Age, growth and maturity parameters are described for the Indo-Pacific squid Sepioteuthis lessoniana both temporally and spatially (equatorial, tropical and subtropical). Tropical squid that grew through periods of warming water temperatures grew 9% faster than squid that grew through periods of cool water temperatures. The tropical spring-hatched and equatorial squid had similar growth rates (3.24, 3.18 g/day) and these were significantly faster than the tropical summer/autumn hatched squid (2.89 g/day). The oldest squid aged was 224 days, but the majority of individuals were <200 days. Subtropical squid were larger, older and matured later than equatorial and tropical spring-hatched squid. The mean weight of subtropical squid aged between 100 and 150 days was >400 g, 85% greater than tropical and equatorial squid. Geographical differences revealed that subtropical mature winter females and males had mean ages >150 days, respectively 17% and 23% older than their tropical mature winter counterparts. Temporal differences in age at maturity were also evident with tropical winter females and males having a mean age of ~140 days, respectively 41% and 25% older than their summer counterparts. Cooler subtropical and winter tropical squid had the heaviest gonads (>15 g ovaries, >1.5 g testes) compared to summer tropical and equatorial squid. However, relative gonad investment (GSI) values of the cooler squid were significantly lower with cool subtropical and winter tropical females having GSI values <3, which was about half the value of the warmer water females. This study revealed considerable plasticity in the size-at-age of this species. The tropical population had growth parameters that fluctuated between an equatorial strategy (fast growth, small body size, and small gonads) and a subtropical strategy (large body size, slower growth, and large gonads) depending on season.  相似文献

Nine monthly samples of arrow squid Nototodarus gouldi were obtained off Portland, Australia, during 2001. Statolith age analysis was used to determine growth rates and cohort structure during the study period. The results of statolith increment periodicity experiments were inconclusive due to difficulties in discerning increments in the cultured squids, although the region of the statolith in the maintained squids did increase over time. The maximum age obtained was 360 days, which is consistent with a 1-year life cycle in this species. Squid obtained were >150 days old and usually >200 mm mantle length. While there was often a mix of maturity stages for females, the majority of males were mature. Monthly length frequency distributions suggested that there was a complex mixture of cohorts in the samples obtained. Fitting a Normal mixture model to the age frequency distribution suggested that at least four cohorts were present during the period of the study. Growth was modelled with an exponential function with individuals grouped according to hatch season. The rate of growth for seasonal groups of squid was considerably different between males and females. There was no evidence of seasonal differences in growth rates of males. In contrast, the summer hatched females had significantly greater growth rates than winter and spring at P=0.05, and the growth rates of autumn hatched females were found to be significantly different to the winter hatched females at the 0.1 level.Communicated by M.S. Squid typically display considerable intra-specific plasticity in size and age-at-maturity in response to ambient environmental conditions, yet little is known of the mechanisms driving these variations. We examined the intra-specific variability in Nototodarus gouldi reproductive traits to determine patterns of energy allocation between somatic and reproductive processes over short temporal scales. Females caught during the cool months of May and July were larger, had slower lifetime growth, lower gonad investment, and better somatic condition than females caught during the warmer months, suggesting a trade-off between gonad investment and somatic condition in females. On the other hand, males showed a tight coupling between somatic condition and gonad investment for most months, with increases in somatic and gonad tissue occurring concurrently. In male squid, an increase in lifetime growth rate was coupled with an increase in the relative weights of somatic and reproductive structures, whereas in females, percent increase in body weight per day was correlated only with gonad development. Patterns of repro-somatic investment in mature females had implications for spawning strategies, since female squid with higher levels of gonad investment apparently released batches of eggs together as a group, regardless of body size, whereas females with low gonad investment possibly spawned their eggs independently of one another. In terms of life-history theory, male squid were able to respond rapidly to environmental fluctuations without compromising either the gonad or the soma. However, although mature females did not appear to