The view is expressed that the assessment of disposal of nuclear waste in the ocean (specifically the Arctic and Kara Seas) is critical to understanding Arctic pollution. Much needs to be done in deciding what we should do, even though many wastes are long-standing and persistent. in 1993, disclosures about Russian dumping of submarine nuclear reactors, nuclear fuel, and other radioactive wastes into the Arctic Ocean brought this region and its problems into the world spotlight and raised public concerns about the resulting health and environmental risks. As a result of this concern, the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment published a 1995 study, Nuclear Wastes in the Arctic (US Congress Office of Technology Assessment, 1995). The objective of this study is to determine the sedimentation rate and dispersion area of calcium carbonate residue dumped at sea and the impact to marine environment of dumping by a laboratory simulation experiment; chemical tracking in the field with the help of acoustic and optical tracking; and a comparative study of baseline conditions and marine environmental impact after dumping. Turbidity, pH and phosphate are selected as the chemical tracers to be monitored.

Results show that in the dumping area of 15 square miles with water depth of 50 m, if 217 t calcium carbonate residue is dumped (spot dumping) in the presence of a pycnocline with a current velocity of 60 cm/s (close to the maximum) the maximum dispersion distance of the calcium carbonate residue plume front is less than 2100 m; the dispersion area is less than 0.56 km2; and the maximum dispersion time is about 60 min when the turbidity and pH in the whole dispersion area return to background level. Therefore, the ocean disposal of calcium carbonate residue is feasible.  相似文献

During the "International Arctic Ocean Expedition 1991" (20 August-21 September 1991) mesozooplankton was sampled at six stations in the Nansen, Amundsen and Makarov Basins of the central Arctic Ocean from 1,500 m depth to the surface by multiple opening/closing net hauls. Total mesozooplankton abundance decreased from 268 ind. m-3 in the surface layer (0-50 m) to <25 ind. m-3 below 200 m depth. The small copepods Oithona similis and Microcalanus pygmaeus, as well as copepod nauplii, were most abundant close to the surface, while Oncaea borealis and Spinocalanus spp. frequently occurred at greater depth. Mesozooplankton dry mass (DM) integrated over the upper 1,500 m of the water column was surprisingly stable throughout the investigation area and measured 2.0ǂ.3 g DM m-2. Dry mass in the upper 50 m measured 20.9 mg m-3 and was dominated by Calanus hyperboreus (57.4%) and C. glacialis (21.1%). C. finmarchicus was very abundant only in the Nansen Basin. Below 200 m the calanoid copepods Metridia longa, Microcalanus pygmaeus and Pareuchaeta spp., the decapod Hymenodora glacialis and chaetognaths of the genus Eukrohnia were the principal contributors to biomass values of <1 mg DM m-3. Hence, vertical changes in abundance, biomass and species composition were much more pronounced than regional differences between the basins. Three different mesozooplankton communities were differentiated according to their faunistic composition and are discussed in context with the major water masses: Polar Surface Water, Atlantic Layer and Arctic Deep Water.  相似文献

通过对上海市不同土地利用方式下绿地土壤中重金属Cu、Zn、Pb和Cr的调查研究,发现工业区和交通区绿地土壤中Cu、Zn、Pb、Cr的平均含量均显著高于大学、公园及居民区。与上海市土壤环境背景值相比,不同土地利用方式中4种重金属均存在一定富积。就单项污染指数而言,Cu、Pb和Cr的污染程度大小依次为工业区>交通区>大学≈公园≈居民区,而Zn为交通区>工业区>大学≈公园≈居民区;就内梅罗综合污染指数而言,工业区和交通区污染较严重,分别有54.17%和67.9%的土壤达重度污染;而公园、大学及居民区绝大部分土壤为轻度污染,分别为73.1%、100%和60%。  相似文献

