The reproductive status of the holothuroid species Isostichopus badionotus (Selenka, 1867) and Holothuria mexicana (Ludwig, 1875) was studied over 16 months in Bocas del Toro (Panama), from November 1999 to February 2001. Sexual reproduction was evaluated by the gonad index method, and by histology of gonad development. In addition, population structure was assessed based on sex ratio, minimum reproductive size, and length and weight distributions of males and females. The sex ratio in both species was 1:1, with a unimodal population distribution composed mainly of mature individuals. The minimum reproductive length and weight were 13-20 cm and 150 g, respectively, for both species, although reproductive individuals 10 cm in length were also found. A consistently higher gonad index was observed in H. mexicana, due to a high proportion of mature females and males and high gonad indices in most monthly samples. Gametogenesis and spawning patterns seemed to occur throughout the year, with periods of enhanced activity. Two periods of maximum reproductive activity were tentatively identified: July-November for I. badionotus and February-July for H. mexicana, but neither species had a single, sharply defined annual spawning event. Further work on these exploited holothuroids should examine the relationships between reproduction and environmental factors and between reproductive status and recruitment.  相似文献

The reproductive cycles of the serpulid polychaetes Pomatoceros lamarckii (Quatrefages, 1865, as Vermilia) and P. triqueter (Linnaeus, 1767, as Serpula triquetra) were studied by histological examination during 1999 and 2000 at Bantry Bay, south-west Ireland. Gametogenesis, sex ratios and hermaphroditism were also investigated. The male/female ratio in P. lamarckii was approximately equal, but in P. triqueter it deviated significantly in favour of females. There was no significant variation in the sex ratios throughout the year in either species. Results confirm that the species are protandric hermaphrodites. In P. lamarckii, but not in P. triqueter, sexual dimorphism was exhibited in body size, the females being larger than the males of the same species. In both species, the proportion of females increased with increasing body size. Simultaneous hermaphroditism was recorded in P. lamarckii, but not in P. triqueter. There was no clearly defined annual gametogenic cycle in either species. Both species appear to have an extended reproductive season, with numerous small-scale peaks in reproductive maturity that can vary annually. Spawning was broadly synchronous between sexes. Visual observation alone (i.e. without histology) was insufficient to accurately assess reproductive condition in individuals not in, or close to, a ripe state.  相似文献

We investigated sex allocation in a central European population of the facultatively polygynous ant Leptothorax acervorum. The population-wide sex ratio was found to be quite balanced, with a proportional investment in female sexuals of 0.49. Sex allocation varied considerably between colonies, resulting in split sex ratios. The productivity of colonies was negatively correlated with queen number and positively with colony size. In contrast, the sex ratio (proportional investment in female sexuals) was neither correlated with queen number, colony size, nor total sexual production, but with worker relatedness. The uncoupling of the genetic colony structure and queen number presumably results from frequent queen turnover and colony splitting.  相似文献

We determined the sex, order, and clutch size of eggs laid by the parasitoid wasp, Trichogramma pretiosum Riley, in the eggs of one of its natural hosts, Trichoplusia ni (Hübner). The parasitoid allocated sex non-randomly to hosts in the laboratory with a variance significantly less than that of a binomial (random) distribution, our null model. More clutches of two or more eggs contained a single male egg as the second or third egg laid than would be expected by chance and none contained two or more male eggs. T. pretiosum also increased the sex ratio (% male) of its offspring with increasing foundress numbers by increasing the frequency of male offspring as the second egg in a two-egg clutch allocated to unparasitized hosts and as the single egg allocated to previously parasitized hosts. These results indicate that T. pretiosum allocates the sex of its offspring precisely. Precise sex allocation is favored under local mate competition because it reduces variation in the number of sons per patch thus maximizing the number of inseminated daughters emigrating from the patch. Similar combinations of female and male offspring emerged from T. ni eggs parasitized by T. pretiosum in the field, again with a sex ratio variance less than that expected for a binomial distribution. These results strongly suggest that this parasitoid species manifests local mate competition.  相似文献

