The lugwormArenicola marina L. oxidizes entering sulfide to thiosulfate. After 8 h of normoxic incubations with sulfide concentrations of 0.2 to 1.0 mmoll-1 thiosulfate in the coelomic fluid amounted up to about 4 mmoll-1 whereas sulfite concentrations were 100-fold lower and no accumulation of sulfate in the coelomic fluid was found. The sulfide oxidation was highly oxygen dependent. An increase of oxygen partial pressure ( ) in the medium was followed by enhanced thiosulfate production and by a decrease of sulfide concentration in the coelomic fluid. Under normoxia, the sulfide oxidation rate was sufficient to compensate the influx of sulfide into the coelomic fluid when the sulfide concentration in the medium was below 0.33 mmoll-1. When external sulfide was raised beyond this level, sulfide up to 5 moll-1 in the coelomic fluid appeared. Succinate in the body wall tissue was low as long as no sulfide appeared in the coelomic fluid, indicating the maintenance of an aerobic metabolism. The oxidation of sulfide to thiosulfate was localized in the mitochondria of the body wall tissue. The oxygen consumption of mitochondria was stimulated by the addition of sulfide. The mitochondrial sulfide oxidation rate depended on the amount of mitochondrial protein and followed a Michaelis-Menten kinetic. An apparentK m of 0.68±0.29 moll-1 and aV max of 41.9±22.3 nmol min-1 mg-1 protein was calculated. Sulfide was stoichiometrically oxidized to thiosulfate with 1 mol sulfide consuming 1 mol oxygen. Sulfide oxidation was not inhibited by sulfide concentrations as high as 100 moll-1. At low concentrations of cyanide or azide, when respiration without sulfide was already inhibited, sulfide oxidation could still be stimulated, tentatively indicating the existence of an alternative terminal oxidase. Specimens examined in the present study were collected near St. Pol de Leon, France, from 1989 to 1992.  相似文献

The coralline alga Phymatolithon calcareum was dredged from 13 m in the Kattegatt, Baltic Sea, in December, 1980, and its rate of calcification was measured by 45Ca++-uptake methods. Light-saturated calcification rates at 5°C ranged from 15.8 g CaCO3 g-1 dry wt h-1 for the basal parts of the plants to 38.7 g CaCO3 g-1 dry wt h-1 for the tips. These age gradients were not apparent when calcification rates were expressed on the basis of surface area. Experiments with salinity (10, 20, 30) and temperature (0°, 5°, 10°, 20°C) indicated that optimum conditions for calcification were at 30 S and at temperatures above 10°C. Salinity had a greater influence on calcification rate than did temperature, and there was a positive relationship between salinity and calcification rate at all temperatures. In 6 mo old cultures, salinity was again the important factor, with all plants remaining healthy at 30 except those at the highest temperature (20°C). These trends, and the low calcification rates at 10S (4.6 g CaCO3 g-1 dry wt h-1 at 5°C to 8.6 g CaCO3g-1 dry wt h-1 at 20°C) suggest that low salinity may be the explanation for the general absence of P. calcareum from the brackish waters of the Baltic Sea. Short-term experiments in which salinity was kept constant while Ca++ concentration was altered, and experiments in which salinity was varied and Ca++ concentration kept constant, suggest that it is the calcium ion concentration and not salinity per se which affects calcification rates.  相似文献

Two vegetative clones (designated 11/85 and 7/86 in accordance with month/year of collection) of the green macroalga Ulva rotundata were collected in the vicinity of Beaufort, North Carolina, USA. Each was grown in an outdoor continuous-flow system in summer (20°C) of 1986 and late winter (10° to 17°C) of 1987, in irradiances ranging from 9 to 100% of full sunlight, with and without NH 4 + enrichment. Continuous enrichment of influent estuarine water (dissolved inorganic nitrogen 2 M, N:P5) to 8–12 M NH 4 + had only a slight effect on growth rate. Temperature changes of 2 to 3°C had a much greater effect. Prolonged exposure to a given daily irradiance resulted in acclimation, exposure to a given daily irradiance resulted in acclimation, indicated by faster growth of conditioned plants relative to those transferred from a different irradiance. Most of the difference in growth rates between transferred and control plants was attributed to differences in thallus absorptance. Growth was photoinhibited above 40% sunlight at temperatures below 15°C, but not above 20°C. Following interday irradiance transfers, thallus percent dry weight changed in a manner that suggests different response times for photosynthesis and cell division.  相似文献

