Despite their burden in urban particulate air pollution, road traffic non-exhaust emissions are often uncontrolled and information about the effectiveness of mitigation measures on paved roads is still scarce. The present study is aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of mechanical sweeping/water flushing treatments in mitigating urban road dust resuspension and to quantify the real benefit in terms of ambient PM10 concentrations. To this aim a specific campaign was carried out in a heavily trafficked central road of Barcelona (Spain), a Mediterranean city suffering from a traffic-related pollution, both for a high car density and a frequent lack of precipitation. Several street washings were performed by means of mechanical sweepers and pressure water during night in all traffic lanes and sidewalks. PM10 levels were simultaneously compared with four reference urban background air quality stations to interpret any meteorological variability. At the downwind measurement site, PM10 concentrations registered a mean daily decrease of 8.8 μg m?3 during the 24 h after street washing treatments. However 3.7–4.9 μg m?3 of such decrease were due to the meteorological variability detected at the upwind site, as well as at two of the reference sites. This reveals that an effective decrease of 4–5 μg m?3 (7–10%) can be related to street washing efficiency. Mitigation of road dust resuspension was confirmed by investigating the chemical composition of airborne-PM10 filters. Concentrations of Cu, Sb, Fe and mineral matter decrease significantly with respect to concentrations of elemental carbon, used as tracer for exhaust diesel emissions. High efficiency of street washing in reducing road dust loads was found by performing periodic samplings both on the treated and the untreated areas.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The revised National Ambient Air Quality Standards for PM include fine particulate standards based upon mass measurements of PM25. It is possible in arid and semi-arid regions to observe significant coarse mode intrusion in the PM2.5 measurement. In this work, continuous PM10, PM2.5, and PM1.0 were measured during several windblown dust events in Spokane, WA. PM2 5 constituted ~30% of the PM10 during the dust event days, compared with ~48% on the non-dusty days preceding the dust events. Both PM10 and PM2.5 were enhanced during the dust events. However, PM1.0 was not enhanced during dust storms that originated within the state of Washington. During a dust storm that originated in Asia and impacted Spokane, PM1.0 was also enhanced, although the Asian dust reached Washington during a period of stagnation and poor dispersion, so that local sources were also contributing to high particulate levels. The “intermodal” region of PM, defined as particles ranging in aerodynamic size from 1.0 to 2.5 um, was found to represent a significant fraction of PM25 (~51%) during windblown dust events, compared with 28% during the non-dusty days before the dust events.  相似文献

We have developed a model for evaluating the mass-based concentrations of urban particulate matter. The basic model assumption is that local vehicular traffic is responsible for a substantial fraction of the street-level concentrations of both PM10 and NOx, either due to primary emissions or resuspension from street surfaces. The modelling system utilises the data from an air quality monitoring network in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. We have determined linear relationships between the measured urban PM10 data against those of NOx in various urban surroundings, based on continuously measured hourly concentration values. The data was obtained from two stations in central Helsinki and one suburban station in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area during a period of 3 yr, from 1996 to 1998. The model also includes a treatment of the regional background concentrations, and resuspended particulate matter. The model performance was evaluated against the measured PM10 data from the above-mentioned three stations and from two other stations, using data that was measured in 1999. We used two alternative model versions, one based on separate correlation parameters (PM10 vs. NOx) for each station, and another based on parameters averaged over the stations considered. We analysed the agreement between the measured and predicted hourly concentration time series, utilising the values of the fractional bias (FB) and the so-called index of agreement (IA). As expected, the model predicts relatively well the yearly mean concentrations of PM10: the FB values range from −0.05 to +0.09. Model performance is also relatively good when predicting the yearly mean values that are classified separately for each hour of the day: the corresponding IA values range from 0.85 to 0.96. However, model performance is substantially worse in predicting the hourly time series of the year: the IA values using the station-specific parameters range from 0.46 to 0.65. The model was applied in evaluating the yearly average spatial concentration distribution of PM10 in central Helsinki, based on the corresponding modelled NOx concentrations. With re-evaluation of a few parameters that can be determined empirically, the model could be evaluated, and most probably applied, in other urban areas as well.  相似文献

