Growth of sporelings of Hypnea cervicornis J. Agardh and H. chordacea Kuetzing in response to gradients of selected environmental factors has been investigated. The sporelings of H. cervicornis tolerated higher levels of the tested parameters (e.g. salinity and temperature) than those of H. chordacea. In all the treatments, the sporelings of H. cervicornis grew significantly faster than those of H. chordacea. The biology and ecology of the Antarctic scallop Adamussium colbecki has been investigated on the west side of McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, principally at Explorers Cove, during the austral summer of 1981–1982. This conspicuous benthic invertebrate exhibits highest densities, 85 individuals m-2, in shallow (4 to 6 m) water. Densities decrease to 20 m-2 at 30 m. Biomass levels are highest in shallow water, 1 600 g wet wt m-2. Provisional growth information suggests that 8 cm individuals are about 12 yr old. Mortality is apparently caused chiefly by a hyposaline lens of seawater, which forms under the sea ice during the summer melt; predators do not appear to be important. High biomass levels and a short generation time suggest that A. colbecki is an important species in a very productive community on the west side of McMurdo Sound. The shallow benthos of Explorers Cove is an important exception to the generalization that Antarctic ecosystems are dominated by indigestible filter-feeders.  相似文献

Main effects and interactions of light and temperature on rates of growth (), net photosynthesis (Ps), and dark respiration (R) of the red seaweedGracilaria tikvahiae were investigated in outdoor, nutrient-replete continuous-flow seawater culture chambers. Below 15°C,G. tikvahiae did not grow and between 15° and 30°C, both main effects and interactions of light and temperature on and Ps were significant, which explains the occurrence of this alga as a summer annual in its northern range. Temperature interacted with light (I) through its influence on the vs I and Ps vs I curves. The initial slope of the vs I curve, , the light saturation intensity, Is, and maximum growth rate, max, were all significantly lowerat 15°C compared to 20°, 25°, or 30°C. Maximum values of max, the Ps:R ratio and the net photosynthesis:gross photosynthesis ratio (Ps:Pg) all occurred at 25°C, suggesting that this is the best temperature for growth ofG. tikvahiae. Values for Pmax increased up to 30°C, indicating that the temperature for maximum growth and net photosynthesis are not the same forG. tikvahiae. Significant photoinhibition of growth and photosynthesis at full incident sunlight (I0) occurred at 15°C but not at 20°, 25°, or 30°C. Steele's equation fit the 15°C vs I data best, whereas the hyperbolic tangent function fit the 20°, 25°, and 30°C data best. Main effects and interactionof light intensity and temperature on rates of R were also significant (P<0.001). R was highly intercorrelated with and Ps (0.86r0.94), indicating that R inG. tikvahiae is primarily regulated by growth rate and not temperatureper se. Environmental factors that regulate growth, such as light intensity, exert a great influence on R inG. tikvahiae.  相似文献

The effect of light intensity, pH and carbonic anhydrase (CA) inhibitors on photosynthesis of the red marine macroalgae Solieria filiformis (Kützing) Gabrielson, collected from Taliarte (Gran Canaria, Canary Islands) in 1991, has been investigated. Plants taken from the sea (wild phenotype) developed spherical morphology (ball phenotype) after 2 mo culture in aerated tanks. The photosynthetic oxygen evolution in the wild phenotype was saturated at 100 mol photons m-2s-1, while the ball phenotype displayed saturation at 200 mol photons m-2s-1. The inhibitors of total CA activity (6-ethoxizolamide) and extracellular CA activity (dextran-bound sulfonamide) inhibited photosynthesis at pH 8.2, to 90 and 50% respectively, in both phenotypes. No inhibition of the photosynthetic oxygen evolution was detected at pH 6.5. CA activity was associated with both supernatant and pellet fractions of crude extracts of S. filiformis. The rate of alkalization of the medium by the algae was dependent on light intensity. We suggest that carbon dioxide is the general form of inorganic carbon transported across the plasmamembrane in S. filiformis. HCO3 transport into the cell takes place simultaneously by an indirect mechanism (dehydration to CO2 catalyzed by CAext) and by direct uptake. Extracellular (CAext) and intracellular (CAint) CAs are involved in the mechanisms of inorganic carbon assimilation by S. filiformis.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of carposporophyte development is described for the red algaCaulacanthus ustulatus (Turner) Kützing collected at Epanomi (Gulf of Thessaloniki, Greece) and studied in 1988/1989. Following presumed fertilization the diploid nucleus is transferred to the auxiliary cell which expands and cuts off several multinucleate gonimoblast initials. The gonimoblast initials are distributed around the periphery of the cystocarpic cavity and divide further to produce generative gonimoblast cells. The latter cleave repeatedly to form clusters of carpospores. Thus, carposporophyte development proceeds inwardly. The first formed gonimoblast cell is transformed into a storage gonimoblast cell containing large quantities of starch granules and presumably functioning to supply nutrients. A fusion cell is never formed. Gonimoblast initials contain typical red algal proplastids and numerous sacs and/or vesicles originating from cytoplasmic concentric membranes.Please address all correspondence and requests for reprints to Dr S. Dry weight levels of the red alga Hypnea musciformis (Wulfen) Lamouroux from Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coastal sites in florida, USA were lowest in the late winter and early spring, increasing through the summer and highest in the fall. There was a two-month lag in the Gulf coast population's dry weight pattern, indicating differing growth patterns. Chlorophyll a, phycoerythrin and phycoerythrin/chlorophyll a ratios were highest in the winter and lowest in the summer for both populations. Total pigment levels for H. musciformis from the Atlantic coast site were significantly greater than those of the Gulf coast. Protein and carbohydrate percentages were inversely related in both populations, with carbohydrate levels highest in summer and protein levels highest in winter. The Gulf coast population contained significantly more protein than the Atlantic coast plants. Carrageenan levels were highest in spring and lowest in fall, the Atlantic coast population generally had higher levels than the Gulf coast population. The differences in seasonal patterns and levels of the chemical constituents were reflected by distinct morphological characteristics for each population. The Atlantic coast population was larger, darker, more coarse in texture and possessed more crozier branch tips than the Gulf coast plants. These distinctions represent acclimitization responses that relate to habitat differences.  相似文献

