Different ways of obtaining information about minimal area are studied. The classical species-area curve lacks objectivity. Curves based on similarity indices are objective, in so far that a critical threshold can be defined, where one admits that the minimal area is reached. Comparison is made between Sørensen's qualitative similarity index (based on presence-absence) and Kulczynski's quantitative similarity index (based on numbers of individuals and/or percent cover). In the shallowwater rocky habitats studied, two types of community were distinguished. The first, miniaturized communities are found in dark caves. Their minimal area is about 4,000 cm2. The second, coarser, communities occur on open rocks, either horizontal, sloping or vertical. Their minimal area is 20,000 cm2. Calculations were based mainly on Octocorallia (Coelenterata) which are assumed to be characteristic of the community as a whole.  相似文献

Plankton samples were taken from January to June 1987 in Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaiian Islands, with a free-fall plankton net, to investigate the fine-scale distribution of larval fishes around coral reefs. Daytime samples indicated that the postflexion larvae of two gobiids (Psilogobius mainlandi and an unidentified species) were significantly more abundant at stations immediately adjacent to reefs (near-reef) than at stations in open water off the reef (off-reef). These postflexion gobiid larvae appeared to be capable of resisting advection and dispersal while remaining in the water column near suitable adult habitats. The larvae of Foa brachygramma (Apogonidae) and Encrasicholina purpurea (Engraulidae) were significantly more abundant at off-reef stations than at near-reef stations. Nighttime samples indicated that the gobiid larvae depend on visual cues to remain near the reef. The horizontal distributions of F. brachygramma and E. purpurea larvae appeared to be related to their vertical positioning. These data suggest that typical ichthyoplankton surveys which do not sample close to adult fish habitats would greatly underestimate the abundances of larvae such as the gobiids.  相似文献

From 1980 through 1983 sea urchin mass mortalities were at least 245 000 t. The habitat released to seaweed is expected to support a standing crop of 1.8 million tons and an annual production of 7 million tons. An extensive survey of 2 900 km of Nova Scotia shoreline revealed that 511 km2 of habitat (rock bottom less than 15 m deep) was available to seaweeds. Areas most exposed to ocean swells bordered 26% of the shoreline length but included 82% of the seaweed habitat. Before mass mortalities, seaweed refuges from sea urchin grazing included very sheltered habitats, very exposed habitats, and boulders set among shifting sand; however, these were less than 10% of the total habitat. In the 1 to 2 years following mass mortalities seaweed cover and occurrence increased significantly for all of five categories of wave exposure and for six of seven algal taxa respectively. In at least three locations the sea urchin population began to recover as a result of larval recruitment but in 1983 was again reduced by disease. Sea urchins appear to lack natural resistance to disease, at least at warm temperatures. In the laboratory all sea urchins collected from the Bay of Fundy, southern Nova Scotia, eastern Newfoundland, and an area recovering from mass mortalities died following exposure to diseased animals. Also, field mortalities included a wide variety of habitats. Interviews of Nova Scotia lobster fishermen revealed that sea urchin mass mortalities have probably occurred before in this century, but infrequently.  相似文献

Dramatic shifts in community composition occur between vertical and horizontal rocky surfaces in subtidal environments worldwide, yet the forces mediating this transition are poorly understood. Vertical rock walls are often covered by lush, diverse communities of sessile suspension-feeding invertebrates, while adjacent horizontal substrates are dominated by algae, or corals in the tropics. Multiple factors, including light, sedimentation, water flow, and predation have been proposed to explain this pattern, but experimental tests of these hypotheses are lacking. We manipulated light level and predation to test whether variation in these mechanisms could be responsible for the shift in composition of sessile communities between vertical and horizontal surfaces in the rocky subtidal Gulf of Maine. Shaded horizontally oriented granite plots were dominated by invertebrates (e.g., ascidians, barnacles, bryozoans) after 25 months. Unshaded plots were dominated by macroalgae, which was virtually absent in shaded plots. Exclusion of grazers with cages had no effect on percent cover of invertebrates or algae. Preferential settlement of invertebrate larvae to shaded plots, due to larval behaviors such as negative phototaxis, did not seem to play a role. Shading likely affects post-settlement mortality of invertebrates by alleviating competition for space with algae, although greater abundance of micropredators in algal-dominated communities could also be important. Communities on shaded plots lacked many taxa present on natural wall communities, likely due to greater disturbance on horizontal substrates and/or lack of sufficient time for colonization of these taxa. These results suggest that light plays a key role in controlling the structure, composition, and function of shallow subtidal communities.  相似文献