Maternal manipulation of offspring sex ratio in response to conspecifics is considered in relation to sex ratio theory using the parasitoid wasp Spalangia endius. Females produced a greater proportion of sons in response to mated but not virgin females. This is the first demonstration of a differential sex ratio response to virgin versus mated females and provides support for local mate competition theory. More recent sex ratio models that predict sex ratio responses to conspecifics, specifically constrained, perturbation, and crowding models, were not supported. An increased proportion of sons in response to another mated female occurred on the second day of oviposition but not on the first, and the day effect resulted from experience not age. When females oviposited alone after 2 days' exposure to another female, they still produced a greater proportion of sons than if they had always been alone, but only if the other female was mated, not if she was virgin. Females do not seem to assess the presence of virgin versus mated females indirectly by using a low density of males or a long latency to mate as an indicator for virgin females: neither affected offspring sex ratio. That mated females adjusted their sex ratios in response to other mated females, but not virgin females or males, may be due proximally to mated females not often encountering the latter. Virgin females and males are not located as deep in the oviposition substrate as mated females.  相似文献

I studied patterns of sex ratio variation in 543 fledglings from 192 broods of Montagu's harriers Circus pygargus (1992-1998) in Madrid, central Spain, to determine whether offspring sex ratio was adjusted according to variables influencing future reproduction. Fledgling sex ratio variation was related to estimates of food availability during the pre-laying period, with more females produced in years of higher food availability. This variation was related to the probability that females, but not males, were recruited to the breeding population and were recruited at younger ages, if fledged in good food years. Furthermore, the relationship between food and sex ratio was only significant for the first two nestlings in each brood, and only nestlings from first and second ranks benefited from good breeding conditions to advance their age of first breeding. Results presented here differ from other published data for the same species. Geographical variation in observed sex ratio might be explained by differences between populations in factors influencing age of first breeding or other demographic variables.  相似文献

There are at least two mechanisms by which social monogamy in the absence of biparental care may evolve: as a form of territorial cooperation, in which one or both sexes benefits by sharing a territory with a partner, and as a form of extended mate guarding, in which males guard females through entire, and perhaps multiple, reproductive cycles. I examined the effects of population variables (density, sex ratio, female synchrony) on male pairing behavior in the snapping shrimp, Alpheus angulatus, to test the hypothesis that social monogamy in this genus has evolved as a result of selection on males for long-term mate guarding of females. There was no evidence that pairing behavior changes with differences in population density; in a natural population, there was a 1:1 relationship between the number in pairs and local population density. In a laboratory experiment, males altered their pairing behavior in response to manipulated differences in sex ratio. Males in female-biased sex ratios were significantly more likely to abandon recently mated females than males in equivalent sex ratios, though there was no significant difference in the duration of pairing or the number of times males switched females. Observations of shrimp maintained for an extended period in the laboratory revealed no evidence that females molt and become sexually receptive synchronously, which would reduce the likelihood that a searching male would encounter additional receptive females. These data suggest that sex ratio may have contributed to the evolution of social monogamy in snapping shrimp, but provide no evidence that population density or female synchronous receptivity have contributed to the evolution of social monogamy.  相似文献

