Laboratory experiments were undertaken to examine fertilization success in the intertidal prosobranch limpets Patella ulyssiponensis and Patella vulgata. Alkalization of eggs (10 min in pH 9.0 sea water) prior to fertilization trials improved fertilization rates greatly. Fertilization success was found to be a function of sperm concentration, gamete age and contact time. Sperm concentration needed for optimum fertilization success in vivo ranged between 105 and 107 sperm ml−1 for both species although at higher concentrations the number of normally developing trochophore larvae decreased. For P. vulgata, sperm longevity (at a concentration of 106 sperm ml−1) did not exceed 6 h, whereas eggs of both species were fertilizable for up to 12 h. Maximum fertilization success occurred after 15–30 min gamete contact time. The Vogel et al. (Math Biosci 58:189–216, 1982) fertilization kinetics model is developed to allow for non-complete fertilizations under optimal sperm concentrations, and a new parameter fitting technique is developed to improve estimates of fertilization success for short gamete contact times.  相似文献

The timing of gamete release by fucoid algae, although known to be restricted to calm days is not clearly understood within a circadian time scale. The need for externally fertilizing species to avoid gamete dilution suggests that in wave-exposed areas spawning may occur during particular tidal phases. However, this may differ between mating systems, as selfing species may be less affected by gamete dilution. In this study, two different approaches were used to determine when egg release occurs during the tidal cycle in two sister species with different mating systems. First, egg settlement of Fucus vesiculosus (dioecious) and Fucus spiralis (selfing hermaphrodite) was quantified on removable substrates (egg settlement disks) every day for 2 months and settlement patterns were used to statistically estimate the radius of a circle that would encompass 99% of each patch of settled eggs (the egg dispersal radius). Also, egg release was quantified every 2 h during the tidal cycle. A significantly larger egg dispersal radius (P < 0.02) was found for F. spiralis than F. vesiculosus, and this difference was somewhat site dependent with a greater difference between species in exposed sites. The egg dispersal radius was negatively correlated with significant wave height and positively correlated with sea surface temperature for both the species (P < 0.05), with a greater effect of both the factors for F. spiralis than for F. vesiculosus. Egg release during the tidal cycle was variable between species and experiments, with F. vesiculosus releasing more eggs, later in the day, and at a lower tide, than F. spiralis, which released fewer eggs, throughout the day and at all tides. The dioecious species, F. vesiculosus, may have developed a specific adaptation for timing the egg release to periods when emersed in exposed habitats to avoid rapid dilution of gametes that require outcrossing for fertilization. On the other hand, egg release for F. spiralis, which can self-fertilize, occurred both when emersed and immersed, suggesting this species has developed less synchrony with specific environmental factors. Site dependence also suggests local wave conditions can modulate timing of release. The data are consistent with the relaxation of the selective constraints of water motion on fertilization success in a selfing hermaphrodite, relative to an obligate outcrossing species. Results support the idea that species with different mating systems evolve different sensitivities to environmental cues for gamete release with specific implications for inbreeding and successful external fertilization in the ocean.  相似文献