respond as quickly to ambient conditions, female squid possibly produced two different reproductive strategies, possibly to maximise offspring survival in either a stable or a variable environment. Hong Kong, lying just below the Tropic of Cancer (22°17′N, 114°09′E), experiences a strongly seasonal environment, with a cool almost temperate winter and a hot, tropical, summer. Histological sectioning of the gonads of the high-shore barnacle, Chthamalus malayensis Pilsbry, showed a seasonal trend in the development of its reproductive organs. Four stages of female gonad development were identified according to the cell types present: post-spawning, resting, growth and mature stages. The female gonad was mature from April to November, which was related to seawater temperatures, and entered a resting phase from December to March. Although the male gonad showed a seasonal developmental trend and reached maximum maturity in summer, the seminal vesicles were full of spermatozoa and functional throughout the year. The reproductive season of this species is therefore solely dependant upon the maturity of the female gonad. The estimated maximum number of broods per year was up to 10 and the maximum number of eggs produced per brood can reach 3,000 eggs. The minimum size for female gonad maturity was 6 mm rostro-carinal diameter (RCD) at which size, the barnacles were ~6-month old. Sperm production occurred at a smaller size (2 mm=2-month old). Compared with Chthamalus montagui and Chthamalus stellatus from temperate regions, C. malayensis produced a greater number of broods per year, had a longer reproductive period and faster gonad development. Chthamaloid barnacles in tropical regions may, therefore, invest more energy per year in reproduction during their life span. Contrary to the seasonal gonad developmental pattern of C. malayensis in the present study, however, C. malayensis in Singapore (which experiences only slight seasonal variation) had mature female and male gonads throughout the year, further supporting the strong role of climatic conditions effecting the reproductive biology of barnacles.  相似文献

Over a 3-year period (1996-1998), reproduction of the commercial sea cucumber Holothuria scabra (Jaeger, 1833) was investigated in the Solomon Islands to determine the spawning pattern and whether gametogenesis is continuous or seasonal. The gonad consisted of a single cohort of tubules that developed uniformly. Macroscopic examination of the gonads revealed that mature gametes were present throughout the year. Individuals with gonads at different stages of maturity were present in most samples. Partly spawned gonads were prevalent in females, whereas mature gonads were prevalent in males. The time at which the peak gonad index was recorded differed among years. Although gametogenesis was continuous, with a potential for prolonged gamete release, a period of enhanced spawning occurred during the dry season, from September to December. Maximum gonad indices were reached prior to and during this period of enhanced spawning. Histology revealed that gametogenesis reinitiated in partly spawned gonads, resulting in the presence of gametes at different stages of development in the gonad. The uniform growth of gonad tubules indicated that H. scabra does not conform to the progressive tubule recruitment model described for holothurian oogenesis. Continuous reproduction in H. scabra and prolonged availability of mature gametes would facilitate use of this species for aquaculture.  相似文献

Seasonal lipid dynamics of various developmental stages were investigated in Pseudocalanus minutus and Oithona similis. For P. minutus, the dominance of 16:1(n−7), 16:4(n−3) and 20:5(n−3) fatty acids indicated a diatom-based nutrition in spring, whereas 22:6(n−3), 16:0, 18:2(n−6) and 18:1(n−9) pointed to a flagellate-based diet during the rest of the year as well as omnivorous/carnivorous low-level feeding during winter. The shorter-chain fatty alcohols 14:0 and 16:0 prevailed, also reflecting biosynthetic processes typical of omnivores or carnivores. Altogether, the lipid signatures characterized P. minutus as an opportunistic feeder. In contrast, O. similis had consistently high amounts of the 18:1(n−9) fatty acid in all stages and during all seasons pointing to a generally omnivorous/carnivorous/detritivorous diet. Furthermore, the fatty alcohol 20:1(n−9) reached high percentages especially in adult females and males, and feeding on Calanus faecal pellets is suggested. Fatty alcohols, as wax ester moieties, revealed significant seasonal variations in O. similis and a seasonal trend towards wax ester accumulation in autumn in P. minutus. P. minutus utilized its lipid deposits for development in the copepodite stages III and IV and for gonad maturation in CV and females during the dark season. However, CVs and females depended on the spring phytoplankton bloom for final maturation processes and reproduction. O. similis fueled gonad maturation and egg production for reproduction in June by wax esters, whereas reproduction in August/September co-occurred with the accumulation of new depot lipids. Both species revealed significantly higher wax ester levels in deeper (>50 m) as compared to surface (0–50 m) dwelling individuals related to a descent prior to overwintering.  相似文献

