The levels, potential sources and ecological risks of hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) in Yellow River of Henan section, a typical agricultural area in China, were investigated. Surface water samples and suspended particulate matters (SPMs) were collected from 23 sites during two seasons. In wet season, the residues of ∑HCHs (α-HCH, β-HCH, γ-HCH and δ-HCH) and ∑DDTs (p,p′-DDT, o,p′-DDT, p,p′-DDE, p,p′-DDD) ranged from 41.7 to 290 and 4.42 to 269 ng/L in surface water, while those varied from 0.86 to 157 and 1.79 to 96.1 ng/g dw in SPM, respectively. Moreover, in surface water, the levels of HCHs and DDTs in wet season were much higher than those in dry season. The reverse was true for residues of HCHs and DDTs in SPM. Compared with the large rivers in other regions, the levels of HCHs and DDTs in the studied area ranked at high levels and the residual concentrations might cause adverse biological risk, especially for ∑HCHs during wet season. Distributions of HCHs and DDTs delineated that the input of tributaries made a significant effect on the residue of HCHs and DDTs in the mainstream. ∑HCHs in surface water were consist of 26.7 % α-HCH, 30.0 % β-HCH, 37.9 % γ-HCH and 5.45 % δ-HCH and those in SPM contained 5.16 % α-HCH, 22.1 % β-HCH, 60.5 % γ-HCH and 12.2 % δ-HCH on average. Combined with ratios of α-HCH/γ-HCH in surface water (0.70) and in SPM (0.09), the results strongly indicated that lindane was recently used or discharged in the studied area. The mean percentage of DDTs′ isomers were 28.7 % p,p′-DDT, 29.8 % o,p′-DDT, 28.1 % p,p′-DDE and 13.4 % p,p′-DDD in surface water, while those were 12.5 % p,p′-DDT, 31.8 % o,p′-DDT, 30.5 % p,p′-DDE and 25.1 % p,p′-DDD in SPM. The ratios of (DDE + DDD)/∑DDTs and o,p′-DDT/p,p′-DDT revealed that the DDTs in the studied area mainly derived from long-term weathering of technical DDTs residue and the input of dicofol.  相似文献

It has been suggested that in order to infer ecological processes from observed patterns of species abundance we need to investigate the covariance in species abundance. Consequently, an expression for the expected covariance of pin-point cover measurements of two species is developed. By comparing the observed covariance with the expected covariance we get a new type of information on the spatial arrangement of two species. Here the discrepancy between the observed and expected covariance may be thought of as a measure of the spatial configuration of the two species that may indicate underling ecological processes. The method is applied in a case study of Calluna vulgaris and Deschampsia flexuosa on dry heathland sites. The observed covariance of Calluna and Deschampsia at the level of the sites was positively and significantly correlated with the expected covariance. Negative covariance was observed on sites where both Calluna and Deschampsia had a high cover, which is in agreement with the notion that both species form distinct patches. Oppositely, at sites where both species have a low cover, we found that both the expected and observed covariance were positive. The proposed measure for the expected covariance of two species does capture information on the combined spatial configuration of the two species if the species are common. We show how this may be relevant for understanding the underlying ecological processes leading to the observed covariance.  相似文献

This study examined microplastic particles present in the benthic invertebrates Sternaspis scutata, Magelona cinta (deposit feeders) and Tellina sp. (suspension feeder) from the surface sediments of off-Kochi, southwest coast of India. The microplastic particles and thread-like fibres detected in these organisms were identified to be polystyrene by using DXR Raman microscope. Examination of the microplastic particle in Sternaspis scutata by epifluorescent microscopy showed fragmentation marks on the surface suggesting that the microplastic particle was degraded/weathered in nature. The study provides preliminary evidence of the presence of microplastics in benthic fauna from the coastal waters of India. However, further studies are required to understand the sources, distribution, fate and toxicity of the different types of microplastics in benthic invertebrates in order to identify any potential threats to higher trophic level organisms.  相似文献

