The sexually produced young of the externally brooding actinian Epiactis prolifera Verrill, 1869 are attached to the parent's column just above the base. A transitory brood groove may be formed around the limbus when the parent contracts. In the population studied on the coast of Sonoma County, California, USA, from 27 to 49% of the adult anemones were brooding at any time, the proportion being inversely related to seawater temperature and directly related to size of the anemones. A brood usually consisted of young of various sizes. Overall, number of young being brooded was directly related to parent size and inversely related to size of the brooded juveniles. The growth rate of juvenile anemones was inferred to average about a millimeter in pedal disc diameter per month. Juveniles dislodged from the parent when smaller than 4 mm in basal diameter apparently cannot survive in the intertidal zone. Juveniles which successfully make the transition to adulthood have, therefore, been brooded for at least 3 months. Fewer than 50% of the smallest juveniles survived to a size at which they could live independently. The transition to adulthood was accompanied by a mortality of 80%. Ophiomyxa brevirima is a direct-developing species of brittle-star found around the coast of New Zealand. The mode of reproduction of this ophiuroid was studied using isozyme electrophoresis of mother and brooded offspring. Multi-locus assessment of the genotypes of 35 adult females and their brooded offspring was undertaken. A minimum of 45% of broods assessed showed evidence of amictic reproduction, with all offspring in these broods possessing genotypes that were identical to the genotype of their heterozygous mother. In most other broods there was evidence of segregation. These observations are interpreted as evidence of both sexual and asexual reproduction in this ophiuroid species. Electrophoresis was used to provide genetic evidence of the mode of production of brooded planulae in each of four species of scleractinian coral collected from the central region of the Great Barrier Reef during September, October and November 1984. Comparisons were made of the multi-locus genotypes of planulae and their broodparents for two ahermatypic (non zooxanthellate) species,Tubastraea diaphana andT. coccinea and two hermatypic (zooxanthellate) species,Acropora palifera andSeriatopora hystrix. For both ahermatypic species, all planulae were found to be genetically identical to their broodparents, including 91 planulae which were heterozygous for at least one locus. These results are consistent with asexual (ameiotic) reproduction. In contrast, non-parental genotypes were detected in the majority of hermatypic broods, which is consistent with expectations for sexual reproduction with at least some outcrossing. These data confirmed that brooded planulae may be produced both sexually and asexually and countered the suggestion that electrophoretic studies of hermatypic corals may be weakened by the contaminating effect of the enzymes of their symbiotic xooxanthellae.Contribution No. 306 of the Australian Institute of Marine Science  相似文献

The intertidal anemone Actinia tenebrosa is viviparous. An electrophoretic study of 3 polymorphic enzymes in Western Australian populations has confirmed genetic identity of adults and their brood young, indicating asexual reproduction. The population effects of this clonal reproduction are seen as linkage disequilibrium and departures from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium within populations, and large differences between populations. The data also suggest occasional sexual reproduction, and the likelihood of a mixture of reproductive modes in this species.  相似文献

