A total of 1,427 juvenile Aplysia kurodai were tagged and released during spring tides in January and February, 1973, on the rocky shore of Nabeta Bay, Japan. Recapture, weighing and release were repeated within a defined observation area during 10 spring tides from late January to early June. Recapture rates decreased with time and became significantly low after the end of the spawning season (March and April in this area). Of 1,427 individuals released, 550 (ca. 39%) were never recaptured. Only 68 individuals (ca. 5%) were recaptured 5 to 10 times during the observation period. The growth curves of these 68 individuals displayed a common growth pattern of body weight increasing almost linearly, attaining a maximum during the spawning season and then decreasing gradually. The maximum weight varied fairly widely from one individual to another. Laboratory measurements indicated a growth pattern similar to that observed in the field, and a fairly remarkable daily fluctuation in body weight was observed under laboratory conditions. The described tagging-recapture method, with slight modifications, should prove useful for future studies on the life history and ecology of A. kurodai.  相似文献

A population of Gemma gemma (Totten) was investigated for 6 yr (1978–1983) in Connecticut, USA to determine the relationship between population fluctuations, life tables of successive cohorts and factors affecting life table parameters. Seasonal cycles occurred from 1978–1981. Although density was not abnormally low in summer of 1982, the population declined rapidly thereafter because individuals present during the reproductive season were smaller than the minimal size for reproduction. Forecasts of population size from a time series model based on past densities were compared to forecasts from the intrinsic rates of growth from four separate clam life tables. The latter approach was less precise but more consistent at successfully predicting temporal trends in population abundance. Two factors were identified that potentially controlled population density and structure during the study. Correlational evidence indicated that intraspecific competition between juveniles and adults was intense in 1978 but was reduced during subsequent years. This interaction reduced the size and subsequent fecundity of the young-of-the-year. Correlational evidence also indicated that low salinity in spring of 1978, 1979, 1982 and 1983 reduced juvenile survival, but not that of adults. Qualitative evidence indicated that a third factor, predation, might also have affected G. gemma's population size and structure.  相似文献

The relationships of shell length and internal volume with soft-body dry weight for three populations of Patella vulgata L. at Sandwick Bay in the Orkney Islands were studied between August, 1979 and March, 1982. Seasonal and annual fluctuations in the regression constants were explained by age-related variations both in overall growth rates and in the amount of effort directed toward gonad production. The reproductive cycle at all three sites was well synchronised, rapid development occurring between late June and November, with spawning following sometime between December and February; the whole population then remaining in the neuter/resting stage until July. The sex ratios within the population with respect to size (age) were examined; the majority of small, mature individuals were male, the number of females increased with size, although the largest individuals at each site were males. The sex ratio in the different populations varied from 2:1 to 6:1 in favour of males, but the “functional” ratio was much less in the latter due to the population structure.  相似文献

We quantified movements of tagged giant scallops, Placopecten magellanicus (Gmelin, 1791), (40 to 115 mm in shell height) released in 1991 and 1992 at nine stations in Port Daniel Bay, Baie des Chaleurs, Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada, for periods of 10 to 52 d. Both the mean distances moved per day and dispersion distances from release points were usually greater at the two stations with sand substratum, low scallop densities and high rock crab, Cancer irroratus, densities. Movement rate and dispersion of scallops from the release points at the other seven stations were similar, even though there were marked differences in substratum type (gravel, cobble or bedrock), predator density, and scallop density. Most mean dispersal directions were random, and scallops did not appear to migrate from unsuitable to suitable habitats. Although movement did reduce predation rate, scallop movement was weakly correlated with the abundance of only one predator, C. irroratus.  相似文献

