The activities of 18 enzymes were measured in gill, hepatopancreas and muscle tissue of the deep-water crabsChaceon fenneri andC. quinquedens and the shallow-water crabCallinectes sapidus collected from the Gulf of Mexico in January 1989. The activities of catabolic enzymes were correlated in general with the known metabolic rates of the three species. Activities were much higher inC. sapidus than inChaceon fenneri andC. quinquedens. In some cases,C. quinquedens had higher activities thanC. fenneri. The activities of enzymes of amino acid metabolism (glutamate dehydrogenase and alanine aminotransferase) were higher inC. quinquedens, which had high hemolymph [ammonia] and ammonia excretion rates. The activity of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) ofC. fenneri andC. quinquedens were correlated with the two species' abilities to withstand hypoxia. The more hypoxiatolerant species,C. quinquedens, had higher activity of LDH in its muscles than didC. fenneri.  相似文献

Protein, lipid, phosphorus, and organic carbon contents, as well as electron transport system (ETS) activity, lactatedehydrogenase activity, and gut evacuation rate, were measured in four interzonal species of Pacific copepods:Calanus australis, C. pacificus, Eucalanus inermis, andE. elongatus f.hyalinus, collected at the upwelling areas off Peru (8°S) and California (27°N), and in the middle of the North Pacific (30°N), from February to April 1987. The two Eucalanidae species —E. inermis andE. elongatus — have distinctive biochemical and elemental body composition and rates of main physiological processes. Relative protein, lipid, phosphorus, and organic carbon contents (µg mg–1 wet weight) in these species were, respectively, ca. 1/7 to 1/10, 1/5 to 1/20, 1/5 to 1/10, and 1/5 those inCalanus spp. Likewise, oxygen uptake rate per unit of wet weight (based on ETS activity) inE. inermis andE. elongatus was 5 to 10% of that in calanids; a similar difference was found in phosphorus excretion rate. In addition, gut evacuation rates inE. inermis andE. elongatus were ca. one-fifth of those inCalanus spp. Based on these data, we considered the eucalanids as belonging to a distinctive physiological group, figuratively named jelly-body copepods. In contrast with calanids, active lactatedehydrogenase has been found in the bodies ofE. inermis andE. elongatus, apparently allowing them to survive for a long time in layers of extremely low oxygen content (<0.2 ml l–1). The adaptive value of physiological features in these eucalanids and typical calanids is compared.  相似文献

In general, variance in tissue hydrolase (amylase, cellulase and protease) activity between individuals of a particular species is as great or greater than variance between tissue types or between species, e.g. although the specific activity of amylase in the gut tissue ofDendraster excentricus is significantly lower than that of aboral surface tissue, it is not significantly different than that of the oral surface tissue, or of the aboral surface of eitherPisaster ochraceus orStrongylocentrotus droebachiensis. Cellulase activity of the gut tissue ofS. droebachiensis was significantly higher than that of the gut tissue ofP. ochraceus andD. excentricus, reflecting the omnivorous feeding habit of the sea urchin. Cellulase activity of the gut tissue ofD. excentricus was not significantly higher than inP. ochraceus, an unexpected result, given the highly carnivorous behavior of the latter. Protease activity of the gut tissue ofD. excentricus is significantly higher than that of the oral or aboral surface tissues, but not significantly higher than that of the gut tissues ofP. ochraceus orS. droebachiensis. Amylase and cellulase activities in the guts of detritus- and shrimp-fedD. excentricus showed significant increases over that of field individuals; protease activity displayed no significant increase. Some significant surface (oral and aboral) changes were noted with respect to hydrolase activity, but the direction and lack of consistency of the changes argues that these are incidental to the process of digestion. The lack of significant differences in the surface enzyme activity ofD. excentricus, P. ochraceus andS. droebachiensis suggests that macronutrient digestive events in surface tissues are not uniquely important inD. excentricus.  相似文献

