Larvae of two Baetis species were used to investigate spatial and temporal variability in the bioavailabilities of cadmium, copper, lead, zinc and iron in the river Biala Przemsza and its tributaries draining an area of lead and zinc mining in Upper Silesia, Poland. Accumulated metal concentrations were measured in April, May, August and November 2000. Both species indicated significant local geographical variability in availabilities of zinc, iron, lead and cadmium, but not copper. Accumulated concentrations of lead, zinc and cadmium confirmed the high general contamination of the Biala Przemsza system by these three trace metals. Larvae showed little seasonal variation in concentrations of cadmium, copper, lead and iron. Accumulated zinc concentrations were low in Baetis rhodani in August, perhaps as a result of insufficient time for high concentrations to accumulate since hatching of the larvae. Samples collected in August most nearly matched criteria of the greatest availability of larvae for collection and their size homogeneity, minimising the possibilities of any effect of differential larval size and/or age on accumulated metal concentrations. Mayfly larvae are members of a suite of potential stream biomonitors in Central Europe, which together can provide information on the different sources of bioavailable trace metals present in aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

The effects of ten generational zinc or cadmium pre-exposure on metal tolerance among beet armyworm Spodoptera exigua individuals were compared. These effects were assessed in animals from the 11th generation, reared on a diet either uncontaminated or contaminated with metal (cadmium or zinc). The survival rate of larvae and the degree of metal accumulation (in larvae, pupae and moths; among larval organs: gut and fat body) were analysed. Catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione transferase activity in larval organs of individuals subjected to different metal treatments were also measured. Animals transferred from control rearing to metals (cadmium or zinc) in the 11th generation, as well as those from multigenerational zinc treatment, but not from multigenerational cadmium treatment, had a significantly lower survival rate than control animals. Insects from the groups with the high metal treatment had high bioaccumulation factors (above 3.7 and 2.3 following cadmium and zinc, respectively). Cadmium (but not zinc) pre-exposure had a significant effect on metal accumulation in larvae. Multigenerational metal pre-exposure seemed to have mainly a negative effect on glutathione transferase activity in the gut of larvae from the 11th generation, in the case of the individuals exposed to metal other than that used in pre-exposure treatment or kept in control conditions. However, in the case of zinc pre-exposure, such effect was only apparent when zinc was replaced by cadmium. The long-term effect of cadmium on catalase activity in larvae was found.  相似文献

The responses of oribatid communities to heavy metal contamination were studied. Concentration of cadmium, copper and zinc in nine oribatid species along a gradient of heavy metal pollution was measured. Oribatid mites were sampled seasonally during two years in five forests located at different distances from the zinc smelter in the Olkusz District, southern Poland. The most numerous and diverse oribatid communities were found in the forest with moderate concentrations of heavy metals. Analysis by atomic absorption spectrophotometry revealed large differences in metal body burdens among species. All studied oribatid species appeared to be accumulators of copper with Oppiella nova, Nothrus silvestris and Adoristes ovatus characterized by the highest bioaccumulation factors. Most species poorly accumulate cadmium and zinc. The accumulation of heavy metals in the body of oribatids was not strictly determined by their body size or the trophic level at which they operate.  相似文献

Cadmium, lead, zinc, Chromium, copper, nickel and manganese in sediments and in aquatic organisms were collected from the aquaculture pond ecosystem of the Pearl River Delta (PRD), China and analyzed to evaluate bioaccumulation and trophic transfer in food chains, as well as the potential health risk of exposure to the Hong Kong residents via dietary intake of these aquatic products. The results revealed that based on the biota–sediment accumulation factor, omnivorous fish and zooplankton accumulated more trace metals from sediment than carnivorous fish. Concentrations of seven trace metals in aquaculture pond of PRD significantly decreased with increasing trophic levels, showing that these trace metals were trophically diluted in predatory and omnivorous food chains. The hazard index values of all fish species were smaller than 1 for adults and children, indicating there was no health risk from the multiple metals via ingestion of the freshwater fish for the inhabitants.  相似文献

Despite the influence that amphibians have on the flow of energy and nutrients in ecological systems, the role that amphibians play in transporting contaminants through food webs has received very little attention. This study was undertaken to investigate bioaccumulation of trace elements in amphibians relative to other small aquatic organisms in a contaminated wetland. We collected bullfrog larvae (Rana catesbeiana) along with three other species of small vertebrates and four species of invertebrates from a site contaminated with a wide array of trace elements and analyzed them for trace element concentrations and stable nitrogen and carbon isotope composition. We found that amphibian larvae accumulated the highest concentrations of most trace elements, possibly due to their feeding ecology. These results suggest that omnivorous amphibian larvae can serve as a critical link for trace element trophic transfer. Their propensity to accumulate trace elements may have important implications for amphibian health in contaminated environments and should be further investigated.  相似文献