Fourteen crinoid species are found along the coral reefs of the northern Red Sea that form aggregations of different species at various depths. The shallowest aggregation consists partly of Lamprometra klunzingeri and Capillaster multiradiatus, occurring subtidal to a depth of 2 to 5 m. Of this group, Heterometra savignii inhabits depths down to 12–15 m. Further down, another group of 10-armed crinoids occurs, dominated by Decametra chadwicki and Oligometra serripinna. The deepest aggregation of crinoids occurs at 45 m; its most common members are Colobometra arabica and Comaster distinctus. Feeding on micro- and nanoplankton, shallow-water crinoids show a circadian activity rhythm; in deeper aggregations (10 to 12 m), this behaviour changes with decreasing illumination, to a diurnal activity rhythm. The symbiotic animals living on crinoids comprise 27 taxons, among them Copepoda (6 species), Mollusca (2 species), Polychaeta (11 species, especially Myzostomida); Ophiurida (1 species), Crustacea, Decapoda (6 species); and the clingfish Lepadichthys lineatus. These symbiotic animals form food webs at various depths, according to the distribution of their crinoid host. The occurrence of Indo-West Pacific and Mediterranean commensals on the same crinoid in the Gulf of Aqaba is of special interest.  相似文献

We investigated the consequences of male-male interference competition associated with alternative male mating tactics in a freshwater fish, the European bitterling (Rhodeus sericeus). Male bitterling defend territories around living mussels and attract females to lay their eggs in the gill cavities of mussels. We experimentally manipulated spawning-site abundance and male density at two spatial scales. We showed that the total number of eggs spawned by females was constrained by the number of mussels available for oviposition. The effect was mediated by behavioral interactions among competing males because of variation in the Operational Sex Ratio (OSR) in close proximity to a mussel and not by a direct limitation in mussel capacity to accommodate the eggs. Both total and local male densities affected spawning behavior, and interacted in their effect on female spawning rate. Territorial male aggression caused courtship interruptions that prolonged the time until successful spawning and increased with male density. However, territoriality broke down at the highest male density, with a consequent stabilizing effect on spawning rate.Communicated by J. Krause  相似文献

The intertidal isopods Gnorimosphaeroma oregonensis oregonensis (Dana) and Exosphaeroma amplicauda (Stimpson) are shown to have differing preferences for substratum particle-size categories. In field sampling, 80.9% of the total number of G. oregonensis oregonensis taken were present on substrata falling within a ?-4.2 to-3.8 diameter size-range, while 60.0% of E. amplicauda occupied the range ?-2.5 to-2.1. These relationships changed upon laboratory manipulation of density ratios, and suggest competitive interaction: when E. amplicauda is tested alone, the resultant preference assumes a greater niche breadth and overlap to that of the field. Introduction of G. oregonensis oregonensis produces a displacement of E. amplicauda, the degree being dependent upon their relative numerical strength. With an experimental ratio of 3:1 (G. oregonensis:E. amplicauda) there is a simulation of field densities, and the laboratory results approximate more closely the overlap in nature.  相似文献

At higher latitudes along the west coast of the USA the herbivorous intertidal snail Tegula funebralis (Adams, 1854) lives longer, grows more slowly, but attains a larger size than further south. To the north, age distributions are less predictable and often far from stationary. The differences, which have some generality, can be explained either by a primary temperature effect joined with increased hazards to planktonic larvae in the north, or else may result from a combination of interactions between intensity of predation, population density and food supply. Growth rates of transplanted individuals suggest a genetic basis for the latitudinal differences.  相似文献

Three species of hamlets, Hypoplectrus chlorurus, H. unicolor, and H. puella (Pisces: Serranidae) were observed underwater off the west coast of Puerto Rico. They are predaceous fishes, feeding on small benthic organisms, and live in close association with the coral reef. Hamlets are highly aggressive and defend large territories, excluding their own and all other species of hamlets. They are synchronous hermaphrodites. In spawning, which occurs around sunset, one member of the pair ascends, the other joins it, each clasps the nape of the other with its tail, and gametes are released. Little color change occurs, but the black marking before the eye of H. unicolor fades when fixing on prey, proving it is not used as a sighting line. The all-black nominal species H. nigricans spawns with the yellow-tailed H. chlorurus, and is regarded here as a synonym of H. chlorurus.  相似文献

