The effect of the Coriolis force on the oil spill spreading in the gravity-viscous regime is examined. A new shallow water model for the transport and spreading of oil slick of arbitrary shape is described in which the Coriolis force is included in the momentum equations and the oil–water friction is parameterized in a frame of the boundary layer theory including the Ekman friction. The numerical Lagrangian method based on smoothed particle dynamics is described. New similarity solutions of the model equations are obtained for unidirectional and axisymmetric spreading in gravity-viscous, gravity-turbulent and gravity-viscous-rotational regimes for instantaneous as well as continuous releases. The numerical simulation extends these results for the case of continuous release in the presence of currents. It was shown that Coriolis term in the momentum equation can be omitted if slick thickness is much less of the laminar Ekman layer thickness. However, the Ekman friction should be retained for slicks of any thickness for larger times. The Ekman friction results in the essential slowdown of the spreading as well as in the deflection of the oil spreading velocity at 45° from the direction of velocity in the non-rotation case. Numerical simulations of large-scale spills showed that after the 2?days the slick area with the Coriolis effect was approximately less than half of that without rotation. Therefore, the earth rotation can be also important in the oil weathering.  相似文献

Normative variance functions can be used to accurately predict sampling exigencies, but such empirically derived formulae are continuous functions that can predict levels of sampling precision that cannot logically occur in discrete population samples. General formulae are presented that allow calculation of upper and lower boundary constraints on levels of sampling precision. These boundary constraints would only have a significant influence on sampling design where populations are so sparse that samples consist mainly of presence-absence data. A previously published empirical equation for the prediction of requisite sample number for the estimation of a freshwater benthos population correctly shows that using a small sampler can result in an up to 50-fold reduction in the amount of sediment processed, regardless of these constraints. A previously published empirical equation for the prediction of sampling variance, based on over 3000 sets of replicate samples of marine benthos populations, suggests that the use of small samplers over large ones requires the processing of between one-half and one-twentieth of the sediment for the same level of precision. It is concluded that discussions of sampling optimization should be based on knowledge of real sampling costs.  相似文献

Photosynthetic rates of aquatic plants frequently increase with increasing current velocities. This is presumably due to a reduction in the thickness of the diffusion boundary-layer which allows for a higher carbon availability on the plant surface. Blades of the seagrasses Thalassia testudinum and Cymodocea nodosa exposed to different current velocities under controlled laboratory conditions, showed increased photosynthetic rates with increasing flow only at low current velocities (expressed as blade friction velocities, u *). Carbon saturation of photosynthetic processes occurred at a relatively low u * level (0.25 cm s-1) for T. testudinum collected from a calm environment compared to C. nodosa (0.64 cm s-1) collected from a surf zone. No further enhancement of photosynthetic rates was observed at higher u * levels, suggesting limitations in carbon diffusion through the boundary layer below critical u * levels and possible limitations in carbon fixation by the enzymatic system at higher u * levels. These results, as well as those of previous theoretical studies, assumed the flow on the immediate seagrass-blade surface to be hydrodynamically smooth. The presence of epiphytes and attached debris causes the surface of in situ seagrass blades to be exposed to flows ranging from smooth to rough-turbulent. As a consequence, the boundary-layer thickness on moderately epiphytized blades under medium to high flow-conditions is not continuous, but fluctuates in time and space, enhancing carbon transport. In situ u * levels measured directly on blades of seagrasses indicate that T. testudinum and C. nodosa can be exposed to conditions under which the boundary layer limits photosynthesis during short periods of time (milliseconds) during low-energy events. As waves cause the thickness of the diffusion boundary-layer to fluctuate constantly, carbon-limiting conditions do not persist for prolonged periods.  相似文献

Annual particle sedimentation is calculated for various ocean regions using an empirical equation based on studies published prior to 1980. Organic carbon sedimentation is predicted from annual phytoplankton production and water depth. Published data show that organic carbon (as weight percent) in sedimented material decreases with depth and independent of depth increases with phytoplankton production. A matrix of values of organic carbon in settled material over depth for three levels of primary production, generally consistent with published data, is derived and used to calculate dry matter sedimentation over depth for various ocean regions. Ranges of values overlap those reported since 1980 except near continental margins. Resuspension and lateral transport of particulate matter increase sedimentation in these regions above rates predicted for the open ocean.  相似文献

