A survey of trampling effects on vegetation and soil in eight tropical and subtropical sites 总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
Impacts of recreation, especially of vehicles and walkers, were studied in eight tropical or subtropical public sites in Queensland.
In each site, plant species number, vegetation cover, plant height, and species cover and frequency in untrampled, slightly
trampled, moderately trampled, and heavily trampled areas were counted or measured. Soil penetration resistance and soil organic
matter were also recorded. In two of these eight sites, plant cover, height, leaf length, leaf width, and leaf thickness of
each species were measured. Some species of grass such asCynodon dactylon were present in areas subject to all degrees of trampling impact and some tussock species, particularlyEragrostis tenuifolia andSporobolus elongatus, were only present in trampled areas. Woody plants occurred only on untrampled areas. The number of species and all the vegetative
measurements mentioned above were reduced as wear increased. Plant height was reduced dramatically by even light trampling.
Tall plants appeared to be more sensitive to trampling than short plants. No clear relationship between soil organic matter
content and trampling intensity was found. 相似文献

Effects of Recreational Impacts on Soil Microbial Communities 总被引:51,自引:0,他引:51
/ The functional diversity of soil microbial communities in heavilyimpacted subalpine campsites and adjacent undisturbed areas was comparedusing the Biolog method of carbon utilization profiles. Principal componentsanalysis of patterns and level of microbial activity indicate that microbialcommunities differentiate in response to disturbance in the top 6 cm of soil, while below 6 cm there were no recognizable differences between disturbed andundisturbed soil communities. Analysis of the factors that differentiate theupper microbial communities between disturbed and undisturbed sites revealedthat the percent of total carbon sources utilized was significantly less inthe disturbed (54%) than in undisturbed areas (95%). Carbonsubstrates important in the discrimination between soil communities includeplant, invertebrate, and microbial derivatives that could not be metabolizedby microbial communities from disturbed sites. Comparisons of totalculturable actinomycetes, bacteria, and fungi reveal no difference in overallnumber of colony forming units (CFU) on disturbed and undisturbed sites, buta marked decrease in actinomycetes on disturbed sites. Biolog andspread-plate data combined indicate a shift in the structure and function ofthe microbial community in campsite soils, which may be a useful indicator ofsoil community disturbance.KEY WORDS: Microbial functional diversity; Anthropogenic disturbance;Recreational impacts; Carbon source profile; Subalpine 相似文献

/ This paper describes an integrated model that simulates future halocarbon production/emissions and potential ozone depletion. Applications and historical production levels for various halocarbons are discussed first. A framework is then presented for modeling future halocarbon impacts incorporating differences in underlying demands, applications, regulatory mandates, and environmental characteristics. The model is used to simulate the potential impacts of several prominent issues relating to halocarbon production, regulation, and environmental interactions, notably: changes in agricultural methyl bromide use, increases in effectiveness of bromine for ozone depletion, modifications to the elimination schedule for HCFCs, short-term expansion of CFC demand in low use compliance countries, and delays in Russian Federation compliance. Individually, each issue does not unequivocally represent a significant likely increase in long-term atmospheric halogen loading and stratospheric ozone depletion. In combination, however, these impacts could increase peak halogen concentrations and long-term integral halogen loading, resulting in higher levels of stratospheric ozone depletion and longer exposure to increased levels of UV radiation.KEY WORDS: Halocarbons; Ozone depletion; Montreal Protocol; Integrated assessment 相似文献

Poterium spinosum, competitive under conditions of overgrazing and fire, accounted for 70%–85% of the total plant cover in all sites, except
Santorini, where participation of spiny species was very low. In the recently abandoned sites, annuals accounted for 50%–60%
of the standing biomass, but constituted only a tiny fraction in those abandoned for 30 years or more. This was not paralleled
by any remarkable increase of the total plant cover. In fact, the yearly produced green biomass decreased with the years after
abandonment. The productivity of old fields abandoned for a long time is insufficient to support the grazing animals present.
This shortfall, given the animals' requirements, is most dramatic in Symi. The nonrecovering vegetation in the old fields
of these mountainous islands constitutes a severe environmental threat; remedial measures appear imperative. 相似文献

/ The Ganges River supplies water to the southwest region of Bangladesh mainly through one of its distributaries-the Gorai River. India commissioned a barrage on the Ganges River at Farakka in April 1975 to divert water and make the Bhagirathi-Hooghly River navigable. The diversion has reduced the dry season discharge of the Ganges and Gorai rivers in Bangladesh. Statistical analyses indicate that the changes in the dry season discharge of these rivers are significant. Reduced discharge in the Gorai River has induced accelerated sedimentation and increased salinity in the southwest region of Bangladesh. Empirical analyses demonstrate the relationship between discharge in the Gorai River and salinity. Analyses also determine the requirement of flow for the Ganges and Gorai rivers to keep salinity at threshold limits. Increased salinity has caused negative effects on agriculture, forestry, industry, and drinking water in the southwest region of Bangladesh.KEY WORDS: Bangladesh; Ganges River; Gorai River; Farakka diversion; Salinity 相似文献

