Summary Results from experiments on the role of learning in the mating biology of a sweat bee, Lasioglossum zephyrum (Hymenoptera: Halictidae), are described in this paper. Male learning of individual female odors is important in natural populations (Table 1), as has been shown in the laboratory. Four other hypotheses are unlikely to account for the observed behavior: (1) Female odors dissipate rapidly; (2) Males learn and then avoid the study area; (3) Males or females produce repellents which are effective against other males; or (4) males recognize their own odor on previously-contacted females, which they subsequently avoid. Regarding questions of male preference and optimal outbreeding, Tables 2 and 3 show there are no consistent preferences for more novel or less novel female odors.  相似文献

Schizoporella unicornis floridana Osburn from Maryland and New Jersey, USA, produces two types of autozoids: (1) primogenial zoids, arranged in the brick-like quincunx pattern usual among cheilostomes; (2) adventitious, or frontally-budded zoids. Adventitious zoids are produced by expansion of the epitheca of primogenial or other adventitious zoids. The old aperture is sealed over and the hypostega becomes the body cavity of a new zoid. Vertical walls of adventitious zoids all contain an intercalary cuticle; basal walls are the frontal walls of zoids beneath. This sometimes results in trepostome-like zoid columns arising from the substrate; zoid columns may bifurcate in a way similar to zoid row-bifurcation in primogenial zoids. Adventitious zoids communicate with zoids at the same depth in the colony through annular septulae; they communicate with younger and older zoids through areolae. Adventitious zoids may sometimes give rise to primogenial subcolonies, which overgrow the colony surface. Frontal budding allows the development of massive nodules, which are of geological importance. These findings indicate that the hypostegal coelom is at least potentially a bud, and that genetic information necessary for producing an autozoid may be transferred from one building site to another. Mytilus edulis L. were exposed to abrupt (3015 and 1530) and fluctuating (sinusoidal 12 h cycles of 301530) changes in salinity, and the changes in the total osmoconcentration of the haemolymph were recorded. The response of nitrogen metabolism to the altered extracellular osmotic concentrations was investigated in terms of the concentrations of the total NPS (ninhydrin-positive substances) pool and the individual amino acids of the tissues, the concentration of the amino acids of the haemolymph, and the rates of excretion of ammonia and amino acids by whole individuals. The haemolymph became isosmotic with the seawater with abrupt changes in salinity, but with fluctuating salinity was slightly hyperosmotic as the salinity decreased and then slightly hypo-osmotic as the salinity increased. This resulted in a reduction in the extent of the extracellular osmotic change compared to the change in fluctuating salinity to which it was exposed. Total NPS of the tissues decreased with an abrupt decrease in salinity and increased with an abrupt increase in salinity, but a seasonal dependence of the response was indicated. The short-term response of tissue NPS to fluctuating salinity was equivocal, but with long-term exposure the concentration declined. Ammonia and amino acid excretion increased with both an abrupt decrease in salinity and fluctuating salinity and decreased with an abrupt increase in salinity. Haemolymph amino acids increased with an abrupt decrease in salinity. The increased rates of nitrogen excretion accounted for the reductions in the NPS concentrations of the tissues except in the early stages of fluctuating salinity. Taurine, aspartate, threonine, serine, glycine and arginine declined with an abrupt decrease in salinity while alanine and glutamate increased slightly. With an abrupt increase in salinity, alanine and ammonia accumulated in the tissues and then declined while the other amino acids increased slowly over a longer time-course. Similar individual amino acid responses were seen with long-term exposure to fluctuating salinity, except for taurine which did not decrease in concentration. On the basis of the changes in tissue amino acids and ammonia, it is suggested that the alanine dehydrogenase reaction is the primary nitrogen-fixing reaction in marine bivalves such as M. edulis.  相似文献

A highly specific recognition system, capable of distinguishing between allogeneic (non-clonemates) and syngeneic (clonemates) conspecifics, exists in Anemonia sulcata (Coelenterata: Anthozoa). During a competitive interaction between allogeneic individuals, specialized structures (acrorhagi) are exposed and used to sting opponents. This complex behavior is called the acrorhagial response. In order to quantify this behavior we measured the acrorhagial response time (period from first contact with opponent to full expansion of acrorhagi). More than 320 reciprocal histoincompatibility responses were recorded. These histoincompatibility (H) markers are free components of the sea anemone mucus: they were characterized as glyco-proteins of a molecular weight <18 KD (Kilo-Dalton) containing terminal -d-glucose and/or -d-mannose. In alloimmune memory testing experiments, the memory trace in A. sulcata was found to persist for 5 d.  相似文献