This paper presents a large eddy simulation of mass transfer in the flow around a surface-mounted finite-height circular cylinder. The study was carried out for a cylinder with height-to-diameter ratio of 2.5 and a Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter of 44000. The approach flow boundary layer had a thickness of about 10% of the cylinder height. A tracer was released at various levels upstream of the cylinder. The effect of the release position in the subsequent spreading and dilution of the plumes is analyzed. It is found that a tracer released at the top or at mid-height is entrained into the recirculation zone behind the cylinder, and therefore presents similar plume evolution in the far wake in both cases. If the tracer is released at around three-quarters of the height of the cylinder, it is not significantly entrained by the main recirculation region, leading to smaller rates of spreading of the plume. Finally, if the tracer is released near the floor, the plume is entrained by the horseshoe vortex that wraps around the cylinder, leading to a large lateral spreading of the plume, remaining always near the floor.  相似文献

An experimental program was conducted to investigate vertical oil dispersion of surface oil spills under non-breaking regular waves. The variation in oil concentration caused by oil dispersion in a water column was studied to determine the vertical oil dispersion profile. The experiments were performed using different waves characteristics for different volumes of oil spill to evaluate the variation in oil concentration at three depths at two sampling stations. The correlations between oil concentration and the main parameters of wave characteristics, oil spill volume, sampling depth, and distance of sampling stations to spill location were assessed. The results revealed that the trend of variation in oil concentration versus wave steepness is linear. The results obtained from experimental measurements indicated that the oil concentrations at mid-depth were 44–77 % and the concentrations near the flume bed were 12–33 % of the concentration near the water surface.  相似文献

Laboratory studies were conducted to evaluate airborne release of diacetyl from selected mixtures simulating butter flavorings added to foods. The test materials included diacetyl (97% purity); 0.015%, 0.15%, 1.5%, and 3.0% diacetyl in a water/propylene glycol mixture; 1.5% diacetyl in deionized water or soybean oil; and 3% or 6% diacetyl in a commercial steam distillate from milk fermentation known as “butter starter distillate.” Diacetyl was quantified by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection. Expected concentration-dependent emission patterns based on liquid diacetyl content were demonstrated, but were significantly altered by mixture composition. Soybean oil and deionized water more readily released diacetyl when compared with starter distillate, propylene glycol solutions, and pure diacetyl. Measured diacetyl concentrations under static headspace and dynamic flow-chamber conditions were compared to estimated concentrations utilizing Raoult's law with published and fitted activity coefficient corrections for each mixture, indicating that published coefficients often understated the measured concentrations. It is concluded that headspace (static) and small-chamber (dynamic) measurements of airborne diacetyl provide data to assist in validating model-estimated airborne diacetyl concentrations by using mixture-specific activity coefficients. Implications of these empirical data for validating exposure estimates for diacetyl based on near-field/far-field modeling in workplace settings are discussed.  相似文献

There are different approaches to estimating the transverse dispersion coefficient in river mixing. Theoretical approaches have derived the dispersion coefficient from the concept of shear flow, which has dominant effects on the transverse mixing. Empirical approaches have developed an equation using the hydraulic and geometric data of rivers through dimensional analysis and regression techniques. These two equations interact closely with each other. For example, the complicated theoretical equation can be simplified by empirical approaches, and the functional relationships of the empirical equation can be derived from theoretical bases. In this study, a new empirical equation for the transverse dispersion coefficient has been developed based on the theoretical background in river bends. As a regression method, the least-square iterative method was used because the equation was a nonlinear model. The estimated dispersion coefficients derived by the new equation were compared with observed transverse dispersion coefficients acquired from natural rivers and coefficients calculated by the other existing empirical equations. From a comparison of the existing transverse dispersion equations and the proposed equation, it appears that the behavior of the existing formula in a relative sense is very much dependent on the flow condition and the river geometry. Moreover, the proposed equation does not vary widely according to variation of flow conditions. Also, it was revealed that the equation proposed in this study becomes an asymptotic curve as the curvature effect increases.  相似文献