Size-segregated aerosol samples (PM2.5 and PM10) were collected during Jan–Dec-2007 from a high-altitude site located in a semi-arid region (Mt. Abu, 24.6 °N, 72.7 °E, 1680 m asl) in order to asses the temporal variability in the abundance of atmospheric mineral dust and its elemental composition over western India. The mass concentrations of fine (PM2.5) and coarse (PM10–2.5) mode aerosols varied from 1.6 to 46.1 and 2.3 to 102 μg m?3 respectively over the annual seasonal cycle; with dominant and uniform contribution of mineral dust (60–80%) in the coarse mode relative to large temporal variability (11–75%) observed in the fine mode. The coarse mass fraction shows a characteristic increase with the wind speed during summer months (Mar to Jun); whereas fine aerosol mass and its elemental composition exhibit conspicuous temporal pattern associated with north-easterlies during wintertime (Oct–Feb). The Fe/Al weight ratio in PM2.5 ranges from 0.5 to 1.0 during winter months. The relative enrichment of Fe in fine mode, compared to the crustal ratio of 0.44, is attributed to the down-wind advective transport of combustion products derived from large-scale biomass burning, industrial and automobile emission sources located in the Indo-Gangetic Plain (northern India). In contrast, Ca/Al and Mg/Al weight ratios show relative enrichment of Ca and Mg in the coarse mode; indicating their dominant contribution from carbonate minerals. This has implication to efficient neutralization of atmospheric acidic species (SO42? and NO3?) by mineral dust over western India.  相似文献

Air quality in Cyprus is influenced by both local and transported pollution, including desert dust storms. We examined PM10 concentration data collected in Nicosia (urban representative) from April 1, 1993, through December 11, 2008, and in Ayia Marina (rural background representative) from January 1, 1999, through December 31, 2008. Measurements were conducted using a Tapered Element Oscillating Micro-balance (TEOM). PM10 concentrations, meteorological records, and satellite data were used to identify dust storm days. We investigated long-term trends using a Generalized Additive Model (GAM) after controlling for day of week, month, temperature, wind speed, and relative humidity. In Nicosia, annual PM10 concentrations ranged from 50.4 to 63.8 μg/m3 and exceeded the EU annual standard limit enacted in 2005 of 40 μg/m3 every year. A large, statistically significant impact of urban sources (defined as the difference between urban and background levels) was seen in Nicosia over the period 2000–2008, and was highest during traffic hours, weekdays, cold months, and low wind conditions. Our estimate of the mean (standard error) contribution of urban sources to the daily ambient PM10 was 24.0 (0.4) μg/m3. The study of yearly trends showed that PM10 levels in Nicosia decreased from 59.4 μg/m3 in 1993 to 49.0 μg/m3 in 2008, probably in part as a result of traffic emission control policies in Cyprus. In Ayia Marina, annual concentrations ranged from 27.3 to 35.6 μg/m3, and no obvious time trends were observed. The levels measured at the Cyprus background site are comparable to background concentrations reported in other Eastern Mediterranean countries. Average daily PM10 concentrations during desert dust storms were around 100 μg/m3 since 2000 and much higher in earlier years. Despite the large impact of dust storms and their increasing frequency over time, dust storms were responsible for a small fraction of the exceedances of the daily PM10 limit.
ImplicationsThis paper examines PM10 concentrations in Nicosia, Cyprus, from 1993 to 2008. The decrease in PM10 levels in Nicosia suggests that the implementation of traffic emission control policies in Cyprus has been effective. However, particle levels still exceeded the European Union annual standard, and dust storms were responsible for a small fraction of the daily PM10 limit exceedances. Other natural particles that are not assessed in this study, such as resuspended soil and sea salt, may be responsible in part for the high particle levels.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to identify areas of potential relevant exposure to pollutants within Rome's urban core. To meet this goal, intensive field campaigns were conducted and simulations were performed, using the flexible air quality regional model (FARM), to study winter and summer pollution episodes. The simulations were performed using a complete emission inventory that included traffic flow model results of the Roman street network to better describe, with respect to the available diffuse national emission inventory, the hourly variation of traffic emissions in the city. The meteorological reconstruction was performed by means of both prognostic and diagnostic models by using experimental data collected during the field campaigns. To evaluate the capability of the FARM model to capture the main features of the selected episodes, a comparison of modelled results against observed air quality data for different pollutants was performed at urban and rural sites. FARM performed well in predicting ozone (O3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations, showing a good reproduction of both daily peaks and their diurnal variations. The model also showed a good capability to reproduce the magnitude of volatile alkane, aromatic and carbonyl compound concentrations. PM10 model results revealed the tendency to under-predict the observed values. PM composition model results were compared with observed data, evidencing good results for elemental carbon (EC), nitrate (NO3) and ammonium (NH4+), underestimation for sulphate (SO42−) and poor performance for organic matter (OM). The soil components of PM were found to be significantly under-predicted by the model, especially during Saharan dust episodes. Overall, the study results show large areas of high O3 and PM10 concentrations where levels of pollutants should be carefully monitored and population exposure evaluated.  相似文献