The study was conducted to characterize mineralogical and elemental composition of mine tailings in order to evaluate the environmental hazards, and identify the metal accumulation potential of native plant species from São Domingos mine, one of the long-term activity mines of the Iberian Pyrite Belt dating back to pre-Roman times. The mine tailings including soils and different plant species from São Domingos were analyzed for determination of tailings characteristics and chemical element contents in tailings and plants. The large amounts of mining wastes are causing significant adverse environment impacts due to acid mine drainage production and mobilization of potentially toxic metals and metalloids in residential areas, agricultural fields, downstreams, and rivers. The typical mineralogical composition is as follows: quartz, micas, K-feldspar, olivine-group minerals, magnetite, goethite, hematite, jarosite, and sulfides. The mine tailings were highly contaminated by As, Ag, Cr, Hg, Sn, Sb, Fe, and Zn; and among them, As and Sb, main contaminants, attained the highest concentrations except Fe. Arsenic has exhibited very good correlations with Au, Fe, Sb, Se, and W; and Sb with As, Au, Fe, Se, Sn, and W in tailings. Among the all plant species, the higher concentrations of all the metals were noted in Erica andevalensis, Erica australis, Echium plantagium, and Lavandula luisierra. Considering the tolerant behavior and abundant growth, the plant species Erica australis, Erica andevalensis, Lavandula luisierra, Daphne gnidium, Rumex induratus, Ulex eriocladus, Juncus, and Genista hirsutus are of major importance for the rehabilitation and recovery of degraded São Domingos mining area.  相似文献

Merostachys riedeliana Rupr. is a native and overabundant bamboo species in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Moderate to strong allelopathic activity may be one mechanism that explains this super-dominance and the changes in structure and composition of forest areas occupied by bamboo. This study evaluated the phytotoxic effect of M. riedeliana extracts and fractions and identified their putative allelochemicals. We investigated the presence of allelochemicals in soil collected from stands occupied by M. riedeliana. Furthermore, we evaluated the putative effect of tree allelochemicals, individually and combined, on germination and growth. The aqueous extract of leaves and its ethyl acetate fraction presented the highest inhibitory effects on seed germination and seedling growth. The effect of the extracts and fractions on the target species was species-specific. Neither the individual nor the combined phenolic acids significantly inhibited seed germination; however, a pronounced growth inhibition was observed in M. bimucronata seedlings treated with vanillic acid and in E. verna and M. bimucronata seedlings treated with combined phenolic acids. Isovitexin, vitexin, isoorientin, orientin, and their O-glycoside derivatives, the lactonic dimer of the p-hydroxybenzoic acid and 3,4-methylenedioxymandelic acid were identified in the aqueous extracts and ethyl acetate fraction by Liquid Chromatography-Diode Array Dectector/Electrospray Ionization/Mass Spectrometry (LC-DAD/ESI–MS/MS). The Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (GC–MS) profile of the same extract and fraction showed the presence of benzoic, benzeneacetic, salicylic, p-hydroxybenzoic, p-hydroxyphenylacetic, vanillic, p-coumaric, protocatechuic, syringic, gallic, m-coumaric vanillylmandelic, 4-methylmandelic, 3,4-methylenedioxymandelic and trans-ferulic acids. The p-benzoic acid and the apigenin 6-C-glucoside (isovitexin) were identified in the soil extract collected from under bamboo-growing areas. Even though laboratory bioassays are not completely predictive of the allelopathic effects that occur in nature, the results of this study provide preliminary evidence of allelopathy as a possible species-specific inhibition mechanism of native species that explain the impoverishment of floristic richness and the functional groups in areas where M. riedeliana is overabundant.  相似文献

A phylogenetic analysis based on rDNA internal transcribed spacers (ITS) sequences was performed on 15 species of black corals assigned to the genera Antipathes, Stichopathes, Cirrhipathes, Rhipidipathes, Antipathella, Myriopathes and Cupressopathes recorded from the Messina Strait (Mediterranean Sea) and the Bunaken Marine Park (Celebes Sea, Indonesia). The phylogenetic analysis shows that the examined species are grouped in two main branches corresponding to the families Antipathidae-Aphanipathidae and Myriopathidae. While among the Myriopathidae species there is a very small genetic distance, the Antipathidae-Aphanipathidae clade shows a high degree of divergence between different genera. According to this study, the taxon Antipathes? sp. 3 characterised by a bush-like corallum without a well-defined axis, probably belongs to a new undescribed genus of the family Antipathidae.  相似文献

