We examined the preference of Atlantic molly females (Poecilia mexicana) to associate with a well-fed or a starved male in simultaneous choice tests. Females from three different populations were tested in three treatments: (1) the females could choose on the basis of multiple cues from the males (visual plus non-visual); (2) only non-visual cues could be perceived in darkness, (3) only visual cues were presented. The three tested populations differ clearly in their ecology: one population occurs in a typical river habitat, the second one in a milky sulfur creek outside a cave, and the third population occurs in a cave habitat (cave molly). In the river-dwelling population, females never showed a preference. In the population from the sulfur creek, females preferred to associate with the well-nourished male when visual cues from the males were available. Only cave molly females exhibited a strong preference for well-nourished males in all treatments. A morphological comparison demonstrated that wild-caught males from river habitats are typically in a good nutritional state. In the sulfur creek, males showed signs of starvation. Cave molly males were in an even worse nutritional state. In the cave population, saturated males probably indicate high fitness, thereby driving the evolution of the preference for good male nutritional state.Communicated by K. Lindström  相似文献

We investigated whether female association preferences for males are influenced by black spot disease (BSD), a parasite induced change of the host phenotype. We compared three different species of fish: a gynogenetic hybrid species, Poecilia formosa (amazon molly) and two sexual species (Poecilia latipinna and Poecilia mexicana), which were involved in the natural hybridisation leading to the amazon molly. Contrary to their sexual relatives, asexual amazon mollies significantly avoided images of males infected with black spot disease. We propose that amazon molly females have direct fitness benefits from choosing healthy males. The adaptive significance of the preference for BSD-uninfected males in the asexual amazon molly is yet unclear but may involve avoidance of predation or parasite infection as well as increased sperm availability.  相似文献

Cave animals are widely recognised as model organisms to study regressive evolutionary processes like the reduction of eyes. In this paper, we report on the regressive evolution of species discrimination in the cave molly, Poecilia mexicana, which, unlike other cave fishes, still has functional eyes. This allowed us to examine the response to both visual and non-visual cues involved in species discrimination. When surface-dwelling females were given a chance to associate with either a conspecific or a swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii) female, they strongly preferred the conspecific female both when multiple cues and when solely visual cues were available to the female. No association preference was observed when only non-visual cues were provided. In contrast, cave-dwelling females showed no preference under all testing conditions, suggesting that species recognition mechanisms have been reduced. We discuss the role of species discrimination in relation to habitat differences.  相似文献

Two species of seed-eating true bugs, Neacoryphus bicrucis (Heteroptera: Lygaeidae) and Margus obscurator (Heteroptera: Coreidae) co-occur on ragwort, Senecio tomentosus, in southern Georgia, USA. Males of both species sometimes engage in chases and protracted grappling with females that flee initial mountings. Sometimes genital coupling occurs while the wriggling female is restrained in the male's grasp. Chases, grappling, and mounting attempts are misdirected toward heterospecific females, heterospecific males, or conspecific males. In a laboratory study, confinement of mated N. bicrucis females with either conspecific or heterospecific males reduced fecundity by approximately one-half relative to mated females confined only with other females. Perhaps as a consequence of this, N. bicrucis females frequently leave areas of high host plant density, where they prefer to oviposit, when males are abundant. The abundance of each species is positively correlated with host plant density but the two species rarely occur together on the same plants. This may be an effect of heterospecific courtship which induces the flight of N. bicrucis more than the flight of M. obscurator. The laboratory results suggest that copulations following chases and grappling represent sexual harassment, not a mechanism of active female choice for a vigorous mate. As sexual harassment imposes high fitness costs that favor abandonment of host plants, it may, when misdirected, incidentally limit habitat use by ecologically similar species. Summary Experiments were designed to determine the effects of male pigmentation patterns on female choice in guppies. When presented with a series of variably-colored males, females of different genetic strain consistently exhibited similar preferences (Tables 1 and 2), preferring those males with the greatest development of both carotenoid and iridescent pigments (Table 3). A partial rank correlation analysis of pigments of males indicates positive correlations between the iridescent and carotenoid pigments and also between melanins and showiness (Table 4). Only when either the carotenoid or iridescent pigments were held constant was there any effect of the other pigments on the ranking order of males by the females. Other pigments appear to be relatively unimportant in influencing female choice of males. These results indicate that females discriminate among males on the basis of color and that females of different strains prefer the same male colors rather than those characteristics of males of their own strain. The results support those models of sexual selection that hold that sexually selected traits honestly advertise the phenotypic and genetic qualities of males; they do not support models of runaway selection for particular male traits, such as first proposed by Fisher (1930).  相似文献