The concentration and the composition of dust in the indoor environment has been associated with reported symptoms of the sick building syndrome. Levels of airborne concentrations of dust particles are well known. However, the relation to dust on surfaces for office environments are not well described. In this study, 662 measurements were performed of surface dust concentrations on hard surfaces in 19 buildings within Harvard University based on a sticking gelatine foil method. The measure is the dust covered area of the surface as a percentage. In three offices, the build-up of dust on surfaces was measured for a period of five days. Close to these surfaces the airborne PM2.5 and PM10 particle mass concentrations were measured simultanously. A significant correlation between the dust build-up and the difference between the PM10 and the PM2.5 was established. The particle size distribution was measured by means of an Aerodynamic Particle Sizer. The mean dust build-up normalized with the measured PM10 was approximately four times higher than the equivalent calculated by a deposition model. This may in part be due to the effect of preferred orientation when particles settle to a surface. Different data for dust on surfaces and airborne particles in offices were compared. The levels of airborne particles in offices in Europe seem to be higher than the levels in the US.  相似文献

The assessment of the wind blown dust emission for Europe and selected regions of North Africa and Southwest Asia was carried out using a mesoscale model. The mesoscale model was parameterized based on the current literature review. The model provides data on PM10 emission from several dust reservoirs (anthropogenic, agriculture, semi- and natural) with spatial resolution of 10 × 10 km and temporal resolution of 1 h. The spatial variability of PM10 emission depends on soil texture, land cover/land use as well as meteorological conditions. Lands covered with water or permanently wet were excluded from the model. The land covered with vegetation is treated as dust reservoir whose dust emission capacity depends on the type of vegetation and cover. The dust reservoirs are divided into reservoirs with stable and unstable surface. The changes of emission in time depend on meteorological parameters.The wind blown dust emission should be treated as a non-continuous spatio-temporal process. The emissions are estimated with high uncertainty. The estimated PM10 yearly total load emitted by wind from the European territory is highly differentiated in space and time and is equal to 0.74 Tg. The total load of PM10 emitted by wind from North African and Southwest Asian land surface located in the vicinity of European boundaries is assessed as nearly 50% (0.43 Tg) of the total load estimated for the whole Europe.The average yearly PM10 emission factor for Europe was estimated at 0.139 Mg km?2.The PM10 emission from agricultural areas is estimated at 52% of the total wind blown emission from the domain of the European Union project “Improving and applying methods for the calculation of natural and biogenic emissions and assessment of impacts to the air quality” - NatAir.PM10 emission factor for natural areas of Europe is estimated at 0.021 Mg km?2. Appropriate factors for agricultural areas and anthropogenic areas are 0.157 Mg km?2 and 0.118 Mg km?2, respectively. The latter two factors are probably underestimated due to omitting in the model of other dust emission mechanisms than aeolian erosion.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In order to evaluate the spatial variation of aerosol (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤10 μm [PM10]) and ozone (O3) concentrations and characterize the atmospheric conditions that lead to O3 and PM10-rich episodes in southern Italy during summer 2007, an intensive sampling campaign was simultaneously performed, from middle of July to the end of August, at three ground-based sites (marine, urban, and high-altitude monitoring stations) in Calabria region. A cluster analysis, based on the prevailing air mass backward trajectories, was performed, allowing to discriminate the contribution of different air masses origin and paths. Results showed that both PM10 and O3 levels reached similar high values when air masses originated from the industrialized continental Europe as well as under the influence of wildfire emissions. Among natural sources, dust intrusion and wildfire events seem to involve a marked impact on the recorded data. Typical fair weather of Mediterranean summer and persisting anticyclone system at synoptic scale were indeed favorable conditions to the arrival of heavily dust-loaded air masses over three periods of consecutive days and more than half of the observed PM10 daily exceedances have been attributed to Saharan dust events. During the identified dust outbreaks, a consistent increase in PM10 levels with a concurrent decrease in O3 values was also observed and discussed.