Fish faunas were sampled seasonally using a large and a small beam trawl in three seagrass habitats comprising predominantly Amphibolis griffithii or Posidonia sinuosa or Posidonia coriacea, which differ in seagrass and meadow structure. Amphibolis griffithii and P. sinuosa both produce a relatively dense leaf canopy, but the former exhibits a distinct architecture, with the leaf canopy overlying relatively open spaces surrounding woody stems, compared to the uniformly dense blade-like leaves of P. sinuosa which emerge directly from the sediment. In comparison, P. coriacea provides a landscape of patchy seagrass amongst areas of bare sand. Since the latter seagrass habitat contains large areas of sand, fish were also sampled in adjacent unvegetated areas. The number of species and density of fish were greater (P<0.05) in P. sinuosa than in either A. griffithii or P. coriacea. The mean number of species caught using the large trawl ranged from 16 to 24 in the first of these habitats compared to 14–21 and 9–15 in the last two habitats, respectively, and the mean densities ranged between 78 and 291 fish 1000 m?2 in P. sinuosa compared to 31–59 fish 1000 m?2 in A. griffithii and 31–59 fish 1000 m?2 in P. coriacea. The biomass of fish was greater (P<0.05) in both P. sinuosa and A. griffithii than in P. coriacea (4.2–5.3 kg and 3.3–6.2 kg versus 0.7–1.9 kg 1000 m?2, respectively). Furthermore, the size-structure of fish differed among these habitats, where the median weight of fish was 72.1 g in A. griffithii, compared to 7.5 g and 19.8 g in P. sinuosa and P. coriacea, respectively. Ordination and ANOSIM demonstrated that the species-composition differed markedly among the three seagrass habitats (P<0.001), suggesting that fish species display a distinct preference for particular seagrasses characterised by different architecture. Differences in species-composition among the seagrass habitats partly reflected the size-composition of fish in each habitat. The open space below the canopy of A. griffthii is likely to allow larger fish to occupy this habitat, whereas only small fish would be able to penetrate the dense foliage of P. sinuosa. Differences in species- and size-composition of fish among these habitats may be the result of settlement-sized larvae discriminating between particular seagrass and meadow structures, or fish being subject to different levels of predation and/or accessibility to food or space. The species-composition in P. coriacea was highly dispersed and did not differ from that of unvegetated areas. While several species were associated with both P. coriacea and bare-sand habitats, some species did display a high affinity with the seagrass P. coriacea. This may reflect an association with the sparse and narrower leaves of this seagrass or with the patchy occurrence of the seagrass Heterozostera tasmanica, which commonly occurs as an understorey in this habitat.  相似文献

During four summer seasons mesozooplankton community composition and structure in relation to water mass distribution were investigated along a 735-km transect running across the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) to the north-west of the island of South Georgia, Southern Ocean. Samples were obtained each year during December–January from the top 200 m of the water column at 22 stations spaced 35 km apart. Cluster analysis revealed four station groupings that were geographically consistent with the different water masses identified on the basis of temperature and salinity properties along the transect. A Sub-Antarctic Zone (SAZ) community characterised by low overall plankton abundance was present at the northernmost end of the transect on three of the four cruises, separated from a Polar Frontal Zone (PFZ) community by the Sub-Antarctic Front (SAF). The PFZ community lay between the SAF and the Polar Front (PF) and was characterised by highest overall abundance and little interannual variability. Two Antarctic Zone (AAZ) communities were found south of the PF that, although taxonomically similar, differed in overall abundance. Although there were significant differences in nutrients (e.g. silicate) and phytoplankton (Chl a) between the different water masses, these factors only weakly correlated with plankton community structure. Copepods were the largest contributors to total abundance within all station groupings (median percentage 83–90% of total) and pteropods were also proportionately abundant in the PFZ (11%). With the exception of pteropods (≤11%) and ostracods (≤3%) all other non-copepod taxa contributed <1% to total abundance. All station groups were characterised by varying proportions of a relatively small subset of species, many of which were present throughout the transect, for example, Oithona similis, Ctenocalanus spp., Euchaeta antarctica, and Rhincalanus gigas. Others were particularly characteristic of different station groups, thus Neocalanus tonsus, Clausocalanus ingens, and Calocalanus spp. were characteristic of the SAZ with few in the PFZ and none in the AAZ. Microcalanus pygmaeus was particularly abundant in the AAZ compared to other regions, as was the polychaete, Pelagobia longicirrata. Other taxa, although widespread, tended to be typical of particular water masses, for example, Calanus simillimus and Limacina helicina in the PFZ, Calanoides acutus, appendicularians and P. longicirrata in the AAZ, and ostracods and chaetognaths in the SAZ. The close physical and biological coupling observed across the ACC confirms the frontal zones and particularly the PF as features across which community properties change in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean.  相似文献