Demographic Side Effects of Selective Hunting in Ungulates and Carnivores   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Abstract:  Selective harvesting regimes are often implemented because age and sex classes contribute differently to population dynamics and hunters show preferences associated with body size and trophy value. We reviewed the literature on how such cropping regimes affect the demography of the remaining population (here termed demographic side effects ). First, we examined the implications of removing a large proportion of a specific age or sex class. Such harvesting strategies often bias the population sex ratio toward females and reduce the mean age of males, which may consequently delay birth dates, reduce birth synchrony, delay body mass development, and alter offspring sex ratios. Second, we reviewed the side effects associated with the selective removal of relatively few specific individuals, often large trophy males. Such selective harvesting can destabilize social structures and the dominance hierarchy and may cause loss of social knowledge, sexually selected infanticide, habitat changes among reproductive females, and changes in offspring sex ratio. A common feature of many of the reported mechanisms is that they ultimately depress recruitment and in some extreme cases even cause total reproductive collapse. These effects could act additively and destabilize the dynamics of populations, thus having a stronger effect on population growth rate than first anticipated. Although more experimental than observational studies reported demographic side effects, we argue that this may reflect the quite subtle mechanisms involved, which are unlikely to be detected in observational studies without rigorous monitoring regimes. We call for more detailed studies of hunted populations with marked individuals that address how the expression of these effects varies across mating systems, habitats, and with population density. Theoretical models investigating how strongly these effects influence population growth rates are also required.  相似文献

In this study, the pattern of movement of young male and female rabbits and the genetic structures present in adult male and female populations in four habitats was examined. The level of philopatry in young animals was found to vary between 18-90% for males and 32-95% for females in different populations. It was skewed, with more males dispersing than females in some but not all populations. Analysis of allozyme data using spatial autocorrelation showed that adult females from the same social group, unlike males, were significantly related in four of the five populations studied. Changes in genetic structure and rate of dispersal were measured before and during the recovery of a population that was artificially reduced in size. There were changes in the rate and distance of dispersal with density and sex. Subadults of both sexes moved further in the first year post crash (low density) than in the following years. While the level of dispersal for females was lower than that of the males for the first 3 years, thereafter (high density) both sexes showed similar, low levels of dispersal (20%). The density at which young animals switch behaviour between dispersal and philopatry differed for males and females. The level of genetic structuring in adult females was high in the precrash population, reduced in the first year post crash and undetectable in the second year. Dispersal behaviour of rabbits both affects the genetic structure of the population and changes with conditions. Over a wide range of levels of philopatry, genetic structuring is present in the adult female , but not the male population. Consequently, though genetic structuring is present, it does not lead to inbreeding. More long-distance movements are found in low-density populations, even though vacant warrens are available near birth warrens. The distances moved decreased as density increased. Calculation of the effective population size (Ne) shows that changes in dispersal distance offset changes in density, so that Ne remains constant.  相似文献

The study of the male and female karyotypes of the polychaete Dinophilus gyrociliatus was performed with the aim of ascertaining the diploid number of chromosomes and confirming the existence of karyological differences between the two sexes. Our results evidenced that the female karyotype of D. gyrociliatus consists of 2n=24 chromosomes, while the male karyotype has 2n=23 chromosomes. X chromosomes are subtelocentric and much bigger than the autosomes. The size of the D. gyrociliatus chromosomes, which in the female embryos vary in length from little more than 2.8 wm to less than 0.7 wm, are relatively small by comparison with those of other polychaetes. The existence of maternal and environmental factors able to influence the sex ratio of D. gyrociliatus and chromosomal differences between the sexes confirms that: (1) sex determination is chromosomal and syngamic of the XX-X0 type and (2) control of the sex ratio is progamic and depends on genetic and environmental factors.  相似文献