 New information on the brooding reproduction of Amphiura carchara, and previous studies of several deep-sea congeners, contradict the prevailing notion that direct development is exceptional among deep-sea echinoderms. Over 500 specimens of A. carchara from 2,850 to 4,100-m depths off the coast of California, USA, were studied. The species was found to be gonochoric, although most brooding species of ophiuroids are hermaphroditic. Females each brooded up to 72 embryos at a time, with up to 10 in a single bursa. The embryos of individual adults were often at different stages of development, but those brooded in a single bursa tended to be at the same stage. Thus, the species has characteristics that breach the distinctions between sequential and simultaneous brooding exhibited by shallow-water ophiuroids. The embryos developed from yolky eggs that are large for an ophiuroid, with the mean largest oocytes 0.45 mm, and ranging to 1.28 mm in diameter. Almost all late-stage embryos were positioned with their mouth and arms pressed against the wall of the bursa, possibly to facilitate the uptake of nutrients from the parent. Thus, A. carchara may be matrotrophic. The largest embryos examined had a rudimentary disk skeleton, and arms with four joints and a terminal plate. Emerging juveniles probably differ in disk diameter. The species appears to brood year round, although differences in gonad size, the incidence of brooding, and the relative numbers of early developmental stages in summer and winter samples indicated that there are seasonal trends in reproduction. Four morphologically similar species in the sea anemone genus Epiactis exhibit overlapping distributions on the Pacific coast of North America; E. prolifera, E. lisbethae, E. ritteri and E. fernaldi. All brood their offspring up to the juvenile stage, but each has a different combination of internal versus external brooding and hermaphroditism versus gonochory (separate sexes). Specimens were collected from sites ranging from British Columbia to southern California between December 1988 and July 1992. Mating systems were inferred from genetic comparisons of mothers and offspring histological analyses of sex expression and observations on brooding and spawning behavior. Allozyme and multilocus DNA fingerprint analyses of the gynodioecious hermaphrodite E. prolifera showed that offspring were all identical to their mothers, a result consistent with either asexual reproduction, self-fertilization or extreme biparental inbreeding. In the gonochore E. lisbethae, mothers and offspring were also electrophoretically identical, but variation in DNA fingerprints indicated cross-fertilization. Similar DNA fingerprint differences between mother and offspring in the gonochore E. ritteri implied that cross-fertilization also occurs in this species. No mother-offspring comparisons were performed on E. fernaldi, as this species was not observed brooding offspring during this study. Although incomplete, the results of this study increase our knowledge of the very unusual combination of reproductive modes in the genus Epiactis, and argue for further investigations of the evolution and genetic consequences of mating systems in these species.  相似文献

The genotypic compositions of two populations of the brooding coral, Pocillopora damicornis, were studied by exhaustive sampling of adult colonies on a fine scale in southern Taiwan. In addition, 100 larvae were randomly selected among more than 1,000 brooded larvae collected from a single broodparent within each population. Using 7 polymorphic microsatellite markers, both populations were found to be highly clonal, and 7 clonal lineages were characterized. One clonal lineage (C1) dominated both study areas and comprises 54.9% of all colonies sampled, while any of the other 6 clonal lineages represented no more than 5%. Among the 100 larvae randomly selected for genotyping from each broodparent, the extent of clonal reproduction was high, and only 29 and 6 larvae, respectively, were found to be genotypically different from their broodparent. Among the 35 genotypically distinct larvae, 33 were thought to be derived from sexual reproduction, and 2 were assumed to be clonal propagules that had undergone somatic mutations. Two genotypically identical larvae were also found in one of the 2 sexually derived larva arrays, indicating the possible existence of polyembryony. The high proportions of clonality in both adult colonies and brooded larvae suggest that asexually produced larvae might significantly contribute to the recruitment of local populations. The dense clonal population of P. damicornis in the study area favors the quick recolonization view of clonal propagules after disturbances.  相似文献

The genetic relationships between morphologically indistinguishable marine and brackish populations of Syllis gracilis Grube, 1840 (Polychaeta: Syllidae) were studied by means of allozyme electrophoresis. Samples of S. gracilis from marine coastal and brackish-water habitats were examined for variation at 13 presumptive loci. In addition, a sample of the closely related species S. prolifera (Krohn, 1852) was analysed. Five loci were multiallelic in at least one population of S. gracilis and eight loci in S. prolifera. Low to moderate levels of within-population genetic variability were found, with average expected heterozygosity values ranging from H = 0.068 (±0.043 SE) to 0.187 (±0.069 SE) in the populations of S. gracilis; higher values were found in S. prolifera (H = 0.325 ± 0.076). The presence of various private alleles indicated a marked genetic divergence among populations of S. gracilis, with Nei's genetic distances ranging from D = 0.000 to 0.833 and a highly significant F ST value. Furthermore, evidence for strong genetic heterogeneity between two sympatric marine populations was found. UPGMA cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling pointed out a clear genetic divergence between brackish and marine populations. At least two genetically divergent entities occurred in marine and brackish habitats. This could be due to local adaptation of individuals coming from marine populations to brackish habitats, but more presumably to the occurrence of a species complex within S. gracilis. Allozyme electrophoresis at five loci was used to clarify the species status of two morphs of the scleractinian coral Montipora digitata (Dana, 1846), using specimens collected from three locations off the Queensland coast between October 1991 and April 1993. The two morphs, occurring sympatrically, were distinguished by one fixed gene difference at Locus LT-2 and frequency differences at three other loci, indicating reproductive isolation between them. Populations of both morphs were generally in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, suggesting that sexual reproduction does occur. Despite sampling designed to reduce the chance of collecting clonemates, the genetic diversity ratio (G O:GE) indicated that asexual reproduction also occurs. This is in agreement with the known modes of reproduction for this species. There was significant genetic differentiation between populations of one of the morphs of M. digitata. This could have been influenced by greater degrees of asexual reproduction in this morph, selection within sites, or variation in larval survival and recruitment patterns. Relatively low F st (differentiation among populations) values found for a broadcast spawning species during this study are in accordance with the hypothesis that brooded planulae are adapted for rapid settlement, whereas planulae produced by broadcast spawners are adapted for widespread dispersal.  相似文献

