 2 microm, equivalent projected area diameter), and that their morphology suggested formation from a melt. There was an absence of well-defined phases and simple stoichiometries, indicating that exposures to pure substances such as nickel subsulfide or specific oxides appeared not to occur. Although the elemental composition of particles varied greatly, a rough association was evident with the known elemental content of the refinery intermediates. The implications of the findings for aerosol speciation measurements, toxicological studies and interpretation of adverse health effects are explored. 相似文献

Rock, sediment and water samples from areas characterised by hydrothermal alterations in the Sabatini and Vico Volcanic Districts, near Rome and the large city of Viterbo, respectively, were collected and analysed to determine the total fluorine (F) content and to understand the F geochemical background level in the volcanic districts of central Italy. Leaching and alteration processes controlling the high concentration of F in water were also investigated. Fluorine concentrations were directly determined (potentiometrically) by an F selective electrode in water samples, while the procedure for rock samples included preliminary F dissolution through alkaline fusion. F concentrations higher than 800 mg kg(-1) were commonly found in the analysed rocks and sediments; the concentration depended on the lithology and on the distance from the alteration areas. A specific successive sampling campaign was conducted in three areas where the F content in sediments was particularly high; in the same areas, measurements of CO(2) flux were also performed to investigate the possible deep origin of F. To verify the relationships among the high F contents in rocks and sediments, the leaching processes involved and the presence of F in the aquifer, we also collected water samples in the western sector of the Sabatini Volcanic District, where hydrothermal manifestations and mineral springs are common. The data were processed using a GIS system in which the F distribution was combined with morphological and geological observations. The main results of our study are that (1) F concentrations are higher in volcanic and recently formed travertine (especially in hydrothermally altered sediments) than in sedimentary rocks and decrease with distance from hydrothermal alteration areas, (2) F is more easily leached from hydrothermally altered rocks and from travertine and (3) sediments enriched with F may indicate the presence of deep regional fractures that represent direct pathways of hydrothermal fluids from the crust to the surface. 相似文献

Performance optimisation of a passive sampler for monitoring hydrophobic organic pollutants in water

The performance of an integrative passive sampler that consists of a C18 Empore disk sorbent receiving phase fitted with low density polyethylene membrane was optimised for the measurement of time-weighted average concentrations of hydrophobic micropollutants in water. A substantial improvement of sampling characteristics including the rate of sampling and the sampling precision was achieved by decreasing the internal sampler resistance to mass transfer of hydrophobic organic chemicals. This was achieved by adding a small volume of n-octanol, a solvent with high permeability (solubility [times] diffusivity) for target analytes, to the interstial space between the receiving sorbent phase and the polyethylene diffusion-limiting membrane. 相似文献

The paper presents a lidar study of the aerosol structure in the planetary boundary layer in the case of radiation fog and haze. A conceptual model of the dynamics of the depolarization coefficient profile during the mixing layer development, taking into account the presence of a multilayered inversions and radiation fogs, is proposed. Various techniques are employed in the processing of the lidar signal in order to determine the mixing layer height as well as more details of the aerosol structure in the low atmosphere, namely, finding the maximum of the signal returned from the lowest temperature inversion, the crossing point of the S function's first derivative with the x axis, and profiles of the depolarization ratio. After the complete destruction of the stable stratification, a low constant value of the depolarization ratio within the newly formed mixing layer is being observed. The study of stable boundary layer disintegration and convective boundary layer formation in the presence of fogs and/or clouds is of both scientific and practical significance in what concerns the protection of the environment and the aviation meteorology. 相似文献

This article analyses elemental composition of suspended particulate matter (SPM) samples collected monthly from 1999 to 2005 at two locations in Yokohama, Japan. Microwave digestion and inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy was employed to measure Mg, Al, Ca, V, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Ag, Cd, Cs, Ba, Pb, and Bi. Water-soluble ions (Na?+?, NH4 ?+?, K?+?, Ca2?+?, Cl???, NO3 ???, and SO4 2???) and carbonaceous mass (elemental and organic carbon) were detected using ion chromatograph and CHN analyzer, respectively. The results indicate that the composition of SPM on one of the sites is determined by automobile emissions and on the other by industrial combustions. The impact of the emission regulations for automobiles in large Japanese cities, which were enacted during 2002 and 2003, on the SPM composition of the samples is also studied. 相似文献

A survey, based on the use of vascular plants to describe the distribution of selected elements (21 in total) was performed in 11 sites in the area of Castelfiorentino (Tuscany, Central Italy) differing for land use, from urban to industrial and rural areas. Lettuce plants grown under standardized conditions were positively used as biodeposimeters of airborne trace elements. Washing was found to be highly significant in reducing concentrations of many elements in the samples, suggesting a general surface contamination of leaves. The typical crustal element Al showed good correlations with Co, Fe, Li and V; on the contrary, Zn and Cd were intercorrelated and showed no connection with crustal indicators. Lead was still a relevant environmental presence, as the experiments were carried out before the ban of leaded gasoline. Source apportionment by factor analysis put in evidence a major contribution of crustal materials, followed by man-related activities; a minor role was ascertained for marine aerosol. A comparison was made between analytical data of lettuce plants grown in our experimental sites and a bulk of commercial lettuce purchased at a local supermarket. It should be stressed how Cu concentrations of commercial material were significantly higher than those found in our plants; this is likely caused by phytosanitary treatments. 相似文献