Water quality characteristics, benthic macro-invertebrates and microbial communities of three first order streams in South West Nigeria were investigated to assess the effects of refined petroleum five months after spillage. All physical and chemical conditions except temperature and pH were significantly different (P<0.01) at the upstream control stations and impacted stations reflecting the perturbational stress. The benthic macro-invertebrate fauna were dominated by arthropods, but the faunal spectrum was dissimilar at all the stations studied. Sampling stations at the epicentre of the spill showed considerable reduction in faunal compositions and relative abundance. Generally, the microbial density and diversity were highest in both soil and water samples from impacted sites than in control sites. There was a significantly higher proportion (P < 0.05) of hydrocarbon utilizers in soil than in water samples in all stations except in samples from stations (P<0.05).  相似文献

Spatial and temporal variation in recruitment of the compound ascidian Aplidium stellatum was examined on a shallow-water limestone outcropping in the Northeastern Gulf of Mexico from 1983 to 1985. Fifty-two percent of the recruits appeared on vertical surfaces, which were rare at this site. In the laboratory, tadpole larvae of A. stellatum consistently settled on vertical vs horizontal surfaces in a 2 to 1 ratio, regardless of the area of vertical surface offered. This settlement response was insufficient to account entirely for the field recruitment pattern, suggesting greater mortality of newly-settled individuals or larvae on horizontal vs vertical surfaces. Fifty-six percent of the variation in recruitment over 21 months could be explained by variation in the percentage of zooids brooding larvae in adult colonies. Over 28 consecutive months, the percentage of zooids brooding larvae was positively correlated with egg counts of the previous month (r 2=0.75), which in turn were weakly correlated with monthly average water temperature (r 2=0.36). These results suggest that larval production contributed substantially to temporal variation in recruitment of A. stellatum. The short larval life of tadpoles of A. stellatum and the relative isolation of the population were probably responsible for the correlation between recruitment and larval production.  相似文献

This study examined patterns of faunal stratification between vertical strata by partitioning subtidal macroalgal communities into vertically contiguous (and hence paired) canopy and understorey habitats. Such floristic strata are often clearly defined in temperate subtidal communities and have been the focus of a range of other, primarily botanical, studies. Previous studies that have touched upon this subject have used statistical tests that require spatially independent samples, yet have collected samples that are often spatially contiguous and therefore not statistically independent. Here an analytical approach for examining faunal stratification in subtidal macroalgal assemblages using split-plot ANOVA for univariate data and a novel multivariate test suitable for analysing assemblage-level paired-sampled data is proposed. Differences in faunal assemblage structure between habitats were primarily attributed to the distribution of two functional feeding groups: filter-feeding and scavenging arthropods. Filter-feeders were more abundant amongst the canopy, whereas scavengers were more abundant in the understorey. No pattern was detected for herbivorous arthropods. These patterns are consistent with the feeding ecology of these functional groups and reflect expected differences in the relative availability of trophic resources between habitats, commensurate with the physical structure of the environments. Contrary to expectation, understorey algal habitats supported faunal assemblages that were as diverse, or more diverse than the canopy habitats, despite comprising smaller habitable spaces (in terms of algal biomass) and generally supporting fewer faunal individuals. Trophic stratification of epifaunal assemblages is suggested as a mechanism whereby faunal diversity is enhanced in these environments.  相似文献