Background

Identifying typical odor-causing compounds is essential for odor problem control in drinking water. In this study, aiming at a major water source reservoir in hot and humid areas in southern China, which encountered seasonable odor problems in recent years, an integrated approach including comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC?×?GC–TOFMS), flavor profile analysis (FPA) and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was adopted to investigate the odor occurrence.

Results

The results indicated that earthy–musty odor is blamed to the seasonable odor problems, and it is consistent with the complaints results from consumers. Fifty-four typical odor compounds were investigated in the reservoir and twelve were detected, of which, 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) was significantly increased during the odor event. Pseudanabaena sp. is the dominant species in the reservoir, which can be further represented by the number of mic gene with qPCR method (R2?=?0.746, P?<?0.001). Oxygen consumption (CODMn) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) have great influence on growth of Pseudanabaena sp., and the release of 2-MIB from the Pseudanabaena sp. cells is affected by temperature and light.

Conclusion

Our findings demonstrated that 2-MIB is the odor-caused substance in the reservoir and Pseudanabaena sp. is the main 2-MIB producer, which was confirmed as a benthic filamentous algae. Due to CODMn and DOC have great influence on Pseudanabaena sp. growth, further measures to reduce the CODMn and DOC input should be performed. We also demonstrated that the 2-MIB release is affected by temperature and light. The risk of sudden increase of 2-MIB will be reduced by raising the depth of water in the reservoir. Our study will improve the understanding of T&O problems in this city, as well as in other hot and humid area.

The residual levels of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were examined in soils covering five types of land use along a salinity gradient on the Yellow River Delta. The most prominent OCPs were dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (∑DDT, arithmetic mean = 5.11 μg kg?1), hexachlorocyclohexane (∑HCH, 1.69 μg kg?1) and ∑endosulfan (10.4 μg kg?1). The spatial variability of OCPs composition shifted from γ-HCH and o,p′-DDT dominated pesticides in coastal soils to p,p′-DDE dominated pesticides in inland soils. In different land-use types, the percentages of β-HCH and p,p′-DDE are characterized by more recalcitrant components in decreasing order of vegetable fields, cereal fields, cotton fields, wetlands and tidal flats with increasing soil salinity. However, the less recalcitrant components, γ-HCH and o,p′-DDT, showed an opposite trend. Endosulfan sulfate predominated in all land-use types. Residual levels of β-HCH were affected by soil organic matter. The correlations between γ-HCH and clay content and between p,p′-DDE, o,p′-DDT and salinity might associate with the influence of sediment cotransport by the Yellow River and the density of anthropogenic activities in coastal region. Depth distribution of the OCPs in typical soil profiles also implied that local historical usage and sediment transport by the Yellow River both affected the OCPs residual in this region.  相似文献

With the rapid economic development and urbanization, there would be severe air pollution. The path analysis method was employed to investigate the specific effects of Industrial Gross Domestic Product (IGDP), Urbanization Rate (UR), Environmental Investment (EI), and Coal Consumption (CC) on Industrial SO2 Emissions (ISE) and Industrial Dust Emissions (IDE). The results shown that (1) IGDP is the main reason for the increase in ISE and IDE, with the direct positive influence more than 20% and a total contribution of more than 35%, and the combined effects of UR can reduce air pollutants emission considerably, especially in ISE. (2) The effects of EI and CC on ISE could be ignored, given that their contributions comprised <?10%. Meanwhile, the contribution of EI to IDE was only 8.92%. For one reason, EI is underfunded which the percentage of Gross Domestic Product was <?2%.  相似文献

