Thirty-eight yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) were tagged with coded ultrasonic beacons between 6 March and 4 December 1996 near two buoys off the western coast of Oahu,
Hawaii. Two to four tuna were captured, tagged, and released on the same day in as rapid succession as possible in an effort
to tag members of the same school. Automated “listening” monitors attached to the buoys recorded when these marked individuals
entered within a radius of ≤1.1 km of the buoys during a 13 mo period. Twenty-seven of the tuna returned to the site of tagging.
The mean number of returns was 4.2 per tuna (max. = 17), and visits ranged from 1 to 910 min (median = 2.7 min, mean = 40.1 min).
The intervals between successive returns varied from 1 to 257 d (median = 3.0 d, mean = 17.4 d). Seventy-three percent of
the tuna returned together with tunas tagged on the same day, exceeding the frequency of returns of tuna tagged on another
day or arriving alone. This social cohesion is supported by the pattern of return visits by five tuna tagged on 6 March at
Monitoring Station R. Two or more of these tuna arrived together on 24 of 35 d when tagged tuna were detected. All five individuals
visited R on 11 April, a month after tagging, three arrived together 5 mo later on 4 August, and three returned 6 mo later
on 1 December 1996. Tuna often arrived at the same time of day, e.g. Individuals 1 and 3 visited R at 09:15 hrs on 12 April
and at 09:00 hrs 8 mo later. The returns were also site-specific. The 22 tuna tagged at R made 182 return visits to R (92.4%)
and only 15 visits to Monitoring Station K (7.6%), 10 km away. An allegiance of tuna to one school, a predilection for returning
to the site of tagging, and precise timing when visiting sites, are consistent with tuna having migratory pathways consisting
of “way-points” that are visited with temporal regularity.

The mechanism of bacterial-derived bioluminescence in the apogonid species Siphamia permutata and S. cephalotes presents some special structures, particularly the existence of two sites harboring bioluminescent bacteria, and not only one as previously described. One site, is the familiar disc-like, bacteria-harboring gland and paired ventral bioluminescent reflectors, typical for this genus, that merge and end at the level of the hypobranchial region. The second and more anteriorly situated site of luminescence features two sacs that originate in the gular region and protrude into the oral cavity, via the free space left by the laterally notched tongue. The apical parts of these luminous sacs harbor the bacteria whose light diffuses within the oral cavity. The tongue surface in the studied species is unique in character among the cardinal fishes, being criss-crossed anteriorly by protruding dermal ridges, rich in taste buds and mucus-producing cells. It would appear that at night when feeding, the luminous mouth cavity of these fish acts as a lure to attract the small prey, while the ridged structure of the tongues surface facilitates their collection and aggregation before they are swallowed.Communicated by O. Owing to the worldwide growth of aquaculture over the last years, new habitats have been created through the supplement of nutrients. This addition of nutrients affects the whole marine food web, resulting in predator species such as bottlenose dolphins becoming attracted to these areas. During this 5-year-long study that was carried out along the north-eastern coast of Sardinia (Italy), bottlenose dolphin’s history of exposure to aquaculture perturbations and their effects was documented. The interaction with a fish farm was assessed by studying the site fidelity, group dynamics, and seasonal and yearly occurrence. In all, 1,838 hours were spent in the field. Behavioural observations showed that the predominant activity (89 % of the time) in the fish farm was foraging (predation and depredation). The occurrence of bottlenose dolphins appeared to be related with the seasons and with the fish farm harvesting operations. Thus, the peak dolphin occurrence in the fish farm area throughout Fall coincides with the period in which they spend most of their time foraging. A relatively small community remained resident interacting with the fish farm over a long period of time. Hence, these individuals gained intimate knowledge on how to capitalize on the fish farm industry. This heterogeneity in site fidelity and residence patterns is highly relevant when coastal management initiatives are considered. 相似文献