Respiration rates of Hypnea musciformis (Wulfen) Lamouroux in Florida, USA, generally increased with increased temperature. Gulf coast H. musciformis respired at significantly higher rates than the Atlantic coast population, which exhibited a region of temperature independence between 24°–32°C. Respiration rates were highest in the fall and winter, during the periods of rapid growth. Respiration rates were lowest in the summer indicating a period of storage and low metabolism. Photosynthetic responses to various levels of light and temperature indicated that the Gulf coast population was more tolerant to high light intensities than the Atlantic coast population. Maximum photosynthetic responses for both populations occurred between 24° and 32°C which corresponds to the shallow slope region of the respiration-temperature curves. The results indicate that water temperature rather than light intensity is a significant factor in modifying seasonal photosynthetic capacities. The greatest seasonal variation in photosynthetic responses occurred at the light-temperature levels of highest responses while little seasonal variation was demonstrated at tolerance limits.  相似文献

The process of reproduction (multiple fission) of the megalospheric gamont of Heterostegina depressa d'Orbigny, 1826 (Nummulitidae) is described. During this process, the protoplasm separates outside the parent test into the juveniles. The initial chambers receive some of the symbiotic algae from the parent protoplasm. The second chamber develops from the initial chamber by division, not by growth. The newly formed 2-chamber-stage receives a second set of symbiotic algae from the parent residual protoplasm. Thereafter, calcification takes place, and the first ectoplasm sheath is formed. The problem of alternation of generations is discussed. From the very small proportion of microspheric individuals found in Heterostegina species (fossil and recent) it is concluded that gamogony has been greatly reduced.  相似文献

Photosynthesis and respiration of 4 species of the marine red algal genus Polysiphonia were evaluated under a variety of light, temperature and salinity conditions. The manometric results were compared with the local distribution and abundance of each species. The species can be separated into two distinct categories based on their overall distribution and temperature optima: (1) cold water plants [P. lanosa (L.) Tandy and P. elongata (Hudson) Sprengel], with peak photosynthesis at 21° to 24°C, but with active photosynthesis as low as 5°C; (2) plants with warm-water affinities [P. nigrescens (Hudson) Greville and P. subtilissima Montagne], having photosynthetic optima at 27° to 30°C, and exhibiting little or no photosynthesis below 10°C. The plants from the first group exhibit thermal injury at temperatures of 25°C and show a narrow tolerance to low salinities during periods of high temperatures. The plants from the second group show thermal injury at 30°C and have a wider tolerance to low salinities. The horizontal distribution of the 4 Polysiphonia species within the Great Bay Estuary System of New Hampshire, USA, is primarily governed by their tolerances to high temperatures and low salinities. The temperature optimum for each of the species corresponds to its particular estuarine distribution. Thus, P. subtilissima, having the highest temperature optimum, penetrated furthest into the Estuary, while P. lanosa, having the lowest temperature optimum, was restricted to the more coastal stations. In Yemen, off the northwestern coast in the Gulf of Aden, the coralline algae Hydrolithon rupestre (Foslie) Penrose 1996 and H. murakoshii Iryu and Matsuda 1996 have been observed to overgrow and kill living Porites lutea Milne-Edwards and Haime, 1860. Similarly, Hydrolithon onkodes (Heydrich) Penrose and Woelkerling 1992 and H. rupestre were observed overgrowing Stylophora pistillata (Esper, 1797). Competitive interactions between P. lutea and H. murakoshii were monitored from 2006 to 2009 at two sites and showed an average linear growth of 8.3 (±1.9 SD) mm?year?1 over the coral. The small polyps of S. pistillata and P. lutea combined with putative chemical compounds produced by Hydrolithon spp. are likely to allow the coralline overgrowth. Although corallines can locally kill coral tissues, the CCA/coral interactions do not seem to affect the overall live coral cover at the study sites.  相似文献