Reproduction in the widely distributed tropical sea urchin Echinometra mathaei (de Blainville) was examined in three Kenyan reef lagoons that differed in substrate cover and E. mathaei population density. Histological examination of the gonads and gonad index measurements for 3 years showed a seasonal reproductive cycle with gametogenesis commencing in July, when temperature and light are at their lowest, and spawning commencing in December and peaking in February to May, when temperature and light reach their annual maxima. Monthly gonad indices correlated significantly with seawater temperature and light intensity. Male urchins had mature gametes for a longer period (8 months) than females (6 months), possibly an adaptive strategy that increases the probability of fertilization. Lunar periodicity was not observed, as male and female gonads were full of gametes on all days of the lunar cycle during the period of spawning. The peak in spawning activity coincides with the peak in phytoplankton abundance, which could ensure high food availability for the planktonic larvae. Gonad weights were significantly higher relative to urchin weight at the reef having the largest mean sizes and lowest population of urchins, indicating availability of food resources for growth and reproduction. E. mathaei at the reef with the highest density had the smallest urchins and high relative gonad sizes, indicative of a tradeoff between growth and reproduction when food is limited.Communicated by O. Age-specific information on individual octopus reproductive development and investment from wild populations has until recently been unobtainable. Using daily-formed increments within stylets (internal shells) the individual ages of 503 wild Octopus pallidus were determined. In addition, detailed reproductive information was collected for each of the aged octopus, along with reproductive data for an additional 925 octopus. All of the octopus were collected from Bass Strait waters in south-eastern Australia from November 2004 to November 2006. This information was used to investigate seasonal trends in reproductive scheduling and investment, fecundity and egg size. Maturation in O. pallidus primarily depends on size with little relationship to age and is highly variable between genders, with females >350 days still maturing in comparison to all males >142 days being mature. Size at 50% maturity for females was approximately 473 g, which is considerably larger than male 100% maturity at <250 g. This indicates that for females at least, maturity does not necessarily come with age. Seasonal scheduling in reproductive investment between genders revealed an optimal spawning period between late summer and early autumn. These results reinforce the view that individual growth and maturity is highly variable in cephalopods.  相似文献

Stable isotopes are increasingly used in the study of trophic interactions of many aquatic animals and most recently cephalopods. To evaluate the application of the method to squids, it is important to assess isotopic differences among and within consumer tissues that may confound the resolution of ecological relationships. Inter- and intra-tissue isotopic variation was examined in 55 individuals of the oceanic squid Todarodes filippovae that were collected at the beginning of April 2000 in the southwestern Indian Ocean (between 44°S, 76°E, and Saint Paul and Amsterdam islands, 38°S, 78°E). Delipidated soft tissues (mantle, arm, buccal mass, gill and reproductive organs) showed small δ13C and δ15N differences, which were probably tissue-specific. A lower carbon value was observed in the digestive gland as a consequence of incomplete lipid removal. Hard tissues, such as beaks and gladii, had lower 15N values than soft tissues, which can be explained by the presence of chitin, a 15N-depleted molecule. Females (n = 38) and males (n = 17) had identical δ13C values, but females showed higher δ15N values than males. The difference was size-related rather than sex-related, however, as females were generally larger than males. A comparison of similar-sized females and males produced identical nitrogen values. These data suggest dietary shifts from lower to higher trophic levels during growth, because δ15N values of large T. filippovae were much higher than that of small specimens. As expected, nitrogen values of lower beaks and gladii of large squids increased from the oldest to the most recently formed region, reflecting the progressive growth of chitinized tissues in parallel with dietary changes. Sequential sampling along the growth increments of squid beaks and gladii can likely be used to produce a chronological record of dietary information throughout an individual’s history.  相似文献