Montastraea annularis, M. faveolata, and M.␣franksi are three recently separated species that together dominate reefs of the tropical western Atlantic. Despite morphological, life-history, ecological and genetic differences, the legitimacy of their status as separate species has been questioned. This controversy stems from both the scarcity of unambiguous, diagnostic differences among them, and from the possibility of extensive hybridization associated with their approximately synchronous reproduction in sympatry. Here we report on fertilization trials and the timing of spawning, both of which suggest that the potential for hybridization may be limited. Crosses between M. faveolata (the most genetically distinctive taxon) and the other two species were largely unsuccessful, as were selfed matings for all three species. M. annularis and M. franksi showed no evidence of fertilization barriers, but the timing of spawning typically differed between them by 1 to 2 h. We also found that spawning times in the field of M. annularis and M. faveolata were non-overlapping in 1995, and that the timing of spawning in M. annularis could be experimentally shifted forward by simulating earlier than natural sunsets. These findings from Panamá and Honduras, particularly given their consistency with comparable observations and experiments elsewhere, provide evidence of reproductive isolation and support the separate species status of these three taxa. Some hybridization may occur under natural conditions at these sites, particularly between M. annularis and M.␣franksi. Rampant genetic interchange among these taxa in Central America seems unlikely, however, in the light of the concordant associations between morphology, reproductive biology and other characters which are observed. We examined the inheritance of theMytilus edulis CaM-1 Intron 3 locus, a non-coding DNA locus with two potentially neutral length-variants. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to determine theCaM-1 genotype for 799 larvae obtained from 11 laboratory crosses. Larvae were typed singly only 8 to 24 h after fertilization. We find evidence that each allele can be inherited from either sex, that there are no barriers to fertilization between gametes of different genotypes, and that most larvae have genotypes compatible with Mendelian inheritance of the locus. Deviations from expected genotype frequencies were found in some crosses; we suggest that a contributing factor is aneuploidy in early larvae, but a major cause is more likely to be selection at a locus linked toCaM-1, occurring under the artificial laboratory culture conditions. This study demonstrates the feasibility of applying molecular genetic techniques to early larval stages of marine bivalves, and presents a new non-destructive biopsy method for DNA analysis from living adult mussels.  相似文献

Anthelia glauca Lamarck, 1816 is a gonochoric, external-brooding soft coral found in KwaZulu-Natal. It is reproductively active in the summer months. The development of gametes produced in late summer is arrested in winter. Several stages of gametes are found at the base of the polyps, and female polyps produce several cycles of larvae over an extended breeding period of 4 to 5 months. Larvae are brooded in a unique pharyngeal brooding pouch not yet described in other coral species. The brood pouch consists of an expansion of the pharynx with constrictions proximal and distal to the embryos and larvae. Our data suggest that egg transfer and fertilization occur at full moon and the mature larvae are released after new moon. Zooxanthellae are absent in A. glauca oocytes, but zooxanthella infestation commences at the immature larval stage. Received: 15 July 1997 / Accepted: 12 March 1998  相似文献

Early development was examined, under various salinities, for two sympatric nereidid polychaetes, Hediste japonica and H. diadroma, which participated in a simultaneous reproductive swarming in an estuary of the Omuta-gawa River in Ariake Sea, Japan. The eggs of both species were isotonic to the medium of 27.5–30 psu salinity. The egg diameter in the isotonic salinity was 180–205 μm in H. japonica, and 130–160 μm in H. diadroma. Successful development of most embryos was observed in a salinity range of 22.5–30 psu in both species, while successful fertilization occurred in wider ranges of salinity, i.e., 10–34 psu in H. japonica and 10 to 30 psu in H. diadroma. In both species, free-swimming larval life started from the indistinct hatching of trochophores out of a jelly layer capsule. The lecithotrophic development appeared to run to the 4-setiger nectochaetes in H. japonica, while to 3-setiger nectochaetes in H. diadroma, resulting in a shorter pelagic larval life in H. japonica. In a comparison of larval morphology among Hediste species, we found a definite negative correlation between the prostomium width, which represents the larval size and depends on egg size, and relative length of chaetae to the prostomium width: the relative length of chaetae was the longest in H. diadroma (with the smallest egg size and long pelagic life), intermediate in H. japonica (intermediate egg size, short pelagic life), and the shortest in H. atoka (largest egg size, no true pelagic life). We also examined the possibility of hybridization between H. japonica and H. diadroma through cross-insemination experiments. The gametes of the two species were reciprocally compatible, and viable hybrid offspring were produced by the laboratory crosses. The hybrid larvae expressed intermediate phenotypes, but with a greater maternal influence in characteristics such as the relative length of chaetae and the lecithotrophic larval duration.  相似文献