Fertilizer Management in Watersheds of Two Ramsar Wetlands and Effects on Quality of Inflowing Water
Two field experiments were carried out in the watersheds of two Ramsar wetland areas, Lakes Koronia and Volvi (area A) and
Lakes Mikri and Megali Prespa (area B), to study the effect of application of N fertilizer on wheat yields, the quality of
runoff water, and the quality of stream water. The treatments were a combination of two methods of fertilizer application
(total amount in fall, and 2/3 in fall + 1/3 in spring) at three rates (0, 100, and 200 kg N/ha) with four replications. Concentrations
of NH4
+, NO3
−, NO2
−, P, and Cl− and pH were determined in all water samples. Runoff water quality was not influenced by fertilizer application in either
area. Chemical parameters for water did not differ along the selected watercourses in area B, while in area A they were higher
in the samples taken near Lake Koronia than in the samples taken upstream, indicating that the watercourses are polluted downstream
by nonagricultural sources. The differences in wheat yields between the 100 and 200 kg N/ha application rates were not high.
These results call for better fertilizer management in order to achieve better yields and to diminish the possibility to have
negative effects to the environment. 相似文献

/ Aquatic resources in Soda Butte Creek within Yellowstone National Park, USA, continue to be threatened by heavy metals from historical mining and milling activities that occurred upstream of the park's boundary. This includes the residue of gold, silver, and copper ore mining and processing in the early 1900s near Cooke City, Montana, just downstream of the creek's headwaters. Toxicity tests, using surrogate test species, and analyses of metals in water, sediments, and macroinvertebrate tissue were conducted from 1993 to 1995. Chronic toxicity to test species was greater in the spring than the fall and metal concentrations were elevated in the spring with copper exceeding water quality criteria in 1995. Tests with amphipods using pore water and whole sediment from the creek and copper concentrations in the tissue of macroinvertebrates and fish also suggest that copper is the metal of concern in the watershed. In order to understand current conditions in Soda Butte Creek, heavy metals, especially copper, must be considered important factors in the aquatic and riparian ecosystems within and along the creek extending into Yellowstone National Park.KEY WORDS: Mining; Metals; Toxicity; Biomonitoring; Copper; Yellowstone National Park 相似文献

/ Rivers transport sediment from eroding uplands to depositional areas near sea level. If the continuity of sediment transport is interrupted by dams or removal of sediment from the channel by gravel mining, the flow may become sediment-starved (hungry water) and prone to erode the channel bed and banks, producing channel incision (downcutting), coarsening of bed material, and loss of spawning gravels for salmon and trout (as smaller gravels are transported without replacement from upstream). Gravel is artificially added to the River Rhine to prevent further incision and to many other rivers in attempts to restore spawning habitat. It is possible to pass incoming sediment through some small reservoirs, thereby maintaining the continuity of sediment transport through the system. Damming and mining have reduced sediment delivery from rivers to many coastal areas, leading to accelerated beach erosion. Sand and gravel are mined for construction aggregate from river channel and floodplains. In-channel mining commonly causes incision, which may propagate up- and downstream of the mine, undermining bridges, inducing channel instability, and lowering alluvial water tables. Floodplain gravel pits have the potential to become wildlife habitat upon reclamation, but may be captured by the active channel and thereby become instream pits. Management of sand and gravel in rivers must be done on a regional basis, restoring the continuity of sediment transport where possible and encouraging alternatives to river-derived aggregate sources.KEY WORDS: Dams; Aquatic habitat; Sediment transport; Erosion; Sedimentation; Gravel mining 相似文献