The present study compared population genetic structure of two northern hemisphere polychaetes, Neanthes virens (Sars, 1835) and Hediste diversicolor (O.F. Müller, 1776), with different life-history traits. N. virens has a pelagic larval phase that may last as long as 9 days, while H. diversicolor broods its offspring. It was predicted that N. virens populations, especially over relatively short geographic distances, would be more genetically similar than H. diversicolor populations. Sequence data were obtained for two mitochondrial genes, cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) and cytochrome b (cyt b). The COI gene showed no variation in 16 N. virens individuals from 12 locations, and it was not examined in H. diversicolor. The nucleotide sequence of the cyt b gene was examined in 93 N. virens individuals collected in 1992, 1999, and 2000 from 12 localities throughout its range (North America, Europe, Japan) and from 33 H. diversicolor individuals collected in 1999 and 2001 from one locality in eastern Canada and two localities in France (Roscoff and Marseille). In N. virens, one cyt b haplotype was shared by 89% (83 out of 93) and only two other haplotypes were found. Significant population structure was observed in H. diversicolor. In the 33 sequences compared, 18.9% of sites were polymorphic and 12 haplotypes were identified. There were two haplotypes in the Canadian population, three in the Marseille samples, and seven in the Roscoff samples, and no haplotype was found in common between any two sites. These results show that widely separated H. diversicolor populations are strongly differentiated at the cyt b locus. The most plausible interpretation for the low variation at the COI and cyt b loci in N. virens, and for the lack of variation at allozyme loci (based on an initial survey of a smaller subset of populations), is that this species has experienced a drastic bottleneck and that a few remaining lineages recolonized its entire range.  相似文献

Metal releases from the Tri-State Mining District (TSMD) that is located in southwestern Missouri, southeastern Kansas, and northeastern Oklahoma, have contaminated floodplain soils within the Neosho and Spring river watersheds of the Grand Lake watershed. Since the Oklahoma portion of the watershed lies within ten tribal jurisdictions, the potential accumulation of metals within plant species that are gathered and consumed by tribal members, as well as the resulting metal exposure risks to tribal human health, was a warranted concern for further investigation. Within this study, a total of 36 plant species that are commonly consumed by tribes were collected from floodplain areas that were previously demonstrated to have elevated soil metal concentrations relative to reference sites. A significant, positive correlation was shown for metal concentrations in plant tissues versus soil (n = 258; Cd: R = 0.72, p = 0.00; Pb: R = 0.52, p = 0.00; and Zn: R = 0.70, p = 0.00). Additionally, a significant difference in metal concentration distributions existed between reference and impacted plant samples (n = 210, p = 0.00 for all metals). These results proved that floodplain soils are a major contamination pathway for metal accumulation within plants, and the source of metal contamination is the result of mining releases from the TSMD. Metal accumulation within plants was found to vary according to specific metal and plant species. The lowest dietary exposure out of all plant organs sampled were associated with fruit, whereas the highest was associated with roots, stem/leaves, and low-lying leafy greens. Metals in plants were compared to weekly dietary intake limits established by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives. Based on specific serving sizes established within this study for tribal children and adults, many plant species had sufficient concentrations to warrant tribal consumption restrictions within the floodplains of Elm Creek, Grand Lake, Lost Creek, Spring River, and Tar Creek. Importantly, these results highlighted the necessity for the issuance of plant consumption advisories for tribal communities in the watershed. A consumption restriction guide on the number of allowable servings of each species per week at specific streams was developed within this study for tribal children and adults. Results also demonstrated that soil metal concentrations do not need to be exceptionally elevated relative to reference sites in order for plants to accumulate sufficient metal concentrations to exceed dietary limits for one serving. Therefore, the exposure risk associated with the consumption of plants cannot be accurately predicted solely from metal concentrations within soils, but must be based on metal concentrations within specific plant tissues on a site-by-site basis. A weekly consumption scenario was created within this study in order to better understand the potential metal dietary exposures to child and adult tribal members who consume multiple servings of multiple plant species per day, as well as benthic invertebrates and fish from the watershed. These findings demonstrated that plants pose a greater consumption exposure risk for tribal members than benthic invertebrates or fish. Therefore, without the consideration of exposure risks associated with the consumption of plants within future human health risk assessments, tribal health risks will be severely underestimated.  相似文献