Because agonistic behaviour can increase an individual's risk of predation, natural selection should favour individuals that modify their behaviour in the face of predation hazard in ways that maximise fitness. We investigated experimentally the effects of an increase in the apparent risk of predation on male-male competition within mixed-sex shoals of the Trinidadian guppy (Poecilia reticulata). We show that males engaged in significantly fewer aggressive interactions with conspecific males in the presence of a fish predator. However, they continued to court and attempt copulations with females at the same rate irrespective of the level of predation risk. In comparison, under predation hazard, female guppies were less responsive sexually and avoided fewer male copulation attempts. Such predator-mediated changes in male-male agonistic interactions and female sexual responsiveness towards males have important implications for the mode and intensity of sexual selection within populations.  相似文献

Allozyme and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genetic variation was compared in orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus Collett) collected from waters off southern Australia and from waters about 22 000 km away in the North Atlantic west of Scotland. Samples were screened for 11 polymorphic allozyme loci and with 9 restriction enzymes. Significant heterogeneity between the two areas was detected for three allozyme loci (ADA *, CK * and GPI-1 *), and the overall G ST (gene-diversity statistic) value of 1% was small but significant. Significant mtDNA haplotype heterogeneity was observed after 2- of haplotype frequencies but not after a G ST analysis. Nucleotide sequence-diversity analysis showed very low net divergence (0.0023%) between the two samples. The Australian orange roughy had a lower allozyme heterozygosity and a lower mitochondrial DNA nucleon diversity than the North Atlantic sample. The very limited, although significant, allozyme and mitochondrial DNA heterogeneity between these areas suggests that there is some gene flow between these two populations. The species appears to be widespread, with its presence reported from the southern Pacific, southern Indian, and northern and southern Atlantic Oceans, and it is likely that gene flow between the antipodes is mediated by stepping-stone exchange between adjacent populations rather than by direct migration.  相似文献

Female mate choice is a complex process involving both genetic and social factors. Extrinsic cues may play a role in determining how these factors interact. Mate-choice copying is a socially influenced mate-choice strategy in which females observe other females during mate choice and choose the same male as those females. Previous studies have shown that female sailfin mollies (Poecilia latipinna) prefer larger over smaller males, and this preference is assumed to be genetically based. In this study we tested, first, whether sailfin molly females changed their mate preference in favour of smaller males when they could obtain more information by observing two model females sequentially for 5 min each or one model female for 20 min next to the smaller male. Second, we tested if females that had changed their preferences in favour of smaller males maintained this learned preference afterwards. In copying experiments, females changed their preferences in favour of smaller males both when they could observe two model females each for 5 min near by a smaller male and when they could observe one model female for 20 min near the smaller male. In the latter case, females maintained this learned preference for smaller males up to 5 weeks after the copying experiment. This shows that mate-choice copying has a long-lasting effect on mate-choice decisions in sailfin molly females and that mate-choice copying can serve as a mechanism for cultural inheritance of mate preferences in females.  相似文献

Orangutan males demonstrate intrasexual dimorphism with corresponding alternative mating strategies. Sexual harassment is the predominant feature of the mating strategy that subadult males pursue. This study investigated the countertactics that females employ to reduce sexual harassment by subadult males. I observed 207 copulations during more than 9,000 h of focal follows of wild Sumatran orangutans at the Suaq Balimbing Research Station over a 23-month period. Rates of copulations initiated by subadult males increased during months of high fruit abundance, and most mating attempts were directed toward females with weaned infants. Simultaneous harassment by multiple subadult males increased significantly during months of high fruit abundance, and nearly all adult female-adult male consortships occurred during periods of high fruit abundance. Females who maintained spatial association with adult males, either via consortship or by nonmating temporary parties, received lower rates of harassment, as measured by the success rate of subadult male mating attempts. Adult female-adult male parties did not always result in mating between the associating dyad. Female initiation of protective services by adult males is one social tactic that female orangutans employ to reduce sexual harassment. Females therefore receive direct services from adult males, which may be one factor that influences female mate choice in Sumatran orangutans.  相似文献