Vertical distributions of picophytoplankton (ppp) (<2 m) were studied by ship-board flow cytometry during two cruises in Western Pacific waters to Palau and to Australia in 1990. Weak red-fluorescing small ppp, supposed to be free-living prochlorophytes (Chisholm et al. 1988), were abundant in the area surveyed. These ppp, designated the prochlorophytes, were abundant in the surface waters (>104 cells ml-1) at the northern region (27°03N; 7°11N) in November, whereas in December at the southern tropical stations (0°23.54S; 9°20.30S; 13°50.6S), they formed subsurface maximum layers (>105 cells ml-1) on a nitracline at a depth of 3.5 to 5.4% surface irradiation. Their fluorescence intensity increased with depth below 10% surface irradiation. The prochlorophytes at a depth of 1% surface irradiation had ten times higher fluorescence than those at the surface layer. The total fluorescence intensity of the prochlorophytes accounted for 32 to 63% of the sum of the total fluorescence intensity of all fluorescing phytoplankton detected at subsurface chlorophyll maxima in the tropical area. These results suggest that distribution of the prochlorophytes is greatly affected by nitracline and by light intensity and that their chlorophyll is a major contributor to the subsurface chlorophyll maximum in the pelagic West Pacific Ocean.  相似文献

We demonstrate that carbon, hydrogen and sulphur isotope ratios both, in the total peat (13Ctp=–25.52 to –28.27, Dtp=–78.67 and –109.24, 34S=4.35 to 19.87), and in cellulose from the peat (13Cnc=–25.06 to –27.33 and Dnc=–92.43 to –118.02) are not affected by postdepositional changes. Therefore, the original isotope composition of plants are in general preserved in the peat and represent an archive of the past environmental variations. These can be supported by (i) good correlations between 13Ctp and 13Cnc, and between Dtp and Dnc, (ii) high horizontal homogeneity of 13Ctp and 13Cnc in the scale of one peat-bog – the same major factor(s) control(s) C isotopic ratios, (iii) no correlation between organic sulphur concentrations and 34S value –34S results from variations in the water level. This revised version was published online January 2005 with corrections to the title.  相似文献

Riftia pachyptila Jones, 1981, lives in association with a chemoautotrophic, sulfide-oxidizing -Proteobacterium that occurs in a specialized organ, the trophosome. Ultrastructurally different bacterial subpopulations occur in different regions of the trophosome lobules (central rods, median small cocci, peripheral large cocci) and contain vesicles, which have been proposed to be sites of elemental sulfur storage. Differently colored trophosomes have been suggested to reflect different amounts of elemental sulfur in the tissue. In this study, the presence of elemental sulfur (S0) was confirmed in the vesicles of the symbionts of R. pachyptila by electron energy loss spectrography (EELS). The proportion of (two-dimensional) area occupied by sulfur vesicles in the cells was found to be strongly correlated with trophosome color, both in individuals with uniformly colored trophosomes and individuals that exhibited a gradual color change along the length of their trophosomes. Elemental sulfur content was highly variable between individuals from a single collection, suggesting a high degree of microhabitat heterogeneity within vestimentiferan aggregations.Communicated by O. Intertidal organisms may employ circatidal rhythms to track the tidal cycle, but tidal patterns may vary within a species range and necessitate adaptation to the local tides. Circatidal rhythms were examined in populations of the eastern Pacific fiddler crab Uca princeps (Smith) from four sites with differing tidal characteristics, La Paz (24°10N; 110°21W), San Blas (21°33N; 105°18W) and Manzanillo (19°6N; 104°24W), Mexico (lower amplitude, mixed semidiurnal tides) and Mata de Limon, Costa Rica (9°55N; 84°43W) (high-amplitude, semidiurnal tides). Local tides were characterized by harmonic constants of M2, S2, K1, and O1, partial tides that largely determine their semidiurnal and diurnal features. Rhythmic structure in continuously recorded locomotor activity of individual crabs held under laboratory conditions was described by cosinor and periodogram methods of time-series analysis. Both daily and circatidal rhythms were found in crabs studied in light–dark cycles set to local conditions at the time of collection. Crabs at all four sites shared a tendency toward bimodality, with a mid-morning activity peak and varying degrees of nocturnal activity. Circatidal rhythms closely matching the period of the 12.42-h M2 partial tide were consistently present at all sites except Manzanillo. At Mata de Limon, the circatidal rhythm clearly dominated locomotor activity, but was strongly modulated by a daily rhythm in a repeating pattern at a semilunar interval. In contrast, the amplitude of the daily rhythm was higher than that of the circatidal rhythm in crabs from the three mixed tide sites on the Mexican coast, where the tidal pattern is dominated by a diurnal inequality arising from the diurnal K1 and O1 partial tides. These results suggest that populations of U. princeps use both daily and circatidal timing systems to track local forms of the tide generated by their M2, S2, K1, and O1 geophysical counterparts.Communicated by J.P. Individuals of the midwater ctenophore Bathocyroe fosteri (0.01 to 1.6 g dry weight, DW) were collected from Bahamian waters by the submersible Johnson-Sea-Link during May and September/October 1983 and October/November 1984 from 530 to 700 m depth. Metabolic rates were measured and showed oxygen consumption to be in the range of 0.01 to 0.18 mg O2 g-1 DW h-1 at temperatures ranging from 9° to 12°C. Ammonium excretion (0.01 to 0.14 g-at N g-1 DW h-1) was typically low. Energy expenditures estimated from respiration data (ca. 7% body C d-1) indicated that one to three midwater crustacean prey (ca. 150 g C d-1) could provide the daily maintenance ration required by a 40 mm ctenophore. These metabolic characteristics complemented in situ observations of poor locomotor ability and passive feeding behavior.  相似文献

