吡啶硫酮铜(Cu PT)和吡啶硫酮锌(Zn PT)在渗出型海洋防污涂料中的应用日益广泛,其生态毒性引起了人们的关注。本文以南海海域常见优势种——华美盘管虫(Hydroides elegans Haswell)为试验动物,采用彗星实验研究了吡啶硫酮金属对华美盘管虫精子细胞DNA的损伤情况。结果显示,低浓度(4μg·L~(-1)Cu PT或8μg·L~(-1)Zn PT)处理组的精子细胞,其"彗星"尾长、尾DNA含量及Olive尾矩都显著高于溶剂对照组(P0.05);较高浓度(8μg·L~(-1)或16μg·L~(-1)Cu PT,16μg·L~(-1)或32μg·L~(-1)Zn PT)处理组的精子细胞,其"彗星"尾长和尾矩多数显著高于溶剂对照组(P0.01)。此外,尾长和Olive尾矩在试验浓度范围内都呈现"效应-浓度"正相关。Cu PT为4μg·L~(-1)、Zn PT为8μg·L~(-1)时,对精子DNA造成轻度损伤;Cu PT为8μg·L~(-1)、16μg·L~(-1),Zn PT为16μg·L~(-1)、32μg·L~(-1)时,则达到了中度损伤的程度。可见吡啶硫酮金属具有较明显的海洋生态遗传毒性;另一方面,华美盘管虫精子细胞DNA对吡啶硫酮金属的胁迫呈现出较高的敏感性和效应-浓度相关性,在作为生态遗传毒性的生物指标方面具有潜在优势,进一步的研究将促进其在海洋重金属污染评价中的应用,特别是用于南海海洋环境的早期预警监测。 相似文献

Territory and group sizes in Eurasian beavers (Castor fiber): echoes of settlement and reproduction?

According to current theories of territoriality, an animal is expected to defend the smallest area that can provide resources for maximisation of reproduction, known as the economically defendable area. In group territorial species however, the strategies behind resource defence are likely to be more complex with corporate territoriality, cooperative breeding, delayed dispersal and intra-group competition all potentially playing a role. Here we examined group territoriality in a social herbivorous rodent, the Eurasian beaver Castor fiber. Beavers in our study do not inhabit economically defendable territories. Instead the sequence of arrival of pairs into unoccupied areas seems to play a more important role in determining the size of the territory, whereas group size is determined by past reproductive success. We argue that the settlement pattern and reproductive history have a lasting impact in the territorial system of beavers due to a combination of the low adult mortality, high dispersal costs, and avoidance of resource depletion.R.D. The genetic relationships between morphologically indistinguishable marine and brackish populations of Syllis gracilis Grube, 1840 (Polychaeta: Syllidae) were studied by means of allozyme electrophoresis. Samples of S. gracilis from marine coastal and brackish-water habitats were examined for variation at 13 presumptive loci. In addition, a sample
of the closely related species S. prolifera (Krohn, 1852) was analysed. Five loci were multiallelic in at least one population of S. gracilis and eight loci in S. prolifera. Low to moderate levels of within-population genetic variability were found, with average expected heterozygosity values
ranging from H = 0.068 (±0.043 SE) to 0.187 (±0.069 SE) in the populations of S. gracilis; higher values were found in S. prolifera (H = 0.325 ± 0.076). The presence of various private alleles indicated a marked genetic divergence among populations of S. gracilis, with Nei's genetic distances ranging from D = 0.000 to 0.833 and a highly significant F
ST value. Furthermore, evidence for strong genetic heterogeneity between two sympatric marine populations was found. UPGMA cluster
analysis and multidimensional scaling pointed out a clear genetic divergence between brackish and marine populations. At least
two genetically divergent entities occurred in marine and brackish habitats. This could be due to local adaptation of individuals
coming from marine populations to brackish habitats, but more presumably to the occurrence of a species complex within S. gracilis.