The mineral composition of nine species of red calcareous algae (Corallinaceae, Rhodophyta) collected in the Adriatic Sea in 1987 and 1988 was examined by X-ray powder diffraction (counter diffractometer, monochromatized CuK radiation). In addition, a comparison between the calcareous algae from the north Adriatic (Rovinj area) and the central Adriatic (Kornati Islands) with regard to genus, species and environmental factors was undertaken. All analyzed samples contained magnesium calcite, which was dominant in all but in two cases, where aragonite was the main phase. Diffraction lines of magnesium calcite were broadened and shifted toward higher Bragg angles in relation to pure calcite. Supposing that in the calcite crystal lattice only magnesium replaces calcium, it follows that the fraction of magnesium in magnesium calcite, found from diffraction line shifts, would be 18 molar % (M%). Aragonite was dominant (75 to 80 M%) in two samples of Pseudolithophyllum expansum collected at Kornati Islands in 1987 and 1988. These two samples also contained magnesium calcite and a small fraction of calcite (5 to 10 M%). In other studied samples aragonite was detected in small fractions, up to 10 M%. The elemental analysis of corallinacean algae obtained by X-ray spectroscopy showed that the fraction of the metals Sr, Fe, Mn, Zn, Pb, Br, Cu and Rb was very small (15 to 2000 ppm). In most samples other expected minerals were detected in small fractions, such as sylvite (KCl, up to 2 M%), quartz (-SiO2, up to 2 M%) and magnesite (MgCO3, only in one sample, 1 M%). The results show that calcareous algae are able to deposit a mixture of magnesium calcite, calcite and aragonite. Such a large molar fraction of aragonite in the alga P. expansum, or in any other corallinacean algae, has not been noted in recent literature. It seems that a complexity of microclimatic and oceanographic factors may influence the diversity of two localities and cause some exchange in living organisms. In addition, the fact that under certain conditions the same organism is capable of forming different minerals from the same tissue (McConnaughey 1989) confirms our opinion that environmental effects are imprinted in the skeletal composition of calcareous algae P. expansum.  相似文献

Porphyra perforata J. Ag. was collected from a rocky land-fill site near Kitsilano Beach, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and was grown for 4 d in media with one of the following forms of inorganic nitrogen: NO 3 - , NH 4 + and NO 3 - plus NH 4 + and for 10 d in nitrogen-free media. Internal nitrogen accumulation (nitrate, ammonium, amino acids and soluble protein), nitrate and ammonium uptake rates, and nitrate reductase activity were measured daily. Short initial periods (10 to 20 min) of rapid ammonium uptake were common in nitrogen-deficient plants. In the case of nitrate uptake, initial uptake rates were low, increasing after 10 to 20 min. Ammonium inhibited nitrate uptake for only the first 10 to 20 min and then nitrate uptake rates were independent of ammonium concentration. Nitrogen starvation for 8 d overcame this initial suppression of nitrate uptake by ammonium. Nitrogen starvation also resulted in a decrease in soluble internal nitrate content and a transient increase in nitrate reductase activity. Little or no decrease was observed in internal ammonium, total amino acids and soluble protein. The cultures grown on nitrate only, maintained high ammonium uptake rates also. The rate of nitrate reduction may have limited the supply of nitrogen available for further assimilation. Internal nitrate concentrations were inversely correlated with nitrate uptake rates. Except for ammonium-grown cultures, internal total amino acids and soluble protein showed no correlation with uptake rates. Both internal pool concentrations and enzyme activities are required to interpret changes in uptake rate during growth.  相似文献

Jellyfish blooms or invasions could be detected in an early phase of development if the youngest medusa stages (ephyrae) and their early growth stages (post-ephyrae) were identifiable in plankton samples but a useful identification key for ephyrae in early growth stages is lacking for most species. In the present study, the identification characteristics of adult North Sea scyphomedusae (Aurelia aurita, Cyanea capillata, Cyanea lamarckii, Chrysaora hysoscella, Rhizostoma octopus) collected around the island of Helgoland (German Bight) in July?CAugust 2003 and 2004 are described. Planula larvae were measured and reared to polyps in the laboratory. The process of ephyrae development asexually produced by the polyps (strobilation) was photo-documented. Photographs of the ephyrae growth stages were combined with drawings of features useful for the species identification. The provided identification key allows discrimination among post-ephyrae from plankton samples, probably leading to conclusions on the development of jellyfish blooms and their causes.  相似文献