La reorganización de una gran cantidad de organismos marinos en los Sultimos 5 siglos se debe a actividades humanus, especialmente a desplazamientos globales de organismos asociados con embarcaciones marinus y con productos pesqueros comerciales La mayoría de encuestas biológicas posfechan dichos eventos de transportación, y por consecuencia se intetpreta la distribución de muchas de estas especies, hoy cosmopolitas, como resultado de pcesos naturales, subestimando el rol humano en la alteración de la diversidad natural y en la distribución de organismos marinos en los márgenes costeros del mundo.
Se ilustran percepciones sobre el estado natural de algunos sistemas versus su reciente alteración ecológica en el "NATIONAL ESTUARINE RESERVE RESEARCH SYSTEM," dentro del cual muchos santuarios "naturales" han sido fuertemente alterados por especies exóticas Debido a la falta de comunicación entre los cientificos que trabajan con diferentes grupos de organismos, habitats y regiones, es drficil reconocer la escala y tasa de las invasiones recientes en los océanos, causados por actividades humanas. Evidencias disponibles sugíeren que las introducciones continúan en gran escala en todo el mundo.
A pesar que desde 1973 se han establecido numerosas convenciones internacionales con el motivo de controlar el desplazamiento de otganismos exóticos marinos, un control adecuado sólo ocurre en los niveles locales y regionales.  相似文献

西南地区农村生活垃圾特征与群众环保意识   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
随机选择我国西南地区22个自然村,通过问卷调查、现场采样和实验室测试等方法,对当地农村生活垃圾的污染和处理现状,垃圾特征,群众对生活垃圾的认知、支付意愿和影响因素进行调研。结果表明,我国西南地区农村人均生活垃圾产生量为178 g·d-1,主要组分为厨余、灰土、橡胶和纸类。垃圾容重、含水率、灰分、可燃物和热值分别为107 kg·m-3、37.04%、25.73%、37.23%和8 008 k J·kg-1。该地区生活垃圾具有惰性物质含量低、容重低,可回收物比例和热值高的特征。群众对生活垃圾的污染性认知主要来源于直观感受,对可回收生活垃圾的认知直接受当地废品回收商的影响,对有毒有害垃圾的认知不足。年龄、受教育程度和家庭年收入对认知水平有一定的影响,对群众支付意愿无明显影响。群众的支付意愿与垃圾收费呈指数衰减关系,以每户每月不超过5元为宜。在西南地区农村实施生活垃圾处理收费制度已具有一定的基础。  相似文献

A build-up of reserve lipid, predominantly wax esters, occurred during the summer in the copepod Calanus hyperboreas, collected off an Arctic ice-island. This lipid storage was correlated with a phytoplankton bloom and was followed by a progressive decrease of lipid from 2.1 mg per individual in September to 0.4 mg in June. There was a rapid decrease in lipid utilization between October and December, followed by much slower decreases until June. Lowered respiration rates or the availability of different types or quantities of food in the winter and spring are possible explantions for the slower rate of lipid use. Laboratory starvation experiments for up to 90 days correlated with results from the field. Gas-liquid chromatographic studies of the lipids showed that both the alcohols and fatty acids of the wax esters were highly variable with season and depth, whereas the phospholipid fatty acids were not affected by changes in these parameters. Only summer samples bad wax esters with a phytoplankton-like fatty acid composition, and upper water winter copepods had wax esters with little polyunsaturation. The deep-water winter copepods had a very different wax-ester composition from the upper water samples, with a predominance of hexadecanol (all other copepod samples had 20:1 and 22:11 as the principal alcohols) and a high content of polyunsaturated acids. Deep-water C. hyperboreas may differ in food habits and life history from those in the upper water community.  相似文献

运用ICP仪对南京市15种主要绿化树木的叶片吸收吸附铅、锌的能力进行了研究。结果表明:15种树木叶片对铅、锌具有一定的吸收净化能力,并依污染物和树种的不同差异明显。在被研究的15个树种中,对铅吸收量较高的树种是雪松和圆柏,对锌吸收量较高的树种是杨树。对铅吸附能力强的树种是雪松,对锌吸附能力强的树种是海桐。叶片吸收和吸附铅的能力强的树种是雪松,叶片吸收和吸附锌的能力强的树种是杨树。最后,通过综合分析得出,杨树和雪松叶片中重金属铅和锌的累积量,可作为铅锌污染监测和评价的重要依据。  相似文献