对松嫩草甸不同退化程度生境的几种代表植物群落土壤磷素状况的研究表明,各群落相同土层的全磷含量没有显著的差异,说明土壤磷库具有较强的弹性,土壤退化落后于地上植物群落的退化.各群落土壤全磷的季节变化相似,均经历迅速累积,达到峰值后下降,之后又有一个缓慢积累的过程.羊草、寸草苔和碱茅群落全磷含量随土层的加深而减少,虎尾草群落土壤全磷聚集于10~20cm土层.随退化程度的加重,土壤速效磷含量增加,虎尾草群落土壤速效磷占全磷的比重最高(2.8%),表明退化生境植物群落对速效磷素的利用并不充分.各群落土壤微生物量磷含量均高于速效磷含量,其季节动态均为单峰曲线,峰值出现在8月.虎尾草群落土壤微生物量磷在10~20cm的土层最多,其他群落土壤微生物量磷在0~10cm土层的含量最多.灰色分析的结果表明,土壤速效磷的形成主要受到土壤养分,尤其是碳、氮养分的影响;而土壤温度、水分状况、酸碱状况和盐化程度等因素对土壤微生物量磷的影响较强.图2表3参26  相似文献

Samples of Benthosema pterotum (Alcock) were obtained from the Arabian Sea (1976, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1984), off Mozambique (1978) and from the Bay of Bengal (1979). The sexual maturity stages are described. For females, the size of the largest oocytes was found to be most useful for size of the largest oocytes was found to be most useful for assessing maturity. Mature and spawning fish were found in all seasons. Samples from November 1983 differed from all others in having very few mature females. A few apparently spent fish were observed in July to August 1979 and November 1983. Some females mature at 25 mm and males at 20 mm, whereas others can still be immature at 45 and 40 mm, respectively. Of the total number of stations, four had significantly more males than females, twelve significantly more females, and forty-seven displayed no difference in the sex ratios. The vertical migration of the mature and spawning fish did not differ significantly from that of other individuals. Batch fecundity ranged from ca. 200 to 3 000 eggs fish ranging from 27 to 52 mm, relative fecundity from ca. 2 000 to 7 000 eggs g-1 maternal dry weight. There are indications that B. pterotum spawns only once, but no firm conclusions could be drawn.  相似文献

Growth and compounds of carbon and nitrogen of the northeast Pacific kelpPleurophycus gardneri (Laminariales, Laminariaceae) were assessed before, during and after the 1983-El Niño Souther Oscillation event. This 2-yr study provides evidence that reduced ambient levels of nitrate and phosphate from March until August/September, 1983, in combination with elevated seawater temperature, caused a significant impairment of growth. Blade surface area, blade length, total fresh weight, and dry weight on an areal basis were significantly reduced in 1983 compared to 1982 (P<0.01). They were also significantly smaller in 1984 than in 1983 (P<0.05). The C:N values obtained both in May and July 1983 were considerably higher than in 1982, while those in May 1984 were strikingly smaller than in both 1982 and 1983. Mannitol content of the mibrid in May 1983, exhibited the highest levels recorded during the 2-yr study period, with ca. 19% dry weight and significantly exceeded mannitol content measured in May 1982 (average: 13%) and in May 1984 (average: 8%). The concentration factor for internal vs external nitrate in the midrib was 700 x ambient in May 1982 and 1984 compared with 20 x in May 1983. Ninhydrin positive substances (NPS) averaged 117 mol g dry wt-1 in May 1984 compared with ca. 50 mol in May 1982 and 1983. The pigment ratios chlorophyllc: chlorophylla and fucoxanthin: chlorophylla in May 1983 were similar to those obtained in 1982, but were significantly different in May 1984. It is suggested that the interactive effects of temperature stress and nutrient limitation in 1983 caused a disruptive influence on C- and N-metabolism ofPleurophycus gardneri, which still affected growth performance in 1984.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of tintinnines was studied in the open sea of the South Adriatic at a station near the city of Dubrovnik (Station 12) in the period from 1979–1980 as well as at 11 stations during a cruise in January 1980. Samples were taken with the 53-m Nansen type net equipped with a closing system. The hauls were taken in 7 vertical layers. In the area investigated 72 species of tintinnines were observed. Six dominating species contributed from 30 to 93%, an average of 63% of the total numerical abundance of tintinnines. Based on the occurrence of the majority of the population of individual species going from the surface towards the sea bottom, the tintinnines have been divided into 5 groups. Most of the species (42), presenting more than 90% of the population, were found in the layer between the surface and a depth of 100 m. Other species were found in deeper layers (rarely or almost never at the surface).  相似文献

