Natural variation in the concentrations of haemocyanin ([Hc]) is examined for three decapod species collected from two different locations (Gullmarsfjord and Kattegat) off the west coast of Sweden (August to September 1998). Only one of the frequency distributions for [Hc] is normally distributed, and median values differ both between and within species. Differences in [Hc] cannot be attributed to sex, reproductive condition or moulting condition (over the limited range of moult stages examined) for any of the species. While body size did not scale with [Hc] for the Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus or the swimming crab Liocarcinus depurator, it did for the spider crab Hyas araneus. To our knowledge this is the first time a negative relationship between body size and [Hc] has been reported for any crustacean. Thus the right-skewed frequency distribution of spider crab [Hc] could be accounted for by the right-skewed body size distribution recorded. The shape of the frequency distributions for [Hc] from the other two species could not be accounted for through differences in the factors examined here, although it is suggested that the amount of food consumed (or not) may be important. Foundresses of the social wasp Polistes biglumis were tested to see whether they were able to recognize alien eggs experimentally introduced into their own nests. Foundresses removed alien conspecific reproductive-destined eggs while they accepted worker-destined eggs. The results indicate that social wasps discriminate among eggs and that they discriminate against alien eggs destined to produce unrelated reproductives. P. biglumis is a strictly solitary founding species, with no reproductive competition within colonies; thus, brood discrimination abilities could have evolved as a counteradaptation against intra- and inter-specific brood parasitism. In several marine bivalve species, biochemical genetic variation at a leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) locus is associated with environmental variability, primarily salinity fluctuation. Population genetic variation at a LAP locus was investigated here in two sympatric mussel species (Mytilus galloprovincialis and Perna canaliculus) from three locations along a salinity gradient in Wellington Harbour, New Zealand. The data for M. galloprovincialis and P. canaliculus do not support the hypothesis that the LAP polymorphism in either species is associated with salinity variation among adult mussels. Due to the absence of small mussels among the samples it is not possible to discount the hypothesis that selection acts primarily against juveniles, as it does for M. edulis in Long Island Sound, USA. Wellington Harbour populations of M. galloprovincialis exhibited large and often highly significant heterozygote excesses at the LAP locus, whereas populations of P. canaliculus from the same locations exhibited large and highly significant heterozygote deficiencies. The reason for this inter-specific difference in population structure is unknown. If it is the result of selection, this suggests that selection acts differentially upon the two species, because demographic attributes and reproductive biology are very similar in the two species. For both M. galloprovincialis and P. canaliculus, significant levels of population genetic heterogeneity were recorded among three locations separated by only 8 to 12 km. Neither species exhibited shell length-dependent genetic variation at the LAP locus, suggesting that for these two species the LAP polymorphism is not associated with variation in shell length. The oxygen-binding properties of haemocyanins (Hc) from three species of gammaridean amphipods, Gammarus locusta (L.) (subtidal), Echinogammarus pirloti (Sexton and Spooner), (intertidal, marine) and E. marinus (Leach) (intertidal, estuarine), one species of hyalid amphipod Hyale nilsonni Rathke (high intertidal, marine) and the talitrid amphipod Orchestia gammarellus (Pallas) (semi-terrestrial) have been studied. All the species were collected from the Firth of Clyde, Scotland, during the spring of 1992. The oxygen-carrying capacity of haemolymph from each species was low, although variable, and was correlated with the low concentration of Hc present. The Hc oxygen-affinity of native gammarid haemolymph was relatively high [partial pressure of oxygen required for half-saturation, P50=4 to 5 torr (0.53 to 0.67 kPa)] at their respective in vivo pH values. At equivalent pH, however, Hc from G. locusta displayed a lower O2-affinity than either Echinogammarus species. Gammarid Hcs had a large Bohr effect ( log P50/ pH=-1.16 to-1.47). Resuspended Hc isolated from whole H. nilsonni showed similar O2-binding properties to those of the gammaridean amphipods [P50=6.3 torr (1.44 kPa) at pH=8.0; log P50/pH=-1.20]. Comparable data for haemolymph from O. gammarellus showed that the Hc had a lower affinity for O2 [P50=14.1 torr (1.87 kPa) at in vivo pH] and exhibited a more moderate Bohr effect ( log P50/ pH=-0.79). To eliminate the possibility that these differences were due to the different haemolymph constituents, each of the Hcs were pelleted and resuspended in physiological saline. The differences noted above persisted, demonstrating that they were due to inherent O2-binding properties of the Hc molecules themselves. An increase in L-lactate resulted in an increase in Hc oxygen-affinity for both Echinogammarus species but not for O. gammarellus. This study has confirmed that there is a clear difference between Hcs from aquatic and semi-terrestrial amphipod genera. The results lend further support to the hypothesis that the move on to land by amphipod crustaceans is accompanied by a decrease in Hc oxygen-affinity, a decrease in the Bohr effect and a decrease in effector (in this case L-lactate) sensitivity.  相似文献