Despite growing interest in species' range shifts, little is known about the ecological and evolutionary factors that control geographic range boundaries. We investigated the processes that maintain the northern range limit of the mud fiddler crab (Uca pugnax) at North Scituate, Massachusetts, USA (42 degrees 14' N), located approximately 60 km north of Cape Cod. Larvae from five populations in Massachusetts were reared under controlled temperatures to test whether cooler water near the edge of this species' range inhibits planktonic development. Few larvae completed development at temperatures < 18 degrees C, a threshold that larvae would regularly encounter north of Cape Cod. Extensive salt marshes are present north of the current range boundary, and a transplant experiment using field enclosures confirmed that benthic fiddler crabs can survive severe winter conditions in this northern habitat. Taken with oceanographic data, these results suggest that the range boundary of fiddler crabs is likely maintained by the influence of cooler water temperatures on the larval phase. Analyses of mitochondrial DNA sequences from a neutral marker (COI) indicate high gene flow among U. pugnax populations in Massachusetts with little differentiation across Cape Cod. Consistent with predictions regarding the homogenizing influence of gene flow, larvae from source populations north and south of Cape Cod shared a common lower threshold for development. However, larvae produced near the range edge had faster growth rates than those from the south side of Cape Cod (typically reaching the final megalopal stage 1.0-5.5 d faster at 18 degrees C). Additional studies are needed to determine the mechanism underlying this counter-gradient variation in development time. We hypothesize that dispersal into cooler water on the north side of Cape Cod may act as a selection filter that sieves out slow developers from the larval pool by increasing planktonic duration and exposure to associated sources of mortality. Thus while high gene flow may prevent the evolution of greater cold tolerance in northern populations, recurrent selection on existing variation may lead to an unexpected concentration of favorable adaptations at the edge of the range. Such a pattern could permit edge populations to play a dominant and unrecognized role in future range extensions.  相似文献

The application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), particularly Large Eddy Simulation, for the modelling of buoyant turbulent plumes, has been demonstrated to be very accurate, but computationally expensive. Here a more basic, and therefore more generally practicable, approach is presented. Commercial CFD software is used to model such plumes using Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) turbulence models. A careful comparison is made between the numerical predictions and well-established results regarding the bulk properties of plumes. During this process, we are able to observe the well-known approximate Gaussian nature of the plume and achieve quantitative agreement with empirical plume spread coefficients. The use of numerical modelling allows for the investigation of the flow field and turbulence in those regions of the plume of most interest—the plume edge and near source regions. A comprehensive sensitivity study is conducted to identify the limits of applicability of this modelling approach. It is shown that the standard modelling approach of Morton, Taylor and Turner, which introduced the well-known entrainment assumption, pertains in a region well above the source region. At the plume edge, the levels of turbulence are contrasted with the value of the entrainment parameter. Finally, the effects of forcing the plumes with additional momentum at the source are considered, including the case of a pure jet. We show how these forced plumes eventually lose their momentum excess and tend to the behaviour of a pure, buoyant plume.  相似文献

The atmospheric boundary layer adjustment at the abrupt transition from a canopy (forest) to a flat surface (land or water) is investigated in a wind tunnel experiment. Detailed measurements examining the effect of canopy turbulence on flow separation, reduced surface shear stress and wake recovery are compared to data for the classical case of a solid backward-facing step. Results provide new insights into the interpretation for flux estimation by eddy-covariance and flux gradient methods and for the assessment of surface boundary conditions in turbulence models of the atmospheric boundary layer in complex landscapes and over water bodies affected by canopy wakes. The wind tunnel results indicate that the wake of a forest canopy strongly affects surface momentum flux within a distance of 35–100 times the step or canopy height, and mean turbulence quantities require distances of at least 100 times the canopy height to adjust to the new surface. The near-surface mixing length in the wake exhibits characteristic length scales of canopy flows at the canopy edge, of the flow separation in the near wake and adjusts to surface layer scaling in the far wake. Components of the momentum budget are examined individually to determine the impact of the canopy wake. The results demonstrate why a constant flux layer does not form until far downwind in the wake. An empirical model for surface shear stress distribution from a forest canopy to a clearing or lake is proposed.  相似文献

Reproductive power is a contentious concept among ecologists, and the model has been criticized on theoretical and empirical grounds. Despite these criticisms, the model has successfully predicted the modal (optimal) size in three large taxonomic groups and the shape of the body size distribution in two of these groups. We tested the reproductive power model on snakes, a group that differs markedly in physiology, foraging ecology, and body shape from the endothermic groups upon which the model was derived. Using detailed field data from the published literature, snake-specific constants associated with reproductive power were determined using allometric relationships of energy invested annually in egg production and population productivity. The resultant model accurately predicted the mode and left side of the size distribution for snakes but failed to predict the right side of that distribution. If the model correctly describes what is possible in snakes, observed size diversity is limited, especially in the largest size classes.  相似文献