We examined the social organization and reproductive pattern of a population of Sparisoma cretense L. at Lampedusa Island (Italy). During the breeding season (July to September) individuals occur either in territorial or in non-territorial groups, which quantitatively differ with respect to use of space, sex-ratio and sexual activity. Territorial groups consist of one male plus one to three females, whereas in non-territorial groups as many as 54 fish share a common area. Among non-territorial groups, variations, in both sex-ratio and behavior, suggest they could represent either feeding aggregations or reproductive aggregations. Spawning, always in pairs, occurs daily in a short period of time before dusk and has been observed only in territorial groups. Group spawning has never been observed, but another alternative mating tactic, streaking on pair spawning, was recorded. In the non-breeding season fish do not aggregate in organized social units. Histological examination of gonads showed that adults are larger than 12 cm total length. Females have an asynchronous ovary, typical of species spawning several times during the breeding season. Males show secondary testes, indicating that their gonads develop ovaries as juveniles, which are later redifferentiated into functional testes. Histological and demographic data seem to indicate that, as in other species of this genus, prematurational sex-change occurs. The sexual pattern appears to be essentially gonochoristic, but the potential for sex-change is not excluded. Received: 5 January 1999 / Accepted: 22 June 1999  相似文献

We studied the genetic structure of the Mediterranean killifish Aphanius fasciatus. Analysis of the sequence variation in a 372-bp portion of the mitochondrial control region in 623 fish from 27 sampling sites along the species’ distributional range (Tyrrhenian coast, Sardinia, Sicily, Adriatic coast, Malta, Tunisia, and Greece) yielded 120 distinct haplotypes. Most of the haplotypes are unique, and only 15 % are shared among different populations. The high F ST value (=0.80) suggests a strong population genetic structuring. The phylogenetic analysis based on Bayesian inference, maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony, and the median-joining network show a sharp separation of the Southeastern Sicilian populations (belonging to the Hyblean region) and of the fluvial Tunisian population of Rio Melah from the others. The Adriatic, the Eastern Sicilian, and the Greek populations are well differentiated, while the group of populations from the Central-Western Mediterranean does not show a clear pattern of differentiation. Our findings indicate that the current genetic structuring of A. fasciatus reflects historical geographical patterns occurring within the Mediterranean basin from the Late Miocene to the Pleistocene. The presence of divergent evolutionary entities in the Hyblean region and the Tunisian Rio Melah supports their inclusion as target areas for the conservation of A. fasciatus.  相似文献

Sexual harassment by males has the potential to affect almost any aspect of female behavior and life history. Using Atlantic mollies (Poecilia mexicana) as a model—a species in which males do not court but almost constantly try to forcefully mate with females—we asked whether and how male harassment influences (a) females’ time budgets and (b) feeding rates (e.g., through frequent flight from male approaches), and (c) whether metabolic rates are increased as a response to stress. Field observations in a natural P. mexicana population revealed that males (average feeding rate 15%) spent far less time feeding than females (60%), and clearly traded off frequent pursuit of females with foraging. Most importantly, females’ feeding times were dramatically reduced when being pursued by a harassing male. Also in standardized lab experiments, females spent significantly less time feeding when accompanied by a male as compared to being in the presence of another female. This effect was also observed when partner fish (male or female) were presented only visually, but could not interact physically with the focal female. It seems, therefore, that females increase vigilance when a harassing male is around, which keeps them from feeding even before males actually approach them. Based on the latter result, we asked whether a stress-induced increase in metabolic rates would be discernible. We measured oxygen consumption and gill ventilation frequencies (opercular rates) of females in different social contexts (alone, with another female, or a male). The predicted, strong body mass dependency of both physiological parameters was uncovered, but no evidence for an effect of social context was detected. We argue that male harassment represents such a constant (but non-lethal) stressor for poeciliid females that their metabolic stress responses have adapted to this through habituation.  相似文献

Nine populations of Aphanius fasciatus Nardo, 1827 from the central Mediterranean were analysed by examining the mitochondrial control region and the morphology of the bony elements of the skull and vertebral column, to study the degree of intraspecific differentiation of A. fasciatus considering the level of isolation of the different populations and the palaeogeographic history of the central Mediterranean area. Both the molecular and morphological analyses differentiate between the populations, even if the topologies of the two trees are different. Molecular and osteological investigations have consistently demonstrated a well-supported differentiation of the south-eastern Sicilian populations both within the same group (Tigano et al. in Ital J Zool 71:1124–1133, 2004a; Tigano et al. in Abstract volume XI European Congress of Ichthyology, Tallin, Estonia, 2004b), and from the populations from western Sicily, Tunisia and the island of Malta. The molecular results show that the nine populations are characterised by haplotypes that are well defined in relation to a probably limited gene flow; while, as regards the morphological data the differentiation found could be explained in terms of the geographic isolation of the various populations, although the influence of environmental factors, which differ greatly between the various sites where the populations live, cannot be ruled out.  相似文献

