The behaviour of household members has a significant impact on the resulting energy consumption of a household. Studies show that within the same buildings with the same installations, energy consumption can be reduced by an average of 37% by a more economical behaviour. There exists therefore, a large potential to reduce the demand by influencing behaviour. The question remains how this potential can be addressed. VITO conducted, in collaboration with the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve, the SEREC-project. This project investigated the socio-economic factors influencing residential energy consumption; furthermore, in the larger framework different tools have been developed. Several were tested and evaluated in a number of dwellings in this research. They address both energy consumption for heating as well as electricity consumption. The tools are completely different, but all were designed to help make householders aware of their energy-related behaviour and to provide recommendations on energy saving measures. For each case, potential changes in habits were followed-up. The observed range is quite large, as full scale audits of every dwelling were performed as general comparisons of annual consumption were made.To gain more insight into the effectiveness of the tools, several families participated in in-depth sociological interviews. The overall results show the strengths and weaknesses of the different tools. More generally, the results reveal some of the key properties of recommendations that are necessary to ensure effectiveness for behavioural change. 相似文献

We studied 101 couples to determine how far their reproductive behaviour was affected by the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis (CF) on its first occurrence in the couple's progeny and by the availability of prenatal diagnosis (PD). The couples were all resident in the Veneto and Trentino regions and attending the Verona CF Centre. CF had been diagnosed in the first affected child, during the period 1 January 1980-1 July 1990, before the age of 1 year. Couples received a questionnaire regarding socio-demographic status, reproduction data, and awareness of PD. Reproductive history was divided into three phases: prior to diagnosis of CF in the first affected child; from this time until PD was made available; and after the couples had learned of PD. In phase 2 (awareness of the genetic risk but not of PD), 54 couples showed a marked decrease in reproduction, none of the few pregnancies that occurred being taken to term. When couples became aware of PD, some resumption of reproductive activity occurred and 11 per cent of the 101 couples had another child; PD was used in 65 per cent of pregnancies and the abortion rate decreased to 35 per cent. All couples who opted for PD had no children without CF. 相似文献

Winged and wingless males coexist in the ant Cardiocondyla obscurior. Wingless (“ergatoid”) males never leave their maternal colony and fight remorselessly among each other for the access to
emerging females. The peaceful winged males disperse after about 10 days, but beforehand also mate in the nest. In the first
5 days of their life, winged males perform a chemical female mimicry that protects them against attack and even makes them
sexually attractive to ergatoid males. When older, the chemical profile of winged males no longer matches that of virgin females;
nevertheless, they are still tolerated, which so far has been puzzling. Contrasting this general pattern, we have identified
a single aberrant colony in which all winged males were attacked and killed by the ergatoid males. A comparative analysis
of the morphology and chemical profile of these untypical attacked winged males and the tolerated males from several normal
colonies revealed that normal old males are still performing some chemical mimicry to the virgin queens, though less perfect
than in their young ages. The anomalous attacked winged males, on the other hand, had a very different odour to the females.
Our study thus exemplifies that the analysis of rare malfunctioning can add valuable insight on functioning under normal conditions
and allows the conclusion that older winged males from normal colonies of the ant C. obscurior are guarded through an imperfect chemical female mimicry, still close enough to protect against attacks by the wingless fighters
yet dissimilar enough not to elicit their sexual interest. 相似文献

Observations on individually marked fallow deer (Dama dama) in central Italy were performed over 2 years in order to analyse time budgets of four age and sex classes. The aim was to test whether feeding activity was influenced by mating activity, forage quality or physiological constraints during the rut. Only adult males (bucks) completely ceased feeding during the rutting season, well before the actual start of mating behaviour and concurrently with the phenomenon of scent-urination, and spending most of their daily time completely inactive. All other age and sex classes were unaffected in their feeding behaviour by the rutting season. Indeed, females and young males showed a marked increase in grazing in response to an improvement in forage quality from summer to autumn. These results seem to confirm the hypothesis that hypophagia, displayed only by bucks, may be of no adaptive value in itself. On the other hand, it may be a by-product of other physiological processes occurring during the rut, inducing scent-urination, which plays an important role in intraspecific recognition and sexual attraction. 相似文献