The Patagonian squid, Loligo gahi DOrbigny, has been described as having temporally and spatially identifiable spawning aggregations. Variation at six microsatellite loci was used to assess whether seasonal and geographical spawning groups around the Falkland Islands represent distinct sub-populations. Genetic variation at these loci is high in this species (mean expected heterozygosity=0.87; mean number of alleles=14.7). No evidence of significantly different allele frequencies was found, either between samples from putative spawning cohorts or geographical areas, indicating that L.gahi around the Falkland Islands comprise a single genetically homogeneous population. Age structure analysis of samples (from statolith growth increments) indicated substantial spread in hatching dates among individuals of similar size and maturity status, suggesting the potential for extensive interbreeding between seasonal cohorts. A sample of L.gahi from the SE Pacific (Peru) displayed distinctly different gene frequencies (and allele size distribution at one locus) from SW Atlantic samples, supporting the suggestion that SE Pacific and SW Atlantic populations may represent distinct subspecies.Contributed by J.P. The present study reports the gametogenic cycle of the common octopus, Octopus vulgaris Cuvier, 1797 in the Atlantic coast of Andalusia between May 2001 and May 2002. A total of 673 specimens of total weight ranging from 30 to 3,732 g were analysed. The gonad development was defined by means of histological methods and gonadosomatic indexes. Four gametogenic stages were identified in males (I immature, II maturing, III mature, IV spawning) and in females (I immature, II maturing, III pre-spawning, IV spawning). The sex ratio obtained was not significantly different from 1:1 (P>0.01). Mature males were found during the whole year, September being the month when the highest rate of sexually active individuals occurred (48%). In females, the gametogenic cycle commenced in December and ended in November, and spawning occurred between April and October, with two maximum peaks in August and September (48% in each). The reproductive behaviour of 248 specimens comprising four size classes of the infaunal bivalve Abra alba (Wood) was investigated between September 1994 and November 1995 in Kinsale Harbour. Small males returned a very small proportion of sexually mature and spawning animals. By contrast, no spawning females were found in this size class, suggesting that males develop and mature at a smaller size than females. Mean gonad maturity indices indicated that, except for the smallest size class, A. alba exhibits two spawning events in 1 year, i.e. a lesser spring and a major autumn spawning event. The spring event was well synchronised between males and females, while the autumn spawning was more broadly synchronised between the sexes. Only one spawning event was recorded for very large males and females, also occurring in spring. Spawning stages were recorded for both sexes over all size classes between February and November, indicating only a short period of sexual repose, if any. Oocyte diameters did not show a discrete size range from developing to spawning stages. All stages were seen to contain varying proportions of smaller, less mature oocytes, suggesting that large A. alba females do not develop and spawn en bloc, but release their gametes periodically. In order to investigate the possible coupling between sexual maturation and the light organ system (LOS) development in leiognathid fish, we determined the seasonal changes in the gonad maturation and the light organ enlargement in Photoplagios rivulatus, one of the leiognathid species possessing highly sexually dimorphic LOS. The fish specimens collected from March 2001 to August 2002 were assessed for standard length (SL), body weight (BW), sex, gonad weight (GW) and the light organ weight (LW). Gonadosomatic index (GSI = 102GW/BW) and percent weight of the light organ to body weight (PLW = 102 LW/BW) were used to demonstrate the extent of development of gonad and the LOS, respectively. Mean GSIs in both male and female increased in June through August. The mean PLW in males showed a similar trend to that of the GSI, while PLW in females showed no clear seasonal trends. A significant positive correlation was found between the GSI and the PLW in males but not in females. The onset of sexual maturity in males (55 mm SL) coincided with that of the light organ enlargement. These results strongly support the functional coupling between reproduction and bioluminescence in this species of leiognathid. From an evolutionary perspective, sexual dimorphism in the LOS is likely to have evolved through sexual selection for reproductive success in leiognathid fishes.  相似文献