Respiration rates of Thais haemastoma and Callinectes sapidus were determined as a function of salinity with a flow-through respirometer at 20°C. Respiration rates were measured at 10, 20 and 30 S for acclimated animals. The effects of 10-5-10, 20-10-20, 30-10-30 and 10-30-10 S semidiurnal cycles (12 h) of fluctuating salinity on the rate of respiration of the oyster drill were studied. During each cycle, salinity was changed from the acclimation salinity over a 4 h interval, held at that salinity for 2 h, returned to the acclimation salinity over 4 h and held at that salinity for 2 h. The effects of diurnal (24.8 h) salinity cycles on respiration in the oyster drill and blue crab were also studied. Salinity was changed from the acclimation salinity over a 10.4 h interval, held at that salinity for 2 h, then returned to the acclimation salinity over 10.4 h and held at that salinity for 2 h. The respiration rate of 30 S acclimated oyster drills (679 l O2 g dry weight–1 h–1) was significantly higher than for individuals acclimated to 10 S (534 l O2 g dry weight–1 h–1). Blue crab respiration was 170 l O2 g dry weight–1 h–1 at 30 S, and was significantly higher at 10 and 20 S than at 30 S. With the exception of the 20-10-20 S semidiurnal cycle, the respiration rate of oyster drills declined as salinity fluctuated in either direction from the acclimation salinity and increased as ambient salinity returned to the acclimation salinity. Semidiurnal cycles (12 h) of fluctuating salinity produced greater changes in the respiration rate of snails than analogous diurnal cycles (24.8 h). A 10-30-10 S pattern of fluctuation caused a greater percentage reduction in the steady state respiration rate of oyster drills than the 30-10-30 S pattern. The respiration rate of blue crabs varied inversely with fluctuating salinity. Relatively minor changes occurred in blue crab respiration rate with fluctuating salinity. Blue crab respiration rate characteristically dropped during the initial phase of declining salinity at a rate directly proportional to the rate of salinity decrease, perhaps representing a metabolic adjustment period by the blue crabs. The respiratory response of T. haemastoma to salinity is consistent with its incomplete volume regulation, while the response of C. sapidus is compatible with its ability to regulate extracellular fluid osmotic and ionic composition.  相似文献

Michaelis-Menten uptake kinetics were observed at all light intensities. With constant illumination, the Vmax and K1 in nitrate uptake over the natural light intensity range of 0 to 2000 E were 0.343 g-at NO3–N(g)-1 at protein-N h-1 and 26 E, respectively. Nitrate uptake was inhibited at higher light intensities. The Ks for nitrate uptake did not vary as a function of light intensity remaining relatively constant at 0.62 g-at NO3–N 1-1. With intermittent illumination, the Vmzx for light intensity in nitrate uptake over a light intensity range of 0 to 5000 E was 0.341 g-at NO3–N(g)-1-at protein-N h-1. No inhibition of nitrate uptake was observed at higher than natural light intensities. Chaetoceros curvisetus will probably never experience light inhibition of nitrate uptake under natural conditions.  相似文献