IMPLICATIONS In the summertime, the central-southern Mediterranean Basin is heavily affected by Saharan dust outbreaks and wildfire events. A focus on their significant influence on either oxidizing capacity of the atmosphere and air quality over Calabria, southern Italy, was here presented. Similar studies for most regions surrounding the Mediterranean Basin are needed to implement effective emission reduction measures, to prevent apparent air quality parameter exceedances and to define an appropriate health alert system. Because the frequency of these events is expected to increase due to climate change, these studies could even be a valid effort to better understand and characterize such atmospheric variations.  相似文献

Abstract

Many areas in Jordan suffer from elevated levels of coarse particulate matter (PM10). One potentially significant source of the observed PM is the resuspension of road dust in the vicinity of limestone quarries. To obtain data to assess the impact from this source, PM10 road dust resus-pension factors near Abusiiah, a town to the north east of Amman surrounded by many quarries and brick factories, were measured. Measurements included PM10 mass, particle size distributions, wind speed, and wind direction.The results showed that PM10 concentrations could be as high as 600 µg/m3, and most of the airborne PM is in the coarse fraction. Loading trucks play a major role in resus-pending road dust, with an observed PM10 emission rate of >6000 mg/km.  相似文献

Abstract

Although the fugitive dust associated with construction mud/dirt carryout can represent a substantial portion of the particulate matter (PM) emissions inventory in non-attainment areas, it has not been well characterized by direct sampling methods. In this paper, a research program is described that directly determined both PM10 and PM2.5 (particles ≤10 and 2.5 μm in classical aerodynamic diameter, respectively) emission factors for mud/dirt carryout from a major construction project located in metropolitan Kansas City, MO. The program also assessed the contribution of automotive emissions to the total PM2.5 burden and determined the baseline emissions from the test road. As part of the study, both time-integrated and continuous exposure-profiling methods were used to assess the PM emissions, including particle size and elemental composition. This research resulted in overall PM10 and PM2.5 emission factors of 6 and 0.2 g/vehicle, respectively. Although PM10 is within the range of prior U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidance, the PM2.5 emission factor is far lower than previous estimates published by EPA. In addition, based on both the particle size and chemical data obtained in the study, a major portion of the PM2.5 emissions appears to be attributable to automotive exhaust from light-duty, gasoline-powered vehicles and not to the fugitive dust associated with re-entrained mud/dirt carryout.  相似文献

This research was executed between March 2009 and March 2010 to monitor particulate matter size distribution and its composition in Istanbul. Particulate matter composition was determined using ion chromatography and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The sampling point is adjacent to a crowded road and the Bosporus Strait. Two prevailing particulate modes are found throughout PM10 by sampling with a nine-stage low-volume cascade impactor. First mode in the fine mode is found to be between 0.43 and 0.65 μm, whereas the other peak was observed between 3.3 and 4.7 μm, referring to the coarse mode. The mean PM10 concentration was determined as 41.2 μg/m3, with a standard deviation of 16.92 μg/m3. PM0.43 had the highest mean concentration value of 10.67 μg/m3, making up nearly one fourth of the total PM10 mass. For determining the effect of traffic on particulate matter (PM) composition and distribution, four different sampling cycles were applied: entire day, nighttime, rush hour, and rush hour at weekdays. SO 4 ?2 and organic carbon/elemental carbon proportions are found to be lower in night samples, representing a decrease in traffic. The long-range transports of dust storms were observed during the sampling periods. Their effects were determined analytically and their route models were run by the HYSPLIT model and validated through satellite photographs taken by the NASA Earth Observatory.  相似文献