This study investigates the transfer of Cd and Zn from a soil amended with sewage sludge at rates up to 100 t ha(-1) through a multi-trophic system consisting of barley, the aphid Sitobion avenae and the larvae of the lacewing Chrysoperla carnae. Results show marked differences in the transfer of the two metals. Cadmium was freely accumulated in barley roots, but accumulation in the shoot was restricted to a concentration of around 0.22 mg kg(-1) (dry weight). This limited the transfer of Cd to higher trophic levels and resulted in no significant accumulation of Cd in S. avenae or in C. carnae. Zinc transfer in the system was largely unrestricted, resulting in significant accumulation in roots and shoots, in S. avenae and in C. carnae. Cadmium biomagnification occurred in lacewing pupae, with concentrations up to 3.6 times greater than in aphids. S. avenae biomagnified Zn by a factor of ca. 2.5 at low sludge amendment rates, but biomagnification decreased to a factor of 1.4 at the highest amendment rate. Biomagnification of Zn did not occur in C. carnae, but concentrations were up to 3.5 time higher than in soil. Results are discussed in light of the mechanisms regulating transfer of the two metals in the system.  相似文献

Fish, Noemacheilus barbatulus (stone loach), of different body weights were used to study rates of uptake and loss of cadmium during and after dietary exposure. Fish were kept singly in a continuous-flow system, and fed tubificid worms. The worms had a range of cadmium levels, but all levels were below that needed to cause acute lethal toxicity in the fish. Body weight affected both the maintenance ration and the amount of food consumed ad libitum, but the exponent for body weight (0.78+/-0.04), relating body weight to food consumption, was unaffected by either temperature or the size of feeding ration. The cadmium content of the worms did not affect the size of the maintenance ration. Metal burden in fish changed rapidly both during and after exposure. After exposure, the cadmium burden of starved fish usually declined more rapidly than in fed fish. A 58-fold increase in cadmium content in the food produced a 28% increase of body burden in the fish, and there was no evidence for biomagnification. Maintenance ration and ration ad libitum and rates of uptake and loss of cadmium increased with temperature within the range 8-18 degrees C, but exposure to cadmium at 16 degrees C yielded a higher asymptotic body burden than either 8 degrees C or 18 degrees C. Rate constants for loss of cadmium after exposure appear to be lower than for loss during exposure. Rates of uptake and loss of cadmium vary with metabolic rate. A maximum in the rate of oxygen consumption was measured at 16 degrees C, above which the rate dropped, presumably due to stress. The exponent for body weight was unaffected by activity or temperature. Body weight of fish appeared to affect both the rates of uptake and loss of cadmium, and feeding rations and respiration to the same extent: body weight exponents were not dissimilar.  相似文献

Mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), iron (Fe) manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) concentrations in the liver, kidney and muscle of nine killer whales (including three calves) that stranded together in the northern area of Japan were determined. The Hg and Cd concentrations were found at trace levels in the calf organs, and increased with age. The Fe concentration in the muscle was significantly lower in the calves than in the mature whales and also increased with age. In contrast, Mn and Cu concentrations in the muscle were significantly higher in the calves than in the mature whales, and changes in the Zn concentration relative to age were unclear. These results suggest minimal mother-to-calf transfer of the toxic metals Hg and Cd and accumulation of these metals in the organs with age, while the essential metals Mn and Cu were found at higher concentrations in the muscle of calves than in mature whales.  相似文献

Accumulated body concentrations of cadmium, copper and zinc were investigated in 19 species of intertidal invertebrates (the barnacles Tetraclita squamosa, Capitulum mitella, Balanus amphitrite, Megabalanus volcano, the bivalves Saccostrea cucullata, Septifer virgatus and Brachidontes atratus, the chiton Acanthopleura japonica and the gastropods Cellana grata, Cellana toreuma, Patelloida saccharina, Patelloida pygmaea, Siphonaria japonica, Tegula argyrostoma, Lunella coronata, Monodonta labio, Nerita albicilla, Thais clavigera and Thais luteostoma) collected from a relatively unpolluted area in Hong Kong, i.e. two shores within the Cape d'Aguilar Marine Reserve. In general body metal concentrations could be explained by the accumulation strategy of the analysed organism and by physiological requirements for the essential metals, i.e. copper and zinc. Zinc concentrations were, therefore, greatest in the barnacles and the oyster S. cucullata. Copper concentrations were greatest in those gastropods containing the respiratory pigment haemocyanin and in S. cucullata. One species collected from the sheltered shore, i.e. T. luteostoma, had much higher copper body concentrations compared with exposed shore conspecifics and this may be attributed to a diet that was dominated by oysters, which have high copper body concentrations. In contrast to both copper and zinc, cadmium body concentrations showed little interspecific variation.  相似文献