Summary Adults of the seed bug, Neacoryphus bicrucis, are most numerous in large host plant patches and where host plants are most dense within patches. Males patrol small territories composed of host plants and expel other males and unreceptive females. Larger males aggressively exclude smaller males from high quality territories where both host plants and females are most dense. Consequently, large males mate more frequently than small males. Males remain for longer time in areas where host plants are more dense. However, mating experience influences tenure within a host plant patch such that males tend to remain where they have recently mated. Courtship is aggressive and male territorial behavior is similar to courtship behavior. Preference for territories in areas of high host plant density appears to have been selected to increase the rate of encounter with females which preferentially oviposit in areas of high host plant density. 相似文献

Site fidelity and homing behavior in juvenile loggerhead sea turtles (<Emphasis Type="Italic">Caretta caretta</Emphasis>) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
To investigate site fidelity and homing behavior in juvenile loggerheads ( Caretta caretta, L.), a mark-recapture study spanning four years (1998–2001) was conducted in Core Sound, N.C., USA. Each year of the study, approximately half of the turtles captured were tagged and released near the capture sites ( n=207), while the remaining turtles were displaced 15–20 km and released ( n=198). Loggerheads in both groups were recaptured in equal proportions near the original capture sites and many individuals were also recaptured in subsequent years. These data imply that juvenile loggerheads often returned to their capture sites following displacement, because if turtles dispersed randomly or remained near their release sites, then fewer displaced turtles should have been caught again. Moreover, because turtles migrate out of North Carolina sounds each winter, turtles recaptured at the same locations in different years evidently returned to specific sites following long migrations. To further investigate homing behavior, a small number of displaced turtles ( n=28) were tracked using radio telemetry following their release. Although transmitters detached from most turtles within a few days, analyses of initial headings showed strong orientation in the direction of the capture site. In addition, four turtles successfully tracked for longer periods of time all returned rapidly to the vicinity of the capture location and remained in the area. Taken together, the results of this study indicate that juvenile loggerheads exhibit fidelity to specific areas during summer months and possess the navigational abilities to home to these areas following forced displacements and long-distance migrations. 相似文献

Sexual dimorphism in the buccal cavity of paternal mouthbrooding cardinalfishes (Pisces: Apogonidae)
The mechanical basis of mouthbrooding in the coral reef cardinalfish (family Apogonidae) has yet to be established. Sexual dimorphism in the anatomy of the oral jaws and buccal cavity of seven species of paternal mouthbrooding apogonids was therefore investigated. A novel silicon injecting technique was used to quantify between sexes differences in size and shape of the buccal cavity. Osteological and morphological measurements were also examined to identify the structural features associated with variation in buccal volumes. Males buccal volumes were proportionally larger by 20–42% in five of the seven species (P<0.01), a change that was largely a result of an increase in the depth of buccal cavity. Absence of distinct osteological differences between sexes suggests that changes in the soft anatomy are primarily responsible for the increased buccal volume in males. The average increase of 31% in buccal volume of males appears to reflect their role in mouthbrooding. This is the first study to demonstrate sexual dimorphism of the buccal cavity of multiple mouthbrooding species. 相似文献