In contrast to the seasonal gamete and planula production of Acropora (Isopora) palifera on Heron Island reef (Lat. 23° S), populations on Lizard Island reef (Lat. 14° S), sampled in 1979, 1981 and 1983, and Salamaua and Busama reefs (Lat. 7° S), sampled from 1980 to 1983, planulated year-round. Intensive sampling of colonies at Salamaua and Busama showed that gametes ripened at two-month intervals and that up to six cycles of gametes and larvae could be produced by an individual colony. Gametes of only a portion of the population — usually close to 50% — ripened each month. The Salamaua population, on average, produced fewer and smaller planulae than the Heron Island population during each two-monthly reproductive cycle. Hypotheses correlating the annual periodicity of breeding in marine animals with latitudinal variation of temperature were tested. In general, the time of breeding in A. palifera at Heron Island reef is much more restricted than theories based on latitudinal variations of water temperature would predict. It is hypothesized that, in the near subtropical environment of Heron Island reef, this species has evolved a life-history strategy that limits the amount of energy allocated to reproduction and allocates more energy to growth.  相似文献

The reproductive activity of 88 colonies of Pocillopora damicornis at Rottnest Island, Western Australia, was examined over 12 mo (20 August 1988 to 20 August 1989). Larvae were found close to the three new moons of February, March and April, 1989, but in large numbers only during March; 67% of all corals produced larvae. There was no obvious connection between gametogenesis and the production of brooded larvae; however, those corals which did not produce, larvae also did not produce ova but did produce, sperm, and must be considered male colonies. All colonies which produced ova went on to produce planulae. Spermatogenesis occurred throughout the year, but oogenesis occurred between September 1988 and April 1989. Dramatic declines in the percentage of polyps containing eggs and sperm occurred in early February and early April 1989. On these dates the amount of lipid in the tissue of the corals decreased, which suggests that the decline in the percentage of polyps with sperm and eggs was not due to the gametes being resorbed by the polyps. Therefore, P. damicornis at Rottnest Island appears to be both a brooder and a broadcaster with asexual reproduction through brooded larvae and sexual reproduction through spawning of gametes. This accounts for earlier evidence in the literature that some input from sexual reproduction had been occurring in the populations of P. damicornis at Rottnest Island. There is no direct evidence for spawning, as broadcasting of gametes has not been observed, but the indirect evidence provides a strong argument for the existence of this dual reproduction.  相似文献

Cape hakes, Merluccius paradoxus and M. capensis, are important gadoid fish that are commercially harvested in the Benguela Current system off Namibia and South Africa. The aim of this study was to elucidate the nutritional condition and feeding preferences of their larvae. Hake eggs and larvae were sampled in austral spring of two consecutive years, 2007 and 2008, off the west coast of South Africa. They were identified to species using genetics, and total lipid content and fatty acid (FA) composition were analysed for each individual egg and larva to compare the condition of different early life stages of both hake species. Higher abundances of M. paradoxus eggs and larvae were consistently found compared to M. capensis. In both species, eggs contained wax esters (WE) and had significantly higher lipid content per dry mass than larvae. Lipid content as well as FA composition changed with the developmental stage of larvae. Quantities of essential fatty acid (EFA) increased with feeding of larvae due to dietary lipid incorporation. In 2007, yolk-sac larvae contained significantly lower total lipids than in 2008. It is argued that this was due to reduced lipid transfer by the spawning females to the eggs. These findings indicate that maternal effects are important in determining condition of hake larvae and that this may have an effect on their survival and subsequent recruitment.  相似文献

Genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) are remarkably polymorphic. Several selection mechanisms have been invoked to account for this diversity, including disassortative mating preferences. In addition, eggs may discriminate between sperm based on MHC. To investigate the effects of MHC-genotype on fertilization success, we obtained mature gametes from ripe Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) males and females captured on spawning grounds. The eggs of each female were divided into two batches, and by letting each of 2 males fertilize 1 of the batches, we obtained a total of 36 half-sibling batch-pairs. The semen was diluted to ensure that the two males in each half-sibling batch-pair contributed with the same number of sperm cells. We found that MHC-heterozygous males had significantly higher fertilization success than MHC-homozygous males and neither initial spermatocrit, sperm motility nor swimming velocity co-varied with difference in fertilization success. There was no effect of female genotype or female-male MHC-similarity on fertilization success. However, one MHC-allele was associated with increased fertilization success. It seems plausible that the difference in fertilization success between homo- and heterozygous males may be due to MHC-dependent sperm selection by the ovum.Communicated by M. Abrahams  相似文献