Low temperature limits the rate of biochemical reactions and aerobic scopes of cold water ectotherms. To compensate for this limiting effect, animals living in cold environments often possess physiological or morphological adaptations to maintain vital functions. Cross-latitudinal comparison of aerobic capacities is one method to test which factors constrain activity in thermally distinct environments particularly when congeneric studies are carried out on related species with conservative ecology and habitat. Burrowing is a major aerobic activity of bivalve molluscs that is described here for the first time for the tropical mangrove species Laternula truncata and Laternula boschasina and then compared with their Antarctic congener Laternula elliptica. About 80% of L. truncata (16.3–46.1 mm shell length) and 63% of L. boschasina (11.3–27.7 mm shell length) buried within 24 h at 28°C. The burrowing rate index (BRI = [3√wet weight/time to bury]×104) ranged between 1.1 and 20.2 for L. boschasina and 1.1–32.9 for L. truncata. These values are 2–3 orders of magnitude less than other tropical bivalve molluscs and are amongst the lowest recorded for any bivalve. Comparisons with the Antarctic L. elliptica showed little or no differences in BRI (Q 10 of 1.0–1.2 for specimens of the same size). This is contrary to the general pattern over a wide range of bivalves, where BRI increases with a Q 10 of between 2.9 and 6.4 between high latitudes and the equator. L. elliptica has 25–30% longer relative foot length than tropical congeners of the same size, which could be a morphological adaptation compensating for reduced burrowing speeds in a colder environment. Burrowing rates within the genus Laternula could, however, also be maintained by differing habitat, ecological and physiological constraints on burrowing capability.  相似文献

Although predation by fishes is thought to structure benthic invertebrate communities on coral reefs, evidence to support this claim has been difficult to obtain. We deployed an array of eight sponge species on Conch Reef (16 m depth) off Key Largo, Florida, USA, and used a remote video-camera to record fish activity near the array continuously during five daylight periods (6 h for 1 d, at least 11.5 h for 4 d) and one night period (11 h). Of the eight sponge species, four were from adjacent reefs (Agelas wiedenmayeri, Geodia neptuni, Aplysina fistularis, and Pseudaxinella lunaecharta), and four were from a nearby mangrove habitat (Chondrosia collectrix, Geodia gibberosa, Halichondria sp., andTedania ignis). Each species of reef sponge was chosen to match the corresponding mangrove species in form and color (black, brown, yellow, and red, respectively). Predation events only occurred during daylight hours. Tallies of the number of times fishes bit sponges revealed intense feeding by the expected species of sponge-eating fishes, such as the angelfishHolacanthus bermudensis, H. tricolor, andPomacanthus arcuatus, the cowfishLactophrys quadricornis, and the filefishCantherhines pullus, but surprisingly also by the parrotfishSparisoma aurofrenatum andS. chrysopterum. Of 35 301 bites recorded, 50.8% were taken by angelfish, 34.8% by parrotfish, and 13.7% by trunkfish and filefish. Mangrove sponges were preferred by all reef fishes; 96% of bites were taken from mangrove species, with angelfish preferringChondrosia collectrix and parrotfish preferringGeodia gibberosa. Fishes often bit the same sponge repetitively, and frequently consumed entire samples within 30 min of their deployment. Sponge color did not influence fish feeding. Two of the four mangrove sponge-species deployed on the array were also found living in cryptic habitats on adjacent reefs and were rapidly consumed by fishes when exposed. Our results demonstrate the importance of fish predation in controlling the distribution of sponges on Caribbean reefs.  相似文献

Positive plant–animal interactions are important in community ecology, but relatively little attention has been paid to their effect on the production of mangroves, dominant halophytic trees in tropical coastal marshes. Here, the role of fiddler crab (Uca spp.) burrowing on the growth and production of the white mangrove, Laguncularia racemosa (<2 years old), was examined in a restored marsh in Tampa Bay, Florida (27°41.65 N, 82°30.34 W) with manipulative experiments from June 2006 to May 2007. Fiddler crab burrowing significantly increased mangrove height by 27%, trunk diameter by 25%, and leaf production by 15%, compared to mangroves in crab exclusion enclosures. Additionally, the exclusion of fiddler crabs significantly increased interstitial water salinity from 32.4 