Here we propose a theoretical model to compute the suspended grain-size distribution in fluvial environment. We derive the model based on the Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes equation and the continuity equation of sediment phase. The model includes the effects of secondary current and stratification which are the cause of complex interaction between turbulence and grain-size distribution in the sediment-laden flow. Due to an immense importance of particle–particle and particle-turbulence interactions near the channel bed, we include their impacts in the boundary condition of the model. The present model has noteworthy contribution to demonstrate the phenomena of suspended grain-size distribution in the real world. Reported experimental data in literature shows well agreement with the numerical solution computed from the suggested model. The better computational accuracy of the present model is ascertained when the upper bound of calculated error between observed experimental data and computed values is found to be lowest for our model in comparison to a large number of existing models developed from different mathematical viewpoints.  相似文献

The Effect of Edge on Avian Nest Success: How Strong Is the Evidence?   总被引:16,自引:0,他引:16
Wildlife biologists historically considered the edge between adjacent habitat types highly productive and beneficial to wildlife. A current dogma is that edges adversely affect a wide range of avian species by increasing depredation and parasitism rates of nests. I critically evaluated existing empirical evidence to test whether there was a gradation in nest success as a function of distance from an edge. Researchers investigating this question have been inconsistent in their experimental designs, making generalizations about edge-effect patterns difficult. The majority of studies I examined found nest success varied near edges, with both depredation rates (10 of 14 artificial nest studies, and 4 of 7 natural nest studies) and parasitism rates (3 of 5 studies) increasing near edges. In addition, there was apositive relationship between nest success and patch size (8 of 8 studies). The most conclusive studies suggest that edge effects usually occur within 50 m of an edge, whereas studies proposing that increased depredation rates extend farther than 50 m from an edge are less convincing. Prior research has probably focused on distances too far from an edge to detect threshold values, and future research should emphasize smaller scales. 100–200 m from an edge at 20–25 m increments. Researchers often use relatively arbitrary habitat characteristics to define an edge. Therefore, I propose that only openings in the forest canopy with a diameter three times or more the height of the adjacent trees should be included in edge analyses. This review suggests that fragmentation of eastern North American temperate forests could lead to increased nest predation and parasitism, and there is need to determine if similar processes occur in other forested regions of North America.  相似文献

In a recent paper published in this journal, Jeon et al. ((2007), Environ Fluid Mech 7(4): 317–329) have presented a new empirical equation for the transverse dispersion coefficient in natural streams that was developed based on the hydraulic and geometric parameters using a regression technique. A total of 32 data sets collected in 32 streams was used. Among them, 16 data sets were used for deriving the new equation, and the other 16 were used for verifying the equation. Starting from dimensional analysis the authors found that transverse dispersion coefficient depends on three parameters, such as sinuosity, aspect ratio and a friction term. The robust least square method was applied to estimate regression coefficients resulting in an equation which allows better prediction of transverse dispersion coefficient than previous literature equations. The discussers would like to highlight some points raised in the paper.  相似文献

Subgrid-scale (SGS) modeling is a long-standing problem and a critical component in the large-eddy simulation (LES) of atmospheric boundary layer. A variety of SGS models with different levels of sophistication have been proposed for different needs, such as Smagorinsky's (1963) eddy viscosity model, Mason and Thomson's (1992) stochastic backscattering model, and Sullivan et al.'s (1994) near surface model. A modified Smagorinsky SGS model has been used in the LES version of Terminal Area Simulation System (TASS-LES). It has successfully simulated the buoyancy-dominated, convective atmospheric boundary layer flows, while simulations of the shear-dominated, slightly unstable, neutral, and stably stratified boundary layer flows are not so good. For the later, we used a simpler version of Sullivan et al.'s subgrid-scale model in which turbulent kinetic energy equation is not included and the model is still the first-order closure. A momentum profile matching approach is adopted in the proposed model. A series of simulations for shear-dominated, slightly unstable and neutral boundary layers are performed using different subgrid-scale models and different grid resolutions. The results are compared with those of Sullivan et al. (1994) and with empirical similarity relations for the surface layer. The simulations with the new SGS model appear to be far more satisfactory than those with the modified Smagorinsky model.  相似文献