Geographic populations of the anemonefish Amphiprion clarkii (Bennett) from 6 widely separated locations off the coast of southern Japan are morphologically different, exhibiting (1) latitudinal clinal patterns in color pattern and meristics and (2) degrees of genetic differentiation. Electrophoretic examination of 7 polymorphic loci (95% level) among 6 populations collected between July 1979 and January 1980 revealed an average genetic distance value of 0.008. Significance was demonstrated for 39 out of 105 (37%) tests of heterogeneity. Averaged over the 6 populations, the percentage of polymorphic loci ( 0.95) was 24.6% and the proportion of heterozygous loci per individual ( ) was 0.0613. The results indicate that genetic clines are absent and suggest that the morphological variation may not be genetic. Relative isolation of genetic populations may be maintained by (1) localized larval dispersal resulting from a relatively short larval stage, and (2) current gyres tending to trap larvae, increasing the return of juveniles to their adult coastal habitat. The reproductive ecology of a small intertidal clam was studied for two years (September 1980-November 1982) at two mid-intertidal sites on the northern shore of Monterey Bay, California. Lasaea subviridis is hermaphroditic and incubatory; the young are released as juveniles. Brooding adults are found throughout the year. All embryos in a clam are at the same stage of development, but the number and stage of embryos varies among clams at any one time. Individuals are iteroparous and produce small numbers of oocytes and sperms simultaneously. All stages of gonad development are found in different individuals at any one time. There was no evidence of seasonality. Young reared in the laboratory after being dissected from the parent reached brooding size (shell length of 1.7 mm) within 6 mo. Laboratory experiments indicated that juveniles crawl away soon after release from the parent. These reproductive characteristics may contribute to this taxon's ability to colonize new environments rapidly.  相似文献

Populations of the sea anemone Metridium senile (L.) were sampled from several locations in eastern North America in two series, one collected from 1977–1979 and the other from 1981–1985. Fourteen populations were sampled twice at one- to six-year intervals. Samples were analyzed for temporal differences in genetic composition at both the single locus and multiple locus levels. Overall patterns of geographic variation in allele frequency did not change between series. Regressions describing clines did not differ significantly, and loci not showing clinal variation in the first series remained similar in the second. Analysis of populations sampled twice produced no systematic evidence of change in allele frequency with time for any of four polymorphic loci. Comparisons with computer simulations of repeated sampling of multiple locus genotypes from panmictic populations with free recombination also revealed little temporal change at this level. One population showed possible evidence of recruitment from a different gene pool. Other significant departures from expectations reflected more reproducibility of genotype distributions between samples than expected for sexual populations. This excess stability likely results jointly from clonal reproduction and little sexual recruitment. Despite these indications of genetic stability in adult populations, newly settled juveniles were genetically different from resistant adults in one population, demonstrating the potential for genetic change by immigration. Successful sexual recruitment seems to be rare, even though larvae regularly settle from the plankton. Although interpretation of these results is somewhat limited by lack of knowledge of longevities and generation times, to the extent that they reflect longer-term trends, they suggest that at least some of the observed patterns of geographic variation in allele frequency probably result from natural selection.  相似文献

Summary The grey-crowned babbler, Pomastostomus temporalis, is a non-migratory species with delayed breeding and prolonged association of young with siblings and parents. Since these conditions are conducive to incestuous matings, we have studied allozymic variation in a population in southeastern Queensland, to evaluate the possibility of close inbreeding. Eight of 20 loci tested were polymorphic, with an average proportion of heterozygous loci individual of 9.4%. No deficiency of heterozygotes was found, indicating the absence of detectable inbreeding. Some mechanism that prevents inbreeding seems to be present.  相似文献