to 44.2, and decreased the oxidation–reduction potential of the low organic sediments, but did not affect soil pH or sulfide concentration. Mangrove height, trunk diameter, and leaf production along a transect that varied in crab burrow density were positively associated with the number of crab burrows. Further, the density of sympatric Spartina alterniflora shoots was positively correlated with crab burrow density along the transect. As in temperate marshes, fiddler crabs can have significant ecological effects on mangrove communities, serving as ecological engineers by modulating the amount of resources available to marsh plants, and by altering the physical, chemical, and biological state of these soft sediment communities. In restored coastal systems that typically have very poor sediment quality, techniques such as soil amendment could be used to facilitate a more natural interaction between crabs and mangroves in ecosystem development.  相似文献

The effects of nitrate limitation and nitrate starvation on the photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/F m) were examined in batch cultures of two species of symbiotic dinoflagellates, Symbiodinium kawagutii and S. pilosum. F v/F m values were determined along growth curves and show that the F v/F m values are negatively correlated with external nitrogen concentrations in cultures of both species. Changes in growth irradiances in the batch cultures due to increments of the cell densities were estimated S. kawagutii cultures showed a negative correlation between F v/F m and growth irradiance. These results indicate that F v/F m is dependent on the light history of the cultures and on the individual sensitivity of each species, and independent of their nutrient status. Nitrate starvation was analyzed by measuring changes in the quantum yield of fluorescence (Fv/F m), electron transport rate (ETR) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) at five time points along the growth curves under three conditions: control (C), without nitrogen (N–), and with ammonia (N+) as a nitrogen source sufficient to meet daily nitrogen requirements. Cells collected during the exponential growth phase and exposed to N– and N+ showed significant reductions in their maximum ETR relative to controls (20% in S. pilosum and 40% in S. kawagutii). The loss of electron transport capacity is consistent with a sink limitation rather than the result of nitrogen starvation. Under nitrate-starvation, the induction of NPQ resulted in effective protection against photosystem II damage in S. pilosum. In contrast, S. kawagutii cells failed to induced NPQ resulting in a concomitant increase in the excitation pressure over photosystem II leading to damage. Collectively the data indicate that F v/F m is not a robust indicator of nitrogen limitation in symbiotic dinoflagellates and that protection against photosystem II damage under sink limitations, is largely dependent on the differential capacities of each species to induce NPQ.Communicated by P.W. The reproductive parameters of three species of barnacles common in warm-water regions,Balanus amphitrite Darwin,B. eburneus Gould andB. trigonus Darwin, cultured singly or in pairs for 2 1/2 yr, were compared. All specimens, collected from Tokyo Bay and studied between 1985 and 1987, were fed on newly hatchedArtemia sp. larvae (Tetra strain) and phytoplankton culture and were maintained under constant temperature (20°C) and controlled photoperiods (10 h light:14 h dark). The breeding frequencies of these three species were equally high, from 2 to 4 broods mo–1 in the first year; they were relatively high between October and February, averaging 3 broods mo–1.B. amphitrite, B. eburneus andB. trigonus produced 24, 21 and 11 broods yr–1, respectively. Brood size was quite variable among the three species examined, yielding 4000 embryos brood–1 inB. amphitrite andB. eburneus and 6000 inB. trigonus. Brood interval averaged 4 to 9 d. The moult occurred over short intervals of 4 to 10 d moult–1. Both breeding and moulting frequencies were influenced by low temperature and starvation. Self-fertilization was observed in all species and was more frequent inB. amphitrite than inB. eburneus andB. trigonus. Nutritional condition and temperature seemed to be the main external factors regulating both breeding and moulting processes in barnacles.  相似文献