It is speculated that differences in coral bleaching susceptibility may be influenced by the genotype of in hospite Symbiodinium and their differential responses to bleaching stressors. Photoinhibition of photosystem II (PSII), damage to the D1 (psbA) PSII reaction centre protein and production of reactive oxygen species by in hospite Symbiodinium are likely precursors of coral bleaching. In order to assess whether photorepair rates of in hospite Symbiodinium underlie the bleaching susceptibility of their hosts, photoinhibition (net and gross), photoprotection and photorepair rates were assessed in a bleaching-‘tolerant’ coral (P. astreoides) and a bleaching-‘sensitive’ coral (M. faveolata) using non-invasive fluorometric techniques and by blocking de novo synthesis of psbA. Previous studies using such techniques have demonstrated that in vitro Symbiodinium types ‘sensitive’ to bleaching stressors had reduced rates of photorepair relative to ‘tolerant’ Symbiodinum types. Our measurements demonstrated that Symbiodinium in the more bleaching tolerant P. astreoides had higher photorepair rates than Symbiodinium in M. faveolata. Higher repair rates in P. astreoides resulted in lower net photoinhibition relative to M. faveolata, where both corals exhibited similar susceptibility to photodamage (gross photoinhibition). Photoprotective mechanisms were observed in both corals; M. faveolata exhibited higher antennae-bed quenching than P. astreoides at low-light intensities, but at and above light-saturating intensities, which are different for each coral species, P. astreoides displayed more efficient non-photochemical quenching (Stern–Volmer quenching) of chlorophyll fluorescence than M. faveolata. Increased NPQ by P. astreoides at E/E k ≥ 1 was not driven by antennae-bed quenching. The ability of in hospite Symbiodinium in P. astreoides to mitigate the effects of photoinhibition under high light conditions compared with Symbiodinium in M. faveolata, and their high repair capacity following photoinhibition, may be a key factor to consider in future bleaching studies and may underlie the relative bleaching tolerance of P. astreoides compared to M. faveolata.  相似文献

A Northumberland (England) population of Melinna cristata was studied from October, 1967 to February, 1970. M. cristata is a gregarious sedentary polychaete which lives in muddy substrates. It is dioecious, and has a very restricted breeding season. The gametes are shed solely by the two pairs of posterior nephridia, which undergo morphological changes just before the breeding season; this allows them to accommodate the mature gametes. After spawning, these nephridia ternal and, within 2 to 3 weeks of spawning, the benthic larvae metamorphose into juveniles. The juveniles grow from 3 to 10 mm during their first year, and can be distinguished from the rest of the population by their size and the complete absence of coelomic gametes. After about 12 months, the juveniles release their first batch of gametes into the coelom from the germinal epithelium, and they then cannot be distinguished from the rest of the population. The development of coelomic gametes takes 7 to 10 months to complete, so M. cristata is potentially capable of breeding for the first time when 2 years old. The majority of worms survive spawning, and M. cristata probably breeds annually for several years. In this population, not all potential breeders spawn, some resorb their mature gametes and release another batch of gametes into the coelom. The Northumberland population of M. cristata is near the southernmost limit of the species distribution, which suggests that environmental conditions for this population are not optimum. The population appears to maintain itself by producing fewer oocytes and by only part of the population spawning.  相似文献

Mass release of gametes of the sponge Neofibularia nolitangere (Duch. & Mich., 1864) occurs simultaneosly along the leeward coast of Curaçao over a period of three subsequent days, without any apparent spatial pattern in the sperad of activity. A population of 99 individual sponges was monitored from August through November 1984 for development and subsequent release of gametes. Release started every day of 3 3-d period (12 to 14 October) at about 1400 hrs and lasted until just after sunset (1830 hrs). Ninety percent of the population showed reproductive activity. Exactly one lunar month later (11 to 12 November), a second release of gametes occurred. In the following year the same sequence of events was observed for the original population (2 to 4 October and 1 to 2 November, 1985). In all instances the first gamete release began on the third day after the full moon. These and earlier observations on this phenomenon show a strong correlation between moon phase and the time of gamete release. Histological and field observations show separate development and release of gametes (sex-ratio males: females 1.5:1) with external fertilization. No sex-reversal occurred in the population during release activity the following year, demonstrating a clear gonochoristic and oviparous type of reproduction for N. nolitangere. First development of oocytes and spermatocytes has been observed at 36 and 7 d, respectively, before the date of first release. In both males and females, a major part of the mesohyl of the total sponge was involved in gamete development. Spermatozoa are released through the osculum as a dense white smoke; eggs consisting of oocyte-nurse cell globules, reinforced with spicules, are separately released en masse with the outgoing water stream of the female sponge. Shortly after release the eggs become sticky and show a negative buoyancy. The reproductive strategy of N. nolitangere appears to be directed at maximizing the number of surviving recruits by maintaining a high reproductive output at a short specific time interval.  相似文献