Specimens of the deep-sea brittle-star Ophiomusium lymani were collected from six sites in the Rockall Trough (northeast Atlantic_. Four monomorphic and four polymorphic loci were detected, with up to 75 individuals screened at any one locus. The results showed little difference in allele frequencies between sites and, consequently, estimates of genetic identity indicated no significant genetic differentiation between the populations sampled. Deficits of heterozygotes were observed at all polymorphic loci, but the deficiencies were only significant at the phosphoglucose isomerase locus from two locations. The deficit of heterozygotes was not the same across loci, suggesting that inbreeding is not the cause of the excess homozygosity. No relationship between heterozygosity and depth was observed.  相似文献

Planktonic populations of the calanoid copepod Labidocera aestiva show significant biochemical genetic heterogeneity along the Atlantic coast of the USA. In summer, 1981, copepods were collected by surface tows at Beaufort Inlet, North Carolina; Fort Pierce Inlet, Florida; and Vineyard Sound, Massachusetts. Genetic variation within each population and genetic differentiation among the three populations were studied by micro-acrylamide gel electrophoresis of six loci encoding four enzymes. All six enzyme loci were polymorphic when all populations were considered together, but the North Carolina population was monomorphic at two loci. High genetic variability was indicated by the following: (1) the number of alleles per locus averaged over all loci was 2.57±0.26 SD; (2) the average proportion of loci for which the frequency of the most common allele was not greater than 0.95 was 0.78±0.10; (3) the frequency of heterozygous individuals was 0.25±0.07. Genetic differentiation among population samples in the three regions was demonstrated in several ways: allele frequencies at one aminopeptidase-I locus, Lap-1, differed significantly among samples of the three populations, and there were unique alleles of high frequency at this locus in two population samples. Values of the statistic of genetic distance (D) averaged 0.20±0.08 for pairwise comparisons between all samples. Compared to expected heterozygosity if individuals across the entire range sampled mated at random, there were highly significant heterozygote deficiencies at five of the six loci. Genetic differentiation of populations of L. aestiva may result from (1) differential selection on populations in the three regions, or (2) restricted gene flow between the populations. Genetic differentiation and genetic variability of sporophytic and gametophytic populations of Gelidium arbuscula (Bory) from three localities sampled in 1989 and 1990 in the Canary Islands (Spain) were examined by isozyme electrophoresis. Twenty-three to 29 putative alleles corresponding to 22 gene loci, were compared. High deviations in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, and significant differences between allelic frequencies of sporophytic and gametophytic subpopulations at the same locality were found, suggesting a predominant asexual reproduction of G. arbuscula. The genetic variability (percentage of polymorphic loci, mean number of alleles per locus and average gene diversity) of haploid subpopulations was lower than that of diploid subpopulations at all three localities, being the lowest described for seaweeds. No correlation between genetic and geographical distance was found. The high genetic differentiation coefficient between all subpopulations suggests a very reduced genetic flow between subpopulations of the same and of different localities. These results suggest that the genetic structure of the populations of G. arbuscula from the Canary Islands is due to a founder-effect combined with a predominance of asexual reproduction. This is the first report comparing allelic frequencies between sporophytic and gametophytic subpopulations of seaweeds.  相似文献

There are few data on the reproductive biology of coral species living in temperate zones, particularly in the Mediterranean Sea. Leptopsammia pruvoti is a solitary coral that is commonly found in sea caves and under overhangs throughout the Mediterranean basin and along European coasts from Portugal to southern England. In this paper, we describe its annual reproductive cycle in the eastern Ligurian Sea near the city of Leghorn (Tuscany, Italy). Polyps were sexually mature at 3 mm in length (maximum diameter of the oral disc), were dioecious with a sex ratio of 1:1, and brooded their larvae. The maturation of spermaries took 12 months and oocytes 24 months. The rate of gonad development increased significantly from November to January, fertilization occurred from January to April and planulation during May and June. Seasonal variations in water temperature and photoperiod may have played an important role in regulating reproductive events. The amount of energy devoted to male gametogenesis (quantified by gonad index) was significantly higher in the sex separated species L. pruvoti than in the hermaphroditic dendrophylliid Balanophyllia europaea, whose reproduction has been studied in a previous work. We hypothesize that this difference is due to the contrasting sexuality or fertilization biology of these two species (cross-fertilization in the sex separated L. pruvoti versus possibly self-fertilization in the hermaphroditic B. europaea). Greater male sexual allocation in reproductive strategies characterized by dioecism or cross-fertilization when compared to those characterized by hermaphroditism or self-fertilization is common in plant mating systems. In relation to other solitary dendrophylliids, L. pruvoti presents an ‘r’-reproductive strategy.  相似文献