The cost of reproduction for the terminal spawning onychoteuthid squid, Moroteuthis ingens, was analysed using measures of condition and tissue biochemistry. Both males and females showed a dramatic drop in the weight of the gonad in stage 6 (spent) individuals. The mantle weight and nidamental gland weight of females also decreased during the maturation process. Males, however, had a marked increase in both the penis and spermatophoric complex weight in spent individuals, while female oviducal gland weight and nidamental gland length also increased in stage 6 individuals. Residual analysis indicated that testis growth was not developing at the expense of mantle growth, although there was a suggestion of cost to the fins. Females showed that the development of the ovary occurred at a cost to both the mantle and fins. Overall body condition also declined with maturity stage for both males and females, with stage 6 individuals of both sexes in poor condition. Very few females had eggs in the oviducts, suggesting that the oviducts are used as ducts instead of storage organs. Proximal analysis revealed a loss of constituents within the mantle during maturation, with an associated increase in water, indicating the remobilization of energy from the mantle to fuel reproduction. Abundance and life-cycle features of the mesopelagic hyperiid amphipod Primno abyssalis (formerly P. macropa) in the Oyashio region, western subarctic Pacific, were investigated using samples collected between July 1996 and July 1998. P. abyssalis was collected throughout the entire survey period, with abundance peaks occurring in spring to autumn. While all maturity stages of males and females were observed throughout the study period, the peak reproduction season was in summer. Instar analysis based on the segment number of the pleopod rami indicated that hatched juveniles molted 10 times before becoming adult males and 13 times before becoming adult females. Judging from the dry and ash-free dry weights of each instar, males and females continued to feed throughout the final instar stage. Based on cohort analysis of seasonal samples and laboratory observations on molting frequencies, growth in body length of P. abyssalis was linear with time, and estimated generation lengths were 2.3-3.8 years for females and 1.4-1.9 years for males. Brood size of females ranged from 66 to 337 and increased with increasing female body length. Lifetime fecundity, calculated as the sum of six successive broods, was 1,004. Compared with P. abyssalis in the southern Sea of Japan, those in the Oyashio region have a larger number of adult instars (six versus five for females, three 3 vs one for males), a lower growth rate (0.014 mm day-1 vs 0.021 mm day-1), and mature earlier (instar 13 vs instar 15 for females; instar 10 vs instar 11 for males). These characteristics are considered to be advantageous life-history traits to counteract higher niche competition within the mesopelagic community and higher predation pressure by mesopelagic fishes in the Oyashio region than in the Sea of Japan.  相似文献

The study of how and why marine animals distribute themselves at sea has important conservation and management implications of the species and their habitats. We characterize the oceanographic and biological landscapes of the marine areas used by breeding Southern Giant Petrels (Macronectes giganteus) at Patagonian colonies and explore inter-sexual and inter-colony differences. The at-sea movements of 16 adults (7 males and 9 females) were studied by means of satellite telemetry techniques during 1999, 2000, 2002, and 2004 breeding seasons. Southern Giant Petrels utilized an oceanographic scenario characterized by high productivity, warm sea surface temperature, and shallow waters. The biological landscape was characterized by a high availability of squid and carrion nearby colonies. Females spent more time in the shelf break and exploited deeper waters than males. In contrast, males spent more time in coastal areas and they showed a higher spatial overlap with areas of high squid density than females. Such a prosperous foraging scenario for both sexes may play a key role in the growth of the breeding population of Southern Giant Petrel Patagonian colonies.  相似文献

The mud crab Scylla serrata is an important commercial crustacean being widely distributed along the southeastern coast of China. This crab and particularly its gills are subjected to seasonal fluctuations of environmental factors due to direct exposure to seawater. The investigation of seasonal variations of ATPase and antioxidant defenses in gills could be helpful for the understanding of physiological regulation mechanism of seasonal adaptations. In this study, mud crabs were collected from the subtropical waters near Xiamen island, Southeast China (24°26′46′′N, 118°04′04′′E), in August and November, 2002, and February and May, 2003, respectively, being considered as specimens from summer, autumn, winter and spring, respectively. Only healthy intermoult male crabs without carapace or appendage damage were used, having a carapace width of 7.05 ± 0.52 cm and a wet weight of 130 ± 20 g. The activities of four ATPases and three antioxidation enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase) and the content of malondialdehyde in gills were measured. The results showed that the activities of