Pulverized fuel ash (pfa) readily forms pozzolanic aggregates when wetted, and these are common at sites of ash dumping at sea, where they can be up to 2 m across. Field observations on the structure and fauna of aggregates from an ash dumping ground off the Northumberland (UK) coast were undertaken in 1975, together with experimental studies of aggregation, to determine the influence of ash aggregates on the benthic substrate and the faunistic colonisation of aggregates in situ. The aggregates are of a soft sandstone consistency, but are persistent at the sea bed. Particle analysis of aggregates showed negligible contribution by inorganic particles other than the ash, and an overrepresentation of larger diameter particles (3.5 to 4 Φ) compared to pure ash. There was an exponential relationship between aggregation and ash content of experimental sediments. It is suggested that only 15 to 17% of the ash reaching the sea bed will be involved in aggregation. The naturally occurring aggregate fauna consisted of a sparse but diverse sessile epifauna, which depended on encrusting bryozoans for initial colonisation, and a few boring species (Zirfaea crispata, Hiatella arctica, Polydora flava). The presence of 7 yr-old Z. crispata in aggregates confirms their persistence at the sea bed, and indicates that the ash is not toxic.  相似文献

To identify the timing and location of spawning activity for bonefish (Albula spp.) in the Bahamian archipelago, we used an acoustic telemetry array spanning 44?km2 of shallow tidal creeks, flats, and adjacent deeper coastal waters near Cape Eleuthera. In two successive years, we surgically implanted transmitters in male and female bonefish (n?=?60) and examined their movement patterns within the array. Eight bonefish surgically implanted with transmitters as part of an earlier study were also tracked. In 2009, the telemetry information was complemented with snorkeling observations, underwater video, and manual tracking of the same acoustically tagged fish, as well as fish (n?=?3) gastrically implanted with continuous transmitters. During a period of 4?C7?days spanning the full and new moons, primarily between October and May, bonefish moved from their typical shallow flats and aggregated at sites in close proximity to the deep water drop-off of the Exuma Sound. Localized movements of the large schools of bonefish (often?>1,000 fish) at these presumptive pre-spawning aggregation sites included brief trips (<8?h) just after sunset until just prior to sunrise to the abyssal wall at the edge of the Exuma Sound (i.e.,?>1,000?m depth). Tagged bonefish detected at these aggregation sites were subsequently detected back in the tidal creeks and coastal flats shortly after new and full moons and remained at these more typical shallow sites (i.e.,?<2?m depth). Although we did not directly observe spawning events, we did observe ventral nudging and porpoising behaviors, which are potentially associated with courtship. Timing of the observed movements and possible courtship behaviors was coincident with periods when gametes were well developed. Collectively, our study provides the first objective evidence suggesting that the aggregation and seasonal migration of bonefish to deep shelf environments during certain moon phases is for spawning.  相似文献

Sampling of recruitment-associated variables of Perna perna was done approximately monthly for 14 months at intertidal locations 500 m apart, nested within sites 25 km apart. Paired with intertidal locations were nearshore locations, 600 m to sea. Sampling assessed spawning, densities of larvae in the water column and densities of late plantigrades and juveniles on the shore. Major events in each variable were synchronous over larger scales (10s of kilometres) while subsidiary events were synchronised at smaller scales, varying within sites (100s of metres) or even within locations (metres). This suggests that the processes driving major events operated over large scales while processes operating at much more local scales drove less intense, more localised events. A major spawning event occurred at all locations in May–June 1998. Weaker spawning events occurred at different times in different locations. Larvae were found on 80% of sampling occasions, densities peaking in January–March 1998 and 1999 at all locations. Plantigrades and juveniles showed less clear patterns, with considerable residual variation. There was no sign of strong coupling among variables with few significant direct or cross correlations. The major sources of variability shifted from time to space as one progressed from spawning, to plantigrade density to juvenile density. For spawning, time was the most important source (58%) of heterogeneity and space accounted for little (8%) of the total variance. For larvae and late plantigrades, time was still the most important source of variability (41% and 33%, respectively), but space was a much more substantial component. For juveniles, small-scale (residual) spatial variability dominated total variability (75%). This strongly suggests the importance of hydrography and its effects on variation in delivery of larvae to the intertidal from offshore. These findings also indicate greater spatial heterogeneity as recruits age, reflecting small-scale variations in larval delivery and the increasing importance of post-settlement mortality.Communicated by G.F. An experimental study was conducted in a South Carolina, USA salt marsh to examine relationships between meiofaunal-sized tube structure and densities of burrowing meiofauna. Abundance of the tube-building polychaete Manayunkia aestuarina Bourne was increased by erecting exciosure areas from June–August 1979. Non-manipulated areas of identical dimensions were staked out in adjacent locales. Densities of burrowing meiofauna and nematode trophic groups, and volumes of Spartina alterniflora root mat and tube-builders were monitored approximately every 2 wk from each experimental treatment. Volumes of tube-builders were significantly higher inside exclosure sites on all dates in July and August. Root-mat volume and total number of nematodes were not different between treatments at any time. The dominant copepod species, Stenhelia (D.) bifidia, and the nematode species, Spirinia sp., first increased in number inside manipulated sites and then decreased in abundance as tube volume increased. No general trend was apparent for nematode trophic groups when areas with increased volumes of tubebuilders were compared to unmanipulated sites. The fact that densities of S (D.) bifidia and Spirina sp. decreased only when tube-builders attained highest abundance suggests that negative interactions between tube-builders and these meiofaunal taxa may be effective only at elevated abundances.  相似文献