Larvae of Clupea harengus were reared from spawning herring caught in March 1982 and 1983 in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland. An infra0red observation technique was used to record the behaviour of larval herring both in shallow dishes using a top view and in a tank 2 m deep using a side view. The amount of time larvae spent swimming, which was minimum in complete darkness, increased with increasing light intensity and as the larvae grew. Maximum swimming speeds of feeding larvae were recorded at light intensities between 10 and 100 lux. The presence of food organisms (Artemia sp., Brazilian strain) at light intensities below the feeding threshold (0.1 lux) caused an increase in the proportion of time spent active, but light intensities above the threshold had different effects, depending on developmental stage: larvae of 12 mm increased swimming speed, but 21 mm larvae decreased speed. In the 2 m deep tank in darkness, larvae displayed inactive periods wherein they sank head first, interspersed with periods of upward swimming. As light intensity increased, vertical swimming was replaced by horizontal swimming. These results are discussed with reference to food searching and vertical migration of larval herring in the sea.  相似文献

Diel changes in fine-scale vertical distributions of three calanoid copepods Metridia pacifica, M. okhotensis and Pleuromamma scutullata in the subarctic waters of the western North Pacific were examined. Sampling was carried out in June and August 1983, at two stations in Oyashio water using a Longhurst-Hardy Plankton Recorder (LHPR). Sampling, down to about 1 000 m, was repeated four to five times at intervals of several hours. Vertical resolution was 5 to 40 m. Copepods were concentrated in two strata, the surface (0 to 60 m) and the mesopelagic (200 to 300 m) layers, throughout the day at both stations. Younger M. pacifica (C III and C IV) were dominant in both strata. Although most female C V and adult females demonstrated diel vertical migration at 20 to 30 m h-1, a significant number of females did not migrate upward but remained in the deep stratum at night. The same trend was evident in M. ohkotensis and P. scutullata. Foregut content observations indicated that feeding activities of the deep mode populations were as high as those of the surface mode, though food of deep individuals was different. Such a bimodal distribution may increase intraspecific diversity of copepod populations and is possibly why metridiid copepods dominate during late summer to winter in the relatively simple ecosystems of high latitudes.  相似文献

In order to determine the effects of bottom depth and water column structure on slope distributions, lanternfishes in the Cape Canyon and Cape Point Valley (eastern South Atlantic) and from the Feni Ridge and Hebridean Terrace (eastern North Atlantic) were sampled with commercial midwater nets fished 10 m above the bottom at preselected depths. Fifty-one species were taken in the eastern South Atlantic and 17 species in the eastern North Atlantic. Analyses of the samples included clustering and multi-dimensional scaling ordination of the root-root transformed densities using the Bray-Curtis similarity index. In the eastern South Atlantic (March 1988), where the horizontal and vertical temperature structuring of the water column was marked, oceanic myctophids were not taken shallower than the 300 m-depth horizon and less than one-third of the total number of species occurred inside the 500 m-depth horizon. Temperatures and bottom depths correlated with the downslope distributions of the species. Down-slope zonation was apparent. In the eastern North Atlantic (May 1983), where the temperature structure of the water column was similar at all stations, no oceanic species were taken at the 200 m-depth horizon and more than one-half of the total number of species was taken at the 300 m-depth horizon. Species distributions correlated with depth, and downslope zonation was not evident. The data sets, as well as information from the West Florida slope, suggest that both the depth and the regional temperature structure of the water column effect the upper slope distributions of oceanic myctophids. Long-slope, ribbon distribution patterns (generalized down-slope zonation) in myctophids may therefore be localized artifacts produced by the interaction of these factors.  相似文献