The phycocolloid from the red seaweed Corynomorpha prismatica J. Agardh (Cryptonemiales, Crateloupiaceae) has been investigated and found to show positive optical rotation ([] D 25 + 83o), to be soluble in potassium chloride solution, to have a total sulphate content of 18.6±1.2% in unmodified gel and 15.0±0.9% in gel modified with lime. Total phycocolloid yields of 17.6±1.6% and 32.2±3.0% were obtained in gel extraction without lime and with lime added, respectively. The infrared spectra of the phycocolloid showed a broad absorption band at 860 to 800 cm-1 and lacked single sharp peaks at 805 cm-1. The phycocolloid was concluded to be a carrageenan akin to the lambda-type.  相似文献

Specimens of Corallina officinalis L. were grown in the laboratory for 6 and 8 weeks at temperatures of 6°, 12°, 18°, and 25°C. After 6 weeks, the mean growth rates of main axes were 2.8 mm at 18°C, 2.9 mm at 12°C, and 0.2 mm at 5°C; no growth occurred at 25°C. At 6°C, growth increased with lower light intensities. The mean total increase in length of branchlets present when the plants were collected did not vary significantly at 12° and 18°C. At 12°C, axial intergenicula formed in culture produced more new branchlets than did field-grown intergenicula. Gracilaria chilensis exhibits noticeable intraclonal variation, some of which is presumed to result from mitotic recombinations or other types of DNA turnover associated with replication activities during cellular division. To test this, genetic variability (determined by multilocus fingerprinting markers using the randomly amplified polymorphic DNA technique, RAPD) and total growth were simultaneously measured over time in clonal replicates of G. chilensis incubated under controlled laboratory conditions. The results suggest that genetic variability increases as growth occurs and biomass accumulates, supporting the hypothesis of growth-related increases in genetic heterogeneity. For species massively propagated by thallus fragmentation in either naturally or farmed populations, growth-dependent genetic changes may constitute a powerful means of generating intra-population variation without thalli becoming reproductively mature, and, as a consequence, bypassing meiosis and/or sexual recombination. The ultrastructure of post-fertilization development of the red alga Callophyllis linearis (Kyl.) Abb. & Norr. of the Kallymeniaceae showed that the Kallymeniaceae are more closely related to the Cryptomeniales than to the Gigartinales. The auxiliary cell produces multinucleate gonimoblast initials which divide to produce generative gonimoblast cells. These cells undergo repeated cleavages to form clusters of carpospore initials, which finally differentiate into carpospores. Carpospore differentiation is simple and occurs in three developmental stages. In the first stage, young carpospores are avacuolate, contain a large nucleus, have few undeveloped plastids and exhibit incipient dictyosome activity. During the intermediate stage, plastids develop their internal thylakoid system, starch granules are formed and dictyosomes continue to produce vesicles that contribute carpospore wall material. The formation of fibrous vacuoles originates from the fibrous vacuole associated organelles (FVAOs). In the final stage, mature carpospores form cored vesicles. They also contain well-developed plastids, fibrous vacuoles, numerous starch granules and are surrounded by a two-layered carpospore wall.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe  相似文献

We studied the lipid dynamics (lipid contents, classes and fatty acids) during oogenesis and early embryogenesis of 7 viviparous and 3 oviparous deepwater chondrichthyans. Mature pre-ovulated ovarian follicles of all species were high in lipid content, indicative of large energetic expenditure and high maternal investment. Larger lipid reserves were found in viviparous dogshark (28–36% wet weight, ww) compared to oviparous chimaeras (19–24% ww) and catshark, F. boardmani (18% ww). Neutral lipids and monounsaturated fatty acids were the main source of lipidic energy during vitellogenesis and gestation. For most species, there was a peak in total lipid content, levels of storage lipids and essential fatty acids at time of ovulation. Interspecific variation of total lipid yolk reserves and lipid class profiles was largely explained by differences in parity mode, reproductive (continuous vs. non-continuous oocytes development) strategy and depth-related physiological adaptations. Fatty acid profiles were less variable among species with the most important fatty acids including: 16:0, 18:1ω9, 20:1ω9, 20:4ω6 and 22:6ω3. These findings provide a greater biochemical understanding of different maternal-embryonic relationships among chondrichthyans, which can be used as a baseline for subsequent comparative studies.  相似文献