The 3 culturing devices described are based on the principle of the classic air-water lift, which facilitates continuous recirculation and aeration of the cultivation medium. The first device is a circulation cylinder, convenient for hatching eggs of the brine shrimp Artemia salina and for culturing algae and protozoans. In the second device, an internal basket (i.e., a glass cylinder with plankton-gauze bottom) prevents the animals being carried along in the air-water lift. The third device, analogous to the second, is provided with a lateral waste-drain and a water collector with siphon, which empties regularly into the main culture vessel. The second and third devices proved to be excellent for the cultivation of a variety of aquatic metazoans. The effect of ionizing radiation on the iron-linked protein (haemoglobin) of the marine lamellibranchs Anadara granosa (Linn.) and Cardita antiquata (Lam.) from Bombay waters, India is discussed. Purified haemoglobin solutions were exposed to a 60Cobalt source delivering a dose of about 4,600 rad/min, at the sample irradiation point. Radiation damage or degradation was measured spectrophometrically by studying changes in the absorption spectra following irradiation in the presence and absence of oxygen. Exposure to ionizing radiation in general caused a decrease in absorption of both haemoglobins, irrespective of location, viz extra-versus intracellular, at Soret (412 m), (540 to 42 m) and (574 to 76 m) peaks, and an increase in absorption at 510 and 630 m. Upon exposure to a higher dose, O2Hb of C. antiquata showed an increase in absorption at the protein peak (280 m); exposure to a lower dose, however, resulted in decreased absorption. Furthermore, the changes following irradiation were dependent upon the initial state of the pigment. Oxyhaemoglobin, when exposed to radiation, oxidized to hemiglobin, and hemiglobin reduced to oxyhaemoglobin. The extracellular haemoglobin of high molecular weight (3x106) of the false cockle C. antiquata was found to be extremely radio-resistant, whereas intracellular haemoglobin of low molecular weight (74,000) of the arcid clam A. granosa was highly radiosensitive, since it could not be exposed to doses exceeding 18,000 r.  相似文献

Routine oxygen consumption of very young juveniles (0.1 g) of Penaeus indicus H. Milne Edwards was significantly influenced by ambient temperature and weight of the animal, but not by ambient salinity, when tested at salinities (7, 21, and 35) to which they had been long-term (over 10 days) acclimated. Standard oxygen consumption of young juvenile prawns (1 to 3 g), subjected to step-wise changes in ambient salinity, from sea water to low salinity waters (2 to 6), and measured after short-term (24 h) salinity acclimation at each step, was lowest at salinities where prawns such as those tested occur naturally (10 to 15). The metabolic rates do not appear to have a direct relation to the osmotic gradient, even when the influence of interfering activity is eliminated. It appears that factors other than osmotic gradient will have to be sought in order to explain the metabolic patterns of P. indicus in relation to salinity.  相似文献

The present paper deals with ecological aspects of the pulmonate gastropod Siphonaria lessoni (Blainville, 1824), a common member of fouling communities in Mar del Plata's port (38°0817 S, 57°3118 W). Populations on colonized panels of an experimental raft were studied during three annual cycles, to determine feeding habits, growth and various factors which restrict their distribution on floating substrata. Although S. lessoni is harmless as a fouling organism, its grazing on the algal belt clears a part of the substratum's surface, which is then quickly colonized by truly aggressive organisms such as Balanus amphitrite.  相似文献

Photomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to determine the fine structure of the latero-frontal cirri on the gills of three species of bivalve mollusc: Mytilus edulis Linn., Barnea candida (Linn.), and Petricola pholadiformis Lam. The component cilia are seen to branch off alternately along the length of each cirrus. Each of these free, lateral lengths of the cilia are separated from the next on their side by a mean distance of 0.6 m. They extend to a mean length of 2.7 m in M. edulis, the species described in detail. It is shown that a complete straining mesh can be formed over the gill ostium during normal filtering and the aperture of this mesh correlates well with the previously recorded filtering efficiency for Mytilus.  相似文献

This account represents the results of investigations on the production of some zooplankton populations. For comparing different populations the index specific production (the production rate of the unit of the biomass) is used. The correlation between specific production and age-structure for some populations is described. A prominent lateral-line system found in 10 mm long larvae of the deep-sea fish Cataetyx memorabilis Meyer-Rochow (1970) is not present in the adults. Size and height of larval lateral-line papillae measured in stereo pairs of electron micrographs are compared with light microscopy of sectioned material. Lateral-line papillae are separated from each other by 3 to 7 myomeres (0.5 to 1 mm). A papilla is 50 m wide and approximately 15 m high. The 7 or 8 sensory hairs, which are about 30 to 40 m long, are not embedded in a jellylike transparent substance. Behavioural and taxonomical consequences of the findings are discussed.  相似文献