Groups of zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) and asiatic clams (Corbicula fluminea) were exposed to cadmium and zinc with the aim of studying the effect of these metals on the 57Co, 110Ag and 134Cs uptake and depuration by these freshwater bivalves. In the presence of zinc, the 57Co concentration factor for the whole organism of the two species was halved, notably because of a decrease of the uptake parameter. Conversely, Zinc and the Cd + Zn mixture increased the 110mAg uptake process by clams and mussels. The two metals also increased the depuration of this radionuclide in mussels, whereas this phenomenon was only observed in clams exposed to cadmium. In comparison with 57Co and 110mAg, the 134Cs bioconcentration was 5-10 times lower in D. polymorpha and not detected in C. fluminea. This weak contamination by this radionuclide resulted from a lower uptake and a higher depuration parameters.  相似文献

In this study we evaluated the differences between concentrations of copper, iron, zinc, manganese, lead and cadmium in three terrestrial gastropods: Helix pomatia, Helix aspersa and Arion rufus, collected in a semi-rural location in Northern Italy. Metal concentrations in the foot and in the digestive gland were measured. In the hepatopancreas, copper and zinc did not differ significantly in the three species; the levels of copper were also similar in the foot. In comparison to Helix sps., A. rufus demonstrated lower concentrations of manganese and cadmium in the hepatopancreas and higher concentrations in the foot. In the slug the mucus produced in the foot could represent an efficient elimination mechanism of some elements. We also investigated correlations between the trace element content in the soft tissues and the mollusk size (weight of the body and height of the shell).  相似文献

Trace metals were examined in the muscle tissue of flatfish species of flounder, Platichthys flesus (Linnaeus, 1758), sediments from two southern Baltic Sea sites (Gdańsk Bay and Ustecko-?ebskie as a reference) and in two areas of the Portuguese Atlantic coast (Douro River estuary and Atlantic fishing ground as a reference) to evaluate spatial differences in trace metals. Additionally, the accumulation of trace metals in flounder of different length classes was assessed. Flounder from the Gdańsk Bay area contained twofold more cupper (Cu), lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) than did flounder from the Douro River estuary, but zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) were at similar concentrations. The sediments from Gdańsk Bay contained significantly more Zn and threefold more Cd, while concentrations of Cu and Pb were twofold lower. The concentrations of metals in the sediments did not correlate with those in the flounder. Spatial differences were noted in metal concentrations in flounder from the southern Baltic Sea and the Portuguese Atlantic coast as well as within these regions, with higher concentrations in the flounder from the Baltic Sea Gdańsk Bay. The flounder in length class 25–30 cm from Gdańsk Bay contained metal concentrations comparable to those of class 40–45 cm specimens from the Atlantic coast. The accumulation of metals in flounder length classes differed in the two regions.  相似文献

The concentrations of lead, zinc, copper and cadmium accumulated by 12 emergent-rooted wetland plant species including different populations of Leersia hexandra, Juncus effusus and Equisetum ramosisti were investigated in field conditions of China. The results showed that metal accumulation by wetland plants differed among species, populations and tissues. Populations grown in substrata with elevated metals contained significantly higher metals in plants. Metals accumulated by wetland plants were mostly distributed in root tissues, suggesting that an exclusion strategy for metal tolerance widely exists in them. That some species/populations could accumulate relatively high metal concentrations (far above the toxic concentration to plants) in their shoots indicates that internal detoxification metal tolerance mechanism(s) are also included. The factors affecting metal accumulation by wetland plants include metal concentrations, pH, and nutrient status in substrata. Mostly concentrations of Pb and Cu in both aboveground and underground tissues of the plants were significantly positively related to their total and/or DTPA-extractable fractions in substrata while negatively to soil N and P, respectively. The potential use of these wetland plants in phytoremediation is also discussed.  相似文献

An artificial diet was prepared that enabled the snail Helix aspersa to be fed food containing varying amounts of metals, antibiotics or bacteria. By this means it is possible to show that the body burden of zinc was significantly correlated with the dietary intake. The snail was, however, able to detect high concentrations of the metal and reduced its intake of such contaminated food. The bacterial population of the alimentary tract modified the amount of zinc absorbed from the diet. It appears, therefore, that biological monitoring programmes, based upon bioaccumulation measurements, should take these influences into account.  相似文献