Ontogenetic change of habitat depths of Nautilus pompilius in the Philippines (Tañon Strait) and Fiji is considered by comparing 18O/16O ratios in septa and cameral fluid of live-caught specimens and ambient sea-water. 18O values of cameral liquid become heavier with decreasing volume within a chamber, which may be due to isotopic fractionation during discharge across the siphuncular wall. All of the seven Philippine and Fiji specimens analyzed show a distinct change in 18O from light values in the first seven septa to heavier values in the succeeding septa. Two different isotopic temperature scales are obtained for the Fiji and Philippine populations, suggesting a differential vital effect of metabolism between them. Sightly light 18O values in Septa 1 to 7 and hatching at relatively high temperatures in aquaria both suggest that N. pompilius hatch at the shallowest depths within their inhabitable vertical range. Depths of postembryonic animals in the Philippines and Fiji waters estimated from the isotopic temperature-depth diagrams range from 120 to 160 m and from 440 to 520 m, respectively, both of which correlate well with capture records. More than several tens of small-scale 18O cycles are detected in the sequence of nacreous layers within the single septum of a submature Philippine specimen. The present study provides the first analysis of the feeding macroecology of territorial damselfishes (Perciformes: Pomacentridae),
a circumtropical family whose feeding and behavioral activities are important in structuring tropical and subtropical reef
benthic communities. The analyses were conducted from data collected by the authors and from the literature. A strong positive
correlation was observed between bite rates and sea surface temperature (SST) for the genus Stegastes. A negative correlation was found between bite rates and mean body size for the genera Stegastes and Pomacentrus, but this relationship was not significant when all territorial pomacentrids were analyzed together. A negative correlation
between body size and SST was observed for the whole group and for the genera Stegastes, and Pomacentrus. No relationship was found between territory size and feeding rates. Principal Components Analysis showed that differences
in feeding rates accounted for most of the variability in the data. It also suggested that body size may be important in characterizing
the different genera. In general, tropical species are smaller and have higher bite rates than subtropical ones. This study
extended the validity of Bergmann’s rule, which states that larger species or larger individuals within species occur towards
higher latitudes and/or lower temperatures, for an important group of reef fishes. The identification of large-scale, robust
ecological patterns in the feeding ecology of pomacentrid fishes may establish a foundation for predicting large-scale changes

The cardinalfish Siphamia versicolor (Perciformes: Apogonidae) forms a bioluminescent symbiosis with the marine luminous bacterium Photobacterium mandapamensis, harboring the bacteria in a ventral, disc-shaped light organ and using the bacterial light apparently for counterillumination
and attracting prey. Little definitive information has been available on the developmental and microbiological events surrounding
the initiation of symbiosis, a critical stage in the life history of the fish, in S. versicolor or any of the many other species of bacterially luminous fish. To identify the stage at which light organ formation begins,
to determine the origin of cells forming the light organ, and to characterize its bacterial colonization status during development,
early developmental stages of S. versicolor obtained and reared from wild-caught mouth-brooding males were examined with histological and microbiological methods. A
light organ primordium was not evident in embryos, post-embryos, or pre-release larvae, whereas the light organ began to form
within 1 day of release of full-term pre-flexion larvae from the mouths of male fish. Analysis of post-release larvae revealed
that the light organ arises from a proliferation and differentiation of intestinal epithelial cells, and that it quickly develops
structural complexity, including the formation of chambers and gaps contiguous with the intestinal epithelium. However, the
nascent light organ remained uncolonized by the symbiotic bacteria through several days of post-release development, even
in the presence of high numbers of the symbiotic bacteria. These results demonstrate that the inception of light organ formation
in S. versicolor occurs independently of its symbiotic bacteria and that receptivity to bacterial colonization apparently requires substantial
post-release development of the light organ. Larvae therefore most likely acquire their symbiotic bacteria from seawater,
during or shortly after the transition from the pre-flexion to the flexion developmental stage. 相似文献

A karyological study ofTrachurus trachurus andT. mediterraneus (Perciformes: Carangidae) was conducted by standard, fluorochrome staining (CMA3, mithramycin, quinacrine mustard, DAPI), C-, Ag-NOR, and Alu-I banding methods. The karyotypes of both species consisted of 2n = 48 chromosomes, but of different FN:T. trachurus possessed a chromosome complement of 2 metacentric and 46 acrocentric elements, fundamental number (FN) = 50 andT. mediterraneus, a chromosome complement of 4 metacentric, 4 submetacentric, 14 subtelocentric and 26 acrocentric chromosomes, FN = 70. In neither of the two taxa investigated were heteromorphic sex chromosomes observed. The nucleolar organizer region was interstitially located on the long arm of the Ist pair of chromosomes in both species, intermediate inT. mediterraneus and subterminal inT. trachurus. Constitutive heterochromatin was found in nearly all centromeric and telomeric regions inT. trachurus; inT. mediterraneus it formed less intense telomeric and centromeric bands and thin interstitial bands on eight chromosome pairs. In addition, the C-positive material reacted differently to the digestion with endonuclease Alu-l in the two species. The results are discussed and compared with karyological data known for other species of Carangidae. 相似文献