The extent to which exposure to environmental hypoxia (PO2=8, 6, and 4 kPa, approximately 40%, 30%, and 20% saturation, respectively) resulted in an increase in the concentration of the respiratory pigment haemocyanin ([Hc]) in individuals of the Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus depended crucially on the initial [Hc] as well as the intensity of the hypoxia itself. While mean [Hc] did increase with decreasing PO2 (and the variation decreased), for individuals with relatively high initial [Hc] there was no change or even a decrease observed. The greatest hypoxia-related increases in [Hc] were observed in the individuals with the lowest initial [Hc]. Consequently the notion of an 'optimum' [Hc] for a given level of oxygenation was postulated. The changes in [Hc] recorded took place over a considerably shorter time scale (hours rather than days) than has been observed in previous studies. It was not possible to correlate environmental PO2 and median [Hc] in the field. However, it was interesting that the [Hc] frequency distribution curve for lobsters collected from a site that had been markedly hypoxic (PO2=8.0 kPa, approximately 40% saturation) until a few days before sampling was almost exactly the same shape (i.e. leptokurtic) and position (i.e. similar median) to that obtained when lobsters were exposed to PO2=8.0 kPa in the laboratory. Although it would have been desirable to investigate the effect of hypoxia on the frequency distribution of a physiological trait, in this case [Hc], it was not possible due to insufficient sample size, even though the sample sizes employed were considerably larger than those normally used in physiological investigations.  相似文献

The foraging behaviours and dietary compositions of three co-occurring labrids (Ophthalmolepis lineolatus, Notolabrus gymnogenis and Pictilabrus laticlavius), which are conspicuous on rocky reefs in temperate south-eastern Australia, were investigated between 2003 and 2005. SCUBA observations at two locations showed that the feeding intensity, and hence the associated effects of these fishes on rocky reef invertebrate prey, was temporally consistent. Relative differences in the contributions of ingested prey and use of different feeding microhabitats demonstrated that the feeding ecology differed significantly among the three species. Thus, O. lineolatus fed on proportionately higher volumes of polychaetes, polyplacophorans, marginellid gastropods (especially Austroginella sp.), bivalves and echinoids, which were sighted opportunistically in a wide selection of microhabitats, but particularly in sand/rubble. Ambush hunting was used regularly by smaller N. gymnogenis and all sizes of P. laticlavius to forage on amphipods, small decapods and small gastropods at algal bases or fronds and Diopatra dentata tubes. Amphipods were similarly important in the diet of smaller O. lineolatus. Larger N. gymnogenis foraged opportunistically over an increased reef area and made greater use of microhabitats that offered minimal prey refuge (e.g. sand/rubble, bare rock/steel) from which common prey, in particular decapods, were obtained. The significant intra- and inter-specific differences in dietary compositions, allied with differences in the use of feeding microhabitats, would facilitate co-occurrence of these three conspicuous species and contribute to maintaining high richness of labrid species in reef systems. Echinoids were regularly consumed by each species but they made a moderate contribution to the diet of only O. lineolatus, which suggests that only one of the three labrids is likely to play a significant role in regulation of echinoid densities in these rocky reef habitats. However, the broad diets and diverse forging strategies employed by these labrid species imply that they have a system-wide influence on invertebrate prey on rocky reefs.  相似文献