Na+, K+-ATPase, Mg2+-ATPase, Ca2+-ATPase and Ca2+, Mg2+-ATPase reached maximum levels similarly in summer and decreased in winter. The activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase were higher in summer and lower in winter, with a significant decrease in winter compared to the other seasons (p < 0.01). Glutathione peroxidase activity was higher in summer, and lower in autumn, being significantly higher in summer or winter than in spring or autumn (p < 0.01). Malondialdehyde content was higher in summer and lower in spring with significant differences among the different seasons (p < 0.01). In summary, the obvious seasonal activity variations of four ATPases and antioxidant enzymes and the content of malondialdehyde reflect a seasonal regulation of the physiological metabolising enzyme and the antioxidant capacity to cope with seasonal alterations of environment factors such as fluctuating salinities and temperatures.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in the body weight and composition of Nucula sulcata Bronn from south of Little Cumbrae Island in the Clyde Sea Area (UK) were studied during the period August, 1969 to April, 1971. The composition of an animal of standard size was calculated for each sampling date to give information on seasonal changes independent of shell growth. Increase in body-tissue weight took place between May and October as the gonad developed and as reserves were built up. Spawning in the population took place in November, resulting in a rapid fall in body weight, and an increase in tissue water-content. These processes were less well defined in 1970 than in 1969, but the same general pattern was followed in both years. Ripe males showed a consistently higher tissue weight than females, but the female gonad contained significantly greater quantities of lipid. The changes are compared with those for other bivalves from the same general area.  相似文献

Some investigators have proposed the measurement of aspartate transcarbamylase (ATCase) activity as a suitable technique for estimating zooplankton productivity. However, this technique has never been comprehensively evaluated under controlled laboratory conditions nor compared extensively with other productivity techniques in the field. This paper describes such an evaluation, using the reproduction of the calanoid copepod Calanus helgolandicus as an index of germinal growth, an important aspect of zooplankton productivity. ATCase activity and RNA:DNA ratio both increased significantly with increasing gonad maturation. In addition, ATCase activity in females responded immediately to changing food conditions, whilst changes in egg production lagged behind by ≃24 h. Shifting the ATCase data by 24 h revealed a significant and positive correlation of ATCase activity with egg production. However, in well-fed females, ATCase activity assayed at constant temperature was apparently independent of environmental temperature conditions, whilst egg production was temperature-dependent. In the field, ATCase activity was significantly correlated with egg production only in autumn and winter; when a complete seasonal cycle was considered, no correlation was found between the two measurements. These findings suggest that ATCase is involved partially in either germinal growth and/or in other biosynthetic processes of female C. helgolandicus; thus, ATCase activity does not reflect copepod egg-production with any certainty. Microscopic analysis and field sampling procedures were used to compare demographic and reproductive strategies of the intertidal wedge clam Donax hanleyanus (Bivalvia: Donacidae) in two exposed sandy beaches with contrasting morphodynamics (reflective vs. dissipative) during 13 consecutive months. Histological analysis showed that: (1) the reproductive cycle of D. hanleyanus was more extended in the dissipative beach, and this was true for all the three pre-active (beginning of gonadal activity), active (maturation) and spawning stages; and (2) males and females showed significantly smaller sizes at sexual maturity at the reflective beach. Even though successive increments in proportion and mature at size were observed, the sigmoid function was significantly steeper at the reflective Arachania for both sexes, suggesting an abrupt transition to maturity. Field sampling revealed a more extended recruitment period at the dissipative beach, where recruits were also significantly more abundant than at the reflective beach. These results give support for the habitat harshness hypothesis, which predicts that in intertidal species capable of sustaining populations across a wide spectrum of physical conditions, such as D. hanleyanus, abundance, recruitment, size at maturity and extent of reproductive and recruitment seasons increase from reflective to dissipative beaches. However, a recent hypothesis suggests that reflective beaches acting as sink populations were not sustained, because mature and spawning individuals of both sexes were found in the reflective beach throughout the study period.