Metal concentrations in seabirds of the New Zealand region   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Concentrations of the heavy metals cadmium, copper, lead, zinc, mercury and, in some individuals, methyl mercury were determined in a range of tissues of 64 tropical, subtropical, subantarctic and antarctic seabird taxa mostly from the New Zealand region. Although apparently natural, levels of cadmium and mercury in some species greatly exceed those known to have toxic effects in some terrestrial birds. Copper and zinc levels exhibited less inter-species variation than the non-essential metals cadmium and mercury. Cadmium concentrations were highest in kidney tissues but uniformly low in feathers. Total mercury concentrations showed most inter-species variation. Mean methyl mercury levels in liver tissues of several large procellariiforms represented less than 5% of the corresponding mean total mercury level. Lead concentrations were generally low or below the limits of detection, but elevated levels were measured in some coastal or scavenging species. In a significant number of species, mean concentrations of liver cadmium and mercury and kidney cadmium were greater in adults than in young birds. The reverse was true for copper. Mean zinc levels in liver did not differ between adults and young. High levels of cadmium in some species seem likely to be due to diet, whereas high levels of mercury probably reflect more closely the moult intervals which constrain the ability of birds to eliminate methyl mercury.  相似文献

Cadmium, like many other pollutants, is nondegradable and can be accumulated by Lymantria dispar at a level that affects fitness components, physiology, and development, which could indicate presence of environment pollution by heavy metals. The cadmium effect on fitness-related traits in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth instar of L. dispar L. was determined. Furthermore, activities of the following antioxidative defense components after the larvae had been fed on the artificial cadmium-supplemented diet (50 μg Cd/g dry food) were assessed: superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APOX), total glutathione amount (GSH), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), glutathione reductase (GR), and the amount of free sulfhydryl (SH) groups. Statistically significant delay of development in the fourth, fifth, and sixth instar and decrease of the larval mass in the third and fourth instar were estimated after the exposure to cadmium through food in comparison to the control. There were no changes in SOD activity of cadmium-treated larvae. Significantly lower CAT, APOX, and GR activities were recorded in the third, fifth, and in the third instar, respectively. At the same time, higher activity was recorded in the sixth instar, while GST activity was higher in the third. GSH content was significantly lower during all instars after treatment but the amount of SH groups was higher in older larvae. The strategy of antioxidative defense and the adjustment or modulation of fitness-related traits in presence of cadmium was dependent on the age of larvae in L. dispar, which might be used in early metal risk assessment in Lepidoptera and other insects.  相似文献

In order to achieve efficient phytoextraction of heavy metals using trees, the metal allocation to aboveground tissues needs to be characterised. In his study, the distribution of heavy metals, macro- and micronutrients and the metal micro-localisation as a function of the leaf position and heavy metal treatment were analysed in poplars grown on soil with mixed metal contamination. Zinc was the most abundant contaminant in both soil and foliage and, together with cadmium, was preferentially accumulated in older foliage whereas excess copper and lead were not translocated. Changes in other element concentrations indicated an acceleration in aging as a consequence of the metal treatment. Excess zinc was irregularly accumulated inside leaf tissues, tended to saturate the veins and was more frequently stored in cell symplast than apoplast. Storage compartments including metabolically safe and sensitive subcellular sites resulted in sizable metal accumulation as well as stress reactions.  相似文献

Zinc-copper interaction affecting plant growth on a metal-contaminated soil   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
In order to assess the effects of metal interactions on plant growth, a greenhouse experiment was conducted, in which spring barley was grown for 48 days in a soil to which cadmium, copper, lead and zinc were added singly and in combination. Plant growth was measured as shoot and root dry matter production. At the end of the experiment the plant material was analysed for metal uptake and the soil was extracted with CaCl(2) solution, to measure the plant-available metal content. The most consistent effect on plant growth was an interaction between copper and zinc, which was also important in determining uptake of these metals and the amounts extractable with CaCl(2) solution. An analysis of the underlying mechanism led to the conclusion that the growth of barley was controlled principally by the amount of plant-available zinc, which depended on the amounts of both added zinc and added copper. The effect of the added copper was to increase the toxicity of the added zinc.  相似文献

Levels of seven heavy metal residues, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury and zinc were monitored in samples of various species of finfish harvested from the Maryland section of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries over a two year period (1978-79). Results of the analysis of the edible portions of these finfish are presented along with the species of finfish, date and location of harvest. A number of samples of finfish gonad and liver tissue were analyzed to study the relative level of preconcentration of heavy metals in these tissues compared to the edible (flesh) portion. Results of this study are consistent with other available data for Atlantic Coast finfish. Gonad tissue, when compared to flesh, show enrichment of copper and zinc and decreased mercury and cadmium levels. Liver tissue shows enrichment in copper, zinc and cadmium and generally lower levels of mercury compared to flesh.  相似文献