European floodplain soils are frequently contaminated with potentially toxic inorganic substances. We used a multi-surface model to estimate the aqueous concentrations of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in three Mollic Fluvisols from the Central Elbe River (Germany). The model considered complexation in solution and interactions with soil organic matter (SOM), a clay mineral and hydrous Al, Fe and Mn oxides. The amounts of reactive metals were derived from extraction with 0.43 M HNO3. Modelling was carried out as a function of pH (soil pH ± 1.4) because it varies in floodplain soils owing to redox processes that consume or release protons. The fraction of reactive metals, which were dissolved according to the modelling, was predominantly <1%. Depending on soil properties, especially pH and contents of SOM and minerals of the clay fraction, the modelled concentrations partially exceeded the trigger values for the soil–groundwater pathway of the German soil legislation. This differentiation by soil properties was given for Ni, Pb and Zn. On the other hand, Cd was more mobile, i.e., the trigger values were mostly exceeded. Copper represented the opposite, as the modelling did not predict exceeding the trigger values in any horizon. Except for Pb and partially Zn (where oxides were more important), SOM was the most important adsorbent for metals. However, given the special composition and dynamics of SOM in mollic horizons, we suggest further quantitative and qualitative investigations on SOM and on its interaction with metals to improve the prediction of contaminant dynamics.  相似文献

以褐土(Cinnamonsoil)、潮棕壤(Aquicbrownsoil)和酸性棕壤(Acidbrownsoil)为供试土壤,通过培养实验,研究了土壤中重金属Zn、Pb对赤子爱胜蚓(Eiseniafoetida)生长率的影响,赤子爱胜蚓(Eiseniafoetida)对不同土壤中有效态Zn、Pb含量的影响,并与野生环境中生长的灰暗异唇蚓(Allolobaphoracaliginosa)进行比较。结果表明:重金属的污染明显抑制了赤子爱胜蚓的生长;赤子爱胜蚓可以显著提高潮棕壤中DTPA-Pb的含量,对DTPA-Zn的含量影响不大;加赤子爱胜蚓,褐土中DTPA-Zn和Pb的含量显著高于加灰暗异唇蚓,潮棕壤中DTPA-Zn的含量和酸性棕壤中大DTPA-Pb的含量则相反。  相似文献

When sightings of seabirds in the Indian Ocean are analyzed in conjunction with oceanographic data, the distributions of certain species and higher taxa show significant correlation with the temperature and salinity of the surface waters. Closely related species occur preferentially over different types of surface water. Characteristic associations of species were also found corresponding to surface water-types. Seabirds are not exempted by their mobility from the constraints of the marine environment.  相似文献