Three new cases of sponge symbiosis between species of Plakortis and Xestospongia were found in reef caves and mesophotic reef habitats of the Caribbean. Plakortis sp. 1 from the Bahamas associates exclusively with Xestospongia deweerdtae which was originally described living freely on the deep fore-reef and caves of Jamaica. In addition, we found Plakortis sp. 2 from Puerto Rico which associates with both X. deweerdtae and a different Xestospongia sp. Sponge specimens were identified using cytochrome oxidase subunit 1, 28S rRNA and 18S rRNA gene sequence fragments, spicule analysis, and histological sections with SEM. Unlike previous sponge pairs, Xestospongia spp. not only grew as a thin veneer of tissue over the Plakortis host sponge but through the mesohyl, forming inner channels (0.1–1 cm) that may provide a benefit by facilitating more efficient water transport through the dense Plakortis tissue. Symbioses with both Plakortis spp. were documented from an early recruit stage through adulthood. Spicule measurements conducted on symbiotic versus free-living X. deweerdtae revealed significantly smaller spicule sizes for symbiotic individuals, suggesting a cost in terms of silicon availability, or a benefit in terms of a lower investment in skeleton synthesis for support. This study reveals new specialized symbiotic associations between distantly related sponge genera that likely represent an alternative strategy of adaptation for life in reef caves and mesophotic reefs.  相似文献

Parasitism is hypothesized to reduce reproductive success in heavily parasitized males because females may preferentially mate with less parasitized males (parasite-mediated sexual selection) or parasites may compromise male competitiveness. In marine systems, this hypothesis is largely unexplored. This paper provides the first confirmed record of a copepod ectoparasite (Caligus buechlerae Hewitt 1964) on the common triplefin (Forsterygion lapillum) and evaluates the hypothesis that males parasitized with C. buechlerae experience lower reproductive success than unparasitized males (as determined by the presence and area of eggs within male nests). We found that 38 % of males we surveyed were infected with at least one C. buechlerae, with a median of two individuals per infected male. About 32 % of males were defending eggs, with 62.5 % of those males infected with at least one parasite. Males of greater total length (TL) were both more likely to be infected and more likely to be defending eggs. However, when statistically accounting for the effects of TL, parasite infection had no effect on the probability of defending eggs, or the average surface area of eggs when present. Positive covariation in fish length, the presence of eggs and parasite infection observed here potentially suggest that the importance of parasitic infection on reproductive success may depend upon the strength of selection for larger male body size. Our study is one of the few studies to investigate the effects of ectoparasites on reproductive success in reef fish and also provides a quantitative measure of infection for a widespread species within New Zealand.  相似文献