Theoretical study of invasion dynamics has suggested that spatial heterogeneity should strongly influence the rate and extent of spreading organisms. However, empirical support for this prediction is scant, and the importance of understanding heterogeneity for real-world systems has remained ambiguous. This study quantified the influence of host and environmental heterogeneity on the dynamics of a 19-year disease invasion by the exotic and fatal pathogen, Phytophthora lateralis, within a stream population of its host tree, Port Orford cedar (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana). Using dendrochronology, we reconstructed the invasion history along a 1350-m length of infected stream, which serves as the only route of pathogen dispersal. Contrary to theoretical predictions, the temporal progression of the disease invasion was not related to a host's downstream spatial position, but instead was determined by two sources of heterogeneity: host size and proximity to the stream channel. These sources of heterogeneity influenced both the epidemic and endemic dynamics of this pathogen invasion. This analysis provides empirical support for the influence of heterogeneity on the invasion dynamics of a commercially important forest pathogen and highlights the need to incorporate such natural variability into both invasion theory and methods aimed at controlling future spread.  相似文献

Fishing the line near marine reserves in single and multispecies fisheries.   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Throughout the world "fishing the line" is a frequent harvesting tactic in communities where no-take marine reserves are designated. This practice of concentrating fishing effort at the boundary of a marine reserve is predicated upon the principle of spillover, the net export of stock from the marine reserve to the surrounding unprotected waters. We explore the consequences and optimality of fishing the line using a spatially explicit theoretical model. We show that fishing the line: (1) is part of the optimal effort distribution near no-take marine reserves with mobile species regardless of the cooperation level among harvesters; (2) has a significant impact on the spatial patterns of catch per unit effort (CPUE) and fish density both within and outside of the reserve; and (3) can enhance total population size and catch simultaneously under a limited set of conditions for overexploited populations. Additionally, we explore the consequences of basing the spatial distribution of fishing effort for a multispecies fishery upon the optimality of the most mobile species that exhibits the greatest spillover. Our results show that the intensity of effort allocated to fishing the line should instead be based upon more intermediate rates of mobility within the targeted community. We conclude with a comparison between model predictions and empirical findings from a density gradient study of two important game fish in the vicinity of a no-take marine-life refuge on Santa Catalina Island, California (USA). These results reveal the need for empirical studies to account for harvester behavior and suggest that the implications of spatial discontinuities such as fishing the line should be incorporated into marine-reserve design.  相似文献

When a line transect overlaps the boundary of the sampled region, it can be reflected back on top of itself into the region, thereby making it possible to include elements near the edge twice from the same transect. A practical advantage of doing so is the reduction of field time and effort compared to the customary procedure of folding the transect back into another part of the region. An estimator is presented which accounts for this procedure in a way that preserves design-unbiased estimation.  相似文献

Flow disturbances near tall forest edges are receiving significant attention in diverse disciplines including ecology, forest management, meteorology, and fluid mechanics. Current theories suggest that near a forest edge, when the flow originates from a forest into a large clearing, the flow retains its forest canopy turbulence structure at the exit point. Here, we propose that this framework is not sufficiently general for dense forested edges and suggest that the flow shares several attributes with backward-facing step (BFS) flow. Similar analogies, such as rotor-like circulations, have been proposed by a number of investigators, though the consequences of such circulations on the primary terms in the mean momentum balance at the forest clearing edge have rarely been studied in the field. Using an array of three triaxial sonic anemometers positioned to measure horizontal and vertical gradients of the velocity statistics near a forest edge, we show that the flow structure is more consistent with an intermittent recirculation pattern, rather than a continuous rotor, whose genesis resembles the BFS flow. We also show that the lateral velocity variance, v'2, is the moment that adjusts most slowly with downwind distance as the flow exits from the forest into the clearing. Surprisingly, the longitudinal and vertical velocity variances (u'2 and w'2) at the forest edge were comparable in magnitude to their respective values at the center of a large grass-covered forest clearing, suggesting rapid adjustment at the edge. Discussions on how the forest edge modifies the spectra and co-spectra of momentum fluxes, effective mixing length, and static pressure are also presented.  相似文献