Gonad morphology and colony composition support the existing supposition that the obligate coral-dwelling damselfish Dascyllus aruanus has a protogynous hermaphroditic sexual pattern. Adults had either an active ovary containing vitellogenic oocytes, an ovotestis, or a spermiated testis and were classified as adult female, hermaphrodite, or adult male, respectively. Among individuals having male function, the testis (or testis portion of the ovotestis) takes the form of an unrestricted spermatogonial lobular testis. Among hermaphrodites having an ovotestis, a small proportion of individuals had a gonad in which both the ovarian and testicular portions were inactive (inactive hermaphrodites), whereas the majority had a predominantly testicular ovotestis that contained spermatozoa (male-active hermaphrodites). The size range of individuals within gonadal classes indicates that all D. aruanus first develop an ovariform gonad. Some individuals then undergo ovarian maturation to become adult females while others develop testicular tissue to form an ovotestis and become male-active hermaphrodites. Subsequently, progressive loss of ovarian tissue results in the development of a secondary testis from an ovotestis with the retention of a residual, afunctional lumen among adult males. The wide size range of individuals having an ovotestis suggests that some hermaphrodites function as adult females before developing testicular tissue while other individuals do not pass through an adult female stage. If this is the case, D. aruanus exhibits a diandric protogynous hermaphroditic sexual pattern. The apparent prolonged retention of an ovotestis with both healthy oocytes and an ovarian-type lumen in a spermiated ovotestis, as well as a functional sex ratio of 1:1 for adult females:adult males plus male-active hermaphrodites also raises the possibility that D. aruanus may be capable of bidirectional sex change during the hermaphroditic stage. Such a capability would be highly adaptive for a species having limited mobility and unpredictable recruitment of new colony members resulting in unpredictable mating opportunities.  相似文献

In polygynous roe deer Capreolus capreolus, males are only slightly heavier than females and the overall sex ratio at birth is close to unity. We studied offspring sex ratio and litter size (range 1–4, n = 74) of culled females, in utero, which provided an opportunity to examine responses of sex ratio to maternal condition. Male embryos were heavier than their sisters, and male fawns (9 months old) heavier than female fawns, suggesting a higher growth rate in males. There was no evidence for differential mortality between the sexes from birth to 9 months old. Heavier adult females produced larger embryos than lighter, or primiparous females. The overall sex ratio of embryos did not differ from unity, but adult does had more male embryos (55%) than primiparous does (32%), and the proportion of male embryos in a litter increased with the mother's body mass. Litter size also tended to increase with maternal age and body mass. We argue that this pattern reflects adaptive variation in offspring sex ratio.  相似文献

The structure, distribution, and population abundance of Oreaster reticulatus (Linnaeus, 1758) in 47,157 ha of shallow-water habitat in the archipelago of Bocas del Toro, Panama, were assessed from May to October 2000. The reproductive cycle of the sea star was studied in Isla Solarte, from February 2000 to February 2001. In total, 4,818 sea stars were recorded with a mean density of 149.7 ind. ha-1, and a population of over 7 million was estimated for the archipelago. O. reticulatus was absent in ca. 50% of the evaluated areas, possibly due to high runoff and sedimentation; highest density was observed in an intermediate-runoff regime (255 ind. ha-1). About 45% of the population was found in substrata dominated by seagrass (Thalassia testudinum) and coarse, calcareous sand, 51% occurred in habitats where coral reef patches were mixed with seagrass, and 4% exclusively on coral reefs. The average size, based on the major radius, was 9.5 cm (3-21 cm), with a population structure composed of ca. 83% juveniles and 17% adults. The average reproductive size, measured as major radius, was 15 cm, and the minimum was 7 cm. Both males and females with a maximum stage (IV) of gonad development were observed throughout the year. The gonad index showed three peaks of maximum reproductive activity, which is not comparable to studies from other localities. The reproductive cycle did not seem to be related to water temperature, which ranged from 27°C to 30°C, but may respond more closely to changes in local rainfall. This relationship was not statistically significant based on this 1-year study. These data provide a useful baseline for management of local populations in the face of an increasing harvest for the aquarium trade and as souvenirs.  相似文献

We focused on male harassment on different female color morphs of the damselfly Ischnura elegans and on variation in morph-specific mating avoidance tactics by females. In I. elegans, one of the female morphs is colored like the conspecific male (andromorphs) while the other morphs are not (gynomorphs). Our first goal was to quantify morph-specific male mating attempts, hence male harassment, in populations with manipulated population parameters (densities, sex ratios, and proportion of andromorphs). Second, we examined the female's perspective by looking for potential differences in morph-specific mating avoidance tactics and success of those tactics in a natural population. Differences in population conditions did influence the number of male mating attempts per morph. The less frequent female morph was always subject to fewer mating attempts, which contradicts earlier hypotheses on mimicry, but supports those that assume that males learn to recognize female morphs. Gynomorphs occupy less open habitat and often fly away when a male approaches, while andromorphs use more open habitat, do not fly large distances and directly face approaching males. Female morphs did not differ in the proportion of successful mating-avoidance attempts. Our results suggest that the maintenance of the color polymorphism is most probably the result of interactive selective forces depending on variation in all population conditions, instead of solely density- or frequency-dependent selection within populations.  相似文献