While the benthic infauna of the North Sea has been studied intensively over the past decades, few studies have focused on the larger mobile epifauna. Studies carried out to date have described the distribution of epifaunal communities over the whole of the North Sea, but variability within the identified communities, which occurs on a much smaller scale, has so far remained unstudied. This is the first study to describe seasonal and annual variability of an epifaunal assemblage in the German Bight area, where environmental conditions are highly variable. The benthic community was sampled with a 2 m beam trawl from 1998 to 2001. The echinoderms Ophiura albida and Asterias rubens and the crustacean Pagurus bernhardus were the dominant species caught throughout the study period. Overall the species composition of the catches was relatively consistent, while abundances of dominant species fluctuated considerably between sampling periods. Differences between sampling periods were not only influenced by the abundances of dominant species, but also by less dominant species such as Ophiura ophiura, Astropecten irregularis, Corystes cassivelaunus, Crangon crangon and Aphorrahis pespelicani. The abundances of these species varied annually and seasonally in the assemblage. Clear differences between summer and winter in the species composition, abundance and biomass were identified. Annual and seasonal changes were most likely linked to migratory movements of epifauna into and out of the area under investigation. Temporal changes in species composition and abundance correlated best with water temperatures, while the spatial distribution of the total biomass over the whole sampling period was correlated with sediment characteristics. Anthropogenic influences such as fishing activity and chronic large-scale eutrophication are thought to have influenced the community on a long-term basis, but have been considered unlikely causes for the short-term variability described by this study.Communicated by J.P. Species richness and community composition of symbionts associated with the burrowing echiuran worm, Ochetostoma erythrogrammon Leuckart & Rüppell, 1828, were quantitatively surveyed on subtropical intertidal flats in the Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan. Overall, we recorded seven species of burrow associates, including at least six obligate commensals. According to symbiont community composition, the study sites were largely divided into two groups; one was characterized by the dominance of a snapping shrimp, Alpheus barbatus Coutière, 1897, and the other by the dominance of a scale worm, Lepidonotus sp. Furthermore, a granulometric analysis showed that the sediment characteristics differed significantly between shrimp- and scale worm-dominant sites in terms of median diameter and inclusive graphic standard deviation. These results suggest that these symbionts have different habitat requirements, resulting in the mutually exclusive dominance pattern. Our findings indicate that habitat heterogeneity is important to the evaluation and conservation of the symbiotic diversity in intertidal flats.  相似文献

Environmental hypoxia and the release of reduced manganese (Mn) are often combined stress factors in marine sediments. Previous investigations have shown that hypoxia induces variable responses in the concentration of the respiratory pigment haemocyanin (Hc) of crustaceans. A recent study demonstrated that the magnitude and direction of the changes was dependent on the initial level of Hc in individuals of the Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus. The changes also took place within 24 h rather than days as suggested by previous studies. In this present study we investigated changes of Hc in individual N. norvegicus in uncontaminated sea water after exposure to and release from realistic hypoxic stress (PO 2=6.0 kPa). Furthermore we investigated how concomitant exposure to realistic concentrations of manganese (20 mg l -1) modified the responses we observed. We confirmed a between-individual variation in response and a change in Hc towards an optimum level after hypoxia, but also showed that changes that took place post-hypoxic exposure occurred over a timescale similar to that of the hypoxic response itself. Manganese exposure resulted in no significant changes in Hc whereas Mn exposure combined with hypoxia resulted in a significant decrease (15%) in all individuals independent of initial Hc. N. norvegicus was thus unable to compensate for the effects of hypoxia by synthesis of Hc after exposure to naturally occurring Mn concentrations.  相似文献