A Hydrological Model for Predicting the Effects of Dams on the Shoreline Vegetation of Lakes and Reservoirs 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
/ The species richness of shoreline vegetation of unregulated lakes in Nova Scotia, Canada, is known to increase as a function of catchment area, a topographic variable governing water level fluctuations. Predictions based on catchment area however, fail to account for richness patterns at the margins of lakes enlarged by dams. Here, we compare the vegetation and hydrological regimes of regulated and unregulated systems. Hydrological regimes of regulated systems deviated from natural systems of similar catchment area by being either hypovariable or hypervariable for both within-year and among-year fluctuations in water level. Plant communities of dammed systems were less diverse, contained more exotic species, and were, with one exception, devoid of rare shoreline herbs. Data from "recovering," or previously dammed systems indicated that shoreline communities can be restored upon return of the appropriate hydrological regime. Using observed within-year and among-year water level fluctuation data, we propose a general model for the maintenance or restoration of diverse herbaceous wetlands on shorelines of temperate lakes or reservoirs. Managers can manipulate the within-year water level variation within prescribed limits (1-2 m), while ensuring that among-year variation (SD of summer levels) is less than 25% of within-year variation. This preliminary model is based on data from low-fertility, temperate lakes in river systems. To calibrate the model, plant community data from other regions are needed, as are long-term water-level data for unregulated lakes, data which are essential but largely lacking in many areas.KEY WORDS: Catchment area; Regulated lakes; Shoreline restoration; Rare plants; Exotic plants; Diversity 相似文献

Modeling Urban Growth Effects on Surface Runoff with the Integration of Remote Sensing and GIS 总被引:18,自引:0,他引:18
Weng Q 《Environmental management》2001,28(6):737-748
A methodology is developed to relate urban growth studies to distributed hydrological modeling using an integrated approach
of remote sensing and GIS. This linkage is possible because both studies share land-use and land-cover data. Landsat Thematic
Mapper data are utilized to detect urban land-cover changes. GIS analyses are then conducted to examine the changing spatial
patterns of urban growth. The integration of remote sensing and GIS is applied to automate the estimation of surface runoff
based on the Soil Conservation Service model. Impacts of urban growth on surface runoff and the rainfall–runoff relationship
are examined by linking the two modeling results with spatial analysis techniques. This methodology is applied to the Zhujiang
Delta of southern China, where dramatic urban growth has occurred over the past two decades, and the rampant urban growth
has created severe problems in water resources management. The results revealed a notably uneven spatial pattern of urban
growth and an increase of 8.10 mm in annual runoff depth during the 1989–1997 period. An area that experienced more urban
growth had a greater potential for increasing annual surface runoff. Highly urbanized areas were more prone to flooding. Urbanization
lowered potential maximum storage, and thus increased runoff coefficient values. 相似文献

Assessing Biotic Integrity of Streams: Effects of Scale in Measuring the Influence of Land Use/Cover and Habitat Structure on Fish and Macroinvertebrates 总被引:19,自引:2,他引:19
/ Fish and macroinvertebrate assemblage composition, instream habitat features and surrounding land use were assessed in an agriculturally developed watershed to relate overall biotic condition to patterns of land use and channel structure. Six 100-m reaches were sampled on each of three first-order warm-water tributaries of the River Raisin in southeastern Michigan. Comparisons among sites and tributaries showed considerable variability in fish assemblages measured with the index of biotic integrity, macroinvertebrate assemblages characterized with several diversity indexes, and both quantitative and qualitative measurements of instream habitat structure. Land use immediate to the tributaries predicted biotic condition better than regional land use, but was less important than local habitat variables in explaining the variability observed in fish and macroinvertebrate assemblages. Fish and macroinvertebrates appeared to respond differently to landscape configuration and habitat variables as well. Fish showed a stronger relationship to flow variability and immediate land use, while macroinvertebrates correlated most strongly with dominant substrate. Although significant, the relationships between instream habitat variables and immediate land use explained only a modest amount of the variability observed. A prior study of this watershed ascribed greater predictive power to land use. In comparison to our study design, this study covered a larger area, providing greater contrast among subcatchments. Differences in outcomes suggests that the scale of investigation influences the strength of predictive variables. Thus, we concluded that the importance of local habitat conditions is best revealed by comparisons at the within-subcatchment scale. Strategic Environmental Assessment of Plans and Programs: A Methodology for Estimating Effects on Biodiversity 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We developed a methodology for biodiversity evaluations within the process of Strategic Environmental Assessment and we applied
it to the estimation of the effect of two Regional Plans of Development on all bird species inhabiting the Castilla y León
region (northwestern Spain). The methodology is based on the evaluation of the effects of main development actions on the
habitat requirements of species. From these evaluations, and from data on the current distribution and population size (number
of individuals) of each species, we estimated the most likely pattern of distribution and population size after the full implementation
of the plans for each species. The impacts of the plans were quantified as the differences between the pre- and postproject
patterns after codifying them to compensate for differences in the quality of the information available among species. Overall,
we conclude that the proposed methodology fulfills the requirements for its use within the SEA process as it allows for the
assessment of cumulative impacts on every species, highlighting the development directions and the habitat types with major
impacts, and ascertaining whether impacts affect species with either low or high conservation and/or economic value. Generalization
of the proposed methodology to other regions or species will require wildlife-habitat models adequate for SEA analyses, so
that we also propose guidelines for the development and validation of these models. 相似文献