Biological aspects of the only two epi-/mesopelagic pasiphaeid species distributed along the continental marginof the north-western Mediterranean Sea were studied over the period 1991-1994. The annual reproductive cycle, reproductive output, sex and size distributions by depth (near-bottom distribution), and growth were analysed using 4156 specimens of Pasiphaea sivado (Risso, 1816) and 5491 specimens of P. multidentata Esmark, 1866. The reproductive cycle in the shallower-dwelling species, P. sivado, was nearly continuous, in contrast to the reproductive cycle in P. multidentata, which was markedly seasonal in nature. Both species exhibited similar size and population structure patterns with depth, with individual size increasing along the bottom depth gradient. The shallower-dwelling species had a significantly higher reproductive output level, in terms of the relative number of eggs, than the deeper-dwelling species. Biological trends for each of the species have been compared. The comparative results for these two congeneric species revealed that the biological parameters analysed were closely linked to their population structure. The slight differences in the depth range inhabited by each species have been considered the main environmental factor affecting the life histories of these two species. The data presented supported the hypothesis that depth exerted an important influence on the biological patterns of deep-water species, with the seasonality of reproductive processes increasing in deeper-dwelling species.  相似文献

The possibility of extending brood care via the overlapping presence of relatively short lived adults could generate advantages that may have been among the selective forces at the origin of eusociality. In this paper we provide evidence for extended brood care through sib-rearing in the arid-zone allodapine bee, Exoneurella eremophila. Solitary females of the overwintered generation generally die before all their offspring have become independent. In a relatively high proportion of nests, a newly eclosed female invests in her siblings while producing her own offspring in the maternal nest. The sex ratio of the first offspring produced by the overwintered female is highly female biased, but the overall sex ratio of the brood is unbiased. This finding supports the prediction of Bull's 'insurance by protogyny' model of a female bias in the first-produced offspring as a strategy by the mother to ensure extended brood care.  相似文献

Southern elephant seals Mirounga leonina display extreme sexual dimorphism. In addition females show great variation in size and stored resources at parturition. Therefore they present an excellent opportunity for examination of responses of sex ratio to resource availability. We studied the relationships between the size of southern elephant seal females at parturition and the size and sex of their pups at South Georgia over four breeding seasons. We found a large individual variation in maternal post-partum mass (range 296–977 kg, n=151). Larger mothers gave birth to larger pups, irrespective of the sex of their pup. Male pups were on average 14% larger than females at birth and consequently more costly to bring to parturition. Our results suggest that female southern elephant seals must weigh more than 300 kg if they are to breed at all, and more than 380 kg if they are to give birth to a male pup. Above this threshold the proportion of males among offspring rapidly increases with maternal mass, and stabilizes at a level not significantly different from parity. These results show that smaller females of southern elephant seals vary offspring sex ratio in a way that is consistent with theories on adaptive offspring sex ratio. A smaller mother with a male foetus may benefit from terminating her pregnancy and allocating the resources she saves to her own growth. She could then give birth to and raise a larger pup in the subsequent season.  相似文献