Summary Luyten and Liley (1985) obtained evidence that in populations of Trinidad guppies from two clear headwater streams, where Rivulus harth is the major aquatic predator, selection has favored visual aspects of male mating behavior — display activity and conspicuous coloration. Males in two lowland turbid stream populations, with numerous aquatic predators, were found to rely more heavily upon non-display components of courtship. In this study males of the four populations were placed in competition in clear water for mating with females of the same populations. Males of two populations were allowed to compete in turbid water. Mating success was determined on the basis of the frequency of insemination and the proportion of sperm attributable to males of the competing populations. The sperm of competing males were identified by radioisotope labelling and autoradiographic techniques. Males from headwater populations were more successful than lowland males in mating with headwater females in clear water. There was no difference in mating success of headwater and lowland males in competition for lowland females in clear water, but in turbid water lowland males were more successful in inseminating lowland females. Males were more successful in mating with females of their own population when the two headwater population were in competition. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that conspicuous coloration and high frequency and duration of display are adaptations to clear water conditions, and that non-display tactics are adapted to turbid water. Evidence of intrapopulation preferences suggest that male traits and female sexual responses in the guppy have evolved in parallel as predicted by sexual selection theory.  相似文献

Serranicotyle labracis (Van Beneden and Hesse, 1863) Maillard, Euzet and Silan, 1988 (synonym: Microcotyle labracis Van Beneden and Hesse, 1863) is a monogenean Polyopisthocotylea and a gill parasite of the bass Dicentrarchus labrax (Linné, 1758). Analysis of a western Mediterranean population of this parasite (Gulf of Lions, Languedoc, France) clarified several aspects of its biology. Its location in the gill biotope (Silan et al. 1987) was not fundamentally different from that found by Oliver (1977) and Winch (1983), but its distribution in host populations differed from that reported in the earlier studies; it displayed a negative binomial distribution in the study zone. At a finer level of observation, the behaviour of the hosts, as a function of degree of maturity and sex, appeared to determine more than any other factor the extent of infestation by the parasite. Previous suggestions in the literature to account for these differences in population dynamics are discussed.  相似文献

Previous studies have found strong evidences for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) egg retention in fjords, which are caused by the combination of vertical salinity structure, estuarine circulation, and egg specific gravity, supporting small-scaled geographical differentiations of local populations. Here, we assess the variability in egg specific gravity for selected local populations of this species, that is, two fjord-spawning populations and one coastal-spawning population from Northern Norway (66–71°N/10–25°E). Eggs were naturally spawned by raised broodstocks (March to April 2009), and egg specific gravity was measured by a density-gradient column. The phenotype of egg specific gravity was similar among the three local populations. However, the associated variability was greater at the individual level than at the population level. The noted gradual decrease in specific gravity from gastrulation to hatching with an increase just before hatching could be a generic pattern in pelagic marine fish eggs. This study provides needed input to adequately understand and model fish egg dispersal.  相似文献

Summary In laboratory choice experiments, receptive female western mosquitofish Gambusia affinis affinis (deprived of contact with males 30 days) preferred the larger of two males. When two males differing in size were placed with a receptive female, the larger was generally able to monopolize access to her, but not when the female was not receptive. In other experiments, a single male was placed with a receptive or non-receptive female. These experiments showed size-correlated differences in male mating behavior. Smaller males were more likely to chase non-receptive females and attempt to inseminate them forcibly, while larger males continued to court females even if they were non-receptive. Even when the female was receptive, there was some evidence of size-correlated differences in levels of courtship and chasing.  相似文献

Tail size and female choice in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata)   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Summary Under laboratory conditions, female guppies demonstrate a clear preference for males with larger tails, and this preference translates into enhanced reproductive fitness for these males. Females also prefer males with higher display rates, a behavior which appears to be linked to tail size, but which can be experimentally disassociated. This appears to be a case of female-choice sexual selection.

Protein electrophoresis on starch gels was used to investigate population genetic structure of the barnacles Chthamalus montagui Southward and C. stellatus (Poli) over their north-east Atlantic and Mediterranean ranges. In each species, a single locus exhibited marked differentiation of allele frequencies between Atlantic and Mediterranean localities; in C. stellatus, genetic differentiation between the two basins had not previously been noted. In both species, mean heterozygosity per locus appeared higher in the Mediterranean samples than in the Atlantic, and Mediterranean populations had more alleles at the loci studied. Possible explanations for the differentiation between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean populations are discussed. Received: 30 May 1996 / Accepted: 17 September 1996  相似文献