The foraging activity of the high-shore, crevice-dwelling limpet Helcion pectunculus (Gmelin, 1791) (Prosobranchia: Patellidae) from an exposed shore on the eastern Cape coast of South Africa was monitored.
Activity was compared during spring and neap tides and between spring, summer, autumn and winter. Rhythms of activity in this
limpet varied depending upon microhabitat; individuals inhabiting both east- and west-facing rock surfaces were active during
nocturnal low tides, but limpets on west-facing rock surfaces were also active during daytime low tides, whilst in the shade.
Individuals travelled further during foraging excursions in winter (xˉ=85.53 cm) than in either spring (xˉ=55.7 cm) or summer (xˉ=48.8 cm) and also during spring low tides (xˉ=89.8 cm) compared with neaps (xˉ=40.9 cm). H. pectunculus exhibited rigid homing to a fixed scar within a crevice, and feeding excursions were found to consist of three distinct phases:
a relatively rapid outward phase, a much slower foraging phase and a rapid homeward phase. Whether or not these limpets graze
throughout an excursion is not known. Foraging was always highly directional, with a mean vector which took limpets onto an
area of the rock face with the highest microalgal biomass. The fact that H. pectunculus took advantage of optimal feeding areas and memorized their location to enable return visits suggests a learning component
in herbivorous gastropod foraging behaviour.

A comparative study was made of the entrained (12:12 LD) and endogenous (DD) respiratory rhythms of 8 species of cardinal fishes. Volumetric respirometers, designed specifically for long-term measurements of oxygen uptake by small fishes under controlled conditions, were used during standard 5 day experiments. Despite some individual variation, certain species-specific and genus-specific patterns of respiration emerged. Each species showed a persistant (advancing) rhythm of oxygen consumption during 3 days of DD. Light appeared to be the Zeitgeber, with the light-dark transition phasing the nocturnal peaks and the dark-light transition possibly phasing the diurnal ones. Genus-specific and species-specific trends in field behavior, habitat selection, and distribution were studied. There were correlations between the field behavior and the entrained respiratory rhythms of these nocturnally active fishes. Entrained and endogenous rhythms of each species showed characteristic similarities and were interpreted as integral components of a level of organization evolved for nocturnal life in the shallow marine environment. 相似文献

Male migratory birds tend to be more faithful than females to previous breeding sites, suggesting sex differences in costs or benefits of dispersal. In Illinois, greater site fidelity by male yellow-headed blackbirds (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus) was associated with reduced reproductive success the following year for dispersers relative to non-dispersers. Dispersing females suffered no reduction in reproductive success the following year. Males that attracted few social mates, and thus had low reproductive success, were more likely to disperse, whereas females dispersed in response to low-patch reproductive success, regardless of their individual performance. Males that dispersed appeared to be successful acquiring territories because none was observed as a floater. The rate of dispersal by males in this low-density population was greater than in more dense populations where dispersing males may be less successful at acquiring territories. Despite success at obtaining territories, males that dispersed acquired territories on the periphery of wetlands where fewer females nested, resulting in lower reproductive success. In the second year after dispersing, however, males moved onto more central territories where they acquired larger harems. Thus, dispersal by males may be a long-term strategy requiring at least 2 years for benefits to be realized. Long-term success was enhanced because dispersing males moved to wetlands on which reproductive success was higher than on the wetlands they left. In addition to demonstrating that both individual and patch reproductive success affect dispersal decisions, these data indicate that when evaluating costs and benefits of dispersal, researchers should use a time frame beyond 1 year. 相似文献