The time seabirds have to forage is restricted while breeding, as time at sea must be balanced against the need to take turns with the partner protecting the nest site or offspring, and timing constraints change once the breeding season is over. Combined geolocator-immersion devices were deployed on eleven Imperial Shags (four males and seven females) in Argentina (43°04′S; 64°2′W) in November 2006 and recovered in November 2007. During the breeding season, females foraged throughout the morning, males exclusively in the afternoon, and variability between individuals was low. Outside the breeding season, both sexes foraged throughout the day, and variability between individuals was high. Timing differences may be explained by higher constraints on foraging or greater demands of parental duties experienced by the smaller sex, females in this case. Sexual differences in reproductive role, feeding habits or proficiency can also lead to segregation in timing of foraging, particularly while breeding. 相似文献

A curious feature of the honeybee's waggle dance is the imprecision in the direction indication for nearby food sources.
One hypothesis for the function of this imprecision is that it serves to spread recruits over a certain area and thus is an
adaptation to the typical spatial configuration of the bees' food sources, i.e., flowers in sizable patches. We report an
experiment that tests this tuned-error hypothesis. We measured the precision of direction indication in waggle dances advertising
a nest site (typically a tree cavity, hence a target that is almost a point) and compared it with that of dances advertising
a food source (typically a flower patch, hence a target that covers an area). The precision of dances for a nearby nest site
was significantly higher than that of dances for an equidistant feeder. This was demonstrated four times with four colonies.
Our evidence therefore supports the hypothesis that the level of precision in the direction indication for nearby food sources
is tuned to its optimum without being at its maximum.

Gametogenesis, spawning behavior, and early development have been described in the methane-seep polychaete Hesiocaecamethanicola Desbruyères and Toulmond, 1998, the first documentation of the reproductive biology of any cold-seep polychaete species.
The worms were collected at the Green Canyon site in the Gulf of Mexico (27°44.77N; 91°13.33W) in August 1997. The gonads
are situated in the neuropodia in association with an intraepithelial capillary system. Oogenesis is intraovarian, with oocytes
remaining in the ovary until late vitellogenesis when they are released into the coelom for final growth and differentiation.
Vitellogenesis involves both autosynthetic and heterosynthetic processes and, along with ovarian structure, suggests a relatively
slow process of egg formation. Sperm differentiation is intertesticular until early spermiogenesis, when spermatid tetrads
complete development in the coelom. The mature spermatozoon is an ect-aquasperm consisting of a tapering, digitate acrosome,
a spherical nucleus, a midpiece containing from six to eight mitochondria and glycogen stores, and two centrioles associated
with the flagellum. Both sexes undergo broadcast spawning, but the males spawn exclusively through the anus, a behavior previously
unknown in polychaetes. Artificial fertilization resulted in spiral cleavage and development to the trochophore stage. Oocyte
size-frequency analysis of adult females indicates a wide range of oocyte sizes and vitellogenic stages, suggesting that asynchronous
gametogenesis occurs.

The acorn barnacle, Semibalanus balanoides, is thought to release larvae in response to phytoplankton blooms, but there is evidence that another, unidentified cue for
release may exist. We conducted high-frequency sampling in Little Harbor, Massachusetts, USA, to determine whether early-stage
larval abundance was related to several environmental variables, and to characterize vertical distributions of the larvae.
Larval concentrations peaked at 2.52 and 1.02 individuals l−1 during two storms. Larvae were more abundant near the surface than near the bottom. We suggest the hypothesis that turbid
conditions and upward-swimming behavior may protect newly-released larvae from predation and cannibalism. Future studies should
test this hypothesis with barnacles and other invertebrates. 相似文献

Free crawling was an original life style, and the ability to build tubes and bore into shells evolved independently in various annelids and more than once within the family Spionidae. Absence of morphological differences between the shell-boring (SB) and tube-dwelling (TD) spionid worms and the innate ability of borers to build tubes raised a question whether the mode of life is fixed or flexible. Sequence data of three gene fragments of the mitochondrial 16S rDNA and nuclear 18S and 28S rDNA (in total 1,677 bp) have shown that SB and TD individuals of Dipolydora carunculata from the Sea of Japan were genetically identical, whereas those of Polydora triglanda from Taiwan were genetically distant and not conspecific. These data indicate that some species are constrained to a certain mode of life, while others are flexible and individuals can be either SB or TD depending on the place of settlement in the end of their larval development. 相似文献