How changes in environmental complexity and heterogeneity affect beta diversity is poorly known. We investigated patterns of beta diversity in subtidal assemblages of algae and invertebrates in the northwest Mediterranean in relation to inclination of the substratum and sedimentation. Vertical and horizontal substrata supported distinct assemblages under low, but not under heavy, ambient loads of sediment. To test the hypothesis that sediment reduced the dissimilarity between assemblages, sedimentation was increased experimentally in plots established on vertical and horizontal surfaces at sites experiencing low ambient levels of sedimentation. Patterns were compared to those occurring at unmanipulated sites and at sites exposed to heavy loads of sediment about 2 km apart. After one year, assemblages on vertical substrata were indistinguishable from those occurring on flat surfaces at manipulated sites and both converged toward those occurring at sites exposed to heavy loads of sediment. Control sites still supported distinct assemblages on vertical and horizontal substrata by the end of the experiment. Similar effects of sediment were observed on recovering assemblages in experimental clearings. These results show that sediment increased similarity in assemblages overriding the influence of habitat complexity on beta diversity at small and large spatial scales.  相似文献

Morphological variation and vertical distribution of Fucus vesiculosus were quantified at several sites in the Finnish archipelago (Baltic Sea). F. vesiculosus samples were obtained from skerries at geographical distances of 1 km or more (large scale) and at intervals of ca 100 m around a single island (small scale). The results were examined in relation to wave exposure, calculated by Baardseth and effective fetch cartographic methods. Despite the fact that the exposure indices were calculated differently they correlated strongly. Vegetative morphological characteristics of F. vesiculosus illustrate the morphological differences both within and between exposure gradients. The tallest and widest F. vesiculosus plants were found at the sheltered end of the large-scale exposure gradient. Those from equally sheltered sites of the island were smaller in all respects. Thus, the trend from small narrow plants to large wide sheltered plants was expressed differently over the different geographical scales. Consequently localities with similar exposure indices may have morphologically different F. vesiculosus populations. Shores with similar cartographic exposure indices can be different in nature. Underwater topography and shore locations, either close to the mainland or at the outermost sites of the archipelago, affect the exposure. Although a sheltered shore is indicated, the sublittoral zone may be quite exposed to the movements of water. In contrast, in an open shore environment underwater rocks, boulders and shallow water areas can provide sheltered habitats. The depth range of the F. vesiculosus belt exhibited two distinctive patterns. At sheltered sites, around islands in the outermost reaches of the archipelago F. vesiculosus can grow to a maximum depth of 5 m. In exposed habitats the belt becomes narrower, reaching a maximum depth of 3 m. Closer to the mainland F. vesiculosus is found at exposed sites to a maximum depth of 5 m; the depth range at sheltered sites is narrower, only reaching depths of 2 m or less. In conclusion, the changes in plant morphology and in the vertical belt distribution are similar to each other along both gradients at the exposed ends of the wave action spectrum; however, the two gradients diverge at the sheltered ends of the spectrum. Data are presented on the biomass of the invertebrate megafauna at 22 stations on the continental slope in the Porcupine Seabight (PSB) (northeast Atlantic Ocean). Samples were collected between 1980 and 1982. Several units of biomass are used, all of which illustrate a decrease by a factor of about 30 from 500 to 4100 m. Lognormal curves were fitted to the data, the gradients of which were very similar for all biomass units and similar to the value for a transect down the continental slope in the western Atlantic. Biomass levels in the PSB are compared with those from other deep-sea environments. Some published values are more than ten times higher than the values reported here, while others are less than a tenth. The reasons for these differences and trends are discussed in terms of food supply. Sampling variability was examined at two stations, but by chance one (at 1300 m) appeared to encompass a sharp faunal discontinuity of the dominant fauna and the other (at 4000 m) contained very small numbers of large animals. For these reasons, sample variability was high at the repeat stations. Suspension-feeders and crustaceans dominated the biomass at upper-slope depths, while echinoderms were dominant on the middle and lower slope. As a result of this phyletic change, there was a small but insignificant decrease in mean body weight with increasing depth. Within phyla there was also a small but insignificant decrease with depth. If large species are excluded from the biomass/depth regression, the gradient changes considerably, demonstrating the increasing importance of small species at greater depths. The size distribution of megafaunal biomass was examined at several stations. This indicated that the megafauna form a functional group distinct from the macrofauna, just as the macrofauna are distinct from the meiofauna.  相似文献