Effects of Protective Fencing on Birds, Lizards, and Black-Tailed Hares in the Western Mojave Desert
MATTHEW BROOKS 《Environmental management》1999,23(3):387-400
Lepus californicus ), perennial plant cover, and structural diversity of perennial plants were evaluated from spring 1994 through winter 1995
at the Desert Tortoise Research Natural Area (DTNA), in the Mojave Desert, California. Abundance and species richness of birds
were higher inside than outside the DTNA, and effects were larger during breeding than wintering seasons and during a high
than a low rainfall year. Ash-throated flycatchers (Myiarchus cinerascens), cactus wrens (Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus), LeConte's thrashers (Toxostoma lecontei), loggerhead shrikes (Lanius ludovicianus), sage sparrows (Amphispiza belli), and verdins (Auriparus flaviceps) were more abundant inside than outside the DTNA. Nesting activity was also more frequent inside. Total abundance and species
richness of lizards and individual abundances of western whiptail lizards (Cnemidophorous tigris) and desert spiny lizards (Sceloporus magister) were higher inside than outside. In contrast, abundance of black-tailed hares was lower inside. Structural diversity of
the perennial plant community did not differ due to protection, but cover was 50% higher in protected areas. Black-tailed
hares generally prefer areas of low perennial plant cover, which may explain why they were more abundant outside than inside
the DTNA. Habitat structure may not affect bird and lizard communities as much as availability of food at this desert site,
and the greater abundance and species richness of vertebrates inside than outside the DTNA may correlate with abundances of
seeds and invertebrate prey. 相似文献

Effects of Local Land Use on Physical Habitat, Benthic Macroinvertebrates, and Fish in the Whitewater River, Minnesota, USA 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Best management practices (BMPs) have been developed to address soil loss and the resulting sedimentation of streams, but information is lacking regarding their benefits to stream biota. We compared instream physical habitat and invertebrate and fish assemblages from farms with BMP to those from farms with conventional agricultural practices within the Whitewater River watershed of southeastern Minnesota, USA, in 1996 and 1997. Invertebrate assemblages were assessed using the US EPA's rapid bioassessment protocol (RBP), and fish assemblages were assessed with two indices of biotic integrity (IBIs). Sites were classified by upland land use (BMP or conventional practices) and riparian management (grass, grazed, or wooded buffer). Physical habitat characteristics differed across buffer types, but not upland land use, using an analysis of covariance, with buffer width and stream as covariates. Percent fines and embeddedness were negatively correlated with buffer width. Stream sites along grass buffers generally had significantly lower percent fines, embeddedness, and exposed streambank soil, but higher percent cover and overhanging vegetation when compared with sites that had grazed or wooded buffers. RBP and IBI scores were not significantly different across upland land use or riparian buffer type but did show several correlations with instream physical habitat variables. RBP and IBI scores were both negatively correlated with percent fines and embeddedness and positively correlated with width-to-depth ratio. The lack of difference in RBP or IBI scores across buffer types suggests that biotic indicators may not respond to local changes, that other factors not measured may be important, or that greater improvements in watershed condition are necessary for changes in biota to be apparent. Grass buffers may be a viable alternative for riparian management, especially if sedimentation and streambank stability are primary concerns. 相似文献

This study performed the first systematic evaluation of the success of habitat mitigation at establishing the threatened Valley elderberry longhorn beetle (Desmocerus californicus dimorphus) and its host plant, blue elderberry (Sambucus mexicana). Habitat mitigation performed through enforcement of the U.S. Endangered Species Act represents a tightly controlled form of habitat restoration, facilitating the evaluation of restoration practice. Restoration plantings of blue elderberry have been substantial in our study area, the Central Valley of California. Surveys of 30 mitigation sites and 16 nearby natural sites showed that mitigation sites were a fraction of the size of natural habitat areas (mean = 24%) and contained smaller shrubs. The beetle colonized 53% of mitigation sites and its populations were denser in sites with moderate levels of dead stems on elderberry shrubs, and moderate damage to elderberry stems and bark. This likely indicates that the beetle responds to stressed shrubs, which are likely to contain elevated levels of nitrogen. Beetle density also increased with the size and age of mitigation sites. This indicates a need to make restoration sites as large as possible and to monitor these sites for longer than current guidelines suggest, thereby allowing more time for convergence of natural and mitigation sites. Few factors examined here directly influenced the growth of elderberry shrubs, but elderberry grew more rapidly in sites closer to riparian areas, indicating that such sites should be favored for mitigation sites. 相似文献