The species composition of macrofauna associated with floating seaweed rafts is highly variable and influenced by many factors like spatial and temporal variation, period since detachment and probably also the seaweed species. The presence of seaweed preferences was assessed by a combination of in situ seaweed samplings and multiple-choice aquarium experiments in a controlled environment, using the seaweed-associated grazing organisms Idotea baltica and Gammarus crinicornis. Results from the sampling data confirm that the seaweed composition influences macrofaunal species composition and abundance: samples dominated by Sargassum muticum displayed higher densities but lower diversities compared to samples dominated by Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus vesiculosus. Seaweed preference was also apparent from the multiple-choice experiments, but did not exactly match the results of the community analysis: (1) I. baltica had high densities in seaweed samples (SWS) dominated by F. vesiculosus and A. nodosum, while in the experiments, this isopod was most frequently associated with Enteromorpha sp. and F. vesiculosus, and fed mostly on S. muticum, A. nodosum and Enteromorpha sp.; (2) G. crinicornis had high densities in SWS dominated by F. vesiculosus, while in the experiments, this amphipod was most frequently associated with S. muticum, but fed most on A. nodosum and F. vesiculosus. It is clear from the laboratory experiments that preference for habitat (shelter) and food can differ among seaweed species. However, food and habitat preferences are hard to assess because grazer preference may change if choices are increased or decreased, if different sizes of grazers are used, or if predators or other grazers are added to the experiments. The effects of seaweed composition may also be blurred due to the obligate opportunistic nature of a lot of the associated macrofaunal species.  相似文献

Geostatistics was used to analyze the spatial structure and distribution of three species of brachyurans, Liocarcinus depurator, Macropipus tuberculatus and Polybius henslowii, from sets of data collected during three survey cruises (1983 and 1984) over the Galician continental shelf. The present study investigates the feasibility of using geostatistics with data collected according to traditional methods and of thereby improving the sampling methodology. In order to investigate the spatial structure of the species studied, experimental variograms were calculated and fitted to a spherical model. The spatial structure model was used to estimate and map abundance and distribution of the populations studied using the so-called Kriging technique. Geostatistical analysis enabled the determination of spatial density gradients as well as patch size (14 to 22 km, L. depurator; 10 to 28 km, M. tuberculatus; 7.5 to 28 km, P. henslowii) along the continental shelf. Depth was revealed as a limiting factor, restricting the distribution of L. depurator and M. tuberculatus on a large scale, whereas upwelling processes and nutrient-rich waters from the rías affected the spatial structure on a smaller scale, especially in the case of P. henslowii. A spatial segregation in the distribution of the three species also emerged; this probably arose from differences in physical and biological factors that result in different habitat-exploitation patterns. The study demonstrates the existence of spatial covariance and that the variograms vary as a function of population density and geographical area. This information will be useful in improving the design of future sampling cruises.  相似文献

The composition of lipids and fatty acids was determined for the livers, muscle, pancreas, kidney and stomach fluids of deepwater chondrichthyan species (including 11 squaliformes, 3 chimaeriformes, 1 hexanchiforme and 3 carcharhiniformes) caught as bycatch from continental waters off south-eastern Australia. The lipid class, fatty acid and fatty alcohol composition differed markedly in each tissue and in each species. The lipid and fatty acid composition of large, lipid-rich (38–70% wet weight, ww) livers demonstrated the multifunctional role of this organ in: lipid distribution, storage and biosynthesis, and buoyancy regulation. In the liver, the importance of certain lipids (including squalene, diacylglyceryl ethers, triacylglycerols and to a lesser extent wax esters) as mediators of buoyancy varied according to lifestyle and habitat. Less variability was observed in the muscle profiles, characterized by low lipid content (<1.0% ww) and high relative levels of polar lipids (>70%). The lipid and fatty acid profiles of the kidney and pancreas showed the highest intraspecific variability, suggesting these organs also have complex roles in lipid storage and metabolism. Overall intra- and interspecific differences in the tissue fatty acid profiles could be related to differences in a number of factors including phylogeny, habitat (depth), buoyancy regulation and diet and presumably also reflect different ecological roles. The lipid and fatty acid profiles are the first published for Rhinochimaera pacifica, Chimaera lignaria and Figaro boardmani and the first to demonstrate interspecific variation in lipid profiles of various tissues of deepwater chondrichthyans. The application of multivariate analysis to lipid class and fatty acid tissue profiles in chondrichthyans inferred dietary differences and metabolic preferences between species and habitats. These results have important implications for the future use of fatty acids as dietary tracers in chondrichthyan research.  相似文献