The effects of sublethal concentrations of mercury in combination with stressful temperature-salinity regimes were considered for larval development of the fiddler crab Uca pugilator (Bosc.). Control organisms were compared to those treated with 1.8 ppb Hg for the following suboptimal regimes: 30°C, 30 S; 30°C, 20 S; 20°C, 30 S, and 20°C, 20 S. As physiological indicators of larval response, the survival rate, the O2 consumption rate, and phototactic response were measured, following either acute 24 h doses of Hg, or chronic rearing in Hg. All response parameters were modified in larvae maintained under the suboptimal conditions; mercury compounded the effects.Supported by Grant No. 18080 FYI from the Environmental Protection Agency.  相似文献

In a study to assess qualitatively the importance of organic matter derived from kelp production in the Aleutian Islands of subarctic Alaka, replicated samples of autotrophic sources and primary and secondary consumer organisms were sampled for 13C among sources, sites, (treatment) islands, and years. Unanticipated variation in the 13C of kelps occurred among overtly similar sites at different islands. Variation in the 13C of the surface canopy-forming kelp Alaria fistulosa was particularly extreme, ranging from-15.5 to-28.0 compared to the understory kelps, Laminaria spp. A. fistulosa 13C varied by as much as 6 to 7 among similar sites at a given island within years, and by as much as 3 to 4 between years at the same sampling site. In serveral cases, 13C variation was weakly tracked by some consumer organisms, suggesting that even detritus pathways through the food web can be localized and tightly coupled. Dynamic cycles in the concentration and 13C of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and aqueous CO2 concentration ([CO2]aq) were measured at three sites on one island. The 13C or organic carbon fixed by A. fistulosa, calculated from diurnal DIC concentration and 13C measurements, varied by 15 and varied inversely with [CO2]aq concentrations. Local DIC variability, probably resulting from high productivity and decreased turbulence in dense kelp habitats, provides a possible mechanism of variation in kelp 13C. The short-term variability in the 13C of organic carbon fixed by kelps indicates that sampling methodology and design must assess this potential variation in marine macrophyte 13C before making assumptions about the transfer of 13C-invariate organic matter to higher trophic levels. On the positive side, a predictable relationship between [CO2]aq concentration and kelp 13C offers a potentially robust means to assess productivity effects on CO2 limination in kelps and other complex aquatic macrophyte habitats.  相似文献

Main effects and interactions of light and temperature on rates of growth (), net photosynthesis (Ps), and dark respiration (R) of the red seaweedGracilaria tikvahiae were investigated in outdoor, nutrient-replete continuous-flow seawater culture chambers. Below 15°C,G. tikvahiae did not grow and between 15° and 30°C, both main effects and interactions of light and temperature on and Ps were significant, which explains the occurrence of this alga as a summer annual in its northern range. Temperature interacted with light (I) through its influence on the vs I and Ps vs I curves. The initial slope of the vs I curve, , the light saturation intensity, Is, and maximum growth rate, max, were all significantly lowerat 15°C compared to 20°, 25°, or 30°C. Maximum values of max, the Ps:R ratio and the net photosynthesis:gross photosynthesis ratio (Ps:Pg) all occurred at 25°C, suggesting that this is the best temperature for growth ofG. tikvahiae. Values for Pmax increased up to 30°C, indicating that the temperature for maximum growth and net photosynthesis are not the same forG. tikvahiae. Significant photoinhibition of growth and photosynthesis at full incident sunlight (I0) occurred at 15°C but not at 20°, 25°, or 30°C. Steele's equation fit the 15°C vs I data best, whereas the hyperbolic tangent function fit the 20°, 25°, and 30°C data best. Main effects and interactionof light intensity and temperature on rates of R were also significant (P<0.001). R was highly intercorrelated with and Ps (0.86r0.94), indicating that R inG. tikvahiae is primarily regulated by growth rate and not temperatureper se. Environmental factors that regulate growth, such as light intensity, exert a great influence on R inG. tikvahiae.  相似文献