Osteological development of the vertebral column and of the fins in Diplodus

The osteological development of vertebral column and fins in white sea bream, Diplodus sargus (Linnaeus, 1758) was studied. Vertebral ontogeny started at 5.7 mm total length (TL, post-fixation), with the formation of the first cartilaginous neural and haemal arches, and was completed by the full attainment of dorsal ribs (20.8 mm TL). The formation of vertebral centra occurred between 7.3 and 9.4 mm TL, but was fully completed only after the development of post- and pre-zygapophyses (26.0 mm TL). Pectoral supports were the first fin elements that started to develop (3.8 mm TL), followed by those of the caudal fin (5.2 mm TL), dorsal and anal fins (6.7 mm TL), and then by those of the pelvic fin (9.5 mm TL). The caudal fin of D. sargus was the first to develop fin rays and attain the full count of lepidotrichia (5.6-7.8 mm TL), but the last to attain the full count of dermatotrichia (7.9-16.0 mm TL). The next fins starting to present rays were the pectoral (6.5 mm TL) and the dorsal and anal fins (7.5 mm TL), while the pelvic fins were the last (11.5 mm TL). Following the caudal lepidotrichia (7.8 mm TL), the anal (10.5 mm TL), dorsal (12.0 mm TL), pectoral (11.4 mm TL) and pelvic fins (12.5 mm TL) were the next with fully completed ray counts. Finally, fin meristics were fully developed with the caudal dermatotrichia. The results are discussed in comparison with the fin and vertebral ontogeny of other teleosts. 相似文献

Genetic divergence and phylogenetic inferences in five species of Mugilidae (Pisces: Perciformes) 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Allozyme electrophoresis was used to compare the genetic divergence of global populations of Mugil cephalus Linnaeus, 1758 and two congeneric [M.␣curema Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1836; M. gyrans (Jordan & Gilbert, 1885)] and two more distantly related [Liza ramada (Risso, 1826); Xenomugil thoburni (Jordan & Starks, 1896)] species on the basis of 18 enzyme loci. The amount of genetic divergence among the species examined
is in agreement with their present systematic status, the differences being larger among non-congeneric species than among
species of the same genus. Intraspecific genetic distances in M. cephalus (average Nei's D= 0.154), although higher than those reported for conspecific populations of fish, appear to be small when compared to the
interspecific values among mugilid species (0.821 ≤ Nei's D ≤ 1.744). Phylogenetic trees obtained by genetic distance methods and discrete character parsimony analysis were of similar
topology, except for the relationships within the genus Mugil and for the arrangement of M. cephalus populations.

The mullet fish, Liza klunzingeri, commercially important and widely relished by Kuwaiti residents, and the stressed ecosystem in Kuwait Bay instigated us to conduct toxicity and bioaccumulation tests on heavy metals (Pb, Ni, V, Cu and Fe). Among five metals, Pb had the lowest observed effect concentration (LOEC) at 1 μg?l ?1. Using multi-factor Probit analysis, toxicity tests (72 h) on L. klunzingeri reared in filtered sea water in the laboratory showed Pb with maximum effect at median lethal concentration (LC50) followed by V, Ni, Cu and Fe. Their bioaccumulation factor (BAF) was in the sequence Pb>V>Fe>Cu and Ni. For fish exposed for 30 d, bioaccumulation exhibited increasing metal levels in liver followed by gills and muscles. These results suggest the potential use of L. klunzingeri as a bioindicator of metal pollution in the future. 相似文献

Field and laboratory studies compared two features of larval behavior in a pair of predacious sisterspecies of green lacewings: one (Chrysopa slossonae) a specialist on a single species of colonial aphids (the woolly alder aphid) that occur on branches and trunks of alder trees, the other (C. quadripunctata) a general aphid feeder whose primary prey is dispersed on foliage of diverse types of trees. First, a few hours after hatching, larvae of the two species develop significantly different phototactic responses; the differences correspond well with the spatial distributions of their prey. Most C. slossonae exhibited negative phototaxis, a response that helps move hatchlings inward on alder trees toward the woolly alder aphid colonies, whereas most C. quadripunctata hatchlings showed positive orientation to light, a response that tends to keep them in tree canopies with their prey. Second, in greenhouse experiments, a significantly greater proportion of C. slossonae larvae (second instars) molted within woolly alder aphid colonies and remained with the aphids than did C. quadripunctata larvae. These differences indicate that the specialist larvae have evolved a high degree of behavioral fidelity to their prey. However, larvae (second instars) of the two species that were released near ant-tended woolly alder aphid colonies in the field had similar recovery (= survival) rates.