Size-frequency distributions from subtidal populations of Terebratella inconspicua (Sowerby, 1846) consistently display prominent modes at 18 to 22 mm shell length, representing many years accumulation of non-growing adults. In addition, these distributions contain seasonally variable modes made up of new recruits which are present in very high numbers towards the end of the breeding season, but are reduced to very low numbers by the end of their first year of life. Growth of recruits follows a sigmoid curve with considerable variability between individuals. Some adults survive at least 14 years. Females are 2 years old before they breed. Larvae are brooded internally by the parent and spawned in autumn and spring. The density of recruitment is positively correlated with the density of residents. Larvae commonly settle on the shells of large brachiopods; these recruits can survive to breed, but their survivorship as adults is lower than that of conspecifics attached to rock. Total mortality in the population is size (=age)-dependent; the mean life expectancy of a new recruit is 0.54 years compared with 2.57 years for a 1 year-old. The genetic population structure of the precominant zooplankter, the copepod Calanus finmarchicus (Gunnerus), was examined to determine whether genetically distinct populations exist in the Gulf of Maine. C. finmarchicus was sampled in three regions of the Gulf of Maine (Great South Channel, spring 1989; northern Gulf of Maine, winter 1990; Great South Channel and Georges Bank, spring 1990). Copepods from seven locations in the Great South Channel, five in the northern Gulf of Maine and four on or near Georges Bank were assayed for allozyme variation and mitochondrial DNA variation of amplified 16S rRNA and cytochrome b genes. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analyses of both mitochondrial DNA genes revealed no variation among any of the individuals assayed. Analysis of five polymorphic allozyme loci revealed that genetic variation among the three geographic regions was low, and genetic identities were high between all locations (I>0.97). Most of the genetic variation was among locations regardless of region. Chi-square tests were used to examine genetic similarity between specific pairs of locations within and between regions. In the northern Gulf of Maine, genetic homogeneity occurred over larger spatial scales (hundreds of km) than in either the Great South Channel or Georges Bank (tens of km). Only copepods from the Bay of Fundy and Nova Scotian Shelf locations were genetically distinct from Wilkinson Basin copepods at two loci. Copepod populations from the northern locations may have been partially isolated or they may represent immigrant populations (e.g., from the Gulf of St. Lawrence). Several pairs of locations were genetically distinct at one or more loci in the two southern regions. Differences between locations in these regions may represent distinct populations advected into the areas at different times or from different sources (e.g., genetic variation may represent a mixture of genetically distinct northern and southern copepod populations). These results suggest extensive gene flow among populations of C. finmarchicus in the Gulf of Maine with some evidence of genetic population subdivision near the Gulf's northeastern and southern boundaries.  相似文献

Individuals of Mytilus edulis of the same age (ca 2 months) were collected as spat from natural populations. Relative growth rates were determined among individuals differing in heterozygosity at five enzyme loci. Growth rate was positively correlated with individual heterozygosity and each of the five loci contributed about equally to the relatinship. More heterozygous individuals also achieved more uniform average growth rates. Although there was a deficiency of heterozygotes at each locus, relative to Hardy-Weinberg expectations, the magnitude of the deficiency, measured as FIS, was less among faster growing mussels. Our results conform closely with those of Zouros et al. (1980) on the American oyster. We conclude that the relationship between multiple locus heterozygosity and growth rate is one that is general to a diversity of outbreeding plant and animal populations. Other studies indicate that this relationship is due to a greater average metabolic efficiency of more heterozygous individuals. This relationship does not emerge from experimental designs in which there has been limited genetic sampling of the natural genetic variation.  相似文献