Traffic-generated fugitive dust on gravel roads impairs visibility and deposits on the adjacent environment. Particulate matter smaller than 10 μm in diameter (PM10) is also associated with human health problems. Dust emission strength depends on the composition of granular material, road moisture, relative humidity, local climate (precipitation, wind velocity, etc.), and vehicle characteristics.The objectives of this study were to develop a reliable and rapid mobile methodology to measure dust concentrations on gravel roads, evaluate the precision and repeatability of the methodology and correspondence with the currently used visual assessment technique. Downwind horizontal diffusion was studied to evaluate the risk of exceeding the maximum allowed particulate matter concentration in ambient air near gravel roads according to European Council Directive [European Council Directive 1999/30/EC of 22 April 1999 relating to limit values for sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter and lead in ambient air. Official Journal of the European Communities. L163/41.].A TSI DustTrak Aerosol Monitor was mounted on an estate car travelling along test sections treated with various dust suppressants. Measured PM10 concentrations were compared to visual assessments performed at the same time. Airborne particles were collected in filters mounted behind the vehicle to compare the whole dust fraction with the PM10 concentration. For measuring the horizontal diffusion, DustTraks were placed at various distances downwind of a dusty road section.The mobile methodology was vehicle and speed dependent but not driver dependent with pre-specified driving behaviours. A high linear correlation between PM10 of different vehicles makes relative measurements of dust concentrations possible. The methodology gives continuous data series, mobility, and easy handling and provides fast, reliable and inexpensive measurements for estimating road conditions to make road maintenance more efficient.Good correlations between measured PM10-values, visually assessed dust generation and dust collected in filters were obtained. PM10 seems to be correlated to the whole dust fraction that impairs visibility on gravel roads.A decay in PM10 concentration as a function of distance from the road was observed. Measured particles principally did not travel further than 45 m from the road. The risk of exceeding the PM10 concentration stated in the EC-directive seems small.  相似文献

Abstract

There is a dearth of information on dust emissions from sources that are unique to the U.S. Department of Defense testing and training activities. However, accurate emissions factors are needed for these sources so that military installations can prepare accurate particulate matter (PM) emission inventories. One such source, coarse and fine PM (PM10 and PM2.5) emissions from artillery backblast testing on improved gun positions, was characterized at the Yuma Proving Ground near Yuma, AZ, in October 2005. Fugitive emissions are created by the shockwave from artillery pieces, which ejects dust from the surface on which the artillery is resting. Other contributions of PM can be attributed to the combustion of the propellants. For a 155–mm howitzer firing a range of propellant charges or zones, amounts of emitted PM10 ranged from ~19 g of PM10 per firing event for a zone 1 charge to 92 g of PM10 per firing event for a zone 5. The corresponding rates for PM2.5 were ~9 g of PM2.5 and 49 g of PM2.5 per firing. The average measured emission rates for PM10 and PM2.5 appear to scale with the zone charge value. The measurements show that the estimated annual contributions of PM10 (52.2 t) and PM2.5 (28.5 t) from artillery backblast are insignificant in the context of the 2002 U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA) PM emission inventory. Using national–level activity data for artillery fire, the most conservative estimate is that backblast would contribute the equivalent of 5 x 10–4% and 1.6 x 10–3% of the annual total PM10 and PM2.5 fugitive dust contributions, respectively, based on 2002 EPA inventory data.  相似文献