The reef coral Pocillopora damicornis (Linnaeus) was grown for 8 wk in four nutrient treatments: control, consisting of ambient, unfiltered Kaneohe Bay seawater [dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN, 1.0 M) and dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP, 0.3 M)]; nitrogen enrichment (15 M DIN as ammonium); phosphorus enrichment (1.2 M DIP as inorganic phosphate); and 15 M DIN+1.2 M DIP. Analyses of zooxanthellae for C, N, P and chlorophyll a after the 8 wk experiment indicated that DIN enrichment increased the cellular chlorophyll a and excess nitrogen fraction of the algae, but did not affect C cell-1. DIP enrichment decreased both C and P cell-1, but the decrease was proportionally less for C cell-1. the response of cellular P to both DIN and DIP enrichment appeared to be in the same direction and could not be explained as a primary effect of external nutrient enrichment. The observed response of cellular P might be a consequence of in situ CO2 limitation. DIN enrichment could increase the CO2 (aq) demand by increasing the net production per unit area. DIP enrichment could slow down calcification, thus decreasing the availability of CO2 (aq) in the coral tissue.Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology Contribution No. 920  相似文献

Photosynthesis and respiration in Ahnfeltia plicata (Huds.) Fries (Gigartinales) was measured in a seawater flowthrough system at different temperatures, salinities and photon flux densities (PFD). The exchanges of dissolved oxygen and inorganic carbon were continuously recorded with an oxygen probe and a pH electrode measuring variation in CO2–HCO 3 - equilibrium as pH changes. Highest apparent photosynthesis at moderate photon flux density (PFD 50 E m-2 s-1) was found at 15°C and 33 S. Photosynthesis was measured up to PFD 500 E m-2 s-1 and no light saturation was documented. In the present experimental set-up, with continuous supply of fresh seawater, the number of limiting factors during photosynthesis measurements is reduced.  相似文献

The 30-d survival limit of Eupentacta quinquesemita and Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis is 12–13 S. The activity coefficient (1 000/righting time in seconds) of stepwise acclimated sea urchins declined from 16.3 at 30 S to 3.5 at 15 S. Oxygen consumption rates (QO2) of both species held at 30 S and 13°C were highest in June and lowest in December. During the summer, when environmental salinity is most variable in southeastern Alaska, the QO2 of both species held at 30, 20 and 15 S varied directly with salinity. Perivisceral fluid PO2 varied directly with acclimation salinity in sea urchins, but not in sea cucumbers. Perivisceral fluid oxygen content of acclimated sea urchins was significantly lower at 15 and 20 S than at 30 S due to reduced PO2 and extracellular fluid volume at the lower salinities. The QO2 of both species varied directly with ambient salinity during a 30-10-30. semidiurnal pattern of fluctuating salinity. No change occurred in the average QO2 of either species over a 15-30-15. semidiurnal pattern of fluctuating salinity. Sea urchin perivisceral fluid PO2 declined as ambient salinity fluctuated away from the acclimation salinity in both cycles and increased as ambient salinity returned to the acclimation salinity. Total nitrogen excretion of stepwise acclimated sea cucumbers declined significantly from 30 to 15 S, but there was no salinity effect on total nitrogen excretion in sea urchins. Ammonia excretion varied directly with salinity in stepwise acclimated sea cucumbers (67–96% of total nitrogen excreted), but there was no salinity effect on ammonia excretion (89–95% of total nitrogen excreted) of sea urchins. Urea excretion did not vary with salinity in sea cucumbers (2–4% of total nitrogen excreted) or sea urchins (2–9% of total nitrogen excreted). Primary amines varied inversely with salinity in sea cucumbers (2–30% of total nitrogen excreted), but did not vary with salinity in sea urchins (2–4% of total nitrogen excreted). The oxygen: nitrogen ratio of both species indicated that carbohydrate and/or lipid form the primary catabolic substrate. The O:N ratio did not vary as a function of salinity. Both species are more tolerant to reduced salinity than previously reported, however, rates of oxygen consumption and/or nitrogen excretion are modified by salinity as well as season.  相似文献

Current estimates indicate that atmospheric nitrogen deposition is responsible for 26 to over 70% of new nitrogen (N) input to North Carolina estuaries and coastal waters. Concentrations of N in coastal rainfall events in a 2-yr period (August 1990 to 1992) ranged from 0.7 to 144 M for NO 3 - and 0.5 to 164 M for NH 4 + . The 15N values of the NO 3 - and the NH 4 + were determined in 15 rain events. NH4 + values averaged-3.13 (range:-12.5 to+3.6), while NO 3 - plus dissolved organic N fractions had an average 15N of+1.0 (range:-2.0 to+4.7). The uptake of this isotopically light N into particulate N, in parallel with primary productivity and biomass (as chlorophyll a) determinetions, was examined in microcosm and mesocosm bioassays. As phytoplankton productivity and biomass increased with added rainwater N, the 15N of particulate N decreased. To investigate the effects of significant atmospheric N loading with stable isotope tracers, we measured the 15N of the>1 m fraction from surrounding coastal waters. Owing to the episodic nature of atmospheric deposition and the great variation in N loading with each event, a simple assessment of the atmospheric contribution was not possible. During a period in which rainfall inputs were significant and frequent (August 1992), 15N values were several more negative than during periods of drought (Fall 1990). These experiments and observations emphasize the contribution of atmospheric nitrogen deposition to new production in coastal waters.  相似文献