The feasibility of using Phragmites australis-JS45 system in removing nitrobenzene from sediments was conducted. However, it was observed that nitrobenzene degraded rapidly and was removed completely within 20 days in native sediments, raising the possibility that indigenous microorganisms may play important roles in nitrobenzene degradation. Consequently, this study aimed to verify this possibility and investigate the potential nitrobenzene degraders among indigenous microorganisms in sediments. The abundance of inoculated strain JS45 and indigenous bacteria in sediments was quantified using real-time polymerase chain reaction. Furthermore, community structure of the indigenous bacteria was analyzed through high throughput sequencing based on Illumina MiSeq platform. The results showed that indigenous bacteria in native sediments were abundant, approximately 1014 CFU/g dry weight, which is about six orders of magnitude higher than that in fertile soils. In addition, the levels of indigenous Proteobacteria (Acinetobacter, Comamonadaceae_ uncultured, Pseudomonas, and Thauera) and Firmicutes (Clostridium, Sporacetigenium, Fusibacter, Youngiibacter, and Trichococcus) increased significantly during nitrobenzene removal. Their quantities sharply decreased after nitrobenzene was removed completely, except for Pseudomonas and Thauera. Based on the results, it can be concluded that indigenous microorganisms including Proteobacteria and Firmicutes can have great potential for removing nitrobenzene from sediments. Although P. australis - JS45 system was set up in an attempt to eliminate nitrobenzene from sediments, and the system did not meet the expectation. The findings still provide valuable information on enhancing nitrobenzene removal by optimizing the sediment conditions for better growth of indigenous Proteobacteria and Firmicutes.

This paper investigates flows around a free surface piercing cylinder with Froude number F > 0.5 and Reynolds number around Re = 50,000. The aim of this work is to gain a better understanding of the flow behaviour in environmental systems such as fishways. The advances are based upon experimental and numerical results. Several flow discharges and slopes are tested to obtain both subcritical and supercritical flows. The drag force exerted on the cylinder is measured with the help of a torque gauge while the velocity field is obtained using particle velocimetry. For the numerical part, two URANS turbulence models are tested, the k-\(\omega\) SST and the RNG k-\(\varepsilon\) models using the OpenFOAM software suite for subcritical cases, and then compared with the corresponding experimental results. With fishways applications in mind, the changes in drag coefficient \(C_d\) versus Froude number and water depth are studied and experimental correlations proposed. We conclude that the most suitable URANS turbulence model for reproducing this kind of flow is the k-\(\omega\) SST model.  相似文献

The fate of pelagic diatoms in marine coastal aphotic sediments was investigated from sediment profiles in western Scandinavian waters. We used three independent methods to estimate pigment pools in the sediment: (1) fluorometry, (2) high-performance liquid chromatography and (3) pigments estimated from germinable diatom cells, using the dilution extinction method. A strong positive relationship with an intercept close to zero was observed between fucoxanthin, a marker of diatoms, and chlorophyll a. The fucoxanthin/chl a ratio was on average 1.05, which was similar to monocultures of dominating diatom taxa, indicating that sedimentary chl a was to a large extent of diatom origin. Chl a and fucoxanthin correlated significantly and positively with, and where within the same order of magnitude as, corresponding substances predicted from live diatom cell numbers obtained with the dilution extinction method. This indicates that a major part of surficial sediment chl a was bound in live cells of pelagic diatoms. There was a consistent change in viable cells with sediment depth and with timing of dominating taxa, with the non-spore-forming Skeletonema costatum dominating in the surface sediment in March and May, while the spore forming Chaetoceros spp. dominated deep in the sediment and during periods outside of the spring bloom (February and August). This indicates that chl a is bound in several different cell pools with different degradation rates, depending on diatom taxonomy. Thus, diatoms originating predominantly from the spring bloom may provide an important direct link in the pelagic–benthic coupling in this area.  相似文献