Life-history traits of Plesionika martia (Milne Edwards, 1883) were studied through data collected during six seasonal trawl surveys carried out in the Ionian Sea (eastern-central Mediterranean) between July 1997 and September 1998. P. martia was found at between 304 and 676 m depth, with the highest density in the 400-600 m range. Intraspecific, size-related depth segregation was shown. Recruitment occurred in summer at the shallowest depths. Juveniles moved to the deepest grounds as they grew. The largest female and male were 26 and 25 mm carapace length, respectively. The sex ratio was slightly in favour of females at depths >400 m. Although a seasonal spawning peak was shown, the reproduction appears to be rather prolonged throughout the year. Females with ripe gonads were found from spring to autumn. Ovigerous females with eggs in late maturity stage were found year round. Large females could spawn more than one time within their annual reproductive cycle. The size at first maturity (50% of the ovigerous females) was 15.5 mm CL. Average brood size of eggs with a well-developed embryo was 2,966ǃ,521. Iteroparity, low fecundity and large egg size patterns were observed. Brood size increased according to the carapace length. Two main annual groups were found in the field population of the Ionian Sea. Estimates of the Von Bertalanffy growth parameters are: LX=30.5 mm, k=0.44 year-1 in females; LX=28.0 mm, k=0.50 year-1 in males. A negative allometry was detected mostly in the ovigerous females. The life cycle of P. martia is discussed in the light of life-history adaptations shown in other deep-water shrimp species.  相似文献

Summary Most theories of sex ratio adjustment assume that parents will adjust the sex ratio of births (secondary sex ratio) in a manner that maximizes offspring reproductive success (as long as this does not jeopardize parental reproductive success). Survival to maturity is typically the largest component of variance in offspring reproductive success. This should make environmental predictors of sex-specific offspring survival strong predictors of secondary sex ratio adjustment. We tested this survivorship maximization hypothesis for secondary sex ratio adjustment using data from a 17-year demographic study of 315 yellow baboon infants at Mikumi National Park, Tanzania. Sex differences were found in the degree to which several social and ecological conditions affected infant survival to 1 year. Female, but not male, infant survival was inversely correlated with birth order and the proportion of infant females in their birth cohort. Male, but not female, infant survival was inversely correlated with the amount of rainfall early in the year (January) and the proportion of infant males in their birth cohort; male survival also was positively correlated with maternal dominance rank. The consistency and timing of these effects across years suggested that such information was, in fact, available to females around the time of conception. Most importantly, social and ecological conditions that predicted improved survivorship of a given sex also were positively correlated with production of that sex. Early births were female-biased; and low January rainfall was correlated with a male-biased sex ratio, becoming increasingly female-biased as January rainfall increased. However, no sex ratio effects were correlated with maternal rank. Data supported the hypothesis that females adjusted secondary sex ratio in a manner that maximized sex-specific infant survival. This hypothesis also offered a plausible explanation for some of the contradictory data that have arisen from studies of maternal rank effects on sex ratio both within and between species.Correspondence to: S. Interannual variability in the mesoscale oceanography of the inferred hatching area of winter-spawned Illex argentinus (i.e. those belonging to the Southern Patagonic Stock) was examined during the hatching months of June and July. The hatching area was defined as the region 32°-39°S, 49°-61° W, and indicators of the surface oceanography in this area were derived from remotely sensed advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) sea-surface temperature (SST) data. Interannual variability in the mesoscale oceanic circulation in the inferred hatching area was examined in terms of (1) the area occupied by "frontal" waters (defined as areas with SST gradients of ́°C over an area of 15 km by 15 km), and (2) the area occupied by waters of "favourable" SST (defined as those with temperatures in the range 16-18°C). Oceanographic indicators were compared with an index of I. argentinus recruitment to the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) fishery (catch per licensed vessel) for the period 1987 to 1999. The two oceanographic indicators were seen to co-vary, with a decrease in the proportion of the inferred hatching area occupied by frontal waters corresponding to an increase in the proportion of water of favourable SST. High squid abundance was found to be associated with a lower proportion of frontal waters or a higher proportion of favourable-SST waters within the inferred hatching area in the year preceding the fishery. Interannual variability in the interaction of the Brazil and Falkland Currents in the inferred hatching area during the early life stages is shown to be important in influencing the population size of I, argentinus, and mechanisms influencing squid recruitment in this highly dynamic region are discussed.  相似文献