Natural resources are important assets for sustainability of rural livelihoods and economic development. The objectives of the study were to assess linkage of environmental change to emerging water scarcity, livelihoods insecurity and decline in wildlife biodiversity and hydropower generation in the Great Ruaha ecosystem, and to discuss policy lessons for sustainable development. Literature survey, participatory assessments, collection of records from stakeholders, participatory observations and a questionnaire survey were used. Participatory assessment found that increasing water scarcity is associated with degradation of land, vegetation cover and change in rainfall intensity and duration. Rainfall change is supported by 83% of respondents and rainfall trends analysis. About 42% of variation in cereal production is described by the rainfall amount variability. Analysis of trends for per capita cereals production from district records showed a significant (p < 0.05) decline over the years. Changes in water flows in the Great Ruaha River have been evident since 1993, and have affected wildlife diversity in the Ruaha National Park and power generation from the Kidatu hydroelectric plant downstream. Human livelihood activities, exclusiveness, weak coordination and collaboration between sectors and institutions in policy formulation and implementation have played a role. The pro-poor policy formulation through integrated planning, strong coordination and collaboration is recommended for sustainable development.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to appraise the levels of heavy metal contamination (Zn and Pb) in sediment of the Langat River (Selangor, Malaysia). Samples were collected randomly from 15 sampling stations located along the Langat River. The parameters measured were pH, redox potential, salinity, electrical conductivity, loss of ignition, cation exchanges capacity (Na, Mg, Ca, K), and metal ions (Zn and Pb). The geo-accumulation index (I geo) and contamination factor (C f) were applied to determine and classify the magnitude of heavy metal pollution in this urban river sediment. Results revealed that the I geo of Pb indicated unpolluted to moderately polluted sediment at most of the sampling stations, whereas Zn was considered to be within background concentration. The I geo results were refined by the C f values, which showed Pb with very high C f at 12 stations. Zinc, on the other hand, had low to moderate C f values. These findings indicated that the sediment of the Langat River is severely polluted with Pb. The Zn concentration at most sampling points was well below most sediment quality guidelines. However, 40% of the sampling points were found to have a Pb concentration higher than the consensus-based probable effect concentration of 128 mg/kg (concentrations above this value are likely to cause harmful effects). This result not only highlights the severity of Pb pollution in the sediment of the Langat River, but also the potential risk it poses to the environment.  相似文献

Measurements of the concentrations of the naturally-occurring radioactive nuclides 210Po and 210Pb in a large number of pelagic organisms from the Atlantic Ocean made in the spring/summer of 1984 and 1985 are reported. Marine shrimp are particularly well represented, and in many cases data were obtained for shrimp hepatopancreas, stomach-contents, and posterior intestine plus contents, as well as for whole individuals. The wide ranges found in 210Po concentrations group into categories: the shrimp, for example, divide into four categories, two penaeid and two carid. These groupings are explained on the basis of variations in diet between the different categories. A clear difference was also observed between the 210Po levels in shrimp of similar species and size from opposite sides of an oceanographic front; this difference too can be explained plausibly in terms of a change in certain penaeid shrimp, and attention is drawn to the need for investigation of cytological and/or genetic effects which could possibly be caused by the very high natural radiation doses to which such organisms are exposed.  相似文献

High-resolution satellite locations were obtained from striped marlin using Argos transmitters attached to the upper lobe of the caudal fin. Twenty-six striped marlin were tagged off New Zealand (2005–2007) and tracked as far as the central Pacific Ocean. Caudal fin mounted Argos tags generated 1,524 locations during a total of 659 tracking days [mean 25 (±21.24) days per fish and 2.3 (±2.30) locations per day]. 38% of locations have an estimated accuracy of ±1 km or better. Displacement rates from high quality locations ranged from 2.9 to 170.8 km in a 24 h period, with a mode at 20–30 km and a mean of 45 km/day. The caudal fin attachment methodology and antenna configuration was adjusted each season to improve transmission life and data quality, with the best results obtained in the last year of deployments (2007). The longest track duration was 102 days, with a total displacement of 4,959 km and a total track distance from all locations received of 6,850 km. Tag shedding and antenna failure appear to have limited the duration of tracks from SPOT tags. The high temporal and spatial resolution data revealed behaviours not previously observed in striped marlin, including associations to subsurface bathymetric features. High resolution location data such as these are useful inputs for statistical models used to investigate habitat selection and switching between different behavioural modes. The geolocations calculated using ukfsst estimates from PAT tag data had RMS errors of 1.01° latitude and 0.59° longitude when compared with SPOT tag Argos locations.  相似文献

This paper explores the implications of a form of nonconvexity in individual preferences over the public good “cleanliness.” The implications of this nonconvexity on equilibrium outcomes, welfare analysis, the process of development, and optimal government policy are examined. The nonconvexity can imply a role for government in providing a commitment to a clean environment even if the government has a cost disadvantage in cleaning compared with individuals. By providing a credible commitment to a clean environment the government can induce private individuals to undertake optimal levels of cleaning on their own.  相似文献