Mining of minerals exerts adverse pressure on different compartments of environment directly or indirectly. Air is the worst affected environmental matrix, and it can carry the harmful effect of pollutants generated from mining activity even to distant places. The present study was undertaken to estimate the emission of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) from different activities undertaken in stone quarrying in Mahendragarh, Haryana. The results obtained from the present study indicated that drilling, blasting, crushing, and transport of mined material are chiefly responsible for the generation of dust. Whereas drilling, blasting, and loading were responsible for emission of higher fraction of PM10, crushing and re-suspension of roadside dust from movement of vehicles resulted in generation of relatively higher fraction of finer dust (PM2.5). Modelling the transport of dust over the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory model revealed that the emitted particle may move up to the distance of about 40 km within 4 h of emission under average meteorological conditions. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis of dust confirmed the presence of calcite and gypsum, thus confirming the source as mining. The study concluded that generation of PM2.5-sized particles may impose serious respiratory health effects over the workers engaged in mining, crushing, and transportation of sandstone. Apart from it, population residing downwind of the mining area is particularly vulnerable to the pulmonary effects due to inhalation of dust.

This study provides the first comprehensive analysis of the seasonal variations and weekday/weekend differences in fine (aerodynamic diameter <2.5 μm; PM2.5) and coarse (aerodynamic diameter 2.5–10 μm; PM2.5–10) particulate matter mass concentrations, elemental constituents, and potential source origins in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Air quality samples were collected over 1 yr, from June 2011 to May 2012 at a frequency of three times per week, and analyzed. The average mass concentrations of PM2.5 (21.9 μg/m3) and PM10 (107.8 μg/m3) during the sampling period exceeded the recommended annual average levels by the World Health Organization (WHO) for PM2.5 (10 μg/m3) and PM10 (20 μg/m3), respectively. Similar to other Middle Eastern locales, PM2.5–10 is the prevailing mass component of atmospheric particulate matter at Jeddah, accounting for approximately 80% of the PM10 mass. Considerations of enrichment factors, absolute principal component analysis (APCA), concentration roses, and backward trajectories identified the following source categories for both PM2.5 and PM2.5–10: (1) soil/road dust, (2) incineration, and (3) traffic; and for PM2.5 only, (4) residual oil burning. Soil/road dust accounted for a major portion of both the PM2.5 (27%) and PM2.5–10 (77%) mass, and the largest source contributor for PM2.5 was from residual oil burning (63%). Temporal variations of PM2.5–10 and PM2.5 were observed, with the elevated concentration levels observed for mass during the spring (due to increased dust storm frequency) and on weekdays (due to increased traffic). The predominant role of windblown soil and road dust in both the PM2.5 and PM2.5–10 masses in this city may have implications regarding the toxicity of these particles versus those in the Western world where most PM health assessments have been made in the past. These results support the need for region-specific epidemiological investigations to be conducted and considered in future PM standard setting.

Implications: Temporal variations of fine and coarse PM mass, elemental constituents, and sources were examined in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for the first time. The main source of PM2.5–10 is natural windblown soil and road dust, whereas the predominant source of PM2.5 is residual oil burning, generated from the port and oil refinery located west of the air sampler, suggesting that targeted emission controls could significantly improve the air quality in the city. The compositional differences point to a need for health effect studies to be conducted in this region, so as to directly assess the applicability of the existing guidelines to the Middle East air pollution.  相似文献