Growth and reproduction were compared among six geographically and genetically distinct intertidal populations of the annual,
semelparous, dorid nudibranch Adalaria proxima (Alder & Hancock) to evaluate variation in fitness-related traits. The six populations spanned the geographic range in the
northern British Isles: NE England (Cowling Scar), E Scotland (Kinkell Braes), NW Scotland (Loch Eriboll), W Scotland (Cuan
Ferry), Northern Ireland (Portaferry), and N Wales (Menai Bridge). Nudibranchs from five sites were collected in July to August
1992 as post-metamorphic juveniles and were laboratory-reared under the same conditions of ambient temperature and photoperiod
for up to 10 months and the completion of spawning. Individuals from the sixth site were added to the experiment in December
1992. Growth was monitored every 2 weeks, and reproductive performance was expressed as a weight-adjusted dimensionless index
(ΣRI) of each individual's spawnings summed over the reproductive period. In general, larger nudibranchs produced larger first
spawn masses and more total spawn than did smaller nudibranchs, but these size-related trends were observed only in some populations.
The patterns of energy partitioning to spawnings varied significantly among populations, from allocations of a large number
of eggs to few spawn masses (Loch Eriboll) to production of many small spawnings over a long spawning period (Portaferry).
There was no relationship between maximum body size and the amount of spawn produced after the first spawning, nor to the
length of the spawning period or the number of spawn produced. Both Menai Bridge and Kinkell Braes had low mean population
ΣRI, reflecting a very poor reproductive performance, given their large maximum (pre-spawning) body sizes. By contrast, the Loch
Eriboll, Cuan Ferry, and Portaferry populations all displayed high mean population ΣRI, albeit as a result of differing combinations of numbers and sizes of spawn masses and duration of the spawning period. This
high variance of reproductive allocation among populations, and previous evidence of relatively stable among-population differences
in allozyme frequencies, adult color, and embryo characteristics suggest very restricted larval transport of lecithotrophic
larvae of A. proxima.

Parental-investment theory predicts that monogamy should be rare, and empirical evidence supports this prediction. Monogamy
has generally been explained by either (1) a need for biparental care, or (2) a uniform distribution of limiting resources.
By contrast, monogamy has evolved in several coral-reef fishes without biparental care, and many coral-reef fishes may not
be limited by resources. Monogamy in these fishes might be explained by either (3) a low population density that favors mate
fidelity, or (4) an abundance of resources that allows all males to breed and thus lowers the cost-benefit ratio for females
that mate guard. We tested predictions of these hypotheses in the coral-reef fish, Valenciennea strigata, except that (1) biparental care had previously been rejected. We found no evidence of resource limitation (2a): food densities
within territories did not differ from the density of food in unused habitat adjacent to territories; potential nest sites
also existed in this unused habitat. Similarly, (2b) if resources limit the population, territory defense might require the
coordinated efforts of a pair; however, widowed fish maintained their territories and (3) remated rapidly. Finally, (4) all
males maintained a nest, both sexes enforced monogamy by mate guarding, and females benefited from guarding a high-quality
(large) mate. Females mated to large males fed more than when they paired with small males. The results support the hypothesis
that abundant and uniformly distributed resources can lead to monogamy by lowering the cost of guarding a mate when mate guarding
provides benefits.

The cosmopolitan polychaete Capitella capitata, known as a complex of opportunistic sibling species, usually dominates the macrobenthos of polluted or unpredictable environments.
A population of C. capitata, termed Capitella sp. M, was found in a shallow water hydrothermal vent area south of Milos (Greece). Here, this population occurs close to
vent outlets (termed the “transition zone”), an environment with steep gradients of temperature, salinity and pH and increased
sulphide concentrations of up to 710 μM. The field distribution of C. capitata in relation to sulphide concentrations around the vent outlets was investigated and sulphide tolerance experiments were conducted
on laboratory-cultured worms to elucidate possible adaptations of Capitella sp. M to these extreme environmental conditions. In order to investigate whether the population from the Milos hydrothermal
vent area can be considered a distinct sibling species within the C. capitata complex, crossbreeding experiments and analysis of general protein patterns were conducted with Capitella sp. M and three other C. capitata populations of different ecological ranges. Capitella sp. M showed high resistance (median survival time: 107 ± 38 h) to anoxia plus high sulphide concentrations of 740 μM. It seems that the ability to survive high-sulphide conditions in combination with reduced interspecific competition enables
the polychaete to maintain a continuous population in this rigorous habitat. From the extremely high tolerance to anoxia and
sulphide, shown in both the crossbreeding experiments and the analysis of total proteins, it can be concluded that Capitella sp. M from the Milos hydrothermal vent area represents a separate sibling species within the C. capitata complex.