Intraspecific genetic variation among samples of six species of reef fishes,Chromis cyanea, Stegastes partitus, S. planifrons, S. leucostictus, S. dorsopunicans, andThalassoma bifasciatum collected over a 2 wk period in 1990 at La Parguera, Puerto Rico, USA and Discovery Bay, Jamaica, was evaluated using starch-gel electrophoresis. On average, products of 33 protein-coding loci were resolved in each species. Levels of polymorphism (0.95 criterion) ranged from 3.1% inS. dorsopunicans to 42.4% inC. cyanea. Estimates of genetic divergence among samples and indices of genetic subdivision were small in all six study species: mean genetic distances ranged from 0.000 to 0.002 and mean fixation indices ranged from 0.004 to 0.035. Estimates of numbers of migrants per generation (mN e) ranged from 5.1 to 11.6, indicating that substantial genetic exchange probably occurs over the relatively large geographic distance (ca. 1000 km) separating coral reef communities of La Parguera and Discovery Bay. The estimates ofmN e may be biased by a sampling strategy involving only two localities, and should therefore be interpreted with caution. With inferences based solely on allozyme frequency data under a primary assumption of neutrality, genetic substructuring of populations of the six study species on a macrogeographic scale appears virtually nonexistent.  相似文献

Feeding behaviors of the gastropods Batillaria zonalis, a suspension and deposit feeder, and Cerithideopsilla cingulata, an obligate deposit feeder, were studied to examine their effect on dynamics of suspended materials, total nitrogen (TN) and total organic carbon (TOC) in sediments. Suspension feeding in B. zonalis was observed in detail visually, as it had been previously unreported. An experimental system where B. zonalis and C. cingulata were cultured for 10 weeks, using previously frozen microalgae Nannochloropsis oculata as food, was then constructed. During feeding observations, the suspension-feeding B. zonalis formed a mucus food cord to entangle particulate materials, which were subsequently ingested. The feeding mode of B. zonalis is hence categorized as ctenidial filter feeding. For the culture experiments, decreases in suspended materials were seen only in the B. zonalis cultures, while the control (no gastropods) and C. cingulata cultures remained nearly unchanged. Sediment TN and TOC showed no significant differences between B. zonalis (with mean TN at 0.0345% and mean TOC at 0.261%) and control cultures (with TN at 0.0389% and TOC at 0.331%), but the sediments in C. cingulata cultures had lower levels (with TN at 0.0204% and TOC at 0.156%). The C/N ratios were similar for both B. zonalis (7.55) and C. cingulata (7.68) cultures, and both were lower than the control cultures (8.55). The filtration rate for B. zonalis was lower than that previously observed in bivalves inhabiting the same intertidal flat (e.g. Cyclina sinensis, Grafrarium tumidum and Barbatia virescens). However, Batillaria zonalis occurs at higher abundances than these bivalves. Therefore, it is expected that this species has a large affect upon the transport of suspended materials to the sediments. The addition of TN and TOC to sediments in B. zonalis cultures was probably caused by biodeposition, but deposit feeding by B. zonalis may have restrained the accumulation of those components. The impact of deposit feeding in Cerithideopsilla cingulata cultures was most probably stronger than sedimentation and biodeposition, because of the lower sediment TN and TOC. Bioturbation by both B. zonalis and C. cingulata yields the same effect on sediment quality, as indicated by the low C/N in the culture sediment of both treatments, despite difference in feeding modes. This paper demonstrates, for the first time, the importance of gastropods in bioturbation and removal of suspended materials in subtropical tidal flat habitats.Communicated by T. Summary The geometric isomers (E,E)-, (E,Z)-, (Z,E)-, and (Z,Z)-8,10-dodecadien-1-yl acetate were identified as sex pheromone components or sex attractants in the tribes Eucosmini and Grapholitini of the tortricid subfamily Olethreutinae. Species belonging to the more ancestral Tortricinae were not attracted. Each one isomer was behaviourally active in males ofCydia andGrapholita (Grapholitini), either as main pheromone compound, attraction synergist or attraction inhibitor. Their reciprocal attractive/antagonistic activity in a number of species enables specific communication with these four compounds.Pammene, as well as otherGrapholita andCydia responded to the monoenic 8- or 10-dodecen-1-yl