Patella vulgata is one of the most common limpet species on rocky shores throughout the north-eastern Atlantic. Foraging activity of this species has been described during various different diel and tidal phases and several factors have been suggested that might influence the timing of its activity. Among these, inclination of rock surfaces seems to have a clear role, with limpets on horizontal rocks being active during daylight at high water, while limpets on vertical rocks were active during night-time low water. However, by comparing the results of previous investigations it is difficult to separate clearly the effect of any single factor from the effects of their interactions. In the present paper we investigated the simultaneous influence of height on the shore, slope of rock surface and date of sampling (August–September and March–April) on the behaviour of a population of P. vulgata on the Isle of Man (UK). The study was carried out using modern telemetric methods, allowing the activity patterns of limpets to be recorded for long periods of time. The results showed that limpets concentrated their activity during two distinct temporal windows—daytime tide-in and night-time tide-out—while no significant activity was observed during daytime tide-out or night-time tide-in. The observed behaviour appeared to be driven by complex interactions among the three factors examined, and the influence of rock slope alone was not so strong as to override the effect of other factors completely. In addition, a key finding of this study was the conspicuous variability in the individual behaviour of P. vulgata. The greatest level of variability was observed in limpets on vertical surfaces on the upper shore, which showed an extreme switch in behavioural patterns, according to date of sampling (daylight/tide-in foraging during the spring and night-time/tide-out foraging during late summer). In addition, individuals apparently sharing the same set of conditions (inclination, height on the shore and sampling date) differed in their behaviour, and a given behavioural pattern was not always shared by all individuals from a given group. Finally, variability was also observed at the intra-individual level since the same individual could be active during different tidal and diel phases. In conclusion, although the existence of endogenous rhythms has previously been demonstrated in this species, our data clearly show that P. vulgata was able to modulate its behavioural patterns in relation to a variety of exogenous determinants.Communicated by R. Pollution in the marine protected area of North Sporades Islands was investigated in July 1997. Salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, dissolved inorganic nutrients, organic carbon, hydrocarbons as well as dissolved and particulate trace metals were determined at 15 offshore and coastal stations. Dissolved organic carbon and inorganic nutrient concentrations indicate the mesotrophic character of the investigated waters. The dissolved forms of nitrogen were slightly higher at coastal stations. Dissolved and particulate Cu, Zn and Ni, were higher in coastal stations, whereas concentrations of Pb were generally low and likely of atmospheric origin. Dissolved/Dispersed petroleum hydrocarbons (DDPH) were close to detection limits at all stations. Temperature and salinity vertical profiles, nutrient and trace metal concentrations revealed the presence of a slight influence of the Black Sea water coming from Dardanelles straits.  相似文献

The demersal fish community was sampled seasonally in three habitats (beach, raft and middle) of the inner, middle, and outer Ria de Arosa (NW Spain). A total of 73 species of demersal fish, dominated by the family Gobiidae, were found. There were no important seasonal changes in abundance, with similarity values always higher than 60% between samples from two different sampling periods. Raft stations in the ria show the highest values of abundance all year, containing almost 1 individual m-2 in winter. The highest diversity indices were those from beach areas (2.11 to 2.27) and the lowest ones those from middle areas (1.13 to 1.86). Similarity indices and factorial analysis revealed three major groupings of species and samples, related to water depth and nature of the bottom.  相似文献