Summary. Lucidota atra, a diurnal firefly, shares possession of defensive steroids (lucibufagins or LBGs) with nocturnal fireflies of the genus Photinus. Photinus are protected against predators by their LBGs, but not against fireflies of the genus Photuris, the so-called firefly femmes fatales, which prey upon Photinus, thereby acquiring LBGs for their own defense. We propose that L. atra may have been prompted evolutionarily to become diurnal by the opportunity to avoid, thereby, being hunted by Photuris. Indeed, L. atra, if offered to Photuris, were eagerly devoured by the latter, which sequestered their LBG’s. In feeding on L. atra, Photuris may be driven by a gustatory affinity for LBGs. Persistent nocturnality might therefore have put L. atra at risk vis à vis Photuris. Diurnality freed the firefly from that risk, without compromising its defended status with respect to other predators. Possession of LBGs may in fact account for L. atra’s unacceptability to birds and spiders.  相似文献

Samples of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) collected in 1991 and 1992 from the western, central and eastern regions of the Pacific Ocean were examined for genetic variability. Four polymorphic allozyme loci (ADA *, FH *, GPI-S * and GPI-F *) were examined in all samples and a fifth polymorphism (GDA *) was examined in western and central samples only. Samples were also screened for mitochondrial DNA variation following restriction analysis by two enzymes (BcII and EcoRI) detecting polymorphic cut sites. Eighteen mtDNA haplotypes were revealed, with an overall nucleon diversity of 0.678. A subset of individuals screened for eight restriction enzymes had an overall nucleon diversity of 0.724 and a mean nucleotide diversity per sample of 0.359%. No significant spatial heterogeneity was detected for alleles at the ADA *, FH *, GPI-S * and GDA * loci nor for the mtDNA haplotypes. Significant heterogeneity was detected for GPI-F *. At this locus, the two eastern samples (southern California and northern Mexico) were not significantly different from each other but were significantly different (P<0.001) from the five western/central samples (Philippines, Coral Sea, Kiribati, Hawaii-91 and Hawaii-92). GPI-F * 100 was the most common allele in western and central regions, GPI-F * 75 the most common in eastern samples.  相似文献

Sperm traits often show extreme variation both between and within species. Between-species variation may often be interpreted in the context of a sperm competition theory, but within-species variation has remained unexplained. Previous studies on intraspecific variation in sperm traits have focused on a limited set of variables and may have failed to explain observed variation because of potential trade-offs between different sperm traits. We report on variation in number, size, motility and longevity of sperm in the frog Crinia georgiana, a species where sperm competition is common. We found intrapopulation variation in sperm size and motility and interpopulation variation in relative sperm number and size. When we combined relative sperm number and size into one variable, and motility and longevity into another, we found significant interpopulation variation in these variables as well. We also detected considerable intra- and significant interpopulation variation in cumulative sperm quality, a combination of all four sperm traits. Furthermore, a significant effect of the interaction between population origin and male size on sperm characteristics indicated interpopulation variation in the strength of selection acting on sperm traits of males adopting different mating strategies. We discuss heterogeneity in the reproductive environment, a complex genetic background in the determination of sperm characteristics and varying levels of developmental noise as potential contributors to the observed variation in sperm traits.  相似文献