A study on source apportionment of indoor dust and particulate matter (PM10) composition was conducted in a university building by using chemometrics. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential sources of selected heavy metals and ionic species in PM10 and indoor dust. PM10 samples were collected using a low-volume sampler (LVS) and indoor dust was collected using a soft brush. Inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to determine the concentration of heavy metals, while the concentration of cations and anions was determined by atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS) and ion chromatography (IC), respectively. The concentration of PM10 recorded in the building throughout the sampling period ranged from 20 ± 10 μgm?3 to 80 ± 33 μgm?3. The composition of heavy metals in PM10 and indoor dust were dominated by zinc (Zn), followed by lead (Pb), copper (Cu), and cadmium (Cd). Principle component analysis (PCA) and multiple linear regression (MLR) showed that the main sources of pollutants in PM10 came from indoor renovations (73.83%), vehicle emissions (16.38%), earth crust sources (9.68%), and other outdoor sources (0.11%). For indoor dust, the pollutant source was mainly earth crust. Management of soils to reduce the amount of PM10 emitted during agricultural tillage operations is important for attainment of air quality standards in California's San Joaquin Valley (SJV). The purpose of this study was to improve and expand upon earlier work of predicting tillage-generated dust emissions based on soil properties. We focus on gravimetric soil water content (GWC) and soil texture. A mechanical laboratory dust generator was used to test 23 soils collected for this study. Averaged results showed PM10 concentrations (mg m?3) increased logarithmically as GWC decreased below soil water potentials of ?1500 kPa. Soils with clay contents less than about 10% by weight began to emit PM10 at GWCs 1.5–4 times their GWC at ?1500 kPa. Soils with clay contents greater than about 10% began to emit PM10 at GWC values closer to ?1500 kPa. We found no correlation between maximum PM10 concentrations, measured at low GWC values, and the %sand, %silt, or %clay in a soil. However, there was a significant correlation between the %silt to %clay ratio and PM10 concentrations. This not only suggests the dependence of dust emission magnitudes on the supply of particles of PM10 size, but also the importance of clay in stabilizing aggregates and maintaining higher amounts of capillary water at lower water potentials. Based on modeled results of pooled data, PM10 concentrations increased linearly (slope = 564) for every unit increase in the %silt to %clay ratio. However, when soils were separated into groups based on clay content, the slopes for PM10 concentrations vs. %silt to %clay ratio were texture dependent. The slope for soils with <10% clay (slope = 727) was 3.3 times greater than for soils with >20% clay (slope = 221). Improved PM10 emission prediction based on soil properties should improve management decisions aimed at reducing tillage-generated PM10.  相似文献

Religious festivals (festas) in the densely populated Maltese archipelago (Central Mediterranean) are ubiquitous during summer when 86 of them are celebrated between June and October, each involving the burning of fireworks both in ground and aerial displays over a period of 3 days or longer per festival. We assessed the effect of fireworks on the air quality by comparing PM10 and its content of Al, Ba, Cu, Sr and Sb which materials are used in pyrotechnic compositions. PM10 was collected mainly from two sites, one in Malta (an urban background site) and the other in Gozo (a rural site) during July–August 2005 when 59 feasts were celebrated and September–October 2005 when only 11 feasts occurred. For both Malta and Gozo, PM10 and metal concentration levels measured as weekly means were significantly higher during July–August compared to September–October and there exist strong correlations between PM10 and total metal content. Additionally, for Malta dust, Al, Ba, Cu and Sr correlated strongly with each other and also with total concentration of all five metals. The same parameters measured in April 2006 in Malta were at levels similar to those found in the previous October. Ba and Sb in dust from the urban background site in Malta during July–August were at comparable or higher concentration than recently reported values in PM10 from a heavily-trafficked London road and this suggests that these metals are locally not dominated by sources from roadside materials such as break liner wear but more likely by particulate waste from fireworks. Our findings point to the fact that festa firework displays contribute significantly and for a prolonged period every year to airborne dust in Malta where PM10 is an intractable air quality concern. The presence in this dust of elevated levels of Ba and especially Sb, a possible carcinogen, is of concern to health.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The use of street sweepers to clean paved roads, particularly after high-wind events, has been proposed as a PM10 control method. Using an artificial tunnel, the emission rates for several street sweepers were quantified under actual operating conditions. The tunnel was a tent enclosure, 6.1 × 4.3 × 73 m, open on both ends. PM10 concentrations were measured at the inlet and outlet while a sweeper removed sand deposited along the length. Measurements were made using a specialized low-volume filter sampler and an integrating nephelometer. The volume of air passing through the tunnel was measured by releasing an inert tracer, sulfur hexafluoride, at the inlet and measuring its concentration at the outlet. A large difference in emission rates between vacuum-type sweepers was observed, with rates varying from 5 to 100 mg m-1 swept. For the cleanest sweepers, the background rates (collected by sweeping clean pavement) were about half of the total PM10 emission rate. These background emission rates likely were from diesel exhaust; background rates for the single gasoline-powered sweeper were below detection. Particle light scattering data confirmed the filter collection results. The artificial tunnel approach would be useful in measuring total emissions from other mobile and stationary sources.  相似文献