An adult Psammechinus miliaris, and another specimen 8 mm in diameter were both fed apically by deposition of a protein-powder extracted from a heavily 14C-tagged urchin. The organs of the former were counted and the latter was totally sectioned and autoradiographed. The gut was more labelled than expected after an apical meal. This could be explained by a pumping of some nutritive powder into the gut, the bright marking of the superficial tissues being obviously due to direct uptake. The localized proteolysis produced by a podial disc of P. miliaris on a black gelatin-film may be due to the secretion of special cell-masses just underlying the calcareous plates of the disc. Extracts from mucus, small spines and dorsal podia from the anterior furrow of Echinocardium cordatum produce a conspicuous digestion of Remazol-brilliant blue hidepowder in vitro. Several in vivo tests with artificial substrates suggest the existence of a trypsin-like enzyme and not chymiotrypsin in the mucus. Fresh frozen sections in podia of Asterias rubens treated with A.S. naphthol-propionate showed that special cells, scattered in the connective tissue, gave a dark-red stain. Strains of red granules issued by them found their way to the surface of the disc between the columnar epithelial cells. These chimiotrypsin-positive cells and their products seem identical to those seen by Chaet and Philpot (1964) in A. forbesi. These authors did not suspect their digestive function. The nutrition of Henricia sanguinolenta through the body wall was tested either with radioactive diatoms or 14C-labelled amino acids in sea water selectively offered to one or two arms. Both countings and autoradiographs demonstrated the importance of skin-digestion and absorption, especially in the ambulacra. The absorbed nutrients reach the muscle layer, not only the epiderm as mentioned in Ferguson's (1967) esperiments.  相似文献

Sodium and chloride concentrations of the haemolymph were determined in Sphaeroma rugicauda Leach and S. serratum Fabricius acclimatized to a range of salinities. Sodium loss and uptake (using 22Na) were measured in salinities below 1.1 for S. rugicauda and 7.2 for S. serratum. Potential differences between haemolymph and medium indicate active uptake of both ions in certain salinities. The active-uptake component of total sodium-influx was found to be related non-linearly to the sodium concentration of the medium. Curves of were fitted to the activeuptake data. Km values indicate that, in S. rugicauda, the sodium uptake system has a greater affinity for sodium than in S. serratum. These findings are discussed in relation to the distribution of each species.  相似文献

In Ensis directus (Conrad) metabolic changes accompanying muscular activity and experimental anoxia were investigated. Octopine dehydrogenase, strombine dehydrogenase, alanopine dehydrogenase and lactic dehydrogenase were shown to be present in different parts of the body, but the activity of ODH always exceeded that of the other enzymes by far. Muscular activity connected with escape digging or evoked by electrical stimulation resulted in a decrease of stored phosphagen and in an accumulation of octopine. During recovery the normal concentrations of energy-rich phosphates were restored quickly, whereas octopine was removed more slowly. In experimental anoxia only minor quantities of L-and D-alanine, succinate, propionate, and acetate were formed. Quantitatively the most important endproduct was strombine, which rose linearly with the duration of anoxic incubation.  相似文献

Brown and cherry colour morphs of the heteronemertean Lineus torquatus Coe, 1901 from the Vostok Bay of the Sea of Japan were compared using allele frequencies at 18 isozyme loci. These morphs shared no common alleles at 9 of the 18 loci. The observed genetic differences are strong evidence that the brown and cherry colour morphs, which occur sympatrically, are different species. Nei's genetic distance between these species (D=1.135) is considerably higher than typical D values for congeneric animal species. As with much previous work on nemerteans, intraspecific allozymic variability in both species was high, with mean expected heterozygosity values 0.286±0.049 and 0.159±0.051 for L. torquatus (brown) and L. torquatus (cherry) species, respectively.  相似文献

Hitherto published evidence of the presence or absence of endogenous activity rhythms in bivalve molluscs is equivocal. Mytilus edulis L. were collected from a North Wales (UK) estuary in 1985, and shell-gaping was investigated in individual mussels under constant conditions in the laboratory. Results suggest that there is no endogenous circatidal rhythm of shell-gaping in this species, This is consistent with the view that, unlike mobile species, sessile intertidal species are much more likely to exhibit exogenous rather than endogenous responses to tidal fluctuations. There is some evidence of weak circadian rhythmicity of shell-gaping in M. edulis, with greater duration of shell-closure during hours of expected daylight. Such behaviour could represent an adaptational defence against visually-feeding predators.  相似文献

Phagostimulatory properties of amino acids, carbohydrates, vitamins, fatty acids, and cholesterol were assessed for sea hares (Aplysia kurodai and A. dactylomela). A. kurodai were collected at Shirahama, Japan, during March-May 1979, and A. dactylomela were collected at Barbados, West Indies, during August-November 1978. Greatest phagostimulatory responses were elicited by starch, glutamic and aspartic acids, maltose, oleic acid, and certain combinations of vitamins. Combinations of nutrients resulted in negative synergistic or masking effects of the phagostimulatory properties of the component nutrients. The widespread sensitivity and responsiveness to glutamic and aspartic acids by marine invertebrates, and especially by sea hares, are discussed from the standpoint of possible use by marine herbivores as feeding cues.  相似文献