The present study provides the longest and most intensive plankton and larval fish seasonal variability analysis in the Canary
Islands and forms a basis for understanding life cycle scheduling and interactions among species, as well as the potential
variability in transport processes of early life stages. Larval fish assemblages were studied weekly at Gran Canaria Island,
Canary Islands, from January 2005 to June 2007, which represented two contrasting hydrological and biological periods. The
former year was characterized by lower temperature and salinity that increased through 2006 and 2007. In contrast, chlorophyll
concentration and mesozooplankton biomass decreased through the same period, especially when only the late winter bloom period
was evaluated. However, ichthyoplankton abundance did not exhibit any clear pattern, as larger values were observed during
2006. The larval fish community of this oceanic island, located near the NW African upwelling, was composed of both neritic
and oceanic taxa. Two families accounted for almost half of the collected larvae: Clupeidae (21.9%) and Myctophidae (20.5%).
Although total larval concentration did not exhibit any seasonal peak linked to changes in zooplankton, the ichthyoplankton
composition gradually changed during the year due to the high diversity and extended spawning periods of the fish species
represented in samples. “Winter” and “summer” larval assemblages were identified, corresponding to the mixing and stratification
periods of the water column, respectively. These assemblages were characterized by changes in the contribution of the most
abundant annual taxa (Sardinella aurita,
Cyclothone braueri, Ceratoscopelus spp. and Gobids) and by the presence of larvae of winter (Pagellus bogaraveo, Pomacentridae sp1) or summer spawners (Pomacentridae sp2, Trachinus draco, Arnoglossus thori, Tetraodontidae sp1). Upwelling filaments shed from the NW African coast reached the sampling area three times during this

Many benefits and risks of cooperative colony founding (pleometrosis) have been identified, but rarely have the proximate
factors that lead to association been considered. This study examined the choices queens make during the first few hours after
mating, and some of the correlates of those choices. Queens had a strong affinity for preformed holes in the soil and readily
used these as their initial founding chambers. This affinity was so strong that in a field experiment, the dispersion pattern
of preformed holes controlled the final dispersion of colony-founding queens. Attraction to partially formed holes is thus
an important cause of pleometrosis. The excavation of complete founding chambers incurred no measurable cost on the subsequent
reproductive output of queens, suggesting that the primary benefit of using preformed holes is to remove the queen quickly
from exposure to predation and desiccation. In the field, pairs of queens offered five equivalent preformed holes in soil
were more likely to share the same hole if the holes were shallow and close together. In these experiments, queens modified
preformed soil holes so that the test holes were no longer equivalent, causing the choice of queen and hole to become confounded.
Laboratory experiments in plaster arenas with unmodifiable holes confirmed the field experiments: queens were more likely
to share a hole when the holes were shallow than when they were deep. Because queens entering adequately deep holes seldom
reemerged, this suggested that the likelihood of sharing increased with increasing contact between queens, that is, when queens
were readily and frequently detected. Such contacts will also predict the future competitive environments to be experienced
by incipient colonies, and may temper the tendency of queens to associate. However, experiments in which queens were exposed
to high and low densities before pairing in the choice arenas failed to show an effect on the choice to join the resident
queen. Queens that joined a resident queen differed in their robustness from queens that did not join. Queens choosing their
own partners did no better reproductively than those assigned partners at random. Overall, this study suggests that (1) newly
mated queens are under strong selection to leave the soil surface and do so by using any available holes, whether dug by another
queen or of some other origin; (2) they are attracted to other queens, and are more likely to cofound as contact with the
potential cofoundress becomes more frequent and (3) they choose whether or not to cofound partly on the basis of their own
reproductive characteristics.