acetates. Of the tribes Olethreutini and Eucosmini,Hedya, Epiblema, Eucosma, andNotocelia trimaculana were also attracted to 8,10-dodecadien-1-yl acetates, but several otherNotocelia to 10,12-tetradecadien-1-yl acetates. The female sex pheromones ofC. fagiglandana, C. pyrivora, C. splendana, Epiblema foenella andNotocelia roborana were identified. (E,E)- and (E,Z)-8,10-dodecadien-1-yl acetate are producedvia a commonE9 desaturation pathway inC. splendana. Summary A comparative morphological and chemical study of six endemic species ofCataglyphis from the Iberian Peninsula:C. ibericus, C. rosenhaueri, C. hispanicus, C. humeya, C. velox andC. floricola and the Moroccan speciesC. bombycinus is described. The morphological study relied primarily on genitalia characteristics, whereas the chemical study concentrated on the postpharyngeal gland constituents. Cladograms based on the morphological and chemical data were performed using Ward's method. The dendrogram based on morphological features revealed that the IberianCataglyphis can be classified into three species groupsalbicans, altisquamis andemmae. The same pattern occurred when the dimethylalkanes constituents of the postpharyngeal gland were utilised as character states, with a slight displacement of species within thealtisquamis group. However, when the complete hydrocarbon blend was utilised major discrepancies in the dendrograms occurred.Cataglyphis velox proved to be very similar toC. bombycinus, whereasC. floricola clustered with the other two species of thealtisquamis group. Based on the geographical distribution and paleontological data (Tinaut 1993) it is assumed thatC. floricola recently invaded the Iberian Peninsula. Based on the chemical findings we postulate that chemical character displacement occurred inC. floricola as a result of its sympatry withC. velox after the former colonized the Iberian Peninsula. We further discuss the possible reason for the different dendrograms obtained when only the dimethylalkanes are considered and its implication for the communicative role of the postpharyngeal gland secretion in these ants.  相似文献

A plasmid clone containing highly repeated DNA sequence fromAcropora formosa was used to probe slot blots of genomic DNA and Southern blots of Taq I digests from other Acroporidae. Homologous repeated DNA sequences were detected in 12 otherAcropora species, but not in three other species of Acroporidae (Astreopora sp.,Montipora digitata andM. aequituberculata). Slot-blot experiments indicated that the repeated sequences inAcropora latistella, A. tenuis, A. longicyathus andA. nobilis were distantly homologous with the clonedA. formosa repeat, whereas those inA. pulchra, A. millepora, A. valida, A. hyacinthus andA. microphthalma were highly homologous with this probe and those inA. digitifera were intermediate. Relatedness of the highhomology group toA. formosa was assessed by comparison of Taq I-digestion patterns. The predominant repeats inA. pulchra andA. hyacinthus had two Taq I sites per repeat unit (as didA. formosa), whereas repeats inA. digitifera, A. valida andA. microphthalma had one Taq I site per repeat; the pattern given byA. millepora implied that its highly homologous repeat units contained either one or two Taq I sites. Within the high-homology group, decreasing number of Taq I sites implies increasing taxonomic distance fromA. formosa. The relatedness series implied by these data differs from that based on morphological criteria.  相似文献

The metabolic responses to a series of low oxygen tensions were compared for two species of Mediterranaean bivalves,Mytilus galloprovincialis andScapharca inaequivalvis. Whereas both species have well-developed and similar tolerances of anoxia, the metabolic responses ofS. inaequivalvis to low oxygen tensions indicate a substantially greater tolerance of hypoxia. Compared withM. galloprovincialis, the responses ofS. inaequivalvis included the ability to maintain a constant oxygen consumption down to a much lower pO2 value (ca. 1.7 vs 3.4 ppm), and a lower critical pO2 for the recruitment of fermentative pathways of ATP production (ca. 1 vs 3 ppm). Furthermore, a graded increase in the output of anaerobic products (succinate, alanine) occured at oxygen tensions below 3 ppm inM. galloprovincialis and reached a maximum at 1.6 ppm whereas inS. inaequivalvis the net accumulation of anaerobic products at the lowest oxygen tension tested (0.5 ppm) was still substantially less than the level of production