To better understand the dynamics of Kelvin–Helmholtz instabilities in environmental flows, their evolution is investigated using direct numerical simulations (DNS). Two-dimensional DNS is used to examine the large-scale and small-scale structures of the instability at high Reynolds and Prandtl numbers that represent real environmental flows. The semi-analytical model of Corcos and Sherman (J Fluid Mech 73:241–264, 1976) is used to explain the physics of these simulations prior to saturation of the KH billow, and also provide a computationally efficient prediction of the vortex dynamics of the instability. The DNS results show that the large-scale structure of the billow does not depend on the Reynolds number for sufficiently high Reynolds numbers. The billow structure reveals a less straightforward dependence on the Prandtl number. Predictions of the model of Corcos and Sherman (J Fluid Mech 73:241–264, 1976) improve as Reynolds number and Prandtl number increase. The small-scale structure of the vorticity and density fields vary with both Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. Three-dimensional DNS of KH flows and their transition to turbulence are used to study small length scales. Based on the thickness of the braid, a simple method is introduced to estimate the Batchelor scale, which can be used as a guide for the resolution required for the direct numerical simulation of two and three-dimensional Kelvin–Helmholtz flow fields.  相似文献

Total body weight, tube length, abdomen weight and branchial crown weight of individualSpirobranchus giganteus (Pallas) living on four different coral species on the bank reef on the west coast of Barbados were investigated in 1986. Worms onDiploria strigosa were larger in all size parameters than those onMontastrea annularis, which were larger than those onMontastrea cavernosa, which were larger than those onPorites porites. The differences between worms onM. annularis andM. cavernosa were not significant. Variation in worm size on the different corals could result from variation in mortality and/or variation in growth. Whichever the case, larger worms may have higher lifetime reproductive success. Abdomen weight is an index of gamete production inS. giganteus, and increases with increasing body weight for worms on all corals. Moreover, larger worms do not have lower abdomen weight at a given body size than smaller worms. This may imply that faster growth does not reduce gamete production at body size. The coral species on which worms are largest are those most preferred by worm larvae in the laboratory and most heavily colonised by adult worms in the field. The results suggest adaptive habitat selection by planktonic larvae ofS. giganteus.  相似文献

Two populations of Abra alba (Wood) and one of A. prismatica (Montagu) (Mollusca: Bivalvia) were studied over a 10 yr period (1977–1987) in two muddy fine-sand subtidal communities of the Bay of Morlaix, France. The survey provided an example of long-term changes in the three Abra spp. populations, which displayed synchronized changes, with a regular annual cycle and increasing densities during 1979–1980 related to the higher concentration of organic matter resulting from the Amoco Cadiz oil spill in March 1978. A. alba rapidly adapts its demographic strategy to eutrophic conditions by increasing its reproductive potential, growth, and abundance. During times of eutrophication, A. alba has three spawning periods and three recruitments per year as opposed to two spawning periods and two recruitments per year during oligotrophic conditions. Growth of the juveniles of this species is insignificant until spring for individuals recruited in the autumn, whereas individuals which settle during spring or summer display immediate rapid growth. A. prismatica has a low capacity to adapt to eutrophic conditions. It has one annual period of sexual maturation at the end of the summer, with spawning in September–October and settlement beginning in mid-November. Growth of the juveniles after settlement is also insignificant until April. These results enable comparison of the demographic strategies of these two sympatric species.  相似文献

The energetic cost of spawning and the endogenous factors that modulate spawning could modify escape response performance, leading to a conflict between the requirements of two fundamental components of fitness: reproduction and survival. We examined whether spawning changed force production during escape responses by the functionally hermaphroditic scallop, Argopecten purpuratus, and whether the response of smooth (tonic) and striated (phasic) muscles differed. Force production during escape responses by mature scallops was compared before induction of spawning, during spawning and after completion of spawning. Maximum tonic force and the area under the force curve (total force recorded) were diminished during gamete release, whereas phasic force production (maximum and mean force) increased after spawning was completed. The number and frequency of phasic contractions did not change during the spawning process, suggesting that spawning did not limit fuel availability for phasic contractions. The decrease in tonic force during spawning and the increased phasic force production after spawning may reflect changes in monoamine levels during gamete release. Whereas the spawning process modified force production during escape responses, the changes would, if anything, enhance escape performance during an initial encounter between a scallop and a predatory sea star.  相似文献