Dissolution rates of silica from diatoms decomposing at various temperatures   总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12
In a study of silica dissolution from diatoms, the rate coefficient (K) h-1 of raw diatom cells was estimated as 4 to 5 times smaller than that of the acid-digested siliceous skeletons. The dissolution rate coefficient at early stage (K1) can be predicted as a function of temperature (T°C): in K1=+T, where is the frequency factor depending on the properties of diatom species, ranging from -7.35 to-`0.38, and the temperature coefficient is 0.0833 for all species. Activation energies were calculated to be 1.37 to 1.38 Kcal mol-1. This equation suggests that the rate coefficient K1 increases by a factor of 2.27 for each 10 C° rise in temperature. This equation will also be applied to a new approach for the fate and behavior of biogenous silica settling through a water column by introducing the term temperature into a model.  相似文献

Juveniles of the prawnPenaeus chinensis (3.96 ±0.18 cm, 0.36±0.06 g) reared in Taiwan in 1989 were exposed to different concentrations of ammonia and nitrite, by a static renewal method in 33 seawater at pH 7.94 and at 26 °C. The 24, 48, 96 and 120 h LC50 (median lethal concentration) of ammonia were 3.29, 2.10, 1.53 and 1.44 mg l–1 for NH3-N (un-ionized ammonia as nitrogen) and 79.97, 51.14, 37.00 and 35.09 mg l–1 for ammonia-N (un-ionized plus ionized ammonia as nitrogen). The 24, 96, 120, 144 and 192 h LC50 of nitrite-N were 339, 37.71, 29.18, 26.98 and 22.95 mg l–1. The LC50 decreased with increasing exposure time. During the first 96 h,P. chinesis juveniles were more susceptible to ammonia than nitrite. However, prawns were less tolerant to nitrite than ammonia when exposed for more than 96 h. The threshold was found at 120 and 192 h for ammonia and nitrite, respectively, on the toxicity curves. Incipient LC50 was 1.44 mg l–1 for NH3-N, 35.09 mg l–1 for ammonia-N and 22.95 mg l–1 for nitrite-N. The safe value forP. chinensis juveniles was 0.14, 3.51 and 2.30 mg l–1, respectively.  相似文献

This study investigated geochemical characteristics of the acid mine drainage (AMD) discharged from the abandoned mine adits in the vicinity of the Dogye coal mine in Korea. Acid mine drainage discharged from Jeoncha pit adit of the Dogye coal mine, which is the main source of the AMD in the study area, had a pH value of 3.0 and concentrations of 2148mg SO4 2– L–1, 229mg Fe L–1, 71mg A1 L–1 and 11mg Mn L–1. The reduction of some metal concentrations downstream from the discharge point could be explained on the basis of dilution and precipitation. The order of removal of metal ions downstream from the discharge point was Fe>A1, Cu>Zn, Mn. Acidity could be used as a good determining factor offering comprehensive and quantitative values for the polluting extent of acid mine drainage. The acidities existing in all acidic water samples in the Gunahan district originated primarily from mineral acidity, especially in the upper Nahan Creek from dissolved Fe and Al and in the middle and down Nahan Creek from dissolved Al. From the application of the WATEQ4F program, it was determined that predominant species of dissolved Fe in all water samples was Fe2+, and those of dissolved Al were AlSO4 + and Al3+ except for IW2 sample which was associated with white precipitates. The species of dissolved Al in IW2 sample include also AlOH2+ and Al(OH)2 +. The saturation indices of goethite and haematite were positive in the water samples associated with ochrous precipitates (usually called Yellow Boy), therefore these solids might be precipitated. For the IW2 sample, the saturation indices of amorphous Al(OH)3 and gibbsite were positive, so theoretically these solids might also be precipitated. By XRD analysis, it was found that goethite occurs in ochrous precipitates, and gibbsite in white precipitates.  相似文献