output in complete anoxia. This suggests that fermentative pathways are maximally activated at all oxygen tensions below 1.6 ppm inM. galloprovincialis whereas rates of anaerobic pathways are still less than maximum at 0.5 ppm inS. inaequivalvis. These results indicate that in situations of declining oxygen tensions, such as occur due to eutrophication,M. galloprovincialis would not only begin to experience metabolic stress at higher oxygen tensions thanS. inaequivalvis but would experience greater stress at any given pO2. Two herbivorous species of the temperate labroid fish family Odacidae were examined for the presence of gut endosymbionts.Odax cyanomelas (Richardson) from southern Australia andO. pullus Schneider from New Zealand both feed on macroalgae, yet appear to lack obvious morphological specializations for herbivory. Specimens ofO. cyanomelas andO. pullus were collected in 1989 from Sydney, Australia, and Leigh, New Zealand, respectively. Both species were found to harbour dense concentrations of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbes in their lower intestines. The various cell types present were examined by light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Epifluorescence microscope counts were used to quantify the distribution and abundance of the microbiota along the gut ofO. cyanomelas. Major differences were observed in the composition of microbiota between the two species.O. cyanomelas contained spirilla, large rod-shaped bacteria, filamentous bacteria and two forms of trichomonad flagellates.O. pullus also harboured dense, large, rod-shaped bacterial populations, but lacked the other two large prokaryote categories found inO. cyanomelas, and contained diplomonad flagellates. The large rod-shaped bacteria found in both species resembled prokaryotes described from other herbivorous fish and termites.  相似文献

The toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS), produced naturally in an oxygenated environment, led to the development of antioxidant defenses by aerobic organisms to prevent tissue damage. Polar marine waters are regarded as a strongly prooxidant ecosystem, due to the high dissolved oxygen level and intense UV radiation during summer, while the deep waters are considered refuges against oxidative stress. In order to further elucidate the prooxidant and antioxidant forces associated with cold-water ecosystems and the implications of UV radiation, we sampled three amphipod species living at three different depths in the same water mass of the Arctic Ocean, characterized by low temperature (ca. 0°C), high oxygen level, and high ROS concentration in the surface water. The three species were the deep-sea amphipod Eurythenes gryllus, the benthic sublittoral amphipod Anonyx nugax and the surface-water species Gammarus wilkitzkii inhabiting the ice pack. The total oxyradical scavenging capacity (TOSC) was measured in the cytosolic fraction of the digestive gland and in the cell-free hemolymph of the three amphipod species. A significantly low TOSC toward peroxyl and peroxynitrite radicals (P<0.05) in E. gryllus compared with the shallow-water species (A. nugax) can be explained by the low metabolism of the deep-sea species. In the cell-free hemolymph, TOSC values are similar between E. gryllus and A. nugax, while in G. wilkitzkii a lower and higher TOSC toward hydroxyl and peroxynitrite, respectively, indicate specific adaptation to oxidative stress. Experimental exposure of A. nugax and G. wilkitzkii to H2O2 resulted in a significant change in TOSC (P<0.05) measured in the digestive gland and in the cell-free hemolymph of A. nugax, while no change (P>0.05) was noted in G. wilkitzkii. These data suggest that A. nugax is highly susceptible to oxidative stress and that G. wilkitzkii is characterized by a mechanism that prevents the diffusion of exogenous ROS through the gills or allows excretion of internal H2O2 through the gills to the environment.Communicated by M. Total lipids, hydrocarbons, wax esters, triacylglycerols, and phospholipids were determined for 22 major biomass species of zooplankton and fish in an Antarctic mesopelagic community that were collected in 1982 and 1983. Lipid levels were similar to levels in more temperate mesopelagic species. Total lipid concentration was depth related, with all lipid-rich species being collected at depths greater than 230 m. Wax ester content in copepods (60 to 70% of the total lipid) was generally higher than in subtropical