The current contribution deals with the reproductive biology of a genus endemic to Brazil –Mussismilia Ortmann, 1890 – including all three species of the genus: M. braziliensis (Verrill, 1868), M. hartti (Verrill, 1868), and M. hispida (Verrill, 1902), which occur sympatrically in the studied area, the Abrolhos Reef Complex, Brazil. Sexuality patterns, modes of reproduction, synchrony and spawning periods are reported, and were determined by histological examination of material. All three species started to develop female and male gametes over different periods in the same breeding season. The three species are probably broadcast spawners, since no embryos or planulae were observed in any species at any given time of the year. Each reproductive cycle lasted approximately 11 months. Oogenesis and spermatogenesis started in different periods, with spermaries appearing in approximately the eighth month of ovary development and lasting about 3 months. Reproductive cycles were annual. Spawning probably occurred in consecutive months in each species. In M. braziliensis, spawning presumably happened between March and the middle of May in 1996 and 1997. Evidence suggested that spawning events of M. hispida took place between the end of April and mid-June. M. hartti may have spawned between September and November. The data presented here suggested that all studied species have at least one exclusive spawning period, asynchronically with the others. A possible exception may be the simultaneous (or close) spawnings of M. braziliensis and M. hispida in May. It is suggested that asynchrony in spawning periods among species may reduce the chance of hybridization, gamete waste and the competition for settlement surfaces. The occurrence of extended spawning periods for each species may also reduce the risks of reproductive failure, due to temporary adverse conditions. Multispecies assemblages of the coral genus Acropora occur commonly throughout the Indo-Pacific Ocean. Nine species from such an assemblage comprising 41 species of Acropora, at Big Broadhurst Reef on the Great Barrier Reef, were studied during 1981–1983. Similarities and differences in reproductive modes and timing, oocyte dimensions and fecundity, recruitment by larvae and by fragments, and mortality were recorded. All species had an annual gametogenic cycle, were simultaneous hermaphrodites, and had the same arrangement of gonads in polyps. In six species, most colonies released gametes on the same night of the year, in early summer, during a mass spawning event involving many coral genera. A seventh species had colonies spawning at this as well as other times of the year. Another species spawned in late summer, and gametes were not observed to mature in the last species. Eggs were very large (601 to 728 m geometric mean diameter) and fecundity of polyps low, compared with other corals; no reduction in oocyte numbers occurred during oogenesis. Reef-flat species had slightly bigger and fewer eggs than reef-slope species. All species recruited by larvae, but four also multiplied by fragmentation, either year-round or during occasional rough weather. Yearround fragmenters had few larval recruits; non-fragmenters had many, and a rough-weather fragmenter had an intermediate number of larval recruits. It was concluded that larval recruitment largely determined species composition, and that reduced larval recruitment was responsible for sparse distribution of fragmenting species. Subsequent mortality in some species and increase by fragmentation in others probably determined relative abundances.  相似文献