The present work proposes a siting process for the detection of a suitable site for wave energy exploitation. The choice of a suitable site is based on the good agreement between energy availability, environmental sustainability, and equipped facilities to exploit wave energy. The case study in the northern Latium coast is explicative because in this area there are several activities that affect marine ecosystems, and the introduction of renewable energies promote the reduction of anthropic pressures. The nearshore wave power is studied through the numerical wave model (CMS-Wave), and available wave buoys along the coast were used to compare numerical results. In correspondence with Civitavecchia harbour, the largest nearshore wave energy was found; the large depth in front of the breakwater allows to conserve a great part of offshore wave power, with an average dissipation rate of 10 % less than offshore, with mean annual available wave energy of 25.4 MWh/m and seasonal fluctuation of 5.4 MWh/m. This area appears to be an optimal site for nearshore and shoreline wave energy device tests and installations, for energy availability (intermediate level respect Mediterreanean Sea), low potential environmental impact, easier accessibility, and policy oriented towards a larger sustainability of harbour activities. 相似文献

Stomach temperature loggers have proved useful for the study of feeding activity in free-living seabirds, but their usage
has been restricted because they are frequently dislodged and lost during the seabirds' regular regurgitation of indigestible
prey remains. In the present study we examine the incidence of spontaneous regurgitation (pellet production) in free-living
seabirds, consider the effect this has on the likely retrieval of stomach temperature loggers and present a structural modification
of the logger housings which leads to a much lower incidence of regurgitation. Systems were tested on albatrosses, cormorants,
gannets and penguins.

The effects of the form of the grazing and mortality terms used in plankton models are well known. The same cannot be said for ecosystem models. As ecosystem models become more popular more needs to be known about the effects of model formulation on model behaviour and performance. The impact of the form of the grazing response function and mortality terms used in a biogeochemical ecosystem model are considered here. We show that in the large and inter-linked webs used in ecosystem models, model behaviour is far more sensitive to the form of the grazing term than to that of the mortality terms that close the modelled food web.When using biogeochemical ecosystem models in shallow marine ecosystems, the most dynamic and sophisticated functional responses describing grazing require more parameters and validation than the simpler Holling disk equation, but usually still lead to the same general conclusions about the system state and the effects of changes in forcing functions. Thus, the use of more complex functional responses is not necessarily warranted in many cases. Similarly, the extra effort and data required to explicitly represent the top predators (sharks, mammals and birds) is not necessary if they are not the focus of the study. A quadratic mortality term applied to intermediate predators (such as piscivores) is sufficient to achieve plausible model behaviour. It should be noted, however, that some degree of sophistication is required in the grazing and mortality terms. Use of simple linear functional responses and mortality terms is unsuitable for models used to consider a range of nutrient loading or harvesting scenarios. 相似文献

The nocturnal orb-web spider Larinioides sclopetarius lives near water and frequently builds webs on bridges. In Vienna, Austria, this species is particularly abundant along the
artificially lit handrails of a footbridge. Fewer individuals placed their webs on structurally identical but unlit handrails
of the same footbridge. A census of the potential prey available to the spiders and the actual prey captured in the webs revealed
that insect activity was significantly greater and consequently webs captured significantly more prey in the lit habitat compared
to the unlit habitat. A laboratory experiment showed that adult female spiders actively choose artificially lit sites for
web construction. Furthermore, this behaviour appears to be genetically predetermined rather than learned, as laboratory-reared
individuals which had previously never foraged in artificial light exhibited the same preference. This orb-web spider seems
to have evolved a foraging behaviour that exploits the attraction of insects to artificial lights.

The incidence of cannibalism of larval Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on maize under field conditions was investigated using field cages. Cannibalism was found to account
for approximately 40% mortality when maize plants were infested with two or four fourth-instar larvae over a 3-day period.
Field trials examined the effect of larval density on the prevalence of natural enemies of S. frugiperda. The abundance of predators (earwigs, staphylinids, other predatory beetles, and Chrysoperla spp.) was significantly greater on maize plants with higher levels of larval feeding damage, while the relationship between
predator abundance and number of S. frugiperda larvae per plant was less clear. As larval damage is probably a more reliable indicator of previous larval density than numbers
collected at an evaluation, this indicates that predation risk will be greater for larvae living in large groups. Parasitism
accounted for 7.1% mortality of larvae in sorghum, and involved six species of Hymenoptera and Tachinidae. There was no effect
of larval density or within-plant distribution on the probability of larval attack by parasitoids. The selective benefits
of cannibalism, in relation to the risk of predation and parasitism, are discussed.