A total of 4,172 freshwater eels have been collected by electrofishing in upper estuaries from Madagascar (East coast), Mascarene (Réunion and Mauritius Is.), Comoros (Mayotte Is.) and Seychelles (Mahé and Praslin Is.) Archipelagos, between October 2003 and February 2006. Eel species composition in the sampling stations was contrasted between eastern Madagascar (Anguilla mossambica 96.0%, A. marmorata 3.9% and A. bicolor bicolor 0.2%), the Comoros (A. marmorata 56.1% and A. bicolor bicolor 43.9%), the Mascarene (A. marmorata 91.4%, A. bicolor bicolor 5.4% and A. mossambica 3.2%) and the Seychelles Archipelagos (A. bicolor bicolor 100.0%). This gradient in species composition, even concerning the short time-range of our sampling, argued for separate migration routes between species. A total of 168 eels were aged by reading their otolith microstructure, and otolith growth rates were calculated from pre-leptocephalus stage (post-hatching) to metamorphosis, until freshwater check. For all species, mean otolith growth rate (OGR) was related to specific migration routes: A. bicolor bicolor is distributed in the lowest latitudes and showed the highest OGR during leptocephalus stage, whereas A. mossambica, endemic of the Malagasy area, has the most southern distribution and showed the lowest OGR. OGR during leptocephalus stage was negatively correlated to the leptocephalus stage duration, showing a decrease of global metabolism with time, classical in leptocephali. This relationship was found significant for A. marmorata and A. mossambica, probably because all these larvae crossed successively the same environments, but not for A. bicolor bicolor, probably because their larvae crossed different pelagic environments, opening the hypothesis of larvae from different origins.  相似文献

Foragers show adaptive responses to changes within their environment, and such behavioural plasticity can be a significant driving force in speciation. We investigated how lactating Antarctic fur seals, Arctocephalus gazella, adapt their foraging within two contrasting ecosystems. Location and diving data were collected concurrently, between December 2003 and February 2004, from 43 seals at Bird Island, where krill, Euphausia superba, are the main prey, and 39 at Heard Island, where mostly fish are consumed. Seals at Heard Island were shorter and lighter than those at Bird Island and they spent longer at sea, dived more frequently and spent more time in the bottom phase of dives. Generalized additive mixed effects models showed that diving behaviours differed between the islands. Both populations exploited diel vertically migrating prey species but, on average, Heard Island seals dived deeper and exceeded their estimated aerobic dive limits. We propose that the recovery of the Heard Island population may be limited by the relative inaccessibility and scarcity of food, whereas at Bird Island, the presence of abundant krill resources helps sustain extremely high numbers of seals, even with increased intra- and inter-specific competition. Both populations of fur seals appear to be constrained by their physiological limits, in terms of their optimal diving behaviour. However, there does appear to be some flexibility in strategy at the level of trip with animals adjusting their time at sea and foraging effort, in order to maximize the rate of delivery of energy to their pups.  相似文献

Adaptive cluster sampling (ACS) is an adaptive sampling scheme which operates under the rule that when the observed value of an initially selected sampling unit satisfies some condition of interest, C, other additional units in some pre-defined accompanying neighborhood are also added to the sample. In turn, if any of these additional units satisfy C, then their corresponding unit neighborhoods are added to the sample as well, and so on. This process stops when no additional units satisfying C are encountered. This paper will provide a review of the major developments and issues in ACS since its introduction by Thompson (1990) [Journal of the American Statistical Association, 85, 1050–1059].  相似文献

The doubly uniparental system of mitochondrial inheritance (DUI) is best known in marine mussels Mytilus. Under DUI there are two types of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). The female type (F) is transmitted to offspring of both genders and the male type (M) exclusively to sons; consequently two distinct mtDNA lineages exist. The M lineage evolves under more relaxed selection than the F lineage resulting in higher polymorphism within the M lineage. Though this polymorphism is expected to make inferences on fine population structure easier using M instead of F data, no comprehensive comparative data exist to support this claim. We sequenced a 1,205 bp fragment of M and F mtDNA comprising parts of the COIII and ND2 genes, and analysed 204 individuals representing three Mytilus species: M. edulis, M. galloprovincialis and M. trossulus from 13 European sampling sites. A clear distinction between Mediterranean and Atlantic populations was found with both M and F data, but much better geographic differentiation was found within the Atlantic using F rather than M data. In particular, Atlantic M. galloprovincialis can be differentiated from Atlantic M. edulis, and further subdivision of Atlantic M. edulis is possible using the F data but not the M data. Multiple tests of selection were carried out to attempt to explain this paradox. We concluded that the overall pattern of polymorphism is consistent with strong purifying selection; not only is this selection relaxed in the M lineage in comparison with the F lineage, but it is also more frequently interrupted by periodic selective sweeps within the M lineage.  相似文献