species. Lipids indicated three predator-prey relationships (Parandania boecki-Atolla wyvillei, Thysanoessa macrura-Calanoides acutus andEurythenes gryllus-Atolla wyvillei). These were confirmed by gut content analyses. The mesopelagic fishBathylagus antarcticus, Pleuragramma antarcticum, andProtomyctophum bolini stored most lipid intramuscularly, whereasElectrona antarctica andGymnoscopelus nicholsi contained extensive stores in subcutaneous lipid sacs. The intramuscular lipids inP. antarcticum and the subcutaneous lipid sacs ofE. antarctica were primarily wax esters, possibly used for increased buoyancy or long-term energy storage. Unlike the odd-carbon preference of aliphatic hydrocarbons which typifies terrestrial plants and temperate marine organisms, even-carbon chain-length paraffins predominate in 80% of the Antarctic species analyzed. Although the source of these even-carbon n-alkanes cannot be determined from our data, their dominance in the species analyzed suggests that an unusual biochemical pathway may be responsible for their synthesis in this ecosystem.  相似文献

The effect of diel and seasonal changes in the distribution of fishes on a subtropical sandy beach on the southeastern coast of Brazil were studied. Seine netting was carried out on both seasonal and diel scales between July 1998 and June 1999. A total of 46 fish species was recorded, six being numerically dominant: Anchoa tricolor, Gerres aprion, Harengula clupeola, Atherinella brasiliensis, Mugil liza and Diapterus rhombeus. Seasonal changes in abundance of dominant species were detected. Species dominant in winter were Anchoa tricolor, H. clupeola and Atherinella brasiliensis; in spring, Anchoa tricolor and G. aprion; in summer G. aprion and D. rhombeus; and in autumn M. liza and H. clupeola. Overall, diel patterns did not reveal any significant trends; however, if we consider each season separately, an increase in A. tricolor abundance was recorded during the day in winter/spring, being replaced at night by H. clupeola in winter, and by G. aprion in spring. Increases in number of individuals and biomass at sunset, and decreases during the night were recorded. The winter/spring inshore/offshore movements at diel scale performed by the three most abundant species demonstrate that diel fluctuation acts more at a species-specific level than at a structural one; in summer there was no evidence of diel movements due to a heavy influx of G. aprion and D. rhombeus, which use the area throughout day and night, increasing overall abundance. Seasonal movements seems to be related to ontogenetic change in species, while diel movements in the fish assemblage seem to be more related to physiological requirements, such feeding activity of each particular species, than to physico-chemical conditions.Communicated by O. Two distinct modes of algal endosymbiont acquisition exist in corals, a direct transmission from the parental colony to the eggs and a larval or post-larval uptake from the environment. The former, maternal-transmission mode is expected to be a more closed system, while the latter is believed to be an open system. Here we test the hypothesis that the diversity of symbionts in closed systems is lower than that in open systems. We examine the identity and diversity of the algal endosymbionts (zooxanthellae) in 25 Montipora species sampled from Irian Jaya (Indonesia) and Magnetic Island (central Great Barrier Reef) and compare the results with those previously obtained from Acropora species, which belong to the same family. All Montipora colonies examined harbour clade C zooxanthellae, with two colonies harbouring both clade C and D zooxanthellae simultaneously. Two algal strains (named C· and D· in this study) present in Montipora have not been observed in Acropora, and may have co-evolved with Montipora. Symbiodinium C· shows approximately 5% sequence divergence from C strains observed in Acropora spp. and occurs in 76% of the colonies examined. Nevertheless, several other C strains commonly found in other corals occur in some of the Montipora colonies. Montipora species transmit their algal endosymbionts directly to the eggs, while Acropora species have to acquire zooxanthellae from the environment every generation. Contrary to our expectations, the diversity of zooxanthellae is similar for the two genera, indicating that the mode of symbiont transmission (i.e. maternal versus horizontal) does not affect symbiont diversity in acroporid corals.Communicated by M.S.