Reproductive carrier screening started in some countries in the 1970s for hemoglobinopathies and Tay-Sachs disease. Cystic fibrosis carrier screening became possible in the late 1980s and with technical advances, screening of an ever increasing number of genes has become possible. The goal of carrier screening is to inform people about their risk of having children with autosomal recessive and X-linked recessive disorders, to allow for informed decision making about reproductive options. The consequence may be a decrease in the birth prevalence of these conditions, which has occurred in several countries for some conditions. Different programs target different groups (high school, premarital, couples before conception, couples attending fertility clinics, and pregnant women) as does the governance structure (public health initiative and user pays). Ancestry-based offers of screening are being replaced by expanded carrier screening panels with multiple genes that is independent of ancestry. This review describes screening in Australia, Cyprus, Israel, Italy, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It provides an insight into the enormous variability in how reproductive carrier screening is offered across the globe. This largely relates to geographical variation in carrier frequencies of genetic conditions and local health care, financial, cultural, and religious factors. 相似文献

Animal lifespans range from a few days to many decades, and this life history diversity is especially pronounced in ants. Queens can live for decades. Males, in contrast, are often assumed to act as ephemeral sperm delivery vessels that die after a brief mating flight—a view developed from studies of lekking species in temperate habitats. In a tropical ant assemblage, we found that males can live days to months outside the nest, a trait hypothesized to be associated with female calling, another common mating system. We combined feeding experiments with respirometry to show that lifespan can be enhanced over 3 months by feeding outside the nest. In one focal female calling species, Ectatomma ruidum, feeding enhanced male lifespan, but not sperm content. Extended lifespans outside the nest suggest stronger than expected selection on premating traits of male ants, although the ways these traits shape male mating success remain poorly understood. 相似文献

Menkes X-linked disease, a copper disturbance syndrome, is detectable in cell cultures. Prenatal findings in two at-risk foetuses suggested that prenatal diagnosis was also feasible. In this study, we report substantial evidence that therapeutic abortion can be limited to hemizygous males. Forty-two at-risk pregnancies from 21 European families and 1 Canadian family were monitored with 64Cu-uptake into cultured amniotic fluid cells. In 10 pregnancies with a male karyotype an affected foetus was predicted on the basis of the copper studies. The pregnancies were terminated and the diagnosis was in each case confirmed by a markedly increased placenta copper content. Fourteen male foetuses were predicted to be unaffected and none of them has developed signs of Menkes disease after birth. In 6 of these cases the diagnosis was checked in the newborn boy by placenta copper measurements, and they all had copper concentrations within normal limits. Eighteen pregnancies with a female karyotype were also studied. 9 females could be identified as carriers on the basis of the tissue culture studies or raised placenta copper values. 相似文献

Under complementary sex determination (CSD), females of Hymenoptera arise from diploid, fertilized eggs and males from haploid,
unfertilized eggs. Incidentally, fertilized eggs that inherit two identical alleles at the CSD locus will develop into diploid
males. Diploid males are usually unviable or sterile. In a few species, however, they produce diploid sperm and father a triploid
female progeny. Diploid males have been reported in a number of social Hymenoptera, but the occurrence of triploid females
has hardly ever been documented. Here, we report the presence of triploid females, diploid males, and diploid sperm (produced
by diploid males and stored in queen spermathecae) in the ant Tapinoma erraticum. Moreover, we show variations in the frequency of triploids among female castes: Triploid females are more frequent among
workers than virgin queens; they are absent among mated, reproductive queens. The frequency of triploid workers also varies
between populations and between nests within populations. 相似文献