The amount of food and when it is available affect both the timing of reproduction and the number of gametes produced by purple sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus purpuratus. To investigate this further, the effects of food availability on feeding rates, gonad growth, and gamete development were examined in S. purpuratus collected from the Point Loma kelp forest near San Diego, California, USA (32.69° N, 117.26° W) in September (Fall) 2007, and February (Spring) and July (Summer) 2008, using laboratory mesocosms. Each seasonal laboratory feeding experiment lasted 3 months, and different levels of food availability were established with different feeding frequencies (from 1 to 7 days week−1). Gonad tissues of male and female urchins were staged at the end of each experiment using histological analyses. Reduced food availability resulted in increased daily consumption rates, especially in the Fall when gamete development began. Food limitation at this time resulted in failure to produce viable gametes, suggesting there is a critical period early in gonad development when food limitation affects reproductive competency. Food limitation later in gonad development did not stop viable gamete production, although it did reduce gamete output.  相似文献

The mussels Mytilus edulis L. and M. trossulus Gould are found sympatrically in most areas of Newfoundland, with a low frequency of hybrids. To assess the potential for reproductive isolation, we sampled mussels from three sites in an eastern Newfoundland Bay from May–October 1996 to determine if there were differences in the reproductive cycles of the two species and their natural hybrids. In mussels with sheil lengths of 38–42 mm, males and females with mature gametes were dominant in June for M. edulis and hybrids, while M. trossulus showed a lower frequency of individuals with mature gametes. M. trossulus and hybrids spawned over a prolonged period (from late spring to early autumn) compared with most M. edulis individuals that spawned over a period of 2–3 weeks in July. This asynchrony in spawning activity between the two species may partially explain the low frequency of hybrids found in previous studies of these mussel populations. Female and male hybrids between M. edulis and M. trossulus showed normal gonad development, ripening and spawning, providing an opportunity for the introgression of genes between the two species. M. trossulus had a higher reproductive output than M. edulis of similar shell length, while hybrids showed intermediate values of reproductive output. M. trossulus females produced smaller eggs than either M. edulis or hybrids. Differences in reproductive traits may partially explain the maintenance of the mussel hybrid zone in Newfoundland. This study compared the synergistic effects of elevated pCO2 and temperature on the early life history stages of two ecologically and economically important oysters: the Sydney rock oyster, Saccostrea glomerata and the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas. Gametes, embryos, larvae and spat were exposed to four pCO2 (375, 600, 750, 1,000 μatm) and four temperature (18, 22, 26, 30°C) levels. At elevated pCO2 and suboptimal temperatures, there was a reduction in the fertilization success of gametes, a reduction in the development of embryos and size of larvae and spat and an increase in abnormal morphology of larvae. These effects varied between species and fertilization treatments with S. glomerata having greater sensitivity than C. gigas. In the absence of adaptation, C. gigas may become the more dominant species along the south-eastern coast of Australia, recruiting into estuaries currently dominated by the native S. glomerata.  相似文献

The mating patterns of four species of hermaphroditic scleractinian coral were investigated in November 1984 at Orpheus Island on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Each of the species shed eggs and sperm into the water, with subsequent external development of larvae. Studies of gamete viability indicated that cross-fertilizations were possible until at least 6 h after spawning.Montipora digitata cross-fertilized exclusively,Acropora tenuis, Goniastrea aspera andG. favulus were capable of self-fertilization, but to varying extents. Blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate Heterocapsa circularisquama cause massive bivalve kills in Japan. Mariculture of the Japanese pearl oyster, Pinctada fucata martensii, is the industry most affected by these blooms, especially in Ago Bay, Mie Prefecture, where they are frequent, cause mass mortality of oysters, and overlap with their spawning season. The goal of this August 2009 study was to assess the effects of a toxic strain of H. circularisquama isolated from Ago Bay on gametes, fertilization, and embryo development of pearl oysters. Spermatozoa, eggs, spermatozoa and eggs, and fertilized eggs of pearl oysters from Ago Bay were exposed to H. circularisquama at cell densities reported during the bloom (10–104 cells mL?1) for different periods of time. The concentration of H. circularisquama, exposure duration, and their interactions all had significant effects on gamete quality, fertilization, and embryo development. The motility and swimming velocity of spermatozoa, egg viability, fertilization, and embryo development rate were significantly reduced in all concentrations, with a cell density of 10 cells mL?1 determined to be the critical density of H. circularisquama for deleterious effects. This is the first evidence of inimical effects of an HAB species on bivalve spermatozoa upon direct exposure.