Spatial patterns and temporal succession in soft-bottom macroinvertebrate assemblages are described for an area of the southern San Diego shelf which is influenced by both anthropogenic and natural events. The study transect covered 19 km along the 60 m-depth contour and spanned the terminus of the Point Loma wastewater outfall (32°40N; 117°17W). Ordination and classification analyses revealed that eight major benthic assemblages occurred in the study area from 1986–1990. These analyses further indicated that: (1) the impact of wastewater discharge on the benthos was asymmetric about the outfall, and (2) primary and secondary impact zones existed within the outfall footprint. The primary impact extended only 0.5 km south, but usually up to 1 km north, of the point of discharge, reflecting the prevailing northerly flow of currents along the San Diego coast. Stations within the primary impact zone usually supported similar faunal assemblages at any point in time. A lessened, or secondary, impact was apparent at stations 1 to 2 km south and 2 km north of the outfall. The two stations 9 km to the north appeared to be outside the outfall footprint. Assemblages in the three zones did not differ greatly in species composition, but did differ with respect to organismal density, relative abundances (dominance hierarchy) of component species, and temporal persistence. Biostimulation of the benthos, manifest as increased species richness and organismal abundance, was apparent in the primary impact zone from 1986–1988, although dominance was relatively low. Dominance increased at these sites during 1989 and 1990 due to large increases in populations of a few small species, such as the polychaete Myriochele sp. M and the ostracod Euphilomedes carcharodonta. Biomass was slightly elevated in the primary impact zone during 1986–1987; however, this trend was not sustained. Communities within the outfall footprint were much less persistent over time than those beyond it. The observed shifts in benthic assemblages within the outfall footprint corresponded to natural oceanographic cycles (i.e., the transition from El Niño to La Niña conditions) and anthropogenic changes (i.e., changes in wastewater output). These observations suggest that the Point Loma outfall has a localized effect on the stability of infaunal communities. Possible destabilization mechanisms are explored. Finally, comparisons with pre-discharge data taken during 1956–1957 revealed that about half of the species present prior to construction of the outfall were still common in 1990, after 27 yr of wastewater discharge, although large increases in species diversity and abundance seem to have occurred at all stations.  相似文献

The taxonomy of Crepidula has been based principally on shell morphology, but shell characteristics in this genus may be strongly influenced by the substrates they inhabit and are thus of limited use in classification. Four species in this genus are currently recognized from the Chilean coast, of which two, Crepidula dilatata and C. fecunda, are sympatric. These species are morphologically cryptic and differ only in their larval development: C. dilatata has indirect development with a planktonic phase, and C. fecunda direct development within egg capsules. The other two species, C. coquimbensis and C. philippiana, are species that occur within gastropod shells inhabited by hermit crabs and differ from the other species in internal morphology of the shell, developmental features, and geographic distribution. Analyses of nine morphological characters, eight developmental characters, and 26 enzymatic loci were carried out on four Crepidula populations in the Coquimbo region of northern Chile. Four populations of Crepidula were identified based on morphological, developmental, and protein electrophoresis features. Our results suggest the presence of C. coquimbensis plus three morphologically cryptic species including C. dilatata, C. fecunda, and a new previously unrecognized cryptic species. All four populations showed differences in larval development pattern. C. fecunda have indirect development, with free-swimming larvae. The remaining three species have intracapsular metamorphosis, but different modes of larval nutrition. C. dilatata have nurse eggs that are consumed by mechanical destruction; C. coquimbensis engulf nutritional embryos; and the new species eat nutritive embryos by rotation. Protein electrophoresis data support the specific condition of each group with different larval development and endorse the use of developmental differences in taxonomy of Crepidula. Genetic distance shows that C. dilatata and C. fecunda are closely related, and that C. coquimbensis is closer to them than to the new cryptic species.  相似文献

A 3D hydrodynamic model has been applied to the Curonian Lagoon to study the pollution impact of E. coli on a new beach that might be opened in the lagoon. Through a field survey the E. coli inputs were measured and then used in the numerical model, and through laboratory experiments the decay rate of E. coli was established. The model has been calibrated and validated for the year 2015, and several scenarios have been studied, such as sewage system breakdown, severe weather conditions or high river loads. The model has then been run for a period of 12 years to obtain a robust statistics for the pollution on the planned beach. Results show that the decay rate of E. coli is between 0.55 days and 2.3 days and the modeled decay times are compatible with these numbers. The only scenario that would create a risk for the bathing waters of the beach is a breakdown of the sewage system on the Curonian Spit. In this case the hours (and days) over legally allowable bathing threshold were computed in order to estimate the number of days the beach could be closed. These results have been confirmed by the 12 year simulations. With an influence map analysis the two most critical sewage systems could be identified.  相似文献
